Weekend fire damages apartment building roof Westmont Fire Department officials are still investigating At 9:46 a.m. on January 27, the Westmont Fire Department received numerous 911 calls reporting a fire in an apartment building at 73 Piers Drive. Upon arrival, fire department companies reported heavy fire through the roof of a 12unit, 3-story apartment building.

Westmont Fire Department command upgraded the fire to a box alarm and later it was upgraded to a 2-11 fire, which brought in agencies from Tri-State, Downers Grove, Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills, Oak Brook, Darien-Woodridge, Pleasantview, OakBrook Terrace, Addison, Lisle-Woodridge, and Argonne. The fire was brought under control within two hours.

One firefighter was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

He was treated and released. Red Cross was called to the scene and

assisted numerous residents with finding lodging for at least a few days. Westmont Police Department and Westmont Emergency Management were on the scene throughout the incident and assisted with traffic control.

“We want to thank some of the residents in the building who called 911 and also ran around on all 3 floors notifying their neighbors of the fire. Without their quick action, the outcome of this emergency could have been much worse,” said Deputy Chief Steve Riley.

Westmont Fire Department officials are still investigating the cause of this fire.

New police chief moved up through ranks Gillette grateful for ‘wide array of experiences’

The leadership torch has been passed, as Downers Grove Police Chief Shanon Gillette assumes the position left vacant following Kurt Bluder’s retirement earlier this month.

The Downers Grove Village Council confirmed Gillette’s appointment to police chief at its Jan. 9 regular meeting, at which point members of his family and current and past law enforcement officials were on hand.

“It’s an exciting time for us,” Gillette said in a phone interview. “I’m grateful for the opportunity, the experience. [The support] throughout the community has been

amazing.”

Gillette has been a member of Downers Grove Police since 1993.

Since that time, he served the public in various capacities, with previous assignments working as a patrol officer, community-oriented police officer, field training officer, detective, patrol sergeant, sergeant of community-oriented policing, lieutenant of patrols, lieutenant of investigations and deputy chief of investigations.

“I have been very pleased to have a wide array of experiences,” Gillette said.

Gillette gave credit to the law enforcement officials that came before him for leading by example.

“I’ve been fortunate to have key mentors above encouraging me to continue my education and seek

added training,” he said. “My oldest brother is a police chief in Round Lake, and he’s been a huge mentor.

I’ve had many mentors encouraging me.”

The Downers Grove Police Department prides itself on striving for excellence.

“We’re fortunate to have an exceptional department and community,” Gillette said. “Our biggest challenge internally is maintaining high standards. Externally, the role of an officer has evolved.”

Police officers often have to wear many hats to help ensure that the

community is safe in today’s world.

“They go on to connect members of the community with what they need,” Gillette said. “We can’t be experts at everything, but we’re able to direct them to resources that can help.”

Gillette said it is clear that law enforcement officials have a positive and encouraging relationship with the Downers Grove community and referenced, as an example, the success of the police department’s public education program, in which they partner with area schools to establish relationships with the public, so as to help ensure that in the event of an emergency, connections are already made.

Gillette has a list of priorities he intends to be committed to during his time as police chief, including efforts to maintain standards of excellence, listen and learn from staff, encourage and equip future leaders, promote officer safety, and

address employee wellness.

At a time when law enforcement officials face scrutiny sometimes for what they do and what they don’t do, Gillette said it is important for police officers to remember why they decided to serve.

“Every officer embarks on their career to help people and make a positive difference,” he said. “We work hard to reaffirm that and encourage officers to maintain the interest they came in with. We hard to focus on why we started our police work in the first place.”

Gillette said even with the reputation that police officers sometimes get, he remains “enthusiastic” about encouraging young people to consider careers in the field.

“Recruiting well-educated and high quality candidates is important,” he said. “I would encourage them to pursue a career in law enforcement.”

She has also been involved with the Illinois Association for Gifted Children, International Literacy Association, National Council of Teachers of English, and the National Middle School Association.

She has been a member of the Illinois Principals Association for seven years.

Quattrone is involved in the local community as a school district liaison for the Westmont

100 Year Anniversary Committee and Westmont First Committee, Westmont Holly Days Parade Committee, Westmont Special Events organization, Westmont Illinois READS Chairperson, Rotary International, and the Westmont Strategic Plan Committee. She was previously named Best of Berwyn Outstanding Educator of the Year in 2008 and CUSD 201 Westmont Educator of the Year in 2012.

The Illinois Principals Association is a leadership organization which serves over 5,200 educational leaders throughout the state of Illinois. The Assistant Principal of the Year winner was selected from a pool of region nominees provided by the 21 Regions of the Illinois Principals Association. Metra hosts open house Feb. 15 on fare structure

Due to popular demand, another free Women’s Self-Defense Workshop is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 9 from 5:308:30 p.m. at the Lisle Police Department, 5040 Lincoln Avenue. This free 3-hour hands-on, informative event provides women of all ages with practical skills to help keep them

Metra is hosting a series of public open houses in February throughout the Chicago area regarding proposed changes to their fare structure. In the summer of 2016, Metra began a study to evaluate their fees and determine opportunities for potential changes. Their work included con-

ducting a survey of Metra customers in the spring of 2017.

Based on survey results and discussions with Metra’s Board of Directors, several changes to their fare structure are now being considered. Metra is asking the public to provide feedback on the proposed changes.

Eight open houses will be held around the Chicago region beginning February 1 to present the changes to the public and seek feedback. An area open house is Thursday, February 15 from 4-7 p.m. at the Clarendon Hills Village Hall, 1 N. Prospect Avenue. Newspapers remain strong voice for information, democracy

BY TARA MCCLELLAN MCANDREW FOR THE ILLINOIS PRESS ASSOCIATION Like so much in Illinois, the origins of its newspapers were tied to politics and patronage.

This land was a wild, largely unpopulated, western territory when its first newspaper sprang up - the single-sheet Illinois Herald, published in 1814 in Kaskaskia. Its proprietor landed the job of printing territorial and national business through his friend, the territorial governor, according to the July 1918 Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society.

Some early newspapers were created to support or oppose a political candidate or issue, like the anti-slavery Edwardsville Advocate. Illinois newspapers remained political for decades in the 1800s, according to the ISHS Journal.

Publications faced many challenges: bad transportation, unreliable mail delivery and a lack of subscribers.

As more settlers came to Illinois in the middle 1800s and transportation improved, newspapers fared better. The advent of railroads precipitated a newspaper boom.

Technological improvements such as the telegraph helped, too. So did wood-pulp, which made paper more economical. A lot of weeklies became dailies and foreign language newspapers arose for immigrant communities.

By the Civil War, Illinois had almost 300 newspapers, according to the Illinois Newspaper Project. While the war increased the desire for news, it brought censorship. Government restricted news sent by telegram and shut down newspapers for not supporting the war. This included the Chicago Times and the Jonesboro Gazette, according to the Abraham Lincoln Classroom online and the website of the Gazette’s successor, the Gazette-Democrat.

Chicago’s papers were decimated in 1871 by the city’s Great Fire. Within two days, all of the major dailies were in business again, according to the Illinois Newspapers Project. Others were gone forever.

Illinois’ newspapers were thriving and diversifying in 1880. The state had about 1,000 newspapers, with at least one in every county. Special interest papers were increasing. In 1899, Chicago was home to a newspaper for African-Americans, the Broad-Ax. More women, such as Myra Bradwell, were in the field. She had started the successful Chicago Legal News in 1868.

In 1902, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign began offering journalism classes, partly in response to a call for more professionalism in media. Twenty-five years later, it opened a journalism school.

Radio brought a new threat, so did the stock market crash of 1929 and the Depression. As World War II raged, newspapers cashed in old machines and other scrap metal for the war effort. Editors and publishers had to comply, once again, with military censorship, and a plea from the governor. According to the Illinois Press Association’s publication from February-March 1942, the governor asked Il-

linois newspapers to “impress the public … that this is a war to finish.”

After the war, the IPA fought for open government. It created a committee to investigate complaints of government inhibiting the media’s access to news. It’s an issue that remains today.

Newspapers have undergone drastic changes since the 1950s because of technology and competition. Insiders needlessly worried that the new invention called television would be papers’ death knell. But the Watergate investigation that brought down President Richard Nixon in the 1970s fueled a new generation of reporters and readers.

The end of the 1990s and the early 2000s brought the internet and cellphones, which claimed readers and advertising dollars. In response, chains bought many independent newspapers, then reduced staff and consolidated processes to decrease costs. Papers went online and charged for digital subscriptions.

Some say print newspapers are doomed; others say their readership is greater than ever because of the internet. What’s the future? No one knows, but so far the industry has survived every competitor that’s come along.

Man gets 12 years for shaking infant daughter DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced today that a Downers Grove man charged with repeatedly shaking his three-month-old daughter was sentenced to 12 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Timothy Churchill, 22 of 4220 Lindley, appeared in court this morning where he entered a plea of guilty to one count of Aggravated Battery to a Child, (Class X Felony) in front of Judge John Kinsella, who handed down the sentence. On February 3, 2016, Churchill appeared in bond court where bond was set at $1 million. He remained in custody since that then.

On January 23, 2016, at approximately 2 a.m., Churchill and the mother of his daughter, who lives in Naperville, brought the girl to the emergency room at Edward Hospital in Naperville. The baby was unresponsive. Upon discov-

ering substantial head injuries, the baby was transported to Lurie Children’s Hospital where she underwent emergency brain surgery to relieve intracranial pressure. An investigation conducted by the Naperville Police Department into the source of the infant’s injuries revealed that Churchill violently shook his daughter causing significant head injuries including bilateral subdural hematomas and retinal hemorrhaging.

“The sentence handed down by Judge Kinsella this morning under-

scores the severity of the injuries that Mr. Churchill inflicted upon his own infant daughter,” Berlin said. “Child abuse has no place in a civilized society and remains a top priority in my office as the victims in such cases are arguably society’s most vulnerable. I would like to thank the Naperville Police Department for their efforts on this heartbreaking case. I would like to thank the medical staffs at Edward Hospital as well as Lurie Children’s Hospital for the outstanding care they provided to this young victim. I would also like to thank the DuPage County Children’s Center as well as Assistant State’s Attorneys Cathy DeLaMar and Michael Pawl for their efforts in holding Mr. Churchill responsible for what he did to his own daughter.”

Churchill must serve 85 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

In July of last year, Downers Grove native Tony Granato got a call from Jim Johannson, a friend and USA Hockey’s assistant executive director of hockey operations and general manager of the 2018 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team, to tell him he was selected as the head coach of the team that will open play Feb. 14 against Slovenia in PyeongChang, South Korea.

The pair looked forward to challenging for a gold medal – together.

Unfortunately, Johannson died unexpectedly in his sleep on Jan. 21. He was 53.

“This obviously put a big black cloud over getting ready because this was Jimmy’s project, this was Jimmy’s team. This is something he built and not only was he our leader, but he is our friend that we wanted so much to share this experience with,” said Granato, who was a teammate of Johannson’s on the 1988 Olympic team. “I hate using let’s win one for someone else. We are so inspired for so many different reasons and he will be there with us in spirit and thought and in every decision we make we will think of Jimmy and what he would do and how

he would want us to do it. That itself is inspiring enough.

“It is our goal – and it always has been – to come home with gold medal. Does this make it easier or harder or different? I don’t know that. All I know is we will go there inspired to make Jimmy proud and be the best that we can be. He created this for us to win. He put us in a position with all the work he did to be ready for this and we have to focus on doing just that. I would love to represent him in a way he expected us to and make him proud.”

The team Johannson built and Granato will coach is the first team in 20 years that will not feature players currently in the National Hockey League.

“This is an opportunity for players, who are great players, to be on the Olympic stage that they didn’t think they would ever have. That opportunity is really exciting,” Granato said. “There is more pure Olympic feel for this. I am not at all criticizing the way it has been done the last five Olympics. There was nothing better than to have Patrick Kane and Joe Pavelski and Jonathan Quick and Sidney Crosby playing with and against each other. That was center stage for our game and it showed our

GOLD FROM PAGE 7 best athletes, but I also think there is a purity to the Olympics that when you get there, you are at the peak of your career. That is your first opportunity for a world stage and that is different.

In 1980 and ’84 and ’88 and ’92 – all the players that played in that, no one knew and they were building to get that opportunity. This is somewhat that same feeling. As Jimmy said, there are 25 stories that are ready to be heard. When the stars go, it is a phenomenal event, but I think this has the potential to be more exciting. A lot of the uncertainties, a lot of unknowns and a lot of chances for athletes to take advantage of the Olympic moment and make a career of it.”

Granato made a career out of his Olympic opportunity, as he skated for three different teams over a 13-year NHL career.

He began his run with the New York Rangers (1988-90), then spent six years with the Los Angeles Kings (1990-96) before finishing his career with the San Jose Sharks (1996-01) where he was an All-Star during the 199697 season.

Granato know the Olympics were a big part of his story as a player and he looks forward to the stories of this year’s team coming out.

“When I turn on the Olympics and I watch skiing or bobsled or gymnastics, I don’t know who they are until I watch them and then I watch the stories and then you get hooked on falling in love with a new hero. That is more of what the Olympic spirit was and maybe still was throughout the NHL days, but I think this is an exciting time for the fans, but also for the players and the participants. I really do think the fans will appreciate and enjoy it as much as they did with the NHL players.”

The purity of the Olympics was one of the things that made Granato set his sights on playing at the highest levels of the sport, in particular, the 1980 ‘Miracle on Ice’ team.

“We were in Downers in the basement and we would be Stan Mikita and Bonny Hull and Tony Esposito and Pit Martin and all those guys. But when the U.S.

“There was all of a sudden a new group of heroes, new inspiring thing for a young hockey player to see. I was 15 when it happened. I didn’t know anything about the Olympics or even anything about college hockey and then I see 20 college kids wearing U.S.A. sweaters and that was a big moment for me as far as giving myself heroes and inspirational challenges to try and make it to the best level of hockey. Then I had a chance eight years later to be on an Olympic team. Those are the guys that set the tone for USA hockey. They jump-started the development, jump-started opportunities for Americans to be respected professionally and internationally. Those guys were a great team to learn from for our team – I didn’t know Mike Eruzione, Jim Craig, Neal Broten, Jack O’Callahan, but within two or three days after the start of the Olympics, I knew their name, their number, where they came from; I think that is how it was when I was a kid and how the Olympics were.”

After retiring as a player, Granato stayed around the NHL. He was an assistant coach and head coach for the Colorado Avalanche (2002-2009), Pittsburgh Penguins (2009-14) and Detroit Red Wings (2014-16).

With the Penguins, Granato helped lead the team to four consecutive playoff appearances from 2009-2014. Granato’s duties with the team included oversight of all forwards, a group he directed to an NHL-best 3.38 goal-per-game average during the 2012-13 season.

In 215 games as head coach of the Avalanche, Granato recorded 104 wins, two playoff appearances and a Northwest Division title (2002-03). He is now the current head coach the University of Wisconsin-Madison, of his alma mater.

He served as an assistant coach on the 2014 Olympic team, that fell to Finland in the bronze medal game, before being chosen as the 2018 head coach

“I know I can’t play anymore, so the next best thing is to coach. Jimmy in the last month was able to call all 25 players, 23 of them on January 1, to tell them that they were part of the Olympic team and he said that was one of the greatest thing he ever did in his life was to tell kids, ‘Hey, you are on the Olympic team.’ The feeling he got and the emotions attached with that with the athletes hearing that are one of the best feelings ever on both ends of that call,” Granato said. “Well, Jimmy made that call to me last. July telling I was selected to be the coach of the team and I felt the same way those athletes did. It is an honor. There is no greater feeling and sense of pride than to be able to represent your country and be part of an Olympic team, so it ranks up there with anything. I would love to say that I could still play, because nothing can replace playing in the Olympics, but to have the opportunity to go back and be part of another staff and be able to be part of the process of putting the team together to try and do something special is as good as it gets.”

Granato is not the only member of the Team USA staff to have ties to the Chicagoland area.

One of his assistants, is fourtime Olympian and NHL Hallof-Famer Chris Chelios, who was grew up in Chicago and played for the Chicago Blackhawks from 1990-99.

“He has turned a ton of his attention now to coaching and development and to have him on the staff makes it a heck of a lot more comfortable going into the Olympics. We have a great staff with Scott Young, who played in four Olympics and has worn the USA sweater for many years, Keith Allain, who has been part of a ton of American staffs to go along with Ron Rolston, so our staff has tons of experience internationally,” Granato said.

“Chris is as big of a competitor as anyone that ever wore a jersey. His experience team being a player on four Olympic teams and being a captain of all of them, he is USA Hockey. There is no better person to have on the bench next to you than Chris Chelios.”

They’ll be renting for a while, and I have an unoccupied rental house. Do you think renting to family is a bad idea?

KATHERINE DEAR KATHERINE, Renting to family can work out just fine, as long as there are clearly understood rules and boundaries in place ahead of time. Both parties should understand there must be a landlord and tenant relationship with regards to all aspects of the rental agreement.

Tenants have the right to expect a landlord to make needed repairs promptly, pay the taxes and insurance on a property on time, and do all the other things a landlord should do as outlined in the rental agreement. As a landlord, you have the right to expect the rent to be paid early or on time, and for the tenant to respect the property and guidelines in the rental agreement. A landlord also has the right to evict a tenant through fair, legal process if they violate the terms of the agreement.

When it comes to these business dealings, you’re wearing the landlord cap, and they’re wearing

aspect of the rental agreement and relationship before anything is signed. If you don’t, there’s a possibility someone will develop a sense of entitlement about something.

And that’s no good in any type of relationship!

County, Lisle pact saves taxpayers money The DuPage County Board approved an intergovernmental agreement with the Village of Lisle on Jan. 23 that represents taxpayer savings in excess of $60,000 per year. The agreement calls for the County to share expertise and provide specific information technology services for Lisle. Under the plan, one DuPage County staff person with expertise in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) will dedicate two days a week working to

maintain the Village of Lisle’s GIS system. This includes providing data compilation, data analysis and map creation services. The Village’s GIS Coordinator left last fall to pursue an opportunity in another community. Through the intergovernmental agreement with DuPage County, the Village estimates savings to be approximately $62,000 on an annualized basis, which includes personnel and related support costs.

“This is a perfect example of

the types of taxpayer savings we can achieve when we leverage the staff and expertise we have within our community to benefit each other,” said Kevin Wiley, Chairman of the DuPage County Technology Committee. “In situations like this, everyone wins and the residents enjoy optimal service.” “This partnership represents an excellent result for the residents of Lisle and the rest of DuPage County,” said Lisle Mayor Chris Pecak.
