Library choses kindness in February Library hosted special community guests in February including Woodridge Police Chief Cunningham The Woodridge Public Library is wrapping up February’s “Kindness Creates Community,” a variation on the national library February focus: “I love my library.”

“We really do think the residents of Woodridge love their library, but we wanted to focus on

the more important role as a place of community, as a place where local people gather, learn, meet and enjoy,” said Woodridge Public Library Program Coordinator Patti Naisbitt.

The library hosted special community guests in February including Woodridge Police Chief Cunningham and Officer McIntyre, who read stories to children on February 8. Other guests included Brody and Sophie, two therapy dogs brought in by the West Suburban Humane Society for a February 15 program that

taught children safe ways to interact with dogs they meet at the park or in their neighborhood, as well as giving the adults tips on how to help animals in their community. The library’s final kindness-themed program was a showing of “Wonder” during a February 24 big screen movie event for families. This story advocates “choosing kindness,” a theme the Woodridge Public Library will continue to support and encourage for our staff and community in the days and years ahead.

Cure for alcoholism was a boon for business, Dwight From 1879 to 1890, more than 10,000 had taken the Keeley cure

BY MYKE FEINMAN OF THE PAPER (DWIGHT, ILLINOIS) The Keeley Cure initially had gold in it, but the real gold was in the number of satisfied alcohol or other drugaddicted customers who were cured and the social support system from the community of Dwight.

Lynn Neville brought the history of the Keeley Institute to life for those attending a recent meeting of Dwight Historical Society at the Prairie Creek Public Library in Dwight.

The location was appropriate because the building itself is the former clubhouse utilized by patients at the Keeley Institute, located adjacent to the Country Mansion restaurant, also a former Keeley building.

Dr. Leslie E. Keeley, the son of a country doctor, was born in 1832 in New York. He headed West as a young man, graduating from Rush Presbyterian Medical College in Chicago. In 1864, he enlisted and served in the Union Army during the Civil War. “As an assistant field surgeon, he knew opiates were used as anesthesia, as well as alcohol, and the opiates, alcohol and tobacco were also often used in excess by the soldiers ... and they became addicted,” Neville said.

Keeley’s theory was that drunkenness is a disease.

“Keeley suspected that the alcohol, opiates and tobacco contained ‘toxic germs’ that — taken in large and repeated quantities — poisoned the brain, altered the cells and resulted in a disease,” Neville said.

Keeley came to Dwight in 1866, working as a traveling doctor on a 400-mile circuit.

While doing his house-call medical duties, he also worked on a cure for drunkenness. Major Curtis Judd, a prominent businessman in Dwight, became Dr. Keeley’s brother-in-law in

1888, and was a major financial backer for Keeley.

Keeley and Judd were two of the institute’s founding members. The third founding member was an Irish chemist, John Oughton, who joined Keeley in search of a cure.

“In 1879, after years of research and experiments and with Oughton’s help, Keeley was able to proclaim, ‘Drunkenness is a disease … and I can cure it,’” Neville said.

He created the Double Chloride of Gold Cure For Addictions. The cure was also sold through mail order. It was, however, never patented because then the formula would have to be disclosed.

From 1888 to 1895, the mail-order cure cost $5 for tobacco (about $140 in today’s dollars), $9 for alcohol ($250 today) and $10 for opium ($280 today).

From 1879 to 1890, more than 10,000 had taken the Keeley cure.

“As the Dwight Institute location started to be overwhelmed with patients, Keeley, with a vision of serving the world, decided in 1890 to 1891 to begin to open franchises. Between 1891 and 1965, the Keeley Institute had more than 126 Keeley franchises in operation.”

With the prosperous enterprise, “Keeley had visions of bringing thousands more people to Dwight for the Keeley Cure, but the Dwight infrastructure was lacking with no electricity, poor roads, poor sidewalks, and the need for water and sewer line improvements,” Neville said.

Because Dwight officials knew other cities were courting Keeley to relocate his headquarters, talks were conducted in 1891 between Dwight officials and the Keeley Co. to work together to improve the village and keep the Keeley Institute in Dwight.

Among the improvements was the construction of the Chicago and Alton Railroad depot (now the home of the Dwight Historical Society).

At the peak of the Keeley years, 17 trains per day were stopping in Dwight, serving 700 new patients arriving each week. New arrivals were greeted by townspeople and staff at the train stop.

“Keeley patients were free to shop and walk the streets of Dwight, returning to the Institute for the lectures and

counseling sessions, meals and for the gold cure injections and tonics,” Neville said.

Townspeople knew the rules: no gambling, no driving cars, no fraternizing between male and female patients and absolutely no sodas or alcohol.

“Tavern owners would watch out for Keeley patients and report a patient who tried to buy alcohol.”

By the 1890s, the Keeley was reporting that at least 300,000 people had been treated.

But along with success came copycats. Because there is nothing proprietary about the cure and it wasn’t patented, by 1900 there were 800 other “gold cures.” The number of Keeley franchises dropped to 70.

In 1900, Keeley changed the formula to eliminate the gold in the cure. He died that same year at age 68. Major Judd retired and John Oughton lived in the Manse (now the Country Mansion) and by 1916 was the sole owner of the business.

Oughton’s oldest son, Dr. James H. Oughton Sr., was the medical director at the Keeley. But with prohibition around the corner, business continued to slow.

In 1892, the annual gross revenue for the Keeley was $727,000 in 1892 dollars.

By 1920, after Prohibition went into effect, revenue fell to $75,000.

Dr. James Oughton was named president of the Keeley in 1925 after the death of his father, and the formula was changed again, with the term used as “tonic medicines.”

Prohibition was repealed in 1933, and the income spiked to more than $180,000 with 900 treated that year.

Throughout the history of the institute (which closed in 1966) the cure included many of the same supports, such as mutual sharing of difficulties, Alcoholics Anonymous roundups, church attendance, vitamin therapy, and nutritiousness and exercise.

“The Keeley Institute was good to and for Dwight,” Neville said, “and Dwight was good to the Keeley.”

When Downers Grove North diver Kevin Sullivan finished seventh at the state finals his freshman year, it marked him as a potential future champion.

The road to glory was bumpier than he had hoped, but Sullivan did reach the promised land.

The junior became the first diver in school history to win a state championship Feb. 24 when he racked up a pool-record 535.25 points at Evanston High School.

Sullivan beat Evanston senior Harel Anolick by 20.35 points to complete an undefeated season that saw him break five pool records and the school record.

“It’s pretty cool,” Sullivan said.

“It was a great group of guys out there, good competition.

“It felt good to go up against all of them and it feels pretty good to beat them. It’s a pretty big accomplishment, especially (considering) how good some of them are.”

Indeed, the field included three-time medalist Eric Correa of Mount Carmel, a senior who has committed to dive at Arizona.

Correa finished sixth two years ago – one place ahead of Sullivan – and was the runner-up last season.

But Sullivan took the lead during the preliminary round on Feb. 23 and never surrendered it during what turned into a three-man race with Anolick and Correa, who wound up third with 505.85 points.

Ironically, Correa’s total was the

highest of his four state appearances, but it couldn’t compare to his friend Sullivan.

“It was a blast (going against Correa),” Sullivan said. “He’s a great kid, great competition. It’s just a lot of fun to play around with all those guys.”

Sullivan led Anolick by 1.2 points after the prelims and extended the cushion to seven points after the semifinal round, which cut the field to 16. He wasn’t perfect, though his total is the third-highest in the history of the state meet and 20 points shy of the state record.

“I had a couple shaky hurdles but I just tried to work with them, see what I can get out of it,” Sullivan said. “Maybe next year (he’ll get the record).”

Sullivan certainly has the talent to do it. His personal best is 595.80 points, which he racked up in winning the Downers Grove North Sectional the week before. That is 40 points more than the state record, which can only be set at the state finals.

While Sullivan credited Downers North diving coach Tony Ciezadlo for his success this season, Ciezadlo implied he was just along for the ride.

“I’m just happy to be a part of it and work with Kevin,” Ciezadlo said. “He’s a great kid, great person to work with.

“He’s just a great human being, outside of his diving talents.

Lisle’s great run comes to a close in postseason

With 5:52 remaining in their Class 2A Lisle Regional Championship Game with Seneca (1812), on Friday night, Lisle senior forward Cam Stitt went down.

Stitt who was hammered going for an offensive rebound, by Seneca’s big men, must have thought it was “de ja’ vu’ all over again”.

Quoting the late, great Hall of Fame baseball catcher and philosopher, Lawrence “Yogi” Berra, Stitt sprained an ankle. The same ankle that he sprained during the Lion football season. And the same ankle that he has sprained

four times, in his Lion sports career.

The never-say-die Lions immediately rallied, behind 6-foot5 Jakub Kowal, who would bring, the Lions within 27-25, with an old-fashioned three-point play.

Kowal scored again, to once again bring the Lions within two, at 2927 with 3:47 left.

Committing four of those, in the last two minutes of the game and Seneca, nailing seven of eight free throws, ended the Lisle season, 40-31.

The Lions missed 30 of their 41 field goal attempts, for a paltry 27% shooting percentage. They made only eight of their 13 free throw attempts. With the 24 turnovers ,one can understand how their amazing 16-game winning streak and the 2017-18 season has come to an end.

Stitt had eight points, all in the third quarter and hauled down six rebounds and added a steal.

“It was the same ankle that I injured during the football season,” Stitt said. “ I am proud of my teammates effort and I thought they were going pull the game out for me.”

The championship was made sweeter by the sweat Sullivan expended over the past two years, not all of which came in the pool.

He missed all of last season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum in his hip.

The surgery in November 2016 was followed by six months of rehab before he could resume diving.

“I was a little nervous about that,” Sullivan said. “I wasn’t 100 percent sure I could come back, but the surgery was 100 percent successful and I’m 100 percent back.

Along with Stitt, 6-foot-3 senior Jonas Wilke, was huge in the third quarter.

Wilke, picked up a huge steal and five rebounds. The Lions kept missing and Wilke grabbed three offensive rebounds, to keep the Lions close.

“I was happy to be able to play tonight, returning from injury,” Wilke said. “I was happy to do all I could to help us comeback.”

Lion junior Jay McGrath, picked up a game-high five steals but only scored two points from the free-throw line.

Let’s look at the outstanding overall body of work for the Lions.

They close out the season at 20-10. They are the 2017-18 Interstate 8 Conference Tournament Champions. They finished the I-8 regular season in second place.

And they ran off an amazing 16-

game winning streak.

“We had a great season!,Tincu said. “We won 16 games in a row.

Interstate 8 Tournament champions and we won 20 games. I am very proud of what we accomplished this year.”

“Cam’s (Stitt) is a key part of our defensive plan for our comeback,” La Scala said. “Cam had just got into a rhythm offensively, when his injury occurred. It was a bump in the road. We rallied without Cam and closed to one (32-31), which I was proud of our effort. “After we closed to one, I think we didn’t get good looks and hit the panic button.”

“We had problems with turnovers, all year and turned the ball over too many times.”

“No one has given more to our program than Devin Tincu,” “To start out 4-9 and then win 16 games in a row, is a great feat.

This team did not quit. 20-wins and Interstate 8 Tournament champions. I love these kids because they never quit.” LaScala added.

“It was a good reset. I wasn’t diving that well before my surgery and then it just kind of sparked a little plug again.”

Sullivan entered the meet as the solid favorite, but he said a boisterous cheering section helped him overcome any nerves during the competition.

“I felt pressure,” Sullivan said.

“It’s hit-or-miss with all my dives, so I’ve got to trust in what I can do (because) I know the other guys can really hit their dives.

“I had a really great group be-

hind me with the (Downers North) women’s dive team coming out to cheer me on and my parents. It was good.”

So what made Sullivan the best?

“Consistency and work ethic,” Ciezadlo said. “He did in the meet what he did in practice.

“He added a couple dives – a reverse 2-1/2 and a piked inward 1-1/2 – so he added the degree of difficulty that he needs to compete against the kids who are in the finals this year. It was very impressive how well he came back.”

Quit work for school not good plan DEAR DAVE, My wife and I have $72,000 in debt from student loans and a car loan. We’re trying to pay off our debt using the debt snowball system, and we each make about $45,000 a year. She’s a teacher, and she’s planning on going back to school for her master’s degree, but she’s thinking about quitting her job to do this. She’ll be able to make more money with the additional education, and she would only be unemployed for two years.

The degree program will cost us $2,000 out of pocket per semester

for two years. Does this sound like a good idea?

CHRIS DEAR CHRIS, There’s no reason for your wife to quit her job to make this happen.

Lots of people — especially teachers — hold down their jobs and go back to school to further their education. I’m not sure trying to make it on one income when you’re that deep in debt is a good idea.

Whatever you do, don’t borrow more money to make this happen. Cash flow it, or don’t do it.

We’re talking about $8,000 total,

and you’ve got $72,000 in debt hanging over your heads already.

My advice would be to wait until you’ve got the other debt knocked out, then save up and pay cash for school. You could slow down your debt snowball, and use some of that to pay for school, but I’d hate to see you lose the momentum you have when it comes to getting out of debt.

The choice is yours, but don’t tack on anymore student loan debt. I know her income will go up with a master’s degree, so from that standpoint it’s a good thing to do.

But if you do a good thing a dumb way, it ends up being dumb!

—DAVE Dear Dave, My grandmother passed away a week ago. She was 98, and I know both she and my grandfather had pre-paid for their funerals in 2004.

However, there were outstanding costs of $1,500 with the funeral services we had to pay out of pocket, because she had outlived the insurance policy attached to the prepayment plan. I know you say it’s always better to pre-plan, not prepay, for a funeral. Can you refresh my understanding of this?

REBECCA DEAR REBECCA, Let’s use a round figure, and say the cost of a funeral is $10,000.

What would $10,000 grow to 25 years from now if it were invested in a good mutual fund? Now, juxtapose that number with the increase in the cost of a funeral over that time. The average inflation rate of consumer-purchased items is around four percent. So, the cost of funerals, on average, has risen about four percent a year. By comparison, you could’ve invested that money, and it would’ve grown at 10 or 12 percent in a good mutual

fund.

Now understand, I’m not knocking folks who are in the funeral business. But lots of businesses that provide these services realize more margin in selling pre-paid policies than they do in caskets.

In other words, they don’t make as much money selling the casket as they do selling a pre-paid policy on the casket.

Do you understand my reasoning? If we knew the exact date she pre-paid, and how much she prepaid, that figure invested in a good mutual fund would be a whole lot more than the cost of a reasonable funeral. It’s the same principle behind the reason I advise folks to not pre-pay college, or just about anything else, that’s likely far into the future. The money you could’ve made on the investment is a lot more than the value of pre-paying.

Pre-planning, on the other hand, is a great idea for many things — including funerals.
