Ice sculptures attract visitors to downtown Downtown businesses benefit from heavy foot traffic from visitors

Neither freezing temperatures nor afternoon snow could keep folks from heading out for a little ice and magic over Valentine’s Day weekend in Downers Grove.

The annual Ice Sculpture Festival, held Feb. 12-14, drew hundreds to the streets of downtown, to catch a glimpse of art carved into solid blocks of ice and watch the artists who make that magic happen.

Forty pre-carved figures ranging from snowflakes and leprechauns to Star Wars characters and the Eiffel Tower sat in front of local businesses on Main and Curtiss streets. Visitors were welcome to touch the sculptures and take photos with them.

Many businesses, benefitting from the heavy foot traffic all weekend, welcomed visitors to come in and warm up and offered giveaways and free samples.

weekend said it was worth it to see the frozen creations.

“We thought it would be a fun family activity,” said Tia Nash of Downers Grove, who visited the festival with her three girls, Sophia, 7, Zoe, 6, and Alex, 4.

Demonstrations were held throughout the weekend, as artists showed off their skills with drills and chainsaws, turning chunks of ice into shapes including owls, snowflakes, flowers and fictional characters.

Despite the fact that the art is made of ice, the cold presented a real challenge to the artists.

“Many of these sculptures were carved indoorsat 72 degrees,” Patrick Stewart, an artist with Nadeau’s Ice Sculptures of Forest Park, told the crowd gathered to watch him work on Saturday afternoon. Stewart said warmer weather makes the ice easier to manipulate, but cutting into the ice with air temperatures below freezing is a whole different type of challenge.

“When it’s this cold, it’s like carving a sidewalk,” Stewart added.

The festival is sponsored by the Downers Grove Downtown Management Corporation, a local organization that works on creating a diverse retail, shopping and service business environment to help increase community involvement in downtown Downers Grove.

District 58 families invited to 2nd Crosstown Classic basketball game Herrick girls’ basketball team wil take on O’Neill girls’ team on Feb. 27 Downers Grove Grade School District 58 invites families to the second game of the new Crosstown Classic basketball series. The series offers families an opportunity to cheer on their favorite middle school basketball team while giving back to the community.

The series continues with the Herrick girls’ basketball team taking on the O’Neill girls’ team at Downers Grove North Feb. 27. Seventh grade will play at 6:30 p.m., and eighth

grade will play at 7:45 p.m.

The Crosstown Classic will feature a halftime contest, DGN and Herrick band performances, raffle prizes, giveaways and concessions.

Raffle prizes include two Chicago Blackhawks jerseys signed by Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews, four Chicago Bulls tickets, and dinner and an overnight stay at the Intercontinental Hotel - Chicago.

Raffle tickets are $5.

Proceeds from the Feb. 27 game

will benefit the Herrick PTA and Bloom’s Angels, an organization that supports Herrick families in need.

Admission is $5 or $15 a family.

“This truly is a great event for our community, so feel free to bring your family, friends and neighbors,” said Gail Pistello, Herrick teacher and Bloom’s Angels co-founder and coordinator. “Come and enjoy the games, the school bands, the concessions and the prizes all while helping a great cause.”

In less than 10 years, heroin addiction has become one of the greatest public health threats in the Chicago metropolitan area.

Fifty-three people died of heroin overdose last year in WIll County alone – a staggering number but not an anomaly. The figure represents the latest statistic in what is now a regional and national epidemic that rips apart families and communities.

Last week, officials from Will and DuPage counties came together during a panel discussion to address the persistent and growing problem of heroin and opioid addiction that is plaguing communities throughout northern Illinois. The forum was the second such event sponsored by U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Illinois, in as many years. It featured behavioral health and law enforcement officials throughout the 11th Congressional District.

“This is a national problem, and we need a national solution that

would bring together federal, state and local governments,” Foster told the dozens of community members and treatment specialists who attended the Feb. 8 event at the Will County Health Department, 501 Ella Ave., in Joliet.

Sincebeingelectedin2012,Foster has become a leading figure in the effort to combat heroin addiction.

Earlier this year, he introduced two pieces of legislation that would increase federal support of both prevention and treatment efforts at the local level – the Opioid Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act and the Expanding Opportunities for Recovery Act. The first piece of legislation would create a program to study behavior in an effort to encourage doctors to properly prescribe opioid medication, as well as provide funding to train medical personnel in intervention and patient screening methods in order to identify and help potential drugabuse patients. The act would also encourage states to implement drug take-back programs.

For individuals who are already struggling with addiction, the

That annual figure increased throughout the decade, eventually reaching 53 heroin deaths in 2012. From then until the end of 2015, heroin overdose claimed an additional 126 lives in the county.

The numbers tell a similar story in DuPage County, where 46 people died from heroin overdose in 2013, 36 in 2014 and 43 in 2015. The 11th Congressional District covers large parts of both counties.

“When I was first elected to Congress, I was not prepared for the number and types of stories I heard from family members who lost loved ones to substance abuse,” Foster said.

That lack of preparation was a sentiment shared by others on the Feb. 8 panel, as well.

“I think a lot of people were caught off guard that heroin was such a dramatic invader into our children’s and loved one’s lives,” said Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr. Officials started to appreciate the severity of the problem a little more than five years ago, according to Walsh, and immediately took action. He said his office worked with the health department and state’s attorney’s office to create Will County HELPS (Heroin Education Leads to Prevention Solutions).

Partnering with the Heroin Epidemic Relief Organization, Will County HELPS held the first HERO HELPS forum in 2010. The event has since grown into an annual community summit, where substance abuse counselors, health professionals and local elected officials come together to share information and discuss solutions to the region’s

Foster said people who can’t afford treatment could receive up to 60 consecutive days of treatment through the EORA’s grant program.

But despite this and other prevention efforts, heroin addiction continues to be a significant public health issue in Will County and surrounding areas.

Southwest Coalition for Substance Abuse Issues President Brian Hazard said that’s because a culture of denial persists in the community.

“The biggest challenge we have as providers of treatment is an absolute lack of understanding by the community about what’s happening right underneath their noses,” he said. “Most parents don’t know their children have a heroin problem until something has already gone horribly wrong.”

Combine that with the increasing use and misuse of prescription opioid medications, and it’s clear to Hazard why overdose deaths spiked again in 2015.

The Will County State’s Attorney’s Office has also increased its efforts, making prosecution of heroin dealers a top priority since 2010.

“The wonderful thing about this county is no dealer can last very long [here] because we have a network of informants, officers have eyes and ears everywhere, and sooner or later you’re going to be selling to a police officer wearing a wire...” Glasgow said.

Regional task forces, such as the Will County Cooperative Police Assistance Team and the DuPage Metropolitan Enforcement Group, have also helped law enforcement efforts to put drug dealers within their jurisdictions behind bars.

Additionally, Glasgow said his office has started to aggressively prosecute drug-induced homicide cases.

“If you deliver to someone and they die, we’re going to be coming for you,” he added.

Still, the number of heroin overdose deaths in 2015 matched 2012’s record high. Glasgow credited the spike to the drug’s availability and the Chicago

market.

“Even if we locked up all the dealers in Will County, our problem isn’t going to be that much lessened because every kid can get up to Chicago or they have a friend who can get up to Chicago,” he said.

Prosecuting these types of suppliers for drug-induced homicide will hopefully serve as a deterrent, Glasgow added.

Mark Piccoli, of the DuPage Metropolitan Enforcement Group, agreed with the methods outlined by the state’s attorney, but he added that the regional heroin problem required a multi-faceted approach that combines law enforcement with prevention and education initiatives.

“We’re not going to arrest our way out of this, and I firmly believe that,” said Piccoli. “It’s going to take all these initiatives and all these groups to take on this problem.”

However, others feel that scare tactics such as prosecution individuals for drug-induced homicide are the wrong approach.

Prevention, treatment Chelsea Laliberte knows first hand the devastating affects of heroin addiction.

In 2008, her brother Alex died of a heroin overdose and authorities attempted to prosecute the person who provided him with the drugs.

“He was his best friend, and they were using together,” said Laliberte, who addressed the panel during the Feb. 9 event. “I appreciate all the work that law enforcement does, but I do want to mention that the people who are handing drugs off are also sick.”

Followingherbrother’sdeath,Laliberte founded Live4Lali, which works to raise awareness of substance use issues. She said education and treatment are the best options available to communities.

“Prevention on the front end, treatment on the front end; that’s really where we need to be focusing the issue right now and we’re not,” Laliberte told the Bugle.

Although she feels that programs such as drug court give many people a second chance at recovery, she said they don’t

go far enough and often times present a number of legal burdens that interfere with recovery.

Medication-assisted treatment is one method that has been shown to work, according to Laliberte. However, she said many drug courts have been hesitant to incorporate medications such as methadone, suboxone and vivitrol, which Laliberte said increase a person’s chance of successfully recovering from heroin addiction.

“Data shows that there are some legal strategies that help, but most of the time if we’re not treating people with treatments we know work, like medication-assisted treatment, these legal issues are just becoming redundant and they’re not helping,” she added.

In addition to the legislation introduced

by Foster, the Heroin Crisis Act – passed by the Illinois legislature in September – would make medication-assisted treatment more available by requiring insurers to cover it and other treatments.

The Downers Grove Dazzles Open Juvenile Gold synchronized skating team has been dominating the competition at recent tournaments.

The girls skate out of the Downers Grove Ice Arena under the direction of Barb Foltz. The team is coached

by Dana Murphy and Nicole Thomas.

The team begins practicing in May, and their competition season starts in November and ends in January.

The team’s first competition was the Kalamazoo Kick-off Classic in November, and the girls took home first place.

They continued their winning streak at the Porter Classic in Ann

Arbor, Michigan and at the Foot Of The Lakes Synchronized Skating Competition in Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin.

The girls got their fourth win at Synchro Illinois in Oak Lawn, and the team wrapped up their season with the USFSA Midwest and Pacific Championships in Portland, Oregon, where they took home second place.

Chris Brindza, whose daughter, Alina, is on the team said that the

organization is wonderful.

“Our coaching staff is great,” Brindza said. “They do produce very good teams.”

The girls on the team range from age 13 to 18, and the organization currently has eight teams.

“We are so proud proud of them and appreciate the recognition for all their hard work and dedication,” Brindza said, adding that despite the age differences, the girls have a strong bond with each other.

Through the course of their investigation detectives were led to Woitovich. A search warrant was executed Feb. 11 at Woitovich’s residence, and officers allegedly uncovered images of child pornography in Woitovich’s possession.

Following the search, Woitovich was taken into custody without incident by the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office.

“Child pornography is not a victimless crime,” Berlin said. “Year after year, hundreds of thousands of images are downloaded and shared over the internet with each image representing yet another innocent, young victim of child pornography.

To protect these innocent victims, my office stands ready to vigorously prosecute any allegations of child pornography.”

Woitovich’s next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 22, in front of Judge George Bakalis. Additional

conditions for Woitovich should he be able to post bond include no contact with children under 18 years of age and no computer or Internet access.

We all know that kids these days are using drugs more than ever before, right? Our eyes tell us that the images we see on TV, in movies and the daily news must be a reflection of reality.

And, sure enough, recent data indicates that 49 percent of all high school seniors have used an illicit drug at least once in their lifetime. Yet this number has actually been quite consistent for the past 20 years, and it is lower than the usage rates seen in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Almost across the board, drug use has dropped among adolescents, and quite significantly from previous decades.

People try to put us down When would you guess was the peak of drug use was among teenagers? The answer is the period from 1979-1981.

During this era, high school seniors reported that in the past year 12 percent used cocaine, 51 percent used marijuana and 55 percent used at least one illicit drug. Today, 35 years later, those figures are 2 percent for cocaine, 35 percent for marijuana and 39 percent for any illicit drug.

Furthermore, according to the most recent data available, 7.4 percent of adolescents between the ages of 12-17 were current (past 30 days) marijuana users, while 19.6 percent of young adults ages 18-25 were current marijuana users. By comparison, over 16 percent of people ages 12-17 and 35 percent of 18-25 year-olds were current marijuana users in 1979.

What about alcohol? Well, binge drinking – defined as having five or more drinks on one occasion – hit an all-time low among teens last year at under 20 percent. That compares favorably to

Finally, perhaps the greatest change in drug use patterns over the past 50 years relates to cigarettes. Many of us remember a time when smoking was allowed on airplanes, in restaurants, and for many years in college classrooms.

Now, it’s nearly impossible to find a space where smoking is not prohibited or restricted. The cultural attitude shift away from smoking has trickled down to young people. Last year, just 11 percent of 12th graders had smoked a cigarette in the past month, and half of those (5.5 percent of all seniors) were daily smokers. In 1976, the year when peak smoking was reported, nearly 40 percent had smoked in the past month, and 30 percent were daily smokers.

Not trying to cause a big sensation Where do we get this information?

Actually, there are two highly reliable, long-term sources. The first is an annual survey conducted by the University of Michigan called Monitoring the Future.

The second is done by a federal agency called the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration, and it is called the National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

Each year, these groups ask thousands of young people about their drug use habits. Have you ever used this drug?

Have you used it in the past 30 days? Do you use it everyday? You get the idea.

We can then analyze their findings and try to make informed guesses about drug use trends. One of the most notoriously difficult things to do in research is to

show a cause and effect relationship. If we see a change in trends, how can we account for it? Did something happen to make a certain drug more or less appealing? How can we explain the drop in drug use rates in virtually every category, particularly when we hear so many stories about drug problems and may even witness them firsthand?

For one thing, the data above looks at kids throughout the country, in all 50 states, and it does not describe the unique concerns faced by local communities, including here in the Chicago area. So while broad patterns suggest a promising decrease in teenage usage, we cannot say that drug use is no longer a problem. It clearly is a problem, as the CDC recently exposed the depth of the opioid overdose issue, which now accounts for as many deaths as car accidents among young adults.

Don’t try to dig what we all say What’s important is that we continue to have conversations about drug use, with parents setting clear expectations.

Although we know teenagers will not always follow those guidelines, research strongly supports parental norms that disapprove of using. If we go too far in trying to use scare tactics, however, that approach only backfires because it is not genuine. One thing is for certain – today’s teenagers are faced with as many stresses and difficult decisions as any previous generation, and they are a diverse group with enormous promise.

In the next article, I will explore the question of who should pay for social services, an issue that critically impacts the state of Illinois. As we move toward the end of the state’s fiscal year without a budget, the question is as relevant as ever.

SECTIONAL Champs Downers South wins Hinsdale Central Sectional title

The Downers Grove South Mustangs made a big improvement this year and it paid off.

After qualifying for the Hinsdale Central Sectional last year and finishing in the back pack, this year they finished in front of everyone, taking the title last Wednesday with a score of 143.875. Lincoln-Way East finished in second place with a 140.425.

“It feels amazing,” South senior Emily Tom said. “We were kind of expecting this, but not really. It is great to have all of the hard work and struggles to pay off. We want to go out and do our best and enjoy the atmosphere at state.”

With the team advancement to state, there were also multiple individual advancers to state.

Freshman Abby Carlson overcame a fall in the beam to win

the floor exercise with a score of 9.475. She also finished third in the vault (9.4) and second in the uneven bars (9.425) to qualify for state in both of those events (top 5) and also qualified in the allaround with a 36.6.

“It is so exciting,” Carlson said.

“I didn’t have the greatest season, but we came here today as a team to show everyone how hard we’ve been working. I had my doubts, but with my team here, it could take some of the focus off me and on the team being here and I think that helped me.

“The injury was more of a scare and I kind of had to use my adrenaline on the floor to get through it and finish off a good all-around day. Competing at state is going to be so much fun.”

Close behind her was her sister Kayla, a junior, who was fifth in the all-around (46.475) and also qualified for state in the vault by

Downers South sends five into Hall of Fame Saturday, South High School in Downers Grove inducted five new members to its Athletic Hall of Fame: Chuck Novotny (Coach/ Administrator), Cheryl ZemaitisFerguson (’85), Kurt Griesheim (’85), Dr. Adam Shafer (’94) and Kathy Smith (Griesheim) (’83).

Novotny’s accomplishments include: Worked at South High from 1965-1986, serving as the school’s first athletic director as well as a physical education teacher and department chair, served as head boys soccer coach from 1976-1986, bringing home the very first state trophy for DGS in 1983—4th in the state, served as head and assistant coach in wrestling and soccer, leading wrestlers to two IHSA District titles in 1970 and 1973 and served as head and assistant soccer coach, winning the Des Plaines Valley Conference title in 1979 and 1980; made regular appearances in the IHSA state series

in the early 1980’s. In 1981, team advanced to the IHSA Elite 8, earned a fourth place trophy in 1983 and had another Elite 8 appearance in 1985.

Z e m a i t i s - F e r g u s o n’s accomplishments include: Volleyball player for DGS, serving as both captain and team MVP for the Mustangs and for three years was named to the Maine West alltournament team, All-Conference, All-Area by the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun Times and was named one of the Best Young Players by the Chicago Tribune. She was also named to All-State Team by the Chicago Sun Times and Chicago Tribune.

She played club ball for Sports Performance Rehabilitation Institute (SPRI), a Junior Olympic Team that won a National Championship where she was named MVP of the tournament.

She was the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year in her freshman and sophomore year at University of Iowa and All-Conference at Lewis University.

Griesheim’s accomplishments include: Three-sport athlete at DGS in wrestling, soccer and gymnastics and also played club volleyball, an IHSA Regional champion his sophomore, junior and senior years, a three-time champion at DGS invitational, a two-time champion of the Rex Whitlach Invitational, won Conant Cougar Classic and named Chicago Tribune Athlete of the Week.

In his senior year he amassed 45 wins and went on to win regional and sectional tournaments. Placed third at the IHSA state tournament, earning him All-State honors.

He played in the Volleyball Junior Olympics from 1984-86 and participated in the Prairie State

games.

Dr. Shafer’s accomplishments include:Four-yearstartingbasketball player, was named Adidas AllAmerican as well as to multiple AllArea teams chosen by the Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune, and Daily Herald, including 1994 Player of the Year, All-time leading scorer at DGS, holding the highest three-point shooting percentage for a season at DGS, led the WSG conference in receptions and yards as a football wide-receiver his junior year and a four-time All-Conference and All-Tournament pick for the WestSuburban Gold (WSG) and York Holiday Tournament in basketball.

University and University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Smith’s accomplishments include: Four-year varsity letter winner in volleyball, instrumental in winning three consecutive Des Plaines Valley Conference titles (1980-83); named All-League twice, 1981 and 1982 volleyball team captain and MVP, she was named to the Suburban Tribune and Sun Times All-Area teams and also named to numerous all-tournament teams.

In 1982 she was named first team All-State by the Champaign News Gazette and the Chicago Tribune.

“It is really exciting,” Kayla said. “I’m glad I could perform as well as I did. We just wanted to have fun and make it as a team, so doing it myself was a bonus.

Our team dynamic is always exciting. It feels great.”

Tom advances to state for the second time after placing third in the bars with a 9.075.

“I was just hoping to come out and do my best,” Tom said. “It wasn’t as good as I wanted to do, but I’m happy with my results.

It feels good to go back because last year I didn’t have my best meet at sectionals. I’m happy to go with my team as well. They have all worked so hard. We have a great atmosphere at practice.”

The Mustangs will look for Kayla Carlson and Tom to provide experience at state this weekend at Palatine.

“We have a lot of freshmen on the team, so having some experience will help them,” Kayla said. “But having the team there will help me as well. It is hard when you are there by yourself and you don’t have your teammates there to support you.

So we will have everyone there helping each other out.”

Also adding excitement is the fact that two sets of sisters are on the team together in the Carlsons and Toms with Linsday

“We have done gymnastics together forever, so it has always been something we have done as sisters,” Kayla said. “It is cool to be able to be on the high school team together. We’ve been waiting for this and knew we would have a good team with the Tom sisters as well.”

Downers Grove North’s Alyssa Alberti is also headed to state after placing fourth in the balance beam with a 8.95.

“I was really nervous because I haven’t stuck a beam routine with my new skills all year,” Alberti said. “I was excited to do the routine and happy I made it.

I’m really excited. I wasn’t sure I was going to place. I had to settle myself down and focus skill by skill. I want to be confident and even stronger at state.”

WRESTLING In Class 3A, Downers North had a pair of state qualifiers out of the Batavia Sectional in Nate Cummings (106-pounds) and Austin Maher (152) Both finished in fourth place to grab the final qualifying spots at their weight class.

Downers South also had a pair of state qualifiers as Tyree Johnson (145) and Zach Muller (285) both placed second.

In Class 1A, Lisle had a pair of third-place finishers who are state bound in Drew Sonnefeldt (132) and Mark Pivek (152).
