Commissioner sworn in as new COD trustee David Olsen has served as commissioner and was named mayor pro tem last year A commissioner on the Downers Grove village council was recently appointed the newest trustee on the College of DuPage Board of Trustees.

David Olsen, 27, was sworn in by the Judge Liam C. Brennan at the College of DuPage Board of Trustees Feb. 19 meeting.

Olsen will serve as the seventh trustee on the board until the next consolidated election, scheduled for April 2017.

College of DuPage’s acting interim president, Joe Collins, said Olsen is an “excellent addition” to the board.

“His background as student body president at the University of Illinois demonstrates a strong commitment

to students,” Collins added. “The college’s most important focus – now and always is the success of our students.”

Acting Board Chairman Deanne Mazzochi also welcomed Olsen to the board.

“He is well respected throughout the district and will be a good and credible representative to the community,” Mazzochi said. “We ask only that Trustee Olsen exercise his best judgment for the good of the college.”

The college said the board is planning an aggressive meeting strategy to tackle a variety of issues in the next two weeks, including issues raised by the Higher Learning Commission.

The board also plans to hold its next organizational meeting early in April, after students select a new student trustee.

Park District receives 1st place in logo design competition Staff accepted the award at the IPRA state conference, which took place Jan. 28-30 The Woodridge Park District announced last week that it a firstplace award in the logo design category during the Illinois Park and Recreation Association’s Agency Showcase Competition.

Park district staff submitted the logo for the Athletic Recreation Center, which is currently under construction at the intersection Janes Avenue and 83rd Street.

Staff accepted the award at the IPRA state conference, which took place Jan. 28-30 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago. More than 40

member organizations from around the state participated in this year’s competition, which recognizes excellence in communications, marketing and design.

The logo design category required entrants to submit one logo created or updated during the 2015 calendar year, along with a description of 150 words or less describing the rationale behind the design.

Par districts were also asked to submit a printout of the logo.

“All entries were judged on

four main categories – originality, adaptability, color usage and scalability – and the ARC logo scored very high in all of them,” Pettit said “It was designed to be simple, yet bold and to have the ability to have multiple layout options.”

She added that the colors red and grey were chosen to compliment the interior colors of the facility, while the white “ARC” was positioned in the middle of the graphic to represent the name of the facility and to give dimension to the logo.

The department said its prescription drug disposal program has been extremely successful, collecting 1,191 pounds of prescription drugs from 573 residents in the two years since it launched the program.

Special services programs help students with disabilities make strides Program highlights given during Feb. 17 board meeting District 58’s assistant superintendent for special services, JessicaStewart,presentedanupdate on special services programs with the board of education during its Feb. 17 meeting.

Stewart said the district’s staterecognized special services help ensure all students have the supports they need to succeed both in school and at home, as well as prepare them for the future.

District 58 strategically places specialists in each building who address a variety of individual student needs. The district said it also offers flexible grouping and scheduling, as well as preventative

services and specialized technology access to meet student needs.

District 58 said it attempts to keep all students in-district, but added that there are some students with unique educational and health needs who require specialized instruction beyond the district’s scope. These students are outplaced into private facilities or alternative day programs, such as the School Association for Special Education Cooperative and Southeast School.

Stewart noted that between 2008 and 2013, the number of students being outplaced more than doubled, as more students

requiring these extra supports entered District 58. In response to this trend, the special services department evaluated these unique needs and developed new, highly specialized in-district programs that could accommodate some of these students.

She said these efforts helped redesign the district’s developmental learning program, which serves students with known or suspected intellectual and/or communication disabilities.

Additionally, the district launched the behavioral, emotional and social training program last year, which replaced the former alternative education program. The BEST program helps students with emotional and social development disabilities.

This year, the district began the reaching independence through structured teaching, or RISE, program. RISE specifically serves students with known or suspected autism spectrum disorder.

The DLP, BEST and RISE programs all employ highly trained certified staff and specialists who work together to meet the needs of students in an individualized and inclusive environment, according to the district. Since 2013, the number of students outplaced has remained stable, decreasing for the first time in 2015.

Stewart added that District 58 has an organized continuum of services to ensure each student is well served in the least restrictive environment, which allows as many students as possible to still participate in general education classes. She also noted that the district recently began using a new software program called PowerIEP, which streamlines student IEP information for teachers and specialists.

District seeks community input on 2017-18 calendar Survey will be open through March 4

Community High School District 99 has opened an online survey to gage community input on a new type of calendar for the 2017-18 school year, which would align the end the first semester with winter

break. The survey – available at www.surveymonkey.com/r/ JVVLYXF – will be open through March 4.

Everyone in the District 99 community is invited to respond.

Traditionally, District 99 has followed a school calendar that ends its first semester in January, after a winter break.

Many high schools in the area have adopted a calendar that ends the first semester before the winter break, and District 99 is considering adopting this type of calendar for the 2017-18 school year.

“Shifting our calendar to end the first semester before winter break is appealing to many people, primarily because it would allow students to finish a semester of work and enjoy a true break during the winter holiday season,” District 99 Superintendent Mark McDonald said. “This will fundamentally change our calendar, though, in that we will either need to start the school year earlier in August and/ or delay the start of our winter

District 58 is also monitoring state initiatives and potential budget changes, as well as any possible impact on the district’s special services program.

Business Report Controller James Popernik reported to the board of education that the 2015-16 budget appears to be on track, but noted that education fund expenditures are running about $700,000 higher than last year.

He said District 58 has received the state’s general state aid payments but is still waiting on the state’s categorical payments. He said the medical reserve fund is on budget.

As in previous years, Popernik said cash flow will likely become an issue in the spring, and District 58 will again request loans from its working cash fund to its education fund.

At its Feb. 1 meeting, the District 99 Board of Education approved the 2016-17 school calendar, which follows a traditional schedule.

However, the majority of the board members expressed a desire to adopt a calendar for 2017-18 that would have the first semester end before the winter break, while also adhering as closely as possible to the school calendars of associated elementary and middle school districts.

District 99 said it has worked in the past to collaborate with the elementary and middle school districts to coordinate calendars, allowing students in the community to follow similar school schedules.

District 99 receives students from District 58 (Downers Grove), District 60 (Maercker), District 61 (Darien), District 66 (Center-Cass) and District 68 (Woodridge), as well as many private schools.

The Board of Education is expected to discuss the 2017-18 calendar at its May 2 meeting.

Pet Promenade to offer fun in park with furry friends Event scheduled for March 15 at Ty Warner Park The Westmont Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau and the Westmont Park District are preparing for the fifth annual Westmont Pet Promenade and Party in the Park.

The event is scheduled for May 15 at Ty Warner Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and will be held in conjunction with the Westmont Park District Touch-a-Truck & Flying 4 Kids events.

All of the events are free and open to two and four-footed participants.

“This event gets bigger and bigger each year and continues to be a great

Downers Grove man sentenced in fatal DUI Thomas Fitzsimons, 48, of Hinsdale, killed during 2013 DUI

A Downers Grove will serve one year of periodic imprisonment in the DuPage County Jail for a 2013 DUI accident that killed a passenger in his vehicle.

William Devero, 51, of the 5400 block of Washington Street, was sentenced Feb. 19, after pleading guilty in August to one count of aggravated DUI. The fatal crash claimed the life of 48 year-old Thomas Fitzsimons, of Hinsdale.

The accident occurred just after midnight Sept. 22, 2013.

According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, Decero and Fitzsimons were traveling on Spring Road just south of 31st Street in Oak Brook.

Decero, who was driving Fitzsimons’ vehicle, lost control of the vehicle, swerved off the road and crashed into a wooded area.

Following a 911 call from a neighbor, authorities from the Oak Brook Police Department arrived at the scene and found both men still in the vehicle.

Both men had been wearing their seatbelts. Fitzsimons was pronounced dead at the scene, and Decero was transported to a local hospital and treated for his injuries.

An investigation into the crash revealed that Decero had a blood alcohol content of 0.139, according to the state’s attorney.

On Aug. 14, 2015, Decero entered a plea of guilty to one count of Aggravated DUI, a Class 2 Felony.

“This is a tragic case in which there are no winners,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said. “Mr. Decero’s horrible decision to get behind the wheel after he had been drinking cost a life-long friend his life and devastated two families.”

Decero will begin serving his sentence immediately, but will be allowed to leave the DuPage County Jail during his sentence for work and counseling sessions. He will also be required to serve four years of probation following his release, according to the state’s attorney’s office.

“Today’s sentence will never erase the pain that both of these families still feel to this day,” Berlin added. “The sad truth is that had Mr. Decero not made the decision to drive after he had been drinking, Mr. Fitzsimons would be alive today and Mr. Decero would not have to live the rest of his life knowing he is responsible for the death of his friend, Thomas Fitzsimons. I offer my sincere condolences to Mr. Fitzsimons’ family and friends as they continue grieving their loss.”

Aggravated DUI is a Class 2 felony.

A few months ago came some alarming health news.

“Diabetes nation? Half of Americans have diabetes or pre-diabetes,” screamed a Los Angeles Times headline.

WebMD weighed in with “Diabetes a Concern for Half of Americans.” NBC News announced, “Half of Americans Have Diabetes or High Blood Sugar.”

What was missing from these stories was the fact that the definition of who has the disease has been expanding, and a new disease called pre-diabetes has arisen from the changing definitions.

That means, of course, that more people will get costly drugs when they might not need them and put themselves at risk from complications arising from blood sugar that is controlled too tightly. Evidence is coming in that shows blood sugar levels can become dangerously low especially for older people, according to a study reported in 2014 in JAMA Internal Medicine.

That study noted other research that showed drugs which lower blood glucose have been implicated in 25 percent of emergency hospitalizations for older people.

The lowering of the diabetes threshold is a good example of how politics and money influence guidelines not only for diabetes but also for high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and many other conditions.

Although diabetes medicines are necessary for people who truly have the disease, “not everyone accepts the claim that half of all Americans have either diabetes or pre-diabetes, primarily because not everyone accepts the rigid boundaries and the lower boundaries that now start labeling you as prediabetic if your hemoglobin A1C test comes back at 5.7 percent or higher,” my colleague Gary Schwitzer wrote in Health News Review. (Hemoglobin A1C is a test used to screen and test for diabetes.)

One of those who doesn’t is Nilay Shah, Ph.D, a researcher at the

Knowledge and Evaluation Research Unit at the Mayo Clinic, who told me the focus has been to get blood sugar numbers lower, but “getting it too low may not have potential benefits for patients.”

The American Diabetes Association considers people with A1C levels of 6.5 percent and higher to be diabetic; those with levels lower than 5.7 percent are normal, and everyone else is prediabetic.

These definitions have shifted over the years to include more patients, and as doctors label them diabetic or prediabetic, sales of drugs to treat these conditions have risen.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in a series on drug safety that should be required reading for every patient pointed out that before 1997 when the American Diabetes Association lowered the threshold for who qualifies as diabetic, 9.7 percent of American adults were considered diabetic. By 2014, 11 percent of adults were now diabetic.

In 2003 the threshold was lowered again, and in 2008 professional organizations like the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists said that drugs could be used to treat pre-diabetes “with careful judgment.”

The next year the sales of diabetes drugs reached $15 billion.

In 2010 when the American Diabetes Association said the A1C test could be used to diagnose pre-diabetes, nearly 22 percent of the adult population was considered pre-diabetic.

In 2013 the professional groups issued another statement saying that pre-diabetics can be treated with drugs if diet and exercise don’t work.

That year sales of diabetes drugs hit $23 billion. Setting guidelines is hardly

straightforward. In fact, the process is “absolutely” fraught with politics, Shah said.

“There are a lot of different incentives people have that make it tough to figure out what the right numbers are.”

Many members of the guidelines committees have strong ties to the pharmaceutical industry.

Most of the time, but not always, those ties are disclosed in reports and published papers, and a patient can see that a drug company may have funded a committee members’ research.

Do those connections make it more likely members will vote to expand the market for a company that’s been generous to them? Do they make it easier to overlook evidence of harm caused by a particular drug?

Those new definitions of who has diabetes raise questions for millions of Americans with A1C levels in the prediabetes range. Should they take these drugs, change their diet or exercise more?

“It’s increasingly acknowledged that setting the targets for lowering blood sugar should be done with doctors and patients based on what they believe is important and the benefit they are likely to derive,” Shah says.

The Mayo Clinic offers decision tools for patients to help them weigh risks and benefits of particular drugs.

The Shared Decision Making National Resource Center http:// shareddecisions.mayoclinic.org/ offers guides and information that should be helpful as patients work their way through the confusing, often misleading, and sometimes-scary claims about diabetes medications.

CHAMPAIGN - Downers Grove South only sent two wrestlers to the IHSA Class 3A state wrestling finals last weekend at the State Farm Center on the campus of the University of Illinois.

Both Tyree Johnson and Zach Muller, however, earned medals becoming only the third Mustang duo to medal in the same season and the first since Sam Apland and Willie Anaya did it in 2011.

Johnson (31-5) placed fourth at 145 pounds after placing sixth a year ago. He is only the sixth South wrestler to win multiple state medals.

“I was coming off a collar bone injury from football, so one of my main goals was to place higher than I did last year and I did that,” he said.

Johnson opened the tournament with two wins in a row, defeating Nick Catalano of Conant 11-7 and beating Jake Wright of Grayslake North 5-3.

In the semifinal, Johnson fell to eventual state runner-up Shayne Oster 3-1.

“That loss really hurt me,” Johnson said. “But I told myself that the greatest asset an athlete can have is short term memory.”

Johnson earned his way into the third-place match with a 9-2 win over Brad Gross of Marmion Academy.

In that match, he fell 2-1 in a tiebreaker to Jackson Schoen of Lake Park.

“I wrestled way better than I thought I would just being physical and being on the offensive,” Johnson said. “That was a good accomplishment for me.”

Like Johnson, Muller also opened the meet with a pair of wins at 285, as he defeated Huntley’s Dom Swanson Dec 4-3 and then won 3-2 in the ultimate tie breaker over Tommy Helton of York.

“We used to be practice partners over the summer with our club,” Muller said of Helton.

“It was a fun match, I had to work for it. It feels amazing, I have been working so hard and it was great to get top six in state.”

Shooting woes hurt DGS in regional semifinal loss Benet wins regional title; DGN falls in final

While the season came to an end for Downers South last week in its own regional semifinal game, the future looks bright as many of the key players will be returning next year.

In fact, all but one point in the 47-31 loss to Lyons will be returning next year.

“The future is definitely bright,” Downers South coach Lyndsie Long said. “We have a very young team. I’m playing two freshmen and three sophomores a lot of playing time. I just wish it could have lasted a little longer this

year.”

It was sophomore Jennifer Masello who led the team in scoring with 10 points, while junior Addyson Wesolowski added nine points.

In the game, the Mustangs fell behind early 8-2 and never held the lead in the game. They went into the locker room trailing 2719 as Lyons converted multiple

What was worse than the loss was the fact that Muller suffered a concussion and was forced to forfeit his remaining two matches and take sixth place.

Not only did not being on the mat those matches hurt Muller’s place, it also hurt his message.

Unlike many young athletes who use their time in the spotlight to grandstand, Muller wrestles with headgear that is trimmed in pink with center an array of colorful puzzle pieces with the phrase “Autism Speaks.”

“I am really close to a couple of people that have Autism and a couple of people that have breast cancer and I wear it just as support,” he said. “Whatever I can do to help. It almost feels as if I am not just wrestling for myself, but I am wrestling for millions of people out there and that is what I like about it.”

Downers Grove North also had

a pair of wrestlers compete, but neither medaled. At 132, Nate Cummings lost in the opener to Alex Mitchell of Libertyville 9-6, while at 152 Austin Maher lost by technical fall in 4:38 (25-8) to Tulga Zuunbayan of Rolling Meadows.

In Class 1A, Lisle also had a pair of competitors as Drew Sonnefeldt was pinned in the opener at 132

He remained alive and was then pinned in 3:27 by Oliver Davis of Benton.

Freshman Abby Carlson advanced to the uneven bars final after a 9.25 in the prelims, but did not compete in the finals, leaving her in 10th place.

In the all-around Friday, Carlson finished in 16th place with a 36.55.

Junior Kayla Carlson was close behind in 21st place with a 35.875. In the vault prelims, Kayla finished in 12th place with a 9.425, while Abby was 22nd with a 9.275.

South’s Emily Tom was 14th in the bars (9.175), while Kayla was 27th (8.625).

Downers North’s Alyssa Alberti had a score of 8.15 in the beam.

Abby just missed finals in the floor, taking 11th with a 9.425, while Tom was 17th (9.3) and Kayla 22nd (9.225).

swimminG In the Metea Valley Sectional, Benet’s JP McAveeney qualified for state in the 100-yard freestyle (47.7) and 100 breaststroke (1:00.15).

At the Lyons Sectional, Downers South had state qualifiers in Sam Dumford in the 50 free (21.24) and 100 free (46.85) and Theo Robinson in diving (348.4).

Downers North has a pair of divers advancing to state in Kevin Sullivan (488.8) and Ryan Murphy (448.35).

“We knew they were good rebounders,” Long said. “They have a little more height than us, so we emphasized boxing out.

During the course of the game, you are going to have a couple of miss box outs. I can’t fault our players’ efforts. They all worked really hard and wanted to win. They just fell a little short.”

Despite being much better on the boards in the second half, DGS could only muster 12 second half points on offense.

“We had a lot of good shots, especially in the first half and they were going in-and-out,” Long said. “If we had some more of those going into halftime, it would have really pushed the momentum for us. In the second half they put a little more pressure on us, which kept us from doing what we wanted to. But we haven’t shot good all year. I was hoping for regionals we could turn it on.

I have good shooters on my team, shots just aren’t falling.”

The shooting seemed to be a problem for much of the season, but it wasn’t due to lack of shooters or lack of hard work.

“Our shooters have worked hard,” Long said. “They have stayed an hour after practice and got shot up. Getting shots up in a

game situation is a little different than practice. I don’t think they are as confident as the want to be. But we will get shots up in the offseason and it will help us for next year.”

Overall, the Mustangs finished around the .500 mark. Even though they have many projected returners next year, they will be losing three seniors in Kelly McLean, Stephanie Wronkiewicz and Cassie Fischer.

“We hit some bumps in the road,” Long said. “It is a long season for everybody, that is why basketball players are hard to find. But you can’t fault the effort of our team.

Every team we played commented about how hard we played until the buzzer sounded. We’re going to miss our seniors. We started one senior (McLean) who gave us a great four years and we had a couple seniors come off the bench and contributed tremendously to our team. Hopefully we can build on this for next season.”

•Benet won the Aurora East Regional title with a 78-56 win over Plainfield East. Elise Stout tallied 32 points, while Katie Jeseckas added seven rebounds. Kathleen Doyle added 30 points, giving putting her of the 1,500 point mark for her career. Doyle tallied 21 points in a 71-40 semifinal win over Joliet Central, while Jeseckas added nine rebounds.

•Downers North topped Argo 68-59 in a regional semifinal game as Jaida Green finished with 30 points and 11 rebounds. In the regional final, the Trojans dropped a heartbreaker to Kenwood, 52-50.

BoYs Hoops Benet is the top seed in the Aurora East Sectional and will get to play in its own regional.

The Redwings open postseason play March 1 at 7 p.m. against the winner of No. 16 Addison Trail and No. 17 Willowbrook. A win puts them in the regional final at 7 p.m.

March 4 against the winner of No. 8 Wheaton Warrenville South and No. 9 Naperville Central.

Downers South is the No. 5 seed in the sectional and will open play in the Glenbard East Regional against the winner of No. 12 Glenbard East and No. 21 East Aurora at 7 p.m. March 2.

A win puts the Mustangs in the March 4 regional final at 7 p.m. against likely conference foe No. 4 Hinsdale South.

Downers North is the No. 14 seed and will face off with No. 18 Lyons at 6 p.m. Feb. 29 in the Lyons Regional. The winner will face No. 3 Naperville North at 7 p.m. the following day, with the regional final March 4 at 7 p.m.

Sectional semifinal games are at 7 p.m. March 8 and 9 with the sectional final at 7 p.m. March 11.

Early voting for general primary election begins Monday, runs through March 12 The village of Downers Grove announced that it will be an early voting site for the March 15 general primary election.

Early voting begins Feb. 29 and runs through March 12 in the committee room at village hall, 801 Burlington Ave. Early voting hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Early voting provides citizens the opportunity to vote at their convenience prior to election day.
