The requested aggregate levy amounts are 4.7% higher than last year’s extensions. The district uses historical information and input from the Lisle Township Assessor to produce this request. COLUMN >> TO YOUR MENTAL HEALTH
Act Like You’re Sick: Perfect antidote to holiday stress Like a lot of guys, I absolutely hate to admit when I’m getting sick. I take it as a sign of weakness, of mortality. But at some point, around the time I can’t breathe or taste anything, I have to come to terms with myself and admit that I’m not well. And when I do, something amazing happens: I start to take care of myself and eventually feel better. START BEFORE YOU HAVE TO As long as we ignore all of our body’s warning signs, we remain unhealthy. But the simple steps of acknowledging the problem and taking some basic actions make all the difference. Removed from denial, we are free to sound the alarms and send all of our reinforcements to put us back together. We allow ourselves to sleep more, eat healthier, take a break from work, and even see the people we care about more often. The irony is that the acts of a sick person are a foundation for long-term health, both physically and mentally. The problem is that we don’t usually start them unless there’s already something wrong. Instead of waiting for our bodies and minds to fail, I want to recommend a better approach: Act like you’re sick right now. You will get all the same benefits without the misery of actually being ill. CHECK YOUR INTERNAL RAIN BARREL Anything that presents a threat to our safety or wellbeing is a stress. Thou-

sands of years ago, our ancestors’ stressors were physical in nature, centered around life-or-death situations. Today, most stress comes from low stakes encounters, such as work and relationship difficulties, or simply trying to survive the holidays. However, the potential for harm is greater than ever because these kinds of routine events bombard us on a daily basis, and they typically go unnoticed. The Centers for Disease Control suggests that close to 90 percent of our illnesses are linked to stress, from the common cold to chronic pain. In fact, a good argument can be made that successfully managing stress is the most important task of our adult lives. Like a rain barrel, our stress accumulates over time. This means that you may be unaware of any harmful effects until the internal barrel spills over. Once it does, you can’t undo the consequences. A better strategy involves knowing

your triggers, the conditions that cause you the most stress. Some can be avoided, while others can be dealt with better. Of course some stress is unavoidable – and even helpful – so there’s no use in trying to take advantage of your sick role for too long. THE GIFT THAT KEEPS GIVING Regardless of your religious affiliation, family history, or shopping preferences, the holiday season inevitably brings with it moments of wonder, as well as a full plate of stress. In the end, no one else will take care of you if you don’t do it for yourself. This is the mantra of all of the helping professions, from nursing to counseling, yet it is one of the most poorly followed pieces of advice. The result is that a lot of qualified people leave their jobs because they don’t take care of themselves. If you want to continue experiencing the same results of unmanaged stress – feeling sick, tired, and lacking drive – then keep doing the same thing. But trust me when I say that being stubborn about your health is a punishment that will stay with you long past the new year.

Cooking safety during the holidays If a fire starts in a pan or pot, put a lid on it or slide a cookie sheet over it To keep a cooking fire from ruining your holiday celebration the Plainfield Fire Protection District has the following safety tips for you: Stand by your pan and keep an eye on what you fry. Stay in the kitchen when cooking on your range or cooktop so you can monitor the food you’re cooking. Most cooking fires are caused by unattended cooking. When using a turkey fryer always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for safe and proper
use. Always use a turkey fryer outdoors but not on a wooden deck or inside a garage. Use a turkey fryer with thermostat controls to ensure the oil does not become overheated. Thaw your turkey completely, ice on the turkey will cause the hot oil to splatter. Make sure you don’t overfill the fryer with oil to prevent the hot oil from overflowing when you add the turkey. Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the turkey fryer at all times.

Downers Grove South hands rival Dowers Grove North its first loss of the season in cross-town clash BY SCOTT SCHMID For the Bugle www.buglenewspapers.com
With one team entering with an undefeated record, Saturday’s crosstown matchup between Downers Grove South and Downers Grove North held a little extra meaning. The visiting Mustangs then went out and played the role of spoiler, using the three-point line to help end the Trojans’ perfect early season run, prevailing 5849. “They are a good team and they have some really good players,” Downers Grove North coach Jim Thomas said. “They took it to us.” Downers Grove South led by as many as eight points in the third quarter before three-pointers by Charlie Kaufmann and Ryan Pustelnik knotted the score at 38-apiece heading into the fourth. But the Mustangs responded with a 7-0 run to start the final quarter and never looked back.

TJ Clifford scored nine of his 13 points in the final frame to keep the home team at bay. “My shots weren’t falling early on,” said Clifford, who also tallied 11 rebounds. “So I just decided to keep passing to open people and rebound. In the third and fourth quarters, I knew I had to step it up and get to the rim as much as possible.” The visitors hit nine threepointers in the game, five of them from Denis Alibegovic, who finished with a game-high 18 points. Tyree Spencer chipped in with 16 points. “We all play together,” Alibegovic said. “It doesn’t matter who scores for us. We have such good chemistry. We’ve been playing together for so long and we know where each other is on the court.” Downers Grove South, which improved to 6-2 on the winter, next heads to the Jack Tosh tournament on Dec. 26.

Shepherd helps North defeat South BY SCOTT SCHMID For the Bugle www.buglenewspapers.com

Savannah Shepherd scored 11 points off the bench for North in a win over South.
SPOILER FROM PAGE 7 Eddie Boston had 12 points and Pustelnik finished with 11 for Downers Grove North, which fell to 8-1. A night earlier, the Trojans improved to 3-0 in the West Suburban Silver conference with a 42-40 win over York. “We were really happy about
that win (against York),” Thomas said. “It was kind of an ugly game. We have eight wins, we’ve won ugly, we’ve won big, we’ve won by a little, we hit a game-winner. We have had a really successful start to the season.” The team will now gear up to head to the legendary Proviso West tournament for the first
After tearing her ACL in May, Downers Grove North’s Savannah Shepherd worked tirelessly to get back for the start of her senior season. Games like Saturday make all that hard work worth it. Coming off the bench to score nine of her 11 points in the third quarter, Shepherd helped North to a 51-38 win over crosstown rival Downers Grove South. “It feels great,” Shepherd said. “I’m feeling good, I did all my physical therapy. I wanted to be back for my senior season. “My teammates did a good job seeing the floor. A lot of my points came from everybody pushing the ball down the court. It was a big game, I knew I had to be ready and make my lay-ups.” Up by eight at halftime, Shepherd’s production helped push the Trojans’ advantage to 35-26 after three quarters. “She has battled back and worked hard to get back in shape,” Downers Grove North coach Stephan Bolt said. “This was a breakthrough game. She did was seniors are supposed to do. She came off the bench and made plays. She did a great job on both ends of the court.” The home team put the contest away with an 11-3 run to start the fourth, spurred on by seven points from Julie Pospisilova. Despite being held scoreless through the first 16 minutes, Pospisilova finished with 11 points, six rebounds and four steals. Hannah Ilyavi contributed eight points and four steals and
time. They open up with New Trier. “We got the invite and we accepted it,” Thomas said. “We told the kids, you have to win big games to make a run in March. So this will be a good test and we are looking forward to the opportunity. We are excited to play at Proviso West.”
Ellie Gross and Julia Kramper had six points apiece. The Trojans improved to 5-6 after falling to York the day before in West Suburban Silver conference action. “We lost to Geneva by 20 points,” Bolt said. “Other than that, we’ve been right there every single game. We’ve just needed a couple of plays on both ends of the floor to get it. We got a lot of plays (against DGS).” Downers Grove North will return to the court on Dec. 26 at the Wheaton North tournament. As for the Mustangs, they came in winners of four of their last five but could not get going offensively. Kasandra Rugienius tallied 15 points and three steals and Holly Lueken scored 11. “We’ve been averaging 60 points and we go into the half with 10 points,” Downers Grove South coach Lyndsie Long said.
“They were great defensively. We had been playing great basketball but it feels like with our crosstown rival, we don’t want it as much as them. Every year, they seem to want it more.” Downers Grove South saw its record evened at 5-5, though the Mustangs are 4-1 in the West Suburban Gold. The sole loss was a two-point defeat to state ranked Proviso East. “Proviso East obviously is one of the top teams in the state,” Long said. “We were up literally all game. They are a great team and they put a lot of pressure on you and we had a couple of turnovers and they capitalized. Overall I’m proud of my girls and proud of the way they are playing. I just want them to take a step up when we play the better competition.” After taking on Willowbrook on Dec. 22, the Mustangs take part in the Oswego East tourna-

We make $55,000 a year, and two of our smaller debts — one car and a credit card — are both $7,500. The credit card has a higher interest rate, so my wife thinks we should pay it off first. I look at the car as a necessity, and for that reason I think we should pay it off first. Who’s right? PAT DEAR PAT, When the rules of paying off debts from smallest to largest don’t apply, I look at things this

way: If you have two debts that are of equal amounts, I would attack the one with the larger interest rate first. In your case, that would be the credit card debt. I get what you’re saying about the car. You guys might be in a bind if something happened and you lost one car. But it’s also something you could work around if you had no other choice. So yeah, knock out the credit card first then move on to the car. Going this route will serve two
purposes: First, it will save you some money. And second, I’ve got a feeling it will fire up your wife and get her on board with the plan even more than she already is. She’s taking this seriously if she’s eyeballing interest rates, Pat. So use this momentum to work together, and knock out that debt! — DAVE DEAR DAVE, What are your thoughts on transferring an IRA over to gold? SANDY DEAR SANDY, Honestly, I think that’s about the dumbest thing a person could do. I hope I wasn’t unclear. Gold is going down like a rock right now as people start to believe in the economy and the economic direction of this country again. The stock market indicates this is true, and in the process, gold
becomes worth less and less. Gold is essentially a fear-based product, and the less fear that’s out there, the cheaper gold is. That’s not how you want to fund your IRA, Sandy. You want to fund it with something that has a long track record based on growth due to the performance of the companies involved — not someone’s greed or fear. Gold is a horrible investment, and I don’t own any except for one nice watch and a pair of cufflinks. That’s it! — DAVE * Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions. Jefferson Jr. High brings holiday cheer to library Members of the choir brought traditional carols and light-hearted holiday songs It was a cold night but the mood was festive and hearts were warmed when over 50 members of the Jefferson Junior High sang at the Woodridge Public Library December 15. Members of the choir brought traditional carols and
light-hearted holiday songs to the library lobby for over 170 family, friends and Public Library patrons to enjoy. Students, parents and teachers braved the cold to walk over from the local junior high. After warming up with hot chocolate, the Jefferson Singers delighted the crowd with lovely and lively harmonies, including a crowd-pleasing Deck-The-Halls sing-along. Special guests, the Downers Grove Concert Singers, joined the Jefferson Singers for several songs and the finale.
