‘Chicago Fire’ comes to Westmont Episode featuring Westmont Fire Department airs Feb. 19 “It was extremely exciting to have Chicago Fire come to Westmont to shoot one of their episodes,” said Westmont Fire Chief David Weiss. “As you might imagine, many of our firefighters and personnel are big fans of the show.”

On Friday, December 16, the cast and crew of NBC-TV’s Chicago Fire spent the entire day in Westmont filming portions of an episode that airs Tuesday, Feb. 14, 9 p.m. The production crew shot scenes at the Fire-Police Facility at 500 N. Cass as well as the Chicago

Prostate Center on Pasquinelli Drive.

“Not only was it fun to have the TV show shoot in our community,” said Mayor Ron Gunter, “but through the production fees we received, it was agreed that we would make donations for our Fire Safety Trailer, our Burn Camp Fundraiser, and our Emergency Management Agency. We want to be known as a “film-friendly” community and we did our best to accommodate requests while never compromising our services to the community.”

DGS receives recognition for counseling Downers Grove South High School has been designated a Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) school by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). The RAMP designation recognizes schools that “are committed to delivering a comprehensive, data-driven school counseling program and an exemplary educational environment.”

The Counseling and Student Support Services (CSSS) Department includes counselors, social workers, psychologists, nurses, the student assistance coordinator and support staff.

“Every member of our team works daily to care for students, teachers and families, and it is this high level of care that has contributed to our success in earning this achievement,” says Assistant Principal for Counseling and Student Support Services Vince

Mayor touts developments in address Homes, warehouse, business and winery development planned

In her State of the Village address, Woodridge Mayor Gina Cunningham took note of the business community’s desire to thrive. “For without your hard work, your investment in the local economy and community I love, none of this would be possible,” she said.

The Feb. 1 event, presented by Chamber630, was at Woodridge Village Hall. Cunningham said that in 2017, people can expect to see a number of new developments.

In the fall, Cedarhurst will open an assisted living and memory care facility at the southwest corner of Route 53 and 75th Street.

The new development offers 47 assisted living units and 26 memory care units to provide residents with added options as their living needs change.

Construction of Pulte Homes

Uptown at Seven Bridges, though still currently under construction, offers a number of models for occupancy. This 80-unit residential development is comprised of three-story homes within walking distance to entertainment and shopping destinations.

AMS Mechanical Systems is now constructing a 145,200-squarefoot warehouse and corporate headquarters for their mechanical, electrical and plumbing construction services company in the Union Pointe Business Park located near I-55 and I-355. That development is expected to open this spring.

Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurant is relocating their corporate headquarters and winemaking facility to Woodridge’s Union Pointe Business Park. The new location will occupy 121,000-squarefeet and is set to open this summer.

Union Pointe Business Park is currently being developed by Gallagher & Henry Homebuilders and Conor Commercial Real

Estate and adds nearly 1,100 jobs, more than $70 million dollars in investment, four corporate headquarters and more than 1.1 million-square-feet of new commercial space.

“Continuing to build and foster strong and healthy relationships is a primary goal for the village board and myself,” Cunningham said. “If there is one key message from this morning’s presentation, it is that the village of Woodridge has listened and they’ve listened to you.”

Recent village board action brings no increase in the village’s property tax rate and eliminates the 5 percent water/utility tax.

Cunningham said both of these measures illustrate the village’s responsiveness to the business community’s concerns.

“You also said that you were looking for financial incentives to help with business expansion,” she said. “I’m very excited to share that part of the approved 2017 budget includes $160,000 for busi-

ness grants to encourage business expansion and reinvestment in the village’s 19 shopping centers.”

More details on the shopping center grant opportunity will be sent to interested businesses within the next month.

The hope, according to Cunningham, is that area businesses will see the village’s commitment.

“We will continue working together to help our local businesses grow and prosper,” she said.

Turn laundry piles into smiles

Everyone wears clothes, so the whole family should do their share

Do mountains of dirty laundry make your winter days turn gloomy no matter the weather? Does your dog think those piles of unwashed sheets and towels are his personal bed? No matter how big or small your laundry piles are, here are some tips to help you quickly turn those piles into smiles.

KEEP SUPPLIES NEARBY Pre-wash treatment, detergent, fabric softener, bleach, etc. should be within easy reach. Store them on a shelf over the washer, in a bin on top of the dryer, in a nearby cabinet, or on a storage cart next to the washer or dryer. Consider having a spot for empty hangers, a hanging rod, a drying rack (I use one that attaches to the wall) and a wastebasket (for tossing dryer lint).

GET THE FAMILY TO HELP Have a hamper in each bedroom, and possibly each bathroom, to make it convenient for family members to deposit their dirty clothes. Consider using a lidless hamper, since opening a lid is an extra step that may prevent dirty clothes from getting where they belong.

Make family members responsible for emptying pockets and turning socks right-side out. Your family can also help

USE LABELED BINS FOR SORTING You can use separate laundry baskets for each category, hang separate laundry bags on hooks, or purchase a laundry sorter that has a number of separate compartments. Label the containers with the appropriate categories, such as whites, darks, towels, delicates etc. Another option is to sort loads according to family member. Either way, family members should be responsible for making sure that their dirty clothes hamper gets emptied into the proper sorting bin by laundry day.

USE A SEPARATE “CLEAN CLOTHES” LAUNDRY BASKET FOR EACH HOUSEHOLD MEMBER Label the baskets and place folded clean clothes into the appropriate baskets as you empty the dryer. Items that aren’t affected by wrinkling (socks, undies) can be placed into a single basket

for other family members to sort. Everyone can help fold towels as well.

DEVELOP A LAUNDRY ROUTINE One option is to do a load every day or so, as needed. You might choose Monday for whites, Tuesday for bedding, etc. You might want to wash a load overnight and then toss the clothes into the dryer first thing in the morning while you’re getting dressed. You might prefer to do it in one marathon session, devoting a day to doing all the laundry.

No matter what your preference, just be sure you have a laundry routine that you can maintain.

PUT CLEAN CLOTHES PUT AWAY The job of laundry isn’t finished until the clothes are put away. Everyone should be responsible for putting away their own clothes within a predetermined amount of time, e.g., once a week. When clothes have an assigned place to go (e.g., undies in this drawer, pajamas in that drawer, t-shirts on a shelf in closet), putting them away should go fairly quickly.

When everyone who wears clothes in your household pitches in, you can have a simple routine for getting laundry done and clothes put away on a regular basis.

All-star game give area cagers chance to shine Voyager Media hosts All-Star game March 19 at USF In 2008 the Plainfield Enterprise hosted its first preps All-Star Basketball game for area high school seniors. That game featured only Plainfield schools, the coverage area of The Enterprise.

“Prior to 2009, there were three of the four Plainfield high schools,” said Sports Editor Mark Gregory.

When The Enterprise became part of Voyager Media Publications, the coverage area eventually expanded to 15 communities in four counties. Be-

tween The Enterprise, The Sentinel and The Bugle newspapers, the game features some of the best senior athletes from Joliet Central, Joliet West, Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Downers Grove North, Downers Grove South, Westmont, Niles West, Maine East, Notre Dame, Plainfield East, Plainfield North, Plainfield Central, Plainfield South, Minooka, Joliet Catholic Academy, Benet Academy, Maine South, Lockport, Lisle and Northridge Prep.

“After the purchase by Voyager Media we went more north, getting Bolingbrook and Romeoville players involved...then we slowly added Downers Grove high schools then the Niles area schools.”

Voyager Media eventually had to move the event to University of St. Francis in Joliet to accommodate the growing crowd.

“The move to USF really made for a more legit All-Star game,” said Gregory.

“Holding it in a college setting, in a larger venue than a high school gym, really makes the All-Star games something special,” said Pat Ryan, advertising director.

With the move to USF community continued to grow as well, 2016 drew a crowd size of around 500.

“The community has been great,” said Gregory. “Especially in Joliet, where basketball is king.”

“The players respective communities really come out to support their seniors,” said Ryan.

Benet holds sectionals top seed as it attempts to win a third-straight Class 4A state championship

The IHSA playoffs for girls Class 3A and 4A basketball is right around the corner and the Voyager Media teams are ready.

Most of the Voyager Media schools all feed into the East Aurora Sectional complex this season, coming out of four regionals, three of them hosted by local schools.

Benet Academy holds the No. 1 seed in the sectional and hosts its own regional.

The Redwings open play at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14 against the winner of No. 16 Neuqua Valley and No. 17 East Aurora.

“Benet is pleased to receive the No. 1 seed in Aurora East Sectional,” said Benet coach Joe Kilbride. “As in years past, we feel that our strength of schedule has us well prepared for the state tourney. We know that we have a very tough road ahead

with quality opponents in the early rounds but hope to enjoy the ride and see how far we can get.”

The regional championship game on Feb. 16 could have another local team as No. 8 Plainfield North takes on No. 9 Lemont at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 14.

“We are looking forward to having a good regional round,” said Plainfield North coach Reggie Lemon. “This is the best seeding in Plainfield North girls basketball so we need to take advantage of it. Our goal is to get back to the regional championship game from two years ago.”

In the Oswego Regional, Minooka holds the No. 3 seed in the sectional and will open play Wed. Feb. 15 at 6 p.m. against the winner of No. 14 Metea Valley and No. 18 Oswego.

HOF FROM PAGE 8 events, and Pole Vault in her distinguished career and was also a stellar student who went on to achieve greatness at North Central College in Naperville, IL. Megan was an avid runner upon entering high school who immediately got involved with sports and activities. She was a Dancer for the Pintos in the fall, played Basketball in the winter, and ran Track in the spring; setting a Fr/Soph school record in the 400M dash.

In her sophomore year, Megan decided to add Cross Country to her busy calendar and she was on the sophomore Cross Country WSC championship team. In the spring, she helped set a school record as a member of the 4x800 relay team and was a state qualifier in the 3200M relay in the outdoor season. It was during her sophomore year that Megan tried her hand at the pole vault; the event in which she would come to excel.

Megan kept building on her previous successes; winning the WSC in pole vault and 400M, qualifying for state in the pole vault, and earning her first (of several) All-State distinctions placing 8th in 3200M Relay. In her senior year, she was a member of the WSC champion Cross Country team, was WSC champion in numerous in-door Track and Field events, set school records in the pole vault, was a state qualifier in the 800M, and was 4th place at state in the pole vault (11’3”) earning yet another All-State designation.

All of these athletic achievements did not prevent Megan from performing academically in high school. She was an IHSA Scholastic Achievement Award winner, an Illinois State Scholar, graduated in the top 10% of her class, and was presented a Prairie State Achievement Award in Mathematics. If all of these athletic and academic accomplishments were not enough; Megan was also the homecoming queen.

After graduating, Megan decided to accept the Presidential Scholarship at North Central College to pursue her degree in Sports Management and compete in track and field at the premier DIII track program in the nation.

While at NCC, she focused on the pole vault and became one of the nation’s best. She was a seven-time All-American in the event (4 in-door and 3 out-door); and was twice named ESPN The

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2017 | BUGLENEWSPAPERS.COM Magazine Academic All-District V team. She was team captain and also given the Merle Chapman Leadership Award and NCC Senior Influence Award—both recognizing the strength of her character and leadership.

Megan returned to school to earn a Master’s Degree and gain her teaching certification from Rockford College in 2013. She has been teaching at Winnebago middle school since 2012 and is a volunteer coach (pole vault) at Winnebago high school with her husband Jacob and also helps with Cross Country at the middle school. Megan is currently busy raising her family but plans to get more involved in coaching again in the future.

RON HAVELKA Ron Havelka is only the second Head Softball Coach in Downers Grove South history. His career spanned 24 seasons from 19932016 and his teams amassed 704 wins which currently ranks him the 5th winningest coach in Illinois softball history. “Rondo” continued to build the program into one of the best in the state and won a state title in his first year as head coach. The softball program has long been considered one of the strongest at DGS and has helped build the tradition of Mustang athletic excellence. Coach Havelka retired after the 2016 season bringing home another state trophy (3rd) and having gone undefeated in the West Suburban Conference for the ninth time in his career.

Ron was hired in 1993 as the Head Softball Coach for the Mustangs and enjoyed a long and storied career in that role. Coach Havelka credits great athletes, parents, and assistant coaches for the level of success of the program, as well as a supportive District 99 Administration.

He posted a career record of 704-169-3, was WSC conference champions 21 out of 24 years. His teams posted 17 IHSA regional titles, seven IHSA sectional titles, four IHSA supersectional titles, four state place-winning teams.

He coached 16 All-State players and six All-American players.

He was voted sectional coach of the Year by the Illinois Softball Coaches Association five times, was IHSA Softball Coach of the Year in 2016 and ISCA Softball Coach of the Year in 1993 and 2006.

He and his coaching staff were named National High School Coaching Staff of the Year in 2016 by the National Fast-Pitch

DENISE (LAZZERONI) KAVANAUGH Denise (Lazzeroni) Kavanaugh attended DGS from 19781982 where she played volleyball all four years (varsity for 2) for coaches Judy and Rich Griesheim. After high school, Denise attended Illinois State University and graduated in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education. In 1990, she joined the P.E. faculty at her alma mater, began coaching Girls and Boys Volleyball, and a stellar career was born.

Denise quickly moved up the coaching ranks in Girls’ Volleyball at DGS. In 1990 she coached the freshman team and moved up to the sophomore level the next three seasons. In 1994 she became the head coach and took her team to the IHSA state final game finishing 2nd. The next eight-year run saw a level of achievement and excellence that no other sport program has attained at DGS to date. In 1995-96 the team was 3rd place in the IHSA, brought home their first state title in 1996-97, and returned to the title game to finish 2nd in 1997-98. Coach Kavanaugh’s volleyball teams set the standard for excellence and everyone in the DGS community expected deep runs in the state series every year. Denise closed out her coaching career with another great run finishing 5th, 3rd and brought home two more state titles in 1999-00 and 200203; six IHSA trophies in her tenyear career including three state titles! She is one of only two public high school coaches to have three state championship teams.

She posted a record of 359-55.

She was named National Volleyball Coach of the Year in 1999

by Volleyball Magazine and was voted Coach of the Year by the Illinois Volleyball Coaches Association.

She coached 12 All-State players, three Gatorade Illinois Volleyball players After a truly remarkable coaching career, Denise became the Assistant Athletic Director at Downers Grove North in 2003 and became the Athletic Director in 2005; a title she still holds today.

She is still active in club volleyball, is the WSC resource AD for boys’ and girls’ volleyball, and is SEE HOF PAGE 10

GREG KTISTOU Basketball has been a focus for most of Greg Ktistou’s life and he has attained a level of success and distinction at each level of play. Greg was a stand-out player for Hall of Fame coaches Dick Flaiz and Paul Runyon from 1993-1997 and went on to gain success in college, the pro game in Europe and finally forming his own basketball training academy here in Downers Grove.

While playing for DGS, Greg experienced a level of success few others have attained. A two-year varsity player, Greg was named 1st team All-Conference, 1st team All-Area by the Daily Herald and Suburban Life, Area Player of the Year by the Downers Grove Reporter and a top 20 player by the Chicago Sun Times. Greg led the area in points per game (PPG) with 22 and 82 3-point field goals.

In his senior year he set school records for single season 3-point baskets and steals (since broken).

He also led DuPage County in points per game and 3-point field goals.

Greg was never too busy to neglect the academic side of high school. Greg was an Academic All-Conference player, a P.E. Leader and attained a 3.0 GPA. As his senior year came to a close, Greg accepted an athletic scholarship to play basketball at Eastern Illinois University.

His numerous achievements, include team captain and he was named All-Conference in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW). In his senior year, Carthage won the CCIW championship and was ranked #1 in the nation in DIII for most of the season. Greg led the league in 3-point field goals and assists and those Carthage teams were 46-9 while Greg played.

Greg had an extensive nineyear career as a pro player in Europe. He played five season in Greece, one year in the developmental league in the U.S., and played three seasons in Germany.

Not surprisingly, Greg continued to be recognized for his level of play. He was named European Player of the Year and All-League in 2012 while playing in Germany for BG Hagen averaging 20.1 ppg, 4.5 assists, and 3.9 rebounds. He also led the Greek League and German League in 3-point shooting.

Greg’s pro career was cut short when he was diagnosed with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (heart condition) and was forced to retire on the spot; yet his passion for the game remained. He believed that he could continue to have an impact on kids by teaching the core values of success in life through basketball.

To that end, he came back to the area and started Breakaway Basketball, a skill development company that trains players, teams, and coaches in the importance of pursuing their passions in life. He teaches the core values of hardwork, discipline, and a positive attitude in the face of adversity

through the sport of basketball.

“We ended up getting the 21 seed in our sectional which we expected due to our record,” said Plainfield South Lincoln DePaula coach. “Although our record does not show it, we have shown that we can be a tough out when we play consistently on the defensive end and take care of the basketball on offense. We have stressed to our players that anything can happen in the playoffs.

Even though we haven’t had the season we wanted to have, our players are excited for a chance to prove themselves.”

The regional final will tip at 7 p.m. Feb. 16.

Up north, Niles West hosts a sectional complex that features

MARK LENKOWSKI Mark Lenkowski distinguished himself as one of the best and toughest Mustang wrestlers in DGS program history while competing for coach Rick LeBlanc from 2000-2004 and amassing a career record of 127-15.

Mark made contributions to the team immediately his freshman year becoming a varsity starter at 103 lbs. and helping the team win the first West Suburban Conference Gold title in program history.

Mark’s wrestling career took off from there. In the next three seasons, he would collect numerous individual tournament titles, AllConference distinctions, IHSA state series titles, and placed twice in the IHSA Individual State Tournament. He did this while never missing a practice or match due to injury which earned him the coveted “Iron Man” award from the wrestling program.

Mark was a four-time AllConference selection in the WSC-Gold; the only wrestler in DGS history to receive this designation all four years. He also embodied the core values of the athletic program having been named a WSC All-Academic wrestler and also a team captain and MVP. Mark was a three-time DGS invitational champion, two time Hinsdale South Champion, and two-time Sycamore champion and Outstanding Wrestler at that event. An interesting side note, Mark, the “Iron Man” was also a winger for the 2004 undefeated Downers Grove Rugby State Champions.

At the IHSA Regional level, he was a three-time champion

which qualified him for the IHSA Sectional in each of those years.

Mark placed 1st at sectionals each of those years as well. He topped off his career placing twice at the IHSA Individual State Tournament. He was 2nd his junior year at 112 lbs. with a 39-4 record. He followed this up with a 40-3 record his senior year and a 4th place IHSA finish at 119 lbs. When Mark finally placed his shoes on the mat, he owned school records in Career Wins, Technical Falls (season and career), Takedowns (season and career), and Career Team Points; all of which still stand.

After graduation, Mark attended the University of Illinois at Champaign and majored in Economics. He currently lives in the area and is the Managing Director of Algorithmic Trading at Sweet Futures.

JULIE (TODD) MESMER Julie (Todd) Mesmer has the distinction of being the first bowler inducted into the DGS Athletic Hall of Fame. She had a remarkable high school career in bowling from 1999-2003 in which she earned four varsity letters and was a four-time All-Conference selection for coach Bob Topor.

Her impact on the lanes was felt immediately upon entering high school. She was instrumental in helping the Mustangs to their fourth team appearance at the state meet in 2001. As her career unfolded, Julie continued to rack up achievements on the lanes.

She won 6 individual tournament titles including 3 WSC championships and the IHSA Sectional title in 2002 and placed in the top ten of another 7 individual tournaments; all of which prepared her

a trio of Voyager Media teams.

In the Maine West Regional, No. 15 Maine East opens play against No. 19 Von Steuben at 7 p.m. Feb. 13.

The winner of that game would face No. 3 Maine West.

The other semifinal pits No. 11 Niles West against No. 5 New Trier.

In the Glenbrook North Regional No. 7 Maine South opens at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 14 against No. 10 Prospect. If the seeds hold, No. 2 Glenbrook South will wait for the winner in the sectional game Feb. 17 at 7 p.m.

Both Downers Grove South and Downers Grove North will play in the Argo Sectional

for great IHSA series runs.

Julie attracted the attention of the Illinois bowling world in January of 2002. She became the first girl’s bowler in state history to roll an 800 series (801—256, 246, 299). Later that month, Julie rolled a perfect 300 game vs. Morton; the only perfect game in DGS history to date. These truly distinguished achievements led to the Chicago Tribune naming Julie the Prep Athlete of the month.

Her IHSA accomplishments are also impressive. She was a twotime All-State bowler finishing 7th in 2002 and 2nd her senior year in 2003. Julie still appears in the IHSA record book tied for 8th place on the high game list (280).

Also an excellent student, Julie was a member of NHS and graduated in the top 10% of her class.

Julie was also very involved in other activities at DGS including being a member of the golf team for two years and playing French horn in the Wind Ensemble.

After graduation, Julie attended Kaplan University where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Wellness and graduated with honors.

She is currently a licensed U.S. Coast Guard Captain and is the Watersports Administrator for Sammy Duvall’s Watersports Centre in Disney World. Julie resides in Orlando, FL with her husband Jason.

The Mustangs are the No. 10 seed and open with No. 22 Curie at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 13 with the winner facing No. 6 Whitney Young the next day.

The No. 9 seed Trojans open against No. 8 Lyons Township.

The sectional final will most likely be against No. 1 Montini.

CLASS 3A In Class 3A, Resurrection hosts its own regional as part of the Johnsburg Sectional complex.

Resurrection, the No. 9 seed, will open at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 14 against No. 8 Woodstock.

The other regional will see No. 1 Antioch take on the winner of No. 16 Roosevelt and No. 17 Amundsen.

Debit, credit cards same thing to machines Machines don’t recognize the difference, whether you type in a credit card number or a debit card number DEAR DAVE, I take classes online at a public university that is several hours from my home. I tried to pay for my classes the other day, and my Visa debit card was not accepted.

I got a message saying credit cards and cash were the only payment options. How can I take care of this without wasting an entire day driving to campus to pay with cash?

AMY DEAR AMY, Don’t worry, there’s no need for you to drive all the way to campus and back just to pay for your classes. You can run a debit card like it’s a credit card, and they will accept it. The machines don’t recognize the difference, whether you type in a credit card number or a debit card number.

Just select “credit” when it asks for payment method. It’s just like when you step up to pay for some-

thing at the store and they ask the old credit or debit question. You say credit, so you don’t have to enter your PIN (personal identification number), and it all stays in the Visa system.

You’re just using it wrong, and that’s why you’re having trouble.

Just remember this in the future, and best of luck with your classes!

DENISE DEAR DENISE, The downsides are simple. One,

you’ve got to look at the stupid thing every time you’re sitting on your patio. Two, when you get ready to sell it, everyone who looks at the house is going to have the same concerns you have. It’s not going to appreciate in value, and you’re going to have trouble selling it when the time comes.

If you’re willing to put up with those two things, you might get a steal of a deal on this place because no one else may want this house. And when I say a steal, I’m talking around 40 percent off the appraisal. To me personally, it would be enough of an eyesore that I probably wouldn’t buy.

IMEA encourages prep for earthquakes There are several steps people can take to help prevent injuries and property damage at home In recognition of the earthquake risk in southern Illinois from the New Madrid and Wabash Valley seismic zones, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) and local emergency management agencies will promote earthquake preparedness throughout February.

“While we don’t experience major earthquakes with the same frequency as the western United States, some of the most powerful earthquakes to ever occur in the continental U.S. happened along the New Madrid seismic zone about 200 years ago,” said

IEMA Director James K. Joseph.

“We can’t predict when the next major earthquake will occur, but we can help people learn how to stay safe and reduce damage to their homes.”

In conjunction with Earthquake Preparedness Month in Illinois, IEMA is adding a new 30-second TV spot to the Ready Illinois broadcast preparedness campaign, which is aired in cooperation with the Illinois Broadcasters Association (IBA) Public Education Partnership (PEP) program.

The new spot directs people to the Ready Illinois website for information on how to prepare their homes for an earthquake. It will air on IBA member TV stations serving residents of southern Illinois, where the greatest risk of earthquakes in Illinois exists. The spot is also available on the Ready Illinois website at www.Ready.Il-

linois.gov.

Joseph noted that the actual movement of the ground in an earthquake is seldom the direct cause of death or injury. Most casualties result from falling objects and debris caused by the earth shaking. Learning how to “Drop, Cover and Hold On” can help people prevent injury during an earthquake. The phrase reminds people to drop down to the floor, take cover under a sturdy desk, table or other furniture, and hold on to that object and be prepared to move with it until the shaking ends.

There are several steps people can take to help prevent injuries and property damage at home, such as anchoring bookshelves, overhead light fixtures, and large appliances, learning how to shut off gas, water, and electricity and placing heavy objects on lower shelves. More information about earthquake preparedness is available at www.Ready.Illinois.gov.

Again, that’s just a personal opinion.

Keep in mind that if you go through with this, when you get ready to sell it you’re going to lose out on any money you gained in the buy. Someone is going to do the same thing to you. I’m not completely killing the deal, but I definitely wouldn’t buy it to live in.

As a rental? Maybe, if I were going to keep it forever. Because people will always rent. But honestly, I

wouldn’t want to put up with the hassle in either scenario.

Jefferson Jr. High chess makes it a three-peat The Southeast DuPage Elementary Athletic Association’s seasonending chess tournament was held at Old Quarry Middle School in Lemont on January 28.

In order to secure the championship, the Jefferson team beat the undefeated regular season champions, Westview Hills. Jefferson beat Westview by only two points.

Each team had 10 players ranked by skill level, from the first board to the tenth board. Each win was worth one point. Each player competed in four matches against four different schools.

The Jefferson team rose to the top of the tournament in large part to having four individual board winners, who beat the rest of the

competitors at their position.

Rohan Rughani tied at the second board with 3.5 points (.5 for a tie), Zachery Ludewig had a 4-0 record at the fifth board, Dominic Valentino had a 4-0 record at the sixth board and Colin Baker had a 4-0 record at the seventh board.

Bulls/Sox Academy hosting President’s Day camps Academy runs extensive and fun training programs in basketball, baseball, and fastpitch softball The Bulls/Sox Academy announces President’s Day Chicago Bulls and White Sox skills camps for Monday, February 20, at 6200 River Bend Drive in Lisle. All camp sessions are open to 5- to 14- yearold boys and girls.

The President’s Day Bulls Basketball Camp will cover all elements of fundamental basketball; including shooting, ball handling, rebounding and defense. After discovering the correct way to play the game, players will get to participate in fun games to put their new skills to the test. The basket-

ball camp will run from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Groups will be divided by age and ability level. The cost of this fun, day-off-from-school program is $55.

The President’s Day White Sox Baseball Camp will cover all things baseball, such as hitting, fielding, throwing, baserunning and sliding. Players will also participate in fun games to show off their new skills. The baseball camp will run from 1-4 p.m. Groups will be divided by age and ability level.

The cost of this fun, day-off-fromschool program is $55.

The Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bulls President’s Day Combo Camp is the best of both worlds.

The combo camp option gives the two-sport athlete the ability to improve their offensive and defensive game in both basketball and baseball.

Half of the day will be spent on the basketball courts working on fundamentals while the other half is used to fine-tune baseball skills.

This one-day camp will run from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

The cost is only $100 per athlete. The camp will be broken down by age and ability level to ensure proper skill level for everyone. Lunch is not provided; a sack lunch is recommended.

Most common scam reported to Scam Tracker are scams that involve a phone call People say that bad things happen in threes. Tax scams are no different. As W-2 tax forms land in mailboxes and forms are being completed, there are a few things to be aware of when it comes to tax season. Better Business Bureau wants to warn you of these scam tactics: IRS impostor scams. The most common scam reported to the BBB Scam Tracker are scams that involve a phone call or other communication of someone pretending to be the IRS and claiming you owe taxes. Scammers will attempt to convince

victims they will be arrested if they do not pay the fees over the phone. Scammers are sophisticated enough to obtain personal information adding credence to the threat. Payment will usually be asked to be paid by wiring money, pre-paid debit or gift cards or by credit card.

Tax relief scams. Tax returns are complicated. Many people seek professionals’ help to be confident their return is being filed correctly and to maximize deductions. Beware of deceptive advertising claiming to significantly reduce tax liability or to increase the amount for a return. Savvy scammers will use official-looking IRS notices and create credible-looking websites to sway victims into paying unnecessary money or divulging personal information.
