On May 13 The Woodridge Rotary Club held its 8th annual Recycling Extravaganza at Cypress Cove. Over 500 vehicles dropped off goods that included electronics, items for Goodwill and SCARCE, eyeglasses for Lions Club, and worn flags for the VFW. Bond set for Downers Grove man in alleged assault with ax Man charged for allegedly striking his 80-year-old mother in the face and head with an ax

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced May 19 that bond has been set for a Downers Grove man charged with aggravated domestic battery to a senior (Class 2 Felony) for allegedly striking his 80-year-old mother in the face and head with an ax. John Flick, 57, of Downers Grove, appeared in Bond Court May 19 where Judge Joseph Bugos set bond at $500,000.

On May 14, the victim’s daughter went to visit her mother for Mother’s Day. Upon arriving at the home, the daughter noticed lacerations about her mother’s face and head. The two women then went to the hospital to seek treatment for the vic-

tim’s injuries. Upon seeing the woman’s injuries, hospital authorities alerted the Downers Grove Police Department. An investigation conducted by the Downers Grove Police Department led to Flick as the person allegedly responsible for the injuries to his mother. It is alleged that on the evening of May 13, Flick returned to the home he shared with his mother. It is further alleged that at some point in time Flick repeatedly hit his mother about the head and face with an ax.

“Domestic violence can take many forms and is not confined to spousal abuse,” Berlin said. “The allegations in this case however, are truly sickening.

The very idea that someone would attack another human being with an ax, let alone their own mother, is shocking.

I would like to thank the Downers Grove Police Department for their work on this case. I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorney Nicole Wilkes-English for her efforts in holding Mr. Flick responsible for the severe injuries he allegedly inflicted upon his own mother.”

Flick’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 12, in front of Judge Liam Brennan. Members of the public are reminded that these complaints contain only charges and are not proof of the defendant’s guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Dog boarding facility finds new home Pete & Max Pet Resorts will occupy former Walgreens site at 7221 Lemont Road

A dog boarding facility is coming to Downers Grove despite discontent expressed by residents at the Downers Grove Village Council’s May 16 meeting.

In a pair of 5-2 votes, Village officials approved a special use with an amendment limiting the number of dogs allowed on site. Commissioners Nicole Walus and William Waldack voted it down.

In a 2-5 vote, the council failed to pass a proposal with an amendment restricting the dog boarding facility to indoor use. Walus and Waldack were the dissenting votes.

The agreement between the Village and Pete & Max Pet Resorts stipulates that 94 dogs can housed inside the facility at any one time and 35 in the outdoor play area.

Pete & Max Pet Resorts will occupy the former Walgreens site at 7221 Lemont Road.

Attendee Nola Armento, of Downers Grove, recognizes the concerns raised by residents in recent weeks, and sought to share her professional experience working as a realtor for more than 40 years.

“I have a lot of friends and clients in the area that were talking about [this proposal,]” she said. “Being a realtor for so many years, there aren’t too many kennels and boarding places with that many dogs that don’t back up to either railroads or warehouses, or as the one speaker suggested, the new Doggie Depot going into the old piano building, which is an excellent location.”

Armento said though it’s hard to say how much the proposal could affect residents and property values, her experience is that reason for concern is valid.

“I know it’ll affect the amount of showings and the amount of people that may otherwise be interested in that neighborhood,” she said.

Commissioner Bob Barnett disagreed.

“You got to realize that’s all spec-

ulative stuff, ” he said. “It really is.

It’s very hard to quantify that.”

A number of other residents spoke out against the proposed special use for the dog board facility citing concerns for the outdoor play area and potential harm.

Marvin Schaar, of Downers Grove, referenced other dog boarding proposals reviewed by the council and said this petitioner’s application is unlike the two most recent requests.

“In its application, the petitioner has tried to say that it is just like these other cases,” he said. “On Exhibit A of its petition it says and I quote, ‘Nearly all of Pete & Max activities will be conducted indoors.’

But unlike 63rd street, which has only an indoor play area, and Doggie Depot, which has four indoor play areas and one small outside play area, Pete & Max are planning two play areas—one outside and a smaller one inside. The preponderance of activities will be outside.”

Schaar said it’s important for the council to look outward to surrounding communities to gauge concerns for such special uses and the actions other officials have taken.

“I mentioned last time [at the Downers Grove Village Council’s May 9 meeting] in Hinsdale of March of 2017, there was a proposal for a special use for a dog boarding facility,” he said. “The Hinsdale Board of Trustees expressed concern about an outdoor play area, and as a result, the applicant submitted a revised plan with the outdoor play area removed. In Westmont, animal boarding is not even allowed as a permitted special use. In Darien, there are strict rules governing outdoor play areas, and presently, the Village of Darien has none of them. In rejecting this proposal tonight, the Village [of

Downers Grove] would have good company among its neighboring communities in acting to protect its residents.”

In response to community concerns voiced for noise that could stem from the dog boarding facility, the petitioner submitted a redesign of a proposed outdoor play area. The changes consist of the fence enclosing the space to be heightened from six to eight feet and a double row of baffles overlapping each other.

Schaar said the revisions made to the proposal since the council’s May 2 meeting are not a “gamechanger.”

“It is essentially the same plan,” he said.

Waldack recognizes the community’s concerns, and questioned if approving the special use for the dog day care is worth the sales tax generated.

“Is having an outdoor facility that advantageous to the Village?” he asked.

The site is question, located at 7221 Lemont Road, formerly housed Walgreens.

Waldack said the proposed use for the facility is harmful to residents residing or working in the vicinity.

“This will certainly not improve things,” he said.

Barnett said his concern was that Downers Grove officials did not have a solid path to remedying potential issues related to dog noise.

The process of calling the police or code enforcement anytime dog barking creates a nuisance was not sufficient, he said.

Village officials explained that such matters, if they arose, would be brought to the council for review.

Barnett said this process should help alleviate some of the concerns raised.

“I don’t see with the remedies available to us, I don’t see how that shouldn’t be a potential that’s engaged and we see how it goes,” he said.

Commissioner Marge Earl said she has been stuck on this proposal and maintained that “as a dog owner and lover myself, living in a neighborhood full of dog lovers, SEE DOG PAGE 5

Your help needed in locating photos of Illinois Vietnam veterans Photos needed of Illinois vets for Wall of Faces in Washington, D.C. When the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. was finished in 1983, the wall listed approximately 58,000 servicemen and women who had either died in action or went missing in action during the Vietnam War. Because of a fire at a government storage facility in 1973, the U.S. military lost millions of personnel records, including many of those who were listed on the wall.

Although the military and other organizations made efforts to recover lost data, 24,000 veterans listed on the wall had no photo in their military records in 2013.

Thanks to a coordinated effort among Illinois newspapers, nearly 100 photos of Illinois veterans have been located and submitted to the Wall of Faces (available at: http:// www.vvmf.org/wall-of-faces/); however, as of May 1, Illinois still has 528 service members who do not have a photo in the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund’s database.

We need your help. Below is a list of servicemen and/or women from DuPage, Will, Kendall and collar Cook counties that do not have a photo on the Wall of Faces.

Do you know any of them? Did you go to high school or serve with one of these men or women?

Check your photo archives and yearbooks.

Talk to neighbors and former classmates. Please help honor these veterans by putting a face to the name.

According to the VVMF, the wall was constructed to remind everyone that the names on the wall “represent unique people with hopes, dreams and desires—people who were loved and who are missed every day by someone they left behind.”

“It is important for us to honor

these people who served and sacrificed for their country. But, we should also remember that they were people, just like us. They enjoyed crazy adventures with high school friends.

They had crushes, fell in love and got married. Some even had children. They were people with special talents and many goals. There are so many stories on The Wall—stories of people as diverse as our nation itself.”

Please help honor these young men and women who gave their lives in Southeast Asia.

The first step to telling their stories is to locate their photos.

Police showing zero tolerance for holiday Seat-belt enforcement campaign will take place May 15 through May 30 As summer kicks off and travel increases, the Lisle Police Department is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation to remind motorists to Click It or Ticket.

The seat-belt enforcement campaign will take place May 15 through May 30, concurrent with one of the busiest travel and holiday weekends of the year.

Click It or Ticket enforces seatbelt and car-seat use to keep all motorists safe.

As the Memorial Day weekend approaches and the summer vacation season ramps up, the Lisle Police Department want to make sure people are doing everything they can to stay safe in the unfortunate event of a crash.

The most recent crash data from the National Highway Traf-

fic Safety Administration found that 43 percent of passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes in 2015 were unrestrained.

That percentage increases to 57 percent when just looking at crashes that occur between 6 p.m. and 5:59 a.m.

That’s why one focus of the Click It or Ticket campaign is nighttime enforcement.

Participating law enforcement agencies will be taking a noexcuses approach, writing citations day and night.

Benet’s Munson repeats as IHSA girls pole vault state champion

CHARLESTON – A season ago, Benet Academy’s Ali Munson won the IHSA Class 2A title in the pole vault.

This year, the Redwings moved up to Class 3A, but Munson did not miss a beat as she repeated as state champion clearing 12feet, 3-inches at O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University - just up a class.

“It is pretty big,” Munson said of the title. “Once you go and win it once, it is really hard to come and win it again. I won’t lie, there was a lot of pressure, but I kind of thrive under pressure.”

Munson found herself under unexpected pressure in the preliminaries when, after she skipped on all heights through 11 feet, needed all three jumps into a head wind to clear 11-3 and qualify for the finals.

toes with that jump, but I was happy I was able to get it done,” she said.

While she was hoping for a higher vault, Munson will take the win – her third pole vault state medal.

“It was a little frustrating because I didn’t hit my goal height wise, but it was nice to come out and win this,” she said.

Downers Grove North senior Emma Moravec finished second in the 800 run with a time of 2:15.08.

“I had a really great time this weekend,” she said. “Being able to finish second in the 800 and medal again in the 4x400 is amazing. I am really happy to be able to say that I finished my senior year with two more state medals and it is just crazy that it is all over.

“It was really cool that everyone that competed in the preliminaries made it to the finals in at least one of their events

and that was pretty special.”

Moravec also teamed with senior Gina Kowalewicz, junior Rachel Sprague and sophomore Kimberly Brent in the 1600 to place fourth in 3:56.90.

Downers Grove medaled a pair of long jumpers as North junior Isabel Maletich placed sixth with 18-06.

“This is my first year going to state in the long jump, so I just feel really good about getting sixth place,” she said. “This was a really crazy season. I have always been known as only a triple jumper, but this year, my long jump took off and it shows the hard work really paid off.”

South junior Maddie Manganiello placed seventh with a jump of 18-03.25 and credits having less pressure on her this season.

“It was amazing. Last year I was ranked first and I ended up

fouling all of my jumps in prelims, she said. “So, this year I made finals and I can thank God for that. Today was a bit rough, I wish it turned out better, but I am happy with the way it turned out.

“Last year I just came in with so much pressure on myself and this year I just went out and had fun and it was out of my hands. I still have one more year, so I just want to come back and get top three for sure. I will keep working my butt off and it will hopefully be mu fourth time at state and I will have experience and control over my emotions.”

South freshman Brenna Cohoon was 17th in the 3200 in 11:14.12, while senior Katie Stapleton was 22nd in 11:26.99.

In the relays, North’s Faith LaMantia (Sr.), Kimberly Brent (So.), Keside Olekanma (Jr.) and Celeste Bonga (Fr.) qualified in the 800 relay in 1:43.17. The

quartet ran a 48.82 in the 400 relay and did not qualify.

The South quartet of sophomore Rebecca Versaskas, junior Gillian Thomas, sophomore Melissa Weidner and sophomore Alisha Macas posted a 9:44.39 in the 3200 run.

Munson also competed in the long jump, leaping 17-02.75, while Maletich fouled on the triple jump.

In the running events, Kowalewicz posted a 2:16.85 in the 800 run, while South freshman Erin Reidy posted a 5:13.79 in the 1600 run and South senior Nicole Muccianti put up a 25.49 in the 200 dash.

In the 300 hurdles South senior Soren Umali posted a 48.94.

She also ran a 15.49 in the 110 hurdles.

Benet senior Emma Jones posted a 15.13 in the 110 hurdles and South senior had a 12.63 in the 100 dash.

Giving wisely is good lesson County offers free DEAR DAVE, Our son is 13, and he wants to give half the money he received for his birthday to the nursery at our church.

They need new baby toys and things like that.

Should we let him give that much, or should we tell him that maybe 25 percent is enough?

KYLE DEAR KYLE, I hope you’re proud of this kid.

He’s a got a good heart, and it’s probably a reflection of the way his mom and dad are raising him.

I like this a lot.

I would very gently, and without any commanding or control verbiage, use some examples from the Bible when talking to him.

There are several things to be learned about money from Scripture, and the concepts of generosity and giving are in there.

There’s also a verse that says we need to take care of our own households first.

Another one says in the house of the wise are stores of food and oil.

We need to do all of these things with money — in balance.

Thoughtfully and prayerfully decide what your giving amount will be, so that you don’t destroy

your ability to save and do other important things.

Talk to him about these concepts, then ask him to wait two or three days and think about his decision.

If he comes back and says he still wants to give half of it, I would encourage him to do so.

But slow things down a little, and make sure this isn’t a kneejerk reaction. You need to be a wise giver, not an impulsive giver!

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, My husband and I are currently in Baby Step 2, and paying off all our debt except for our home.

A friend recently told us to pay off everything except for the credit card debt.

She says we can then settle for a far less amount and not have so

much money going out the door.

This feels a little unethical to me. What are your thoughts?

JENNIFER DEAR JENNIFER, There’s a good reason this idea feel unethical to you — it is unethical!

Would a good friend, a smart friend, encourage you to do something as dishonorable as not pay a bill you’re morally and legally obligated to pay?

I don’t think so.

If you’re able to pay your bills, you pay your bills.

It’s as simple as that.

Now, if you honestly can’t pay the bill, and you have to settle upon a mutually agreed upon amount with the creditor or collector, then it’s okay at that point to try and reach a settlement.

Otherwise, it’s a simple question of ethics. Pay the bill!

latex paint recycling DuPage County is hosting a Latex Paint Recycling Program at the County’s Woodridge Greene Valley Wastewater Treatment Facility starting June 1. Residents can drop off their usable, unwanted latex paint during designated summer collections free of charge.

The County will accept latexbased paint that has not been frozen, is less than 10 years old and has not been mixed with other products. The paint will be filtered and re-blended into a variety of colors, types and finishes.

The recycled paint will then be offered free to residents, businesses and non-profit organizations in 5-gallon containers. While commercial entities can pick up the recycled paint, drop off is limited to residents.

Paint from businesses, contractors or commercial entities will not be accepted.

“DuPage County is pleased to offer this program. It has multiple benefits, reducing the amount of waste that ends up

in landfills. It also enables the reuse of valuable latex paint at no cost to participating residents,” said Environmental Committee Chairwoman Amy Grant.

Homeowners can drop off their latex paint at the Woodridge Greene Valley Wastewater Treatment Facility, 7900 S. Route 53 in Woodridge, Monday to Saturday from June 1 through July 29 from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Recycled paint will be distributed during the same hours starting June 8. The site will be closed July 1 to 4.

Since the start of the program in 2001, the County has collected more than 87,000 gallons of paint and distributed roughly 45,000 gallons of recycled paint.

The program has served more than 17,000 residents.
