Descendant of civil rights pioneer speaks Great-granddaughter of civil rights pioneer Ida B. Wells, speaks at Benedictine University

Award-winning author, speaker and educator Michelle Duster headlined an event at Benedictine University titled “Making a Difference by Raising Your Voice.”

or co-author of nine books including Michelle Obama’s “Impact on African American Women and Girls”, Duster has spent more than 20 years promoting the contributions of women and African Americans, including the impact made by her greatgrandmother, Ida B. Wells.

Wells was an prominent figure who was a journalist, educator

and leader in the Civil Rights Movement.

“I just hope that people can feel like they all can make a difference,” Duster said. “I think that we live in a country and society where there are so many things going on, and sometimes people feel like they don’t matter which can’t be further from the truth.”

A graduate from Dartmouth College, where she has earned numerous honors, most recently the 2019 Martin Luther King

Jr. Social Justice Award, Duster also works tirelessly to preserve the legacy of her great grandmother.

In 1989 she co-produced a PBS film, Ida B. Wells: A Passion for Justice, and she is currently the president of Ida B. Wells Memorial Foundation.

In addition, she helps support the Ida B.Wells-Barnett Museum in Holly Springs, Mississippi, is a member of the Ida B. Wells Commemorative Art Committee and on July 25, 2018, she worked with the Chicago City Council to rename Congress Parkway to Ida B. Wells Drive.

The renaming of the parkway in Chicago made history, as it was the first downtown Chicago street to be named after an African American woman.

When discussing if women empowerment was taking a substantial step forward, Duster said that there is positive change, but the nation still has a long way to go.

“If you just look at the 116th congress, it’s the largest number of women ever to go along with the most diverse group,” Duster said. “I think when you look at young girls who talk about it and dream about it, that just gives me a sense of hope that when they turn on the T.V. and see Michelle Obama or Hillary Clinton that gives them confidence that they can do it themselves.”

tute on Crime, Justice and Corrections at George Washington University, Austin works with federal, state and local government agencies, and philanthropic foundations to evaluate criminal justice practices and design research-based policy situations.

Austin has also served as the project director of the Bureau of Justice Assistance-funded corrections options technical assistance program.

Austin captivated the crowd with statistics about how there are 1.5 million people in prison in the United States alone, not including those who are also in jail — which is around 750,000.

The Sociology savant also went into deal about how even though more people are getting put away for longer sentences, it doesn’t always mean that they are doing heinous crimes.

At the end of the two-hour presentation, both of the speakers answered questions from the audiences regarding what they spoke about, hoping each person took at least one thing away from the gathering.

“For me, I just feel like what my great-grandmother did is something that people should know about,” Duster said.

“Through everything Dr. Austin and I spoke about tonight, we just hope it was well worth it for students and people of all ages to come out and listen.”

Dept. ensures safety with house checks Since 2018, the Woodridge Police Department has been doing house checks to those families on vacations that want to ensure the safety of their home

For residents of Woodridge, an extra sense of security is available to those who feel the need to utilize it.

Families that go on their vacation or just out of town for the weekend are now able to lower anxiety levels through the help of the Woodridge Police Department.

Since Aug. 6, 2018, the Woodridge

Police department has partnered with Front Line where people can request a home check online.

“All people have to do is go online, fill out the form, indicate what dates they will be gone and then the patrol officers will go and check in on the house,” said Jim Hoff, Management Analyst and Public Information Officer. “Right after the officer checks the house, the home owner will receive a email saying what time the officer checked the house, and also if there was any-

thing out of the ordinary.”

Hoff explained that this gesture to the community shows the dedication to the Police Department’s professional service, while trying to protect each individual and family that they can.

“Crimes and burglaries might increase when someone is out of town,” Hoff said. “This is a way we can progress our relationship with residents, and lower crime.”

In total, 130 registered vacation watches have happened, where

officers have completed a total of 1,618 checks.

“We have had great feedback that this is very reassuring for the people that are out of town,” Hoff said. “It’s helpful to know that patrol is in the area, watching over the house and I’ve also noticed they really appreciate that e-mail check to prove that we are in fact looking at the house and nothing is out of the ordinary.”

Hoff said another way for crime prevention to take place besides the online forms for patrol cars, is for people who are planning to go on vacation to tell a trusted neighbor.

Front Line also has a form for

people to request overnight parking for those that are very concerned of their property’s safety.

Hoff also said that even though the system is relatively new, more and more people are trusting it because burglars are more prone to commit a crime when the house is vacant.

“We try and make every effort to do checks when we can to ensure the safety of our residents homes,” Hoff said. “As a department, we also really appreciate hearing the positive feedback and the reassurance we give people when they are away, which is another great way we are building relations with the community.”

Local delivery nurse retires after 34 years After many years bringing babies into the world, long-time professional looks forward to retirement

After 34 years of helping parents welcome new babies into the world, Edward Hospital’s Sandy Bumber, RN, an obstetrics (OB) nurse, put away her stethoscope for good on October 20, 2018.

The Lockport resident marked the occasion by taking off on what she called Sandy B.’s retirement tour, covering Atlanta, Orlando and Myrtle Beach, S.C. In addition to more adventures ahead, her retirement will call for some adjustment.

“I loved it, and if I hadn’t gotten so old I would of kept going,” Bumber said jokingly. “I’m going to miss seeing my little babies, and seeing the moms and dads faces after brining that little creation to earth.”

Not long after graduating high school, Bumber married and started a family with her husband Jim. When the youngest of her five children was about 12, she decided it was time to pursue her other lifetime goal — a career as a labor and delivery nurse.

She knew school wouldn’t be easy while working and raising a family, but she persevered, earning an associate’s degree in nursing in 1984.

This was soon followed by a job offer in labor and delivery at Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet.

When Bumber came to Edward in 1998 with 14 years of nursing experience, she was hired as a charge nurse in labor and delivery.

Bumber has received the best endorsement for her role as a labor and delivery nurse from her own family members.

She was invited to participate in the delivery of 11 of her grandchildren when she worked at Silver Cross Hospital and 10 of her greatgrandchildren during her tenure at Edward.

Bumber’s close-knit family includes daughters Cindy Eaton, 55; Trish Ruzzini, 54; Jami Swearengen, 50; Becki Beal, 48 and son Shane Bumber, 52, and their spouses. In all, Sandy has 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

For the 74-year-old, she said that even though she wishes she could of still kept working, she has been enjoying this nice change of

pace while traveling and spending some good quality time with her family.

“I had some family members and friends throw me some parties right after which was really nice. I told my kids it’s kind of like dying at your own wake, but

you get to see all these people in real life come up and talk to you,” Bumber said jokingly.

In Bumber’s 34 years of experience, she said that she has seen a lot over the years, but being able to help out her family during the birthing experience is something

she will always cherish.

“I’ve been in a lot of my own families deliveries including some of my children and grandchildren,” Bumber said. “Those have been very special for me to say I was the delivery nurse for my great grandbabies.”

MISSION Local gymnasts have sights set on ending their careers on the highest note possible

Abby Carlson is not backing down from her determination at ending her gymnastics career on a high note.

The Downers Grove South senior earned her third trip to the state meet with a scintillating performance at the Hinsdale South Sectional on February 5.

Carlson won sectional titles on the uneven bars (9.525) and floor exercise (9.4) and was second in the all-around (36.975). She also advanced to state automatically on vault, where she tied for fifth (9.325).

The top five finishers on each event qualify for the Feb. 15-16 state meet at Palatine. She will be joined by teammate Andrea Davenport, who also qualified on floor, and Downers Grove North senior Brooke Stocki, who advanced on uneven bars.

“It’s just super exciting,” Carlson said. “Going into this meet I was feeling a lot more comfortable having (had) some experience at postseason meets where the pressure is high.”

Carlson has a chance to become the second-most decorated gymnast in program history if she can win two medals at state. She missed the state meet her sophomore year after tearing her ACL but returned

last season and finished second on floor, becoming the third Mustang to win a medal and the first to do so on floor.

Floor and bars figure to be Carlson’s best events. The top 10 finishers in Friday’s prelims advance to Saturday’s event finals, where the top five win medals.

“I feel really good,” Carlson said.

“I don’t want to jinx myself or put too much pressure on myself.

“The goal is just to think (about) two more hit routines, not necessarily worry about placing. I think once I focus on doing the routines I’ve been doing the past couple meets, I think the place and the score will come.”

Carlson’s floor routine is more difficult than the one she finished second with last year. Her first tumbling pass ends with a double pick, which she landed in impressive fashion at sectionals.

“That is new this season,” Carlson said. “It’s been pretty good.

With any new skill you kind of go through a phase where it’s a little rough and it’s hard, but then you finally nail it and you finally get comfortable.

“So I think about midway through the season I finally started feeling comfortable with it and was able to execute it how I want to.”

also qualified on floor, scoring 9.1.

She made the state finals on balance beam as a sophomore, finishing ninth, but did not qualify last season.

“At this point for me it’s all about having fun, enjoying my last year and the last experience,” said Davenport, who tied for eighth in the all-around (34.85) and was 14th on beam (8.7).

Davenport is considering continuing her gymnastics career at Gustavus Adolphus College but hasn’t picked a college yet.

“If I don’t go there I will join a dance team (at another college),” Davenport said. “I really like to dance and do floor.”

Downers Grove South coach Kristyn Campos, whose team finished second in the team standings with 138.175 but fell short of advancing to state, likes what Carlson and Davenport have brought to the program.

“They’ve done a lot of hard work over their time here,” Campos said.

“I’m really proud of both of them for working really hard and finding their groove at the end here. It’s always nice to see them go (to state) together.”

While Carlson has been a star since her freshman year and comes from a top gymnastics family that includes older sister Kayla and younger sisters Katrina, a freshman, Davenport has been less heralded.

“I think it means a lot to her,” Campos said. “Her number one love was beam and she had a little struggle today to start off on that and (it did) not go the way she wanted, but to see her push through and still get that goal, it speaks volumes to how much she really wanted it.”

Carlson and Davenport are part of a generation of gymnasts that helped the Mustangs become a local power in recent years.

While Carlson will not do gymnastics in college, she hasn’t con-

templated what her legacy will be.

“I haven’t thought about that yet,” Carlson said. “I think it just shows that we’ve had a bunch of amazing classes ahead of us that have kind of guided us through this, whether it being my older sister or older teammates.

“People really helped us become the leaders on the team and the gymnasts that we are and hopefully (we are able) to bring that to the underclassmen so they can continue to keep this program going.”

Katrina Carlson capped her freshman year by finishing sixth on floor (8.925), eighth in the allaround (34.85), 10th on vault (9.2) and 23rd on bars (8.1). Senior Gianna Grippo was 29th on beam (7.35).

Downers Grove North finished third in the team standings with 137.55 points and had a whopping seven individual sectional qualifiers.

Leading the way was Stocki, who last year became the Trojans’ first state individual event finalist in 15 years when she took sixth on beam and 10th on bars.

Stocki is headed back to state, but only on bars after she nearly missed the meet due to stomach flu. She finished 10th in the allaround (34.75), tied for eighth on beam (8.9225), tied for 20th with teammates Cherilyn Parrilli and Mia Bowers on floor (8.3) and 29th on vault (8.225).

But Stocki stuck her bars routine for a third-place 9.3.

“Unfortunately, my senior gymnastics season has been filled with sickness and injury,” Stocki said. “I was really scared I wasn’t going to be able to compete at sectionals. A couple hours before the sectional meet I was sitting in a hospital bed getting IV fluids because of dehydration.

“My goal at the beginning of the season was to have as successful of a season as my junior year, and on Tuesday, my only goal was to be

able to compete. My performance was not my best, but I am proud of myself for pushing through and just being able to compete. Going to state again after such a rough season is the best outcome I could have asked for.”

The future looks bright for North, which graduates Stocki and Lily Nowka, who was 21st on bars (8.15).

Sophomore Gabrella Stellato missed qualifying automatically on beam by just .025, finishing sixth with a 9.075. She also took ninth on bars (8.5).

Bowers, a sophomore, was 15th all-around (34.85), 17th on vault (9.0) and 24th on bars (7.85), while Parilli, a freshman, took 21st on vault (8.9). Junior Lauren Lucina placed 15th on beam (8.15) and sophomore Kenna Cinotte was 24th on floor (8.2).

Know what’s at stake with cosigner DEAR DAVE, My mom is single, and she co-signed on my student loans for college. Would it affect her credit if I couldn’t or didn’t make the payments?

TERRI DEAR TERRI, Yes, it would. The truth is, your mom shouldn’t have co-signed for you in the first place. There’s only one reason lenders want a co-signer, and that’s because they’re afraid the person taking out the loan won’t

be able to pay back what’s owed.

You’ll be trashing your and your mom’s credit if you don’t pay the bills on time. If she co-signed for you, and you don’t do the right thing and pay back the loans, she’ll start getting phone calls looking for the money, too. I don’t think you want to subject your mom to the stress and hassle of collector calls or bad marks on her credit, do you?

Believe me, I understand what happened. Your mom loves you, and she wants the best for you.

She’s willing to do whatever it takes to help her daughter succeed. What I want you both to understand going forward is that the idea you

have to borrow money to attend college — or do anything else, really — is a myth. There are many ways to get a great education, and find excellent career opportunities, without borrowing a dime. Scholarships and grants are everywhere these days. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with working before and during college to help cash-flow an education, or you can begin your studies at a community college where the costs are much less.

In addition to four-year schools and community colleges, anyone looking to further their education shouldn’t ignore the possibility of trade or technical schools.
