Westmont to host annual pet promenade May 15 Westmont pet owners will have plenty to bark about May 15, during the fifth annual Westmont Pet Promenade and Party in the Park event.

The Westmont Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau and the Westmont Park District will present the free event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Ty Warner Park, near the intersection of Blackhawk Drive and Plaza Drive in Westmont.

The day will be filled with fun activities and contests including Best Pet Trick and an Agility Course for dogs. The grand finale of the Pet Promenade will be a parade of pets and their owners. Awards will be given for Best in Show, Best Costume, Largest Pet, Smallest Pet

and Most Unusual Pet. Also, there will be over 20 vendors showcasing products for pets and their owners.

Severalanimalrescueassociations will also be in attendance with pet information and pets for adoption.

“All the proceeds we make on our volunteer, hand-made items go directly to Grassroots.” Grassroots Animal Rescue volunteer Jacki Garvey said. “It’s kitten season right now and we are getting lots of kittens. We need all the help we can get.”

New this year, People’s Resource Center (PRC) will have a table so event goers can donate pet food for local pet “friends” in need.

“Often, when people make donations, they don’t always think of pet items,” said Susan Manning, PRC staff member. “This will provide a wide variety of pet food for our clients.” in conjunction with the Pet Promenade, there will be a Touch-aTruck program as well as a Flying 4

Kids kite event. The parking lot near the intersection of Blackhawk and Plaza will be full with a variety of vehicles that kids can touch, climb and explore at the Touch-A-Truck event. There will be tractors, police and fire vehicles, snow plows, and more. Also, the Chicago Kite Club will be providing demonstrations, assisting kids with making their own kites, and coordinating a kite candy drop at 2 p.m.

This event presents a unique opportunity for families to come to the park and enjoy a variety of activities. Food vendors will also be on-hand or you can bring your own picnic. K-Hits 104.3 Radio Station will broadcast live from the event.

Founders Day focuses on preservation New landmark, recognition programs outlined during Downers Grove Historical Society’s annual event By jonathan samples Bugle Staff

When the Downers Grove Historical Society revived Founders Day five years ago, it did so with the goal of celebrating the village’s unique history and highlighting the importance of preservation.

Preservation took on an even greater role this year.

Following a villagewide debate over the now-demolished Edwards House, the village of Downers Grove made significant changes to its historic preservation ordinance and historic landmark program.

“Now with the change in the preservation ordinance in Downers Grove, homes can qualify if they’re 50 years or older,” historical society President Tom Casey said.

In addition to staples such as the Downers Grove Bicycle Club’s historic bike ride and the Windy City Walkers’ self-guided walking tour, Founders Day 2016 also included a presentation designed to inform residents about the village’s updated landmarking requirements.

Stan Popovich, director of community development for the village, gave an overview of the new historic preservation ordinance during a May 7 event at the Downers Grove Public Library.

Popovich outlined several changes to the ordinance and landmark program, which he described as “easier than ever.”

“The improvements to the program are that the program is now free, we’ve simplified the application requirements, and we’ve reduced the regulatory requirements,” Popovich said.

In order for a home to be designated a landmark by the village, it must meet several characteristics.

First, the home must either be at least 50 years old or be “exceptionally significant.” For example, Popovich said the latter characteristic could apply to homes that are less than 50 years

old but designed by a historic architect or have some other historical significance.

If a home has one of these “A” characteristics, it must also check off at least one requirement in a second list of “B” criteria. These criteria include having significant value to the community, being previously owned by significant figure, featuring historic architectural characteristics, or being listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

“So to qualify, you have to qualify as A and one of the characteristics under B,” Popovich added.

In addition to the historic preservation ordinance, a new program offered by the Downers Grove Museum and the Downers Grove Historical Society also gives homeowners a way to see that their home or property is recognized.

Downers Grove Museum Curator Sarah Konzen said the Downers Grove Historic Home program was created as a way for homeowners to research their own property and seek an honorary recognition of its historical significance.

This recognition, which is separate from the village’s landmark program, looks to preserve the the history and integrity of homes, as well as educate the community about research and preservation.

“The research required is intense because we want to have the most accurate years,” Kozen told an audience at the Downers Grove Library. “Your hard-earned research will also be placed in the museum’s research library as permanent information that will be accessible to researchers who come to the museum to learn about certain homes, streets, families and or architectural styles that are present in Downers Grove.”

Homeowners who complete the historic home application and meet the program’s requirements would be eligible for the recognition and have the option to purchase a plaque denoting their home’s historical significance.

“What’s nice to with our program and our packet – once you complete that research and get recognized by both the historical society and the museum – your same research can also go towards the village’s landmark program,” Konzen said.

Popovich noted several similarities and differences between the two programs. While both are intended to preserve historic homes, he said that the village’s historic landmark program affords protection for historic structures and is primarily concerned with the physical traits of buildings, such as their architectural design or style.

“In order to apply for the village’s program, there’s not as much detailed research about the levels of ownership,” Popovich added.

Another difference between the two programs is the limits they place on making alterations to the home. The museum and historical society’s program does not place any limits on making changes to recognized homes.

However, the village’s historic landmark program separates different types of home improvements into three levels of review: no review, administrative review, and review by the village’s

Work that does not require a review includes interior remodeling, routine maintenance and cleaning, landscaping or work performed on secondary or rear facades.

Administrative review is necessary for minor exterior modifications such as in-kind replacement of doors and windows or the constricting a porch. Review by the village’s architectural design and review board is necessary for major

exterior modifications, such as demolition building additions or attached garages, or changing the roof height or pitch.

Red, White & Bar-B-Q celebrates 10th anniversary This year’s event will begin May 27 and end May 29 The Westmont Lions Club will be celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the Red, White & Bar-B-Q festival in 2016.

Each year, the RWBBQ is held at Ty Warner Park in Westmont over Memorial Day Weekend.

This year’s event will begin May 27 and end May 29.

“This is going to be a very special year,” said Chris Svitak,

event coordinator and Lions Club member. “We’re planning some new activities to celebrate this special occasion.”

The RWBBQ offers $16,000 in prize money making it the largest Kansas City Barbeque Society Bar-B-Q competition in Illinois and one of the biggest in the Midwest.

The event includes both professional and amateur competitions.

Along with the competition, there will be an all-ages carnival, craft vendors and various BarB-Q vendors.

“We have a lot of Bar-B-Q

vendors to choose from this year,” said Larry Babyar, RWBBQ committee volunteer. “They will offer bar-b-q sample sizes at reasonable prices all the way up to full slabs of ribs.”

The festival will feature several local bands, including The Flat Cats with Jon Kostal from Uncle Jon’s music.

“We always enjoy playing for Westmont,” said Kostal, who performs at various community events throughout the year, including the Westmont Cruisin’ Nights and Street Fair, Taste of Westmont and Westmont Holly Days.

2016 DuPage River Sweep set for May 21 Downers Grove, Westmont and Woodridge are among the more than 20 communities taking part in the Conservation Foundation’s 2016 DuPage River Sweep.

The annual cleanup and restoration event is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

The purpose of the river sweep is to encourage volunteers to help “sweep our rivers clean” by picking up debris in and along the local waterways, and restoring nearby land back to its natural state.

This year’s river sweep is scheduled to take place 9 a.m. to noon May 21.

Last year, more than 6 tons of trash was collected and a record 97 miles of shoreline swept. Since starting in 1991, more than 10,800 volunteers have removed nearly 3,252 tons of garbage from DuPage County streams.

Village names Downer Grove Park District ‘Green Business’ The Downers Grove Park District announced that it was accepted into the village of Downers Grove Green Business Program last month.

The program is open to every village business, which must demonstrate “substantial efforts to become environmentally sustainable.”

In order to be awarded the Green Business distinction, the park district had to demonstrate it has a recycling service and significant green practices within four of the following categories: waste reduction and recycling, water conservation and stormwater pollution prevention, energy conservation, transportation, public education and awareness, and innovation.

The Southeast Association for Special Parks And Recreation will host its 16th annual Walk and Roll-A-Thon fundraiser May 22.

The event will take place at Ebersold Park in Downers Grove from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Participants will collect pledges for each lap completed around the half-mile course at Ebersold Park, located at the corner of 59th and Main streets in Downers Grove.

This all-ages event welcomes walkers, runners, wheelchairs, rollerblades, strollers and leashed dogs. Refreshments will be served, and all participants receive a T-shirt. Registration is required by May 16.

Proceeds from the Walk and Roll-A-Thon will go toward the purchase of a vehicle used for SEASPAR’s recreational programs and services for individuals with disabilities served by the park districts of Clarendon Hills, Darien, Downers Grove, La Grange, La Grange Park, Lemont, Lisle, Westmont and Woodridge, and the villages of Brookfield, Indian Head Park and Western Springs. I-55 Managed Lane Project public meeting set for May 17 The Illinois Department of Transportation is inviting the community and stakeholders to attend a public meeting concerning the proposed improvement of Interstate 55, between Interstate 355 and Interstate 90/94.

The scope of this work consists of the addition of one managed lane in each direction within the existing median of I-55, drainage improvements and noise walls. The existing travel lanes on I-55 will remain free, but the new managed lane is proposed to be tolled as an Express Toll Lane.

A public meeting is scheduled to take place from 4-7 p.m. May 17 at the Holiday Inn Countryside Conference Center, 6201 Joliet Road, Countryside. The purpose of the meeting will be to present the environmental assessment, the recommended preferred alternative and obtain public input.

Two students from Downers Grove South High School were among the top finishers in the 2016 Congressional Art Competition.

Congressman Bill Foster announced last week the 11th Congressional District winners.

Katie Turyna of Downers Grove South High School won third place for her submission “Desolation.”

The fourth place winner was selected in a Facebook competition where people were able to vote for their favorite submission.

The winner of the Facebook vote was “The Future,” submitted

by Judson Mitchell III, of Downers Grove South High School.

“I am really impressed by the skill and creativity displayed by the students who took part in this year’s competition,” Foster said.

First place winner Carlos Flores, of West Aurora High School, will receive complimentary airfare to

Washington, D.C. to see his work, “Departure,” displayed in the Capitol. The pieces were reviewed by a panel of local judges and displayed at Foster’s Joliet District Office.

Kira Donnelly, of Neuqua Valley High School, won the second place award for her submission “Imagine.”

Employees honored for distinguished service Education Foundation honored 32 DSA nominees during May 2 ceremony The Education Foundation of Downers Grove District 58 honored District 58 employees who exceeded expectations and served as inspirations to their community during its annual Distinguished Service Awards ceremony.

This year’s Distinguished Service Awards ceremony, held May 2 at Ashyana Banquets, recognized 32 District employees, who were each nominated by a parent, student or colleague.

The ceremony gave each nominator the opportunity to share a few words about what makes their nominee special and deserving of the award.

“These staff members represent all 13 District 58 schools and

the administrative office. They hold a variety of jobs and responsibilities,” said Marc Hausmann, event emcee and past foundation president. “Yet, all of our nominees share one common value: a solid dedication to the District 58 community.“ The event concluded with the announcement of this year’s Distinguished Service Award winners. The 2016 DSA winner in the Staff Category was Nancy Mueller, instructional aide at El Sierra. She was nominated by an El Sierra sixth grader, Nathan.

Mueller has worked with a student in Nathan’s class since they were in kindergarten. According to Nathan’s essay, she not only has helped her assigned student, but

the entire classroom as well.

The DSA Selection Committee spent considerable time reviewing the nominations for the Teacher Category. After much deliberation, the committee made an unprecedented, but completely merited, decision to recognize two teachers for this year’s DSA winner in the Teacher Category.

The 2016 DSA winners in the Teacher Category were Gail Pistello and Kit Hamilton. Pistello is a physical education teacher at Herrick and was nominated by her colleague Megan Winthrop.

Winthrop’s nomination essay shared insights into Pistello’s incredible work ethic, dedication and service-oriented nature.

Westmont police plan June auction, open house Auction to be held June 4 at police department The Westmont Police Department will host an open house and auction off unclaimed

property next month.

“At least once a year, we like to invite the community to visit

their police department and take a small tour of the facility,” Police Chief Tom Mulhearn said. “Along with the open house, we will have a public auction of unclaimed property. We invite the entire community to come out and participate.”

The auction will begin at 9 a.m.

June 4 at the police department, 500 N. Cass Ave. Pre-auction inspection will be at 8:45 a.m. The auction will take place at the rear of the police facility, and guests are asked to park in the Westmont Library parking lot, 428 N. Cass, or the DuPage County Health Facility parking lot, located just south of the library.

Items to be auctioned include

bicycles, tools, DVDs/games, and gold jewelry with a total melt value in excess of $1,600, among other items. All items are sold “as is” and returns will not be accepted.

Participants may pay for their purchase in cash or check if they are a local resident. Credit card purchases are not accepted.

I recently read the book “Great With Money” by Melissa Burke and Ellen Rogin. With the goal of the book being to help readers create a prosperous mindset and a confident approach to money, you might expect it to focus on how to earn more and spend less. Well, it may surprise you to know that “clear your clutter” is the first step to prosperity described by the authors. Yup, clearing the clutter in your life is the first step toward prosperity.

Even without the benefit of seeing disorganized homes and offices on the level that I do, these authors wisely recognize that being surrounded by clutter can block you from achieving more in your life – your piles of paper and other stuff represent unfinished tasks and postponed decisions that can weigh you down. The clutter not only physically blocks you from accomplishing things, but the mental clutter it creates can

prevent you from moving forward in your life. You’re too busy focusing on what you haven’t accomplished to be able to think about creating new accomplishments.

Sure, great achievers like Albert Einstein were famously buried in clutter.

However,I’mguessingthatbecauseyou’re reading a column about organization, you sense that being better organized would help you accomplish more. As Swiss philosopher Henri Frédéric Amiel stated, “Order is light, peace, inner freedom, self-determination: it is power.

To conceive order, to return to order, to realize order in oneself, around oneself, by means of oneself, is well-being.”

Not only does clearing clutter and creating order create a physical and mental path towards prosperity, it can actually directly generate prosperity.

Soccer pairings have been released and in Class 3A Downers South is the No. 3 seed in the Hinsdale Central Sectional, while Downers North (10-4-1) is the No. 4 seed.

Downers North will open play at 5 p.m. May 17 against No. 14 Curie at the Glenbard East Regional. A win puts the Trojans in the regional final at 5:30 p.m. May 20 against the winner of No. 5 Glenbard East and No. 12 Leyden.

“I thought we were seeded fairly with the four seed in our sectional,” North coach Bob Calder said. “We lost 1-0 to all three of the teams ahead of us, and we beat Glenbard East (the No. 5 seed) 3-0.”

The Trojans have used a stifling defense en route to the high seed.

“Our key to success has been team defense,” Calder said. “The entire team works as a unit defensively to turn the other team over and create scoring chances for ourselves. We have only allowed four goals total this season.”

finals in recent years, the goal this year is to finish the deal and bring home a regional title.

“I do not want to limit the scope or aspirations for our team this season in the playoffs, but it would be awesome to win a regional championship as we have lost in the regional championship each of the past two seasons,” Calder said. “To make a playoff run we will have to continue playing solid team defense and winning the battles in the boxes.”

The Mustangs open play at home at 4:30 p.m. May 17 against No. 15 Proviso West. A win puts them in their own regional final at 5 p.m.

Softball wins its fifth NACC title in six years Entering the tournament as the No. 3 seed, the Benedictine University softball team won six games over the last three days to win their fifth Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Championship in the last six years.

The Eagles defeated Aurora University twice to become the NACC champions.

“I am beyond excited for this team,” said head coach Kate Heidkamp. “We have had our ups and downs all season but every girl on this team stepped up this weekend and played their hearts out and left everything on the

field. I couldn’t be prouder.”

The Eagles had a long road ahead of them as they entered championship Saturday with a loss under their belt. Benedictine first took on No. 2 Concordia University-Wisconsin, who the Eagles lost to on Thursday afternoon.

Benedictine scored three runs in the third inning that included a Shannon Fritsche two-RBI double. Kailee Cable homered in the fifth to secure the 4-2 win and eliminate CUW from the tournament.

Lukas Elisa finished third in the all-around to qualify for state with a 50.55 mark. He also qualified for state in the parallel bars (8.7, 1st), vault (8.9, 4th) and floor (9.05, 3rd).

Keith VanSaten was fourth in the still rings (8.5) and August Strauch was second in the high bar (7.85) to qualify for state.

Executor needs competency and integrity

Just remember to use some common sense, too, when choosing an executor

Dear Dave, I’ve always heard that you shouldn’t ask a family member to be the executor of your will. What are your feelings about this?

Joyce Dear Joyce, I don’t necessarily agree with this line of thinking. In my mind, a family member who is competent and has integrity can definitely be the executor. “Executor” just means they execute, thus the name. They’re going to execute the wishes of the will. If the family member has the business acumen and trustworthiness to execute the wishes and directives in a will, then that’s perfectly fine.

Just remember to use some common sense, too, when choosing an executor. If you have an extremely complicated estate, say 80 pieces of real estate with investments and everything, you probably don’t want your 22-year-old niece, nephew or grandchild who just graduated college in charge of things. I would advise choosing someone with a little more life experience, and maybe some success in the real world.

The people who say family shouldn’t do this are the same ones who say you shouldn’t have family in your business. You can have family in both. You just have to have good boundaries, clear roles, and honest, mature people.

Make sure you give clear instructions and explanations for your decisions, too. Sit down with your family, explain who the executor’s going to be, and why, along with what the will says. It’s also not a bad idea to have an initial reading of the will while you’re still alive. This communicates your wishes personally and takes some of the pressure off of the executor.

My fiancé is getting onboard with your advice, and he’s currently in the process of paying down his student loan. Should I put my emergency fund money, minus $1,000, toward his student loan debt?

Elizabeth Dear Elizabeth, Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! I’m really proud of you guys, too, for your mature behavior where money is concerned.

First, don’t pay anything of his until after the wedding and you two are home from your honeymoon.

At that point, “mine” and “his” becomes “ours,” and you can realign your money situation to reflect your total money makeover as a couple. Make sure that “we” have an emergency fund of at least $1,000 in the bank at that point.

Then, if you like, you can throw the rest of what you previously had in your emergency fund at the debt.

You can both also pile up cash between now and the big day, so that after you two are official you’ll have even more cash on hand. Who knows, you might be able to knock out that student loan completely and begin your life together debtfree. That would be awesome!

Downers Grove chorus group celebrates decade May 2007 saw Village Voices appear in its debut concert Village Voices will recognize its 10th anniversary with a celebratory choral concert on Sunday, May 15 at 3 p.m. The concert will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 5211 Carpenter St., Downers Grove.

Admission is free, and the general public is invited.

May 2007 saw Village Voices appear in its debut concert. The past 10 years have seen the chorus grow in size and popularity.

Village Voices grew from 27 to 33 members, currently hailing from 14 different communities. In fact, 17 of its current singers have been with the group since its beginning, as have director Marilyn Wilgocki and accompanist Sarah Flanagan.

The group rehearses the first and third Monday evenings of each month at Immanuel Lutheran Church, where they also hold their annual spring concerts. They perform a wide variety of choral music, everything from jazz to patriotic, show tunes to pop, and folk tunes to spirituals.

When Village Voices was getting ready for their inaugural concert, founder and director Marilyn Wilgocki stated that goal of the group is twofold – rehearse well, learning music together and have lots of fun.

“All singers have had prior choral experience in school, church or community choirs,” Wilgocki said.

“I started the group November 2006, when several musician friends of mine asked about such a group.
