Lisle-Woodridge Fire District Papa’s Pizza wins big earns ‘Run of the Year’ District personnel were recognized for care they provided to a patient who was initially treated for an allergic reaction to medication Edward Hospital awarded its 2017 EMS (Emergency Medical Services) “Run of the Year” to the Lisle-Woodridge Fire District – Medic 2 and Ladder 53.

Fire District personnel were recognized for care they provided to a patient who was initially treated for an allergic reaction to medication, but whom paramedics noticed was exhibiting symptoms of a heart attack. After being taken to Edward Hospital, it was discovered one of the patient’s coronary arteries was 100 percent blocked. Following treatment that included

the placement of a stent to keep the artery open, the patient left the hospital a few days later.

Those honored at a recent breakfast and ceremony at Edward Hospital included Lt. Jim Kensel, Firefighter/Medics Aaron Conrad, Eric Fitzpatrick and Michael Rohlicek, and Emergency Medical Technician Dave Fazio.

The event capped off the yearlong “Run of the Quarter” program in which area paramedics are honored for exceptional ambulance runs. In the “Run of the Quarter” program, the Edward

EMS Team reviews ambulance runs by pre-hospital providers and selects one to be recognized every three months based on the following criteria: • Excellent communication from the field that resulted in the timely delivery of pertinent clinical information to the Edward Emergency Department staff • Clear and thorough documentation • Superior clinical assessment skills that resulted in accurate recognition of a clinical situation • Behavior exceeding the call of duty in the field • Superior partnership and teamwork with Edward Hospital

Papa’s Pizza in Woodridge earns best pizza at District 99 Fifth Annual Pizza Wars

Last week the District 99 Education Foundation hosted their Pizza Wars fundraiser at South High in Downers Grove. A record of more than 650 guests attended the fifth annual event.

Ticket sales and sponsorship proceeds support District 99 students through innovative teacher grants and student scholarships.

Guests voted on their favorite pizza in three categories and the winners were: Best Crust - Lou Malnati’s; Best Sauce Nancy’s Pizza; and Best Overall - Papa’s Pizza. A total of eight pizza vendors donated an estimated 240 pizzas and provided

25 staff for the event. The pizza vendors included: Nancy’s Pizza (Woodridge), Papa’s Pizza Place (Woodridge), Tortorice’s Pizzeria (Downers Grove), NY Pizza Pie (Downers Grove), L&F Pizza (Westmont), Woodgrain Neapolitan Pizzeria (Westmont), Lou Malnati’s Pizza (Downers Grove) and Skuddlebutt’s Pizza (Downers Grove).

Forum focuses on crimes against women, kids Responding to crimes against women, children focus of forum

Many women and children who face the threat of domestic violence are overcome by fear, as they look to carry out their lives and rid themselves of unhealthy relationships.

The process, alone, is traumatizing for individuals to undergo.

This became the topic of discussion Feb. 24 for the League of Women Voters of Downers Grove, Woodridge and Lisle, who turned to the community to host a presentation/public forum called, “Crimes Against Women & Children: A Community Response.”

The event, held at the Lincoln Center, brought in a number of people, including representatives from DuPage County and the Village of Downers Grove.

Featured speakers were Nyla Whitehead, prevention educator for Family Shelter Service; Colleen Zavodny, coordinator of advocacy and crisis intervention for YWCA Metropolitan Chicago; and Congressman Bill Foster (D-11).

Whitehead referenced a number of common tactics, such as not allowing access to familial finances and using denial, in which people go to when engaging in an abusive relationship.

“It’s not just teens that do this, and it’s not just guys that do a lot of these tactics to girls,” Whitehead said. “I want to be very fair and acknowledge that.”

Another tactic of note involves getting an individual to try to drop the charges one is looking to press against their abuser.

“Now, in Illinois, the state picks that up, so that those charges cannot be dropped,” Whitehead said.

Common myths about domestic violence are that the abuser needs anger management, the couple needs couples/marriage counseling, someone provoked it, and it happens only in certain neighborhoods.

Whitehead negated the perceived truths in such scenarios and said the first and most important thing to do in such a situation is to hear out the individual whose been

abused.

Other ways to assist an individual whose been abused is to educate, let them leave, and plan for safety.

Whitehead said it’s important to be careful when looking to get an individual to escape an abusive relationship.

“Actually, a partner’s chances of dying go up 75 percent, once they say that ‘I’m going to leave,’” she said. “Don’t use it as a threat. It’s not going to work.”

Zavodny said the difference between what she and Whitehead are doing is that she is more involved in first response in the community, rather than prevention education.

“I’m networking with our hospitals, making sure that they’re calling us, making sure that they’re in compliance with Sexual Assault Survivor Emergency Treatment Act,” She said. “I’m working with our law enforcement, making sure that they are trained on what we affectionately in the sexual assault world know is [the Sexual Assault Incident Procedure Act], a great piece of legislation the State of Illinois has that changes the way that victims and law enforcement interact and changes the amount of time that evidence collection kits are held.”

services, and safety net programs.

“I cannot tell you how many times we have had disclosures from young boys,” Zavodny said. “I cannot tell you how many times I have responded to a call for a rape that occurred for a DuPage County inmate, and it was a male victim. We do not only serve women, and our services do not only serve women.

We serve everyone.”

Under the umbrella of sexual violence is sexual harassment, assault/rape, intimate violence, and child sexual abuse.

“It is all based on power and control,” Zavodny said.

Sexual harassment has made local and national headlines in recent months, with the spread of the #MeToo movement.

Zavodny said it’s important to know where to draw the line, how to talk about consent in healthy relationships, and when people can give consent legally.

“I do have to say that in the State of Illinois, we do have some fairly progressive laws for sexual assault survivors, and we’ve increased the amount of laws that we’ve had to ensure that victims have their right to safety and have the right to a successful prosecution, if it goes that way,” Zavodny said.

Zavodny wanted it to be clear that we do not talk to children enough about consent and we do not educate children enough about

consent.

Zavodny has been working in the DuPage County for nearly a decade. She took time to go over some data pertinent to the area.

Zavodny said the YWCA is out in the community a lot.

Last year, YWCA served 164 people bedside at a hospital for a total of almost 500 hours. In the criminal justice system, they served 111 clients last year for a total of 252 hours. YWCA had 135 clients who received crisis intervention from the center, and they had 88 clients in counseling for a total of more 1,500 hours.

“Our community response is good, but it always needs to be better,” Zavodny said. “The fact that Advocate Good Samaritan just

trained three nurses for the sexual assault nurse examiners certification is an outstanding bonus for our community. The fact that we do not have sexual assault nurse examiners at every single one of our hospitals in DuPage County is a deficit to survival in the community.”

Zavodny gave kudos to the people who drove State of Illinois’ legislation on sexual assault to this point.

Foster said it is not okay to normalize such behaviors and people have to recognize that.

“This is not going to be cured in one generation,” he said. “It’s one of those things where the only reason that society gets better is that every generation behaves a little better.”

Lincoln pivotal in securing Springfield as state capital

BY KATE SCHOTT OF THE STATE JOURNALREGISTER When state lawmakers head to the Capitol to do the people’s business, they travel to Sp r i n g f i e l d .

But that wasn’t always the case.

Springfield became the state’s third capital city in 1839. And the story of how Springfield became the capital is a tall tale … well, it’s a tale with an outcome scripted by nine tall men.

Illinois has been governed from three cities and six buildings (one that was rented and five that were owned by the state), as told in an article in the 1975-76 edition of the legislative Illinois Blue Book. Kaskaskia was the first state capital after Illinois was admitted to the union in 1818, with the 29 House members and 14 senators in the first General Assembly of Illinois working in a rented two-story brick building at a cost of $4 per day.

Yet by December 1820, the second General Assembly was meeting in a new building in a new capital city, Vandalia, which was a more central location within the state’s original 16 southern counties. Lawmakers agreed Vandalia would remain the capital city for at least the next 20 years.

But it didn’t take long for many Illinois lawmakers - including a young state legislator who would go on to become the nation’s 16th president - to cite location as they began petitioning for the capital to be moved again. The argument this time for relocating was that the capital should be closer to the geographical center of the state.

In 1833 the General Assembly decided to ask voters, via the next general election, to weigh in on where the capital should be, according to the Blue Book history. Vandalia, Jacksonville, Springfield, Peoria, Alton and the state’s actual geographical center were the options. Although Alton emerged with a slim majority, the results were ruled inconclusive.

The idea of moving the capital continued to percolate, with talk put into action during the 1836-37 legislative session when Abraham Lincoln intro-

duced legislation that would move the capital to Springfield. He had the backing of eight legislative colleagues of the Whig Party who were called the Long Nine, as their aggregate height was 54 feet, according to the history provided in the 1975-76 Blue Book.

An opponent to Springfield as the new location was a legislative foe Lincoln knew well; Stephen A. Douglas, who also was serving in the General Assembly and wanted Jacksonville to be the state capital. And the people of Vandalia weren’t about to give up easily: They built a new brick statehouse in an attempt to keep the legislature where it was.

That effort was for naught, as after four balloting attempts Springfield received the majority of votes needed to move the state capital. There have been allegations over the years that the Long Nine traded favors in order for Springfield to emerge triumphant, although Sen. Paul Simon in his book “Lincoln’s Preparation for Greatness” disputed that notion. Regardless of how the decision came to pass, state government began operating in Springfield by the end of 1839.

Work began in 1837 on a new Capitol building on the Springfield Town Square, with the first Capitol building providing room for the state House and Senate, the governor and other elected officials, as well as housing the Illinois Supreme Court, according to the book “A. Lincoln: His Illinois,” published by The State Journal-Register in 2008.

As the state’s population grew, so too

did its government, and within a few decades a bigger building was needed to accommodate the elected officials.

Construction began on the current Capitol building in 1868 and was finished in 1888, although lawmakers moved in about halfway through the construction process. The first building, now known as the Old State Capitol, remains and is often used for reenactments, performances, rallies and political speeches.

As the state’s capital, Springfield has witnessed some of the most important political moments in Illinois history. It’s where Lincoln gave his “House Divided” speech, in which he condemned slavery. Almost 150 years later, it’s where Barack Obama announced in 2007 he was running for president of the United States.

Of course, it’s also where four governors who later went to prison on various charges served as chief executive of the state. And as long as Springfield remains Illinois’ capital city, it will continue to be where some of the most politically important decisions about Illinois are made.

The key ingredient for success, for Benet Academy head coach Gene Heidkamp’s, Redwings, has carried the Redwings to a 24-4 record, heading into their Class 4A Addison Trail Regional Championship Game, with Naperville Central on Friday night.

With 1:34 left in the first quarter, Benet’s 6-foot-4 Will Engels and 6-foot-8 Colin Crothers, were on the bench with two fouls. The Redhawks of Naperville Central, were already in the bonus and leading 16-9.

The vaunted Redwing defense was hamstrung by a very tightly officiated first quarter.

After one quarter, Naperville Central (20-10) led 18-11.

Not to worry.

Led by an entire team effort, over the next two and a half quarters, the Redwings would transform an 18-11 deficit, into a 53-37

lead with 3:37 left. Benet Academy (25-4) would wrap up its 16th consecutive victory, by a 62-49 score.

In the second and third quarter, the vaunted Redwing defense forced 12 Redhawk turnovers and gave up just 13 points, six of them

Trailing 25-23 at halftime, the Redwings were led by 6-foot-4 senior David Buh (16 points, nine rebounds, five assists, three steals) and would outscore the Redhawks 16-6 in the third quarter to lead 39-31. Buh would pick up eight points, hand out three assists and pick up three steals, in the third quarter, alone.

“Coach (Heidkamp) told us at halftime to pick up our defense,” Buh said. “In the second half, we ran our offense to perfection. My teammates were able to get me the ball in position, to go the basket and score.”

“It’s really sweet to win this regional championship,” Petrovic said. “It’s huge for the program.

I was fortunate to hit my shots and I just played, tonight. Coach (Heidkamp) told us at halftime to pick up our intensity and play better defense. We did,” The play of 6-foot-5 sophomore Shane O’Mara (seven points) and 6-foot-7 junior Noah Ferrell ( seven points), replacing the foultroubled, Crothers ( four points, two rebounds), was essential to the Redwing win.

“Colin and Noah, in practice everyday, help me to perform well,” O’Mara said. “To go up against a great player, like Ben Wolfe and play well, is rewarding. It’s great! It’s beautiful to win the regional championship. We will be ready on Tuesday night.”

“With Colin (Crothers) and Will (Engels) in foul trouble, I had to step up,” Ferrell said. “I had to help my seniors, get this win. They have all worked too hard, to have our season end tonight.”

As in Tuesday’s win over Downers Grove South, the Redwing “dynamic duo” of Buh and Engels, offensively took over the game, in the second half. Against DGS ,the duo scored 26 of the Redwings 32 second half points.

On Friday night they settled for 24 of the Redwings 39 second half points. Even with most of the game on the bench with foul troubles, Engels would score 12 points, eight of them in the crucial fourth quarter.

“This was a huge win for us,” Engels said. “In the first half we had our worst defensive, performance of the year. The turning point of the game was the outstanding defense we played in the second half. We have had trouble in the past at the free throw line at the end of games. We have been really working at that in practice and it paid off tonight.”

The Redwings nailed 17 of 18 of their free-throws in the fourth quarter. During one stretch, Engels (six) and Buh (four) scored 10 consecutive Redwing points, from the free-throw line.

Senior Jake Ronneberg, nailed two clutch free-throws, in the fourth quarter and the alwayssteady Ben Cooney, picked up three huge Redwing steals.

ter defense. Naperville Central exploited us in the first quarter,” Heidkamp said. “We played better defense in the second quarter and outstanding defense , in the second half.”

“This was really a team victory.

I am so proud of this group. We get contributions from everyone, Noah gave us huge minutes and scores and Shane solidified us on defense. He did a great job on Wolf.”

A game earlier, defeated No. 15 Downers Grove South With 4:55 left in the game, Mustang senior Pat Shaughnessy (11 points, four rebounds, steal) tied the game at 43-43, with a floater in the lane. Benet senior David Buh (15 points, five rebounds) answered with a driving lay-in, off the glass, to give the Redwings a 45-43 lead they would not relinquish, with 4:33 left.

Buh, who scored 12 of his 15 points in the second half and six in the crucial fourth quarter, made one of two free throws. for a 46-43 lead with3:53 left.

Mustang junior guard, Justin Eagins, who tied Benet’s Will Engels, for game-high honors, with 21 points, scored to pull the Mustangs within 46-45, with 3:46 left.

The play of the game was next.

Buh misfired on a three-pointer and the 6-foot-3 Engels, soared over his 6-foot-8 teammate, Colin Crothers, for the huge tip in, to give the Redwings a 48-45 lead, with 2:40 left The Redwings would make 12 out of 15 free throws in the last 2:40, to win going away, 5947, including six by Redwing sixth man, instant-offense, senior Jake Ronneberg.

“We are a very balanced team,” Engels said. “On any night, any one of us could have a big night scoring. Tonight the shots were there for Dave and I in the second half and we were able to knock them down.”

Engels and Buh, would score 26 of the Redwings 32 second half points, after the Redwings led 2723, at halftime. Benet was led by senior Jake Petrovic, who scored all eight of his points in the first half. Eagins, buried three of his four three-pointers and scored 13 first half points, to keep the Mustangs close.

“We did not want our season to end,” Eagins said. “We played hard and just fell a little a little short.

In the last minute of the third quarter, Buh would score on another basket off the glass.

Shaughnessy would nail a pair of free throws and then Engels would bury another three, for a 41-36 Redwing lead, after three quarters “As a team in the second half, collectively, we wanted to be more

aggressive going to the basket,” Buh said. “Our shots were not falling and the game had dictated, that I had to be more aggressive, to score and help us pull the game out.”

“We came out as a team and knew Benet was the No. 2 seed and we really wanted to pull off the upset,” Shaughnessy. “We played our hearts out and played our best game of the year. We were very young this year and I personally think we had a great season.”

Crothers and 6-foot-7 Noah Ferrell, combined for nine points and seven rebounds in the center position, for Benet.

The Redwings improve to 24-4 and will look for their 16th consecutive win on Friday night at 7 against Wednesday’s winner between Naperville Central (19-9) and Glenbard West (15-11), in the Class 4A Addison Trail Regional Championship game.

“Downers Grove South would not go away,” Benet Academy Head Coach Gene Heidkamp said.

“I give them a lot of credit and they played an outstanding game

tonight. We knew they were going to give us everything they had and they did.”

‘We made a number of key stops in the game and hit our free throws to pull away at the end. David (Buh) and Will (Engels), showed great poise down the stretch. David had some great power moves to the basket and Will also made some huge plays for us, too.”

Control your destiny with retirement savings DEAR DAVE, I’ve been following your plan, and I’m ready to start investing.

Do employer contributions count toward the 15 percent you recommend putting into retirement?

BRENDA DEAR BRENDA, Investing 15 percent of your income in retirement accounts is Baby Step 4 of my plan. That means you’ve already paid off all your debt, except for your home, and you’ve increased your $1,000 beginner’s emergency fund to a fully-funded emergency fund of three to six months of expenses.

Way to go!

I want you to control your destiny, so employer contributions do not count toward the 15 percent I recommend setting aside for retirement. The first thing you should put money into is a matching retirement account. If you’ve got access to a 401(k) — and your employer offers a match — you should do that up to the match before anything else.

It’s nice if your company will match up to a certain point, but chances are that will still mean you’ve got some work to do. To make up the remainder, you could look at a Roth IRA. Then if the Roth, plus what you invested previously to get the match doesn’t equal 15 percent, you could see

about a 403(b) or go back to your 401(k) to complete the 15 percent.

DEAR DAVE, My mother wants everything, except for her home, left to my brother and I when she dies. She would like her long-time boyfriend to have her house. We don’t have a problem with this, but it has not been written into her will.

Her mind is still sound, so does she need to officially update the will?

DAWN DEAR DAWN, Yes, the will needs to be changed to reflect her wishes where the house is concerned. Since she’s still able to make decisions independently, the will should be legally updated to reflect exactly what she wants to have happen

with every piece of her estate.

It’s fine if she wants to give her boyfriend the house. It’s your mom’s will, and her estate, so she can do pretty much whatever she wants. She could also leave what’s called a life estate that says her boyfriend gets use of the home while he’s alive. Technically, in this kind of situation the house would be left to you, but he would legally have use of it during his life. Upon his death, the home could then revert to you or your brother.
