PGA pro opens golf facility in village Facility offers players a chance to play on famous courses

Golf instructor and PGA member Kyle Rich wanted to put the space for his existing golf academy to further use by setting up an indoor training facility.

So, when an opportunity arosem he to put his plans into action.

Legends Indoor Golf, located in a 7,300 square-foot facility at 2091 63rd St., opened in 2016.

Owned and operated by Rich, the center includes a driving range, full-size practice green and performance golf simulation.

While students affiliated with the Kyle Rich Golf Academy have benefitted from having a place to improve their skills and keep their games sharp during the winter, Rich believes he’s filling a broader niche.

“I think it’s a great market that is definitely strong in Downers Grove,” Rich said. “People get a chance to see our offerings, and I think it will continue to grow. “ Rich has noted that golfers playing at his facility travel from in and around the area, and often include people from Naperville, Hinsdale and Woodridge.

There are a number of golf courses in the area, including Village Greens (Woodridge), Village Links (Glen Ellyn) and the Downers Grove Golf Club (Downers Grove).

Rich said his facility aims to please.

“We offer both senior and regular leagues,” he said. “We offer a senior rate Monday through Friday before 3 p.m. That is a big offering.

We get a lot of seniors who play throughout the week.”

Typically, Legends Indoor Golf sees three different types of players: golfers looking to play 9 holes or 18 holes and others who like to play at their leisure, at an hourly rate.

The facility offers players a chance to play on famous courses, a high-tech driving range, lessons and a year-round golf academy.

“We also have a full-size contoured practice green,” he said.

“We are like a golf course in that sense.”

The Kyle Rich Golf Academy and Legends Indoor Golf are under one roof and powered by Foresight Sports.

“We provide the ability for players to get the same accurate results indoors and outdoors,” Rich said. “We are powered by Foresight Sports. They have a unit called GC2, a launch monitor which provides incredible accuracy for players inside just as they would outdoors.”

But there’s more to what makes Legends Indoor Golf standout, Rich said.

Rich said he sees his facility serving as a social hub for golf enthusiasts of all experience levels.

“I think we can definitely provide Downers Grove with a social setting where golfers can congregate in the offseason,” he said. “We offer special events throughout the year.

Legends offers not only the putting, ranges and lessons, we (also) do corporate events and we accommodate groups the same way a golf course does.”

Rich said it’s great to know that he can run an indoor golf facility in Downers Grove.

“We’re excited that we’re able remodel the center and offer golfers a place in the offseason and winter time,” he said.

Annexation question not appearing on ballot Determination was made in response to a filing made by an anonymous petitioner not meeting required signatures The DuPage County Circuit Court has determined that a question over whether Woodridge should be annexed into the City of Naperville will not appear on the April 4, 2017 ballot. This determination was made in response to a filing made by an anonymous petitioner to have the question included on ballots for Woodridge voters. The judge cited the significant deficiency to meet even the minimum number of required signatures (the petition included only 20 percent of the number required), as well as other deficiencies, in his ruling,

Changes may be coming to Medicare What’s going to happen to Medicare?

That’s not an insignificant question given the political shift in Washington.

Now, with Republicans controlling the presidency and both houses of Congress, some ideas they’ve been pushing for years have a chance of passing.

Those ideas would drastically change the way Medicare works for those already on it and those joining in the next few years.

Medicare is wildly popular, but that popularity doesn’t necessarily translate into understanding of a very complex program, what’s happened to it, and what may happen. Writing about Medicare for nearly 30 years and watching it evolve, I’ve seen how easily Congress has already made big changes with hardly a peep from the press or the public. The same could happen again. In this column I discuss a few of those possible changes gleaned from my decades of experience covering the program.

Since the election, there’s been talk of “voucherizing” or privatizing Medicare, an idea Republicans have been pushing for 20 years. Under a fully privatized arrangement Medicare would no longer be social insurance like Social Security but more like Obamacare with everyone eventually buying their coverage from private insurance companies.

Beneficiaries would receive a sum of money, likely to be called “premium support” instead of the more diresounding “voucher,” to help buy their coverage. The amount of support and how well it would keep pace with medical inflation would be buried in the details Congress would hash out.

Today, the government provides the benefits for hospital and physician care for most Medicare beneficiaries, but that could change with more privatization. There already is a lot of privatiza-

tion in Medicare, and it came about step-by-step - usually with both political parties in agreement and lots of buzz words like “consumer choice” to sell changes to the public.

The long steady march toward Medicare Advantage (MA) plans now used by about one-third of all beneficiaries and the prescription drug benefit are privatized insurance programs within Medicare. Seniors in MA plans give up their traditional, standardized Medicare benefits for doctor and hospital services and buy them from insurers that receive subsidies from the government.

In a totally privatized arrangement, there may be no standardized benefits, and seniors would choose from a menu of insurance company options much the way drug plans are sold today.

It’s too early to say whether Congress will push for premium support this year.

Democrats have already signaled they will fight back. It’s more likely that other changes could slip through that would radically alter Medicare and force beneficiaries to pay a lot more for their care.

One of them is a change in the rules on balance billing: physicians charging seniors and disabled people on the program more than what Medicare will pay. Most doctors accept Medicare’s payment as payment in full. Those who don’t can charge patients only 15 percent more than Medicare’s payment.

This limit offers protection against the high balance billing charges patients with other kinds of insurance are facing.

The nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price is no fan of the 15 percent rule and once proposed eliminating it, which may explain why he has gotten such a strong endorsement from the American Medical Association. The AMA has called Price a leader in developing public policy to advance patient choice and “reduce excessive regulatory burdens.” Many doctors who work with Medicare patients would like to charge as much as they want.

Congress may try to shift costs another way. The objective is to reduce what the government pays for beneficiaries’ care by making them pay more themselves. One solution is to combine the deductibles for hospital and physician care into one, and impose an outof-pocket spending cap for beneficiaries still enrolled in traditional Medicare.

Two-thirds of beneficiaries are. Currently no such cap exists. (Seniors in MA plans do face such caps – last year as high as $6,700.)

If seniors in the traditional program also buy a Medigap plan, it’s possible they have what’s called “first dollar coverage.” That means medical expenses are covered from the beginning.

Congress has already begun to take that protection away. Beginning in 2020 insurers can no longer sell certain Medigap plans that provide for the first dollar coverage beneficiaries want. However, if you have such a policy, you can keep it.

Medicare does face some long-term funding shortfalls, and so far the acceptable solution is to require that seniors pay more rather than raise taxes for everyone or impose cost controls with teeth, which doctors, hospitals, drug companies, and other healthcare providers don’t want. I will explore all that, including negotiating pharmaceutical prices, in a future column.

1 dead, 2 injured in Feb. 4 fire Cause of the fire is still under investigation A Downers Grove resident was killed and two more injured in a house fire Feb. 4, according to a news release from the Downers Grove Police Department.

The Downers Grove Fire Department responded to a residential fire in the 4000 block of Washington Street at 4 a.m. Feb. 4.

When the fire department ar-

rived on scene, the two-story, single-family home had thick smoke and fire coming from both sides of the structure.

Robyn Rauch, 35, and two other residents were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital with injuries sustained from the fire.

Rauch was transported to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge for further treatment. She died at 11:32 p.m. Feb. 4.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The other two patients have been treated and released from the hospital.

The Downers Grove Fire Department was assisted by the Downers Grove Police Department, and the Lisle-Woodridge, Westmont, Lombard, York Center, Tri-State and Lemont fire departments.

Typically, when a team rallies from five points down in the final 10 seconds and ties the game on a banked in three-pointer at the buzzer, that would be the story of the game.

While that is what happened for Lisle in its 46-43 regional final win over Timothy Christian, it wasn’t the main story of the contest.

Than belonged to freshman Ahniya Melton, who scored the game’s lone basket in overtime.

“I just had a lot of nerves and it was my natural instinct to go,” Melton said.

What made her feat more impressive is the fact that it was her first high school basketball game ever at any level.

“This was my first game back,” Melton said. “I’ve been out for four months with a knee injury.

what you have to do to play in the game. It feels really good, especially since I am a freshman coming off an injury.”

Melton was just cleared to play Tuesday and immediately paid dividends as she was forced into extra minutes due to foul trouble.

“I didn’t expect this or to play this much,” Melton said. “I had just been to two practices. I just got cleared Tuesday. I definitely didn’t think I would be hitting the game-winning shot.”

“I’m so happy for her, she deserved it,” Lisle guard Natalie Takahashi said.

Melton’s heroics would never have happened though if it weren’t for the crazy comeback led by Takahashi and late struggles from Timothy Christian.

After the third missed Timothy Christian free throw, Lisle inbounded the ball from the sideline with 3.6 seconds left.

Takahashi got the ball and threw up a shot that went perfectly off the glass and through the bottom of the net.

“That was very nerve-wracking, I’m not going to lie,” Takahashi said. “The play was originally for TyAnn (LeGrandMelton). It is a play we normally run for the last possession, and I think they were expecting it to

go to her. She was the first option and I was the second. I happened to be open and got the ball. Basically I just threw it up there.”

The basket gave new life to the Lions, who didn’t allow a point in the overtime, and gave senior Nicole Cyranoski another chance to play with her teammates.

After scoring 12 points in the first half, she spent much of the second half in foul trouble and fouled out with 36 seconds left and the team down six. She thought it was the last time she would step foot on the court as a Lion.

“I did, I thought it was over,” Cyranoski said. “I almost started crying. It was just a crazy game where anything could happen.

I’m glad Natalie made the shot.

I think it was fate for us to win this regional championship. We haven’t won it since 2004, so it was really special for us.”

Instead, the 13-year drought is over and the Lions moved on to the sectional round.

“It feels good,” LeGrandMelton said. “It has been a long time since we have won one of these, so it feels real good. We just wanted it. We wanted to win for our school. I think we just wanted it more.”

“Coach told us before the game to play as hard as we could,” Takahashi said. “He wanted us to leave it all on the floor. That is what we tried to do. Whatever happens, happens and it just worked out in our favor.”

Locals headed to state Downers Grove South will be well represented at the state gymnastics meet Saturday at Palatine High School.

Kayla Carlson grabbed the fifth and final automatic qualifying spot at the Oswego Sectional in the All-Around with a score of 36.275. She also qualified in vault (2nd, 9.475) and the uneven parallel bars (3rd, 9.25).

Andrea Davenport also advanced in two events, qualifying in the balance beam (5th, 9.025) and floor exercise (4th, 9.2), while Lindsay Tom advanced in the uneven bars (4th, 8.975).

At the Downers Grove North Sectional, a pair of local wrestlers advanced to next weekend’s state tournament at the University of Illinois in Champaign.

The Trojans will send Nate Cummings at 106 pounds.

Cummings (37-3) placed second after falling 3-1 to - Dylan Ragusin of Montini in the finals.

Earlier in the tournament, he pinned Reid Medlin of West Aurora in 59 seconds, defeated Michael Leveille of Marist 5-1 and beat Mt. Carmel’s Colton Drousias 6-4.

South will be represented by Sergio Villalobos (35-5) at 195, who also placed second.

In the finals, he was defeated by Sandburg’s Patrick Brucki via technical fall in 5:11.

To get to the title match, won by injury default over Andrew Leonard of Wheaton Warrenville South in 4:35 and won by a 16-2 major decision over Marmion Academy’s Tyler Surges.

BOWLING Downers Grove North advanced a pair of bowlers to the state finals.

Senior Sophie Ottley rolled a 1,207, while junior Katherine Hutto posted a 1,207 to advance.

NORTH CENTRAL COLLEGE Winning four events and once again exhibiting superior depth in the distance events, the North Central College men’s track and field team came out on top of a rugged competitive field in Saturday’s Chicagoland Indoor Championships, winning the meet for the ninth straight year at Al B. Carius Track.

The sixth-ranked Cardinals totaled 131 points to top the 19-team

field, followed by DePaul University (118) and fourth-ranked Benedictine University (108).

North Central swept the top five positions in the 3,000-meter run.

Dhruvil Patel placed first in a personal-best time of eight minutes, 26.45 seconds, outleaning Zach Plank (8:26.55) at the line. Ethan Adlfinger placed third (8:28.38), also turning in a personal best, followed by Zach Hird (8:31.01) and Nolan McKenna (8:35.74).

The Cardinals also took the first four places in the 5,000-meter run, as individual champion Carlitos Rangel (15:09.86) was followed across the line by Dan O’Keefe (15:19.12), Zach Herrera (15:22.22) and Dominic Dina (15:23.00).

Luke Winder won the pole vault with a clearance of 17 feet, 2 3/4 inches as Dylan Kuipers cleared 15’3” to place fourth. North Central also won the high jump, as Adam Poklop cleared 6’8”, and Kyle Olesen added a fourth-place showing in that event as well (6’4”).

The 4-by-400-meter relay team of Daniel Spaccapaniccia, Zach Kirby, Ben Nordman and Peyton Piron placed second in a seasonbest time of 3:20.84, and Piron and Spaccapaniccia later placed third (49.50) and fourth (49.78), respectively, in the 400-meter dash.

Michael Anderson clocked a personal-best time of 1:56.05 to finish fourth in the 800-meter run, and the distance medley relay quartet of Chase Hall, Andrew Gillingham, Nathan Holley and Steve Sismelich placed fourth as well (10:56.76).

North Central saw a freshman record broken in the 200-meter dash, as Maceo Findlay’s sixthplace time of 22.47 seconds broke the previous record of 22.56, which had been held by Athletic Hall of Famer Andre Coleman ‘94 since 1991.

• Playing in front of its home crowd for the final time this season, the North Central College men’s basketball team treated the Gregory Arena faithful to a dominant performance Saturday, posting its largest margin of victory of the campaign in a 84-60 walkover of Elmhurst College.

The Cardinals (14-9, 8-6 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) enjoyed one of their finest perimeter shooting efforts of the season, hitting 12 of 29 shots (41.4 percent) from beyond the threepoint arc, and led comfortably

throughout the second half.

The contest was tied five times in the first nine minutes before North Central established a lead it would never relinquish, as Matt Cappelletti scored twice in the lane and Alex Sorenson buried a three-pointer. Sorenson later sank back-to-back threes near the end of the half to give the hosts their first double-digit advantage at 4429.

North Central made five of its first seven shots after halftime to stay in control, and led by as many as 31 points before easing off the accelerator. Sorenson finished with a game-high 26 points on 9 of 15 shooting from the floor and 4 of 6 accuracy from three-point range, while also grabbing nine rebounds. Erwin Henry totaled 18 points and nine boards, while Jagger Anderson put up 16 points and tied a career high with nine assists. Aiden Chang gave the Cardinals a fourth double-figure scorer with 15 points.

Caleb Mowry came off the bench to lead Elmhurst (6-17, 2-12 CCIW) with 13 points. Derek Dotlich added 11 poitns and Ryan Patton scored 10.

• The North Central College women’s basketball team fell behind late in the first quarter and never recovered on Saturday night, dropping a 85-65 decision at the hands of Elmhurst College on Senior Night inside Gregory Arena.

North Central (11-11, 5-8 CCIW) held a 22-19 lead with 3:01 to play in the first quarter, as a Paula Zerante three-pointer broke a 19 all tie, but Elmhurst responded with a 11-0 run to end the quarter, including a Kalia Summerlin three right before the buzzer.

The Bluejay (18-5, 10-4 CCIW) run continued into the second quarter as Kaela Jones and Mikaela Eppard each connected from close range to increase the Elmhurst lead to double digits, 34-22.

Elmhurst would lead by double figures the remainder of the contest, including a 28-point advantage at one point during the fourth quarter.

Zerante was the lone Cardinal to finish in double figures, finishing with 14 points, while Kelly Wallner added eight and Siarra O’Neil finished with seven. Anita Sterling grabbed a team-leading six rebounds, while Caroline Heimerdinger and Shannon Ryan each dished out three assists.

Prepay & discount are good marketing ideas DEAR DAVE, I’m a small-business owner with a lawn care franchise. It’s common in our industry, after the season is over, to send out pre-pay letters for the upcoming season. If we send out these letters offering a five or 10 percent discount for early payment on next year’s services, is that too similar to borrowing money from our customers at five to 10 percent?

KEVIN DEAR KEVIN, Not at all. I definitely would send pre-pay letters. It takes some of the seasonality “ouch” out of

your financial equation, and it gives them the opportunity to take advantage of a bargain. It’s not a bad plan from a marketing standpoint for your business, either. You might even be able to

add some new customers with an offer like this.

You obviously have to be really secure and confident in your ability to provide the service. Otherwise, you could end up in a really bad situation. Your equipment, staffing and track record in the business will all come into play.

But if all this is strong, and you’ve been in the business for a number of years and plan on staying in the business for years to come, then this is something I’d definitely do.

and retirement, too. My girlfriend and I plan to get married in the next couple of years, and she has about $90,000 in debt.
