Downers Grove students ‘Dance Off’ rare diseases Feb. 29 event planned to coincide with Rare Disease Day

Students at Kingsley Elementary School danced with a purpose during the third annual visual “Dance Off Disease” fundraiser.

The event was held Feb. 29 and is an effort to support individuals living with rare diseases by letting students cut loose with dances like the cha-cha slide, chicken dance and even a round of limbo.

Kingsley’s student council organized the event to coincide with Rare Disease Day. Millions of people around the world have rare diseases, which are defined by 200,000 or fewer cases.

Student council sponsor Ashley Bidlencik said holding the event works well for a number of reasons.

“I’m an old dance instructor, so I thought it would make sense to hold the event,” she said.

Throughout the afternoon, each class at Kingsley School spent 15 minutes dancing in the campus’ multipurpose room.

Lily Myszak, 12, was one of Bidlencik’s students leading other children in the dances.

She said the time spent giving back to the community for a good cause is enjoyable, but added that it’s just really fun to get away from class work and dance with your friends.

“I really like to dance,” she said.

“It’s fun. Me and my family have dance parties at home.”

Donations were being accepted at the time of the event and would benefit the Global Genes Project – a leading global advocate for rare and genetic disease patients – and Noah’s Hope – an organization raising funds for treatment and a cure for Batten disease.

The latter is a terminal illness that does not currently have a cure.

Noah’s Hope was started by Downers Grove parents Jennifer and Tracy VanHoutan. Their two children – 11-year-old Noah and 10-year-old Laine – are battling LINCL-Batten disease.

The rare disease causes people to lose their speech, balance and mobility, according to the Noah’s Hope website (http://www. noahshope.com/).

On average, Dance off Disease brings in about $600 to $700, according to its organizers. This year, Kingsley School set its fundraising goal at $600.

On behalf of the Global Genes Project, students wore “gene” ribbons in support of the cause.

Bidlencik said the hope is that more people will gain a greater understanding for rare diseases and the challenges those diagnosed with these illnesses face.

“It helps to spread awareness because it’s not like cancer,” she said. “By passing out the ribbons, they hope to spread awareness for rare diseases.”

Downers Grove Library director recalls 42-year career ahead of March 31 retirement

When Rick Ashton says farewell to the Downers Grove Public Library March 31, the long-time library administrator plans to travel and, of course, read plenty of books.

Ashton, 70, announced in November that he would retire from his position as library director at the end of March. With his last day approaching, it hardly comes as a surprise that a man who has dedicated more than four decades to public libraries has books on the brain.

“I have a few travel destinations in mind that my wife and I have been discussing, and I have lots of books I’ve been planning to read all these years,” joked Ashton, who will also spend time with his grandchildren and volunteering at his Oak Park church.

Ashton began working in libraries in 1974, and he has seen a lot change during his 42 years on the job. Back then, coin operated copy machines were considered an innovation and computers were the size of a house, Ashton recalled. Even paperback books were quite rare in libraries.

“Libraries were functioning in the 1970s very much as they had been 50 years before,” he said.

Since then, Ashton noted that everything from technology and the availability of information to the publishing industry as a whole has experienced rapid change.

Even factors such as personal mobility, teaching methods and the way people spend their leisure time have affected the ways in which a library functions in a community.

“All of these things have changed dramatically in the past 40 years, as much as, or more,

than in the previous 100 years,” he added. “You could name almost any aspect of library activity, and it has been affected by all of these changes.”

From 1985 to 2006, Ashton was the city librarian at the Denver Public Library, which recently named the formal meeting room in its Central Library the “Rick Ashton Legacy Room.”

He followed up that position with what he called an “encore performance” in Downers Grove.

Despite the ongoing evolution of publishing and library technology, Ashton said libraries have still maintained a high degree of continuity. When he was hired as library director in September 2011, Ashton had this in mind. He led the Downers Grove Library through a major building renovation and modernization effort, while also taking steps to preserve its historic connections to the community.

“A lot that we do looks very much like it did when the Downers Grove Public Library set up for business 125 years ago,” Ashton said. “So, books on shelves, programs for children, reading recommendations from staff members, lending out books

for specified periods with certain rules and expectations – those are all quite similar.”

Balancing this continuity against ongoing changes to a library’s form and function influenced the lengthy “to-do”

list Ashton says he brought with him to Downer Grove. That list included technology upgrades, refreshing the library’s collection, creating a strategic plan, and placing a strong emphasis and focus on service.

By far, the largest item on that list was a $2.4 million building renovation that included additional study space, a cafe and enhanced displays.

“All of the things we have done

have been well received by the community, and the library’s numbers have gone up,” Ashton said. “The number of items checked out, the number of people in through the door, the number of people attending programs, online activity; all of those use figures have continued to grow.”

When the building renovation was completed in October 2014, the last item on the director’s todo list had been crossed off. It was at that time that Ashton felt it would be appropriate for the library board and a new director to form a subsequent list.

“And just as a footnote, I’m also 70 years old,” he joked.

Despite taking a less active role in choosing his successor, the veteran library administrator does have a a few observations about where he feels the library is headed. Ashton anticipates an increased effort by library staff to understand and better serve the community, ongoing technology upgrades, and infrastructure improvements to the building.

“The technology changes are constant, and we have finally learned that you can never sit still on those matters,” he said.

The library is currently in the beginning stages of hiring Ashton’s successor. The library announced that assistant directors Sue O’Brien and Bonnie Reid would begin serving as cointerim library directors April 1.

Executive search firm Bradbury Associates is assisting the library, and Ashton said the firm is currently accepting applications and recruiting candidates. After conducting initial interviews of candidates, Bradbury will submit the information they have collected to the library board sometime in April. The interim period is expected to last 3 to 5 months, and Ashton said the plan is to begin interviewing finalists in May. But while all that is going on, the then-former director will be curling up with a good book – first on his list, “SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome.”

“My first catch up book is actually a Christmas gift that I haven’t managed to focus on,” Ashton said. “I got about 100 pages into it, and I’ve been distracted ever since. So, that’s my No. 1.”

Students across state fight for MAP grants State financial aid in limbo after governor vetoes funding bill

The state’s most at-risk students could be in danger of losing the very funds needed to stay in college, thanks to partisan politics and the continued state budget stalemate.

Thousands of Illinois students rely on the Monetary Award Program, or MAP, which provides grants that do not need to be repaid to Illinois residents who attend approved Illinois colleges and demonstrate financial need.

“Two-four-six-eight, we just want to graduate” – a battle cry that has fallen on deaf ears – was shouted by students who attend Lewis University in Romeoville during a rally last month in front of the James R. The House chose to not override the veto. McGuire said the override looked to authorize the governor to make releasing MAP grants a priority.

“The governor rejected this opportunity,” he added. “My work to secure funding for Illinois’ needy students, community colleges and nine public universities will continue.”

that requested the governor sign Senate Bill 2043.

Despite local and statewide efforts, Gov. Bruce Rauner vetoed Senate Bill 2043 and the House opted not to override the decision last week. The measure would have immediately released $168 million to college students in Illinois.

“Gov. Rauner is wrong to make 125,000 low-income college students the latest victims of his avoidance behavior,” state Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, said. “He needs to think about others, stop dodging the obvious and concentrate on negotiating a budget.”

McGuire is chairman of the senate’s higher education committee and sponsored the bill.

He has been an actively fighting to secure MAP funding since the first signs the financial assistance program was in jeopardy.

Rauner has opposed the bill, saying it would only add to the state’s deficit and not solve the problem.

In September, many state universities and community colleges began absorbing costs upfront to allow the school year to start on time.

According to the Illinois Student Assistance Commission, MAP uses a formula to distribute the appropriated funds so that the neediest students receive grant assistance. ISAC is operating on the assumption that the appropriation level would be the same as 201415. However, the state budget that funds MAP has not yet been finalized by the Illinois General Assembly and governor. As a result, it is not known how much funding this program will receive.

Last year alone, the state funded $364.8 million in MAP grants. The average student with a MAP grant receives approximately $2,700 to help pay for tuition.

At Joliet Junior College, nearly 1,000 students may lose the necessary assistance to pursue dreams of higher education.

At JJC, MAP has the largest demographic impact on student financial support and access to education. Based on financial aid records, the school has 945 students with $536,376, in MAP funds applied to their fall accounts.

Because of the budget impasse, JJC applied MAP funds to students’ accounts as pending financial aid, while the college awaits MAP payments from the state.

The college is making its decision to fund MAP on a semester-by-semester basis, and has opted to front more than $1

million in MAP funds for the fall 2015 and spring 2016 semesters.

The college applied $553,000 to student MAP accounts for the fall semester and applied $470,000 to date for the spring 2016 semester.

“It’s imperative that our students have all the tools and support they need toward completion of their academic goals,” said Kelly Rhoder, JJC communications director. “Financial aid is a significant piece of that. Without it, the larger, long-term impact is on our local workforce. We train and educate skilled workers to fill in-demand jobs, we ensure the seamless transfer of students seeking bachelor’s degrees, and so much more.

“People come to JJC to improve their lives, and to have access new opportunities and new experiences. We will continue to do what we can to preserve that.”

In addition, the state’s funding continues to shrink in all areas.

JJC previously reported that since fiscal year 2000, the state’s share of the college’s operating budget has decreased from 18.7 percent to a projected 10 percent in fiscal year 2016.

“Illinois needs to invest in the higher education of its residents in order to get back to full strength,” McGuire said. “Failing to provide the financial aid for which 130,000 students qualified threatens those students, the schools they attend and the future of our state.”

College of DuPage is reportedly managing the loss at this point but does worry how long it will be able to sustain student’s missing MAP awards.

The college’s student newspaper, The Courier, reports that Acting Interim President Joseph Collins believes the college may need to pull extra funding, financial aid will come directly from the college if MAP grants are unavailable.

“The foundation has agreed to help out in terms of any kind of emergencies that come up,” said Collins. “We do have an emergency fund for worst case scenario.

Other schools aren’t in as good of a financial position as we are, and are turning students away because they don’t have the map funding.”

McGuire said he will continue to fight for MAP funding and higher education.

“MAP isn’t about athletics, new buildings, faculty positions, or administrators’ pensions,” said McGuire. “MAP is about the opportunity to learn. It’s about students who want to do more in life for themselves and their state.”

Mayor stresses village’s strong financial standing Martin Tully delivered fifth annual report March 1

Downers Grove Mayor Martin Tully stressed the village’s strong financial standing when he delivered his fifth state of the village address last week.

Tully, who was elected to his second term as mayor in 2015, recapped what he described as a year full of accomplishments, while noting some of the potential obstacles and opportunities in the coming year.

“Downers Grove… is well positioned, is resilient and is poised to not only face challenges but take advantage of opportunities,” Tully said in his 2015 annual report, which he delivered during the March 1 Downers Grove Village Council meeting.

In terms of financial sustainability, the village reaffirmed its AAA bond rating with standards and poors in 2015. The recognition is the highest rating a municipality can receive, and Tully described the AAA rating underscores Downers Grove’s sound financial practices and procedures.

“Just to give you an idea, I don’t

think the state has a bond rating,” Tully joked during the address.

Despite the jest, the state of Illinois’ financial issues are of major concern for the second-term mayor.

Tully said uncertainty over the future of the Local Government Distributive Fund will continue to weigh heavily on the village’s financial planning, even though Gov. Bruce Rauner recent budget proposal did not include a request to lower the municipal share of the state income tax.

Westmont EMA volunteer receives lifetime achievement award Award commemorates Ed Jenkins’ 45 years of service A longtime volunteer with the Westmont Emergency Management Agency was recognized by the village officials last week for his more than four decades of service to the community.

Ed Jenkins received Westmont Fire Department’s first-ever fire department-EMA lifetime achievement award during the Westmont Village Board’s March 3 meeting. The award commemorates his 45 years as a volunteer with the EMA. “We can not thank Ed enough for his outstanding contribution to Westmont,” Fire Chief Dave Weiss said in news release. “Ed has been an important part of our operation for more than four decades.”

Jenkins’ journey started in 1970, when Westmont first began allowing ESDA members and was a vital part in moving Westmont EMA to where it is today, according to the village. Jenkins was instrumental in acquiring light towers and placing an EMA trailer into service for use in emergency situations.

In 2015, Downers Grove reduced its general fund expenses by $700,000 and increased the balance in the general fund by an estimated $1.2 million, according to the mayor. The village also received numerous awards and recognitions for its budget document and presentation, which Tully said only reinforces his belief that Downers Grove is prepared for any unforeseen challenges.

Tully credited these steps to the village staff, his colleagues on the village council, an engaged citizenry and a culture of LEAN. “That’s my acronym for leveraging existing assets neatly,”

he said, adding that staff has been very creative and found ways to maximize village partnerships and stem the tide of rising costs, while maintaining high-quality village services.

Tully said addressing “much needed” facilities upgrades to village hall and the police department remains one of the top priorities in 2016.

“The state of the village of Downers Grove is strong, it is LEAN, it is resilient and it is poised,” he added. “As you’ve seen, we are in good shape financially, and we are well positioned and poised to take advantage of opportunities that will come down the road.”

Create a themed menu routine Another option to make meal planning easy is to have a theme for each day of the week. Themes help narrow down your options, which for me is the biggest challenge of meal planning.

For example, Monday is breakfast for dinner; Tuesday is Mexican; Wednesday is pasta; Thursday is soup; Friday is fish; Saturday is pizza – you get the idea. You could also include a night where family members take turns planning (and maybe even cooking!) dinner.

REPEAT Benet claims second Class 4A state title in as many seasons

NORMAL — The odd quarters weren’t kind to Benet Academy in the Class 4A state championship game at Illinois State University.

The Redwings managed just one basket in the first quarter and trailed Fremd 6-3 after one and were outscored 19-7 in the third quarter as they relinquished the halftime lead and trailed 30-28.

But the even quarters were Benet’s quarters as they outscored the Vikings 32-16 en route to a 4239 win to bring home their second straight state title, beating Fremd both years.

“This is amazing,” Benet junior Katie Jaseckas said. “Everyone has brought so much energy to this team.”

“It is an amazing feeling,” Benet’s Kathleen Doyle said. “I don’t even remember what happened in the fourth quarter.”

The pace wasn’t to the Redwings’ liking in the first quarter as they

managed just three points on a Sami Valentine three-pointer.

“I don’t think we’ve ever scored that few of points in a quarter,” Doyle said. “We just stuck with it and our shots started falling for us.”

The game turned in the second quarter when Katie Jaseckas hit a three-pointer and that was followed by two threes from Doyle and a 12-6 lead.

Benet went out in front 19-8 before settling on a 21-13 lead at the half.

“There is a lot of character here and a lot of tenacity on our team,” Benet coach Joe Kilbride said. “We just played for 32 minutes and showed a lot of grit. I think both teams were a little tight early and maybe a little tired.”

The Vikings roared back in the third quarter and took a 28-26 lead on a basket by Bryana Hopkins, her 10th point of the quarter as they held a 30-28 lead after three quarters.

Downers South falls in regional title tilt

After scoring 20 points in the first half of the regional semifinal against Glenbard East in the Class 4A Glenbard East Regional, the host Rams held Downers Grove South’s Denis Alibegovic to two over the final two periods.

Alibegovic hit his first four three pointers and five in the first half to help Downers South go on a 13-2 run to close out the opening quarter with a 21-10 lead.

However, scoring is not all Alibegovic does for the Mustangs.

The 6-foot, 3-inch junior used defense and passing in the second

half to lead South to a 61-56 win.

“He is one of the best players in the area,” Downers South coach Kris Olson said of Alibegovic. “As much as the guys say this isn’t a bigger game, it is and he is a gamer. He came out and showed what he could do. Then, he had a couple big blocks and some big rebounds. That is the part of his game that is getting lost somewhat. He had some huge, huge helpside blocks from the proper position. Then, yes, they focused on him so much and he didn’t force it, he became a passer.”

Alibegovic understands how to play within himself on the court.

“My teammates got me the ball early and I had open looks and I

took advantage of it,” Alibegovic said. “I got hot quick and they got me the ball and I took advantage of it. Coach always talks about not being just a one dimensional player, so (when they focused on me) I stepped it up on the defensive end and I got some rebounds. I know when they are doing that, I have to focus on finding my open teammates.”

The one who benefitted the most from the attention Alibegovic was getting from the Rams was T.J. Clifford, who tallied 15 points, 13 coming in the second half.

Fremd held a 35-31 lead in the fourth quarter before a Doyle threepointer cut it to one. A Jaseckas free throw tied the score at 35 midway through the fourth.

After a Fremd basket, Doyle hit a step-back three-pointer to give Benet a 38-37 lead with 2:20 left.

A turnover with 1:41 left gave the ball back to Benet, but a missed one-and-one gave the ball back to

Fremd.

But Elise Stout got a deflection and Emma Lyne came away with the steal, giving the ball back to Benet.

A pair of Doyle free throws was followed by a Fremd basket with 27.4 seconds left.

Doyle went 1-of-2 on the ensuing possession and a foul on the rebound sent the Vikings to the line, but missed the 1-and-1.

Stout was then sent to the line and she split a pair, giving Fremd one more chance, but a threepointer was off the mark and a scramble for the loose ball led to the clock expiring.

Doyle finished the game with 24 points and a pair of blocks, while Jaseckas added seven points, seven rebounds and three blocks.

“We were having a hard time scoring the ball,” Kilbride said.

She is a once-in-a-lifetime player.

She is an unbelievable player.”

In an evenly played game, the difference may have come beyond the arc as the Redwings made seven three-pointers to three for

the Vikings.

Last year the Redwings caught the state by surprise as they dominated the postseason en route to the state title.

After losing two double-digit scorers from last year, they shocked the state again, this time needing multiple close wins in the playoffs to repeat.

“I think it is more fun to do it when nobody expects you to,” Doyle said.

“We did it last year and we did it again this year. We don’t care about the rankings or what everyone says about us. We came down here and won state championships and that speaks for itself.”

Clifford is working on being even tougher to guard as he is

taking his game to the threepoint line as well. While he didn’t connect on any of his attempts, his willingness to shoot the three makes him more of a threat to opponents.

“I have been working on getting outside more because I know I am quick enough to get past guys if they come out,” Clifford said.

“When I shoot them, they have to respect it and it opens up my

game.”

In the regional final, the Mustangs fell 74-55 to Hinsdale South in what was the fourth meeting between the two teams this season.

Talk to parents about the economics of life insurance Dear Dave, My boyfriend is wondering if he should buy life insurance for his mom and dad. They’re both in their 70s, and they’re no longer married to each other. His mom is disabled and remarried, and she doesn’t have any life insurance coverage.

The only coverage his dad may have would be through his employer.

He’s afraid he would have to pay funeral expenses if one of them died, and he’s not in good enough shape financially to do that right now. What’s your advice?

Cherie Dear Cherie, If the only insurance his dad may have is furnished through his employer, then yeah, when he stops working he probably won’t have life insurance anymore. It would be fine if he wanted to buy them each a small policy, but it’s going to be very expensive at their age. He would have to get them to sign off on it, and they’d also have to be healthy enough to have a policy issued.

This isn’t a good long-term plan, however.

As a long-term plan, I’d tell your boyfriend that he needs to build up his own wealth. If he had $15,000 to $20,000 in savings, that’s more than enough to bury two people. I don’t mean to sound insensitive, but we’re talking about the economics involved in this kind of situation.

You can have a nice funeral for as little as $5,000.

Pausing the baby steps to celebrate?

Dear Dave, My wife and I are in Baby Step 2 of your plan, and we’ve got our 20th wedding anniversary coming up in a few months. We had always planned on taking a 10-day luxury trip to celebrate, but now that we’re trying to get out of debt it seems pretty unrealistic. Should we pause the Baby Steps and celebrate like we originally planned, or would it be better to concentrate on paying off debt?

Don Dear Don, If it were me, I’d want to pause and celebrate in a smaller way.

Bookstore chain opens new Downers Grove store Half Price Books celebrates 10th Chicago location with ‘Books for a Year’ giveaway

In the last decade, the neighborhood bookstore has gone the way of the iPod – that’s to say, most people download music and books directly to their smartphones.

But one bookstore chain is bucking that trend, opening its 10th Chicagoland location in as many years. Half Priced Books opened a new location in Downers Grove last week, with almost 200 people braving cold temperatures to be first in line for a slew of grand opening deals and giveaways at the store.

“The Chicago area is a wonderful place full of many great booklovers,” said Kathy Doyle Thomas, executive vice president and chief strategy officer for Half Price Books. “We are thrilled to have our 10th store in the area in Downers Grove and are excited to be a part of this community.”

The new store, located at 1328 Butterfield Road, celebrated its official grand opening by offering free tote bags and $5 gift cards to the first 100 people to visit the store Thursday through Sunday. One lucky shopper each of those days also won a $100 gift card.

Additionally, customers in the store were able to enter to win a $500 Half Price Books gift card, which could buy a lot at a store known for its deals.

Anicka said the company took a lot of things into consideration before opening the Downers Grove location, including where existing customers are coming from, education and population density.

“Downers Grove has everything we look for in a market, so we were thrilled when our development team found this great location for us,” she said.

“Our profits don’t rise and fall based on a highly-anticipated book coming out,” she explained, adding that the popularity of e-readers has waned and books are making a comeback. “There are signs showing readers are returning to printed books, or becoming hybrid readers.”

Half Price Books will open at 9 a.m. each day. The store offers new and used books, magazines, comics, records, cassettes, videos, CDs, DVDs and collectible items.
