Seniors are often targeted by criminals. Though many criminals target seniors from afar via telephone or internet scams, criminals seek to enter seniors’ homes. The Bureau of Justice Statistics offers that, between 2003

and 2013, the ratio of property crime to violent crime was higher for the elderly and persons between the ages of 50 and 64 than it was for younger persons between the ages of 25 and 49.

Exercises to support stronger hips Surgery is not an inevitable side effect of aging. In fact, men and women over 50 can employ various preventive techniques to strengthen their bones and joints in the hopes of avoiding the surgical wing of their local hospitals. According to AARP, more than 370,000 men and women undergo hip replacement surgeries in the United States each year. Some may think such surgeries are a final solution to their hip pain, but that might not be the case, as AARP notes than one in 10 hip replacement recipients will need a second procedure for any number of reasons, including infection or mechanical failure.

A proactive approach that focuses on strengthening and protecting the hips can help aging men and women reduce their risk of one day needing hip replacement surgery. The following are a handful of exercises, courtesy of the AARP, that can help men and women strengthen their hips. » GOOD MORNING

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and keep your hands at your sides. With your

knees slightly bent and your back naturally arched, bend at your hips as if you’re bowing out of respect as far as you can go, or until your torso is almost parallel to the floor. Return to the starting position. During the exercise, keep your core braced and don’t bow your back. » HIP ABDUCTION

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart.

Loop a resistance band around both ankles, and then raise your right leg out to the side as far as you can. Hold in this position for a moment before slowly returning to the starting position. Switch legs and then repeat the exercise on the other side.

» HIP ADDUCTION

Loop one end of a resistance band low around a solid object, then stand to the left of that object before looping the other end of the band around your right ankle. Place your legs shoulder-width apart, and then pull in your right leg until your ankles touch.

Repeat with your left leg, this time moving to the right side of the object.

Downers Grove finds new Superintendent Kevin Russell intends to bring leadership, communication and trust to Downers Grove

Downers Grove District 58 has officially found its new leader and Superintendent in Dr. Kevin Russell.

Russell, a veteran educator with nearly 20 years experience as a teacher and administrator, will serve as Downers Grove Grade School District 58’s next superintendent of schools, effective July 1, 2019.

The District 58 Board of Education unanimously approved Russell’s five-year contract during a special meeting on Monday, April 1.

“I am beyond excited to lead Downers Grove Grade School District 58,” Russell said. “District 58 is a destination school district and it is an honor to serve the community.”

Dr. Russell presently serves as the superintendent of Chicago Ridge School District 127.5, a position he has held with distinction since 2014.

In this role, he successfully collaborated with all stakeholders to carry out a comprehensive five-

Previously, Dr. Russell held several leadership roles in Community Consolidated School District 181 in Clarendon Hills, including the assistant superintendent of learning and the director of curriculum, assessment and instruction.

He also served as the principal of Walker Elementary School and the assistant principal of Clarendon Hills Middle School, both in District 181.

Dr. Russell’s appointment to the District 58 superintendent role marks an intriguing return to his roots that he said he was ecstatic when he found out about the great news.

“When I learned I would be the next superintendent of District 58, I felt an enormous sense of pride,” Russell said. “Leading the district where I started my career as a teacher is truly special. Having my family in attendance at the Board meeting when I was approved is something I will never forget. Coming back home to lead is a dream come true.”

Dr. Russell earned his doctor of education degree and his administrative certificate in educational leadership from Aurora University.

He also earned a master of education degree in curriculum and instruction from National-Louis University, a bachelor degree in history from Northern Illinois University and completed a fellowship at the Illinois School for Advanced Leadership.

Dr. Russell currently lives in Lisle with his wife, Melissa, who is a middle school math teacher, and their seven children.

Dr. Russell will replace current District 58 Superintendent Dr. Kari Cremascoli, who will leave District 58 on June 30, 2019 to begin the superintendent position in Wilmette District 39.

With many ideas and new goals Russell wants to bring to the table, he said building relationships with the community is something he first wants to establish.

“As a new leader, I will make sure to take the time to listen and build relationships prior to making any changes,” Russell said.

“District 58 is a strong district with a great staff that works extremely hard for the students.”

The superintendent search also invited all stakeholders to share their vision for District 58’s next leader.

More than 930 stakeholders completed the superintendent survey, and several others participated in in-person focus groups.

This input helped the School Board’s search firm, BWP & Associates, create a leadership profile to identify candidates that best fit the District 58 community’s needs.

“The people of Downers Grove are getting a leader that values relationships, communication and trust,” Russell said.

“They are getting someone that is fully committed to work with stakeholders to make a difference in the lives of all the students and staff.”

In most budget billing scenarios, they add up your utility bill for the last 12 months and divide that total by twelve to determine a fixed billing amount for the next twelve months. It can make things so much easier when you’re first starting to live on a budget, and

Bond Set at $25K for Plainfield Man Accused of Aggravated DUI in I-355 Crash

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced today that bond has been set for a Plainfield man accused of causing a head-on crash while driving the wrong way on I-355 in Downers Grove that seriously injured a pregnant woman in an oncoming vehicle. Marco Alegria, 33 (d.o.b.

5/19/1985) appeared at a bond hearing this morning where Judge Brian Telander set bond at $25,000 with 10% to apply. The State requested a bond of $500,000 with 10% to apply.

It is alleged that while driving, Alegria crashed his car head-on into a northbound vehicle, causing severe injuries to the driver including a fractured leg, broken ankle and other injuries that not only will require surgery on her hip, but also caused doctors to induce labor due to her injuries. It is further alleged that Alegria’s BAC was .13.

Following the crash, Alegria and the victim of the crash were transported to the hospital for treatment of their injuries. The baby has been placed in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Alegria was arrested and taken into custody at this time.

The 21st-ranked Downers Grove North Trojans boys volleyball team is back for the 2019 season under coach Mark Wasik.

The Trojans (12-6, 1-1) are sitting on a three-game winning streak after two consecutive losses in the Downers Grove South Invite.

Losing 2-1 against West Aurora and then 2-0 against Lyons Township, Wasik said there was a lot of room for growth and improvement.

“This team shows a lot of potential but we score two or three points and then give up two or three points right away,” Wasik said. “At times, it’s self inflicted which is a reflection on maturity, skill level and experience.”

After the two consecutive losses, the Trojans put together three consecutive wins over Joliet Central, New Trier and Niles North while not losing one match in the victo-

ries.

At the start of the season, The Trojans got off to a hot start, winning four out of their first five games.

Following the hot start, the Trojans then lost three out of their next four games, but then got back on the winning track winning four consecutive games before the Downers Grove South Invite.

Their roster features six seniors, six juniors, three sophomores and no freshman.

Repetitive errors has cost his team from becoming “elite” Wasik said, but he thinks if his team can minimize them and not be too flashy at times, he believes they can compete with anyone in the state.

“We get streaky at times because we become to flashy where we look really good, and then we look really bad,” Wasik said. “It tends to be not just one error, but two or three errors which is the difference SEE STREAK PAGE 8

Benet responds after ‘wake up call’ loss to Joliet Catholic

Benet senior defender Mary Kate Hansen hates to lose more than she

loves to win.

So you can imagine her reaction after the Redwings lost 2-1 to Joliet Catholic in an East Suburban Catholic Conference game on April 8.

“You should have heard me after the game,” Hansen said. “It’s tough to lose, especially in conference.

“It just leaves a bitter taste in your mouth, but it definitely woke us

up.”

Indeed, the Redwings have not lost since and on Saturday they knocked off host Naperville Central 2-0 to advance to the Naperville Invitational quarterfinals for the first time. Benet (12-1) will play St. Charles East (12-3) on April 25 at Naperville North.

“This is one of our goals for the team at the beginning of the year because we knew we’ve never gotten out of our group before,” Benet coach Gerard Oconer said. “We knew that we had the kind of team this year that had the potential to do it.

“We just came ready to play today. It was probably the sharpest warm-up we’ve had all season.”

Benet’s defense has never been sharper. The back line of Hansen, Brooke Pullen and Woodridge residents Kate Flynn and Mary Kate Wilhelm and Brooke Pullen has posted nine shutouts and allowed only five goals, none in the four games since the loss to Joliet Catholic.

Naperville Central (7-6-1) was held without a shot – on goal or off.

“We’re really happy that our defense had a shutout today,” said Benet senior Mae Tully, who scored the Redwings’ second goal off an assist from Jaimee Cibulka. “Our goalie (Eva Frantzen) didn’t need to make any saves.

“We were really happy with how our defense held them and on offense we were finally working into STREAK FROM PAGE 7 from being a good team, to a great team.”

Wasik also said that leadership on the team has come from many different areas, including

the middle and back out and we’re excited with scoring two.”

Flynn had the game-winning goal. It came with 24:16 left in the first half when she deflected in a corner kick from Nicole Burns.

“She took a great corner and I was wide-open on the back post, so I just ran through the ball,” Flynn said. “It was right on the line.

“We’ve been working recently on coming out strong and fast right away, trying to score early. Because we knew if we got a goal in fairly early we would be able to take the game to them.”

While Oconer said the Redwings can’t afford to miss any chances against opponents like St. Charles East, the fact they are the only Class 2A team in the prestigious tournament, which includes 13 of the top 15 teams in the state, speaks volumes.

Benet opened tournament play last Wednesday by beating Oswego 2-0 on goals from Hansen and Miami of Ohio recruit Abby Casmere, a Downers Grove resident who leads the team in scoring with 11 goals.

“We always struggle with the first game of this tournament, so to get a win out of the way right away eased a little bit of the pressure off of us,” Oconer said. “The energy level (today) was really good from the very beginning and I think they were extra-motivated to take advantage of the early opportunity to really show what we can do next week when we start playing the (elite) teams.” the younger classmen who have stepped up when they have needed it.

Senior captains Griffen Liszka and Joe Martens are two players that really stand out to Wasik when it comes to leadership on and off the court.

“Those are two just very classy and outstanding kids,” Wasik said.

“They are the quintessential and epitome of what a captain should be, because they make the right decisions on and off the court, and when they talk the kids listen.”

The Trojans have five games remaining on the schedule before the post-season in the middle of May, and Wasik knows that now is the time to get hot.

“It’s just such a deep conference we play in, I mean sometimes teams who finish third in the conference go deep in state which just shows the competition we play against,” Wasik said.

But many of today’s youngsters spend much of their summer vacations indoors playing with their digital devices.

Perhaps that’s why one of the last vestiges of the classic summer vacation escape — summer camp — remains such a viable option for parents who want their children to get outdoors once the school year ends.

Although kids needn’t be in camp all summer long, a week or two can benefit campers of all ages.

The following are five reasons why summer camp might be the right

fit this year.

1. Explore talents. Summer camps help young people explore their unique interests and talents. Under an organized, yet often easygoing, camp schedule, kids can dabble in sports, arts and crafts, leadership, community support, and so many other activities that may not be fully available to them elsewhere.

2. Physical activity: Lots of camps build their itineraries around physical activities that takes place outdoors. Campers may spend their time swimming, running, hiking, playing sports, climbing, and so much more. This can be a welcome change for kids accustomed to living sedentary lifestyles. Regular physical activity has many health benefits and can set a foundation for healthy habits as an adult.

3. Gain confidence. Day and

Choosing a summer camp is no small task, as the options at families’ disposal range from overnight camps to weekday afternoon camps to camps that specialize in certain programs, such as music or dance.

Cost also is likely to factor into families’ decisions, as the American Camp Association notes that cost can vary greatly depending on which camp families choose. For example, the ACA notes that the average daily fee at a resident camp is $85, while the same fee at a day camp is $43.

When looking for a summer camp for kids, families should make the decision together. Kids should be involved in the selection process, as they’re more likely to have an enjoyable camp experience if they had a say in where they will be spending their summers. The following are some factors families should consider as they look for summer camps, courtesy of the ACA. Kids’ interests The ACA urges parents to consider the child’s interests and personality before choosing a summer camp. Parents might

want their children to attend the same summer camp they visited as youngsters, but each child is different. Just because mom and dad liked a particular camp does not mean their children will. The ACA notes that summer camps should align with children’s interests and maturity level.

Locale Locale may only be a consideration for families considering overnight camps. Kids will likely be familiar with the locations of local day camps, but overnight camps might be set in mountain ranges, near the ocean or environments less familiar to youngsters. Kids who love the ocean might benefit from oceanfront camps that focus on marine biology, boating or other activities involving the water. In the same vein, youngsters who like camping and hiking might be more likely to embrace camps located in mountainous regions.

Session length Camps may last as little as one week or up to a couple of months. Session length should be considered by families looking at both local day camps and overnight resident camps. Parents who want their children to enjoy a largely schedule-free summer might not want to commit their children to lengthy camp sessions.
