Visual Artists earn National Scholastic Art Awards Downers Grove North and South students earn accolades at national level

Five District 99 Fine Arts students have earned national Scholastic Art and Writing Awards from the Alliance of Young Artists and Writers.

Kaitlyn Almazan (North High): Silver Medal Drawing and Illustration “Paranoia”, Mitch Kravec (South High): Silver Medal in Digital Art, Lucy Quinn (North High): Silver Medal Ceramics and Glass “Utterly Inconceivable”, Kate Sosnovsky (North High): Silver Medal Comic Art “Cosmic Bend” and Cosette Thompson (North High): Gold Medal Drawing and Illustration “The Narrow Doorway” were all the recipients.

Since 1923, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious award and recognition program for creative teens.

This year, the Scholastic Awards received 330,000 submissions for the 2018-2019 program year.

Receiving a National Medal from the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards places these student artists within the top one percent of all submissions from a national pool of art work.

“They have been supporting regional and national artists with awards for work in individual art as well as writing which is a pretty great thing,” said Glenn Williams, Department Chair of Fine Arts. “ Each year, the Alliance of Young Artists and Writers also partners with more than 100 visual arts and literary art organizations across the country to bring the Scholastic Art and

Aloft Hotel hosts musician Brother John Kattke Woodridge resident plays at local hotel, inspiring others through his music and words

Teens in grades 7–12 (ages 13 and up) apply in 29 categories of art and writing.

Panelists look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.

In total, 1,209 student artists representing 149 arts educators submitted 2,826 works of art for adjudication.

For South, 37 visual art students merited 83 awards, including 26 Gold Key Awards, 30 Silver Key Awards and 27 Honorable Mention Awards.

For North, 93 total awards were disseminated including two American Vision (Best of Show), 32 Gold Key Awards, 26 Silver Key Awards and 33 Honorable Mention Awards.

“Students submit to regional

affiliates and then the gold key winners from regionals are sent to the next level of adjudication and finally get recognized by national adjudication,” Williams said. “District 99 and Downers Grove is actually the host site for the regional affiliate scholastic show every year.”

Williams also added it’s a multi year production process for students, where the students work tirelessly on their portfolios and then when it comes to the shows and competitors, their instructor decides which pieces to submit for adjudication.

“The ongoing and diligent work by the students is unbelievable with the effort they put into this,” Williams said. “What they have accomplished from both schools is pretty amazing for District 99.”

The Aloft Hotel in Bolingbrook received a special visit from one of the most famous Chicagoland musicians in 2019, Brother John Kattke.

Brother John has been a resident musician at Buddy Guy’s Legend in Chicago for 25 years, playing at many surrounding areas and residing in Woodridge.

The well-known musician has played with Eric Clapton, Steve Miller, the Black Crowes and acquired ringing endorsements from many other musicians of renown.

Kattke said his passion for music started at five years old, when he began playing a ukulele for the first time.

One year later at the age of six, the piano fell into the talented musicians lap, followed by the fiddle and violin at age nine in the school orchestra.

“Starting at that young age really helped me I think,” Kattke said. “Playing those different instruments as I did and then picking up my brothers guitar when I was about 13 years old kind off got me started.”

When Kattke was 19 years old, he said he got sick too many times at his current workplace at that time which transpired into him getting fired.

From that point, he said he got a job with a band that was doing some local shows while also traveling, and then he knew that music was going to be his passion and his occupation for the rest of his life.

“One thing lead to another and I was brought down to

Buddy Guy’s place and I’ve been working there ever since,” Kattke said.

From all of his experiences from starting at a young age playing musical instruments to where Kattke is at now in his professional career, the musician has played at multiple different notable venues and crowds, including in front of Led Zeppelin vocalist Robert Plant.

Kattke performs double duty on both the guitar and keyboards, with a lot of his songs being root music, which is rock music that looks back to rock’s origins in folk, blues and country music.

Whether it’s playing at a local bar, a large venue in Paris or at hotel, Kattke said he tries to bring his best performance and something the crowd will always remember him by after it’s over.

“I will tailor my performance to the atmosphere but you still have to stay true to yourself and perform to your best ability no matter what the capacity of the crowd is,” Kattke said.

Although after playing for so many years in so many different areas, acquiring wrist pain has been something the musician has dealt with, but he said he has no plans to put down the guitar or keyboard anytime soon because to him, it’s the best thing in the world.

“I’ve been to the doctor for pain in my wrist and when they would ask me if it hurts when I play guitar, I would always respond with there’s never any pain when you play guitar,” Kattke said. “Music is the best painkiller you can get, you can never stop progressing as a musician or else you will get stale, just like as a human.”

START Chemistry helps Lisle soccer get off to a hot start to 2019 season

Lisle senior forward Alexa Fasone looks back fondly to when she was a freshman on the varsity.

The sense of inclusion she felt had a big impact on her. Now that she’s one of the veterans, Fasone aims to give back.

“As a freshman, there were a bunch of amazing seniors and juniors I got to use as my role models,” Fasone said. “(After) learning from them, their leadership and soccer skills, I just want to teach that to the incoming players because everyone has so much potential and I just see it as an amazing future for Lisle.”

Indeed, the future looks bright for the Lions, who have nine sophomores and four freshmen on the roster. But that group already is helping the present seem pretty darn good.

WINS TO START THE SEASON

With Fasone and fellow seniors McKenzie Weaver and Chloe Pokorny leading the way, Lisle is off to a 6-0-1 start, including 3-0 in the Interstate Eight Conference, following an 8-0 home win over Reed-Custer on April 9 at Wilde Field.

Fasone tallied a hat trick in that game and leads the team with 10 goals and five assists, while Weaver scored twice and now has seven goals and three assists.

So does freshman Emma Webb, who notched a goal and two assists against the Comets.

Webb could be the 2019 version of Fasone.

“It’s been really fun to work with her,” Fasone said. “She’s a natural talent and being able to bring that on the field is great.

“I knew from the start (she would be good). She’s a Webb.

She’s got classic soccer talent, so she’s got a name to live up to,

Cardinals win 20th game of the season

The North Central College softball team capitalized on twelve Blue Angels errors across their doubleheader to dispatch of Mount Mary University (4-15), posting a 7-3 victory in the opener and 9-1 rout in a five-inning nightcap Saturday.

Despite tallying seven runs in their game-one victory, North Central (20-6, 4-0 CCIW) was outhit 8-4 and largely relied on Mount Mary’s slipups for baserunners, who committed six errors and walked seven batters. On a particularly breezy afternoon at Shanower Family Field, the Blue Angels fielders struggled to follow fly balls, misplaying three in the opener alone.

Rachele Belletini started North Central’s onslaught in the first inning, doubling down the left field line to score Emily Miller, who led off the game with a walk. Two bat-

ters later, Molly Can hit a blooper to left field that allowed Belletini to score, pushing the hosts’ lead to 2-0.

The wheels started to fall off for Mount Mary in the second inning when the Cardinals added two more runs despite not getting a single base hit.

With runners on second and third, Jaime Smith hit a high fly ball that got the better of the center fielder, allowing both runners to score.

Mount Mary showed some signs of life in the fourth, tallying three hits and scoring twice to cut North Central’s lead in half. Aislinn Strusz doubled through the middle to bring a pair of Blue Angels across the plate, but the visitors wouldn’t come any closer to tying the game, as North Central stretched their lead by scoring a run in each of the following three innings.

Taylor Clugston showcased her base running prowess in the fourth inning when she scored af-

ter taking a walk without the ball being put into play by stealing second and third before taking home on a wild pitch, just barely getting under the tag.

The following inning the Blue Angles walked in a run and in the sixth Samantha Gadomski hit an RBI-triple.

Although Strusz added another RBI for her team in the sixth inning, Mount Mary couldn’t generate the offense they needed to comeback.

Molly Cann finished two-forfour with a run and RBI, while Miller had two runs and a gamehigh three walks.

Entering the game with five stolen bases on the year, Clugston added four more to her season total.

In the circle for the Cardinals, Gadomski struck out a seasonhigh seven batters to improve to 5-0.

Webb’s three older brothers – Patrick, J.D. and Connor – all played for Lisle’s boys soccer team. Patrick was a co-captain on the Lions’ Class 1A state championship team in 2010 and the squad that finished second in 2011.

That’s quite a legacy to follow, and making an impact as a freshman is a tall task for anyone, but the 5-foot-9 Webb has proven to be a quick study and a savvy operator on the field.

“She’s going to be a force for four years for our opponents to worry about,” Lisle coach Paul Kohorn said of Webb. “In basketball or soccer, the girl is just an outstanding athlete.”

For Webb, nurture is just as important as nature and she’s been welcomed with open arms by her older teammates.

“It’s just so much fun,” Webb said. “It’s a great opportunity to be given by coach Kohorn and all the players. Just the whole vibe from our whole team is so positive. With Alexa and McKenzie and Chloe, we have

Just as she did in the opener, Miller drew a walk to provide her team a leadoff runner, scoring courtesy of a sacrifice bunt from Belletini.

The Cardinals added a run in the second when Clugston knocked an RBI-triple that one-hopped the wall in right field.

Although the Blue Angels got on the board in the third, Gianna Corban (9-3) kept them at bay, tossing a gem in the nightcap. The freshman struck out four of the first six batters she faced and kept Mount Mary hitless until Haley Jacquez reached on a fourthinning bunt, which proved to be their only hit of the game. Corban would add two more strikeouts before the game’s early end and dropped her ERA to 2.19.

North Central’s bats heated up in the fourth, where they found nearly half of their hits. Smith, Bel-

letini and Breanna Adams all recorded RBIs in the inning to bring North Central’s lead to 6-1. The Cardinals picked up where they left off in the fifth picking up three more hits. Miller brought in two runs with a single, while Belletini found the gap in left-center field to end the game with an RBI-double.

Belletini led all players with three RBIs and has now recorded an RBI in the last six games. Smith, Belletini and Clugston all finished with multiple hits in the contest, while Miller scored a game-high three runs.

Haley Small took the loss for Mount Mary, moving to 2-7 on the season. The right-hander recorded two strikeouts and allowed two earned runs in 4.1 innings.

North Central resumes College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) play on Tuesday, Apr. 15, when they host Carthage College for a doubleheader. First pitch at Shanower Family Field is scheduled for 3 p.m.

such a great senior force this year. They are so peppy and they keep our team always trying our hardest to do the best that we can.

“I’m a freshman, but I feel like I can hang out with anyone I want to because they’re so comforting and positive.”

That comfort level permeates the team, which includes three sets of sisters. Fasone’s sister Emma, a sophomore, scored her first goal of the season against Reed-Custer and also had two assists.

“I’m really proud of her,” Alexa Fasone said. “She’s a sophomore so she’s got much more to come.

We’ll see what she does.”

Kohorn is eager to see what the Lions can do, both this season and in years to come. They have seven returning starters from a team that reached the Class 1A sectional finals last year.

“We’re young and I’m pretty excited about this group,” Kohorn said. “We’ve got so many girls who are standing out. I’m still not quite sure what I’ve got here, but I know I’ve got something good, so I’m excited.”

As good as Webb is, she may have to wait to take her turn as the team’s brightest star even after the seniors graduate. Sophomore Tara Kane has scored six goals and two assists despite missing two weeks with an injury and she is expected back this week.

Freshman Carolyn Romo has two goals and four assists and combined with fellow defenders Cassidy Allen, Maddie Hutchinson and Gabrielle Sojka – all sophomores – to hold Reed-Custer without a shot.

It all starts with the leadership of Alexa Fasone, who plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh and become a nurse.

“I’m a little biased because she’s my sister, but she’s a very good leader,” Emma Fasone said. “She helps get everyone going in the beginning and in the end, even if we’re down, she will score.

Webb is grateful to play with someone who sets such a positive tone.

“She’s just a great captain and leader,” Webb said. “Everything she gives to our team; we can’t thank her enough.”

Former Student Accused of Threatening Teacher at Lincoln Academy in Addison “The well-being of our children and those who teach them remains a top priority of my administration” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Addison Director of Police Bill Hayden announced today that a former Lincoln Academy student has been accused of threatening a teacher at the Addison school.

The juvenile appeared at a detention hearing this morning where Judge Anthony Coco ordered that he be placed on home detention.

It is alleged that on April 11, 2018, at approximately 7:55 a.m., the juvenile, who is four-

teen years-old called the school and threatened to shoot one of the staff members stating, “He is going to get it today, right in the head.” Upon receiving the alleged call, authorities at the school contacted the Addison Police Department. Through their investigation, Addison police officers identified the juvenile as a suspect. He was taken into custody without incident from his home yesterday afternoon.

“Any threat of violence aimed

at a school will immediately be investigated and if found credible, will be charged accordingly,” Berlin said. “Teachers can’t teach and students can’t learn if they are in fear for their safety while at school. I would like to thank authorities at Lincoln Academy for alerting law enforcement to this incident as well as the Addison Police Department for their quick response and apprehension of the suspect in this case. I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorney Lynn Cavallo for her work in helping us keep our schools as safe as possible.”

“The well-being of our children and those who teach them remains a top priority of my administration,” Hayden said.

“Because of this commitment, the Addison Police Department takes any threat, real or perceived, directed at our students and school personnel extremely seriously. I would like to thank the officers who worked on this case for their efforts as well as the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office for their continued efforts in protecting our schools from harm.”

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt.

A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Be intentional with your time outside work DEAR DAVE, As a business owner, how do you find a life balance between work and home? I have my own small business, and sometimes I feel like I’m putting in too much time at the shop and not spending enough time with my husband and kids.

MOLLY DEAR MOLLY, The idea of everything being in balance, on an everyday basis, is

a myth. It’s simply not possible to perfectly juggle every aspect of our lives every single day.

The key, I think, is to strive for an overall balance over time. You know first-hand the long hours and how work can interfere with other things if you’re not careful.

The answer lies in really being into whatever you’re doing.

When you’re not at your shop or taking care of work-related matters, actively participate in conversations with your spouse and kids—and listen. Spend time with them! Turn off your cell phone when you go on dates with your

husband and when you take your kids on outings.

When you’re with your family you should really be with them.

Then, when you have to work, chances are they won’t be so upset, and you’ll feel better about things, too!

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, Our son is 17, and he is in school.

He has a good part-time job, and my wife and I started teaching him basic money management at a young age. He understands the importance of saving, giving, and spending, plus he is setting aside money for technical school after he graduates from high school. Do you think it would be an appropriate real-world exercise if we started charging him a very small amount in rent each month to prepare him for life when he leaves home?

Barry DEAR BARRY, I appreciate the fact that you’re looking for teachable moments,

but I really think charging a teenager rent while he’s living at home is going too far. Now, if he was 28 or 29, that’d be a different story. But as parents, it’s still your responsibility to provide a home for your 17-year-old child.

It sounds like you’ve done a fantastic job already of helping your son grow into a responsible young man. He knows how to work, and he has grasped the basic concepts of managing money. I meet people three times his age on a regular basis who still haven’t done that. With this kind of start, I’ve got a feeling your kid will be fine.

I also think, with this kind of start, he has a great chance of becoming wealthy some day!
