Downers Grove Library celebrates 125th anniversary

Downers Grove school district opened singleoccupancy, gender-neutral bathrooms at each of its two high schools, as well as heard a proposal to add private dressing stalls in the girls and boys locker rooms.

For 125 years, the Downers Grove Public Library provided residents with entertainment, information and inspiration.

“As is the ongoing practice at District 99, we are always seeking ways to better accommodate the needs of all of our students,” Director of Communications Jill Browning said. “As a result, facility changes are being recommended that we believe will benefit all students.”

To commemorate a mission that started with the Ladies Library Association in 1891, the library is planning a yearlong celebration – complete with activities and events designed to honor their legacy.

Around the country, school districts have begun installing gender-neutral restrooms and locker rooms in an effort to preempt issues related to transgender students’ access to these facilities. Recently, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights found Township High School District 211 in nearby Palatine in violation of Title IX.

“We’re celebrating this milestone all year long, with a variety of historic portrayals, gallery displays, activities, musical performances, story times, trivia and even a birthday party in the fall,” said Melissa Doornbos, public relations manager for the library.

Village commissioner sworn in as new College of DuPage trustee David Olsen, commissioner on the Downers Grove village council, was sworn in by the Judge Liam C. Brennan at the College of DuPage Board of Trustees Feb. 19 meeting. Olsen, 27, will serve as the seventh trustee on the board until the next consolidated election, scheduled for April 2017.

Elected to the Downers Grove Village Council in 2013, Olsen has served as commissioner and was named mayor pro tem last year. He is currently an ethics and compliance analyst for commodities trading company BP Corporation North America, Inc.

Woodridge Library unveils new look The Woodridge Public Library will have a fresh look when it celebrates its golden anniversary in 2017, following the recent completion of a $2 million building renovation.

On Jan. 31, 2016 library staff invited the community to attend an open house to introduce patrons to the new and improved building, which includes a completely remodeled children’s library and new teen and adult spaces.

Then Library Administrator Susan McNeil-Marshall said the most recent renovation is the sixth time the library has received a makeover in its nearly 50-year history.

That timeline began in the basement of an old house on the south side of 75th Street, and McNeil-Marshall said patrons still reminisce about the library’s early days.

The initial portion of the current building was constructed in 1977 and the remainder was built 20 years later in 1997. McNeil-Marshall, who retired in the spring of 2016, said she is proud to oversee a library that has kept pace with a growing community.

“All the changes that have been made to the library over the whole 50 year period have been because the village has changed,” she said. “Everything you see in all of these iterations of the building have been the result of the library and the library board over the years responding to the needs of the village.”

Additionally, the library is expected to approve a second phase of the renovation sometime in 2017.

At North High, the restroom is located on the first floor, across from the College and Career Center and adjacent to building administration offices. At South High, the restroom is located on the third floor, adjacent to a staff lounge. Browning said the restrooms will be open to male or female students, as well as staff members.

Downers Grove Library director retires after 42 years Janice Schwarze named principal of Downers North Associate principal Janice Schwarze will take over as the next principal of Downers Grove North High School in 2017, and the long-time District 99 administrator couldn’t be happier.

“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity and privilege to serve North High’s students as their principal next year,” Schwarze said in a news release announcing the appointment. “I look forward to working with everyone in this supportive and close community.”

The District 99 Board of Education approved the appointment during its Feb. 22 business meeting.

Officials also appointed Karen Taylor as the next associate principal of students and staff at Downers Grove South High School during the meeting.

Schwarze, who has been with the district since 2007, will replace current principal Scott Kasik, who has held the position for the last five years. The 37-year educator endorsed his successor, saying she is more than qualified for the job. “Janice is knowledgeable, energetic and most importantly, cares about every student,” Kasik said. “I respect her abilities and passion to help students succeed, and know she’ll make a fine leader.”

District 99 installs genderneutral, private bathrooms

When Rick Ashton said farewell to the Downers Grove Public Library March 31, the long-time library administrator plans to travel and, of course, read plenty of books.

Ashton, 70, announced in November 2015 that he would retire from his position as library director at the end of March. With his last day approaching, it hardly comes as a surprise that a man who has dedicated more than four decades to public libraries has books on the brain.

“I have a few travel destinations in mind that my wife and I have been discussing, and I have lots of books I’ve been planning to read all these years,” joked Ashton, who will also spend time with his grandchildren and volunteering at his Oak Park church.

Ashton began working in libraries in 1974, and he has seen a lot change during his 42 years on the job. Back then, coinoperated copy machines were considered an innovation and computers were the size of a house, Ashton recalled. Even paperback books were quite rare in libraries.

Despite the ongoing evolution of publishing and library technology, Ashton said libraries have still maintained a high degree of continuity. When he was hired as library director in September 2011, Ashton had this in mind. He led the Downers Grove Library through a major building renovation and modernization effort, while also taking steps to preserve its historic connections to the community.

By far, the largest item on that list was a $2.4 million building renovation that included additional study space, a cafe and enhanced displays.

The former director joined the Woodridge Library staff in 2002 as the head of the adult reference department.

In June 2007, she was appointed to interim library director.

Marshall was hired as the permanent director six months later, and she immediately set out to improve the library’s offerings and communicate the importance of the library as an intellectual center.

Marshall announced her plans to retire in fall 2015, setting March 31 as the final day in a public library career that spanned more than 40 years.

This week, the Blues Foundation will induct former Westmont resident Eddy Clearwater into the Blues Hall of Fame, making him the second inductee to have once called the Chicago suburb home.

Fire crews contain massive blaze in Woodridge

Influenced by blues great Muddy Waters, Clearwater will be one of five legendary performers inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame May 4.

More than 30 southwest suburban fire departments were called on to help contain a massive fire at a Woodridge furniture warehouse April 21.

Westmont Mariano’s is 36th Chicago-area location

Remarkably, no one was injured in the blaze, which quickly consumed a 700,000-square-foot building at 2500 Internationale Parkway. Smoke from the fire could be seen as far away as Plainfield.

Residents in and around Westmont now have a new option to consider when deciding where to grab their groceries.

“Fire fighters from about 35 departments from the surrounding areas responded to help contain the fire,” said Lemont Fire Protection District Chief George Rimbo, whose district oversaw the effort. “At one point, we had five aerial streams going to keep the fire from spreading to other buildings.”

In 2016 chain grocer Mariano’s Fresh Market opened its 36th Chicago-area location just west of Cass Avenue on 63rd Street in Westmont, and the store celebrated its March 15 grand opening with a ribbon cutting and check presentation to a local charity.

The library’s board of trustees in May announced that Julie Milavec was hired as the next library director. She will replace former director Rick Ashton, who retired March 31.

Blues great returns to Westmont prior to Hall of Fame induction

“This feels like a dream,” Clearwater said about his induction.

Clearwater ​used to perform at local clubs in the 70s before moving to Westmont in 1980, according to the village. By that time, Clearwater was a staple in the Chicago blues scene, having relocated to the city from Macon, Mississippi, when he was 15 years old.

In 1980, Clearwater’s breakthrough set “The Chief” was released through Rooster Blues. His practice of wearing a Native American headdress onstage inspired the title of his first American LP. Fentanyl causing spike in overdose deaths in DuPage County A powerful synthetic opiate that can be up to 100 times stronger than morphine is behind a recent dramatic increase in opioid overdoses in DuPage County.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid pain reliever that can be 50 to 100 times more powerful than morphine, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. In recent years, the illegal use and manufacture of the highly potent drug has contributed to a nationwide epidemic of opioid overdose and death.

“There are large amounts of fentanyl being distributed in the Chicago metropolitan area, either being mixed with heroin or by itself,” DuPage County Coroner Richard Jorgensen said during a June 15 press conference called to alert the public to what he described as a “disturbing” trend that is causing an increase in overdoses and deaths throughout the area.

The store, at 150 W. 63rd St., created approximately 400 new jobs, according to Mariano’s. In addition to mainstays such as Oki Sushi and an oyster bar, the Westmont store is the only Mariano’s location with a wine wall that uses a rating system to help shoppers choose between different wines.

Students, school officials and the families of former District 99 students who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces gathered outside of South High’s west entrance for the first of two dedication ceremonies scheduled on the Thursday before Memorial Day. “We are here to remember the lives of the men we lost, we are here to honor their service, and we are here to pledge our commitment to teach future generations the cost of freedom and the necessity to work toward peaceful solutions,” said Jenne Dehmlow, social studies department chair at Downers Grove North High School.

Newly Passed 21st Century Cures Act Is No Panacea Not everyone thinks the Cures Act will be wonderful for patients

BY TRUDY LIEBERMAN RURAL HEALTH NEWS SERVICE Will patients benefit from the passage of the 21st Century Cures Act? After listening to politicians and reading the headlines, most people might think it’s the best thing ever to come along for patients.

“A new day for medical research is on the horizon,” proclaimed Rep. Fred Upton, the outgoing chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee which had just won a major victory last week. “The House and the Senate have passed this bipartisan legislation which will ensure our health system can keep pace with incredible advances in science and technology,” Upton said in the GOP’s weekly radio address. “We needed to do better. And with 21st Century Cures, we will.”

Media headlines mirrored Upton’s victory declaration. Headlines like this from the Wall Street Journal, “House Passes Health Bill to Speed Drug Approvals, Boost Biomedical Research” seemed to say it all: faster drug approvals, more money for research, less pesky regulation.

Or was there more to the story? Not everyone thinks the Cures Act will be wonderful for patients.

But their voices were drowned out in the slick public relations campaign Upton’s committee waged over the past few years using some 200 or so patient advocacy organizations to push for the bill.

Most of those groups have strong ties to the drug and medical device industry.

A recent study by Dr. Vinay Prasad, an oncologist at Oregon Health Sciences University, found that threequarters of 68 cancer advocacy groups he studied disclosed sponsorship from pharmaceutical companies.

Some groups received money from as many as 16 or 17.

Prasad told me, “Ten years from now, someone with a cancer diagnosis will be worse off with this bill.

People will be exposed to more things that don’t work.” Prasad and

others say the Cures Act actually lowers the regulatory standards for drugs and devices. It’s a step backward for patients.

In a nutshell the Act turns current regulatory practice on its head.

Randomized trials, the gold standard for medical research, may disappear if a drug company wants to sell a medicine for a different condition than the one it’s already approved for.

Instead it can use “real world evidence” to show the drug also works for a new indication.

Such “evidence” could be observational studies, which are less reliable than randomized trials, but are cheaper and take less time.

The FDA can use patient experience to inform its regulatory decisions – information about the impact of a disease or related therapy on patients’ lives.

The data can come from patients, family members, caregivers, patient advocacy organizations, disease research foundations and drug manufacturers.

The agency can approve new drugs on the basis of data summaries rather than requiring the FDA to independently analyze study results for a new drug indication.

Drug makers would have to submit

all their data, but the FDA would not have to review it.

And although the bill authorizes billions for new medical research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the funding is not guaranteed, and the NIH would have to fight Congress for the money.

The Cures Act is the culmination of a 20-year effort by the drug industry and Beltway think tanks to loosen standards and permit new uses for drugs already approved in order to expand their markets.

It can be traced back to the 1997 FDA Modernization Act, which was then - as the Cures Act is now - sold on the promise of getting cures to market faster.

The 1997 law loosened regulatory standards and reduced the number of clinical trials needed for drug approval.

Are the changes brought about by the earlier law a harbinger of what’s to come?

The reporting by John Fauber and his colleagues at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel offers a cautionary tale.

In the last few years the paper has reported how drug and device makers have spent huge sums of money to sell drugs for conditions that were once thought to be part of everyday life.

The reporters found that drug companies turned conditions such as overactive bladder, adult ADHD, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder into medically treatable ailments.

They reported that the latter was not even recognized as a mental disorder until 13 years after the first drug treatments were on the market.

“Drugs used to treat the various medicalized conditions don’t work that well and often have side effects that are nearly as common as the benefit,” Fauber told me.

Are we turning the calendar back to 1933 when a book called “100,000,000 Guinea Pigs” was published exposing the dangers of patent medicines?

Federal oversight of drugs was pretty lax then, and patients died.

It’s obvious drug makers will benefit from looser regulation. It remains to be seen whether patients will, too.

Local police stepping up ‘Drive Sober’ campaign If someone you know has been drinking, do not let that person drive Local police departments are looking for drunk drivers this holiday season as part of a special yearend “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement.

Beginning Dec. 16 and continuing into the New Year, motorists will see stepped up enforcement to watch for anyone who is driving impaired, distracted or without a seat belt, according to a news release from the department. Area police are helping Illinois drive zero fatalities to reality, so officers will have zero tolerance for drunk and drug impaired driving this holiday season.

Too often, drivers take to the roads after drinking at holiday celebrations. Data shows the decision to drive while impaired can have serious and sometimes deadly consequences. In 2015, 35,092 people in the United States were killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes, and 29 percent (10,265) died in crashes where the driver had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) over the limit of .08.

This ought to be the ‘most wonderful time of the year,’ so local police are doing whatever it takes to help save lives by keeping our roads safe. If you choose to drive impaired, you not only risk your

safety and that of others, but you will also face serious legal consequences.

Drunk or drug impaired driving offenders often serve jail time, lose their driver’s license, are charged higher insurance rates and pay dozens of other unanticipated expenses ranging from attorney fees, court costs, car towing and repairs, and lost wages due to time off work. But the ultimate cost of impaired driving is causing a traffic crash that results in injury or death.

Follow these tips to stay safe on the road this holiday season: If you will be drinking, plan on not driving.

Arrange for a safe ride home or designate a sober driver before you

start the party.

If you become intoxicated or drug-impaired, do not drive for any reason. Call a taxi, phone a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation.

If someone you know has been drinking, do not let that person get behind the wheel.

Take their keys, take them home or help them arrange a safe way home.

If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact your local law enforcement. Your actions could help save someone’s life.

Buckle your seat belt, regardless of where you are seated. By law, all occupants, in all seating positions, must wear their seat belt.

The sports year of 2016 was filled with several memorable moments, but some stood out above all the others.

Here are a few of those stories:

REPEAT CHAMPS Benet defeated Fremd 42-39 win to bring home its second straight Class 4A state title.

The game turned in the second quarter when Katie Jaseckas hit a three-pointer and that was followed by two threes from Doyle and a 12-6 lead.

Benet went out in front 19-8 before settling on a 21-13 lead at the half.

DOUBLED UP Both sides of the town brought home state champion hardware Saturday at the state track meet at Eastern Illinois University.

STATE TITLES ON A ROW FOR BENET GIRLS

Green won the Class 3A state title in the high jump in just her second year in the sport with a jump of 5-feet, 7-inches.

She placed third in the state last year with a jump of 5-6.

Meanwhile, Downers South senior Michaela Hackbarth was busy defending her state title in the 800-meter run, clocking in with a time of 2:09.91.

Hackbarth also placed fifth in the 400 with a time of 58.09 after scratching last year in the event to focus on the 4x400 relay, which placed fifth last year.

When Benet Academy was moved to Class 2A this year, one imagined a stronger postseason showing this year at the state meet at Eastern Illinois University.

However, it didn’t matter what class the Redwings were in for Benet junior pole vaulter Ali Munson.

the best vault of anyone in the state, no matter the class, Saturday in the finals with a vault of 12-feet, 9-inches.

After placing sixth in 3A last year, Munson bested her state vault from last year by a foot.

Bringing home three medals Saturday for Benet was junior Emma Jones. Jones took seventh in the long jump (17-10.5), sixth in the 300-meter hurdles (45.25) and eighth in the 100 hurdles (15.22).

ROARING FINISH A season ago, as then-junior Aaron Harris watched Plainfield Central’s Kahmari Montgomery win state titles in the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes, he knew that was a feat he wanted to try and pull off during his senior season.

While he came up just short of the trifecta, the Lisle sprinter did earn a pair of state championships and a second-place finish.

Harris won both the Class 2A 200 (22.17) and 400 (48.97), while placing second in the 100 (10.80).

The two individual titles equals the school standard set

by Chris Jones when he won the 400 and 800 in 1994. Harris leaves Lisle with seven total medals, one behind Jones’ total.

However, Harris both Harris and Jones recorded seven individual medals.

The University of Illinois recruit is the first Lisle sprinter to ever win the state title in the 200 dash and his second in the 100 is also a new benchmark for the program.

Harris alone also recorded the most team points ever scored by a Lisle team at the state meet, as he placed fifth with 28 total points.

The previous mark was 26 points scored in 1993 when the Lions placed fifth. The 1982 team earned a third-place finish with only 25 points.

TENNIS TITLE Benet Academy edged out Joliet Catholic Academy by one point to win the Class 1A state tite.

In doubles action, Katie Telford and Pauline Neubert placed second overall, falling to JCA’s Maddie Bauer and McCoy Hutchison, 6-4, 6-1 in the finals.

In singles action, Caroline Arnold went 3-2, while Kate Piazza split her four games.

EAGLES SOAR A season that began with great promise ended with a victory for the Benet boys soccer team, though not in the game they intended.

A 1-0 overtime loss to Latin in Friday’s Class 2A state semifinals ended the Redwings’ bid for their first state championship since 2001. But they bounced back Saturday to knock off Jacksonville 3-0 to take third place at Hoffman Estates.

That earned Benet (21-2-2), which was making its third state finals appearance, its third state trophy. The Redwings won Class A state titles in 2000 and 2001.

After a 3-0 loss to Fremd in the second game of the season, the Redwings went on a 21-game unbeaten streak and took a 15game winning streak into Friday’s semifinal against Latin.

FULL CIRCLE Downers Grove South softball coach Ron Havelka won the state championship game in his first year as head coach of the Mustangs.

Now, 24 years later, he again went out with his team winning its final game of the season.

It wasn’t the win in the state title game South was hoping for, but with a 10-1 win over DeKalb, the Mustangs sent Havelka out a winner – claiming third place in Class 4A. After the semifinal loss, winning the game for Havelka was one thing that was on the player’s minds.

Downers Grove South senior Caroline Hedgcock is not only the best softball player in the area, earning the Voyager Media Player of the Year honors, in June she was dubbed the best player in the state as she was awarded the Gatorade Illinois Player of the Year honors.

On the season, the University of Arkansas recruit compiled a 14-1 record in the circle along with a 0.951 ERA, leading the Mustangs (36-4) to a third-place finish in Class 4A. She struck out 131 batters in 95.2 innings pitched, while allowing just 49 hits.

At the plate, Hedgcock batted .549 with 22 home runs and 68 RBI. She posted 10 doubles and scored 59 runs.

Eagles take down defending NAIA champs The 12th-ranked Benedictine University men’s basketball team finished a trip to Hawaii by downing the defending NAIA-2 national champions and second ranked Indiana Wesleyan University in an exhibition on Wednesday night 82-78.

The game was an exhibition for both teams and Benedictine used the opportunity to roll out some different lineup combinations. Adam Reynolds did not play for Benedictine.

“We played with great intensity tonight,” said head coach Keith Bunkenburg, “I am proud of how we played after struggling last night. We put together two solid halves of basketball tonight. Plus, without one of our leaders (Reynolds), we were able to step up. Blaze (Mike Blaszczyk) and Ron (Tahron Harvey) played like men tonight.”

Benedictine, who led for most of the exhibition, shot 50 percent in the game. Tahron Harvey led all scorers with 26 points, adding nine rebounds. Michael Blaszczyk tallied 21 points while adding 10 boards. While in a different division, Indiana Wesleyan, a scholarship program, is the fourth nationallyranked opponent this season for Benedictine.

Harvey was selected as the MVP of the Big Island Classic while Blaszczyk earned a slot on the all-tournament team.

Blaszczyk scored 30 points and grabbed 17 ebounds in the two games of the tournament.

Harvey totaled 43 points while shooting 50 percent from the field and three-point range. The senior also pulled in 15 boards.

Benedictine and the host, Menlo College, who bested Benedictine 72-70 on Tuesday, were the only two schools to have multiple members on the all-tournament team.

Benedictine (7-3) returns

to the floor on December 31 against Concordia Wisconsin at home.

• Benedictine University men’s basketball players Michael Blaszczyk and Tahron Harvey have both been selected to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week. The Team of the Week honors the top five individual performances of the week at each of the five positions from around the country.

Harvey and Blaszczyk each posted double-doubles in a buzzer-beating win over Aurora. The tandem each scored 24 points. Harvey finished just shy of a triple-double with 24 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. Blaszczyk notched 24 points to go with 10 rebounds.

Harvey has been selected to the team for a second time this week and is also a two-time winner of the conference player of the week. The honor marks the first for Blaszczyk and the first for the team this season for someone besides Harvey.

The NACC occupied three slots on the team of the week with a player from Rockford also selected.

FOOTBALL Benedictine senior Jarrett Lecas has been selected as a D3football.com All-American.

The awards were announced as part of pregame coverage for Stagg Bowl XLIV, the NCAA Division III championship game.

Lecas earned two recognitions. On the special teams side, the Frankfort, Ill. native received a first team selection as a specialist. Lecas led the nation in blocked kicks with five, twice blocking a pair in a game. Lecas also returned two of his blocks for scores, collecting a blocked field goal at the end of the first half in a loss to Olivet for a touchdown. The 2015 AFCA

All-American also returned a blocked extra point for a twopoint conversion in a win over Rockford.

A four-time all-conference nod, Lecas also earned honorable mention status at safety.

Lecas led Benedictine this season with 92 tackles (48 solo-44 assist). The senior totaled six tackles for loss while recording three interceptions and five pass breakups. Lecas tallied 10 or more tackles five times during the season and amassed nine games with eight or more, leading or tying for the team lead in stops on three occasions. Lecas, along with Lakeland receiver Kezlow Smith, became the first players in conference history to make four consecutive appearances on the All-NACC First Team.

Twice honored as an all-region player, Lecas becomes the first D3football.com All-American since Ben Lockton logged an honorable mention slot at defensive line in 2011. Pat Ryan is the only other player to re-

ceive first team honors from D3football.com.

Lecas earned a pair of recognitions. Lecas was a Nort Division first team player for special teams and a second team player at safety. The senior has been selected by D3football.com in two seasons during his career.

The senior reeled in at least six passes in eight games while accumulating over 110 yards in six contests. Walker snared a touchdown in eight games this year, grabbing multiple scores on three instances including three against Concordia Wisconsin, which matched a then conference mark.
