Staff, students brave cold waters for cause More than 50 students, staff participate in Feb. 18 for Special Olympics Illinois

If there was ever a good reason to go swimming in Lake Michigan in February, members of the Downers Grove South High School community agreed this is it.

More than 50 students and staff members braved icy waters to participate in the Polar Plunge to support Special Olympics Illinois on Feb. 18.

Downers Grove South High School’s team took a dip into the icy waters of Lake Michigan at Clark Street Beach in Evanston.

“This is the first year we’ve done it as a big school,” said Jennifer Martinez, director of student activities. “We have a program— our D99 Hoops program, which is funded by Special Olympics [Illinois] to play basketball within our district for students with intellectual disabilities. So, they’ve done it on a smaller [scale]—maybe some staff members have done it. But this year, we had tons of students that registered and raised lots of money because it’s our [school’s

yearly] philanthropy focus.”

Students participating in the Polar Plunge were required to raise a minimum of $100 to earn a team sweatshirt.

“Many of them exceeded those expectations because our goal was to raise $4,000,” Martinez said.

Kevin Ahrens, vocational coordinator for the multi-needs program, participated in the Polar Plunge.

“The money goes to Special Olympics Illinois, and that gives our kids opportunities down the road to access different [recreational programs] during high school and post-high school,” Ahrens said.

He said the community’s support is exceptional.

“It was amazing to see the whole school get involved,” Ahrens said.

“To raise over $10,000 is a quite an accomplishment. In year’s past, we’ve had like four, six plungers.

To have 53 [participants], is pretty amazing. That says a lot about our school.”

DGS junior Anna Buie said she enjoyed the experience.

“I thought it was really fun to

get together with a good friends [to support] a charity that I’m passionate about,” she said. “I interact with a lot of the kids who are in the special education program.”

Buie said the high school does a wonderful job of making students with special needs feel connected to the campus.

“I think we have a really welcoming community,” she said.

“We have a lot of basketball teams, we have cheerleading with them, and I was also a [physical education] leader for a class with special education and general education kids, so we do a good job of inte-

grating them into the school and making them feel part of our community.”

DGS senior Alexa Vitagliano, too, shared that sentiment.

“Specifically our school we have a huge special education program, and there’s so many things you can do to help them or get involved with them,” she said. “We have two different clubs, Friendship and Go Green—which I’m also in. It’s general education and special education kids both working together. So, that helps [them in integrating] with general education kids and not just have

them separated with just each other.”

Vitagliano said she often devotes time to coaching students with special needs, but to make a difference financially to support Special Olympics Illinois was unbelievable.

“I was not expecting to raise as much as I did,” she said. “I ended up raising $1,215. I put it on social media, all my friends and family just started donating, and it just took off. So, that made it more fun to actually do it for an important purpose.”

This year was Vitagliano’s first time participating in a Polar Plunge.

“I was nervous at first,” she said.

“It was my first one, and I heard it was really cold in the past. But, it was so nice out that I was like, ‘OK, I got this.’ We jumped in and it was cold, but it wasn’t as bad as I heard in the past. It was fun.”

In all, the team raised $10,404.50. The high school’s effort to support Special Olympics is a part of a yearlong philanthropy project. Contributions will be accepted through the end of April.

DGS Choir to perform at Carnegie Hall Sixty-one DGS Choir students have been selected to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City on Saturday, March 25. They will perform along with several other nationally recognized high school choirs.

The students were selected to sing through Choirs of America.

Once a year, the COA president invites proven high school choirs to perform at their National Festival in New York City. The invitation was based on DGS Madrigal Singer performances last year at both the Illinois Music Educator’s Convention in Peoria and the American Choral Director’s Central Division Convention in Chicago, which were by recorded audition. ”The chance to sing in New York City is a wonderful accolade and opportunity for our students, who were especially selected for this performance,” says DGS Choir Director Laura Coster, who has taught at the school for over 30 years and

is retiring this year. Coster and collaborative pianist Ricardo Pedroza have been rehearsing with the students, including working on a newly commissioned piece by composer Randall Stroope for the massed choir performance.

So Much Media, So Little Time Enjoy media because you want to, not because you think you should I recently helped a client who was grappling with his desire to enjoy more leisure time by watching more movies & television and reading more books. He was concerned that his lists of mustwatch TV, books to read, and movies to experience kept growing, but his available media consumption time was not keeping pace. You can use the same suggestions I gave him to enjoy more leisure time: Adding new items to your media consumption wish list without removing anything, comes at a cost. It might be sleep; it might be time with friends; whatever it is, be sure you’re willing to pay the price of adding more.

Otherwise, use the four Ds to help you pare down: 1. DELETE Wouldn’t it feel great to reduce your guilt by getting rid of something from your queue of obligations? Can you live with the outcome of not watching or reading everything? Rather than hope that illness or injury will give

By Sue Becker you a reason to spend a month on the couch catching up on the shows you’ve recorded, give yourself permission to enjoy the best of what’s there guilt-free, and let the rest go.

2. DIMINISH Accept that you already have a good foundation of knowledge on a subject from other sources and trim how much you have to take in. For example, do you have to watch the entire six-hour Ken Burns cancer documentary, or is your current knowledge good enough? Can you just watch the final hour to hear a summary of the latest findings?

3. DELAY If you don’t get to it now, it will still be out there when you have more time to take it in. Put it on a list for future enjoyment.

4. DELEGATE Do you have to watch it or read it, or would reading a review or synopsis be good enough?

5. GO WITH THE FLOW Setting a pattern, like reading one old book after reading two new ones, may be helpful. But it can also be confining.

If you’re in the mood to read another new book after already reading two new ones, by golly, read another new book.

This is for your enjoyment, right?

6. BE TRUE TO YOURSELF Enjoy the media because you want to, not because you think you should. So what if you haven’t seen the latest movie everyone’s talking about – welcome to my life! Even if I’m not always part of the cultural conversation, I’m ok with it and I still find plenty of things to talk about with friends and colleagues.

Here’s to more enjoyable leisure time and less guilt.

Man found guilty of murdering his mother Michael Bassaly, 30, formerly of Downers Grove, guilty of 1st degree murder in 2013 shooting of his mother DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced Feb. 27 that a jury has found Michael Bassaly, 30, formerly of Downers Grove, guilty of first degree murder in the 2013 shooting death of his mother. The jury also found Bassaly guilty of personally discharging the firearm that killed his mother, making him eligible for an extended

prison term in the Illinois Department of Corrections. The jury came back with their guilty verdict after approximately two hours of deliberations following a three-day-long trial in front of Judge Daniel Guerin. Bassaly has been held without bond at the DuPage County Jail since the murder.

On August 29, 2013, Burr Ridge

police were dispatched to St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church, 15W455 79th Street, Burr Ridge, following a 12:53 a.m. 911 call placed by Michael Bassaly. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered Bassaly’s mother, Yvonne Zaky Bassaly, 61, in the backseat of his vehicle. She had been shot once in the head but was still alive. Mrs. Bassaly was immediately taken from the scene by ambulance to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead at 1:42 a.m. An investigation led authorities to

Michael as the gun man.

“Michael Bassaly unsuccessfully tried to convince a jury that his mother took her own life,” Berlin said. “Today, a jury saw through his lies and feeble attempts to avoid responsibility for the murder of his own mother by claims of suicide. This was a very difficult case as the victim and defendant are mother and son. To the entire Bassaly family, I wish them some measure of closure as they come to the final stages of this horrible family tragedy. I would like to thank the

Burr Ridge Police Department and the Felony Investigative Assistance Team for their fine work on this case. I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Steve Knight and Jennifer Lindt for their outstanding work in holding Mr. Bassaly responsible for the murder of his mother.”

Bassaly’s next court appearance is scheduled for March 22, for post-trial motions and return of the pre-sentence report. He faces a prison sentence of between 45-years-to-life in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Benet wins third sectional title in three years The faces may be different, but the names are still the same – the last names anyway.

As Benet Academy defeated Plainfield East 59-48 last weekend for the title at the East Aurora Sectional - its third-straight – the Redwings did so with many of the same names that has it the past.

Benet was paced in the game by sophomore Clara Prasse, who tallied a season-best 18 points. Prasse – along with sisters Kendall and Brooke Schramek – all had sisters on at least one of the state title teams.

“We need more of them,” Benet coach Joe Kilbride joked.

“But, yeah – Prasse is the third one, we have the third Schramek now, Sami Valentine last year was the third one and Kathleen Doyle was one of six. We have been blessed with really good kids.”

Good kids who can play.

After Benet found itself trailing 18-10 to the Bengals, freshman Brooke Schramek scored a quick five points that got the Redwings back on track.

“I think we just realized that if we lose, we’re done and the seniors are gone,” she said. “I think we really motivated each other.

Our energy was crazy good, we were cutting harder, our passes were stronger and we were looking for each other a lot more.”

Benet also turned on the pressure defense and made it difficult

for East to advance the ball past half court.

“In some ways, it is not a very complicated game. You have to guard, you have to rebound and you have to make shots and take care of the ball. If you do those four things, nothing else really matters,” Kilbride said.

The Redwings were paced

by Prasse’s 18, while Tsimba Malonga added 13 and Brooke Schramek chipped in 10.

Katie Jasekas tallied 10 points and 10 rebounds.

“We spend a lot of time looking at who is playing well and who to give a little more run to because we have so many good weapons, which is a great problem,” Kilbride said. “Kendall is not scoring a ton of points this year, but when she is locked in and flying around, we can play with anybody. Katie is just a warrior.

If you are ever going into a war – you want to take Katie with you.

That kid will battle until the end.

“We have a few things that are our core motto and one of them is sacrifice and I told the kids that I am not worried about that with them. They don’t care about who is getting the buckets or who is getting the press because all they care about is winning and that is the exact spot to start.”

Winning is something the Redwings are looking for again.

Lisle boys claim regional championship

The old adage, “defense wins championships,” was certainly on display, in Friday’s Class 2A Wilmington Boys Regional Championship Game. Lisle (19-11), held Princeton (14-15), to four points in the first and fourth quarters and went on to beat the Tigers 50-42, for the regional championship.

With the victory, the Lions will face Kankakee Bishop McNamara (21-7), a 60-42 Beecher Regional championship game-winner, over Illiana Christian, on Tuesday February 28 at 7, in a Class 2A Seneca Sectional semifinal.

Lisle’s 6-2 senior Mark McGrath, led the Lions with 20 points and completed his “double-double”, hauling down 12

rebounds. Lion defensive standouts were seniors, Trevor Stitt (8 points) and Grant Haen ( 6 points). Stitt and Haen, put the clamps on Princeton’s two “big guns”, senior Colby Robbins (16 points) and junior Josh Reinhardt ( 7 points) With 3:43 left in the game, 6-6 Tiger Colton Youngren (11 points, six rebounds), would score inside for Princeton, bringing the Tigers within three, at 43-40. Mark McGrath’s powerful put-back basket, gave the Lions a 45-40 lead with 3:11 left.

“I went into tonight’s game, knowing I had to have a big night on the glass,“ Mark McGrath said. “It felt great to come up with the “double-double” and get the huge win. I have been waiting my four years at Lisle, for this moment. It’s an amazing feeling to win this regional championship and we want to

go down to Seneca and continue to win.”

Princeton’s Chris Parry ( six points) scored to bring the Tigers back within three again, at 45-42 with 2:56 remaining.

Mark McGrath’s “little bro” sophomore Jay, may have come with the play of the game, next.

Grabbing a Tiger miss, the sophomore, went “coast to coast” and laid in his third and fourth points of the game, extending the Lions lead to 47-42, with 2:01 left.

Princeton’s Robbins, who scored all 16 of his points in the second and third quarter, was shutout by the Lion defense in the fourth quarter. The StittHaen duo, wouldn’t even allow him to get off a shot. With 23 seconds left, Stitt nailed a pair of charity tosses and Haen added one more, to complete the scoring in the game.

“Our game plan was to shutdown Robbins and Reinhardt,” Stitt said. “It was awesome the way our game play came to fruition, helping us win the regional championship. I was able to knock down some shots tonight.

We can’t wait for Tuesday night.”

“Trevor and I talked before the game about shutting down Robbins and Reinhardt,” Haen said.

“We played great defense all night, especially locking Princeton up, in the fourth quarter. We don’t care who we play Tuesday.

We just want to enjoy this great victory, tonight.”

The Lions scored the first 10 points of the game and held a 13-4 lead after one quarter. The Tigers, roared back in the second quarter, behind Robbins and Youngren and the game was deadlocked at 23, after 16 minutes.

In the third quarter, both the

Lions and Tigers, unleashed a long-range artillery bombardment. Robbins buried a pair from three-point land and Reinhardt buried one. Lisle’s Bryan O’Connell (six points) buried a pair and Stitt would nail his second three of the night, as Lisle led 41-38 after three quarters.

“This was a great team win for us,” Lisle head coach Mark LaScala said. “We knew we would have to play great defense against the high-scoring Princeton team and we did. Trevor and Grant really shutdown #32 and #4.

The things that Mark McGrath is able to do being only 6-2, is amazing. Mark had an outstanding game for us. I know we will be underdogs on Tuesday against a great Bishop Mac team. We have to go down to Seneca and continue to play great defense and our game.”

South gymnats enjoy state meet together

Kayla Carlson’s gymnastics career is coming to an end, while Andrea Davenport’s is just getting ramped up.

The two Downers Grove South stars made their final meet together a memorable one as both advanced to the individual event finals at the state meet at Palatine on Saturday.

Carlson, a senior, scored 9.375 on floor exercise during Friday’s preliminary round to finish in a three-way tie for the 10thand final spot in the finals.

Davenport, a sophomore who was making her first state appearance as an individual qualifier, earned her finals berth by rating 9.3 on balance beam, good for sixth place.

Both performances were noteworthy, though for different reasons. Carlson is a state meet veteran but missed all but the last month of her final season with a fractured vertebrae in her back.

“I really wanted to finish off the last season, even though the doctors were a little bit against it,” Carlson said. “I just wanted to finish it on my own terms and see what I could do.

“So just being here, knowing that there was a chance that I wasn’t going to come back, was good enough on its own to realize that I was off for however many months and I at least made it here. That’s exciting.”

Carlson also competed to honor her younger sister, Abby, who suffered a torn ACL at the West Suburban Gold meet, an injury that doomed the Mustangs’ hopes of advancing to state as a team for the second

Abby Carlson, a sophomore, underwent surgery last Monday and watched the competition from a wheelchair in the balcony.

Kayla Carlson made her sister and teammates proud. She finished 27th in the all-around (35.3), 18th on vault (9.45) and 19thon uneven bars (9.05).

Carlson’s only missed routine came on balance beam, where she fell twice, but she bounced back by sticking her floor routine to earn Saturday’s final performance.

“I had great vault and great bars so I wasn’t going to let one bad beam routine define the day that I was having,” Carlson said.

“I was having a good day, so I just wanted to end it on a positive note and I did that.”

So did Davenport, who had to follow Carlson on beam.

“I’m very happy because I was scared I would fall,” Davenport said. “(Carlson’s falls made me nervous) but I don’t really watch beforehand because otherwise it will really freak me out.

“I just told myself to have fun, not think about it because it doesn’t matter at this point. (I did) close to my best.”

Carlson scored 9.35 on floor Saturday to finish in a tie for 10th, while Davenport grabbed ninth place on beam with an 8.825.

Downers South coach Kristyn Campos was proud of all of her gymnasts, but she was particularly thrilled for Davenport, who finished 17th on floor (9.25) in her only other performance.

“She’s improved tremendously from freshman year to this year,” Campos said. “Her gymnastics and her confidence has made some very impressive

strides and I think that’s why she is here.

“It shows the progress and the level of our gymnastics is increasing and she’s someone that needs to be watched out for.

She’s a great gymnast with great talent and we were able to see it today.”

Junior Lindsay Tom qualified for state individually for the first time and finished 32nd on bars (8.2) after a fall early in her routine.

“The bars are a little slippery today,” Tom said. “It wasn’t just me that slipped off, but I was happy with the rest of my routine.

“My double (dismount) was great. Hopefully I can come back next year and stay on the bars.”

The Mustangs hope to return several individuals and hopefully the entire team to state on a regular basis, something that was unthinkable several years ago.

“I’m just proud of them,” Campos said. “We’ve come so far in the last 10 years that I’ve been coaching that this is just an expectation now that we’re going to be at state.

“I’m nothing but proud of all of their work. They came out and did the best they could and that’s all I can ask for.”

“Two years ago we were not even ranked in the preseason – then we won state. But, we graduated 44 points per game and everyone said, ‘they will be good, but,’ ” Kilbride said. “Then

last year we were pretty good again and won, but we graduated three staring guards and the best player in the state of Illinois (Kathleen Doyle). Again, everyone said, ‘they will be good, but not as good.’ This is a credit to the kids.”

DOWNERS GROVE NORTH Downers Grove North’s Rebecca Donnelly and Brooke Stocki made their state meet debuts as both appeared on balance beam.

Stocki, a sophomore, scored 8.85 to finish 20th and would have qualified for finals if not for a fall.

Donnelly, a senior, stuck her

routine and scored 8.725, good for 22nd.

“It was a little surreal,” Donnelly said. “I never actually thought I was going to get this far. Then I started doing better and I’m like I actually have a chance this year.”

Donnelly got that chance by being persistent.

“That’s the thing, she is such a hard worker,” Downers North coach Linda Reynolds said.

“She’s a leader in the gym and she’s a wonderful kid.

“She earned this so I’m so glad that she got that opportunity to go, because a lot of times, espe-

cially on beam, one misstep and you’re done.

“I was happy she stuck her routine on beam. It’s a wonderful way for her to go out as a senior.”

Donnelly, who also plays the flute and piccolo in the school band, was pleased with how her career ended.

“It is one of my best high school memories,” Donnelly said. “I had awesome experiences because I’m also in band, but I’m so glad that I could get to do this with all of my friends.

I don’t regret anything I’ve done this year.”

I make about $60,000 a year, but it’s a real struggle just to keep my head above water financially. My checking account is always overdrawn, and I don’t know where to start in catching up. GAIL DEAR GAIL, Trust me, I know it can be scary.

But the easiest way to attack this thing is by taking one slow, sure step at a time. Try not to let worry consume you in the process, either.

First, sit down, take a deep breath, and open all the unopened bills.

Throw away any duplicates, and keep only the most recent statements and notices. The unknown is always scarier than the known, so facing the bills and cutting that stack in half right off the bat will help reduce a lot of your initial anxiety. Next, let’s start a debt snowball.

List all the debts you owe, from

smallest to largest, making one column for the payoff balance, one column for the amount you need to get current on that debt, and one column for the single payment amount when you get current. Total each column — the payoff balance, the amount to get current, and the single payment. I promise it won’t be as bad as you think.

Finally, make a monthly budget.

Prioritize your needs, starting with food, utilities, house payments and transportation. When it comes to your debts, pay as much as you can on the smallest one while making minimum payments on all the others. You can do this, Gail. If you’ll follow my plan, I think you’ll see improvement in several areas of your life and you’ll feel good about the progress you’re making, too!

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, My mom is 73 years old, and she’s dealing with depression and a few other mental issues. Is it too late for her to get long-term care insurance?

JULIE DEAR JULIE, It wouldn’t be a big problem if she were healthy. But given her age, and the other struggles you mentioned, I’d check with a good insurance broker to see what’s out there for her.

In the insurance world they call

this “making a market.” Will they be able to find a company that will write her in that situation? I can’t give you an accurate answer off the top of my head, because this is a difficult thing. It would probably depend on things like the extent of her depression, how long it’s been manifested, and what it has done in her life. That’s one of the reasons I’m advising you to see an insurance broker. A broker doesn’t represent just one company; they represent several companies. They can shop around in a given situation, and find someone to write something you might not get written otherwise. D.58 to explores feasibility of Lester addition Administrators discussed Lester School’s space limitations, provided several potential solutions to the Board of Education on Feb. 13 Downers Grove Grade School District 58 administrators discussed Lester School’s space limitations and provided several potential solutions to the Board of Education during the Board’s Feb. 13 regular business meeting.

After reviewing all options, the Board directed District administrators to study the feasibility of building an addition onto Lester School. If the Board pursues this addition, they would aim to complete work in time for the 2018-19 school year.

Superintendent Dr. Kari Cremascoli shared that Lester School has served students at capacity for several years, but recent programming improvements have pushed the school beyond its limits.

“With the addition of the Optional Kindergarten Enrichment and Enhancement Program, the building now is struggling to provide for all general education spaces as well as the necessary special education, intervention and enrichment services, specials

Bein reported that the District would need to hire an architect to complete a high-level feasibility study to accurately gauge potential costs, options, timelines and other needs.

The Board directed the administrative team to work with an

architect to complete this highlevel feasibility study.

The District will provide the Board an update during the Board’s March 13 regular business meeting, with additional information regarding the District’s facility needs and long-term planning scheduled for presentation during the Board’s April 24 Budget Workshop meeting.
