The event will take place at Ebersold Park in Downers Grove from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Participants collect pledges for each lap completed around the half-mile course at Ebersold Park, at the corner of 59th and Main Streets in Downers Grove.

This all-ages event welcomes walkers, runners, wheelchairs, rollerblades, strollers, and leashed dogs.

D.99 invites discussion of facilities planning Process of gauging community feedback began in 2011

Community High School District 99 officials sought input April 19 and April 20 from attendees gathering for a set of public meeting about facility needs.

“We’re at a point right now where our schools are big enough to contain our student body, which looks like it will be right around 5,000 students for the next 15 or so years,” said superintendent Dr. Hank Thiele. “What we don’t have are current modern facilities that reflect the learning and the activities that people are doing in the world of work. [It] can’t occur here very easily in the spaces as they are built now. They’re built for a more outdated mode of learning.”

The process of gauging community feedback began in 2011, at which time the Board of Education started the strategic planning process. Since that time, school officials have surveyed the set up

of educational institutions in surrounding communities.

Proposed plans for the two buildings include the introduction of learning commons, reconfiguration of library space and outdoor renovations. Specific changes at Downers Grove North could also include modifications to the gymnasium, while the auditorium serves as a point of focus at Downers Grove South.

Downers Grove South principal Ed Schwartz said the district does the best it can to serve the needs of its students every day, but the reality is education changes.

“I ask you for a just a few seconds think about the classrooms you sat in,” he said of D99 parents. “I know what mine looked like. Most were in rows. I was the only one accountable for my learning. I was only one that prepared. Usually, I demonstrated my learning by filling out some piece of paper with a pencil.”

That’s not the way it is anymore.

“You see it with your kids at home [in] the way if you have kids

they need to meet up at places, and they work together,” Schwartz said.

“They’ll go to Starbucks or Panera [Bread] or wherever they can find to work together. That’s just how society and life has changed.”

The District wants to provide students with better spaces to learn and collaborate in.

Addison Trail and Oswego East high schools, for example, have constructed learning commons into their schools.

Roughly $2 million a year is currently spent to meet maintenance facility needs. The District typically uses its operating fund to take care of building projects.

“Funding for this project, we already spent quite a bit money out of the operating funds for maintenance of our buildings,” said Mark Staehlin, controller for District 99.

Staehlin noted that District 99 staff and officials strive to work within their means and said they’re cognizant of impact of improvement projects on taxpayers.

Between 1997 and 2001, the community issued a bond issuance to do upgrades across the school district.

“These will fall off in 2019,” Staehlin said.

The district’s proposed plans for renovations could be met by two spending solutions, one in which relies on maintaining the current level of funding and another that requires taxpayers to pay an added amount of less than $100 each year.

At a minimum, the project could cost close to $95 million, minus modifications to the gymnasium at Downers Grove North and the auditorium at Downers Grove South, while the all-inclusive plan amounts to an estimated $126 million.

To date, no renovation proposals have been approved.

A number of people were in attendance to express their views and ask questions during the public meetings.

“I like the idea of the instructional commons,” said Sue Gage, a Downers Grove South parent. “I’ve seen it in other schools.”

Gage said she thinks the renovations plans will be worthwhile projects to explore.

“It’ll build more of a community, a sense of community within the school,” she said. “It does seem like it’s very sectioned off a lot in the school, just the way the design and layout [is.]”

The District is looking to form a citizens’ task force to gain further input with the goal of working toward a solution to address the District’s facilities maintenance needs.

In 2018, school officials will look to consider what options to take with regard to funding upgrades.

Government Proposes Cutting Support for Meals on Wheels Federal funding for meals on wheels is on the chopping block. The Trump administration budget blueprint released in March calls for the elimination of two federal block grants: That’s money the federal government gives the states for social welfare programs, and those programs include homedelivered meals and meals served in senior centers.

Most of the nation’s 5,000 meal programs also rely on money from the Older Americans Act passed in 1965 to fund about 35 percent of the cost of the meals they serve. Those funds are also in jeopardy. The budget blueprint calls for an 18 percent cut to the budget of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which administers the Act, and programs are bracing for more cuts.

Paul Kraintz who heads the senior nutrition program at Meals on Wheels in Martinez, California, says while his program would lose about $67,000 it now gets from one of the block grants, he’s really worried about the potential budget cut at HHS. “If they take 18 percent of that, it’s going to be big.”

Why the attack on meals delivered to the elderly, many of whom are homebound, ill, and unable to cook or shop?

At his March news conference, budget director Mick Mulvaney told reporters, “Meals on Wheels sounds great,” but to take that federal money and give it to the states, and say, ‘Look we want to give you money for programs that don’t work’ – I can’t defend that anymore.” He claimed the program was “just not showing any results.”

Mulvaney didn’t say what he meant by results. He didn’t have to. His comments were aimed at creating doubt in the minds of legislators who might look favorably on cutting the Health and Human Services funds for use elsewhere in the federal budget. The potential impact on hungry elders was

not a high priority. It didn’t matter that thousands of seniors on waiting lists for food in communities across the country are, in effect, stuck in a bread line.

Several academic studies examining meals on wheels programs have challenged comments like Mulvaney’s regarding the program’s effectiveness. A recent randomized controlled study funded by the AARP Foundation showed significant differences among seniors on waiting lists, those receiving home-delivered meals, and those getting deliveries of frozen foods. Seniors with home-delivered meals reported the greatest improvement in health and quality of life.

In 2013 Brown University researchers found that meals delivered to seniors allowed them to stay in their homes rather than going to a nursing home, and that resulted in a net savings to Medicaid, which pays for about half of all nursing home stays.

Nursing home funding from Medicaid may be in trouble, too, if Congress cuts more than $800 billion out of Medicaid over the next 10 years, which has been proposed. States could have fewer dollars to channel into nursing home care. The picture is bleak for senior services. Thirty-eight states also use Medicaid dollars for home-delivered meals.

None of this makes much sense.

cades. Erika Kelly, a government affairs officer for Meals on Wheels America, an umbrella organization for local programs, told me its members are already serving 23 million fewer meals than in 2005, a decline that has resulted in an increase in hunger.

Federal funding has not kept pace with the need. Money from state and local governments and private philanthropy hasn’t been able to provide the rest of the money to feed everyone who needs a meal. “The gap has grown so much there’s no way private philanthropy will fill it,” says Ellie Hollander who heads Meals on Wheels America.

Philanthropy works only in places where there are lots of wealthy individuals and corporations to tap. In Dallas, donors who can write checks for $1 million or $2 million have helped whittle the waiting list from about 3,000 a year ago to 2,000 today.

What do those still on the lists do?

“People have come to us who are literally starving, or they ask family to bring stuff from the food bank. It’s whatever they can do to get food into their homes,” says Katherine Krause, president of VNA Texas, the agency that delivers the meals.

Programs like those in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, aren’t as lucky. There aren’t many rich donors or big companies. “It’s worse now than it ever has been for funding,” says Director Betty Bradshaw.

In 1963 President John F. Kennedy, quoting the historian Arnold Toynbee noted in a special message to Congress, “a society’s quality and durability can best be measured ‘by the respect and care given its elderly citizens.’”

That respect and care may be threatened if government support to feed the elderly is cut.

Gesior’s impact felt this season for Benet

Katie Gesior was heading into seventh grade when Benet soccer coach Gerard Oconer first saw her play.

Neither foresaw how good Gesior would become in the ensuing six years.

“I remember seeing her at our camp going into seventh grade and she’s been at our camp every single summer since, actually worked the last one,” Oconer said. “When she came in as a seventh grader, she was a good player but I didn’t know if she was going to be that great of a player.

“She’s just elevated her game every single year. She carries us when we really need it. She is the one person that you can always count on.”

Indeed, Gesior is the one player insiders think of when speaking of the Redwings.

The only four-year varsity player on the current roster, the senior midfielder has evolved into the team’s most dangerous offensive player and a consummate leader.

“Essentially she is Benet soccer,” Oconer said. “She is the kind of player that you hope to mold your younger players after because every single year she’s found a way to improve her game in some aspect.”

Indeed, Gesior’s transformation has been startling.

A defensive-minded player at the beginning of her high school career, Gesior has 33 goals and 23 assists in her career, including 10 goals and five assists this season.

“Katie is definitely the glue to our team,” said fellow co-captain Betsy Keefe. “She brings us all together and she knows exactly

what to say when we need it.

“On the field, she’s what we need in the center leading us.

She’s definitely an important part of the team and I don’t know what they’re going to do next year. Luckily I don’t have to play without her.”

Gesior has made the greatest impact this season.

The Redwings (11-6) returned 10 starters but are still a relatively young team, with only four seniors.

With age has come increased confidence, both in herself and her teammates.

“I have more confidence on the ball,” Gesior said. “I used to play defensive and my sole role was to win tackles and get it out, but now I feel I’m more in control of the game.

“I can keep it at my feet and I’m not afraid to take anyone on anymore. I’m comfortable going to goal and not just playing it off.”

Gesior enjoyed a breakout season in 2016, when she scored a team-leading 11 goals and earned All-Sectional honors after leading the Redwings to the East Suburban Catholic Conference championship.

Most of those goals came on free kicks and penalty kicks.

Gesior developed a reputation as one of the most dangerous players on restarts.

“I think my team has confidence in me, so it doesn’t worry me that, “oh, I have to finish it, there’s so much pressure,” Gesior said. “So then I can just calmly step up to the ball.

“I know that I’ve done it before and I have confidence to put it in. My team is not going to yell at me and kill me for it if I don’t put it in and I know that they’ll come out strong.”

Gesior still takes most of

Benet’s free kicks, but she is much more than a dead ball diva.

She proved that by scoring twice in the run of play against powerful St. Charles East in the season opener.

The Saints, who are currently 8-1-3, came back to win that game 3-2, but Gesior had found a new level of confidence.

She has since scored two game-winning goals and assisted on two others.

That has the Redwings, who are in the Nazareth Sectional, the toughest Class 2A field in the state, hoping for great things in the postseason.

They won a sectional title in 2012, the last time they played in Class 2A. “Every year has been a different team,” Gesior said. “I wouldn’t say any team has been similar at all with all the different players graduating, but I would say we’ve always had a solid team.

“I’ve always had confidence that we can win and have a deep run in the playoffs. It’s been a good four years.”

Gesior was recruited to play college soccer but has elected to play only club soccer at St. Louis University, so the upcoming playoffs will be the end of an era, both for Gesior and the Redwings.

“I was kind of looking but I wanted (college) to be more of a calm experience because throughout my whole 18 years it has been soccer, soccer, soccer,” Gesior said. “So I wanted to have academics be more of the focus and not have soccer dominate my life.

“It’s very sad to be leaving this atmosphere because all the girls try really hard and everyone is very skilled, so it will be very different next year.”

and you use $10,000 of it, you’ll be fine. But anything that leaves you with less than three or four months of expenses stashed away would worry me. That’s the way you’ve got to look at it. Just use a little common sense with the numbers. I’d love for you to put down 20 percent because you’d avoid private mortgage insurance (PMI), which runs about $75 a month per $100,000 borrowed. It costs you a lot of money if you don’t put down 20 percent. You should try to do that if possible, but don’t be irresponsible with your emergency fund in the process.
