The VFW Teacher of the Year award contest recognizes exceptional teachers for their outstanding commitment to teaching Americanism and patriotism to their students.

“Mr. Wechman is an extremely patriotic teacher, who has touched the hearts and lives of many Jefferson students and the Woodridge community. Mr. Wechman has done a tremendous job of educating students of what it

truly means to be an American,” Jefferson Principal Justin Warnke wrote in his nomination letter. “He creates experiences for students to examine and question whether freedom is really free, and the responsibilities and rights of being an American citizen. I cannot think of a more

deserving teacher for the award of VFW Teacher of the Year.”

St. Francis Xavier students ‘strike’ up friendships with SEASPAR Suburbanite Bowl in Westmont was a whirlwind of strikes, spares, highfives, and impromptu dance parties on the morning of December 1, when the South East Association for Special Parks And Recreation (SEASPAR) partnered with St. Francis Xavier School of La Grange for a special bowling event for people with disabilities.

Fifty-eight sixthgrade students and 25 chaperones from St. Francis Xavier teamed up with 90 adults with disabilities participating in programs with SEASPAR, Little Friends of Downers Grove, and Lily Cache Special Recreation Association of Bolingbrook, for a few leisurely games of bowling.

Teacher resigns amid sexual harassment allegations No charges filed but police investigation continues; former student encouraging open communication and dialogue

The Community High School District 99 Board of Education accepted the resignation tendered by a Downers Grove North High School faculty member at its Dec. 11 special meeting.

The teacher, William Miller, is leaving amid sexual harassment allegations recently reported to Downers Grove Police by Jennifer Boudinot, a 1999 graduate of Downers Grove North and a current resident of Woodridge, N.Y. Superintendent Hank Thiele issued a letter to its students, parents and staff following the special meeting and said they had conducted an investigation with the information available to them. “We are unable to share details on any personnel matters related to current or former employees,” the statement read. “We will continue to cooperate fully with the Downers Grove Police Department. Their investigation remains open; no charges have been filed to date.”

Miller was placed on administrative leave in mid-November, and he has served as a District 99 employee since 1995.

Under the separation agreement, Miller forfeited his teaching license and agreed not to teach in a K-12 setting again.

“I think it’s a good first step, but I think the District 99 Board of Education needs to do more to address the situation,” Boudinot said, referring to the board’s decision. “How are they helping students during this difficult time?

They keep repeating over and over that victims should come forward, but they don’t seem to have cultivated a supportive environment that would allow students to feel comfortable doing that. Furthermore, students who weren’t victimized don’t seem to be getting the guidance they need to frame this issue in a healthy, productive way.”

Boudinot said the timing of her recent report to Downers Grove Police was inspired, in part, by the national conversation on sexual harassment surfacing in news media in recent months.

“I was reading in the news about [Alabama’s Republican candidate for Senate] Roy Moore, and the culture that allowed him to ‘date’ teenage girls,” she said.

“To me, that sounded a lot like what I experienced at DGN in the 90s.”

Boudinot made a recent Facebook post asking “Are we ready to talk about this?” She named some teachers in the comments section and went on to identify classmates who shared similar experiences in their encounters with Miller.

“Once we realized that three women had been affected and it seemed like he had a very particular pattern, we became really concerned and knew we had to do something,” Boudinot said.

Thiele stressed that there is no time limit for reporting a complaint against any staff member and said the District’s door is open to all of its students and staff, regardless if they are currently enrolled or graduated.

“I think [District 99] needs to make it easier for students to come forward, and also give stu-

dents the skills they need to address sexual harassment outside of the school setting,” Boudinot said. “When I was in health class at DGN, they showed us images of genitals infected with [sexually transmitted diseases,] but they never told us the signs of a predator, or told us to tell an adult right away if we knew about a teacher who was giving alcohol to a student, that kind of thing.”

Boudinot wanted it to be clear that the District’s policies do not go far enough to address the central issue, which is the power dynamic demonstrated in teacherstudent relationships.

“Since starting the anonymous ‘DGNnightwatchwomen@gmail. com’ email address to collect reports of harassment and sexual contact from alumni, I have received many messages from victims of both Bill Miller’s, as well as victims of seven other teachers at Downers Grove North,” she said.

“It’s clear to me that the administration that was in place when I attended DGN failed me and my fellow classmates.”

Boudinot said more victims “hiding in the shadows” could fear consequences for coming out will be greater for them, compared to

those who did the victimizing and urged District 99 to work toward better supporting students for the world ahead of them.

“Show [students] that when they become leaders of companies, film studios, restaurants, and yes—school boards—that they can take a powerful stance against those who don’t represent their values and ethics and use that stance to empower those who were hurt,” she said. “Please see this not as a reason for Downers Grove North to hide shamefully, but to proudly show that it takes its responsibility to its students seriously, and that painful policies and incidents of the past can be profound guides for meaningful change for the future.”

Thiele recognizes that many people in the school community will be impacted by these revelations, and said they are “thankful for the sensitivity and support that our students, staff, families and community have given and will continue to give to one another.”

Peoria settlement sacked, burned during War of 1812

BY CHRIS KAERGARD Of the Journal Star of Peoria If schoolchildren learn one thing about the War of 1812, it’s that the British marched on and burned Washington, D.C. But Illinois schoolchildren studying the war could also learn about the burning of a settlement in their own territory, one set ablaze by their own countrymen: the village located where Peoria stands today, in a location that had been settled since the late 1600s.

The conflagration there, almost certainly unplanned, gave rise to a half-century-long legal fight and slowed the city’s development.

In the early months of that conflict between the British and Americans, tensions grew in the western territories of the United States, including the Illinois Territory, because of fears that local American Indian tribes were either loyal to the British or being induced to attack American settlers, particularly after such an attack at Fort Dearborn.

Hence the decision by the state’s territorial governor, Ninian Edwards, to send a group of militiamen — some from Missouri — up the Illinois River in November 1812 to check into conditions in the village of fewer than 100 people.

“The Missourians were deeply suspicious of this thriving and peaceful village, unmolested within 10 miles of the main council site for Indian tribes that swarmed Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Iowa,” a Journal Star archival piece from 1962 reads.

Capt. Thomas Craig’s men began to sack the town while residents were at Sunday Mass.

“In the face of protests from Thomas Forsythe, an official Indian agent and … the village priest, the property was temporarily returned,” according to another Journal Star historical recounting from 1963. “Harmless shots from across the river, probably by hunters, led Craig to say his boats had been fired upon.

The French denied it, but Craig demanded the attackers be turned over to him. When the villagers protested, Craig sacked the town.

This illustration, created for Peoria’s tricentennial in 1991, showcases the beginning of the peaceful coexistence between settlers and American Indians in the Peoria area of the Illinois River valley. That continued coexistence caused puzzlement and concern among territorial authorities at the start of the War of 1812 and resulted in a military expedition to the village on the site of modern-day Peoria.

Its buildings were burned, cattle killed, the wine vaults raided and villagers were taken prisoner and shipped down river. Belated orders from the governor to belay and free the prisoners finally reached the group, with men, women and children being turned loose with few provisions in freezing weather near modern-day Alton. One of the survivors later became the wife of the state’s fourth governor, John Reynolds, who called out the state’s militia for the Black Hawk War. The burning of the village and the stranding of its members in fact helped turn some local Indians against the American settlers.

The destruction cleared the way for the construction of Fort Clark at the corner of what is now Liberty and Water streets in 1813 as a bulwark against now-hostile Indian tribes. It remained on the site for only a few years until rebuilding of residential properties resumed nearby.

One problem: The displaced residents from 1812 had deeds to the property, dating back to the original French settlements there and began to petition Congress in 1813 to be reimbursed for their lost land. That process continued as Illinois entered its early days of statehood.

“By 1837, when surveys were made, American settlers were occupying these lots — but the sales to these inhabitants were made subject to the French claims,” Ernest E. East writes in an un-

published “History of Peoria” volume, as later recounted by local historian Bill Adams.

Some 32 former residents or their heirs subsequently filed claims on 70 lots — some of which devolved into lawsuits in county court or federal court. A piece by the Peoria Historical Society explains: “But the legal process moved very slowly, which in turn slowed the development of downtown Peoria. As a lawyer, Abraham Lincoln worked on some of these cases in the 1850s. Eventually, the displaced settlers were paid thousands of dollars in reparations for the loss of their homes.”

A handful of those cases first had to go to the state Supreme Court, and one to the U.S. Supreme Court, the latter with Lincoln as one of the attorneys involved. The litigation ended when real estate baron Charles Balance finally bought out the remaining claims on eight lots for $31,000 in 1867 — about $500,000 in today’s funds.

Mustangs beat trojans in District 99 cross-town battle

In another edition of the District 99 Basketball Crosstown on the South Side, the Mustangs of Downers Grove South, took a 31-28 halftime lead, over thir rivals from Downers Grove North, on Saturday, Dec. 16.

The Mustangs added to a 2928 lead, scoring the last basket of the half.

“Head Coach Olson told us at halftime, that the first, three minutes of the third quarter, are crucial,” Downers Grove senior guard Patrick Shaughnessy said.

Indeed.

In fact over the first 5:33 of the third quarter, the Mustangs would score the next 15 points of the game and open up a 46-28 lead. Game over. The Mustangs (6-4), would go on to a 62-53 win.

Mustang junior guard, Justin Eagins, who would lead the Mustangs with 20 points, would score five points, in the run. Junior Wesley Hooker, would score all five of his points, during the run and Adam Puszkarski, would bury a three-point dagger.

“This was a very exciting game,” Eagins said. “We wanted it more and we really locked them up, after halftime. I play every night for my teammates. I try to get them in good position to score and they do the same for me.”

Shaughnessy, would add four points in the quarter and then put the Trojans away, with a seven-point, fourth quarter.

Shaughnessy would stuff the stat sheet, with 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and a blocked shot.

“Tonight we played as a team and came out with the big W,” Shaughnessy said. “We are a very young team and I try to lead us in any way I can, to victory.”

After winning a double-overtime 58-56 win at the Purple Gym over York, Downers Grove North (7-2) was looking to make this a special pre-Christmas weekend.

After scoring 28 points against the Dukes on Friday night, junior guard Samaj Henderson, tallied 15 of the Trojans, 28 firsthalf points.

During the Mustang thirdquarter onslaught, Henderson was shutout. The lone Trojan score of the dismal Trojan third quarter, was a three-pointer from junior Trey Boston (11 points).

Henderson responded by scoring 18 points in the fourth quarter.

Henderson would finish with 33 points, eight rebounds and had three steals.

The Trojans were never able to get the Mustang lead under 10 points until the final seconds of the game.

“A great weekend for Downers Grove,” Downers Grove South head coach Chris Olson said. “I

didn’t say anything at halftime.

I just told the kids that they knew the kids from North, from having played with and against them, their whole lives. Go out and get the win and they did.”

North gets win in girls’ district battle

Coming off a heart-breaking loss at York on Friday, December 15, the Trojan girls of Downers Grove North, were in need of a big win.

The loss to the Dukes was the fourth consecutive defeat for Downers Grove North Head Basketball coach Stephan Bolt’s, girls.

A victory, on the South Side, in the District 99 crosstown battle, against their rivals from Downers Grove South (6-6), would be

great medicine for the Trojans’ program.

Playing 32 minutes of stifling, in-your face defense, the Trojans (5-8) picked up the much-needed win. Led by junior Julia Kramper and sophomore Ellie Gross, North defeated South 30-25, on Saturday, December 16.

Kramper, scored 14 of her game-high 18 points in the first half, leading, the Trojans to a 1714 halftime lead. Kramper nailed three of her four long-range, three-pointers, to supply the Trojans with the three-point halftime margin .

“We really came out ready to play,” Kramper said. “We were able to knock down our shots and we played great defense tonight.”

Gross scored 9 of her 12 points in the second half and took over the game in the fourth quarter.

With the Trojans clinging to a 30-29 lead with 5:38 left, Gross buried a jumper, just inside the three-point line and was fouled.

Gross, calmly completed the oldfashioned three-point-play for a 33-29 Trojan lead.

Behind junior Maggie Greco (13 points) the host Mustangs closed to 35-33 with 1:34 left in

the contest.

The play of the game was next.

With the Mustangs in possession and gunning for a tie, or the lead with a 3, Gross’ steal and layup gave the Trojans a 37-33 lead, they would not relinquish.

“On the key steal, South was trying to score in transition,” Gross said. “I stepped into the pass and the ball fell into my hands and I was able to score. I also, was able to hit my shots, tonight.”

Trojans junior Jaylen Harris, had four of her six points, in the fourth quarter. Harris also

added two key steals and three rebounds.

“This was a huge win for us after a tough loss last night,” Bolt said. “We really played great defense tonight. We have been telling Ellie to shoot more and she really made the plays, that helped pick up this huge win.”

Mustang senior Jennifer Masello and junior Holly Lueken, each had nine points for DGS. “We were very stagnant on offense tonight,“ Downers Grove South head coach Lyndsie Long said. “We really didn’t come out ready to play.”

But after that, I want you to turn around and attack that debt with even more intensity than before. Then, once you’re out of debt, you can celebrate that with something a lot nicer.

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, I just accepted a new job that will pay me $30,000 a year more than my old position. I’ve got about $55,000 in debt I’ve been working hard to pay off, and I know now I need to adjust my budget. Do you have any advice?

MITCH DEAR MITCH, The first thing I’d say is don’t go crazy on any big-ticket items while you’re paying off debt. Keep it simple, and go out to celebrate with a nice dinner after you get your first paycheck. Remember, the more you put toward debt, the faster it goes away.

For the time being, I want you to remain passionate about getting out of debt. Your thought process needs to be, “Wow, I got a new job making more money. I can get out of debt even quicker!”

DEAR DAVE, You say to never give collectors access to your checking account.

Does that include debit cards, too?

SUE DEAR SUE, Yes, it does! Collectors are looking to get as much as they can on a bad, late debt. I’ve seen numerous situations where collectors have taken more than the agreedupon amount from someone’s account once they gained access.

To be fair, the collection business does have a few good people in it.

But it also has those who will lie and make threats.

If you’re doing something like scheduling utility payments to come through your debit card or out of your personal checking account, that’s perfectly fine.

But there are much safer ways to handle situations with debt collectors. You can send a money order overnight, or wire the cash to them. You can also send a cashier’s check. Some folks have even used pre-paid debit cards that aren’t attached to any of their

accounts.

The pre-paid debit card isn’t my favorite way to handle these things, but it’s a lot better than giving a dishonest collector the opportunity to really mess you up!
