Downers Grove considers Warren Avenue parking restrictions By jonathan samples Bugle Staff

The Downers Grove village council is expected to approve an ordinance prohibiting parking on a stretch of Warren Avenue, east of Linscott Avenue.

“This was brought up by [Mayflower Tours] as a concern about site distance caused by park cars on the south side of Warren Avenue, which currently has a 4-hour parking restriction,” Director of Public Works Nan Newlon said at the April 12 council meeting.

On March 9, the transportation and parking commission unanimously approved a proposal that would restrict parking between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on the section of Warren 330 feet west of Saratoga Avenue to 30 feet west of Linscott Avenue.

Between six and seven parking spaces would be lost if the ordinance is approved as is by the village council.

“This recommendation was shared with the neighboring businesses, a couple who came to the TAP commission [meeting],” Newlon said. “There was some

back and forth, and we did modify this restriction to still provide the site distance improvement and reduce the amount of parking that was lost because of this change.”

Warren – cited safety concerns of drivers entering and exiting its driveways due to limited sight lines caused by on-street parking.

According to board documents, village staff observed “generally continuous use” of parking spaces

near the business during several field visits to the area.

“The safety concerns and reported accidents at Mayflower Tours has sparked requests from the owner to implement a time limit to allow for restrictions to on-street parking during business hours,” the document stated.

Village staff recommended approval of the ordinance, which will appear on the active agenda for the April 19 village council meeting.

Commissioners will also consider whether to modify a parking ban within the Springside Condominiums Complex.

Newlon said a Springside resident requested that parking restrictions be amended because the current parking ban has caused a lack of available visitor parking during daytime hours.

Currently, parking is prohibited at all times on one side of roads within the development and between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. along the other side.

Parking restrictions were put in place to prevent students who attend Downers Grove South High School, located east of Springside, from parking on streets.

The transportation and parking commission unanimously approved a recommendation from staff to amend the parking ban to the hours between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m.

“This will provide greater parking for residents during the daytime, will still deter students [from parking] and will provide a window of opportunity for the police to patrol if there’s any problem with enforcement,” Newlon said.

She added that the village has placed similar restrictions in other areas near schools and found that it has been effective.

Library asks for input on website updates Library patrons might have noticed some changes to the Downers Grove Public Library’s website.

Last week, the library announced that it slightly reorganized some content on the main menu its website, www.dglibrary.org. An “About Us” section contains organizational information, including current and past budgets, policies, job openings, and a staff directory; a “Services” tab that quickly directs visitors to some of the library’s frequently requested amenities, such as wireless printing, tax resources, and how to book a room or get a library card.

Additionally, books for children can be found under “Books,” children’s movies, music or homework resources can be found under “Research,” and storytimes and programs for kids are now found under “Events.”

“We are currently in the process of testing the reorganization

that was done to determine its usability,” the library said in a statement. “Your input is helpful in directing our future improvements.”

Westmont police host drug takeback program Saturday The Westmont Police Department will host an unwanted and expired drug disposal program from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 30 at the Westmont Police Department, 500 N. Cass Ave. Members of the Westmont

Police Department and the U.S. Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration collect pills, patches and needles that are in a Sharps container.

Liquids or creams will not be accepted. All medications being delivered to the collection site will be safely disposed of.

“This program is designed to provide citizens with an opportunity to safely dispose of old and unwanted prescription drugs,” Deputy Police Chief Ross Brenza said. “The goal of the program is to reduce substance abuse, especially with teens, as well as prevent potentially dangerous drugs from entering the fresh water supply.”

Beatles tribute band to perform at SEASPAR fundraiser The Southeast Association for Special Parks and Recreation will bring the Beatles to the burbs during a May 5 concert featuring the award-winning tribute band American English.

The concert is scheduled to take place May 5 at the Tivoli Theatre in Downers Grove.Proceeds from the concert will be used to support SEASPAR’s recreational programs and services for individuals with disabilities served by the park districts of Clarendon Hills, Darien, Downers Grove, La Grange, La Grange Park, Lemont,

Lisle, Westmont and Woodridge, as well as the villages of Brookfield, Indian Head Park and Western Springs.

An award-winning group of musicians that performs songs spanning the Beatles’ entire career, American English has been dubbed “The Complete Beatles Tribute” for its ability to bring audiences of all ages back in time to the era of the legendary band.

District 58’s Fit Fair to be held April 21 Event runs from 6-8 p.m. at O’Neill Middle School

Families are invited to enjoy free yoga classes, healthy snacks, fitness demos, hip hop dance classes, bowling, health screenings and more at District 58’s annual Fit Fair.

The school’s classrooms, hallways, cafeterium and gym will be lined with fun, kidfriendly activities, games and information booths related to healthy lifestyles during the event – scheduled to take place April 21 from 6-8 p.m. at O’Neill Middle School, 635 59th St. The event will also raffle off fantastic prizes, which include free personal coaching sessions, a kitchen-themed gift basket, a $25 gift certificate for a birthday party, massage gift certificates, a free season of lacrosse, free swim lessons and much more.

Popernik said the business office is finalizing bids for summer projects. He also noted that the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund would conduct an audit on District 58 that week. The last such audit took place about five years ago, according to Popernik, who added that he believes this audit should go well.

He also shared that District 58’s budget auditors are expected to begin work June 22.

Downers Grove Grade School District 58 opened its online registration for the 2016-17 school year April 11.

Parents are asked to submit

their child’s registration by Friday, May 13.

The system, powered by Infosnap, allows families to securely submit their children’s registration information online, as well as pay applicable fees either at the time of registration or in August.

All returning families received a personalized email with instructions on how to access the system. In addition, District 58 will send returning families registration information via backpack mail or U.S. postal mail for current seventh graders.

These messages include each child’s personalized “snapcode,” a password that lets parents log onto their child’s unique registration page.

Parents who prefer to register their child using paper forms may visit their child’s school to register, or download the forms on their school’s website.

New District 58 families must submit new family registration paperwork in person, but parents can print and complete most of the paperwork online in advance.

The Downers Grove village council is expected to award the first of several contracts for the village’s 2016 roadway maintenance program.

Director of Public Works Nan Newlon presented a first reading of a motion to award Geneva Construction Company of Aurora a $2.12 million contract

for the first portion of 2016 street resurfacing work.

The contract includes nonmotor fuel tax funded street maintenance.

“Work includes milling of pavement, resurfacing, base patching and curb replacements in areas where the curb has been damaged or deteriorated,” Newlon said.

Geneva Construction will resurface 30 street segments with a new layer of asphalt, as well as repair any defective sections of pavement or curb and gutter.

Newlon added that Geneva’s low bid was less than the amount village engineers estimated the project would cost, which she

attributed to lower oil prices.

The company has satisfactorily completed previous work for the village, including the 2008 39th Street resurfacing project, 2010 resurfacing projects, and the paving portion of the 2014 Downers Grove Estates-Esterbrook reconstruction project.

Additional work in the budgeted 2016 roadway maintenance program includes crack sealing and seal coating services, resurfacing contract B, and fall roadway patching.

A motion to award the contract is on the consent agenda for the April 19 village council meeting.

At press time, the meeting had not yet taken place.

“We have a great asset in our community in the Culture Center of Taipei, and this event is an enjoyable showcase of Taiwanese culture and cuisine,” Westmont

Mayor Ron Gunter said. The Westmont Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau is a supporter of the cultural event, which it said will benefit the community.

“This event presents a unique opportunity for families to come and enjoy and learn about Taiwanese culture and taste some great food – all to benefit area students,” WCCEF President Joe Moffa said. “This is truly an extraordinary event.”

Socrates kept things even simpler, encouraging his followers to “know thyself.”

Yet making the effort to explore what happens between our ears is a frightening endeavor. We worry that we won’t like what we find, and taking the time for self-exploration sounds about as fun as cleaning a dirty garage.

There’s also the issue of how to go about beginning the process. You might find yourself confused about how to get started, like the difficulty many find with trying to meditate for the first time. Consider using resources such as books and websites. For example, the website PsychCentral offers a list of prompts for daily self-reflection, while numerous authors have published self-help workbooks on the topic with prompts to jumpstart your quest. You might also consider taking a page from one of the most widespread and effective support groups ever known.

step by step In the 1930s, Alcoholics Anonymous was just getting started, and the group managed to do what no doctors or psychologists at the time could – find a solution to alcoholism. The program was built around 12 steps, the same steps that exist today. Although the program was designed for people with a drinking problem, many have noted that almost anyone can benefit from doing these steps.

The fourth step in the AA program addresses the notoriously intimidating project of self-examination. People working the steps sometimes move through steps one through three like a checklist, stating their agreement with the ideas and then moving on.

In theory, this works because the first three steps, while absolutely critical, do not require as much tangible evidence of their completion.

And, then comes step four: Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. Doing this step requires considerable thought, reflection, writing, remembering, and above all, discomfort. Yet, the growth that can be found on the other side is a genuine gift. take the good with the bad Unpacking old events and memories can produce many emotions, both negative and positive. The point of

looking inside is not to relive old hurts, but rather to see what’s really there so we can change the parts that continue to be roadblocks. Patterns of harmful behavior become evident, which then empowers us to make more effective choices.

It’s also important to include our strengths and positive attributes when we take an inventory. Here we can confirm the traits we like about ourselves and the accomplishments of our lives. A lot of people think they have to beat themselves up in order to do an effective inventory, and this simply isn’t the case. A thorough inventory includes the good, the bad and the ugly.

Count your blessings, literally Another powerful tool is making a gratitude list. This is a simple way of acknowledging the things in our life – great and small – for which we are thankful. Set a goal for how many things you want to name, and then start writing. Coming up with 20, 50 or even 100 items is easier than you imagine.

If you want to take this experience a step further, you can incorporate the gratitude list into a daily routine, such as journaling, prayer or meditation. In this way, self-reflection becomes a less intimidating task. As I believe is the case for anyone making a change, you have to do what works for you. There is not a single right way to engage in selfexamination, and the process is about progress, not perfection. Waves of discovery Historic discovery sheds light on universe, importance of federally funded research

Editor’s Note: The first direct observation of gravitational waves Sept. 14, 2015, was a Nobel Prizeworthy discovery that not only confirmed Albert Einstein’s theories on general relativity, but ushered in a new epoch in our ability to study and understand the universe.

This multipart series will explore the importance of federal investment in a curiosity driven pursuit 50 years in the making, and ask local leaders and those close to the project how something infinitesimally small could send such enormous shockwaves through the scientific community.

I

n February, the U.S. House of Representatives Science, Space and Technology committee held a special hearing to discuss the recent detection of gravitational waves by scientists working with the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory.

Among the representatives in attendance during that meeting was Congressman Bill Foster.

The Illinois Democrat holds rank among his colleagues as the only Ph.D. scientist in Congress. As a former high-energy physicist and particle accelerator designer, Foster took the opportunity to make his excitement over the historic discovery known to everyone who attended the Feb. 24 hearing.

“This is a discovery that will live on in the science textbooks forever,” he told the committee.

“And with this discovery, we have opened a new window into the universe, we have verified that our new telescope is working and now the fun begins.”

Foster is no stranger to milestone discoveries. While working on his Ph.D. thesis, Foster became a member of a team that detected a neutrino burst from supernova SN

1987A. That discovery earned the team the 1989 Bruno Rossi Prize for cosmic ray physics. While working at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, he was a member of the team that discovered the top quark – the heaviest known form of matter.

And while the current political climate often places balanced budgets over long-term science and research goals, Foster said the LIGO project is an example of federal investment in scientific research paying remarkable dividends.

“Twenty-five years after the National Science Foundation began courageous and sustained funding for [LIGO] to begin constructing this large and technically risky project, physicists have spectacularly confirmed Einstein’s theory,” he added.

The historic discovery that came from that investment has received praise from both sides of the aisle and it is one that Foster believes worthy of the Nobel Prize.

When the Bugle sat down with him to discuss the recent discovery and the future of LIGO, the 11th District congressman shared his thoughts on the intersection of science and politics and stated just how important he feels curiosity driven research is to the future of our country and our world.

“Deciding what fragment of your GDP you reserve for curiosity driven research or art or the other things that you do for your country so that you can be proud of it is essentially a political decision,” Foster said. “But, there’s also an indirect, but important, benefit to getting the next generation of students excited about science.”

Rainer Weiss, a professor emeritus of physics at MIT, is considered by many to be the brains behind the LIGO project.

On the shoulders of giants To be clear, gravitational waves weren’t actually “discovered” by LIGO researchers, who on Sept.

14, 2015, detected infinitesimal fluctuations in the fabric of spacetime.

The tiny vibrations detected by twin LIGO interferometers in Livingston, Louisiana, and Hanford, Washington, were caused by the collision of two massive black holes 1.3 billion years ago. That collision produced an enormous amount of energy in the form of gravitational waves, which traveled away from their source near the speed of light on a billionyear journey toward earth.

LIGO is a system of two identical detectors located almost 2,000 miles apart. Each detector consists of two 4-kilometer-long vacuum tubes, arranged in an L-shape, through which scientists send laser beams capable of detecting the gravitational waves.

By a stroke of luck, the gravitational waves produced by the collision of these two black holes passed through earth just

as LIGO scientists turned on their equipment.

“They were actually not quite started with the official data taking run,” Foster said. “They were just tuning [the equipment] up, when all of a sudden this signal arrived.”

For the first time, scientists had made direct observation of gravitational waves, thus confirming some of the fundamental features of Albert Einstein’s field equations on general relativity.

Gravitational waves had been theorized by Einstein in 1916, and scientists have been working ever since to detect the tiny ripples created during large cosmic collisions. In 1974, the discovery of a pair of neutron stars 21,000 light years away offered the first evidence of gravitational waves.

However, the story of LIGO goes back even further.

“If Einstein was still alive, I would have loved to have shown him the data; I would have loved to have seen what his expression would have been,” said Rainer Weiss, a professor emeritus of physics at MIT and the brains behind LIGO. Beginning with a thought

experiment he proposed to students in a course he was teaching on general relativity in the 1967, Weiss soon demonstrated that a laser interferometer could, in theory, detect gravitational waves. Eventually, he completed the invention of an interferometric gravitational wave detector – a 1.5-meter prototype of what later became LIGO. “Rai Weiss is an old friend of mine and quite likely to end up winning the Nobel Prize for this,” Foster said.

The story of how this prototype eventually led to one of the most important discoveries of the 21st century unfolded over the next four decades. Scientists had been hunting for gravitational waves ever since Einstein first hypothesized their existence.

But, Foster said it was Weiss who realized that it was conceivable to use available technologies to construct an instrument with the necessary sensitivity to detect the tiny waves.

“Then, he spent the next 20 years getting someone to fund bigger and bigger prototypes,” Foster added.

A remarkable scientific achievement in its own right, the detection of gravitational waves would not have been possible without funding from the National Science Foundation.

“That is the big reason why we made this big whoop de doo about this discovery,” Weiss said. “NSF was fundamental to this whole thing.”

Part two of this series will explore how LIGO benefited from federal funding, as well as the different ways this discovery could shape the next generation of scientists.

Don’t let the record fool you, Benet is a young team.

Even though the Redwings have started the season 5-1-1, they are doing so with several underclassmen.

Both the potential and youth showed itself April 11 in a 3-2 win over Joliet Catholic. The Redwings jumped out to a 3-0 halftime lead before allowing two second half goals.

“We start seven freshmen and sophomores and at times I had eight on the field,” Benet coach Bob Gros said. “There was some developmental stuff going on in the second half and you have to do that when you are that young. We have to be the youngest varsity team in the state. We’re doing ok, but the second half is a good example of when you are young and are getting bounced around by some bigger, older and physical kids.”

Katie Gesior, AnnMarie Berry and Nicole Burns scored goals in the game, with two assists to Mia Ullmer and another to Betsy Keefe.

“Our team worked really well tonight passing and moving,” Gesior said. “We work on a lot of drills and making good runs off the ball and playing together. Practice has really helped us in the games.”

Benet is pleased with the way the season has gone so far.

“We have only lost one game so far to St. Charles East and they are a good team,” Gesior said. “We handled them pretty well.”

Lisle baseball rebounds from opening loss to post successful week

Lisle fell to Seneca 5-4 as Bryan O’Connell had two RBI and Zach Heidenry went five innings on the mound, allowing seven hits and two earned runs, striking out seven.

The Lions rebounded to beat the Irish 11-8 as Alec Van Valkenburg went 3-for-5 with two doubles. Christian Grego, Drew English and Damien Guerrero all had two RBI. Lisle also beat Westminster Christian 13-5 behind three hits and two RBI from Heidenry and a pair of doubles and two RBI from English. Jason Lauridsen had two hits and two RBI and Emmett Malavia added three RBI. The Lions blew away Streator 19-1 as David White had three hits and three RBI, while Mark McGrath and Max Sokolowski each had two hits and two RBI. White allowed five hits and one earned run, striking out five.

Benet fell to Hinsdale Central 7-2 despite a home run and two hits from Alex Tassos.

The Redwings dropped a pair to St. Patrick Saturday, the first one a 4-0 loss and the second a 12-10 defeat.

Tassos had two doubles, a triple and two RBI, while Danny Sobolewski (4 RBI), Erik Jones and Ernsting all had two hits.

•Alan Janowick went 3-for-4 with two doubles in Downers North’s 8-4 win over Addison Trail. Brendan Shanahan added two hits and two RBI. Tyler Rosen went six innings, allowing three hits and an unearned run, striking out nine in the Trojans’ 9-1 win over York.

Mustangs look to rebound from rough weekend

The Downers Grove South softball team opened the season with a hot start, including a 3-1 record on a trip to Florida.

The Mustangs, however, dropped a double header to Lockport and Peotone at the Lockport Strike Out Cancer tournament.

The Mustangs fell 9-4 to the host Porters and 4-2 to the Blue Devils during a day coach Ron Havelka hopes is a wake-up call for South.

carries on it is not going to be a very long season,” he said. “We played really well yesterday and then came out here and laid an egg and we have a lot of work to do.”

With the early season success, Havelka said the team was cruising to early season wins without having to put forth maximum effort.

“The problem is it has been automatic,” he said. “We come in here and try and put it into another gear and they weren’t able to do it and things are going to have to change.”

Being a seasoned coach, Havelka knows while work has to be put is, it is not time to panic.

“It happens and we have had it happen before but we have people who have to play better.

I told them we have the talent, unfortunately, some of them are underachieving. It takes (heart).

You have to do something about it yourself. It takes some real soul searching and get it together and start playing some better softball.”

“We need solid defense,” Gesior said. “We have to work together and work hard off the ball.”

“I think we are going to keep improving,” Gros said. “Last week the weather was not conducive and the week before that was spring break, so our development was kind of stalled a little bit. So, we will see now. We have some good, solid practice time and we will see how it goes.”

No matter what happens, the

Redwings are built for not only the 2016 season, but for the next few years as well.

“This team has a tremendous future, obviously,” Gros said.

young kids and we have more coming along.”

Talk about boundaries with pushy pops Dear Dave, My husband and I are just starting to get control of our finances, but we have a problem. My dad has a habit of expecting us to buy things for him.

I know he has money, but anytime he knows we’re going to the store, he gives us a list of things he wants.

If he’s with us, he just throws things in the cart and expects us to pay. He acts like we have an obligation to do all this for him. I love my dad, but this has become annoying. What can we do?

Christina Dear Christina, I know you love your dad, but he sounds like the kind of guy who doesn’t really respect boundaries.

And these kinds of folks, as a rule, don’t like it when they’re suddenly confronted with them. Regardless, you need to have a firm but loving talk with your dad. Let him know how much he means to both of you, but remind him that you and your husband are working hard to get into better financial shape. This means you can’t spend more than is absolutely necessary. If he’s hungry, have him over for dinner. If he just needs one or two small things, that’s not such a big deal. But you’re not obligated to pay his way just because he’s your dad.

Like I said, he may or may not

like this conversation. He may fuss and throw a little fit, but at that point it becomes his problem, not yours.

Chances are he’ll come around in a week or so, and after he gets over the embarrassment of it all, everything will be all right again.

You aren’t an unloving or ungrateful daughter for not letting him run all over you. Talk to him in a kind, respectful way. If you feel you can’t stand up to him alone, ask your husband to lend support or put a voice to your wishes.
