New principal named for Meadowview Neylon has 24 years of experience in education and has been with Woodridge 68 since 2004 At the regular meeting on March 20 the Woodridge School District 68 Board of Education unanimously appointed Dr. Kelly Neylon as the new principal of Meadowview Elementary School, effective July 1, 2017.

Neylon has 24 years of experience in education and has been with Woodridge 68 since 2004, where she started as a special education teacher at Meadowview.

She is currently the Gifted Coordinator for the district and Instructional Resource Specialist at Thomas Jefferson Junior High.

Throughout her time in the district, Neylon has been a part of the development of numerous curriculums and planned and implemented professional learning for the district.

She has worked with teachers as a coach and with principals on school improvement teams.

She gained additional administrative-level experience as the building assistant while at Mead-

owview. Kelly began her career as a general education and special education teacher in Center Cass School District 66 in Downers Grove.

“Having worked with Kelly for the past 13 years, I have witnessed her educational expertise and development as an instructional leader. She has been and will continue to be a real asset to Meadowview and the district,” says Dr. Cathy Skinner, Woodridge 68 Superintendent of Schools.

“In selecting Dr. Neylon as the new principal at Meadowview, we have selected a person who lives and breathes cutting-edge instruction, continuous growth and life-long learning,” says Patrick Broncato, Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Administrative Services. “We are excited to have her return to Meadowview as an integral part of its pursuit of excellence for students, staff and community.”

Dr. Neylon has a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership from National Louis University, Master of Science in Special Education from Northern Illinois University, and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Northern Illinois University.

“I’m honored and humbled to have been chosen to serve the community of Woodridge as the principal of Meadowview.

Since beginning my career in Woodridge, I’ve grown as an educator with the help of the district,” says Neylon. “I am excited to begin working with the students, families and staff of Meadowview and the district administrative team in this new capacity!”

Kelly lives in Lisle with her husband, Marty, and two children, Chelsea and Luke.

New administrator at Jefferson Junior High Dr. Patrick McGuire joins Woodridge District 68 with over 13 years of experience in education At the regular meeting on March 20, the Woodridge School District 68 Board of Education unanimously appointed Dr. Patrick McGuire as the new associate principal of Thomas Jefferson Junior High School, effective July 1, 2017. Dr. McGuire will take over for associate principal Justin Warnke who has been selected as the new principal at Jefferson.

McGuire joins Woodridge District 68 with over 13 years of experience in education and comes to us from St. Charles Community Unit School District 303, where he spent most of his career teaching students in grades 5-8.

He has served as an active school improvement (SIP) team member at both middle and elementary school levels, facilitator of professional development during faculty

meetings and SIP/institute days, and collaborator in new literacy and social studies curriculum development. He gained additional administrative-level experience while at CUSD 303 as a summer school principal for two years.

McGuire began his career with Elgin Area School District U46 as a third grade teacher.

“I am very excited that Patrick McGuire will be joining the Jefferson administrative team,” says Warnke. “His knowledge of educational technology, curriculum and instruction, and student centered approach to teaching will make him a valuable asset to our school and district. Patrick’s strengths will play a critical role in our future plans to help students maximize their individual growth and potential as learners.”

Dr. McGuire earned a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Curriculum & Instruction from Aurora University, Master of Arts in General Education from Judson University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Judson University.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to work with the students, staff, and parents of Jefferson Junior High School and be a part of the Woodridge 68 community. I look forward to continuing to learn and grow in my new leadership role,” says McGuire.

Patrick lives in Elgin with his wife, Jennifer, and young daughter McKenzie.

Council to begin negotiations with developer ‘The apartments are simply the best fiscal solution’

The Downers Grove Village Council continues to weigh the advantages and disadvantages to a series of redevelopment agreements set to assist them in improving the facilities for village hall and the police station.

In a 4-3 vote at their March 21 meeting, officials took action to authorize the start of negotiations regarding a proposed townhome development.

Commissioners Marge Earl, Greg Hose and Bob Barnett cast the dissenting votes.

This measure, as is, does not bind the village to the townhome proposal. Other developments to be considered include plans for an apartment complex and a medical office building.

The matter was last discussed during the village’s Coffee with the Council event on March 18.

Commissioner Greg Hose recognizes that officials may have four good proposals to consider and said still, he will not support a proposal that isn’t a good investment for the taxpayers and their dollars.

“The point of this process, I thought, was to come up with a creative way to solve our facilities problems without putting taxpayers on the hook for the cost,” he said. “Instead of that, now we’re

looking at increasing taxes to pay for at least 20 years of bonds. While the feedback I’ve been getting is that at least a few residents are OK with this, even though it goes against what I thought was the primary goal of fixing the money pit problem without raising the taxes.”

Hose said he doesn’t think residents have been given the full context of the total impact of moving ahead.

“We already have a million dollar budget hole for 2017,” he said.

“We’re three months into the year.

That’s just to cover costs for current village operations.”

Commissioner William White recognizes the pros and cons to each proposal and said there’s one particular development that stands apart from the pact.

“The apartments are simply the best fiscal solution,” White said.

“My own calculation shows that the present value of the apartment proposal would generate approximately $24 million in value for the taxpayers. I calculate that the townhome solution would generate about $10 million of value for taxpayers. DuPage Medical would generate about $7,500,000 for the taxpayers.”

White recognizes that he’s getting a lot of feedback from constituents saying the village should pursue the medical office building and said he sees a number of draw-

backs to that proposal. The townhome proposal would serve as the next best solution, he said.

“There’s upfront risk that perhaps, [the townhomes] all won’t be built out straight away, but I’m less confident given the national state of healthcare that the healthcare industry won’t experience substantial changes in the next 10, 15 or 20 years. There’s members of U.S. Congress that want to repeal Medicare right now, and that would cause a significant change in the healthcare industry.”

Graham Mosey, of Downers Grove, chairman of the Downtown Downers Grove Management Corporation, expressed his concern for the redevelopment effort.

“It seems to me that we’ve got a lot high-density going on at the moment in the downtown, in particular,” Mosey said. “I think it’s time to kind of take our foot off the gas in terms of the downtown. The reason that downtown Downers Grove is vital is because of the businesses. The businesses are what bring people wanting to come to the downtown and what make people want to live in the village.”

Mosey said he supports the council if they choose to move forward with the proposed medical office building.

“Look at what Good [Samaritan Medical Center] has just done with the heart center,” Mosey said. “Those things aren’t getting smaller, they’re getting larger, and they’re getting larger because

there’s more of a demand. So, a medical facility in our downtown would be an incredible opportunity long-term because it’s not going to go away. There’s going to be unfortunately, more customers as we age and we’re getting into those needs… the population is growing.

They have to have somewhere to go.

“There’s no doubt we need a police station, we need a better facility for the village.

Sue Farley, also of Downers Grove, said what concerns her is the traffic in the downtown area.

“I have … lived in Downers [Grove] since 1983,“ she said. “[I’ve] seen a lot of changes—good, bad.

My concern in reading this whole program is that one area that says, ‘Washington Avenue crossing: preliminary.’ I’ve not seen anything in the [village’s redevelopment proposals] to explain what any of the options would being doing with the pedestrian or traffic.”

Farley said she doesn’t think the village is looking into this concern as much as they should.

“I think the medical building would have better control—the lack of traffic on the weekends, offhours would be better for the community,” Farley said. “Because if you want to do things in the downtown, like, on the weekends, you

wouldn’t have all this condense people and cars.”

Rich Kulovany, of Downers Grove, said he supports the village’s effort if they look to pursue the development of new townhomes.

“Even though I support transitoriented developments and adding residents to support downtown businesses, I feel it would be prudent to allow… the other four [existing] condos and apartments complexes to actually come on line to let us really experience what the results would be from traffic, density, parking and things of that nature,” he said.

Kulovany said he feels the village should take action sooner rather than later.

“The village council spent all of last spring discussing the options for this building and the building next door,” he said. “You’ve been talking about this approach since January [and] the public meetings since the end of February.”

Mayor Martin Tully recognized that village officials hold differing views on this matter and said the most fiscally irresponsible thing they could do is to do nothing.

“That’s been happening since 2005,” he said. “That would be the biggest colossal failure to this community is if we did nothing, and that I will not allow.”

Deep State hasn’t gone away Point of democracy is to empower public interest, which means public must be aware

BY ROBERT C. KOEHLER TRIBUNE CONTENT AGENCY “In a statement to WikiLeaks, the source details policy questions that they say urgently need to be debated in public . . .”

Let me interrupt this quote from the world’s declassifier in chief, regarding its latest release of impertinent, humiliating and shocking data about the American security state, simply to absorb this statement of the obvious: There is an urgent need for public debate - ongoing public debate - not simply about this or that new revelation gifted to the world by an anonymous whistleblower, but about the very fact that “national security” is a game played in secret, against a mysterious, shape-shifting array of “adversaries.”

Does this game have anything at all to do with either the nation’s security or the safety and stability of the whole planet? Whose interests does it serve?

How does secrecy mesh with accountability?

The WikiLeaks statement, from a press release last week, goes on: “. . . including whether the CIA’s hacking capabilities exceed its mandated powers and the problem of public oversight of the agency.

The source wishes to initiate a public debate about the security, creation, use, proliferation and democratic control of cyberweapons.”

The essence of this latest leak is that the CIA has a “malware arsenal” that allows it, as the Washington Post reports, “to steal data from iPhones, seize control of Microsoft-powered computers or even make internetconnected Samsung television sets secretly function as microphones.”

And this creates “a breach that is likely to cause immediate damage to the CIA’s efforts to gather intelligence overseas and place new strain on the U.S. government’s relationship with Silicon Valley giants, including Apple and Google.”

The problem with the stories I’ve read thus far on this latest leak is the same problem I see in most mainstream reporting about U.S. military and security operations: a virtually total lack of context, combined with

BY ROBERT C. KOEHLER TRIBUNE CONTENT AGENCY vague and evasive terminology and a quietly lurking, unquestioned sense of moral superiority in relation to the rest of the world. The institutions of American dominance mostly get a free pass from the media to do what they do, and their annual budgets never provoke the question “Where will the money come from?”

This is what former Republican congressional aide Mike Lofgren has called the Deep State, a term describing a private-public governing consensus - on war, on money - that is beyond the reach of democracy and not subject to public debate . . . unless a whistleblower somewhere, in collusion with WikiLeaks or a journalist, releases data that makes a debate unavoidable.

Fascinatingly, this concept, or a trivialized version thereof, is all over the media right now, thanks to Donald Trump and his acolytes, such as Iowa Republican Congressman Steve King, who just generated a surge of controversy over his idiotic tweet, “We can’t restore our civilization with somebody else’s babies.”

But America’s troubles aren’t limited to dark-skinned foreigners and their offspring. King also recently discussed another bogeyman Trump is in the process of confronting: “We are talking about the emergence of a Deep State led by Barack Obama, and that is something we should prevent,” he said. “The person who understands this best is Steve Bannon, and I would think that he’s advocating to make some moves to fix it.”

And suddenly the Deep State is reduced to a conspiracy theory: a farright joke in a tinfoil hat, to be dismissed with utter contempt.

For instance: “The problem in Washington is not a Deep State; the problem is a shallow man - an untruthful, vain, vindictive, alarmingly erratic president,” New Yorker editor David Remnick tells us, proclaiming in no uncertain terms: “There is no Deep State.”

And there you have it. Remnick’s certainty allows Liberal America to devote all its attention to opposing Trump. Oh, if only he were right!

If only we lived in such a country, which has made only this one mistake, of quasi-electing a lying, tweeting billionaire to its highest office, but otherwise has waged its wars and conducted its surveillance and made its money and forged its global dominance with integrity.

Lofgren himself, in a recent interview with Nafeez Ahmed, described the Deep State with far more complexity: not as the clearly defined, imaginary entity that both Remnick and King reduced it to, but rather as an organic, fluctuating convergence of powerful interests, including Trump’s.

“It’s a series of coalitions of people and it’s not a conspiracy. . . . It’s a series of interlocking interest groups who coalesce the same way people with power, money and influence always gravitate to one another. Adam Smith said 225 years ago or more that there’s never a meeting among businessmen, a private meeting that takes place, but that sooner or later they get involved in some conspiracy against the public interest.”

The ever-forming Deep State, in other words, is a natural phenomenon, held in place not by some secret dictator’s orders but by common interests, which generate groupthink.

Those who benefit from it, even minimally, rarely question it, no matter what course of action it pursues.

“The Deep State,” Ahmed wrote, “is the overarching structure that overrides democratic process to determine policies, meaning that the twoparty system offers little meaningful change of course from administration to administration.”

The whole point of a democracy is to empower the public interest, which means that the public must be aware of the Deep State and hold it continually accountable.

While Lofgren is adamant that there’s more to it than the militaryindustrial consensus and the pursuit of endless war, this to me is by far its most troubling aspect.

Let’s not give it any peace.

Benet’s Katie Jaseckas is 2017 Voyager Media Girls Basketball Player of the Year

During Benet Academy’s backto-back state title runs in 2015 and 2016, much of the attention was givn to the guard play on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball.

With guards like Kathleen Doyle leading the way, Benet was known its full court press as well as ability to shoot from the perimeter.

One of the biggest reasons the Redwings had that luxury was the play of Katie Jaseckas.

Jaseckas, the 6-foot, 1-inch, Truman State-bound center, leaves the program as its all-time leader in rebounds (741) and second in blocked shots (209). It was that play that allows the guards to shoot threes, knowing Jaseckas would be there for the rebound and apply pressure knowing if a team beat the press, they had her guarding the rim.

press for the past three seasons,” said Benet coach Joe Kilbride.

“She is one of the best shot blockers and rebounders in the school’s history and has been the starting center for Benet teams that have compiled a 94-11 record in her three full seasons on varsity.”

This season, Jaseckas averaged 12 points, 8 rebounds, 2.2 blocks and 1.9 steals per game and led Benet to a 28-5 record and a sectional title. For those accomplishments, she has been named the 2017 Voyager Media girls basketball Player of the Year.

Jaseckas was also named to the East Suburban Catholic Conference team, was all-tournament at the Montini Holiday Tournament and was the Most Valuable Player at the Naperville North Holiday Tournament. She was also named to the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association second team all-state.

With talent surrounding her all three years of her career, Jaseckas knew she didn’t have to bear the

entire load. But when the playoffs came, she wanted to.

“In the playoffs, I knew I didn’t want to go home,” she said. “I knew I had to do whatever it took.

All year, we always knew someone would pick up the slack. If I wasn’t having a good game, I would just do the dirty work like get a rebound and pass the ball to whoever was hot.”

She said that while the championships were a great bonus, he time at Benet was not all about the wins.

“I couldn’t have asked for anything more amazing than the teams I have had and the ride that I had at Benet,” Jaseckas said. “Coach Kilbride made it a phenomenal program. I just love spending time with my team.

Winning state two years in a row and this year we won the sectional and had so much fun. This year after we lost, on the ride home, we cried and then we had a dance party on the bus because it was our last time together.”

BROOKLYN BACHMANN MINOOKA Senior averaged an area-best 20.9 points per game, along with 3.5 rebounds.

She ended her career as the alltime leader in points in school history with 1,523.

Was named to the All-Southwest Prairie Conference team and was Class 3A/4A IBCA all-state honorable mention. She will attend Bemidji State University in Minnesota.

SAM GALANOPOULOS NILES WEST Sophomore was the starting point guard for the Wolves.

She averaged 17.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.8 steals and 3.3 assists per game. She scored more than 30 points in a game 3 times this season. She made the Central Suburban South All Conference team and was also on the York Thanksgiving and Nazareth Holi-

day All-Tournament teams.

“Sam had a wonderful season for us but the best is yet to come from this sophomore,” Niles West coach Tony Konsewicz said.

OLIVIA JENKINS PLAINFIELD EAST Junior averaged 12.79 points and 7.18 rebounds per game this season.

She was named to the Marist Thanksgiving All-Tournament team and was Class 3A/4A IBCA honorable mention all-state.

“Olivia is a fierce competitor that will do whatever it takes to help the team win. Some games it was score, some it was rebound, others she set the tone by diving on the floor for loose balls. She refused to let us lose,” Tony Waznonis said.

HOLLY LUEKEN DOWNERS SOUTH Sophomore forward averaged 15.8 points and five rebounds per game, while recording 65 blocked shots.

TSIMBA MALONGA BENET ACADEMY Junior point guard averaged 12 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2.2 steals per game.

After sitting out her sophomore year due to transfer, the starting point guard led the Redwings to 28-5 record and sectional championship. She made the all ESCC All-Conference team and was alltournament at both the Naperville North and Montini Holiday Tournaments. She was named to the Class 3A/4A IBCA all-state third team.

“Tsimba has been the sparkplug to ignite Benet’s full court pressure and fast break offense,” said Kilbride. “An incredibly accurate mid-range shooter, she was the scoring leader for the Redwings balanced attack while shooting 50 percent from the floor.”

LOTA ONUA PLAINFIELD EAST Senior averaged 11.25 points and 6.44 rebounds per game.

She was named to the SPC

All-Conference team as well as all-tournament at the Nazareth Holiday Tournament and DeKalb MLK Tournament. She was Class 3A/4A IBCA honorable mention all-state.

“Lota is the embodiment of a competitor,” Waznonis said. “She was a key part in helping lead us to the success we had this year, not just as an athlete, but also as a leader.”

JULIE POSPISILOVA DOWNERS NORTH Exchange student averaged 14 points, six rebounds, three steals, three assists and two blocked shots per game.

She was named to the all-tournament team at the Wheaton North tournament and was MVP of the Glenbard East Thanksgiving tournament. She was named to the All-West Suburban Conference Silver Division team and was Class 3A/4A IBCA all-state honorable mention.

KELLE KNOPP PLAINFIELD NORTH Junior averaged eight points and 12 rebounds per game for the Tigers to help lead the team to a school-best 17-10 record.

TYANN LEGRANDMELTON, LISLE Senior averaged 12.4 points and 9.7 points per game for the Lions, helping them to a 20-win season.

She was named Class 1A/2A IBCA all-state honorable mention.

ALEXIS MARIN ROMEOVILLE Senior point guard averaged 13.68 points, 2.67 rebounds, 2.64 assists and 1.74 steals per game.

She was named to the AllSouthwest Prairie Conference team as well as all-tournament at the Romeoville Thanksgiving and Nazareth Christmas tournaments.

She was a 1,000 point scorer for the Spartans in her career.

“Alexis has been our starting point guard for four years and one of our top scorers,” said Romeoville coach Julio Carrasco.

“She is a nightmare to defend and can create her own shot or hit from the outside. She will be truly missed.”

She does all the little things for the team.”

The Saginaw Valley State recruit was named to the East Suburban Catholic Conference AllConference team as well as the Naperville North all-tournament team.

“During her 4 years on the Benet varsity the Redwings have compiled a record of 115-21 with four regional titles, three sectional titles, two supersectional titles and two IHSA Class 4A State Championships,” Benet coach Joe Kilbride said.

Debt doesn’t have to be a relationship deal breaker DEAR DAVE, One of my relatives just graduated from college with $20,000 in student loan debt. Her boyfriend graduated, too, and he has over $100,000 in student loan debt.

They want to get married, so she’s looking for a job. He wants to go to graduate school, and take out more loans to remain a full-time student.

The idea of even more debt hanging over their heads really bothers her. Do you have any advice?

DENISE DEAR DENISE, You don’t throw away a great, potentially lifelong, relationship just because of debt. Things like laziness, dishonesty, and irresponsible behavior are deal breakers, though.

Those are flaws that usually don’t go away. I’m glad she’s looking for a job, but her boyfriend needs to be working, too. There’s no excuse for either of them being full-time students with more than $120,000 in combined student loan debt hanging over their heads. Lots of people hold down real jobs, save money, and further their educations on a part-time basis.

If she were my niece, I would encourage her to have an open and honest discussion with her boy-

friend about their future, and how he plans on paying for graduate school. She also needs to be very real about her feelings in this situation. If, after that, he still wants to just borrow more money and not work outside of school, then she might have a difficult decision ahead. However, if he realizes how damaging additional debt could be to their relationship, and he’s willing to work while continuing his education, I think their future together looks much brighter.

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, My husband and I heard about your plan, but we’re not sure what to do next. We have between $400,000 and $500,000 in a 401(k) for retirement, but we don’t have any other savings. We’re both in our

40s, and the only debt we have is our house, so what should we do about Baby Steps 4 and 6?

MARY DEAR MARY, Overall, you two have done a great job with your money. Let’s go over the Baby Steps you mentioned. Baby Step 4 is putting 15 percent of your income into Roth IRAs and pre-tax retirement plans.

Baby Step 6 is paying off your home early. The thing that worries me is you’ve completely skipped Baby Step 3, which is having three to six months of expenses in an emergency fund. My advice is to temporarily stop your 401(k) contributions until you get a fully funded emergency fund in place. By temporarily, I mean six to eight months at most. That way, you’ll be covered when life happens without having make a big dent in your retirement savings!
