Museums at Lisle Station Park mark 40th anniversary 5-part exhibit showcases the work of Lisle Park District, Lisle Heritage Society, and the Village of Lisle in preserving Lisle’s heritage

Tucked just off Ogden Avenue and Main Street, The Museums at Lisle Station Park is the steward of Lisle’s long history and heritage.

A cooperative effort of the Lisle Park District, Lisle Heritage Society, and the Village of Lisle, the Museum campus was created in 1978 to provide a home for the community’s historic train depot.

This cooperative has launched one of its most ambitious projects to date.

The five-part exhibit, “Views from Lisle” commemorates the 40th anniversary of The Museums at Lisle Station Park.

“We, Museum Curator Concetta Gibson and I were trying to figure out a good way to celebrate the 40th year,” said Ethan Peterman, museum visitor experience coordinator/educator. “We wanted to answer the question ‘What have been doing for the past 40 years?’”

The answer is an all-encompassing look at the history of Lisle and the work being done to preserve it.

The five-part exhibit runs through September 15 in phases.

From February 3 to May 5, “How Did We Get Here?” showed the growth of The Museums at Lisle Station Park grew from one building to a full campus of five building. The origins and acqui-

sitions of the campus buildings were explained.

“Lisle’s Railroad History,” running through June 16, showcases the integral role played by the railroad in Lisle. Settled in 1832, the life of this agricultural community soon revolved around the railroad depot and the area became known as Lisle Station. Explore the progression from the Chicago-Aurora Line to the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Line of today, and how this important piece of infrastructure shaped the Village of Lisle.

From June 16 to July 4. “Trades And Business In Lisle” explores the development of trades, craftwork, and business in Lisle.

From July 4 to Sept. 15. “Restoring History” look at the processes used by the Lisle Heritage Society, The Museums at Lisle Station Park staff, and other museum professionals to restore the objects, art, and buildings in our collection to their current condition.

From Sept. 15 to Nov. 17, “Views From Lisle” spotlights the research and preservation that has been done in the community over the past 40 years.

“It’s basically a culmination of how it all fits together,” said Peterman.

This final exhibit also ties in with the annual Depot Days, Sept.

16-17, a trip back in time to the 19th century with events and activities that bring to life the early days of Lisle.

“The exhibit(s) is mostly made

up of the museum’s collection but also from the Lisle Heritage Society and the park district as well as donations from the area,” said Peterman. “We would like to show people what we, the Park District, Village of Lisle and the Lisle Heritage Society, have been doing the last 40 years,” he said.

Police asking residents to be ‘vigilant at all times’ ‘If you see something, say something;’ report suspicious activity using variety of numbers The Westmont Police Department is encouraging citizens to report immediately report suspicious behavior.

“We want people to keep this simple phrase in mind,” says Westmont Chief of Police Jim Gunther. “ ‘If you see something,

say something.’ This mantra has been adopted by the Office of Homeland Security and the goal is to encourage everyone to be vigilant at all times when it comes to safety and reporting suspicious behavior. If everyone is working together to keep our community

safe, then we can help reduce crime overall.”

Too often, citizens will be hesitant to report a potential criminal situation, and that lack of action actually enhances the criminal’s success. Gunther says, “If something seems out of the ordinary, then call 9-1-1 so that Police can respond and determine the specifics of a situation. The Police Department relies on our citizens to help with being the eyes and ears

of the community.”

Situations deserving a 9-1-1 call include a stranger coming to your house to promote or sell something without a solicitor’s permit, unfamiliar persons or vehicles surveying your neighborhood, graffiti, open and unattended garage doors, and more.

er, such as: location of the incident (address), is an ambulance needed, has a gun been fired or has there been a use of a weapon, complete description of person being reported including gender, approximate age, approximate height, approximate weight, facial features, description of clothing, etc. If a car is involved, the make, model, license plate, and last known direction of travel is helpful.

The USA Luge Slider Search is a program that introduces the sport of luge to boys and girls ages 9-13 all across the USA. The clinics utilize actual luge sleds equipped with wheels for summer use and participants are taught the basics of how to ride and steer a luge sled by a US National Luge Team athletes and coaches. Last fall’s regional Slider Search event brought more than 100 Olympic hopefuls from throughout the Midwest to Westmont.

Bond set for man accused of hammer attack DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Glendale Heights Chief of Police Doug Flint announced today that bond has been set for a man accused of attacking another man with a hammer, striking him at least twice in the head. Javier Garcia, 20 (d.o.b. 12/13/1997) of 314 Wilson, West Chicago, appeared at a

bond hearing this morning where Judge George Bakalis set bond at $750,000 with 10% to apply. Garcia has been charged with two counts of Aggravated Battery With a Deadly Weapon, a Class 3 Felony.

It is alleged that on May 22, 2018, at approximately 2:07 p.m., Garcia and three other individuals went to a home on Windsor Drive in Glendale Heights armed with a large hammer. It is alleged that once Garcia arrived at the home, where a friend of the victim lived,

It is further alleged that when Garcia was approximately five to ten feet away from the men, he threw the hammer at the victim, striking him in the head and rendering him unconscious.

It is alleged that Garcia then retrieved the hammer, and again struck the victim multiple times with the hammer, at least once more in the head and once in the chest.

O’Hare Airport: Place to reunite with ones you love

BY MARNI PYKE OF THE DAILY HERALD It took just seven years for O’Hare International Airport to rise from an unassuming, former aircraft factory to the world’s busiest airport in 1962.

Since then, the Midwest aviation hub has witnessed history and sparked an economic boom in the region; but for many across Illinois, it’s the place to reunite with the ones you love best.

“Creating O’Hare was a marvelously foresighted decision by the city of Chicago,” aviation expert Joseph Schwieterman said.

Chicago leaders chose Orchard Field, where the Douglas Aircraft Co. was building fighter planes, as the site for a second airport to relieve busy Midway International Airport in 1945.

The facility got its name in 1949 from heroic World War II pilot Edward “Butch” O’Hare and opened for commercial traffic in 1955. The main terminal building and a parking lot were completed in 1961 and in 1963 President John F. Kennedy dedicated the airport.

“There is no other airport in the world which serves so many people and so many planes,” Kennedy said.

O’Hare can be credited with generating a commercial boom in northwest Chicago and the surrounding suburbs that includes industrial parks, hotels and restaurants, freight operations and transportation services.

An estimated 450,000 jobs in the region are linked to O’Hare and its economic impact is $38 billion, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation.

An extension of Route 390/Elgin-O’Hare Expressway to the airport and a ring road (I-490) on its western edge are projected to create up to 65,000 new direct and indirect jobs in the region.

O’Hare ranks as the country’s second busiest airport, with 867,635 arrivals and departures in 2016, compared to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport with 898,356.

But along with being a financial and transportation asset, O’Hare has an emotional connection with Illinoisans.

Over the years, the airport has witnessed heartbreak as when American Airlines Flight 191 crashed minutes after takeoff near Des Plaines in 1979.

It’s seen emotional farewells as soldiers deployed to Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq, and joyful reunions as they returned.

And in January 2017, it saw protests over a travel ban enacted by the White

House on seven predominantly Muslim nations.

Famous fliers have taxied on the tarmac from President Barack Obama aboard Air Force One to sports teams raising trophies such as the 1985 Chicago Bears, 2005 White Sox, 2013 Blackhawks and 2016 Chicago Cubs.

Back in 1963, Kennedy hoped the government and airlines, “will continue to work as hard as they can to make sure that the noise from these jets which take us in and out do not disturb the lives of ... people whose homes are in the immediate area.”

His words were prescient as noise is the crux of the love-hate relationship neighborhoods around O’Hare have had with the behemoth. Neighbors appreciate the fact that the airport creates jobs, but loathe the din of jets over their homes. Since 1995, more than 10,900 homes have been soundproofed but concerns about noise continue to date.

The airport was a trendsetter over the years with the iconic steel and glass of Terminal 1 designed by Helmut Jahn and the transcendent “Sky’s the Limit” light sculpture between Concourses B and C. Other unique features include a soothing hydroponic garden, a replica of a World War II fighter plane and a yoga room.

“When O’Hare opened it was rivaled only by JFK (International Airport in New York) as an aviation showpiece that pointed the way to the future,” said Schwieterman, a DePaul University professor, “(with) the double-deck roadway, multiple-terminal design, the room for expansion in the footprint.”

In its most recent metamorphosis,

O’Hare is shifting to a parallel runway system instead of relying on diagonals.

The sixth and final parallel is scheduled to be completed in fall 2020.

As its next act, the city of Chicago is pursuing an O’Hare 21 plan. Elements include “a new global terminal, more gate frontage, more space for passenger amenities and other improvements to increase efficiency of growing airport operations,” CDA Communications Deputy Commissioner Lauren Huffman said.

“Aging terminals will be redeveloped and a new global terminal will double O’Hare’s capacity for serving international passengers, allowing arriving international passengers to exit faster and connect to other flights with greater ease.”

The plan also includes three new or redeveloped hotels and additional gates.

“Getting around the airport will be faster, more convenient and efficient.

Customer service will be improved with new technology, amenities and more space to relax,” Huffman said. “Over the next decade, these investments will ensure that O’Hare is equipped for growth and to maintain its status as a top destination and choice hub for passengers around the world.”

Downers Grove North senior defender Francesca Marconi looks back on the moment and laughs at how naïve she and her teammates were when IHSSCA Hall of Famer Brian Papa became head coach last season.

“Papa will always say how when he first came on last year he was talking about taking us to state,” Marconi recalled. “I was like, ‘You’re funny, but we don’t win anything.’

“That was the mindset we all had; if we can win regionals, then awesome. Then we kept winning.”

Indeed, the Trojans, whose only previous regional championship came in 2008, not only won the regional but the sectional and supersectional as well. They stunned top-ranked Naperville North 1-0 on penalty kicks in the supersectional

to advance to the Class 3A state semifinals before settling for fourth place, winning the first soccer trophy in school history.

Downers North has continued the winning tradition this spring. Thanks to a stellar back line led by Marconi and Olivia Bull, the host Trojans captured another regional championship Friday when they knocked off rival Hinsdale Central 4-0 at Doerhoefer Park.

The final home game for nine Downers North senior starters began and ended with a bang. Sophomore Alexis Parker scored twice in the first 15 minutes and freshman Abby Anderson capped the scoring with a goal in the 75th minute. Senior Carissa Mysliwiec also scored for the second-seeded Trojans (12-6-4), who advanced to play third-seeded Glenbard East in Tuesday’s York Sectional semifinals.

North Central’s Wisz, Mateja honored — again For the second time this week, Mike Wisz and Michael

Mateja have been named to the 2018 American Baseball

Coaches Association (ABCA)/ Rawlings NCAA Division III

All-America Team, earning first and second team honors, re-

spectively.

After receiving second team All-America honors by D3baseball.com earlier this week, the ABCA named Wisz a first team selection after the sophomore outfielder led all of NCAA Division III with 73 runs batted in this season.

His 73 RBI fell just one shy of tying the program’s singleseason record, while his 73 hits on the season led the team and are tied for third on the singleseason list.

Wisz also led the team with nine homeruns, 21 doubles and a .709 slugging percentage, while batting at a .408 clip.

Mateja adds yet another AllAmerica award to his mantel, earning second team recognition, joining Ken Ritter ‘88 and Nick Sotiros ‘17 as the only players in program history to receive multiple All-America honors. Mateja led the team batting .444 this season, good for eighth on the single-season batting list, while also leading the team with 54 runs scored, 27 walks, four triples and a .534 on-base percentage.

Additionally, Mateja finished second on the team with 72 hits, 20 doubles, 112 total bases and a .691 slugging percentage.

This marks the fourth time in program history that the Cardinals have received multiple All-American awards, also achieving the feat in 1987, 1992 and 2017, while bringing the program total to 22 selections all-time.

Earlier this season, Mateja and Wisz were named College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW ) Co-Players of the Year, while each were named first team All-Central Region by the ABCA and D3baseball.com.

Additionally, Mateja was honored as the Central Region Player of the Year by D3baseball.com for the second-straight season.

North Central qualified for its third-straight NCAA Division III Regional in 2018 after winning back-to-back CCIW Tournament titles and fourconsecutive CCIW regular season championships, en route to a 29-14 overall record.

“It was really nice winning a regional over (Downers) South (last year) and then over Central,” Nehls said. “Those are our two biggest rivals, so it’s a good feeling.”

The Trojans felt good about how they started against the seventh-seeded Red Devils (811-2), who played them tough in a 1-0 Downers North win in the regular season.

“I saw the goalie coming and I knew I had a girl on my back,” Parker said. “I didn’t want to be fouled in the box, I just wanted to get it through.

“I saw the goalie coming out so I knew I had to place it to the corner and I just hit it to the left corner.”

Parker came in with the mindset of making a difference.

The Trojans have struggled to score goals this season and this figured to be a low-scoring game between two teams with strong defenses.

“Since this was such a big game, I knew I had to perform,” Parker said. “I wanted to beat them by as many points as we could and so I just got out there and scored as many as I could to contribute.

“As a team I think we played great. Everyone was working together, we were all talking to each other, making sure everybody was up. We played all 80 minutes today.”

That, according to Marconi, was a first.

“For me and I think for a lot of the seniors, we were talking about before the game saying how this could be our last game, so just play with all your heart and don’t walk off the field thinking you could have done something more,” Marconi said.

“That’s the first time all season we’ve played a full 80 minutes.

“I think it was clear we just played with so much heart, passion and intensity for the whole 80 minutes and I think that showed in the result.”

• Fifth-seeded Downers Grove South also advanced to the York Sectional semifinals, avenging a 2-0 regular season loss and edging fourth-seeded Morton 3-2 to win the Downers South Regional on Friday.

Brynn Davis, Nicole Fajardo and Allison Eberhard scored goals, while Jill Paladino added two assists and Talia Davis one for the Mustangs (12-5-4), who take a six-game unbeaten streak into Tuesday’s match with top-seeded Lyons.

CLASS 2A Benet tied the school record for wins by routing Hancock 6-0 in the Hancock Regional final Saturday at Gately Stadium in Chicago.

Mia Tommasone, Erin Flynn, Kate Flynn, Clare Bumpus, Abby Casmere and Kayla Brannigan tallied goals while goalies Eva Frantzen and Lauren Lukitsh shared the shutout for the topseeded Redwings (18-3-1), who face fourth-seeded Nazareth in Tuesday’s Hinsdale South Sectional semifinals.

BASEBALL Downers Grove North defeated Wheaton Warrenville South 6-5 on May 22 before falling 16-0 to Neuqua Valley the following day.

Regional championship games were held Saturday, May 26 - after The Bugle early Memorial Day deadline.

Downers South faced Plainfield North at Plainfield North, while Benet faced Plainfield East at Hinsdale Central.

Mortgage debt OK as long as it’s 15-year-fixed DEAR DAVE, I’m 28, single, and I just became debt-free. In addition, I make $70,000 a year and have the equivalent of six months of expenses set aside for emergencies. Should I save up to pay cash for a house, or is mortgage debt okay? I’d like to keep the price of a new home between $200,000 and $225,000. Since I currently live in a nice apartment, I think I can save about $20,000 a year. What do you think?

KATHRYN DEAR KATHRYN, It sounds like you’re in great financial shape. Congratulations on becoming debt-free! Let’s take a look at both scenarios. If you can save $20,000 a year, that means you’re about 10 years away from a nice, paid-for home, and you’re still debt-free. That’s one option. At the same time, I don’t yell at people for taking out a 15-year, fixed-rate mortgage, where the payments are no more than 25 percent of their monthly take home pay. In this situation, you could save like crazy for a couple of years and make a big down payment on a home in the price range you’re talking about.

Then, you could pay off that house in just 15 years.

I honestly don’t have a problem with either solution, Kathryn, but think about this. Wouldn’t it be great to have your own home, and still be completely debt-free, at 40?

It’s something to think about!
