The Library’s past and present came together when four library directors, Pam Dubé, Susan McNeil Marshall, Mary Sue Brown and Laurie Kagann, shared the stage along with the first Children’s Librarian, Carol Ifflen Todd, and current Children’s Librarian—and longest serving staff member with 40 years—Kelly Girard.

Democratic State Senator Pat McGuire and Republican Representative David Olsen jointly presented the library with an Illinois State recognition of its 50 years of service, each expressing support for public libraries as well as their personal pride in being avid readers.

Senator McGuire showed off the two most important cards that he carries–his voter card and his library card—while Representative Olsen highlighted the importance of a public library to its community.

Earth Day was observed with library trustees stepping outside to dedicate a “50 year” anniversary tree. The tree is expected to be growing strong when the library celebrates its 100th birthday in 2067.

A time capsule ceremony

engaged the crowd as objects meaningful to the last 50 years of library history were preserved for a future generation.

Objects included an old library-edition of the book Harry Potter, a catalog card, and a humorous letter to the Woodridge Library of 2067 which ponders the possibility of library books being returned by drones.

Once the formal ceremonies were over and “Happy Birthday” had been sung, partygoers of all ages enjoyed nearly 450 servings of cake, cake-pops and cupcakes.

The bash continued with singer Chris Colletti taking the crowd back to 1967, performing songs from the likes of Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. Magician Christopher George wrapped up the day, mesmerizing the standing room only audience when he made one young partygoer float on a magic carpet.

Celebrations of the Woodridge Library’s 50th Year continue with a big Trivia Night program on May 18 and upcoming summer programs that will recall the 1967 “Summer of Love.”

Library Board seeking applications for seat Candidate will serve until the next regular election in April 2019 Due to a recent vacancy, the Westmont Public Library Board of Trustees is seeking applications from interested Westmont residents to serve on the Library Board.

The selected candidate will

serve until the next regular election in April 2019.

The Library Board is a sevenmember body responsible for determining policy, providing fiscal and facility oversight, and developing long range plans in order to provide library service to the Village of Westmont residents.

Residents who would like to be considered for the appointment should complete an application

by May 9.

Applications are available at the library or on the website at westmontlibrary.org.

Student to represent Illinois at national conference DGS junior to attend 2017 Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference in June 2017 North High junior Natalie White has been selected to represent the state of Illinois at the 2017 Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference in June 2017. The conference will be held in Washington, D.C. at the Newseum, which is dedicated to free expression and the First Amendment. In addition to an all-expenses paid trip to D.C., White also will receive a $1,000 college scholarship.

“This is the first time in our school’s history that a student has been selected for this prestigious conference,” says North High Teacher Elizabeth Levin.

“Natalie is an exceptional student journalist who will not only represent North High well, but also the entire state of Illinois.”

During the conference White will attend sessions with media professionals, news executives and prominent “free spirits.”

College opportunities key for special needs students

BY DANIEL SMROKOWSKI My friend Chloe Young, 18, of Warrenville, stands in the middle of an ice rink at Seven Bridges Ice Arena in Woodridge as her figure skating lesson takes place this past week. She sports a brown headband with sparkles, a blue skirt, ice skates, and a light blue fleece jacket with the words “U.S. Figure Skating” embroidered on the upper left of the jacket.

Chloe was diagnosed with Williams syndrome at three weeks of age; doctors said that she was not going to make it.

Williams syndrome is a deletion of the first copy of the gene #7. Chloe defied her doctors’ expectations by rising to become a figure skating champion, soonto-be high school graduate firmly on the road to a higher education. To her proud parents, Jennifer and Marcus Farmer, Chloe is their “little miracle and star,” her mom proclaimed.

This is the time to celebrate the accomplishments of those with Williams syndrome and other intellectual disabilities.

It is time to educate our communities about how to accept and include those of us with special needs in college and in career planning.

Families of students with special needs have a passion for their child to be included and accepted by their peers without disabilities. Often times, those of us with special needs are excluded from certain activities within the community or in a regular education classroom.

“Our passion for inclusion was that Chloe wasn’t always included, so that’s where it started for us,” said Jennifer.

Chloe’s parents had always given her all the extracurricular opportunities that any other child could receive such as competing in figure skating or cheerleading.

One afternoon in the eighth grade, Chloe came home and sat her parents down for “the talk.”

“I want to go to college,” said Chloe.

And, that dream then became her mother Jennifer’s new research project.

Jennifer searched for the various programs that offered support for students with special needs in college. Thankfully there were many programs that are now available. Jennifer had to research the cost, where they were located, and what Chloe would need to accomplish in high school. Many students with disabilities have an Individual Education Plan (I.E.P.) that helps special education teachers, school, and parents to know how to best help the student in school and for the future. There are many special education

By Daniel Smrokowski teachers that care and want the best for their students but they may not always know what the student wants for their future.

“I don’t think that in an I.E.P. situation it’s always what the school wants,” said Jennifer. “I think it’s what the student wants and that’s what should drive everything.”

Similar to Chloe, my special education teachers did not necessarily believe that college was the right choice for me.

When I was in high school, my parents and I spent lots of time in I.E.P. meetings encouraging my case managers to include me on the education track for college. In 2012, I earned my degree in journalism from Roosevelt University.

Even now that 10 years have passed since I was a high school senior, as Chloe is today, there might still be special education teachers unconvinced to put our college dreams first.

Today, more and more special education teachers take into account what the student wants. In doing so, this gives those of us with disabilities equal opportunity to achieve a higher education.

During Chloe’s college visits, there was one university that she very quickly chose as her No. 1 school of choice— Vanderbilt University. Located in Nashville, Tennessee, Vanderbilt is rated as #15 in the nation and, according to Chloe’s mom, Jennifer, has a history of inclusion within the “Next Steps” program that Chloe will be a part of. “Next Steps” is a program for students with intellectual disabilities providing them with an individual program of study in the areas of academics, social skills, and vocational training.

“I wanted [Chloe to] go somewhere they’ve done inclusion and they’ve done it well,” said Jennifer. “What Vanderbilt offers people with Williams [syndrome] is amazing.”

Chloe and her parents looked at other university campuses, including South Carolina and the University of Tennessee but the high quality level of inclusion that Vanderbilt brings to their students with intellectual differences was the perfect

match for Chloe. During a “trial day” at Vanderbilt, Chloe had an opportunity to sit in on classes to see what a typical college day was like. It was then that Chloe and her parents saw an amazing poster in front of the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center. It was a poster showcasing a little boy with a cowboy hat who had Williams syndrome. Jennifer explained how the university does a tremendous amount of research and even offers a music camp.

Come fall 2017, Chloe will be a pioneer as Vanderbilt’s newest freshman. She will be the first person with Williams syndrome to be a student at Vanderbilt and actually be living on campus. Chloe loves studying science and hopes to have a career in this field. Jennifer says Chloe’s love for studying science has made college a default option for furthering her education.

“Training in college will lend itself to a career as opposed to a job,” said Jennifer.

One of the reasons why Chloe chose Vanderbilt was she wanted a school that had a study abroad program and also football so that she could hangout with friends and “tailgate,” as Chloe excitedly told me. According to the Williams Syndrome Association, people with Williams syndrome are extremely social and friendly. Chloe will have no problem making friends when she begins her collegiate studies.

Many of us with special needs, like Chloe and myself, want to be included in college. The number of universities today that have disability programs is on the rise. Today, many higher-level institutions are able to bring inclusion into their college classrooms. We want to have the same pathway to have a career as our peers without disabilities.

Many students with special needs want “to be included in classes instead of rejected from classes,” said Chloe.

Redwings surpass last year’s win total

On April 27, Benet Academy’s senior centerfielder Marty Dosen, deposited a Nazareth pitcher’s fastball, onto the backyard of the Lisle residence, beyond the left field fence.

Dosen’s walk-off grand slam, gave the Redwings a 14-10, 11 inning East Suburban Catholic Conference victory. With the win, the Redwings pulled into a threeway tie atop the ESCC with Marian Catholic and Joliet Catholic.

The win was the Redwings 12th in their last 13 games.

The 2016 Redwings won only 13 games but returned a number of quality performers from that team. The 2017 Redwings were confident of having a successful season.

“It took awhile for us to get things going,” Benet Academy head baseball coach Scott Lawler said. “Everything was new to start the season. We quickly turned it around.”

Indeed. After starting the season 2-0 and then losing three consecutive games, the ‘Wings caught fire. 11 consecutive victories later the Redwings were atop the ESCC. The streak ended, in the second game of an ESCC doubleheader, in a 4-1 loss to St. Patrick,on April 22. The loss temporarily knocked the ‘Wings out of first-place and then Dosen’s blast returned Benet to the top.

Dosen along with fellow seniors CJ Birck and Mike Dunn, are the ‘Murders Row” at the heart of the Redwing lineup. No. 3 hitter Birck, Dosen at cleanup and Dunn in the 5 hole, strike terror in the hearts of opposing pitchers. Along with second baseman Tyler Bautista, who entered the Nazareth game hitting over .400, are the leaders of a Redwing offense, that average almost 7 runs per game.

“We really have been scoring a lot of runs this season,” Dunn said.

I am sitting in a real nice spot, in the 5 hole with men on base and scoring chances, every game. I am very happy with all three facets of my game but continue to work hard to continue to get better.”

“We didn’t quite have the season in 2016 as we wanted,” Dosen said. “This year,we have won more games now, than we had all last year. It’s been a great ride and I love playing with these guys . Winning is contagious and we don’t want it to stop.”

“Back in our preseason meetings, our number one goal was to win the ESCC,” Bautista said. “We are looking forward to hosting the Class 3A regionals and sectionals.

There is nothing like playing at home.”

Right-handed pitchers Birck (1-0) and Dunn (1-1), join righthanders Steve Arrowsmith (2-0), Mark Moran (3-2) and junior Tony Adams (3-0), to make up the Redwing pitching rotation. Adams picked up the win on Dosen’s walk-off slam, on April 26.

“We’ve had a great start to the season,” senior right-handed pitcher Mark Moran said. “We’re scoring a lot of runs and we have had a number of come-from-behind wins this season. We are so much better than last season. We look to win the ESCC and with us hosting the Class 3A regionals and sectionals, we look to make a deep run in the state tournament” “We are really playing well this season,” Lawler added. “ Our senior leaders have all stepped up for us and our juniors have been very productive. It’s always great to be fighting for an ESCC title.

The ESCC is as tough as ever but we really believe we can win it this season. As the kids have said, with us hosting the Class 3A regionals and sectionals, if we continue to play well, we feel we can make a deep run in the tournament. “

Excessive giving can become debt Don’t allow organizations to pressure you to donate beyond your means

DEAR DAVE, My wife and I are debt-free except for our home, and we’re on Baby Steps 4 and 5. Recently, we were asked to make a large donation to a charity we already support.

We don’t have the full cash amount they asked for on hand, and after hearing that, they said we could make monthly installment payments until the donation amount was paid in full. We’re hesitant to do this because it seems a bit like debt to us. What do you think?

BEN DEAR BEN, Well, it’s not debt. There would be no repercussions, other than guilt, if you couldn’t make the full donation. So, it’s not debt. To be honest though, I don’t engage in that kind of stuff when it comes to giving.

I’m kind of uncomfortable with this, Ben. I don’t engage in making gift promises beyond what I have.

It’s not debt, but it kind of starts to feel like it, and it’s not so much living beyond your means as it is giving beyond your means. That’s just another reason it doesn’t strike the right chord with me.

My wife and I do all our giving — except for our tithe to our local church — through our family foundation. Sometimes we’ll do this giving in a couple of installments, but it’s not because we don’t have the money. It’s generally a situation where we’re walking with the charity or ministry throughout the year, and we’re observing and assessing the need.

I’d be hesitant to give a gift when I don’t have the money. Most of the time, approaches like this fall under the heading of manipulation.

I would get free tuition, but there’s another college farther from home that I like just as much — but it’s more expensive. On the plus side, it is a Christian school, and my faith is important to me. What do you think I should do?

BRADEN DEAR BRADEN, Free tuition is a major plus in my book. At the same time, I can understand your desire to get out from under mom and dad’s wings a little bit. Just don’t make the mistake of thinking that a school,

church or anything else is completely Christian. You’ll meet some of the wildest characters ever at a Christian school, just like you would at a public university. However, you would have the advantage of a built-in spiritual support network.

All things considered, and since you mentioned your faith specifically, I’d probably choose the Christian school. But I wouldn’t go into debt to make it happen. There’s absolutely no reason why you can’t work and go to school at the same time. Pay it as you go. I did it, and I finished with good grades in four years.
