Girls lead Jefferson Junior High chess team to 2nd straight conference tourney championship

Jefferson Junior High successfully defended its championship during the Southeast DuPage Elementary Athletic Association’s seasonending chess tournament, and two girls were at the helm.

The team took first place at the tournament – held Jan. 30 at Lace School in Darien. It was the second straight year the team finished at the top, as well as the second year the tournament came down to the final few matches.

The win was also the fourth championship for the team in the past five years.

The Jefferson Junior High team from Woodridge was tied with the Gower Middle School team from Burr Ridge at 21.5 points, heading into the final round.

Each team consisted of 10 players ranked by skill level, from first board to 10th board.

Each team member plays one game per round against an opponent at the same board level, and teams are awarded 1 point for a win and a half point for a draw.

Jefferson earned an impressive 8.5 points in the fourth and final round, bringing the team’s point

total to 30 and taking the title.

During the two-month season, the team of mostly eighth graders was led by Amber Moca at first board and Prathika Senthil at second board. The combination led the team to consistent victories, with Jefferson tying for second in the season standings after first-place Westview Hills Middle School in Westmont.

Coach Joe Wechman said it was the first time in his 13 years as a coach that both top board positions were held by girls.

While boys have traditionally dominated school chess teams, this year’s tournament showed that the landscape of competitive chess appears to be changing.

Several of the eight conference teams featured one or two girls in the top 10 spots.

The Jefferson team also rose to the top of the tournament thanks to three board winners who beat out the rest of the competitors at their position.

Rohan Sethi had a 4-0 record on third board, Kyle Leonard had a 4-0 record on fourth board, and Jack Clark tied as sixth board winner with a 3-1 tournament record.

Strong finishes from Ayyan Ahmad (fifth board), Nolan Mason (seventh board), Alex Hernandez (eighth board), Joseph Williams (ninth board) and Osman Khan (tenth board) also gave the Jefferson team the edge to repeat the title.

Jefferson has taken home a first or second place trophy at the conference tournament for the past five years, and placed also first in the conference standings last year.

The Jefferson chess dynasty was buoyed by several players who inspired younger siblings to join the team even before reaching junior high: Eighth graders Prathika Senthil began competing three years ago, Kyle Leonard earned a top 10 spot four years ago, and Amber Moca starting playing in matches five years ago, when the team claim its first conference tournament victory in 21 years.

Budget issues dominate District 58 legislative breakfast About 80 guests attend the event Four state and federal legislators addressed proposed District 58 budget cuts, unfunded mandates, potential property tax freezes and more during the district’s annual legislative breakfast.

About 80 guests attended this year’s event, which allowed District 58 board of education members, staff, the middle school student council, PTA representatives, village and community leaders, and residents to meet local elected officials and discuss current education issues affecting District 58. U.S. Congressman Peter Roskam, state Sen. Christine Radogno, and state reps. Patti Bellock and Ron Sandack participated in the Jan. 29 legislative breakfast at O’Neill Middle School.

Herrick Principal Matt Neustadt and student council members from Herrick and O’Neill schools, introduced the legislators, who then answered several prepared questions asked by District 58’s

legislative committee members.

When asked about the new federal Every Student Succeeds Act, Roskam said he believes it will benefit District 58 and empower local leaders, not federal officials, to make local education decisions.

The state legislators on the panel were asked about the Illinois State Board of Education’s recently proposed fiscal 2017 budget, which would move $305 million from a mandated categorical special education fund to general state aid.

District 58 added that the proposed budget would cause the district to lose approximately a half million dollars, or $106 per student.

All of the state legislators said they would not support the current proposed budget, and shared the belief that it is unlikely to pass in its current form.

Bellock referenced Gov. Bruce Rauner’s recent state of the state speech, saying she believed that the governor intends to increase the state’s K-12 education spending, which could benefit District 58.

Legislators also answered questions related to proposed property tax freezes, Illinois State

Board of Education spending and unfunded mandate relief recommendations. In addition to the four legislators, U.S. Congressman Bill Foster’s outreach coordinator, Brian Robb, attended in Foster’s place.

During District 58 Superintendent Kari Cremascoli’s closing remarks, she thanked the legislators for their time and requested their support of equitable public education.

Cremascoli also summarized District 58’s current and potential financial strains, and explained that District 58 can only increase its revenues from local taxes through the Consumer Price Index or by referendum. The district said CPI has been less than 1 percent for several years, and District 58 has not successfully passed a referendum in District 58 since 1951.

“We do not have a way to tap into that presumed property wealth to address or make up for these proposed cuts,” Cremascoli said.

“When programs that are good for kids are inadequately funded and when unfunded mandates draw upon the limited resources that do exist, students are impacted.”

Library begins recruitment of next director Downers Grove Public Library is moving on to the next phase of its search for new director, releasing a detailed job description and inviting potential candidates to apply.

The library announced last week that executive search firm Bradbury Associates, which is assisting the library in the search, released the job posting in order to begin recruitment efforts. It reflects the priorities and interests expressed by the library board, staff and the community during a series of meetings held in January.

“The description calls for a dynamic library manager who can engage with the community and help the library build on the developments in service, technology, and facilities it has achieved in the past several years,” the library said in a news release announcing the posting. Bradbury Associates will not only post the job opening on its own website, according to the library.

The firm will also post the position on other library industry websites active recruit candidates.

“They will contact experienced library professionals who are not job-hunting, but who may respond to an excellent opportunity such as the Downers Grove Public Library position,” the library added.

The recruitment phase will continue through March 27.

In April and May, the library board will begin screening candidate materials, conduct preliminary interviews with 6 to 8 semifinalists and final interviews with 2 to 4 finalists, and check references and begin negotiations with the selected candidate.

The next director is expected to begin work in June or July.

Man charged with ‘violently’ shaking infant daughter Bail has been set at $1 million for a Downers Grove man charged with violently shaking his 3-month-old daughter.

Timothy Churchill, 20, of the 4200 block of Lindley, was charged with one count of aggravated battery to a child, according to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Prosecutors said that Churchill is accused of violently shaking his daughter on at least five occasions and causing significant head injuries, including bilateral subdural hematomas and retinal hemorrhaging.

“The allegations against Mr. Churchill in this case are extremely disturbing,” State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a

news release. “ Churchill and the mother of his daughter, a Naperville resident, brought the girl to the emergency room at Edward Hospital in Naperville at approximately 2 a.m. on Jan. 23.

The state’s attorney’s office said the infant was unresponsive and Edward staff discovered the girl had “substantial head injuries.” She was transported to Lurie Children’s Hospital, where she underwent emergency brain surgery to relieve intracranial pressure.

The Naperville Police Department conducted an investigation into the source of the infant’s injuries and determined that Churchill had violently shook his daughter

on at least five occasions. He was arrested and charged with aggravated battery to a child – a Class X felony.

“The Naperville Police Department is committed to doing everything possible in the pursuit of justice and helping those victims who are too young to have a voice,” Naperville Chief of Police Robert Marshall said. “This case has been a tragic situation, my heart goes out to the families involved.”

Churchill is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 29.

If he is able to post bond, the state’s attorney’s office said Churchill can have no contact with anyone under 18 years of age and no contact with the victim or her mother.

Police: man possessed ‘thousands’ of images containing child pornography A Downers Grove man was arrested Feb. 2 for allegedly being in possession of thousands of images containing child pornography.

Anthony Damaska, 28, of the 600 block of Sherman St., was charged with two counts of dissemination of child pornography (Class X felony) and two counts of possession of child pornography (Class 2 felony), according to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Bond was set at $100,000 for

Damaska, who is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 29.

“Every image and every video allegedly possessed by Mr. Damaska represents yet another innocent victim of child pornography,” State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a news release.

As part of an ongoing investigation into the possession and dissemination of child pornography, authorities with the Naperville Police Department located an IP address originating from the

Downers Grove area in August 2015 that allegedly contained a high amount of possible child pornography downloads.

The investigation led detectives to Damaska and a search warrant was executed at his Downers Grove home, where he was taken into custody.

The state’s attorney said conditions for Damaska should he be able to post bond include no contact with children under 18 years of age and no computer or Internet access.

Ready or not, tax season will be upon us sooner than we may like. Did you have to frantically search for your financial paperwork last year? Did you have to forego some deductions you deserved because you couldn’t find the supporting paperwork? Did you have to pay your tax preparer an additional amount to sort out the jumble of information you dumped in his or her office at the last minute?

Here are some tips to make this year more organized. There are many ways to organize paperwork, so choose the ideas that resonate with you and adjust the system to fit your needs.

First, choose a container to hold your documents. Several things to consider when deciding what container to use include: where you will keep it, how easy it is to put papers in it and retrieve papers from it, how secure it will allow your papers to be, and whether or not you’re a “visual” person who would prefer a somewhat open container.

To simplify the remainder of this discussion, I’ll assume you’re using a file cabinet. However, my comments are relevant no matter what type of container you use.

Next, create broad categories to group papers. If your categories are too

For example, rather than create separate categories for doctor’s bills, prescription receipts, and medical insurance, you might want a category called “Medical.” Be sure to name the categories the way you think of them. For example, you may prefer to call the category “Health,” rather than “Medical.”

Use hanging file folders to contain each broad category. Place the folders inside the filing container, and put a well-labeled plastic file tab on the front of the each file. Use a bold, black marker to write the labels, or print them with your computer or a label maker – this will make the file names stand out and easy to read.

You should also use manila folders inside the hanging folders. If any particular category has a lot of papers in it, manila file folders can help you create sub-categories. For example, for the hanging file folder labeled “Medical”

The beauty of doing it this way is that all the medical information is in the same general location so you don’t have to hunt through your files for each subcategory.

Put the most current papers in the front of each folder. This will make the information used most frequently easy to find.

Additionally, consider using colored file folders to distinguish various categories. For example, all of the “Financial” files (e.g., Investments, Taxes, Bank Accounts, etc.) can be in green folders, while all of the “House” files (e.g., Mortgage, Maintenance, etc.) can be in blue folders, etc. This will allow you to easily zoom in on the appropriate section of your file cabinet and quickly find the file you want.

Although properly setting up your files may be quite time consuming, you’ll reap the benefits for years to come.

The Redwings open play against the winner of No. 16 Joliet Central and No. 17 Aurora East at 6 p.m.

Feb. 17 in the Aurora East Regional.

A win would put the Redwings in the regional final at 7 p.m. Feb. 19 against the winner of No. 8 Plainfield North and No. 9 Plainfield East.

Sectional semifinal play would be at 7 p.m. Feb. 22 with the regional final at 7 p.m. Feb. 25 at Benet.

Downers Grove North and South are both in the Lyons Sectional.

The Trojans are the No. 5 seed and play at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 17 against the winner of No. 12 Argo and No. 21 Kelly.

A win puts them in the regional final at St. Ignatius against likely No. 4 Kenwood.

No. 11 Downers South is in its own regional and will face No. 6

Lyons at 7 p.m. Feb. 17. A win would set up at 7 p.m. Feb. 19 against likely foe No. 3 Simeon.

GyMnasTics Downers Grove South took home its own regional title last week with a 144.675 total to automatically advance to the Hinsdale Central Sectional.

Freshman Abby Carlson won the all-around competition with a score of 36.925. Kayla Carlson (36.75) and Emily Tom (35.6) also finished in the top five and advanced automatically to sectionals.

In the floor exercise, Tom finished in first with a 9.3, while Kayla Carlson (9.175), Andrea Davenport (9.025) and Abby Carlson (9.0) all advanced.

Hall of Fame On Jan. 16, Downers North inducted four new members to its Athletic Hall of Fame: Tommy Edwards (Class of 2004), Garrett Edwards (Class of 2006), Burke Sims (Class of 2009) and Haley Sims (Class of 2011).

Tommy Edwards’ highlights include: First team All-State football in 2003, All-WSC Football in 2002 and 2003, rushed for over 1,000 yards in 2002 and 2003, led North football to the WSC-Silver Conference championship in 2003, member of the final four football team in 2003, was named to the All-WSC Basketball team in 2002 and 2003 and the All-WSC Baseball team in 2004.

Garrett Edwards was first team All- State and All-WSC in football in 2004 and 2005, led the 2004 Trojans’ football team to IHSA State Championship, rushed for over 1,300 yards in 2004 and 2005, AllWSC Basketball team in 2005 and 2006, three-year letter winner in Football at the University of Illinois

Dozens of spectacular ice sculptures will line the streets of downtown Downers Grove this weekend, as part of what has become one of the village’s most popular annual events.

The Downtown Downers Grove Ice Festival will run Feb. 12-14, offering residents and attendees a wide variety of entertainment and activities to bid the winter season a fond farewell. A castle, leprechaun, Eiffel Tower and Snoopy will be among the more than 40 pre-carved ice sculptures displayed during the event, which is organized by the Downers Grove Downtown Management Corporation.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to watch carvers demonstrate their craft in person throughout the weekend. Live carving demonstrations are set to begin Friday at 5:30 p.m. on the southeast corner of Main and

If the property is a condominium and the foreclosure takes place after 1/1/2007, purchasers other than the mortgagees will be required to pay any assessment and legal fees due under The Condominium Property Act, 765 ILCS 605/9(g)(1) and (g)(4).

If the property is located in a common interest community, purchasers other than mortgagees will be required to pay any assessment and legal fees due under the Condominium Property Act, 765 ILCS 605/18.5(g-1).

If the sale is set aside for any reason, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the deposit paid. The Purchaser shall have no further recourse against the Mortgagor, the Mortgagee or the Mortgagee’s attorney.

Upon payment in full of the amount bid, the purchaser shall receive a Certificate of Sale, which will entitle the purchaser to a Deed to the real estate after Confirmation of the sale. The successful purchaser has the sole responsibility/expense of evicting any tenants or other individuals presently in possession of the subject premises.
