Village to receive grant Annual walk for autism is April 23 funds for LED streetlights UPCOMING EVENT

Charlie’s Gift has helped hundreds of children, providing $334K in services The Community House is excited to announce its 10th Annual Walk the Walk for Autism on Sunday, April 23. All of the proceeds raised by the Walk will go to support Charlie’s Gift Autism Center, a program of The Community House that addresses the needs of children and families facing autism and other related disorders. This year’s 3-mile Walk will step off from The Community House 415 W. Eighth Street, Hinsdale, at 8:30 a.m., rain or shine.

Although autism occurs in children, it affects the entire family and circle of support for a lifetime. 1 in 68 children are affected by an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), with 5 times more boys than girls diagnosed.

Caring for an individual with ASD over their lifetime can range from $3.5-7 million, not including the care that should be provided to siblings, parents, caregivers, and others involved in supporting the individual.

Charlie’s Gift Center for Autism and Related Disorders addresses the needs of children and families facing autism and related disorders. As a community-wide resource serving the Chicago metro area, Charlie’s Gift strives to support the family as whole, educate the community and raise awareness about the importance of beginning therapy early so children have the best possible start to reach their full potential. Since becoming part of The Community House, Charlie’s Gift has helped hundreds of children and families providing $334,687 in programs and services to those affected by ASD each year.

A comprehensive array of individualized therapies and group activities including speech, occupational, mental health/behavior, and social/ motor/sensory development

are provided with the child, parents, siblings, extended family members, and caregivers treated as a unit to form a circle of support. Each family receives a unique treatment plan with individualized goals, objectives, and measurable outcomes tailored to each child’s strengths and needs.

Families who need comprehensive services should not be faced with the worry of how to pay for services. Private insurance or fees paid by families cover less than 60 percent of the cost of providing services leaving families or caregivers seeking options to cover unpaid costs. And fees only cover the cost of the therapist’s time for a specific one-on-one or group session. Many other essential services not covered by insurance payments include presession and post-session planning, meetings and programs for parents and siblings, new program development, training and educational materials, referral resources, therapeutic supplies and equipment, and community outreach and advocacy efforts.

Since fees generally cover only 60 percent of the costs of providing necessary services, the remaining 40 percent must be covered by fundraising efforts.

Each year Walk the Walk for Autism raises over $90,000 to help cover these additional costs.

Each step taken in Walk the Walk for Autism supports the comprehensive and family-centered services provided to children, families and our local community through Charlie’s Gift.

Village intends to purchase 40 LED lights, brackets for installation along Internationale Parkway

The Woodridge Village Board of Trustees approved a pair of measures aimed at purchasing some new LED streetlights for future use along Internationale Parkway.

In two separate votes at their April 6 meeting, officials unanimously authorized a pact with the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus for acceptance of an Illinois Energy Now grant and waived the competitive bidding process to allow the village’s director of public works to retrieve a quotation from Lighting Solutions.

Jack Knight, assistant to the village administrator, said it was important for the board to take action.

“It’s a matter of timing,” he said.

“We needed to move forward with this in order to accept the grant.”

All work performed in connection to the Illinois Energy Now grant must be completed by May 8.

Typically, municipalities are required to adhere to the competitive bidding process. In this case, Woodridge officials are working to waive this measure because there are no other companies that could handle the order.

The village intends to purchase 40 LED lights and brackets for installation along Internationale Parkway between Lemont and Joliet roads.

“What has been happening in Woodridge is certain technologies were available over the years,” Knight said. “We have a variety of lights. We have put LED lights in newer areas. Our experience is that they’re positive. LED offers two advantages: labor is reduced less energy consumption. It’s not only a savings for Woodridge, but it’s also safer for the environment. We’re happy to do that wherever we can.”

The village’s effort to install new LED lights is still in the pilot phase.

“As it demonstrates itself as a technology that works for us, we’re still deciding whether or not to introduce more LED lights,” Knight said.

The total project is projected at $32,464 before deducting the costs met through an Illinois Energy Now grant of $15,415.

Agreement for Woodridge, DuPage County water quality improvement project approved To ensure constituents that efforts to improve water quality are continuing to meet the community’s needs, the Woodridge Village Board of Trustees approved an intergovernmental agreement with DuPage County for grant funding to satisfy this aim.

In a unanimous vote, Woodridge officials authorized a pact between the village and for an improvement project targeted at Prentiss Creek.

The waterway in question has exhibited issues stemming from erosion over time.

“It creates a need to carry away water in the event of a storm,” he said. “It may not operate as effectively if the bank were not affected by erosion.”

In 2007, the village completed a stream bank inventory and condition rating of various waterways in the community. That led Woodridge officials to complete two projects on Crabtree Creek last year.

Now, the village intends to address water quality issues stemming from Prentiss Creek. The effort to stabilize this creek will cost $153,895 in total.

Grant funding in the amount of $38,473 obtained through DuPage County’s Water Quality Improvement Program is to help the village design a way to deal with erosion.

New members join D. 99 school board

Each new member will begin a fouryear term and take the oath of office on May 1, 2017

Community High School District 99 in Downers Grove congratulates incumbents Terry Pavesich and Rick Pavinato and newcomers Sherell Fuller and Daniel Nicholas on their successful campaigns to serve as members of the District 99 Board of Education. Each will begin a four-year term and take the oath of office on May 1, 2017, after the DuPage County Election Commission provides the official election results.

Also at the meeting, the board will elect officers and establish future meeting dates and times. The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Administrative Service Center, located at 6301 Springside Avenue in Downers Grove.

“We look forward to continuing to partner with Terry and Rick and

welcoming Sherell and Daniel as members of our School Board,” says District 99 Superintendent Dr. Hank Thiele. “Serving as a member is a huge commitment, and we look forward to collaborating with the members to ensure the continued success of our students and schools.”

District 99 also thanks Julia K. Beckman and Deborah Boyle, outgoing members, for their service on the Board. Beckman served the Board for 24 years, including as vice president for four years and president for ten years. She also served on the Illinois Association of School Boards Governing Board from 1999 to 2001, the National Affiliate of NSBA from 2001 to 2005, and the School Association for Special Education in DuPage County (SASED) Board of Control from 2001 to 2017. She was also appointed by former Governor Quinn to serve as Representative to the Illinois Humanities Council.

“Julia has always brought stability and a thoughtful voice to all board discussions, and we admire

her for her long tenure of service, support of our schools and wisdom,” says Thiele.

Boyle has served the board since 2009, including as vice president for two years. She was part of the creation of a future facility plan, numerous collective bargaining agreements and the hiring of a new superintendent. She served on the Financial Advisory Committee for four years and was representative to the IASB Governing Board and Delegate Assembly and the National Affiliate of NSBA for six years.

“Deb has always been a champion of education, as well as being financially prudent for taxpayers,” says Thiele. “Throughout the years, she has helped lead conversations about how the district can adjust operations and spending without sacrificing quality.”

Current school board members include Michael Davenport, Nancy Kupka and Don Renner.

Declutter by Setting Limits Set a limit on how much you’re willing to store, and enjoy the peacefulness of owning less COME TO ORDER

By Sue Becker Hooray – the calendar and the weather are inching their way towards Spring! Have you gotten the itch to do some Spring cleaning? How many times in the past have you unsuccessfully tried to pare down the clutter in your home? Too many to count? Maybe a different approach can help. Read on to discover a different way of looking at things.

As you create your Spring cleaning plan, what if you turned your focus to how much space you’re willing to give to each category of item, rather than directly focusing on how much of each category you actually have? Recognizing that giving space to any one category takes away space that might otherwise be used to store something else, you can use containers, furniture, or areas of a room to limit the amount of space you’re willing to dedicate to any one category.

Let me give you an example. Let’s say books are a primary source of clutter in your home – they not only fill up

a multitude of shelves, but also spill out of boxes in your attic and are piled on surfaces throughout your home.

What if you declared that you’re only willing to have as many books as you have space on bookshelves? If you have more books than shelf space, you have several options: • Keep all the books because you don’t see any reason to get rid of any of them. Fair enough, you only need to consider doing something different if the pain of the clutter is greater than the pain of paring down.

• Buy more shelves.

• Pare down your book collection to fit on the shelves you currently have, and if you bring in more books, let go of enough so that they will all still fit on your shelves.

I’ve taken a similar approach to keepsakes – I have a bin on a closet

shelf that holds old greeting cards, my kids’ school work, etc. Several times the box has been filled to overflowing, but rather than give in to the temptation to buy more bins, I pared down the contents. Although you might suspect that this would have been a gutwrenching experience, it was actually quite enjoyable: It gave me a good reason to visit the treasures I otherwise would probably have never looked at and choose those that still hold meaning. Putting some time between my original saving of the items and revisiting them made it clear that what was once meaningful was no longer all that special for many things. If I ever get to a point that I can’t pare down enough to have it all fit in that bin, I’ll photograph items so I can save the memory while also saving space.

So whether it’s books, keepsakes, food storage containers, papers, clothes, kitchen utensils, or something else, set a limit on how much you’re willing to store, and enjoy the peacefulness of owning less.

“He [good-naturally] told me that he won the state title his first year and told me there’s a lot of pressure,” Berg said of the advice she received from Havelka. “But I’m only the third coach in Downers Grove South history.”

Gretchen (Doss) Sauer was the first coach from 1973-1992.

Being in the program the past three seasons, Berg already knows the expectations and how high the bar has been set.

“I’m so excited,” Berg said.

“I still have our amazing award winning staff [NFCA High School National Coaching Staff of the Year in 2016] and I value their experience. Just coaching under

Ron and the legacy he’s left us. He was so invested in his players, he wanted them to succeed on and off the field.”

All Havelka did in his 24 years as head coach was have a career record of 704-169-4, win at least 22 games in 23 of those seasons, capture 16 regional titles, seven sectional titles, and bring home four state trophies — including the Class AA state championship in his first season in 1993 and a Class 4A third place trophy last spring.

Havelka is glad to see Berg take over the reigns for the Mustangs.

“She’s got a passion for the game and is very enthusiastic,” he said. “She’s very genuine, she’s a very good person and a good role model. She’s excited about it and she should be. We had some key people graduate from last years team, but this is an opportunity for her to run her own team. She’ll do a good job.”

tive family,” Berg said. “I have two older brothers, Pat and Ryan Morita, and we were always competitive in board games and everything.”

Berg, whose maiden name was Morita, is a 2005 Lockport Township graduate and she played softball for the Porters. She and her husband, Michael, still live in Lockport.

An attention to detail was something that was instilled in Berg at Lockport. While she played basketball her freshman and sophomore seasons, and tennis her first three years, it was softball that she loved. Even if she didn’t star at it.

“I was a role player,” she said of her time with the Porters. “So I had to watch the other players and learn from observing. I think that’s something I can use [as a coach] because I understand role players. I was consistently behind other players, but I wanted their position as much or more than

As a junior, Berg was a member of the 2004 Class AA state champion Porter softball team. Her backup role was personified in her stats for that season. She appeared in 35 games, but mostly as a pinch runner or defensive replacement. She scored more runs that season (13) than she had at bats (12).

As a senior in 2005 she had a similar role, but got some starts in right field, in helping the Porters to a Class AA state quarterfinal appearance.

“Even though I was not a regular starter I was named one of (4) the team captains my senior year,” Berg said. “The coaches at Lockport were my absolute favorites. I love how coach [Marissa] Chovanec runs her practice. Every player has a purpose.”

Berg’s high school coach is very happy that a former player is now taking over as a coach of another top program.

“I am excited that Lauren is taking over the program,” Chovanec

said. “Ron did a great job establishing Downers Grove South as a perennially great softball program. I believe Lauren understands the importance of the coaches that have come before her in a program, like Downers, since she too was a product of a similar program here at Lockport.

“Lockport has had only two head coaches in its history of softball. I feel like Downers mirrors Lockport in so many ways. I believe Lauren will build on Ron’s legacy. Lauren has the passion for the sport, the knowledge of the game, the understanding of its players and excitement needed to carry on the legacy of Downers Grove softball. Lauren will bring her own experience to create a culture based on her standards but will recognize the past and celebrate its traditions too.”

Following high school Berg attended Millikin University in Decatur, IL where she started every game of her career in center field and served as team captain her final three seasons. During

her collegiate career, she earned All-Conference and Academic All-Conference recognition in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW).

She graduated from Millikin in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education in social sciences. During the winter of 2015, she received her first master’s degree in Teaching and Learning with a concentration in Special Education from the University of Saint Francis in Joliet.

She is currently pursuing her second master’s degree in Teaching and Learning with a concentration in Integrated Curriculum from American College of Education.

Once she graduated from Millikan she served as assistant varsity and head junior varsity coach in softball, girls’ tennis and girls’ basketball at Bloomington High School, Illinois. Prior to her career at Bloomington, Berg coached two years for an 18/under summer softball team, the Homer Hawks from Homer Glen. Addi-

tionally, she served as a softball assistant coach at Bloomington Junior High School (IL) in the fall of 2010 and helped lead the team to a second place finish in the Illinois Elementary School Association [IESA] state tournament.

Berg came to Downers Grove South in the fall of 2013 and is a social studies teacher at the school. Last season she served as assistant varsity coach and before that was head junior varsity coach for two years there.

“Our team is developing a new identity based on the tradition of our past successes,” Berg said.

“We are working hard to be explosive and relentless. This team is one of the hardest working teams that I have ever coached. We have girls that truly want to work hard and to the best of their abilities.

Our strength will be our experience from previous seasons of being in big games and under pressure, especially during our post season runs.”

How seniors can preserve their brains Regular social activities help keep awareness Physical activity and proper diet and nutrition can help people age 50 and older maintain their physical health.

But there are also ways aging men and women can preserve brain health in an effort to prevent or delay the cognitive decline that affects millions of seniors across the globe.

It’s easy to overlook the importance of keeping the brain healthy. However, a decline in brain function can result in poor concentration, memory loss and a host of other issues. Sometimes, by the time symptoms present themselves, it may be too late to reverse any damage.

Research suggests that a combination of nutrition and mental, social and physical activities may have a greater impact with regard to maintaining and improving brain health than any single activity. Harvard Medical School also states that volunteering, caring for others and pursuing hobbies may benefit the brains of older adults.

A study published in the Archives of

General Psychiatry found participants who reported higher levels of purpose in life exhibited superior cognitive function despite the accumulation of abnormal protein depositions (amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles) in the brain, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. Having a purpose also may help those who do not have Alzheimer’s disease.

In addition to the suggestions mentioned above, those who want to boost brain health can consider these strategies.

• Start exercising the brain early on.

A study published in 2012 in the British Medical Journal examined cognitive function in people ages 45 to 70. Researchers found evidence of cognitive decline in the 45-yearold participants as well as the older participants. It’s never too early to put a brain health plan into motion.

• Read more books. Reading can open individuals up to new vocabulary and scenarios that promote a stronger brain and recall ability. Enrolling in an education course at a local college, community center or online also

may be beneficial.

• Hit the gym. Several studies suggest an association between physical activity and reduced risk of cognitive decline. This could be because exercise elevates heart rate, which pumps more blood to the brain and body.

• Supplement with DHA. DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid that is dominant in the brain. Adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which is generally high in natural sources of omega-3, including fish and monounsaturated fats from olives, olive oil, nuts and seeds. Supplements also may help, but individuals should consult with their doctors about which products to take.

• Challenge the mind. Men and women can engage in challenging activities that stray from their routines. Puzzles, strategic games, jigsaw puzzles, or difficult hobbies can benefit the brain.

• Keep a close-knit group of friends.

Regular conversation and social interaction is a key component of any brain health wellness plan.

• Slowing cognitive decline and promoting greater brain health should be a priority for adults of all ages.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each week women who are 65 years or older, are generally fit and have no limiting health conditions should combine at least two days of musclestrengthening exercises with at least two hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity.

Women capable of more strenuous cardiovascular activity can substitute one hour and 15 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity with their two and a half hours per week of more moderate-intensity exercise.

The CDC notes that distinguishing between moderate-intensity exercise and vigorous-intensity exercise is pretty simple.

Women can use a 10-point scale in which sitting is zero and working as hard as is physically possible is 10.

Moderate-intensity aerobic activity will make women breathe harder and elevate their heart rates, but should not make them feel completely drained at the end of a workout.

These activities will register as a five or six on the 10-point scale.

Vigorous-intensity aerobic activity includes those exercises that women would deem a seven or eight on the 10-point scale.

Such activities should elevate the heart rate considerably and get

women breathing hard enough that they will be unable to say more than a few words without pausing to catch their breath.

No two women are the same and age must be considered when developing a healthy exercise regimen, but brisk walking may qualify as moderate-intensity aerobic activity while jogging or running would be considered a vigorousintensity activity.

Step-up, be good to your family first, and then your good times will come DEAR DAVE, My wife and I argue a lot about finances. We’re trying to get more control over our money, and she has been listening to you.

That’s helped a lot. She’s also a lot more frugal than I am, and our biggest point of contention right now is how we handle our spending money.

Whenever I work overtime at my job, I feel like I should be able to put the overtime pay toward my spending money. What are your thoughts on this?

JOSH DEAR JOSH, No way, dude! You don’t work overtime for your little boy wants.

You work overtime, and rake in that extra cash, for the good of your family. That’s the manly thing to do.

Now, that’s not to say you both can’t have a little spending money.

It also doesn’t mean that you can’t treat yourself once in a while if you’re working your tail off. I mean, if I’m working 70 to 80 hours a week I may give myself a little inexpensive treat in the midst of all that.

So, my spending money budget should reflect that.

But it shouldn’t reflect a sense that I get to play more because I work extra, while the rest of the family suffers.

Sorry, man. I think you knew what I was going to say. Step-up, be good to your family first, and then your good times will come. If you

haven’t learned it already, you’ll soon discover that those good times are best ones!

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, My daughter is 15, and she’s had jobs around the house and been on commission and the envelope system for years. She’s very good about saving and not spending on silly things. We recently opened a checking account for her, and I was wondering what bills you think we should assign for her to pay on her own?

SUZANNE DEAR SUZANNE, This sounds a lot like we did with our kids. She’s obviously bright and motivated, so the first thing you do is explain to her the seriousness and responsibility associated with a checking account.

The next step is for her to balance the checkbook with you looking over her shoulder.

Do this with her for several months, while you keep one on the account, too.

After that, I want her to do it

alone and show you her work. Her balance should match yours and the one at the bank.

As soon as she demonstrates competency, and you feel comfortable that she can handle things, I want you to start putting her clothing budget in the account.

You know, the weirdest thing happened with our girls at this stage.

They suddenly started shopping at less expensive stores. It’s amazing when they see that the dollars associated with these purchases can run out. My bet is you’ll see some changes in her value choices.

Just take it step-by-step, a little at a time. The more they exhibit competence, wisdom, and confidence, the more you can release them.
