Voyager Media trivia night brings out the geeks, again 2nd annual trivia night held Feb. 24

More than 50 participants came out to Hollywood Palms Theater in Naperville Feb. 24 for a truly epic trivia competition.

For the second year in a row, Voyager Media held its trivia night competition. The event invited teams of four to answer questions ranging from books and comics to movies and video games.

For the second straight year, team Trivia Newton John blasted the competition. Team members Stacey Adams, of Plainfield; Amanda Kramer, of Joliet; Summer Kornfeind, of Joliet; and Emily Stowe, of Plainfield, each won a 3-day pass to the annual Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo.

The convention, known simply

as C2E2, is scheduled for March 18-20 at the McCormick Place in downtown Chicago.

The trivia competition was divided into six rounds, with 10 questions in each.

Teams were given one minute per question before moving on.

For Trivia Newton John, the win came down to the wire. They finished only one point ahead of second place team Kylo Ren and Stimpy and two points ahead of third place Stella Star and the Starcrashers.

In the end, everyone who attended the event was a winner.

Door prizes were handed out by event sponsor Amazing Fantasy Comics, located in Lockport. The prizes included water bottles, sweatshirts and entertainment figurines.

Hollywood Palms cosponsored the event.

Janice Schwarze named next Downers Grove North Principal

Associate principal Janice Schwarze will take over as the next principal of Downers Grove North High School next year, and the long-time District 99 administrator couldn’t be happier.

“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity and privilege to serve North High’s students as their principal next year,” Schwarze said in a news release announcing the appointment.

“I look forward to working with everyone in this supportive and close community.”

The District 99 Board of Education approved the appointment during its Feb. 22 business meeting. Officials also appointed Karen Taylor as the next associate principal of students and staff at Downers Grove South High School during the meeting.

Schwarze, who has been with the district since 2007, will replace current principal Scott Kasik, who has held the position for the last five years. The 37-year educator endorsed his successor, saying she is more than qualified for the job.

“Janice is knowledgeable, energetic and most importantly, cares about every student,” Kasik said. “I respect her abilities and passion to help students succeed, and know she’ll make a fine leader.”

Schwarze joined the district nearly a decade ago as the chair of the English department at Downers Grove South High. In that role, she hired, mentored and evaluated teachers, developed curriculum and led the literacy coaching program.

She also served as a key leader in the district’s adoption of the

new English and Language Arts standards.

In 2013, she was selected as North High’s associate principal for curriculum and instruction, leading all curriculum, instruction and assessment initiatives at the school, according to District 99.

“Janice is a proven instructional leader and someone who has significant teaching experience, so she understands the needs of both students and teachers,” Board of Education President Nancy Kupka said. “My fellow board members and I are confident that she’s the right and clear choice to lead North High well into the future.”

District 99 said it conducted an extensive search and interview process before deciding to appoint Schwarze. Ultimately, officials said the decision was based on positive reviews from staff members, students, parents and building leaders who were involved in the team interview process.

Another recent hire, incoming District 99 Superintendent Hank Thiele, led the search process and recommended Schwarze to the board of education.

“Janice is a highly regarded leader both inside of District 99 and by educators outside of the district,” Thiele said. “Her educational expertise, focus on students and commitment to Downers Grove North make Janice the perfect fit as the next principal.”

Prior to being hired by District 99, Schwarze was an English teacher at Glenbard East High School for 20 years. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in teaching of English from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and an Master of Arts in English from Northwestern University.

She lives in Carol Stream with

her husband Jeff. The couple has two adult children, Brian, 23, and Katie, 20.

Board hires associate principal at South High During the Feb. 22 meeting, the board of education also approved the hiring of Karen Taylor as D o w n e r s Grove South’s associate principal for staff and students.

Currently a dean of students at Maine East High School in Park Ridge, Taylor oversees the school’s behavioral program and is responsible for interventions for more than 700 students.

“It is certainly an honor to be invited to join the leadership team at Downers Grove South High School,” Taylor said. “I’m excited to help further the goals of the school and community.”

South High Principal Ed Schwartz said Taylor’s colleagues describe her as a “studentcentered leader” who is passionate about serving her students.

“She is personable and approachable, and someone who will make immediate and positive connections with staff and students,” he added.

Taylor holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and women’s studies from Washington University in St. Louis, and a Master of Arts degree in educational administration from Northeastern Illinois University.

She is currently working on her Doctor of Education degree at Concordia University.

Rhonda Jackson received the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award Feb. 26 during a surprise, all-school assembly.

Representatives of the Woodridge VFW, Mayor Gina Cunningham, students, staff and administrators from School District 68 and Jackson’s family were on hand to recognize her “outstanding commitment to teaching Americanism and patriotism” to her students.

“It feels simply amazing and is a true honor,” Jackson said of the award. “I love coming to work each day and having the opportunity to touch the lives of my students and their families.

I always hope that the students feel I make a difference in their lives.”

She added that the occasion

was made more special because she was able to share it with her colleagues, past and present students, family, and the Woodridge community.

“It’s something that I will always remember,” Jackson said.

Sipley Principal Don Mrozik nominated Jackson for the award.

“Mrs. Jackson has instilled confidence in her children through meaningful lessons, which have contributed to the development of an educational foundation upon which amazing lives have been built,” he wrote in the nomination letter. “She takes great pride in helping students reach their full potential and watching them discover ways to make our world a better place.”

As the Woodridge VFW Post 1578 Teacher of the Year, Jackson’s nomination will now advance to the state level.

Community House to ‘Band Together’ for learning Westmont car dealer is lead sponsor of benefit concert The Community House has set March 5 as the date for a benefit concert to support the organization’s Willowbrook Corner Youth Learning Program.

All event proceeds will go to support the Willowbrook Corner Youth Learning Program, which offers a number of learning opportunities that address the national trend of widened academic achievement gaps in high need, typically low income, neighborhoods.

“The vision of our Willowbrook Corner Youth Learning Program is to provide support and educational enhancement resources for youth academic success, career readiness and leadership development,” Fabian said. “Our goals are to help young students improve their educational performance, practice positive decision-making skills, and provide opportunities for community involvement.”

Willowbrook Corner Director Rebecca Perkaus explained that since the neighborhood served by the program is unincorporated, its residents are not served by a municipality or a park district.

“In other words, the children in the Willowbrook Corner neighborhood do not have the same opportunities as their fellow classmates, and we are there to make sure that the children residing in the Willowbrook Corner community have the academic support and life skills necessary to succeed,” she added.

Perkaus said the program has a highly trained staff that includes a certified teacher, qualified aides and trained volunteers.

“Our team provides a consistent presence for students over a period of many years, and develops positive, encouraging relationships with our children and parents to support their success,” she said.

Willowbrook Corner Learning Program also recognizes that youth programming alone is not enough to close the gap that exists in the neighborhood. Taking a family approach, Perkaus saidWillowbrook Corner also offers a wide range of support initiatives for parents that are designed to empower them to improve their financial situations.

State explores private funds for I-55 expansion Resolution would allow IDOT to seek private partners By bugle staff sweditor@buglenewspapers.com @DownersGrvBugle

Approximately 170,000 vehicles travel the Stevenson Expressway between Interstate 355 and Interstate 90/94 each day. Last month, state officials introduced a plan to alleviate congestion along this busy 25-mile stretch of highway.

The I-55 managed lanes project would add at least one lane in each direction between the Veterans Memorial Tollway and the Dan Ryan Expressway, according to Illinois Department of Transportation. Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner announced in February that legislative leaders introduced a legislative resolution that would give IDOT the go ahead to explore

adding managed lanes to I-55 under a private-public partnership.

“By using existing resources to leverage private investment, we can build the type of infrastructure that allows Illinois to better compete in the 21st century,” Rauner said in a release announcing the resolution.

His office added that the partnership between public and private interests would lower the cost of the project and shorten its timeline.

“This is an innovative project that will create jobs, improve the region’s quality of life and show that Illinois is open for business,” Rauner added.

Will and DuPage county residents are among the thousands of commuters who travel this stretch of the Stevenson, which officials said experiences frequent congestion and unreliable travel times.

One of those commuters, House Republican Leader Jim Durkin, said this proposal helps IDOT keep the I-55 Congestion Relief Project

moving forward by seeking out private funds.

“Regardlessofthetimeofday,there is congestion along the Stevenson Expressway,” Durkin said. “Not only is it a source of regular frustration for drivers, including myself, it can be a dangerous situation for both motorist and passengers.”

Options currently being explored include the possible addition of tolled and untolled carpool lanes, as well as express tolling lanes. The governor’s office said Illinois would complete federal environmental studies later this year, which will help identify a preferred option.

“Managed lanes are truly an expressway within an expressway – one more option that will make travel more convenient for everyone who uses I-55,” Illinois Transportation Secretary Randy Blankenhorn said.

“This project signals a new way of doing business at IDOT and a model for improvements throughout our system.”

Brush, yard waste pickup begins in April Disposal of yard waste requires a Westmont yard waste sticker

The village of Westmont reminded residents that Waste Management will begin weekly collection of brush and yard waste at single-family homes the week of April 4.

The program runs through the fall, ending in early December.

Homeowners who utilize the brush and yard waste program were also reminded of several guidelines that must be followed to ensure items are collected and to prevent the homeowner from receiving a fine.

The brush pick-up program does not require a sticker, and material should be placed alongside refuse on the property’s usual garbage pickup day. Acceptable material for pick-up includes smaller twigs, branches, and tree limbs that are no more than 4 feet long and no wider than 2 inches in diameter.

Brush must be tied with twine or string into bundles prior to being placed out for collection.

Individual bundles must be no more than 4 feet long and 2 feet in diameter, and weigh less than 50 pounds.

The village also reminded residents that open burning of brush and leaves is not allowed, and added that they can dispose of brush up to 6 inches in diameter through the yard waste program.

Disposal of yard waste requires a Westmont yard waste sticker be placed on each bag of waste, which should be placed out with refuse on the home’s usual garbage pickup day.

The village said yard waste must be placed in appropriate yard waste bags or appropriate containers clearly marked yard waste.

Acceptable items for the yard waste program include grass clippings, weeds, leaves, smaller branches and bushes, and other organic matter that grows outside.

Items that are not acceptable for the yard waste program include

rocks, dirt, soil, sod, mulch, holiday wreaths, pumpkins, apples, hay or straw bales, corn stalks, trees, stumps and branches larger than 6 inches in diameter.

For these items, residents may use a landscape service.

“Relieving the congestion on this stretch of I-55 must be a priority for the state of Illinois,” Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno said. “However, we must

also recognize the state must be creative in addressing our transportation challenges. This is an innovative approach that has been successful in other states and should be explored here.”

The I-55 project would be Illinois first managed lanes project using private funds. Officials said the use of private funds would save taxpayers an estimated $425 million in construction costs for the project, which could start as early as next year and wrap up in 2019.

I was beaming with excitement one afternoon in spring 2010, during one of my journalism classes at Roosevelt University. We were studying how to use new media and technology within our field, when a nearby classmate, who was not diagnosed with a disability, made a comment that hit me like a brick.

“Why is this technology so retarded,” the classmate said, without knowing who might be affected by this word.

The classmate had no idea that the use of the “r-word,” even as it was not directed towards me, still hurt.

“Using the r-word against us athletes hurts us because most people don’t think before they actually say the words,” said Georgia Hunter, my friend and fellow athlete and Global

Messenger in Special Olympics Illinois.

Georgia has been diagnosed with Down syndrome.

Today, March 2, thousands of people across the country are spreading awareness in the eighth annual Spread the Word to End the Word campaign.

For those of us with special needs, as well as for our family and friends, the word “retard(ed),” or the “r-word” as it is referred to in the campaign, is extremely offensive – even when the word is not directed toward us. If someone, like my former classmate, uses the “r-word” about an inanimate object to mean that the object is slow, this connotes a similar meaning that those of us with special needs might learn or act a little slower than others.

“The cool thing about Spread the Word to End the Word is that there are thousands of events across the country, and everyone kind of goes about it a bit differently,” said Tim Shriver Jr., cofounder of the campaign. “Every event has a pledge banner where people sign their name and take the pledge to not only stop using the ‘r-word’ [themselves] but to speak up when others use it.”

People can join more than 585,197 other online pledges by signing the pledge electronically and learning more about Spread the Word to End the Word at www.r-word.org.

When I was delivered three-and-athird months premature 27 years ago, people commonly used the “r-word” as an acceptable term to describe people with visible and invisible intellectual disabilities. Fast forward to present day, medical professionals are becoming more understanding and respectful with their word choice.

Take my sister, Stefanie Smrokowski, 25, for example. She is a doctor of physical therapy and has grown up with an older brother who has special needs. She feels encouraged about

The state of Illinois budget impasse is hurting the most vulnerable families in our community, while undermining the state’s ability to grow the economy and create good-paying new jobs.

Gov. Rauner delivered his Budget Address Feb. 17. In his speech, the governor outlined two alternate paths to resolve the impasse. The first, preferred option, is for Democrats and Republicans in the state House and Senate to come together and compromise on a budget solution that includes some of the governor’s proposed reforms… “To lower the cost of government, while generating economic growth.”

These include workers’ compensation reform, lawsuit reform, local government consolidation and

reform to the processes by which the state negotiates contracts with the state employees’ union.

The alternative option is for the General Assembly to grant the governor CEO-like powers to control government spending.

Powers requested by the governor include the creation of spending reserves, reductions in certain provider rates and modifications to continuing appropriations. Under this scenario, the governor would have the ability to manage state government spending in the absence of a budget.

As one observer put it, the choices facing the majority party in Springfield are to “lead, follow or get out of the way.” We must move forward with a bipartisan solution to this budget impasse.

The situation has become so dire that Catholic Charities, Illinois’ largest provider of social services, recently announced a massive reduction in

services and a new round of layoffs unless the budget impasse is resolved.

Earlier this month, Lutheran Social Services of Illinois announced it would cut 750 jobs and close 30 of its 190 programs for veterans and substance abuse clients. According to the United Way of Illinois, 83 percent of the state’s social service agencies have cut programs since the budget deadlock began in July 2015.

We owe it to every Illinois family and taxpayer to come together and agree on a budget that maintains a vital safety net for the most vulnerable children and families in our community, while reforming state government to allow for greater economic growth and opportunity. As the budget negotiator for my caucus and an advocate for human services, I remain committed to doing my part to forge compromise.

After a down offensive game by her standards in the sectional opener, Kathleen Doyle was back to herself in the final, scoring 31 points and leading Benet to a 6860 win over Oswego East and the sectional title.

“It was an exciting game.

Who wouldn’t be amped up for a sectional final game on your home court?” Doyle said “I was just playing a little bit better offensively. I think I was sort of in a funk, but my teammates picked me up on Monday and it didn’t matter. They had faith in me tonight to bounce back and I guess it was just kind of my night.”

The 31 points for Doyle tied a career high.

Early in the game, it was Oswego East’s Schultz who scored three fast baskets, but the Redwings took over and held a 19-8 lead after the first quarter and 35-23 at the half.

“We were going to do everything we could to make it an up and down game and we were able to

get some pace,” said Benet coach Joe Kilbride. “We got some runs and got some distance.”

By late in the third quarter, Benet held a 49-28, but Oswego East fought back and started to cut into the lead late and at one point had shaved it down to a 5950 deficit.

“We told them at halftime that they were going to make some runs and that we would have to sustain them,” Kilbride said.

“Honestly, the way we play, we almost let teams back in. I think part of the problem here was that we tried to slow it down and we didn’t know what to do and we threw it away.”

Katie Jaseckas added 19 points, while Elise Stout chipped in 11 to help hold off the Wolves.

For Benet, the second-straight sectional title was one more step in defense of the Class 4A state championship it won last season.

There were a lot of people who didn’t think the Redwings would win a sectional title after losing key players such as Emily Eshoo and Emily Schramek to graduation.

Dumford, divers medal at state

EVANSTON – In what was one of the fastest races of the boys state final swim meet, Downers Grove South senior Sam Dumford placed third in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.98 seconds.

The winner was Payton Woods from Champaign Central, who posted a time of 20.94.

“It was a great day,” Dumford said. “The 50 I am ecstatic about.

Taking third by .4 seconds, I wish I took first, but I am 100 percent happy with it. I was in the 20s for the first time.”

Dumford’s dad, Dan, was the state champion in the 50 free in 1985 for Naperville Central with a time of 21.02.

“I beat my dad’s time from high school, so that was an extra benchmark to hit,” Sam said.

Dumford also placed 11th in the 100 free in 46.56.

“I was just exhausted,” he said.

“This weekend has really kicked my butt. It was all worth it, I am happy.”

While he hasn’t decided where he will attend college next season, Dumford did decide to swim collegiately and not pursue playing soccer at the next level.

A pair of Downers Grove North divers also competed in the state finals as freshman Kevin Sullivan was seventh with a score of 430.90, while junior Ryan Murphy was eighth with a score of 421.05.

“There was a lot of tough competition out there,” Sullivan said. “It was cool to be out there with all the big boys. I just went out and hoped for the best. Being a freshman, I could just dive how I wanted to see where I came

In the sectional opener, Benet defeated Neuqua Valley 71-60 behind a 27-point outburst from Kendal Schramek. Stout added 15 and Jaseckas chipped in 14.

“She has such a unique skill set at her size,” Kilbride said of Schramek. “She makes such a tough cover when you have a four who can handle the ball and shoot. Her sister (Emily) was the same way and Kendal actually has a broader range of skills than Emily did in terms of ball handling and play making.

It makes us really tough because I have four guards, but I can still match your size.”
