Woodridge Library unveils new look Community open house introduces patrons to $1.5 million renovation

The Woodridge Public Library will have a fresh look when it celebrates its golden anniversary in 2017, following the recent completion of a $2 million building renovation.

On Sunday, Jan. 31, library staff invited the community to attend an open house to introduce patrons to the new and improved building, which includes a completely remodeled children’s library and new teen and adult spaces. The event kicked off at 1 p.m. with light refreshments and tours of the building, followed by comments on the renovation process from library staff and a performance by a barbershop quartet.

Library Administrator Susan McNeil-Marshall said the most recent renovation is the sixth time the library has received a makeover in its nearly 50-year history. That timeline began in the basement of an old house on the south side of 75th Street, and McNeil-Marshall said patrons still reminisce about the library’s early days.

“This is such a change for them,” she told a crowd of more than 50 who attended the open house.

The initial portion of the current building was constructed in 1977 and the remainder was built 20 years later in 1997.

McNeil-Marshall, who is set to retire in the spring, said she is proud to oversee a library that has kept

pace with a growing community.

“All the changes that have been made to the library over the whole 50 year period have been because the village has changed,” she said.

“Everything you see in all of these iterations of the building have been the result of the library and the library board over the years responding to the needs of the village.”

The most recent renovation, which concluded in January, was the result of a long range planning process that began in the spring of 2013. To meet the goals outlined in that plan, the library’s board of trustees and administrator concluded that several changes to the building would be required.

“The renovations you see today are the direct result of long range plans that included focus groups of the public, a community survey where we had 600 comments come in and ongoing discussion and comments from the public about what they would like to see,” McNeil-Marshall said.

Some of the major highlights of the project include the addition of five new study rooms; a redesigned computer training lab; a new computer commons, which includes 32 stations and a print, fax and scan center; and an improved teen area.

The new Teen Zone features a reading lounge, gaming center that includes three game systems and a 55-inch display, and a laptop counter and USB charging station.

“Now that patrons are coming in and seeing the place renovated, their very happy with the changes,” said Public Relations Coordinator Patti Naisbitt, who added that equipment upgrades were another important aspect of the renovation.

“We went from unplanned computer spaces to a really wellplanned, laid out computer commons.

So, there’s new computers, there’s more computers and the layout and the way we pulled it all together is a real improvement.”

Perhaps the most exciting change, according to Naisbitt, is the complete transformation of the second floor children’s library.

A wall separating the children’s library from the rest of the second floor was removed, creating more space and a more connected area for children and families.

The library added an early literacy resource and activity center where parents or caregivers can work with their child, as well as a kids play theater and “zone of discovery” that Naisbitt said allows children to learn through play and discovery activities.

“It’s really been transformed into this bright center for learning and growing and playing and reading,” she added. “The feeling is really inspirational. It’s just fabulous.”

Other additions include 10 new computers in the children’s library, an improved Wi-Fi signal throughout the library, and newspaper and magazine center.

Naisbitt said several follow up projects, such as new signage and bookshelf lighting in the adult fiction area, will be completed in the near future.

The village of Downers Grove recently received the 2016 Sustainability Practices Award by the Suburban Branch of the American Public Works Association.

The award recognizes the steps the village has taken to

make sustainable practices a cornerstone of the community.

Downers Grove has used input from the environmental concerns commission, as well as from management, to implement various green initiatives.

Examples of these initiatives include sustainable construction practices, recycling, green fleet practices, water conservation efforts, stormwater pollution prevention and energy conservation.

Registration open for Westmont’s citizens fire academy Team looks to top last year’s $17K fundraising total The Woodridge Police Department will be “Freezin for a Reason” Feb. 19 - 20, when they will again be participating in the SUPER Plunge in support of Special Olympics Illinois.

The SUPER Plunge is an annual fundraising event that invites participants to raise donations in exchange for jumping into Lake Michigan once an hour for 24 hours straight.

The Woodridge team raised more than $17,000 for Special Olympics through their participation in last year’s year’s event and will try to top that total in the upcoming 2016 event.

Officer Daniel McIntyre is the captain of the Woodridge team.

Tully named 2015 Government Leader Downers Grove Mayor Martin Tully was recently recognized as the 2015 Governmental Leader of the Year by the DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference.

Program designed to help citizens better understand department’s operations The Westmont Fire Department announced that registration for the 2016 Spring Citizens Fire Academy is open.

The Citizens Fire Academy program is designed to help citizens better understand the department’s firefighting and rescue operations, as well as the multitude of services it provides to the community. The six-week course is not designed to train future firefighters, but educate residents who are interested in gaining an insider’s view of the lives of professional firefighters and EMS personnel.

The course also provides fire safety training for the home and workplace. Participants experience the world of emergency services through hands-on activities.

There is no fee to attend.

The Citizens Fire Academy will meet Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. for six weeks from March 2 through April 6.

District 99 students, staff perform at state music convention The annual Illinois Music Education Conference was held last weekend in Peoria, and District 99 had a strong student presence at the event.

In addition to the 31 student musicians at Downers Grove North High and Downers Grove South High who were selected to participate in all-state ensembles, South High’s Madrigal Singers and North High’s Wind Ensemble were featured performers during the conference, which is attended by thousands of student musicians and educators from across the state.

The DGS Madrigal singers were selected after a competitive taped submission process. National Certified Board Teacher Laura Coster conducts the DGS Madrigal Singers.

“Performing at the prestigious IMEC is a tremendous honor for us,” said Glenn Williams, chair of the fine arts department. “It’s a credit to our student musicians that the South High Madrigal Singers have been selected to perform.”

In addition to the ILMEA AllState Convention, the madrigal singers are scheduled to perform

at the American Choral Directors Association Regional Convention in Chicago later in February.

“We’re going to be representing all of DGS, so we’re putting in the extra effort so that we represent our school well,” senior Megan Luckett said prior to the performance.

“Being part of the DGS Madrigal Singers and performing at AllState makes me feel like I’m part of something bigger,” says Another madrigal singer, Mariam Mackar, said the allstate performance is a great accomplishment.

“We have a good reputation of being a really profound type of group,” Mackar added Downers Grove North senior and composer Jeremy Pike, an All-State composition contest award winner, had his composition performed live by the DGN Wind Ensemble during the composer showcase at the 2016 IMEC. In addition to student representation at the conference, District 99 faculty members also had leadership roles in the organization.

Later this month, the Polar Plunge season benefiting Special Olympics will kick off with the annual Super Plunge on Feb. 19.

This is a time where we raise awareness on how Special Olympics transforms lives for those of us Special Olympics athletes, and it’s a time to raise funds for Special Olympics. This is the time where individuals in 19 communities across Illinois will be “freezin’ for a reason.” Those who will be taking part in the Polar Plunge will be educating our communities about Special Olympics, as they change the game for a more accepting and inclusive community.

Take, for example, a few years ago, when I had the opportunity to attend a Super Plunge event.

I was there as a podcaster, giving listeners a sound-seeing experience through audio of what a Polar Plunge is about.

While attending the Super Plunge I got the chance to meet a few of the brave people who, despite the frigid temperatures, took that plunge into Lake Michigan.

One of those super plungers was Dwayne English, a Joliet Police officer.

English had chosen to participate in the Super Plunge for a personal reason.

His son, Cole, has Down syndrome and is involved as an athlete in Special Olympics.

“This is just a wonderful program that my wife and I have been a part of for the last 10 years,” English said.

“This is just a great event that brings crazy people together.”

During the Super Plunge, there is a huge white tent on the North Beach, located on the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston.

It is in this tent where the super plungers go and get warmed up before each plunge. Every hour, once an hour, for 24 hours, Super Plungers, like English, leave the warmth of the tent and walk or run like a herd of cows into the freezing Lake Michigan waters.

“The wind is blowing off the lake,” English said standing inside a heated tent just yards away from the lake. “It’s

just a horrible wind. But we only go out there once an hour and we’re only in there for a few minutes.”

Like many who are taking that plunge into the frigid cold water, they do this to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics. As the super plungers learn about Special Olympics, they learn increasingly about the challenges and joys that those of us with special needs experience in daily life. Those participating in the Polar Plunge are beginning to change the world. They are spreading knowledge about the importance of accepting and including those of us with special needs.

I hope that you will learn more about the Polar Plunge, perhaps support someone taking the plunge or take the plunge yourself. Once you do, you will begin to change your community to be a more accepting and inclusive place for everyone. Join me, let’s change the game and get involved with the Polar Plunge.

Sitting at 21-2 overall and ranked No. 2 in the nation, the University of St. Francis men’s basketball team has put itself in national championship contention.

What makes it even more impressive is the way it is doing it - going 5-0 against nationallyranked teams.

“I think the schedule is fun,” Westmont native Jean Pietrzak said. “It is great playing big-time teams. We found we can come and play against the big teams but against the others we don’t show up as much. Our biggest focus is to come out every night and play well.”

“We had a really tough stretch there in the season,” Plainfield South alum Edvinas Presniakovas said of the schedule. “We just kept finding ways to win games.

We have a good thing going. Guys have been stepping up all year. We

want to play the best teams we can to help us prepare for the national tournament. We just want to go down there and show everyone who we can play with.”

Other players had to step up when two starters, including Presniakovas were hurt and missed time a couple weeks ago, but the Saints went unbeaten during the stretch.

“People have fallen down, but it shows that others can step up and take on bigger roles,” Pietrzak said. “We have a deep team and it shows.”

The depth of the team has improved in recent years, but so to have the players, as the Saints took a giant step from last year’s team, which qualified for the NAIA Division II tournament before falling in the opening round.

“We keep getting to know the system better and the guys have gotten more experience with each other,” Pietrzak said. “On top of

We got to the tournament last year and this year the goal is to win a championship. We want to keep improving every year.”

“There has been huge progress,” Presniakovas said. “Every year we keep improving. Our program has gotten even stronger. We’re more mature and we know what it takes to get in the tournament.

A lot of the guys are playing like every game is our last and that has driven us.”

One of those additional players who have grown more accustomed to playing the Saints’ style is JCA alum Breshion Tucker, who is in his second year with USF after transferring in.

“It’s going well,” Tucker said.

“When I made my decision last year, I wasn’t sure what I was getting in to. I knew St. Francis was close to home, but it had struggled

a little bit and was getting better.

My first year I got adjusted to the system and executing it. This year I’ve gotten more used to the system and got accustomed to my role. I knew we had a great group of guys who can get something done.

“I think we’re more mature and our depth is a big thing. We play a lot of teams who play six or seven guys and we can go 10-12 guys. A lot of guys are playing smaller roles than if they went to another team.

They have accepted their roles and they play them hard. That is what really makes our team great.

We’re deep, so that is a big key to the team.”

Tucker is happy with the decision he made to finish his career close to home.

“Playing here, there is more support,” Tucker said. “I know a lot of people around here. It is great. Playing away, sometimes my family couldn’t make the game.

They were able to make like three

games a year.”

With the lofty record and ranking late in the season, the potential for the team is limitless.

“Our No. 1 goal is to win a championship,” Pietrzak said.

“We don’t want to just make the tournament. I think we are going to get something going along those ways.”

“The sky is the limit for us,” Presniakovas said. “We just have to take things game by game.

We want to win conference and make the tournament. From there anything can happen.”

However, the Saints know they have to take one game at a time to get to that stage.

“We’re taking it one game at a time,” Tucker said. “Obviously we want to win conference and win the conference tournament and go to nationals and make some noise. But we just want to take care of ourselves and get better every day and the rest will take care of itself.”

Downers North’s hard work ready to pay off

The Downers Grove North wrestling team did not start out the season as a team looking to make noise at the end of the year, but as the postseason nears and thanks to a lot of hard work – there may be some Trojans with their hands raised in the state series.

“I am really proud of this team,” said Downers Grove North coach Chris McGrath. “They work hard, they have bought into the system, they will give it everything they have all the time. Early in the season, we didn’t have the talent, but a lot of them have caught up through a sure will and determination. There is no quit in this team, but we have some things to do still to get better.”

“What makes wrestling special is that ordinary kids that decide to do extraordinary things can rise above and that is a lot of our kids,” he said. “Take Nick Ferguson, he is our leader and captain and he started wrestling as a freshman and he was awkward and was 4-15 on the freshman team. He has kept working and working and now he has 20 wins on varsity. Work ethic does trump talent, unless talent works, too.”

Ferguson agreed with his coach.

“I have noticed that we came out with a tough schedule and it was a hard start, but as the year has gone on, kids have made the decision that they just don’t want to lose anymore and value the hard work they put in and really go for it,” Ferguson said. “Winning is a

decision.”

Ferguson likes to use a quote by legendary wrestler Dan Gable to equate to what North has done this season.

“His quote is, ‘The first period is won by the best technician. The second period is won by the kid in the best shape. The third period is won by the kid with the biggest heart.’ That is what our team is like,” Ferguson said.

Ferguson is one of the wrestlers looking to make noise in the state series.

“Nate Cummings is our best guy and if Sky Arend comes back from a concussion at 195, he will make a run,” McGrath said. “Austin Maher is doing a nice job at 152, Nick Ferguson is doing a great job at 145. Don’t sleep on Joe Rongaus at 160, he hustles and Jamil Smith at 220 is coming on strong at the end and is getting better. I have no complaints, this team works hard and that is all I can ask for.”

The Trojan wrestlers will not have an easy road to the state finals as they open at the Downers Grove South Regional Saturday at Morton. There are three stateranked teams in the regional according to illinoismatmen.com in No. 4 Lyons, No. 8 Montini and No. 16 Downers Grove South.

North then adds No. 3 Sandburg and Honorable Mention Batavia to the list at the Batavia Sectional the following week.

“Our regional is a bear and then the sectional is even worse,” McGrath said. “Anyone who gets through our sectional should be a state placer.”

That is what wrestlers like Cummings are hoping to do.

“We have a tough sectional, but if I stay on the program I am on, I hope to make it downstate,” he said. “Sectional is like a mini state so if you get there, you are ready to medal.”

Ray Graham Association to benefit from auto show gala The Ray Graham Association is among 18 local charities that will benefit from more than $2.5 million expected to be raised during a blacktie gala that will be raised in conjunction with the 2016 Chicago Auto Show.

Now in its 25th year, First Look for Charity is scheduled for Feb. 12 – the evening before the auto show opens to the public. The event gives benefactors the chance to see hundreds of new vehicles on display amid an elegance not present when crowds converge on McCormick Place during the auto show’s nineday consumer run – Feb. 13-21.

First Look for Charity has become one of the special events on the winter schedules of Chicago socialites and car buffs. About 10,000 attendees at the charity gala will be treated to food, drinks and special entertainment presented by the automakers in their displays.

Complementing the culinary efforts of Savor, McCormick Place’s in-house caterer, are a host of notable Chicago restaurants, including Adobo Grill, Frontier, Joe’s Seafood Chicago, Miss Ricky’s and Real Urban Barbecue, among others. Spirits will be poured by Brown-Forman, Ménage à Trois Vodka, Sugar Island Rum, Tres Agaves Tequila and Trinchero Family Estates.

Those in attendance also have the chance to win a 2016 Lincoln Black Label MKX or a 2016 Jeep

Renegade. “The Chicago Auto Show is uniformly regarded as the finest auto show in the country, but the charitable cause demonstrates that this auto show is about more than just vehicles and accessories,” said Colin Wickstrom, chairman of the 2016 show. “It’s also about giving something to the charities of our community.”

The18organizationsparticipating in this year’s First Look for Charity predominantly are childrenoriented. Some operate on a global level, while others focus their efforts locally. This year’s beneficiaries are the 100 Club of Chicago, Advocate Health Care, Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago, Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Joliet, Clearbrook, The Cradle, Franciscan Community Benefit Services, Franciscan St. James Health, the Ray Graham Association, the Illinois Spina Bifida Association, JDRF, Lurie Children’s Hospital, March of Dimes, Misericordia, Special Olympics Illinois, Turning Pointe Autism Foundation and the Jesse White Tumbling Team.

Tickets to the event are $250 each and can be ordered at www. firstlookforcharity.org. Attendees can direct the proceeds of their purchase to any or all of the benefiting charities. Of each ticket, $203 is tax-deductible as a charitable expense.
