Fire Chief making a difference Dave Weiss impacting life of boy who has Leukemia

The great joy of serving others has not gone unnoticed with one Westmont Fire Chief Dave Weiss, who has been making a big difference in one local boy’s life.

Weiss has been committing his spare time to help bring a smile to the face of Braden Kubish’s, who has been in the fight of his life.

Over the past several years, Braden, now 10 years old, endured several life-threatening situations including the removal of a brain tumor.

Currently, he is going through Leukemia treatment in order to exonerate the deadly disease.

Braden and Chief Weiss became friends through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, after Braden had a simple wish to ride on a fire truck emulating a fireman’s job.

“Little children get attached to

my heart, and those who are very sick with terminal illnesses don’t have the same chances other children do so I try and just do my part,” Weiss said. “Braden had a wish to ride on a fire truck, and I’m just extremely glad I met him.”

Chief Weiss recently went to Central DuPage Hospital to visit Braden on his last day of chemotherapy before his maintenance phase.

Weiss also surprised Braden with a Westmont Fire Department Challenge Coins and a Hat. Back in November, Weiss invited Braden to be part of the Westmont Holly Days Parade and ride on one of the fire trucks with Chief’s family making his wish come true.

This was the last year for Weiss in the Holly Days Parade as Chief, as he has announced his retirement.

Weiss said his family came down and also had the opportunity to meet Braden and ride in the

fire truck with him.

“My family really enjoyed riding in the firing truck and having the chance to meet him,” Weiss said.

“He’s truly just a special boy from

what he has gone through, always having a smile on his face and he doesn’t look at his disease as a illness.”

Weiss said on his last day of

chemotherapy, Braden got up and walked 10 steps in back, which brought a lot of emotion to Weiss because back in November he wasn’t able to accomplish that.

He also said the steady impact of Braden being around his family including his wife has given him motivation to keep going and pushing forward which he one reason why he enjoys seeing Braden frequently.

For someone who has been a mentor, inspirational friend and making Braden’s wish come true, Weiss recognizes he has made a large difference in the little boys life, but he sais what goes unnoticed is the large impact Braden has had on his own life.

“He has given me that gift that life is very precious,” Weiss said.

“He has also shown me the will to recover from something like this, and I have been doing this with kids over the years but Braden has always held a special spot in my heart.”

Downers Grove to host annual Ice Fest More than 45 different ice sculptures on display for February 8-9

The Downers Grove Ice Fest has officially returned for a weekend of fun filled shopping and dining for those of all ages.

The Fest will be hosted February 8-9, with more than 45 ice

sculptures on display.

“We have a live carving Friday night at 5:30 and then Saturday we have the live carving from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.,” said Erin Venezia, Interim Executive Director for downtown Downers Grove.

“These sculptures are so different and unique, it’s definitely something that you do not see

everyday.”

On Friday night, the live carvings will be at the South East corner of Main and Curtis, and on Saturday one is at the Main Street Train Station while the other is directly south of 5150 Main Street.

To go along with the sculptures, a pancake breakfast will also be held Saturday morning from 8 to 11 a.m., with winter crafts at the Downers Grove Library, which will last all day.

“People plan this into their schedule starting in November, it’s nice because the kids and parents love it,” Venezia said. “It’s truly just a very fun winter activity for people to come to.”

This annual activity is something that has been consistent every year, with businesses in the area purchasing the ice sculptures and filling up the streets as spectators.

“People should come out to enjoy the fresh air, the art of the

sculptors, support the downtown businesses and for people to see what spring merchandise is coming in,” Venezia said. “We always enjoy seeing everyone who is apart of the community and people from different areas come down and share the common interest of the ice sculptures.”

A Facility Planning Council formed last fall to achieve this goal.

During the upcoming visioning sessions, the Facility Planning Council will present its initial facility improvement ideas to the community for their thoughtful consideration and feedback. Both meetings will include a hands-on presentation and an opportunity for community members to ask questions and provide feedback. The same information will be presented at both meetings, so community members may attend whichever meeting is most convenient. No RSVP is required. The presentations will be posted online following the meetings.

The Facility Planning Council intends to analyze this feedback and use it to guide the master facility plan it is creating, as well as the next steps in the planning process. Please help District 58 plan for its future together!

FORCE Ashley Konkle brings a physical game to Benet that she hopes to leave behind when she leaves

Transition always comes with its challenges.

For Ashley Konkle, those transitions have been amplified since deciding to transfer from Metea Valley to Benet Academy before the start of her junior season a year ago – a year after earning DuPage Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Year honors, averaging 13.6 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.

“In the summer going into my junior year, I completely tore my ACL and I was back at Christmas,” said Konkle, a senior. “I was not myself, but I did what I could.

This season, I partially tore my ACL in open gym and they had to go in and scope it. I only have 75 percent of my right ACL, but it is doing its job. I am starting to run the court better and cutting better and I hope to help in any way I can.”

Konkle got over the mental aspect of her injury, however, the physical recovery took work.

“I never had the mental aspect of, ‘Oh man, I am coming off an ACL.’ I love the physicality and always use my size to my advantage. I think being physical is the best part of the game,” she said.

Physical is not a word most would associate with Benet basketball. During its recent run of

success, Benet has relied more on great shooters and finesse than a power presence in the paint, but that is what the 6-foot, 2-inch Konkle brings to the Redwings.

“It has been a rough transition because they weren’t that used to me. Coming back from the ACL last year, I didn’t get to play like I normally played and I tweaked it again this season and had to get another surgery and I am just now starting to feel like myself,” she said. “In practices, we are really focusing on getting the ball in the post and working inside out and now we just have to transition that to the game. We are working on it.”

At Bugle Press time, Benet had one more regular season game – an East Suburban Catholic Conference showdown with Nazareth Academy – and without that game, suffered only five losses on the year, all to top teams in the Midwest.

Although they may not be considered bad losses to many, Benet players take them to heart and Konkle likes that.

“Me coming from a public school, I experienced a lot of loss and I have dealt with it,” she said.

“I think what I love most is the way we practice and that they all take the losses to heart and that means there is a reason they are here. I love playing with these girls. They are amazing girls on

and off the court “There are a lot of little things we have to work on. It is more the little things that the skill because the skill is there. It is all about if we want it or not.”

Konkle wants her impact on Benet basketball to extend beyond her days wearing a Redwing jersey. She is hoping her physical style of play rubs off on some of the other players.

“Brooke (Schramek) and I play a lot of post in practice one-onone and hopefully she uses the fact that I use my body against her and she has to work around that.

It has translated over to the game and hopefully she continues to work on that – same with Morgan Demos – she is a freshman and she has great potential and I am there to help her the best I can.”

Konkle will continue her career

at Western Michigan University.

“It felt like home. I visited there three times before I committed and every time I went there, there was something else I liked there more,” she said. “They stuck with me through when I tore my ACL and the whole recovery process and coach Shane (Clipfell) said to me if I came back as good I was he would offer me right away and he did and I respect that.”

Let daughter take care of her own card payments DEAR DAVE, My daughter is in college, and I’ve always warned her to stay away from credit cards. Recently, I learned she got a department store credit card despite my advice. She has stayed within her credit limit, but she has never made any of the payments. At this point, she owes about $3,500.

She’s a good student, and I want to look at this as a young person’s mistake. Should I pay it off for her this one time?

JOSEPH DEAR JOSEPH, You’re right, this is a typical

young person’s mistake. Like a lot of mistakes our kids make, it’s one that’s bad and wonderful at the same time. It’s bad because, if she had just listened to dear old dad, she would’ve avoided a mess.

It’s wonderful, though, because it gives you the opportunity to provide her with a real world, teachable moment.

I understand you wanting to help her out “this one time.” It means you have a good heart, and that you care about your daughter and love her. There’s a reality here, though, I hope you won’t overlook. It’s her debt, not yours. She

knew what she was doing when she signed up for that credit card.

She knew what it meant, what was expected, and she is the one who should have to make good on the repayment. The entire deal is legal and fair.

At this point, my advice is to put your arm around her, talk to her, and lovingly explain where she went wrong and why it was a bad idea. You can even help her find a part-time job if she doesn’t have one right now, so she can pay off her debt and get out of this mess.

But leave the payments to her. My

guess is by the time she finishes working her tail off to pay this debt she will have learned a lesson she’ll remember for the rest of her life!
