Council postpones vote on animal boarding facility Council will consider amending the ordinance to regulate the Village’s water rates at its May 16 meeting

The Downers Grove Village Council delayed a vote May 9 to consider the prospect of issuing a special use permit to allow an animal boarding facility on the Village’s south side.

“I believe we were able to get notice out to most folks that there’s been a request by the petitioner to defer any action on that until next week at the earliest,” Mayor Martin Tully said.

Pete & Max Pet Resorts is requesting approval to occupy the former Walgreens site located at 7221 Lemont Road. The matter was last reviewed at the Downers Grove Village Council’s May 2 meeting, at which point a number of residents expressed concern with the proposal.

Though consideration of the special use permit was included

on the agenda, no vote took place.

Members of the council did not hold any discussion on the matter.

Tully said it is not uncommon for a petitioner to hold off on a request as a proposal is reworked before returning to the council.

Downers Grove resident Marvin Schaar, who also appeared at the council’s May 2 with a petition signed by 179 residents opposing the proposal as drafted, said he still felt compelled to come forward to speak on behalf of himself and others in the community.

“While we’re disappointed that we could not proceed this evening, we will continue on,” he said. “Our focus will continue to be protecting the welfare of the residents in the vicinity and trying to achieve a winwin. So, we’ll read the petitioners revised plan very carefully and get back to you with our thoughts and comments.”

VILLAGE AMENDS ORDINANCE TO REGULATE WATER RATES Also at that meeting, Downers Grove officials reviewed an ordinance that could apply a 1.67 increase to water rates charged to residents.

“Simply put, this ordinance would increase the Village of Downers Grove’s water rates for all customers by 1.1 percent,” Village Manager David Fieldman said.

“This increase would cover the cost that the Village pays of purchasing water directly from the DuPage Water Commission, which supplies all of our water.”

Commissioner William Waldack questioned why the council is amending the water rate mid-year and suggested that maybe, the Village should pass this measure when the council starts looking at next year’s budget, at which point another increase is in the works.

Tully said that’s a fair question for Waldack to ask.

Typically, the ordinance to regulate the water rate is introduced by Village officials when they begin budget discussions.

The changes in the ordinance, if approved at all at once, positions Village’s residents to be charged at double the water rate.

The Village did not budget for a water rate increase in its fiscal year 2017 annual comprehensive budget.

Fieldman said the water rate change is happening to all of the purchasers of the DuPage Water Commission and it’s real.

Plan return from travels Make returning from vacation a little easier You’re probably pretty good at planning and organizing your vacations and other trips. But have you ever given thought to how to make the end of your trip just as organized as the beginning?

Having recently returned from a threeweek vacation with no access to electronics (it was heavenly!), I’ve recently put these tips into action myself. Following them not only helped me ease back into civilization, but has also left me in good shape for my next trip.

Unpack thoroughly.

Don’t be tempted to stash your suitcase in a corner and keep returning to it to retrieve items as you realize the things you need are still in there. Spend 15 minutes pulling everything out (be sure to check all the zippered compartments and pockets) and getting each item where it belongs – laundry in the hamper (or better yet, in the washer), toiletries in the bathroom (unless you keep them in your suitcase to be ready for the next trip),

Prepare for your next trip. Rather than doing a last-minute scramble to restock toiletries or repair a broken carryon wheel, make note of what you need to replenish or repair. Add items to your shopping list so you’re ready to roll when the next travel opportunity arises.

Update your packing list. Make note of items you wish you’d taken with you, as well as items you took but wish you hadn’t. For example, I wish I’d brought my long undies on a recent backpacking trip, but could have done with one less short-sleeved shirt.

As vivid as the details may have been when you took the pictures, it’s amazing how quickly that information is forgotten.

Turn off your “on vacation” message. If you’ve recorded a phone message to tell callers you’re away, or set up an email auto-responder to let people know it will be a while before you respond to them, be sure to turn it off once you return. I cheat a bit by having my out-of-office messages indicate I’ll be gone a few days beyond my planned return date. That gives me a few days to get caught up on things and edit my photos. Oops, now my secret is out.

Veteran Downers Grove North team is looking to make a deep run into the IHSA postseason this year

Downers Grove North had a youth movement a couple of years ago with several talented players getting varsity experience.

Now, those players are juniors and seniors and have led the Trojans on a run to the top seed in their own sectional complex.

“The program used to not be the best, so the past three to four years we’ve been really working to build up the program,” senior forward Emily Redpath said.

“The seniors have been together for three years and we’ve built a lot of chemistry.”

“We’ve been playing together for a long time,” senior midfielder Maggie Neverly said.

“Some of us have been playing together since nine or 10 years old. We came in together as freshmen and sophomores and we have played in a lot of big games together and I think that big game experience will help us in the playoffs.”

Even with the veteran team returning, the Trojans have still caught people by surprise.

“When we came into the season, expectations from the outside weren’t very high, but within the program they were high,” Redpath said. “We knew coming in we had a really solid group

of juniors and seniors and we pulled up some underclassmen who have really helped. Now we’re playing from the top looking down and we have to keep the expectations going and play our hardest no matter who we play.”

Despite being the top seed, it is hard to pencil DGN in to the sectionals as it will have to likely get past No. 6 seed Downers South in a regional final at Downers South at 6 p.m. Friday.

Downers South faced off with No. 9 seed Whitney Young Tuesday.

“Hopefully we will win our sectional, but we have to win the regional first,” Redpath said.

“That is the first goal for us to get. We’re really excited to host the sectional.”

“We have some pressure,” Neverly said. “It is easy being the underdog. We have high expectations for us going in.”

The two crosstown rivals faced each other early in the season with the game ending in a 1-1 tie.

“It is exciting,” Neverly said. “I like big games like that. To have a crosstown game at South’s field would be huge for the community. It should be a good game.”

“I’m so excited for that,” junior midfielder Abby Swanson said.

“We’re so ready for a rematch.

Herrera in 12th (a personal-best 9:12.17) and Dan O’Keefe in 14th (9:13.81). The three now rank 15th, 16th and 19th nationally.

North Central’s 4-by-400-meter relay team of Maceo Findlay, Ben Nordman, Zach Kirby and Peyton Piron placed second in the meet with a time of 3:15.85.

Adam Poklop cleared 6’6” to place sixth in the high jump, while

Kyle Hilton placed seventh in the 110-meter hurdles (15.02) and Argeni Bailon and Gavin Cernek finished eighth in the 10,000-meter run (31:14.10) and 400-meter dash (50.82), respectively.

Hilton and Bailon both notched personal bests.

North Central will host the Gregory Invitational on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Trojans feel they are playing their best soccer as the offense has picked up steam in

recent weeks, including scoring eight goals against Plainfield Central.

“I think we’re playing some good soccer,” Neverly said.

“We’re making a lot of combination plays and playing together as a team. It’s exciting. We have a lot of talent.”

“We started the season work-

ing on having a strong back,” Swanson said. “Lately our focus has been the attacking third and how to use combination plays to get through and I think it is working well. Everyone is where they need to be.”

Teamwork will be a big key to the playoff success for the Trojans.

“We have to stay together as a unit,” Redpath said. “If we do face adversity, we have to pick each other up. We have to try to win as a team.”

“I think all of us need to trust each other and keep doing what we’re doing,” Swanson said. “We have to stay focused during the games and stay together.”

ADAM DEAR ADAM, I’ve got a bunch of real estate, and I love it. But I wouldn’t go the crowdfunding route as a way to get started in real estate investing. I wouldn’t give someone money to buy real estate in a crowdfunding scenario, either.

The late Beverly Sills had a great saying: “There are no shortcuts to anyplace worth going.” Investing in real estate is wonderful when you do it right.

Get out of debt first, pay cash, and find great bargains. When you get in a hurry, and do dumb stuff like go into debt or get mixed up with partnerships in the process, real estate’s a horrible investment.

I admire your ambition, Adam. But I would advise you to follow my lead on this one.

insurance – the only kind of life insurance I recommend – up until around age 70. Depending on your overall health situation, there are a few affordable policies available past that point.

But once you get into your 70s and beyond it can be difficult to find reasonably priced coverage.

I recommend that most people have 10 to 12 times their annual income wrapped up in a good, level term life insurance policy. But honestly, you shouldn’t need life insurance at 70 or older. If you’ve been wise with your money, and saved and invested, you should be self-insured by that point. This means having plenty of cash in the bank to cover burial expenses and enough for a spouse to live on after you’re gone.
