State passes stopgap for higher ed. funding $600M allocated for MAP, state schools By jonathan samples Bugle Staff

State lawmakers have reached an agreement on a $600 million stopgap measure to fund public universities and community colleges throughout the state.

Gov. Bruce Rauner signed Senate Bill 2059 into law Monday – three days after the bipartisan legislation passed both the House and Senate.

The bill allocates $356 million to nine public universities and $74 million to the state’s 48 community colleges. Additionally, SB 2059 provides $169 million for Monetary Award Program grants.

“This unprecedented agreement among all four legislative caucuses and the governor is a big step toward ensuring Illinois higher education continues uninterrupted, benefiting students, their families, employees of public and private colleges and universities, college towns, and ultimately the future of our state,” Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, said in a statement.

The office of the governor applauded the legislation, as well.

Press Secretary Catherine Kelly said the bipartisan agreement shows that both chambers were able to put aside political differences in order to offer emergency assistance to universities and community colleges, as well as low-income college students.

State Comptroller Leslie Munger said the $600 million in funding will come from the state’s Education Assistance Fund.

“Those dollars will allow us to immediately pay student MAP grants and work closely with our universities and community colleges to ensure they have the resources they need to avoid further cuts and closings,” she said in a statement. “We will continue disbursing funds as they become available, with final payments being made in July.”

Munger said she has directed her staff to begin processing payments immediately, adding that top priority would be given to students and institutions most in need.

State Sen. Jennifer BertinoTarrant, D-Shorewood, said she is happy and relieved that lawmakers approved higher education funding, but added that more work still needs to be done.

“I want to see a long-term solution that ensures students in my district don’t have to live in fear of their education being threatened by the dysfunction in Springfield,” she said. “It’s also imperative that human services agencies get the funding they need to keep their doors open.”

More than 30 southwest suburban fire departments were called on Thursday to help contain a massive fire at a Woodridge furniture warehouse.

Remarkably, no one was injured in the blaze, which quickly consumed a 700,000-square-foot

building at 2500 Internationale Parkway. Smoke from the fire could be seen as far away as Plainfield.

“Fire fighters from about 35 departments from the surrounding areas responded to help contain the fire,” said Lemont Fire Protection District Chief George Rimbo, whose district oversaw the effort. “At one point, we had five aerial streams going to keep the fire from spreading to other buildings.”

Officials said the district received an automatic fire alarm notification from the RoomPlace furniture warehouse at approximately 5 p.m. April 21.

The blaze quickly escalated to

a four-alarm fire, prompting fire officials to initiate a mutual aid call to neighboring fire departments.

“All the employees were safely out of the building when we arrived on scene,” Rimbo added.

“No firefighters were injured during the incident.”

However, nearby businesses were forced to evacuate due to safety concerns.

Crews managed to extinguish a majority of the fire that evening, but Rimbo said several companies remained on scene overnight to ensure the fire was contained.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

Young adult fellowship raises $5,650 for Night Ministry in Chicago First Congregational United Church of Christ recently raised more than $5,000 during a trivia night fundraiser to support the Night Ministry in Chicago.

On April 17, the church presented a check for $5,650 to Megan Hoxhalli, congregational and community relationship coordinator for The Night Ministry. More than 150 people attended the sold-out March 5 trivia night, which also included raffle baskets, a 50/50 raffle, a gift card chance, food, and beer or wine for purchase.

The trivia night event was

organized and hosted by the Community of Young Adults – a church fellowship and service ministry comprised of those aged 18 to 35.

The game night was created as a way to celebrate First Congregational UCC’s 150th anniversary and its history of mission giving.

The Night Ministry, which offers housing and healthcare to members of the Chicago community struggling with poverty or homelessness, is a regular mission site for church members, specifically the

Community of Young Adults.

First Congregational will continue its 150th anniversary celebration throughout 2016 with a Confirmation Reunion May 15, a Guided Path Concert in Fishel Park June 12 and a weekend of service Aug. 26-28.

The festivities culminate with an Anniversary Party Sept.

17 and the 150th anniversary worship service at 9:30 a.m.

Giving DuPage hosts fifth annual Human Race 5k, fitness walk to benefit local nonprofits

In support of 73 local charities, Giving DuPage will host the fifth annual “Human Race” Saturday The 5k run and 2-mile fitness walk is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.

April 30 at The Esplanade at Locust Point in Downers Grove.

“Giving DuPage is incredibly proud to reach our five-year anniversary with the Human Race,” said Paul Feith, Giving DuPage

Board President. “Over the years, we’ve raised funds for over 80 local nonprofits and given these organizations some wonderful exposure about their cause and programs.”

The Human Race is a community 5K fundraiser event bringing people together in support of charities serving DuPage County. Walkers and runners choose a charity to receive the donation from their race registration fee, with the option to raise additional funds for their favorite organization. In four years, the race has raised more than $255,545 for local charities and has drawn 5,277 race participants.

“The Human Race is a unique fundraising opportunity for local charities that serve the region,” said DuPage County Board member Bob Larsen. “Through events like this, Giving DuPage is able to not only help these wonderful organizations raise the funds they need, but it helps showcase for the generous citizens of DuPage the many volunteer opportunities that are out there.”

Participating charity organizations include: CASA of DuPage, Catholic Charities – Diocese of Joliet, Downers Grove Choral Society, DuPage Habitat for Humanity, DuPage Veterans Foundation, Friends of DuPage County Animal Care & Control Foundation, Hope’s Front Door, Indian Boundary YMCA, Literacy DuPage, Prairie State Legal Services, Serenity House Counseling Services Inc., and West Suburban Community Pantry, among others.

Family, friends of late Downers Grove North runner look to shed light on mental illness By jonathan samples Bugle Staff

A standout high school runner and All-State athlete, Ben Silver graduated from Downers Grove North High School in 2011 with high hopes for his athletic and academic future.

He received a scholarship to Miami University of Ohio, where he looked to continue his success as a cross country and track and field runner.

“Ben was a great runner,” said Bill Bower, a family friend and former volunteer coach at North High.

“He was probably one of the best distance runners North has ever had.”

Silver, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia after his sophomore year of college, committed suicide last July after treatment failed to address an oftentimes misunderstood illness.

“One of the problems with mental illness is there’s a stigma attached to it,” Bower said. “For some reason, people don’t treat it like it’s an illness.”

In an effort to combat that stigma and help individuals with mental illness, Bower joined forces with Ben’s parents, Paul and Jaime Silver, to create a nonprofit organization tasked with doing just that.

Ben’s Memorial Mile will host an inaugural event of the same name June 11 to honor Silver’s memory and raise money for two mental health organizations: National Alliance on Mental Illness and the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation.

The fundraiser will feature an evening of mile-long walking and running events for adults and children of all experience levels. Ben’s Elite Mile will give experienced runners the option to compete against other runners of a similar ability, while an open mile and walking mile will open the fundraiser up to people of all ability levels. Additionally, the event will feature a themed costume mile,

kids’ half mile and little kids’ 100yard dash.

“The event came to be partly because the mile was Ben’s favorite race on the track,” Bower said.

“Hopefully, we can raise enough to support a couple of organizations that we think do some good.”

Ben’s Memorial Mile has already raised $2,125 of its $10,000 goal, according to the event’s GoFundMe page. Money raised through donations and from the event’s registration fees will fund the Ben’s Memorial Mile event in June, as well as education and research of mental illness, specifically schizophrenia.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, schizophrenia is a serious long-term illness that affects approximately 1 percent of Americans. Because schizophrenia is caused by a complex combination of genetic and environmental factors, diagnosing the disorder can be difficult.

Symptoms vary from person to person but typically include hallucinations, delusional beliefs, disorganized thinking, and speaking in a dull or emotionally disconnected way.

Bower said Silver had not been properly diagnosed with schizophrenia until about a year after he started showing symptoms, such as paranoia and withdrawing from his family and friends.

In Bower’s opinion, the negative stigma that goes along with this and other mental illnesses prevents a lot of people from receiving a timely diagnosis and proper treatment.

“Our world has to wake up and understand that mental illness is a real problem in our society,” Bower said. “The answer isn’t to ignore it, but that’s what everybody does.”

In fact, a new report by the National Academy of Sciences released April 20 found that stigma toward people with mental and substance-use disorders can have significantly adverse effects on

treatment and present barriers to a person’s full participation in society.

The report recommended that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services lead efforts among federal partners and stakeholders to design, implement and evaluate a new multifaceted national strategy to reduce these negative attitudes, beliefs and behaviors.

“We have to start to look for ways to resolve some of the issues and that’s what we’re trying to do,” said Bower. “We just want to make people aware and try to get people to understand that this is an illness and research should be funded to help cure some of the problems.”

That’s why Bower said he thinks the first, and most important, goal of Ben’s Memorial Mile is to raise awareness of mental illness. In addition to helping plan the event, the former coach has reached out to a number of cross country and track and field coaches from schools Silver would have ran against when he was attending North High. Currently, 14 have voiced their support and pledged to help promote the June 11 event to their schools and their teams.

“So far, the corporation’s been pretty good,” Bower said.

During his last race with North High’s track team, Silver ran his best race of the year. Despite battling injuries throughout the season, he earned All-State honors in the 3,200-meter, taking eighth place with a time of 9:18.91.

“I’m super-pumped,” Silver said after that race. “I was pretty aggressive and knew I just had to go after it.”

Now, his friends and family are hoping to match Silver’s intensity in their fight to help others diagnosed with a mental illness.

Those of us who grew up in small rural communities in the 1950s and 60s expected to have longer life spans than our parents.

The trends were in our favor. White women born in 1900 could expect to live, on average, just shy of 49 years; white men 46.6 years. Those were our grandparents and our neighbors.

By 1950, life expectancy had climbed to 72 years for white women born that year and 66.5 for white men. By 2000, life expectancy was still increasing, with female babies expected to live to nearly 80 and males to almost 75. America was on the rise, jobs were plentiful, antibiotics kept us from dying of strep throat, and polio vaccine kept us out of the iron lung. We thought things would only keep getting better.

So I was dismayed to read a story in the Washington Post in April that blew holes in those childhood expectations.

The Post found “white women have been dying prematurely at higher rates since the turn of this century, passing away in their 30s, 40s, and 50s in a slowmotion crisis driven by decaying health in small town-America.”

That “small town America” was where I grew up. I contrasted the Post’s findings to the claims made by all those politicians who have told us we have the best healthcare in the world and who point to gobs of money lavished on the National Institutes of Health to find new cures and to hospitals promoting their latest imaging machines. The Post found that since 2000, the health of all white women has declined, but the trend is most pronounced in rural areas. In 2000, for every 100,000 women in their late 40s living in rural areas, 228 died. Today it’s 296.

By TRuDy lIeBeRMAN Rural Health News Service If the U.S. really has the best healthcare, why are women dying in their prime, reversing the gains we’ve made since I was a kid? After all, mortality rates are a key measure of the health of a nation’s population.

Post reporters found, however, that those dismal stats probably have less to do with healthcare – which we like to define today as the latest and greatest technology and insurance coverage albeit with high deductibles – and more to do with what health experts call “the social determinants of health,” such basics as food, housing, employment, air quality and education.

Landmark studies examining the health of British civil servants who had access to insurance under Britain’s National Health Service have found over the years that those at the lowest job levels had worse health outcomes.

Some of those outcomes were related to things like work climate and social influences outside work like stress and job uncertainty.

In its analysis, the Post found that the benefits of health interventions that increase longevity things like taking drugs to lower cholesterol and the risk of heart disease, are being overwhelmed by increased opioid use, heavy drinking, smoking and obesity.

Some researchers have speculated that such destructive health behaviors may stem from people’s struggles to find jobs in small communities and the “dashed expectations” hypothesis. White people today are more pessimistic about their opportunities to advance in life than

It is rare that in any one game, both teams can come out of it feeling good about its performance.

That, however, was the case last week when Westmont defeated Lisle 1-0 in the opener of a two game, home and home series.

For the Lions, the win was a big one as they were able to grab a hard-fought win right when they needed it.

“We have had a lot of close games lately and it is nice to come out with a win,” said Lisle coach Trent Schalk. “It is nice to finally get on the right side of that and have some hope for close games. Our theory all along has been that if we keep having great at bats and keep sticking through it and it will turn our way.”

For Westmont, the loss looked to be a step in the right direction.

“If there ever was a good loss, this was it, because it shows the girls that we are capable of playing like this every game and being this team every game,” said Sue Zapinski. “This was, by far, our best competitive game as far as everyone working together. We just didn’t come out on top. We are a very young team and we started out rough, but we have been getting progressively better as they get more comfortable.”

The thing about momentum, however, while both teams can feel it has it one day, only one can come out of the series holding the cards.

It was Lisle who took advantage of the momentum in game two, winning 15-0 in five innings.

Both teams used different pitchers in the games as Lisle’s Anna Palicka and Melissa Ericson earned the wins. For Westmont, Kiera Aldridge was the tough luck loser in game one, striking out a game-high 11 batters.

“Anna has been doing a great job and she has pitched the majority of our innings,” Schalk said. “Erica Krause, our catcher has been doing a great job and logging a lot of hours back there. Then, we have just been getting performances from everyone on a consistent basis.

Everyone is contributing in their way. Some people may be hitting better than everyone, but everyone contributes and everyone is an asset to this team. This should be a good catapult to where we want to go. We just need to keep going in a good direction.”

For Westmont, win or lose, there are lessons to be learned this season with the amount of youth on the roster.

“We have one senior and a couple juniors and they have been good leaders for us,” Zapinski said.

“Lauren Verdera is a senior and two juniors in Kiera Aldridge and Rachel Chorney and they have been anchoring us all year. We really needed them to step up and lead by example and they have been doing that, especially Lauren. Every game people are learning. We are working hard. Our goal is to win regionals, so we are looking at getting better and better each week.”

Benet having strong season despite injury

When a team loses a 6-foot, 7-inch player before the season starts, one expects the expectations for that team to change drastically.

However, that hasn’t been the case for Benet. Despite losing the 6-7 Alex Yates, the Redwings still managed a 15-6 start to their season thanks to Yates’ brother, also 6-7, Chris Yates, to go along with others who have changed their positions and sophomores who have stepped up.

With both setters returning from a 6-2 rotation last year, the Redwings appeared set at the position. But due to the injury, Ben Mazza moved to the outside and Jackson Van Eekeren has been the lone setter.

“Last year we ran a 6-2 and me and Ben Mazza were both setters.

But things happen and we had an injury and Ben did a great

job moving to the outside,” Van Eekeren said. “It wasn’t too much of an adjustment for me because I was a full time setter for my club team.”

The duo of Chris Yates and Van Eekeren has been huge for Benet, especially when both are in the front row.

“When me and Chris are both in the front row, we love to run the middle in that rotation,” Jackson Van Eekeren said. “He is one of our biggest hitters, so I always love getting him the ball.”

“That is a great duo,” Benet coach Amy Van Eekeren said of Chris Yates and Jackson Van Eekeren. “When

we’re passing well, those guys can connect and get some quick kills all the time.”

While the Redwings may have needed time to adjust to the new lineup early in the season, they are happy with how they have played, especially of late.

“We’re doing really good this year,” Jackson Van Eekeren said. “We’ve improved since the beginning of the yearend are picking up steam and finding out stride.”

“I think at the beginning of the year we weren’t playing consistently,” Amy Van Eekeren said. “We set the tone coming into

conference and are playing better.

The goal is to be in system all the time. We want to continue to improve and play great volleyball.

By the end of the season the Redwings are hoping to find themselves right there with the other top teams in the difficult sectional.

“We set our goals before the season and we want to go far,” Yates said. “We know our sectional is tough but we know after going up against teams in our tournament that we can hang with them. We have big players and going forward we think we can compete with any team in our sectional.”

It revolves around a $3,000 student loan program, where the loan converts to a scholarship if I maintain a grade point average of 3.3 or higher. Tuition at this college costs about $34,000 a year, so I was wondering what you think about the idea.

7 students earn National Scholastic Art awards Gold medals awarded to 2 D. 99 students Seven students from Downers Grove North and South high schools have received national medals in the 2016 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition.

Of the 320,000 works of art and writing submitted, 2,400 were awarded medals at the national level, 100 of which went to Illinois students.

From Downers Grove South High School, Claire Pikul and Alessandra Lane received national medals.

Pikul earned two gold medals, both in the digital art category, while Lane received a silver medal in the photography category.

for a high school artist,” said fine arts department chairman Glenn Williams. “We are extremely proud of Claire and Alessandra and their mentor teacher, Michelle Lynn, for earning this recognition at a national level.”

“These pieces were selected from a national pool of student work

and are deserving of these awards,” Lynn said.

Receiving a national medal from the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards places student artists within the top 1 percent of all submissions from a national pool of artwork.

Student work will be in exhibition at Carnegie Hall in New York this summer.
