Community Pantry switches distribution model Overhaul creates shopping experience that boosts client self-esteem More than 40 volunteers and staff gathered at West Suburban Community Pantry during over a weekend in January to help the pantry set up for its switch to client-choice shopping according to wpinc.org.

Over three days, they worked together to move products, remove shelving, create a labeling system and clean the Community Pantry to prepare for a new phase in the organization’s history.

“We’re widening the aisles to make it more like a grocery store,” says Joe Jobst, the pantry supervi-

sor. “Clients will be able to choose what they like.”

Clients who visit WSCP an now walk the aisles with a personal volunteer and choose the items they know and like, a trend that is growing among food pantries across the nation. A color-coded labeling sys-

tem for small, medium and large families ensures that households receive the amount of food they need.

Chamber630 celebrates during Boardwalk Ball Annual event also helps fund various programs and non profit groups

It was an evening of celebration, networking and a game of chance.

On Jan. 27, Chamber630 hosted its annual ball to celebrate its members, their support and their leadership.

The Boardwalk Ball, held at the Hilton Lisle/Naperville, is designed to support all the programs that Chamber630 holds throughout the year.

“The event brings chamber members together for a celebration of business success in the area,” said Laura Crawford, president and CEO of Chamber630.

Years ago, the former Downers Grove Area Chamber of Commerce had organized its Black & White Ball for its members to enjoy. When the chambers for Downers Grove and Woodridge merged three years ago, organizers changed the event’s name and decided to make it theme based.

This time around, the ball featured a Monopoly theme. In addition to providing a gift to each attendee, Chamber630 made a donation to one of four not-for-profit organizations in the name of the attendee.

“It’s a way to connect non-profits to business and vice versa,” Crawford said.

Donations were provided to several organizations, including Support Our Troops – America, West Suburban Community Pantry, Sharing Connections and Community Adult Day Center.

Other highlights at the event included a cocktail hour, four-course dinner, live music, dancing, raffles and giveaways.

Chamber630 prides itself on offering an array of programs throughout the year for its members. This includes the Attainable Futures Program for workforce readiness, the Chamber630 Scholarship, Young Professional Network, Women In Business, Hospitality630, Not-for-Profit Network, Manufacturers’ Roundtable, Legislative Impact Network Committee and others.

“As a chamber, our vision is as simple as our mission: the vision of Chamber630 is to be the best chamber of commerce,” Crawford said.

The event was open to Chamber630 members and their guests or future members. This year’s Boardwalk Ball brought in more than 150 attendees.

“The commonality all our members share is that they want to conduct business within the region,” Crawford said. “We offer these businesses top notch marketing opportunities, legislative advocacy, workforce development, and a connection to the residential and business communities of central DuPage County. Every member will find something for all businesses to embrace from one of the committees, networks or referral groups, website presence, annual publication, general membership luncheons, webinars, and a plethora of venues to make connections that create business.”

To date, Chamber630 is made up by approximately 700 members spanning more than 50 municipalities, 70 zip codes and 9 counties.

“Chamber630 is one of the largest business organizations in DuPage County,” Crawford said. “[Our membership] ranges from small, family-owned companies and start-ups to large international corporations and everything in between.”

Crawford said Chamber630 is cognizant of the many success stories it has played a part in over the years and said despite popular misconception, they are clearly focused on the organization’s mission, which is to serve “its members by providing and protecting economic opportunities essential to a successful enterprise.”

1,000 years ago, Illinois had largest city in what would be U.S.

BY SUSAN SARKAUSKAS AND DIANE DUNGEY OF THE DAILY HERALD Centuries ago Illinois was home to the largest and most influential city in what would become the United States, rivaling the size of European cities at the time.

As many as 20,000 people — double that if surrounding communities are included — lived about 1,0000 years ago in the elaborate planned city that now lies within the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site.

Cahokia, east of St. Louis, includes woodhenges — large sun calendars that were built of red cedar posts — and at least 120 mounds and pyramids used to support important buildings and for burials.

Yet, Cahokia is only part of Illinois’ rich American Indian heritage.

Although 101,451 Illinoisans identify themselves as being fully or partly of American Indian descent, the tribes themselves are gone from Illinois, mostly moved west by the federal government in the 1800s, said Bill Iseminger, assistant manager of the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. What’s left are the remains of native cemeteries, villages, cities and mounds, onetime Indian routes that became the basis for many of our modern roads and highways and the names of many things, beginning with our state itself, named for a powerful American Indian group that once called Illinois home.

1,000 YEARS AGO, A CULTURAL CENTER Many different groups occupied Illinois in the centuries before Christopher Columbus set foot on North America.

Archaeologists estimate people came here about 12,000 years ago after migration from Asia over a land bridge began to populate the continent, according to the Illinois State Museum. Over thousands of years, people adapted to a changing climate and became less nomadic as the Ice Age came to a close.

Cahokia was built during the Mississippian Age, which began around 900 A.D. and lasted about 550 years. The city was the political and religious center of Mississippian life, but eventually its influence faded. It was largely abandoned by 1350 A.D., though no one knows precisely why.

Wood, game and other food sources might have been depleted, Iseminger said. There is evidence of long droughts and the climate was cooling.

Where did they go? Probably in many directions, joining other communities or establishing new ones, Iseminger said. The Osage, Ponca, Omaha and Quapaw people are believed to be descended from the city’s builders.

About 700 years ago, as Cahokia was fading, a people called the Oneota emerged in the Illinois River valley. Excavations in Fulton County show half of those buried in an Oneota cemetery died as a result of violence, though it’s not known why, according to the Illinois State Museum.

Were the two cultures at war? It’s hard to say, though there’s evidence of Oneota culture in the Cahokia area. And Cahokia had a large palisade enclosure, indicating a need for defense, Iseminger said.

“The Oneota, as they migrated south, may have been the

final blow of the Mississippian culture,” he said.

STARVED ROCK TO BLACK HAWK By the time French traders and priests arrived in the 1600s, there were two main American Indian groups in the area: the Illiniwek, or Illinois, and the Miami. In the late 1700s and early 1800s, the Illiniwek territory shrank, the Miamis moved eastward, and other tribes moved in.

As Europeans and other outsiders arrived, the Indians traded with them. They allied with the French and the British, at different times. American Indian federations and tribes fought each other, with the Iroquois being notorious for battles against the Illiniwek.

Starved Rock State Park near Utica is named for a stone formation where, legend has it, members of the Illiniwek starved to death in 1769 during a siege by the Ottawa and Potawatomi, who sought to avenge the killing of the Ottawa chief, Pontiac.

By 1818, a War Department study estimated there were at least 10,860 native people living in this area, not counting the Peoria band of Miami Indians. Tribes had already ceded a strip of land at the mouth of the Chicago River to the U.S. government, as well as land near Kaskaskia.

In 1821, the tribes gave up more of northern Illinois.

In 1832, some members of the Sac and Fox nations agreed with a chief named Black Hawk that their land had been illegally taken from them. They tried moving back into northwestern Illinois and western Wisconsin, leading to the unsuccessful Black Hawk War. The 1833 Treaty of Chicago took care of the largest swath.

In exchange for handing over 5 million acres, tribes including the Potawatomi, Ojibwe, Odawa, Sac and Fox agreed to move west of the Mississippi River, according to an 1918 article about the treaty in the Wisconsin Magazine of History.

Many would eventually be pushed farther, which is why the Peoria Tribe of Miami Indians is now headquartered in Oklahoma.

TRIBAL HERITAGE When the French and other Europeans arrived, they learned the tribes’ languages and began naming places and landmarks using the natives’ words. French or English versions of the names stuck.

The settlers also might have been influenced by the Romantic movement of the late 1700s and early 1800s, which placed a high value on nature and folk legends, so the names might have been meant to memorialize the dwindling numbers of natives and their cultures.

Poet Walt Whitman extolled the practice, in “An American Primer:” “All aboriginal names sound good. I was asking for something savage and luxuriant, and behold, here are the aboriginal names. I see how they are being preserved. They are honest words, — they give the true length, breadth, depth. They all fit. Mississippi! — the word winds with chutes — it rolls a stream three thousand miles long. Ohio, Connecticut, Ottawa, Monongahela, all fit.”

There are six counties in Illinois that have Indian-themed names, at least 60 towns, and scores of schools and other places, from Aptakisic Road in Lake County to the town of Wetaug in Union County. Many other roads now have more prosaic names but trace the paths American Indians once used, from the east-west U.S. Route 6, which generally follows the onetime Sauk Trail, to the North Shore’s Green Bay Road, thought to have been a Potawatomi trail.

TRANSITIONING TO SHOPPING The transition started more than a year ago as WSCP realized that other pantries in the area were also moving to shopping.

Formally known as “client choice,” the model implements a grocery store feel to enhance the pantry experience and to make food pantries less intimidating for clients. As its name implies, it offers clients more choices than traditional food boxes, which in turn can boost their self-esteem in situations that may be hurting it.

“That little, seemingly simple act of picking an item off a shelf reminds you that you are capable of making choices for you and your family,” says Executive Director Laura Traut-Coyle. “Shopping is better for our clients’ dignity and confidence.”

WSCP tested the model to get cli-

ent feedback, which showed that clients overwhelmingly preferred the shopping model. Knowing that clients enjoyed shopping, WSCP staff got to work figuring out the best approach for the pantry.

Over six months, staff met with other local pantries that had already made the switch to learn best practices. They asked volunteers, who are on the frontlines of helping clients at every distribution, what would work best. From there, Jobst presented a plan of action to staff and volunteers to prepare for the change.

Even once the aisles were moved around and products restocked, WSCP staff and volunteers spent a week educating clients on exactly what happening.

“We wanted clients to walk through the aisles and see what was going to happen,” says Volunteer Coordinator Denice Kraft. “That way, they won’t be overwhelmed or confused when the switch actually happens.”

Jobst and Kraft explained the new system to the intake team that works directly with clients, registering them and understanding the other needs they might have aside from food. For more than a week, Jobst started each shift greeting clients and warming them up to the changes, explaining how the new model would improve their experience.

“We talked to a few clients, and two of the six like the pantry how it is,” he says at a staff meeting one

morning. “Four of the six are excited for the switch.”

Putting it into action Eight clients waited on Jan. 23, excited to experience the Community Pantry’s new model. Volunteers stood ready with shopping carts to assist. Laura stood at the main entrance to the pantry floor, greeting clients with a brand new, eco-friendly shopping bag displaying WSCP’s fresh and colorful new logo.

Throughout the afternoon, clients wove in and out of aisles with their volunteers, selecting the meats, dairy products and canned goods that they needed.

Clients expressed their love of the new system—which also allows those with limited mobility to “place” an order during the intake process—especially the choice to take only what they need.

“I love it,” one of our clients said.

“Before, with the tables, you felt a little rushed and like you had to take everything. Now, you can just take what you need.”

Weija Chang, an area specialist with Northern Illinois Food Bank, says that the client-choice model does eliminate food waste in addition to providing clients with a

more familiar shopping experience. It also allows pantries to operate more efficiently.

“When pantry guests shop for themselves, the pantry is able to have better inventory control,” she says. “This lessens the guesswork around stocking the shelves and leads to less food waste, making the entire system more efficient and effective in solving hunger.”

A fresh approach for WSCP Creating a grocery store experience is part of a wider strategy by WSCP to focus on its nutritional and holistic approach to food insecurity and poverty in DuPage and Will Counties. The Community Pantry has also introduced a new logo to highlight the core food service it provides and to showcase the fresh foods available at the Community Pantry.

“All of the changes made really started with the people we serve in mind,” says Laura. “We know that the more we can do to provide our clients with a dignified experience, the more likely they are to get back on their feet quickly. Our goal is to provide a positive and hopeful encounter for everyone who comes in contact with West Suburban Community Pantry.”

Early in the season, Benet Academy was winning basketball games but the team was still finding itself along the way.

With a host of players coming over from the football team that advanced all the way to the IHSA Class 7A state semifinal game, the Redwing basketball program had to come together on the fly.

“Our team is meshing and gelling. We have been a work in progress,” said Benet coach Gene Heidkamp. “I had said early in the year that the second half of year would be our best basketball and I think that is happening and we aren’t surprised by that.”

That is evident by Benet’s ninegame winning streak.

“The more we get to play together and the more we get the hang of things, the better we play,” Heidkamp said. “It has been fun to see and we still have a long way

to go and we are still hoping to get better as we go. We’re playing better. We are definitely playing better.

I think we have gotten better as the seasons gone on we’re hoping to keep moving in the right direction, so it’s encouraging.

“You know what else helps us is guys that had football and they didn’t even have a preseason practice. They didn’t come to play until we started playing games already. We have to invest in this last month of the season and our practices have really improved over the course of the season, especially in this last month and it has really carried over into the games.”

The football players themselves also feel the team is getting better as the team plays together more.

Slammers looking for host families The Joliet Slammers presented

by ATI Physical Therapy are seeking local families, couples, and individuals willing to open their homes to host a Slammers player or players during the 2018 season.

The host family program is vital to the success of the team and offers players a home away from home during the season by matching them with local families.

Participants in the host family program receive many great benefits including: two reserved seat season tickets for each player they host along with all season ticket perks, a meet and greet party with the players and other host families prior to the start of the sea-

Individually, Cooney said the time on the court has helped him as the floor general.

“It was a little tough early in the season bringing the ball up and handling the pressure, but now I am starting to get used to it and with the scorers I have around me,” Cooney said. “If I get them the ball they are going to put it in the basket – so I have the easy job.”

As the last couple months of the season roll around, the schedule gets a more regular feel as the tournaments and shootouts are over.

“We’ve got really important games coming up it’s a fun position to be in when you get into February you are playing important games and it will be interesting to see how we handle that,” Heidkamp said.

“We are getting better with our basketball and our play, but also with experience and execution and the maturity in which we handle every game. It is something I’m excited to see with this group of guys.”

With the recent success of the basketball and football programs, Heidkamp knows the players have the experience to face the difficult challenges ahead as the postseason nears.

“There is experience from basketball and football of playing in important games and I hope that shows through,” he said. “I am happy with the way they have handled the grind and how they come

you grow up watching the teams that have played in the past. I was in the stands a few years ago watching the guys play,” he said. “I think it is because of the coaches we have here. Year in and year out, they build a winning mentality.”

‘No cash’ businesses losing Believe it or not, there are still tons of people out there who make purchases only with cash DEAR DAVE, What is your opinion of businesses that no longer accept cash?

HEATH DEAR HEATH, Honestly, I think the whole scenario is kind of silly. Businesses that are suddenly into the “no cash” thing lose out on a lot of transactions. Believe it or not, there are still tons of people out there who make purchases only with cash. So, from a business owner’s perspective this philosophy can cut into your market share.

I really don’t spend a lot of time thinking or worrying about the situation, though. When it comes right down to it, most businesses are doing that kind of thing for one or two reasons. Some of them just think cash is old school, and they want to give the impression they’re cutting edge and into technology. Others do it — depending upon the space they’re in — because their sales using plastic are higher than with

cash.

I’m a cash guy. There are some situations where I might walk away if someone wouldn’t accept hard, cold cash, but in most cases I don’t think anything about it. I’ll just use my debit card, and buy what I need.

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, At what point can you spend, and have a little fun, when you’re following the Baby Steps plan?

JEN DEAR JEN, Everyone likes having fun, and there’s nothing wrong with spending some cash if you can afford it. I just want people to make sure they have their finances in order first.

I recommend completing the first three Baby Steps before you run out and buy a bunch of toys. Just to review, Baby Step 1 is saving $1,000 for a starter emergency fund. Baby
