Preservation, progress good for future Mayor Tully says village made progress but also preserved history in 2016

Downers Grove Mayor Martin Tully recently said that 2016 was a year the village not only made progress but also preserved history.

During his annual report, Tully said maintaining this balance is crucial.

“The community and the council weren’t satisfied with the preservation efforts that were taking place,” he said. ‘[I] heard from the community and others who were involved; some of the barriers and some of challenges that were presenting to those who had a desire to voluntarily landmark their homes. Of course, Downers Grove being founded in 1832 has a very proud and rich history and many, many historic places, people and things to celebrate.”

Village board action on Dec. 15, 2015 created a new, revised historic preservation ordinance.

Tully explained that one of the village’s objectives of this revision was not just to change the ordinance to make it easier and more convenient for people to landmark

historic homes, but also to increase public awareness and celebrate the various historic people, places and things in our community.

Tully gave credit to all the civic leaders and members of the public for coming together to bring change.

“The results were extraordinary, and the impact was almost immediately felt,” he said. “In the span of just one year, we had 9 buildings historically preserved and landmarked in our community. The Ehr House, the Melchor-Gjerde House, the Herring House, Alexander and Nancy Foster House, our own Main Street Train Station, the Foote House . . . the Krueger House, the Cole House and the Venard House, all those historic places and buildings were landmarked in one year as compared to just two in a number of years.”

Tully said another area of honorable mention is the progression of the village’s economic development efforts.

“We work very hard to make sure that we’re always in the best position to capitalize upon these opportunities when they present themselves and sometimes even work really hard to create opportu-

“Our motto is to preserve the balance between tradition and progress,” Tully said. “We had a great year in 2016 for preserving tradition. We also had a pretty good year in making progress, and progress includes reinvesting in our community because entropy is not a good concept. If you don’t keep putting effort into keeping things or improving them, they will fall into disarray and that is not something that we want to allow in Downers Grove.”

To this, the village officials intend to continually reinvest in the community.

“In order to maintain a vibrant community and a vibrant downtown, one must not only preserve what is unique about it, but also reinvest in the new in order to stay relevant and to stay ahead of the curve,” Tully said.

Last year saw the beginning of a number of downtown development projects, including Marquee on Maple, Burlington Station and Main & Maple.

“All of these projects will benefit the downtown TIF [District], help to pay back some of the debt that was taken out to undertake that massive infrastructure project from the late 1990’s and early 2000’s and also bring more people into the downtown to help support

the restaurants, shops and other activity in our downtown to help keep it vibrant not only today but for many, many years in the future,” Tully said.

Tully said as officials examined long-range plans for the village, it shouldn’t go unnoted the length at which they sought to adhere to five main strategic goals, which guide their actions for the from 2015 to 2017 and beyond.

This includes efforts to be good stewards of financial, environmental and neighborhood sustainability, provide exceptional municipal services, provide and maintain top quality infrastructure, provide a strong and diverse local economy and continually innovate.

Tully gave credit to village leadership for what they do for Downers Grove.

“Our best role is to identify top quality people, give them good direction, give them reasonable means by which to implement that direction and mostly, to stay out of their way and let them do their jobs—of course, holding them accountable at the end,” he said. “I think our staff here does a pretty darn good job of that both historically and currently, and we have every expectation that we’ll continue to do that in the future.”

Benedictine Univ. selects new provost Benedictine University selects James Payne as new Provost Benedictine University chose James E. Payne, Ph.D., as its next chief academic officer.

Payne, dean of the J. Whitney Bunting College of Business at Georgia College in Milledgeville, GA, will succeed outgoing Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Maria J. de la Cámara, Ph.D., who last year announced her retirement.

With more than 28 years of experience in higher education at a variety of institutions, Payne

brings a wealth of experience in academic program development and assessment, strategic planning and budgeting, and accreditation.

In his most recent role as dean at Georgia College, Payne helped lead reaccreditation efforts for the college of business by The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and initial accreditation of the college’s computer science program

by ABET, a nonprofit that ac-

credits applied science, computing, engineering and engineering technology programs. He also helped expand the college’s fundraising efforts.

In addition to his extensive administrative experience, Payne has continued to be an active scholar, serving on several editorial boards and as a journal editor. He was a 2000 Fulbright research scholar and 2007 Fulbright senior specialist to the Institute of Economics in Zagreb, Croatia. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Berea College and a Master of Science and Ph.D. in Economics from

Florida State University.

Payne will assume the new role at Benedictine in May and University leaders believe his experience and vision will make for a seamless transition.

Students take 1st at Engineering Olympics ‘There is nothing quite like a handson challenge to get students excited about science’ A team of five students from Downers Grove South High School took first place February 10 at the 2017 College of DuPage Engineering Olympics.

The winning team members are Ian Bales, Stefan Neumann, Jackson Kamedulski, Ian Smith, and Maximilian Schmidt-Bailey. Altogether, 50 teams from surrounding high schools participated in the annual event, which seeks to engage students who are interested in the field of engineering.

The Engineering Olympics asks teams to participate in short design competitions, such as creating prototypes out of common materials like CDs, rubber bands, file folders, duct tape, and anything else that a person might have in their desk.

The Engineering Olympics is hosted by the College of DuPage Engineering and Technology Club.

All designing and building occur within the competition timeframe.

“There is nothing quite like a hands-on challenge to get students excited about science,” says Downers Grove South Science Teacher Stephen Zownorega, who led the field trip. “This event brings to life the creative side of engineering, and how solving real-world prob-

lems can be fun and requires a true team effort.”

The winning team scored 360 points which is a score that is based upon students trying to maximize certain elements of their design.

They also received a plaque to display at South.

Another team of students that competed included Jesse Knight, Jon Urgello, Noah Tunney, Steven Komendanchik and Matthew Campbell.

The goal of the event is to encourage high schools students with an interest in engineering to consider pursuing education and careers in the field.

Don’t rely on pharmacies to catch drug interactions Pharmacists’ reputations as patient guardians may be unwarranted When you fill a prescription at your local pharmacy, you assume the medicine you receive is safe and won’t interact badly with other drugs you’re taking.

That’s not an unreasonable assumption, considering that pharmacists enjoy a positive reputation among the public. A recent Gallup poll found that pharmacists are among the most trusted professionals ranking second only to nurses.

But pharmacists’ reputations as patient guardians may be unwarranted.

The results of an investigation published by the Chicago Tribune before Christmas showed that patients may be in danger after all.

The paper sent reporters to more than 200 pharmacies in the Chicago area, ranging from small neighborhood drug stores to those operated by large national chains.

Fifty-two percent of the pharmacies they visited failed to warn patients that a pair of drugs, if taken together, could result in serious potential harm, even death.

The Tribune called its findings “striking evidence of an industry-wide failure that places millions of consumers at risk.”

No doubt the poor practices uncovered in Chicago are common in other places. Twenty years earlier, in 1996, U.S. News & World Report published a lengthy study that found as the Tribune did that pharmacists failed to warn their patients of dangerous interactions.

Back then, the magazine sent reporters to pharmacies in seven cities and found that “well over half failed to warn consumers when presented with prescriptions for drugs, that, when taken separately are safe but when taken together can be risky at best and at worst deadly.”

What was striking to me was that in 20 years not much has changed in the pharmacy business, and unaware patients are still at risk.

In 1996 a spokesperson for the American Pharmaceutical Association

You can, of course, ask your doctor. But even they may not know - as I found out ...” told U.S. News reporters about ongoing financial turmoil in the retail drug business.

Chains had begun to crowd out independents, HMOs were cutting their reimbursements, and pharmacists were under greater stress.

A spokesman for the American Pharmaceutical Association said the profession was “looking at a re-engineering of the whole profession.”

Fast forward to now. Was there really a re-engineering given what the Tribune found in its investigation last year?

Since findings from the two studies are similar, I’m skeptical.

A vice president of CVS pharmacy told the Tribune, “There is a very high sense of urgency to pursue this issue and get to the root cause.” My question: Why wasn’t there such urgency 20 years ago?

There still appears to be little protection for patients who have no idea whether a particular combination of drugs they take will kill them.

While many pharmacies do have computer programs that alert them when a patient is being prescribed drugs that may interact badly, John Norton, director of public relations for the National Community Pharmacists Association, told me pharmacists

sometimes fail to heed the warnings.

They may be suffering from what he called “alert fatigue.” In other words pharmacists get so many alerts that they fail to comprehend them all, and something slips through. As the Tribune found, those slips are far too common.

Where does this leave patients?

You should still ask the pharmacist to check your records to make sure a new drug doesn’t interact badly with others you take. You can, of course, ask your doctor. But even they may not know as I found out.

My doctor continued to prescribe Cipro for traveler’s diarrhea for years even though it reduces the effectiveness of another medication I’ve been taking for decades.

I learned about this only recently at an urgent care clinic where a doctor refused to prescribe Cipro because of the possible interaction.

Nor can you always rely on those leaflets put in the bags the pharmacist gives you.

The information you get may be supplied by outside vendors, says Larry Sasich, who is the co-founder of Patient Drug News and co-authored the 2005 best selling book, “Worst Pills, Best Pills” with Dr. Sidney Wolfe who headed Public Citizen’s Health Research Group for many years.

Sasich says the best information about when a drug should not be used can be found on a drug’s FDAapproved professional product label on the DailyMed website (https:// dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/) sponsored by the National Library of Medicine.

At the end of each label is the “Medication Guide” the FDA requires for some 200 drugs – many heavily advertised.

The agency requires those labels if it believes information is necessary to prevent serious adverse side effects and when patients need to know about any known and serious side effects.

You can also ask the pharmacist for the professional product label. I asked mine for Cipro’s label. He handed me a tiny, tightly wrapped packet, and said, “You’re not supposed to see this unless you ask.”

My advice: Ask! What problems have you or a family member had with drug interactions?

CHAMPAIGN - It is hard enough for a wrestler to win a state championship.

Add in trying to become an undefeated state champion and the task gets even harder.

Now throw into the mix the fact that the school you represent has never had a champion on the mat and the task is a monumental one.

So, it takes a monumental wrestler.

Senior Zach Muller of Westmont became the school’s first wrestling champion Feb. 18 when he pinned Taylor Fleetwood of Fulton in 1 minute, 9 seconds to claim the Class 1A title at 285 pounds.

The win also capped off a per-

fect 37-0 season for Muller.

“It was nerve wracking and I just wanted to get in and get it over,” Muller said of the title match. “I felt it early on [that I could take control of the match] and I felt good, so I just got after it. [Trying to be an undefeated champion] is stressful. It was a long week of stress and getting through the state tournament has been tough.”

If it was tough for Muller, he didn’t show it on the mat.

He opened the tournament by pinning Tyler Elsbury of Byron in 46 seconds and then pinned Ricky Cantu of Knoxville in 3:22.

His only match that lasted into the third period was a 5-1 win over Ian Kuehl of Lena-Winslow in the SEE CHAMP PAGE 8

Benet wins regional title

Take nothing for granted.

The message resonated before, during and after the Benet Academy girls basketball team secured a Class 4A regional championship via a 71-52 win over Lemont Feb. 16 in Lisle.

The top-seeded and two-time defending Class 4A state champion Redwings (25-4) captured their 18th regional title in 20 years and advanced to this week’s West Aurora sectional semifinal. No. 4 Yorkville, No. 6 Bolingbrook and No. 7 Plainfield East made up the rest of the field. The sectional final is at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23.

“They are never easy,” Benet coach Joe Kilbride said. “You can’t take anything for granted.

The end of every game from here on out, one team is going to be crying. We want to make sure that it’s not us.”

“We’re not taking anything for granted,” junior guard Tsimba Malonga said. “We’re playing hard every possession and doing whatever it takes to win every game.”

Malonga led the quartet of double-digit scorers with 22 points. Senior forward Kendal Schramek tallied 16, senior center Katherine Jaseckas added 14

“It was a good year wrestling wise,” Muller said. “I have had my ups and downs, but getting out here and getting better at wrestling is always a good time.”

The title only the fourth wrestling medal in Westmont history and first since 1986 when Clint Dvorak (2nd, 185) and Mike Plowman (4th, 132) both medaled.

Muller becomes only the fifth male state champion in Sentinel history and first since Henry Arndt won a track title in 2011.

“You can’t take this for granted,” Kilbride said of the Redwings’ 21st regional title in program history. “You have to come to play. There is hardware at stake and everybody wants to advance. You are going to get everybody’s best shot.”

Benet didn’t take No. 9 Lemont (18-9) for granted. The Redwings raced to a 16-0 lead after forcing eight turnovers in eight Indian possessions. Lemont had more time outs (two) than shots (none) during the opening blitz.

Benet led by double digits the rest of the way.

“It’s playoff time and somebody is going to be crying at the end of the game,” Schramek

said. “We came in here with the mentality we weren’t going to lose on our home court. We came out with intensity and fire from the get-go.”

“We came out with a lot of energy,” Malonga said. “Our focus was our press and our trapping was really good in the first quarter.”

“We had a really good start, which is what we’ve been struggling with,” Kilbride said. “Credit Lemont. I knew they were going to keep coming and they did.”

Sarah Knoepfle led the Indians with 17 points.

“This feels good but we’re not satisfied,” Malonga said. “We know we have a lot more work to do and we know we need to improve.”

Benet opened the state tournament with a 72-17 win over Neuqua Valley Feb. 14 in Lisle. It was the largest margin of victory this season for Benet.

“You are going to have to beat good teams every night from here on out,” Kilbride said. “This is a tough seven-game tournament. To win seven in a row, you have to have an awful lot of things go right.”

Lemont advanced via a 48-39 win over No. 8 Plainfield North.

Mark Pivek (160) and Kevin Paz (285) also competed for Lisle, but did not place.

In Class 3A, Downers Grove

North and South each only had one qualifier for the state meet, but both medaled.

Nate Cummings (39-6) of North placed sixth at 106, falling to Matt Ramos of Lockport by a 14-3 major decision in the fifth-place match.

At 195, South junior Sergio Villalobos (39-6) placed third with a 4-1 decision over Jake Lowell of New Trier in his medal match.

“This feels really good,” he said.

“Ending my season with a W is big instead of thinking about that match all next year. All the hard work that I did in the summer and spring all paid off.”

PAIGE DEAR PAIGE, First of all, you and your husband have to get on the same page financially.

Sit down together, and do a household budget and a profit and loss statement on the business.

A profit and loss statement will tell you the money that comes in minus the money that goes out.

Here’s the thing. If you’re putting other money into a business account, that’s a clue that you’re not making money on the business.
