Families invited to fishing derby at Silver Lake June 10 Friendly Competition for Kids 15 and Under Anglers 15 and under are invited to drop a line at the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s 32nd annual Just for Kids Fishing Derby on Sunday, June 10 from 8 a.m. to noon at Silver Lake at Blackwell Forest Preserve in Warrenville.

Kids can learn about fishing and improve their skills during this free family-friendly event.

Prizes will be awarded to winners in four age groups for the largest fish in three species categories — bass, bluegill and miscellaneous — as well as to winners of the casting contest. Register online or by calling Visitor Services at 630-933-7248 weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Kids can also register at the event.

“Nothing beats seeing the ex-

citement on a child’s face when he or she catches a fish for the first time,” said Forest Preserve District of DuPage County President Joe Cantore. “It’s pure magic.”

The main entrance to Blackwell is on the north side of Butterfield Road 0.25 mile west of Winfield Road and 1 mile east of Route 59.

Fishing is one of the most popular activities in the forest preserves, and visitors can fish on more than 30 lakes, ponds and rivers.

The District stocks many with bass, pike, walleye and other species.

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County has been connecting people to nature for more than 100 years.

More than 4 million people visit its 60 forest preserves, 145 miles of trails, five education centers and scores of programs each year.

Bond at $750K for man charged with sex assault is facing one count of Criminal Sexual Assault, a Class 1 Felony.

On May 18, at approximately 12:30 a.m., the Wheaton Police Department was notified of someone screaming for help near the PADS Shelter in Wheaton.

Upon their arrival, officers found the victim with dirt on her face and scratches and cuts to her upper body. It is alleged

that at approximately 12:30 that night, Davidson approached the woman near the Prairie Path and demanded sex from her. It is further alleged that when she declined, Davidson dragged her into a wooded area by her hair and sexually assaulted her. It is further alleged that following the assault, Davidson fled.

An investigation by the Wheaton Police Department led to Davidson who was arrested and taken into custody without incident on May 20.

“Sexual assaults are degrad-

ing and among the most invasive crimes a victim can endure,” Berlin said. “Physically and emotionally, the damage caused by a sex crime can fester, leaving victims to suffer not only at the time of the assault but possibly for years to come. I would like to commend the Wheaton Police Department for their outstanding work in identifying Mr. Davidson as a suspect in this case. I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorney Tom Minser for his efforts in preparing a strong case against this defendant.”

“This is another example of exceptional teamwork and cooperation between Wheaton patrol officers, investigators, forensics and DuPage prosecutors,” Volpe said.

“In a matter of just a few days after this horrific crime was committed, the alleged offender, Robert Davidson, is in custody with a formidable bond set. Wheaton Detectives Stelmar and Johnson deserve special praise for their relentless investigation into this crime over the past three days.”

Davidson’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 15.

Chief Operating Officer Laura Ann Spencer selected the Village of Burr Ridge as the new headquarters of Perma-Seal Basement Systems, replacing their facilities in Downers Grove.

Spencer unveiled the nearly 140,000 square-foot space by

sharing interior and exterior drone footage to the team at their recent 11th annual company meeting.

Perma-Seal chose Newman Architecture of Naperville to design the new space, which will include a community training

facility, collaborative office area, and efficient warehouse/operations space.

The building, located at 412 Rockwell Court in Burr Ridge, was previously occupied by Panduit Corporation. The move to Burr Ridge from their exist-

ing Downers Grove location is planned for late 2018. PermaSeal also has two additional facilities, located in Elk Grove Village and Hammond, Ind., which allows them to serve customers throughout the Chicago area and Northwest Indiana areas .

WWII caused changes to way of life, economy in IL Thousands of men enlisted and thousands more came through the state

BY ANDY KRAVETZ OF THE JOURNAL STAR Washington, Illinois, resident Mary Kerr said the war caused everyone to sacrifice.

“When we went into Iraq in 2001, there was no difference in my life because we went to war. But then, everyone was affected; from Victory Gardens to rationing of items to the draft, everyone was in,” she said.

Mothers saved tin cans and foil. Life went on, she said, but it was different.

“We went on with the churches and the schools, but it wasn’t the same. The Boy Scouts went on but they had paper drives,” Kerr said. “Nothing was the same as it was before Dec. 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor.”

THOUSANDS ENLISTED FROM ILLINOIS When war was declared in December 1941, thousands of men enlisted and thousands more came through the state either en route to or arriving at training stations.

The U.S. Naval Station Great Lakes had opened prior to World War I as a recruit training center, but by the early 1930s enrollment had slowed. World War II boosted the population at the station from 6,000 to 68,000, according to the Navy. In all, about 1 million sailors trained at the facility in North Chicago until the war ended in 1945.

Thousands of others, including many World War I veterans, flocked to the Illinois State Militia, also known as the Reserve Militia, where they agreed to serve for two years. They stood watch over bridges, railroads and other transit centers. When the war ended, hundreds were activated to serve as shuttle drivers in Chicago as the large number of GIs returning overwhelmed buses and trains, according the Illinois Secretary of State’s office.

By the end of 1945, Illinois had registered 1,954,674 men between the ages of 18 and 38 at 361 separate local draft boards. Of these, 629,516 were called to serve. An additional 328,338 enlisted

of their own accord bringing the total number of men from Illinois entering the services to 957,854.

The number of Illinois women joining the military during the war was 13,587.

Counting those who already were in the military and those whose National Guard units were activated, Illinois supplied the U.S. armed forces with nearly 1 million of its citizens during the course of the war.

From Dec. 7, 1941, through Sept. 2, 1945, 17,521 Illinois servicemen and women were killed in combat or later died of wounds or injuries sustained in battle.

CATERPILLAR’S ROLE In Peoria, production of earth-moving equipment made by Caterpillar Inc. had already picked up in pace due to the federal Lend-Lease program, supplying goods and war material to Allied countries. Caterpillar tractors were already being used by the Allies in the early stages of World War II, according to Journal Star archives. But once the United States entered the war, production escalated. Bulldozers were vital to the war effort as they allowed creation of air fields and the cleanup of debris after battle.

Central Illinois factories geared up for greater production when the United States entered the war. The Defense Department initially asked for a variety of equipment from Caterpillar, including smaller items such as transmissions for tanks and undercarriages for howitzers.

Then, according to a Caterpillar historian, the Defense Department decreed for production to switch exclusively to motor graders and track-type tractors on a large scale.

Tom Emery, a freelance writer from Carlinville, said the state’s economy was booming during the war. Factories were humming with wartime activity.

“The industrial cities were cranking out products that were war related,” Emery said.

Many blacks moved to Illinois during the war, particularly to Chicago for jobs. And female employment grew by 50 percent.

ROSIE THE RIVETER One of those Rosie the Riveters was Ruth Lockart, who recently participated in the oral history project at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library. The

project was to reach out to World War II veterans and those who grew up during that time.

Lockart worked as a riveter at the Howard Aircraft Corp. in Chicago. When America went to war, she was on the family farm in Paris but she wanted to get involved in the war effort and moved to Chicago where her sister lived. She trained as a riveter at the American Aircraft Institute and later went to the Howard Aircraft Corp. where she helped to construct a Navy training plane.

“I think there were different models but I don’t know too much about them.

The one I worked on was the Nightengale,” Lockart said. “We’d go to the factory at 8 a.m. and then we’d be off at 5 in the evening. We’d take a streetcar to the factory.”

Chicago, she said, was different then than now, saying it felt like a small town when she lived there.

“I have always been proud that I was a Rosie the Riveter,” Lockart said. After the war, she went to beauty school in Paris and married a soldier who fought in the European Theater.

POW CAMPS Illinois was the home to several prisoner of war camps including one in Washington, a few miles outside of Peoria.

From 1944 to 1945, the village was the site of a small POW camp. The camp started with 50 German prisoners who helped make K-rations for the troops.

The camp expanded over the months to have more than 200 POWs, according to a book published by Mary Kerr about the Washington camp.

Kerr is working on another book about central Illinois during World War II, and including a chapter on a POW camp in the center of Eureka.

“Many people didn’t have contact with the prisoners and didn’t know if they were ‘good or bad,’” Kerr said. “But if you had contact with them, you probably went away thinking that they were OK.” The kids were very intrigued by the POWs, she said, noting that many would ride their bikes to the camp and talk to prisoners.

The national seat-belt enforcement campaign will take place through May 28, concurrent with one of the busiest travel and holiday weekends of the year.

Click It or Ticket enforces seat belt and car-seat use to keep all motorists safe.

“Our law enforcement personnel see firsthand the loss of life when people refuse to buckle up,” said Deputy Chief Ron Wilke. “It’s such a simple thing, and it should be an automatic response when

you get into a vehicle. As the Memorial Day weekend approaches and the summer vacation season ramps up, we want to make sure people are doing everything they can to stay safe in the unfortunate event of a crash.”

The most recent crash data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that 43 percent of passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes in 2015 were unrestrained. That

percentage increases to 57 percent when just looking at crashes that occur between 6 p.m. and 5:59 a.m. That’s why one focus of the Click It or Ticket campaign is nighttime enforcement. Participating law enforcement agencies will be taking a no-excuses approach, writing citations day and night. Motorists caught not buckled up will be ticketed, and those caught driving impaired will be arrested.

MEDAL Locals earn IHSA state track and field medals in three events including first hardware for some

CHARLESTON — For the Downers Grove South quartet of seniors Kelley Hackbarth, Gillian Thomas, junior Rebecca Versaskas and sophomore Erin Reidy, the goal heading to the IHSA Class 3A state finals in O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University, was to get on the podium and earn the first state medal for any of them.

Mission accomplished.

The Mustang foursome posted a time of 9-minutes, 17.20-seconds in the 4x800-meter relay and claimed third place in the state’s large-school division.

“We run as one unit – like it is one person running the race and not four individuals and that is very special,” Thomas said. “I am very proud of these girls.”

Not only was this the first state medal for the four – it was the first time they had ever competed in the state finals.

The Mustangs had a plan heading in and they worked it to perfection both in the finals and the preliminaries – coming from a trail pack to finish in the top.

“We run for each other and because we are chasing them and we work up and that is easier than people chasing you,” Versaskas said. “Erin is a lot faster than most of the girls out there and what works best for her is when she is trying to catch girls in general.”

Reidy knew the team just needed to execute.

“Our first lap had to be patient and then we could let it rip the last 300 and that was why we all caught the girls ahead,” she said.

Slammers starting to find a groove The Joliet Slammers (3-6) beat the Windy City Thunderbolts (53) 3-2 thanks to a walk off home run by Justin Garcia.

The Thunderbolts started their

scoring in the top of the 2nd inning when Ronnie Healy singled in Tyler Straub putting Windy City on the board at 1-0. Riley Krane added on for Windy City after an

RBI single in the top of the 5th that brought home Blair Beck making it 2-0.

RJ Thompson put the Slammers on the board with a two out

two run single in the bottom of the 6th that scored Chaz Meadows and Trenton Hill tying the game at 2.

In the bottom of the 9th Justin Garcia hit a walk off home run winning it for the Slammers with a score of 3-2.

Joliet returns home Friday, May 25th vs. the Southern Illinois Miners. Friday night is Rock Night with another Fireworks Friday.

A game earlier, the Slammers fell 3-0 to WIndy City despite the efforts of Liam O’Sullivan, a 6-foot, 3-inch right hander from South Grafton, Massachusetts, retired the first 14 batters he faced and did not give up a hit until the top of the 5th, when Windy City first baseman Tyler Straub hit a single to right.

The ThunderBolts starting pitcher, Jake Welch, gave up two hits in the first 2 innings, including a single up the middle gap by Slammers’ first baseman Trenton Hill. Following the at bat, Welch retired 13 straight Joliet batters.

The Slammers were trailing 2-0 in the middle of the 4th but took a lead in the bottom half of the inning and didn’t look back.

Travis Bolin and Ridge HoopiHaslam each collected an RBI in the inning for the Slammers.

Joliet’s offense continued its tear in the bottom of the 6th inning posting a four-spot with Chaz Meadows forcing a bad throw with the bases loaded. Travis Bolin, Cody Clark and Alex Krupa scored on the error making it a 6-2 game.

That was the second win in

a row for Joliet as the Slammers found their offensive stride Thursday morning against the visiting Otters of Evansville in a 7-2 victory.

After dropping the last two games to the Otters, losing them 6-3 on Tuesday and 6-4 on Wednesday, the Slammers wanted to ensure that they came out of their opening home series with a win.

The Slammers had struggled in their previous games and could not find their way out of difficult situations.

When runners were in scoring position, they were unable to bring them home. T his was not the case Thursday morning.

After starting pitcher Scot Hoffman got the Slammers out of a bases loaded jam, the team went to work at the plate, driving in three runs in the top of the 1st.

Third basemen Danny Zardon would start the scoring with a single into center field to bring home Thompson from second base.

After an offensive push and a few walks at the plate, second baseman Hoopi-Haslam hit a fly ball to shallow left field that passed the fielder and scored two runners on base.

The Slammers would lead, 3-0,after one inning.

A pitching mistake by Evansville pitcher Nathan Foriest in the bottom of the 2nd allowed the Slammers to advance runners and score one more run.

Two innings later, Slammers DH Justin Garcia would connect with an outside pitch and shot it over the right field wall for a 340 foot home run (5-0).

Scot Hoffman would continue to pitch until the 6th inning. He allowed only four hits and gave up no runs in five innings, striking out four batters.

The Otters would find two runs in the 7th, including a Zach Welz sacrifice fly (5-2). But the Slammers would fight back and score two runs of their own.

An RJ Thompson single to Otters first baseman Dulin was bobbled and scored Hoopii-Haslam from third (7-2).

The Slammers would close out the game and walk away with their first win of the season with a final score of 7-2.

“It is tough to start in the back because you can get discouraged easy and think that you will never make it up, but we have a really unique team and we knew what was going to happen,” Thomas said.

Hart is a national powerhouse and went on Saturday to claim her second-straight distance triple crown by winning the cross country state title as well as the 1600 and 3200 runs in track.

Cohoon let Hart do her thing and did not try and stay with a runner who flirted with breaking a national record.

“I think that was the smartest thing for me,” Cohoon said.

“I just focused on hanging with the people I felt comfortable with. I didn’t focus too much on time today and kind of just went off of feel and I knew I had raced with a lot of these people before and I just stayed with them and I think it worked out really well.”

Being that she had one of the faster seed times, Cohoon ran in the second heat of the 3200 – one that say the temperatures climb and the sun beat down on the runners – much different than the first heat where the clouds hid the sun and the ran cooled the competitors.

“I was ready for the heat, since it was really hot last year. I just made sure I stayed hydrated and was cooling off a lot before the race,” Cohoon said.

So matter what was going on – she wanted to earn a state medal.

“I wanted to be on the stand – I knew I wanted to be in the top nine,” she said. “I knew if I stayed with the top 10 or so runners, I would be in good shape.”

The highest place for local runners came from Downers Grove North senior Isabel

Maletich, who was second in the triple jump with a leap of 39feet, 5.25-inches.

She also competed in the long jump, finishing just out of the medal with an 11th-place leap of 18-4.

The medal was Maletich’s fourth in as many years, tying her with Tracy Caughlin for the most-ever individual medals earned by a female track and field athlete at North. Caughlin earned four distance race medals from 1982-85.

Emma Moravec has six total medals from 2031-17, but only three individual.

Benet Academy also competed in the finals of the 4x800 run, finishing 11th and just missing a medal as the team of juniors Mae Tully and Jessica Jugovich and freshmen Meaghan Andrews and Elisabeth Camic

posted a time of 9:29.56.

In the long jump, Downers Grove South senior Maddie Manganiello posted a jump of 15-feet, 8.5-inches.

Benet Academy junior Catherine Meehan cleared 9-6 in the pole vault, but did not qualify for finals, while Downers North senior Naomi Boyd had a discus throw of 114-06.

On the track, the Downers Grove North 4x100 relay team of freshman McKenna Cinotte, junior Brooke Peters, senior senior Keside Olekanma and junior Kimberly Brent ran a time of 48.44 in the prelims.

The North quartet of Cinotte, Peters, Olekanma and freshman Mia Bowers ran a time of 1:44.26 in the 4x200 relay.

Individually, Brent competed in the 100 dash (12.73) and 200 dash (58.33).

Wisz All-Region for NCC The North Central College baseball team continues to make history, as a program record four players were named to the D3baseball. com All-Central Region teams, while Michael Mateja four players were named to the D3baseball. com All-Central Region teams, while Michael Mateja becomes the first player in program history to earn back-to-back Central Region Player of the Year awards.

Mateja backed up his 2017 Central Region Player of the Year honor by adding a 2018 award to his trophy case, finishing the season batting an astounding .444, the eighth-highest average in a singleseason in program history. Mate-

ja’s 72 hits this season rank tied for fifth in a single-season.

Woodridge’s Mike Wisz was also named to the first team, as his 73 runs batted in this season led all NCAA Division III players and fell just one shy of breaking the program’s single-season record set by Ken Ritter ‘88 in 1986. Wisz hit 408 on the season while leading the team with 73 hits, good for third on the single-season list, while his 21 doubles rank second.

Additionally, his seven sacrifice flies rank second, his 127 total bases rank third and his 179 at-bats rank seventh.

Joining Mateja and Wisz are Rob Marinec and Russell Hoh.

Help them parents help themselves DEAR DAVE, My parents have always been bad with money, and recently they lost their home to foreclosure. They found another place to live, and they both work, but since the foreclosure my dad has been asking me for money on a regular basis. He tries to make me feel guilty, and he calls or asks me to come over to talk about it when my mom isn’t home.

He even asked for half of the bonus I received at work the other day. I know they need help, but I’m not sure what to do.

ELI DEAR ELI, I can tell you love your parents, because you’re looking for the best way to help them. I think your brain knows what to do, but your heart is having a hard time doing it.

The first thing you’re going to have to accept is your father is being very manipulative right now.

Put an end to these private meetings and phone calls once and for all. If he wants to talk, make sure he understands it will only happen with your mom in the room.

Second, understand there’s nothing wrong with helping your folks get back on their feet. However, any financial help you give them

should be temporary in nature, and it should be a gift. Don’t get involved in giving them money every month just because they raised you. That’s not how this works. When you permanently subsidize someone, you take away their dignity. You also change their status, and compromise their ability to stand on their own two feet.

In return, you should let them know you expect them to work toward changing their financial behaviors with the help of a quality financial counselor — one with the heart of a teacher. It’s often dif-

ficult for parents to accept advice and suggestions from their own children, but it’s for their own good.

Sit down with them, and gently let them know how much you care, and how much you want better, happier lives for them.

Students compete at state math competition Nineteen students from North High and South High in Downers Grove competed at the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) State Math Competition at the University of Illinois on May 5. “We’re incredibly proud of our students for competing at the state level,” North High math teacher and head math coach Sally Heiwig said. “It is no easy task competing against their peers from across the state, but they stayed motivated just as they did at the Regional competition.”

According to the ICTM, the contest recognizes outstanding mathematical achievement, encourages independent study, stimulates interest in mathematics, and provides a wholesome meeting ground for students and teachers of mathematics through academic competition.

North students excel on National Spanish Exam Eighty-four Downers Grove North High School students studying Spanish attained national recognition for excellent performance on the 2018 National Spanish Examinations. Students earned 8 Gold, 17 Silver and 15 Bronze medals along with 44 Honorable Mentions.

“Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious,” said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, National Director of the Exams. “The exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with over 150,000 students participating in 2018.”

Students from Downers Grove North High School have a long history of high achievement on these exams and were taught by Spanish teachers Joshua Bodenheimer, Ruth Dukala, Paula Fernández, Sonja Kalic, Jennifer Mariman, and Jeanne Seyller.
