The village of Woodridge is home to Cypress Cove Family Aquatic Park, Orchard Hill Sports Field Complex and Falcon Ridge Park.

And now there is the Athletic Recreation Center.

Dubbed as ARC, this new $18.7 million development—which totals to 76,291 square feet opened Jan. 2 at 8201 S. Janes Ave. in Woodridge—allows for a number of different sports and recreational activities.

“It’s been a long time planning to see it open to residents to fulfill a long-term need is amazing,” said Mike Adams, Executive Director at Woodridge Park District. “We really never had a space for sports and recreation. Now, we can hold yearround events for the community.”

The idea to build the ARC dates

back to 1999.

The project didn’t start to come together until 2009, at which time the Woodridge Park District organized a focus group to gauge community interest and surveyed residents.

“We really wanted a quality building that our community can be proud of,” Adams said.

The building features high-energy efficient building solutions, such as LED lighting, to minimize operational costs and protect the environment and a strategic design layout to promote both building and patron safety.

But the facility’s location and accessibility to the pubic is equally impressive, Adams said.

“Now we have this recreational corridor up and down Janes Avenue,” he said.

Located just north is the ARC Soccer Field and Janes Avenue Park. To the south, there is Cypress

Cove Family Aquatic Park, Orchard Hill Sports Field Complex and Falcon Ridge Park.

“We intentionally located the facility within the neighborhoods,” Adams said. “A lot of times, these buildings are [not as accessible].

We wanted to make sure it was easily accessible to residents at 8201 S. Janes Ave. It really is the geographic center of Woodridge.”

Adams said residents overwhelmingly appear to enjoy the new opportunities made possible

thanks to the ARC. “The very first day we opened, it was packed,” he said. “We had a soccer tournament. Memberships for fitness were growing.”

Previously, the Woodridge Park District used area school gymnasiums and a small group exercise room within the existing community center. Fitness memberships and rental information were not available.

To date, there are more than 1,600 new fitness memberships.

Park District officials set a 1,750 goal for memberships they should seek to obtain during the current fiscal year; they expect to surpass it.

“That’s a very strong membership when we just opened the facility,” Adams said.

The ARC’s construction was substantially complete as of Dec. 1, 2016.

There is a scheduled addition of the phase II multi-activity court gym set for winter 2018, at which time the total project’s square footage will amount to 83,874.

Board renews superintendent’s contract Cremascoli has served as District 58’s superintendent since July 2012 The Downers Grove Grade School District 58 Board of Education voted during a regular meeting Monday, Jan. 9 to renew Superintendent Dr. Kari Cremascoli’s contract for an additional three years, beginning July 1, 2017 through June 30, 2020.

All Board members present at the meeting unanimously voted to renew this contract.

“Under Dr. Cremascoli’s leadership, District 58 has moved forward and achieved many accomplishments,” said Board President John Cooper. “We’ve kept a balanced budget while increasing certified staff positions, we’ve made important safety and facility updates, and we’ve expanded our instructional programs, technology services, and teacher professional development opportunities. We still have a lot of progress to make, but the District 58 Board of Edu-

DISTRICT 99 EDUCATION FOUNDATION

Pizza Wars nets foundation $15K Over 700 guests and raised over $15,000 to support District 99 students

Pizza Wars 2017 was a huge success. Hosted by the District 99 Education Foundation and held at South High School in Downers Grove, the fundraising event served over 700 guests and raised over $15,000 to support District 99 students by providing innovative teacher grants and student scholarships.

This year, the event recognized three winners: Best Crust – Olive Theory Pizzeria, Best Sauce – Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria and Best Overall – Tortorice’s Pizza!.

The voting for all categories was very close, which proves that all of the participants have outstanding pizza.

In total, ten pizza vendors donated an estimated 500 pizzas and provided 30 staff to serve over

700 guests within two hours. “The District 99 community should become patrons of Pizza Wars vendors, if they aren’t already,” stated Martha Merilos, Pizza Wars Chairperson and District 99 Education Foundation Board Member.

“Since these pizza places support our students, we should support them.”

In addition to pizza, this year Pizza Wars held a raffle with over 20 gift baskets to choose from.

Goodies were provided by District 99 Foundation Board Members and a host of local retail stores and restaurants.

Split the pot made someone $205.00 richer. The violin music, played by South High student Michael Beube, added to the festive atmosphere.

“We cannot forget our generous sponsors,” stated Denise Callarman, Executive Director of the Foundation. “Because of them, ticket prices remained very reasonable.” Three top level sponsors, donating $1,000.00 each, were Tim’s Professional Painting, Inc., Wight & Company and ortho-

pedist Dr. Lawrence Lieber.

Event is geared for parents with children who will enter kindergarten in August Downers Grove Grade School District 58 invites parents to attend a Kindergarten Readiness Night on Monday, Feb. 6 from 6-7 p.m. at Henry Puffer School, 2220 Haddow Ave. Hosted by the District’s Grove Children’s Preschool, this event is geared for parents with children who will enter kindergarten in August. No registration is required to attend.

The meeting will feature a Q&A session with Indian Trail School Principal Robin Bruebach and Henry Puffer School Kindergarten

Teacher Carrie Murphy. The two will share information on the District’s kindergarten programming and expectations. District 58 provides a traditional half-day kindergarten program in the morning, which covers the entire kindergarten curriculum. In the afternoon, the District offers the fee-based Optional Kindergarten Enrichment and Enhancement Program, or OKEEP, which gives students additional academic enrichment and exploration. This presentation will discuss both the morning kindergarten program and the afternoon OKEEP experience.

The Kindergarten Readiness Night will also cover kindergarten learning standards, as well as ways parents can prepare their child for kindergarten.

Please note, child care will not be

provided at this event. The District asks that only parents attend this presentation.

Parents of incoming District 58 kindergartners will also have the opportunity to visit their school, meet the principal and staff, and ask questions during the upcoming Kindergarten Roundup events this March and April. Parents whose children will be five years old on or before Sept. 1, 2017 are encouraged to call their neighborhood elementary school prior to the Kindergarten Roundup for information about registration.

The Kindergarten Roundup schedule will be published in early February.

Fundraiser to help woman’s cancer battle In July 2016, a few days before her 18th birthday, Stephanie (Stevie) Anderson, of Woodridge and a Downers North graduate, was diagnosed with stage IV Osteosarcoma bone cancer.

From July through October, she underwent two five-week cycles of chemotherapy that helped shrink the tumors in her pelvis and lungs. She is currently working with an alternative doctor who is using holistic approach to reverse the cancer. She says feels goods and is praying for positive results on her next set of scans.

Stevie wants to have a normal life and cannot wait to enroll in college classes. She wants to continue working at her part time job, also. She is interested in eventually working in the medical field as pharmacist or some other type of role in which she can help other cancer patients.

“Fighting Cancer with Beauty and Grace” is the theme for the fundraiser Dancing with Stevie, a fundraiser to help raise money for medical expenses related to Stevie’s ongoing treatment.

“I formed Dancing with Stevie

because I saw a great opportunity for our local communities to come together and help one of our neighbor families. After growing up in the Woodridge and Downers Grove area and raising our children here, I know how fortunate we all are to have such a caring community,” said Kim Simpson, fundraiser coordinator. “We have the gift of time, meals and an opportunity to have a night out together, buy a raffle ticket, a t-shirt or simply make a donation. Together we can make a difference for the Anderson family.”

Athletes ready to bring message to Winter Games More than 2,600 athletes to compete at the 2017 World Winter Games for Special Olympics in Austria

As of Feb. 1, there are 41 days remaining until more than 2,600 athletes compete at the 2017 World Winter Games for Special Olympics in Austria. Among them, our national team, Special Olympics USA, will send a 210-member delegation to represent the United States at the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games on March 14-25, in Graz, Ramsau, Schladming, and Styria, Austria.

Among them is my friend and fellow Special Olympics athlete Jamiah Shepard, of South Holland. Jamiah will compete in snowshoeing on Special Olympics USA. Jamiah was diagnosed with an intellectual disability at an early age and does not let any of her challenges get in the way of her accomplishments including receiving a Sportsmanship award at Thornwood High School, being a three-time state basketball champion, and competing in the pentathlon for the first time at Illinois’ 2016 Summer Games. In all, Jamiah has competed in pentathlon, track and field, basketball, snowshoe, gymnastics, cheerleading, and bocce.

Jamiah’s favorite part of competing in Special Olympics is, “getting a gold and having good competition against somebody,” said Jamiah.

Local Special Olympics staff had their eyes on Jamiah at a recent state Winter Games held in Galena. A year ago, they selected Jamiah to run for Special Olympics USA at the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria.

Jamiah is joined by 149 other athletes on Special Olympics USA. Our national delegation includes traditional Special Olympics athletes and also Special Olympics Unified Sports teams, where people with and without intellectual disabilities train and compete together, as teammates.

Biannually, athletes go beyond geographic boundaries, nationality, gender, age, culture, religion, and political philosophy to come together for the flagship event of the Special Olympics movement: the Special Olympics World Games. This event brings a much-

By Daniel Smrokowski needed message to our communities: a message of equality; a message of tolerance; and, a message of acceptance around the globe. About 15 years ago when I began competing in Special Olympics, my mom, Linda Smrokowski, 65, attended her first Special Olympics event. It was at this moment that she perfectly stated the effect of the Special Olympics movement.

“If the whole world were like Special Olympics, then there would be no wars,” said my mom. “The movement brings out the best in everybody.”

According to the press release from Special Olympics USA that was released two weeks ago, this is expected to be the largest Special Olympics World Winter Games in history. An estimated 2,600 athletes from 106 nations will be competing in Austria in 9 Olympic-type sports at these 2017 Special Olympics World Games: floor hockey, stick shooting, figure skating, speed skating, alpine skiing, snowboarding, nordic skiing, and snowshoeing.

ESPN, the global television network and digital media organization, is to produce extensive coverage for sport fans and supporters of the Special Olympics movement around the globe. This coverage is said to be the first-ever coverage for a World Winter Games event. As the official broadcaster of Special Olympics, the television coverage can be seen on ESPN’s television networks in the U.S. and streamed through WatchESPN and on the ESPN App. While at the training camp in Vermont for Special Olympics USA, ESPN had their eyes on the amazing athletes who were preparing for the once-in-alifetime opportunity.

“They [ESPN] were stalking me for Vermont,” said Jamiah. ESPN reporters were interviewing a few of the athletes who will be featured as part of the comprehensive coverage in Austria.

Jamiah is not sure if she will be featured on ESPN as the large sports television media network will select the featured

athletes once they arrive in Austria on March 12.

There are only a couple hundred Special Olympics athletes, like Jamiah, who have the opportunity to represent the United States at a Special Olympics World Winter Games. This is a unique honor to both represent our country with one’s athletic abilities and to demonstrate one’s joy to the world.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for these athletes to demonstrate their athletic abilities, competing at the highest level on the world stage, and to have life and cultural experiences that will stay with them for the rest of their lives,” said Chris Hahn, Head of Delegation for Special Olympics USA, in a press release statement. “I encourage every American to cheer on these inspiring athletes, to share in their triumphs and to take pride in knowing that they will represent our country with excellence and honor.”

Jamiah is most looking forward to competing against other people from the 106 countries. Admitting the excitement of competing at the World Games, she is also a little bit scared of this opportunity.

“I’m also doing a 400 but I’m kinda scared about doing the 400 because it’s a longer event and I’m not used to doing a 400,” said Jamiah. “But I’m going to try and do it.” Jamiah added that she likes to try new things.

Americans watching the upcoming Special Olympics 2017 World Winter Games at home can be part of a terrific fan club mission. According to online literature from Special Olympics World Winter Games Austria 2017, “Mission 3000” has launched to become the great fan club mission of all time. This fan club mission gives you an opportunity to support an athlete before and during the World Games.

Then you can sign up to become a “Fan Club.” Once you sign up, you will get in touch with an athlete and write letters, record video messages, send pictures and introduce the athlete to the culture and tradition of your country.

Similarly to the 2015 World Summer Games, Coca-cola launched for the first time a unified song. This is a song that was recorded by artists with and without intellectual disabilities.

Trailing Proviso East 52-41 with 4:21 left in their 2017 Downers Grove South Hall of Fame Game, things looked bleak for the host Mustangs and their loyal fans.

The guests from Proviso East, had totally erased a 34-22 Mustang third-quarter lead.

Turning up the defensive pressure, the Pirates forced 16 Mustang turnovers and went on a 30-7 run, over the previous 11 minutes.

Worry. Not the Mustangs.

Mustang senior Darnell Wallace (12 points. 10 rebounds) would score inside at the 3:52 mark, for a 52-43 Pirate lead. Senior Denis Alibegovic (23 points, 7 three-pointers) would bury his seventh longrange bomb, bringing the ‘Stangs within six at 52-46. With 2:30 left, Tyree Spencer (10 points, 2 steals) would score inside on a perfect assist from Alibegovic. 52-48 Pirates.

Redwings get senior night win over DGS

The six seniors on the Benet girls basketball team have been a part of something very special throughout their high school career.

Part of back-to-back state championships, that group got to add another moment to their memory bank when they were honored Jan. 24 for Senior Night before a non-conference matchup with Downers Grove South.

The Redwings - led by the senior class of Ali Kramer, Kate Heiberger, Emma Lyne, Kendal Schramek, Jennifer Degnan and Katie Jaseckas - then went out and capped off the occasion by capturing their 20th win of the season with a 5343 decision over the Mustangs.

The squad also defeated Carmel

59-49 a day later.

“I was very happy that we were able to give the six seniors the entire first quarter,” said Benet coach Joe Kilbride. “It’s a really good group of kids. They are high character people which is huge. Yes you have to have talent and you have to work hard. But my conclusion after a couple of years is to be an excellent team and program, you have to have high character kids.”

Jaseckas led all players with 22 points while adding 10 rebounds.

But not surprisingly, the senior post player was more interested in talking about her less heralded classmates, including Degnan, a usual non-starter who totaled two points and six rebounds in the first half.

“A few of them don’t get as much credit as they should,” Jaseckas

said. “They push us hard every day in practice. It was great to remind them that they are an important part of this team.”

Ten different players scored for the Redwings, who again reached the 20-win plateau (with only three losses) despite losing an outstanding senior class from a year ago.

“I think a lot of people didn’t have high expectations for us this year,” Jaseckas said. “Especially without Kathleen (Doyle) and Elise (Stout) and some of the other great seniors. But so many people have stepped up, like Tsimba (Malonga), who had made a major impact. And that includes ever girl on the bench, they push us in practice.”

“This was a big win for us tonight,” Alibegovic said. “We really played hard to get the victory. I came out hot in the first quarter and my teammates set me up with good looks. I just kept knocking my shots down all night. It felt great.”

DGS grad Gentile making waves at NCC

The power of brotherhood is strong with North Central College men’s swimmer Luke Gentile and his older brother Jason.

Throughout Gentile’s life, he has always looked up to Jason who is 3 years older than Luke, who would be the first to admit that he would be a totally different person if it weren’t for their relationship.

Without Jason “I wouldn’t have even started swimming,” Luke explained, “[he was] one of the main reasons I joined swimming because he was on it.” This relationship between brothers is still prevalent today as his brother attends most of Gentile’s swim meets.

Gentile first started competitively swimming as a member of the Wheaton Swim Club. His brother was already an established member of the team and Gentile wanted to follow in his brother’s footsteps. It was here that Gentile was able to really hone and develop his swimming abilities.

As a swimmer, Gentile gives

credit to his brother for not only starting swimming but his improvement as well. This was how his times improved once he started working hard and training.

Luke respected this and knew he wanted to do the same when his time came.

Luke explains, “[Jason] had plenty of opportunities to quit, there were so many people in his grade who didn’t do club, who were just there for the social aspect.” Though, Gentile could see that his brother was there for more than just the social aspect and he admired that.

The bond between these brothers makes Gentile want to continue swimming and improve on a daily basis. A defining moment in both of the Gentile brothers swimming careers was Jason’s decision to join the club team in the first place.

Gentile explains, “freshman and sophomore year he [Jason] had no experience so he wasn’t good. Then he did club and his junior year he was a different swimmer.” Gentile commends his brother for sticking with it and joining club and working on his individual swimming ability,

After seeing how much of an improvement his brother had made by putting in the extra time and effort, Gentile came to the conclusion that he could do the same. “I saw how that much change could happen, that’s what made me think, okay I do this, I can get better and I did,” he says.

Gentile who didn’t even know how to dive his freshman year of high school has now gone on to swim at the collegiate level. He now owns the team’s best times in the 50 and 100 yard breaststroke events for this season.

Mark Schmitt, the North Central College head men’s swim coach also gave Luke a different perspective on improving as a swimmer. “Every coach I’ve had before Mark, focused on distance whereas Mark gave me more sprint sets,” Gentile continues “that made me change how I swim.”

Though, Gentile’s road to success was hindered by some adversity. As a senior in high school, Gentile had some injuries that were tough to overcome.

He dealt with tendonitis in his left shoulder as well as rhabdomyolysis in both biceps in which

he remembers, “couldn’t move them. It felt like they were stuck against his body outward at a 90-degree angle, and it hurt a lot.”

Though, he found the silver lining with his injuries and decided to pursue a career with North Central. In his mind, continuing to swim and improve would make his brother proud and prove to himself that he was better than all of his setbacks. “It was a bit of redemption because my senior year of high school was pretty injury ridden and I didn’t want to end on that.”

Further, Gentile wanted to come to North Central because of the opportunity to study exercise science.

He hopes to go to graduate school at Midwestern after his four years at North Central. After that he hopes to become a physical therapist in either the sports world or as an outpatient with companies like Athletico. Gentile has already put his plan into motion observing with Athletico.

Gentile’s passion for physical therapy comes from seeing himself and his brother sidelined by injuries that required therapy

and seeing the results of that healing process.

When he dealt with his shoulder injury, he went to see a physical therapist and could see the impact it was having on his body.

“Everyday, I was just slowly getting better, less pain each time I went,” he recalls.

When he isn’t in the pool or studying, Gentile can be found playing ultimate Frisbee with his friends or in his dorm playing video games such as Mario, Zelda and Overwatch. He also played volleyball and water polo at different times in his life.

Gentile would like to see the swim team grow and has stepped into a leadership position on the team to make this a reality.

He has talked to high schoolers from around his hometown of Downers Grove to try give them information on how they can further their swimming careers with North Central. He hopes to go to finals in at least one event in his career here at North Central.

Gentile continues to work towards that goal by competing in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Swimming Championships on Feb 9.

Insurance guy not a financial advisor Get away from the guy who gave you this advice, and find a good financial advisor DEAR DAVE, My husband was recently laid off, and he has $229,000 in a 401(k). He has been told that he should roll it into a hybrid annuity. Is this a good idea?

DURNAE DEAR DURNAE, Absolutely not! It sounds to me like he’s been talking to an insurance agent instead of an investment advisor. There’s no reason to put a 401(k) into an annuity. Annuities are there to protect money, as it grows, from taxes.

Well, guess what? The 401(k) is already protecting it from taxes.

I would roll it into a traditional IRA in a series of growth stock mutual funds. You’ll have half the fees, the advisor won’t make any-

where near the commission he’d make on an annuity, and you’ll get much better results in the end.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn’t go the annuity route. I don’t have a single annuity, and I’ve got a lot of investments. One of the reasons so many “advisors” push annuities is because they wind up with bigger commissions. Annuities aren’t evil or anything, but they’re definitely not the proper product for you in this situation.

Get away from the guy who gave you this advice, and find a good financial advisor — not an insurance guy — with the heart

CHRIS DEAR CHRIS, I’m really sorry to hear you’re facing this. You’re a smart, brave young woman to be looking ahead and making plans for the coming years.

I suggest you read a book by Dan Miller called “48 Days to Creative Income.” Dan is a friend of mine, and he also wrote a popular book titled “48 Days to the Work You Love.” The issue you’re talking about is very close to his heart, and I think his books will be a great help to you.

There’s also a book by Richard Bolles. It’s called “Job Hunting for the So-Called Handicapped or People Who Have Disabilities,” and it’s full of ideas to help you work around the issues you’ll be facing.

There are lots of people out there — well-known, highly successful folks — who have disabilities and still make good money and have rewarding lives using the principles found in these books. Another great piece of news is it sounds like you have a wonderful support system around you.
