Invitational gives musicians experience Area middle school bands get to learn outside of classroom during festival

The sound of music recently rang throughout the hallways at Lakeview Junior High School.

Center Cass School District 66 and Lakeview Junior High School hosted its 18th annual Center Cass District 66 Winter Invitational Saturday, Dec. 2.

The event was designed to create a learning opportunity outside of the classroom for music students in and around the Downers Grove area. Many of the participating school bands have not yet performed in holiday concerts in front of their communities.

“I also felt that there was a need for younger groups—and it was designed for younger groups, although we have a wide range of groups anywhere from kids in their second year of playing to kids in their third, fourth, or fifth year of playing—a need for them to have an experience that would allow

them to get feedback from professionals on how they can perform as a group,” said Tom Tedeschi, band director for Center Cass School District 66. “It’s adjudicated by two clinicians, but there’s no placement. It’s really more for the educational aspect of it, in terms of giving the director and giving the students feedback on their performance level, what they can do to improve that, things that they’re doing well, how they can make those [bands] even better.”

This year, the Winter Invitational brought in 15 bands with students representing the Woodridge School District 68 second-year band, Herrick Middle School concert band, Indian Trail Junior High School sixth-grade band and Gower Middle School symphonic band.

Dozens were on hand watching on as students set out to showcase their skills and musicianship.

“For some groups, this is one of their premiere things that they do every year, so they come to this festival,” Tedeschi said. “I know some

schools don’t do a lot of things, but the schools that have been coming really like the format of the festival for their kids.”

Not all schools are equally active in providing opportunities for students to participate in parades, festivals or competitions.

“Here, in District 66, we do a little bit more of that,” Tedeschi said.

“I will take my group out to other festivals in the spring, we audition for various events throughout the

Midwest. We are a bit more active in that aspect of it.”

Between each school band performance, two clinicians, Glenn Williams and Victor Anderson, provided feedback and suggestions and worked with the students through select portions of the music they had learned.

“Having other people listen and critique your group is always good, and it always brings out better ideas, more ideas, or reinforce-

ment of ideas that maybe their director is doing,” Tedeschi said.

The premise of the Winter Invitational rings true for many.

“I see that growth with my own kids,” Tedeschi said.

Moving forward, students in Center Cass School District 66 have some community band performances to look forward to in the coming days, festivals and performances in the spring, and auditions for a statewide festival.

Man accused of stealing from school Bond set at $50,000 for man accused of stealing from special education school DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Lisle Chief of Police David Anderson announced Dec. 1 that bond has been set for a Chicago man accused of stealing from a Lisle special education school on two occasions.

Kenan Bektasevic, 29, appeared in bond court last week where Judge Joseph Bugos set bond at $50,000.

Bektasevic worked as a cleaning man for a company that is contracted to clean Giant Steps, a day school and therapy institution for children and adults with autism and mental disabilities. It is alleged that on October 8, Bektasevic was scheduled to clean Giant Steps but instead called in sick.

It is alleged that Bektasevic then went to Giant Steps that same day, used his key card to gain access to the building and once inside, stole a vacuum and an envelope of cash. It is further alleged that on November 4, Bektasevic, wearing a facemask, went to Giant Steps, accessed the building with his key card and once inside stole a safe containing approximately $3,500.

An investigation led by the Lisle Police Department led to Bektasevic.

“The very idea that someone would steal from an institution that works to improve the quality of life for those with disabilities is extremely disheartening,” Berlin said. “I would like to thank the Lisle Police Department for

their work in identifying and apprehending the defendant in this case. I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Jim French and Claudia Fantauzzo for their efforts.”

“I would like to thank our detectives as well as the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office for their collaborative efforts that led to charging the defendant in this case,” Anderson said.

Bektasevic’s next court appearance is scheduled for December 12 in front of Judge John Kinsella.

In all he is charged with two counts of Burglary, a Class 2 Felony.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Woodridge Police release Thanksgiving campaign results

The Woodridge Police Department conducted seat belt enforcement from November 17-27, reminding motorists to buckle up and not drive impaired, day or night, as part of the nationwide Click It or Ticket mobilization.

The Woodridge Police joined other state and local law enforcement agencies across Illinois to reduce highway fatalities by issuing citations to unbuckled motorists and arresting impaired drivers.

“Our officers are out yearround. If you or your passengers, front or back, are caught not wearing a seat belt, you will be cited for the violation,” says Deputy Chief Tom Stefanson.

The Click It or Ticket mobilization was made possible with federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Newspapers to commemorate Illinois’ bicentennial

BY DENNIS ANDERSON Illinois turned 200 on Dec. 3, 2018, and over the course of the next year Bugle/Enterprise Newspapers is helping to commemorate the event.

The Bugle/Enterprise Newspapers and dozens of publications throughout Illinois will print a weekly series of articles featuring key moments, figures, industries and events that help to make Illinois unique. Some of the first articles include the Underground Railroad, coal mining, the dueling Peoria territory and top Illinois athletes through the years.

Other topics include Illinois’ role in the Civil War, World War I and World War II; transportation, from the railroads to the interstates to aerospace; and the arts, including jazz and the blues.

BY TRAVIS LOTT of the County Journal No exploration of the 200 years of Illinois history would be complete without a look at what preceded those two centuries.

While Illinois became a state in 1818, its story began nearly 150 years before that, in 1673, when Louis Joliet and Jacques Marquette explored the Mississippi River in search of a route to the Pacific Ocean.

When the two explorers’ travels led them near hostile Spanish territories, they turned back and traveled along the Illinois River, finding safety among the Kaskaskia Indian tribe. Marquette founded the Mission of the Immaculate Conception, but left the mission in the

The mission had to be moved several times due to conflicts between the Kaskaskia, Illini Confederation and the Iroquois.

Eventually, the mission planted roots at the confluence of the Mississippi River and the Michigamea River, which is now known as the Kaskaskia River.

The village of Kaskaskia was established in 1703, and was mainly inhabited by French traders and their wives.

The village’s fertile ground in the American Bottoms, along with its positioning at the confluence of two rivers, led it to be a hub of agriculture and trading. It also became a focal point for warring British and French during the French and Indian War. In 1756, fearing attack, the townspeople built Fort Kaskaskia on a hill overlooking the town. The fort was then destroyed by the townspeople who feared it would fall into British control after the French lost the war.

Those who did not want to live under the impending British rule moved to St. Louis or Ste. Genevieve, Missouri.

The town fell to the British and was kept under control of the crown until July 4, 1778, when George Rogers Clark led an expedition of American troops into the village to liberate it. After a two-month

journey over 1,000 miles, Clark and his 175 men arrived in Kaskaskia to take the area. Many of the British had been withdrawn from the area, and Clark captured the settlement without a shot being fired.

With Clark in town, residents rang the Liberty Bell of the West, which got its name that day. The bell was originally given to the Catholic Church of the Illinois Country by King Louis XV of France. The bell was cast in France in 1741, making it 11 years older than the Liberty Bell that sits in Philadelphia.

An inscription on the side of the bell reads “Pour Leglise des Illinois par les Soins du Roi D’outre,” which translates to “for the Church of the Illinois, by gift of the King across the water.”

One side of the bell is ornamented with the royal lilies of France. The other side bears a cross and pedestal, with the top and arms of the cross terminating in grouped fleur de lis.

Taking Kaskaskia was the first step in Clark’s plan to capture the western headquarters of the British at Detroit.

The bell is now a tourist attraction, much like the Immaculate Conception Church that sits next door.

Benet looking to compete for state title; DGS has sights set on conference championship

Expectations are high as they always are for the Benet girls basketball team, which has the talent to contend for its third state championship in the past four seasons.

Downers Grove South, on the other hand, has more modest goals, among them winning the West Suburban Conference Gold Division title.

But neither squad expected to play like they did Wednesday night.

Benet struggled shooting the ball and needed several big plays from sophomore star Brooke Schramek to eke out a 51-46 victory over the host Mustangs.

Schramek scored eight of her 14 points and had four of her six steals in the fourth quarter as the Redwings (6-1) overcame 29 percent shooting and a lackluster defensive effort with a clos-

ing 7-2 run.

“Honestly, I don’t think we’re playing like ourselves,” Schramek said. “We talked about that at practice, that we need to pick up our energy.

“It’s been kind of no energy.

‘Low juice’ is what we call it and I think that’s kind of affecting our game. But at halftime we had a talk and third quarter we kind of switched it up and then fourth quarter we really came at them and that’s what really changed the game.”

The Mustangs (2-3) led by three points early in the fourth quarter before Schramek scored four points off consecutive steals.

Downers South retook the lead on an inside hoop from senior center Jennifer Masello, who later scored consecutive baskets to tie the game at 44-44.

Cardinals earn win in CCIW opener The North Central College men’s basketball team earned a prosperous living in the freethrow lane in Saturday’s College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) opener, overpowering the North Park University Vikings in an 88-71 victory at the North Park Gym. The Cardinals (3-2, 1-0 CCIW) shot a season-high 58.6 percent (34 of 58) from the floor, including a 62.1 percent clip (18 of 29) in the second half and owned a 50-18 advantage in points scored in the paint Saturday, leading for all but 14 seconds of the 40-minute contest.

After surrendering the game’s opening basket, North Central scored eight of the next 10 points and never trailed again.

The visitors led by at least 13 points for the final 6:09 of the game.

Raridon finished with 26 points on 9 of 13 shooting while also contributing six rebounds and a game-high seven assists.

Alex Sorenson put up 22 points and tied a career high with 15 rebounds, while Henry totaled 18 points and five assists.

Lake led all scorers with 28 points for North Park.

A game earlier in Hawaii, North Central cruised to victory in the Hoops in Hawaii Classic Saturday evening, defeating Lewis & Clark College (Oregon), 83-53, at Moanalua High School.

The Cardinals (2-2) extended an eight-point halftime lead to 27 after a 25-6 run midway through the second period, shooting 57.9 percent from the floor (63.0 percent after halftime) and owning a 42-22 rebounding advantage.

North Central scored the game’s first five points on an inside basket by Alex Sorenson and a three-pointer by Erwin Henry in the opening minute, leading by as many as 16 points before the Pioneers (1-3) closed the first half with a 12-4 run.

The Cardinals went into the break with a 40-32 advantage, led by Sorenson’s 15 points and seven rebounds.

Henry knocked down a jumper on North Central’s first possession of the second half, and the Cardinals followed soon after with fast-break layups by Henry

and Connor Raridon following blocked shots by Sorenson and Aiden Chang. Owning a 48-40 advantage with 15:13 to play, North Central finally put the game away for good with an 11-0 run which included two layups from Henry and a three-pointer from Mike Pollack on the fast break.

The lead extended to 73-46 with 4:20 to play before the starters left the game.

Sorenson finished with game highs of 17 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots, while Henry totaled 13 points and Pollack handed out seven assists.

But for all the talent the Redwings have, they have yet to click on all cylinders.

“Last year we had so much energy the whole entire year,” Schramek said. “I don’t know what’s happening this year but all I know is that we’re going to change it because none of us are happy.”

Neither is Benet coach Joe Kilbride.

“We just didn’t have the kind of juice we’re going to need,” Kilbride said. “We’re talented enough and you saw it at the

end when they flipped a switch.

“Brooke made some big plays, Holmes made some big plays.

I’m trying to convince them we need to play like that from the beginning instead of waiting until the end.”

The Mustangs, in contrast, played hard from the outset, gaining confidence even after Benet took a 26-20 halftime lead.

They outscored the Redwings 14-5 in the third quarter and got huge performances from the 6-1 Masello and 6-0 junior forward Holly Lueken.

Masello scored a game-high 16 points and had a careerhigh 21 rebounds, while Lueken added 15 points and seven rebounds.

“These past two practices we’ve been really focused on picking up our intensity because we know they are a phe-

nomenal team,” Masello said.

“We were focusing on bringing the intensity and what we can do instead of focusing on what they are going to do.”

Ultimately, Benet’s press forced the Mustangs into 12 turnovers in the fourth quarter, but even in defeat the Mustangs were happy.

“There’s no negatives to be said when you compete that well with a state-ranked team that you know is going to be amazing every single year,” Downers South coach Lyndsie Long said. “I went into the game saying it’s early in the season for both of us. All we can do is play hard, play together and things will come together.

“The thing with this team is our team chemistry is outstanding from the first player to the 14th player. Everyone cheers each other on and I think that’s the big difference from last year to this year.”

The Mustangs surprisingly won the battle of the boards 41-32, with Masello and Lueken

dominating and guard Maggie Greco pulling down seven rebounds.

“That was a big key for our game tonight was rebounding,” Masello said. “I think that’s going to help us to be successful in the future because Holly and I have got to be rebounding.

“We’re going to play against some really good posts so I think that’s really going to help boost our confidence. It was a great performance for us tonight.”

The Mustangs don’t have the high-profile recruits that Benet has but they figure to be competitive. Lueken is getting Division I looks but Masello, who will play soccer at Augsburg University, could be the linchpin.

“Jen played an outstanding game,” Long said. “She was in beast mode for sure today.

“For being her senior year I obviously think she wanted to take it to them. I told them after the game there’s no reason we shouldn’t compete in every game if we play like we just did.”

We’re in the middle of Baby Step 2, so we’re working to pay off everything but our house using the debt snowball. We only bring home about $40,000 a year combined right now, so how should we handle Christmas budgeting in the middle of working our debt snowball?

DEAR SCOT, Working to get out of debt can cause stress within a relationship.

That stress is sometimes magnified if you’re serious about getting out of debt during the holidays.

I’m glad you two are on the same page where your finances are concerned. The fact that you’re com-

mitted to becoming debt-free as a couple will go a long way toward ensuring a merrier Christmas.

Just sit down together, have a look at your budget, and ask what she thinks is a reasonable amount to spend on gifts and things while you’re trying to get out of debt. If you think her suggestion is a manageable figure, just give her a hug, tell her you agree, and move on. If you’ve been trying to get out of debt for a while, you might even propose using last year’s Christmas budget.

The important thing is to make sure you listen to each other, and approach this together. On the off chance one of you wants to spend what the other considers to be too much, talk about how and why you arrived at that figure. Then, using your budget as a guide, gently and

lovingly talk things out.

Honestly, I don’t think you’re going have problems if you’ve already been working together to get your finances in order. And remember, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to make people happy.
