South East Association for Special Parks and Recreation honor local Special Olympic athletes Visitors to the office of the South East Association for Special Parks And Recreation are greeted by an “International & National Athletes Wall of Fame.”

One of the roles of SEASPAR, which offers recreational programs and services to individuals with disabilities, is training athletes for Special Olympics competitions. The Wall of Fame is a group of plaques honoring the 11 SEASPAR Special Olympics athletes who have been selected to compete in World or USA Games over the last 40 years.

“The Wall of Fame is not, and has never been, done; it’s always been a work in progress,” said Susan Friend, executive director of SEASPAR, as she addressed the athletes who appear on the Wall of Fame, along with their families. “Today, we’re stopping time at SEASPAR’s 40th anniversary to change the fact that we have not recognized this group of people at one time and place.”

During a dedication ceremony of the Wall of Fame Oct. 30 at the SEASPAR office in Downers Grove, that group was honored. The event recognized the athletes, their families and their coaches, and it gave them an opportunity to reunite and celebrate their hard work and success.

Eight of the 11 athletes whose faces grace the wall attended the ceremony, and all were asked to share a few memories from their experience competing at the national or international level. Many of the athletes spoke of the thrill of winning, as they proudly donned the medals they earned in the competitions.

David Svitak, of Downers Grove, earned gold with Team Illinois in basketball at the 2010 USA Summer Games in Nebraska “Coming back home with a medal around my neck was just a really good feeling,” he said.

Downers Grove resident Jeff Osowski, who earned a bronze medal in the 9-hole golf event at the 2014 USA Summer Games in New Jersey, is a man of few words but impressed the crowd at the ceremony

with a demonstration of his winning swing.

However, many of the athletes’ most treasured memories were not of their achievements in competition, but of their multitude of experiences as they traveled, saw new places, met new people, and enjoyed everything that the trips to competitions had to offer.

Cindy Zajecka, formerly of La Grange Park, was SEASPAR’s first World Summer Games athlete in 1995. She and Team USA took fourth place in volleyball during those games, which took place in New Haven, Connecticut. Zejecka recalled that she especially enjoyed the “away from home” experience.

Michele Forzley, of Westmont, also spoke. He earned gold in 9-hole golf at the 2006 USA Summer Games in Iowa.

“The opening ceremonies were awesome; Hootie and the Blowfish was playing,” Forzley recalled.

Forzley’s sentiment about the entertainment at Special Olympics events was echoed by Randy Naberhaus, of Woodridge, who earned bronze in the singles tennis competition at the 2003 World Summer Games in Dublin, Ireland.

When asked what his favorite moment was, he replied, “Seeing U2!”

As all of the athletes spoke about their experiences, a common thread emerged. Their fondest memories are of the people they met and the friendships they developed at the competitions.

“It was fun meeting different teams from different countries like Jamaica and Great Britain, besides meeting the people that I played USA volleyball with,” said Wayne Neumann, of Westmont, who competed in the 2003 World Summer Games with Naberhaus and brought home gold in volleyball.

Darien resident Christina Schutz, who earned gold in volleyball at the 2014 USA Summer Games in New Jersey, also remembered the people the most.

“I still keep in touch with all of my friends from Nationals,” she said. “I miss everybody.”

“When I was skiing in the Giant Slalom, I fell,” she said. “But, I got up, got my skis back on; my goggles were filled with snow, but I was able to finish the course. When I got to the finish line, I told my parents, ‘I trained not to quit.’”

SEASPAR’s very first athlete to compete in a national or international Special Olympics competition, Karen Buro, earned two gold medals in cross country skiing at the 1985 World Winter Games in Utah. Buron passed away in 2001 but left a legacy of inspiration. Her family traveled from across the country to attend SEASPAR’s dedication ceremony.

“Karen was very proud of her two gold medals but if she were up here, what she would tell you is her favorite memory of the Special Olympics in Park City, Utah, is that she got to meet Marsha Brady,” Buron’s brother, Larry, recalled.

Like the other athletes who would come after her, Buron’s fondest memories of her Special Olympics competition were not of winning, but of experiencing new things and meeting new people.

The Buron family generously donated Karen’s two World Games gold medals to SEASPAR, to be displayed alongside her plaque on the Wall of Fame. The Buron family said they felt that SEASPAR is where the medals belonged, the organization said.

Local leaders to discuss vacant Dominick’s stores Officials from impacted communities to consider development options Nov. 10

Despite a prominent location on 63rd Street, the site of a former Dominick’s grocery store in Woodridge remains empty, as do many other former sites of the shuttered grocer throughout the area.

But, local leaders are aiming to band together in hopes to change that. Town leaders and economic development directors from more

than 20 communities impacted by the vacant Dominick’s stores plan to come together this week to discuss efforts made to fill the space and new strategies to market the areas.

Elected officials and Albertson’s representatives will hold a press conference Nov. 10 at Maggiano’s Little Italy of Naperville, 1847 Freedom Drive, to speak about the efforts made over the past three years to fill the vacant stores and discuss future strategies.

Safeway, the parent company of Dominick’s, shuttered all of the grocery retailer’s locations in the Chicago market in December 2013. Shortly thereafter, many of the stores, such as those in nearby Downers Grove and Shorewood, were bought by other grocery chains, including Mariano’s and Caputo’s.

However, the Woodridge location still sits vacant with no sign of a new lease.

“Residents desire additional grocery store options in the community,” Woodridge Mayor Gina Cunningham said. “Since Dominick’s vacated the 63rd Street location, Woodridge has aggressively reached out to grocery stores to consider occupying the site.”

In 2014, communities formed a group to collaboratively market and solicit tenants for the vacancies. With an initial goal of reaching beyond the Chicago market, the communities developed the “One Call, 10 Stores, a Million Customers” campaign, which has since grown to include more than 20 communities.

Road to victory in WWII For Veterans Day, remembering one soldier’s dangerous job of carrying vital supplies through danger

BY MARK DEPUE ABRAHAM LINCOLN PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY AND MUSEUM, DIRECTOR OF ORAL HISTORY Frank Merkley is a World War II veteran who never fired his weapon in anger, but his contributions to America’s war effort were every bit as important as those of soldiers in the thick of combat. Merkley, now 96 and living in Princeton, Ill., spent his war driving trucks.

It was a rare case in which the army found the perfect job based on Frank’s peacetime experiences. He had left school when he was 13 to help support the family, and had driven trucks since he was 16, working for his brother.

Merkley was drafted in November 1942, and was shipped to Persia in early 1943. Once there, he drove his truck along a tenuous road deep into modern-day Iran, the first leg of a long trip toward the Soviet frontier. (America, the Arsenal of Democracy, sent more than four million tons of supplies to Russia through Persia during the war.)

Then in January 1945, Frank’s unit, the 3949th Quartermaster Truck Company, was transferred to the ChinaBurma-India theater of operations.

His job? To drive over the infamous “hump” in the mountains of Burma to deliver supplies to China.

erous Ledo Road, Frank’s truck got a flat tire. Because of that, he left the assembly area several hours after the rest of his convoy. “I don’t know how I’m here today, except the Lord saved me—twice in one day,” Merkley said 71 years later.

“I was going along through that one road, that mountain there, and I come over way at the top and come around a big curve … All of a sudden the truck stopped. … The Lord stopped it. Believe me or not, the Lord stopped that truck.” A Chinese guard, whose job was to alert trucks of the impending danger, then came racing out to the road to guide Merkley around a bridge that was rotting away.

Had Frank not stopped, the truck would have plunged into a deep ravine, taking him along with it.

Merkley was still on the road late that night trying to catch up with his convoy. Because of the fear of snipers, he was forbidden to use his headlights, and when it started to rain, the night turned pitch black.

“I couldn’t see a thing out the windshield, not one thing,” he said.

“Couldn’t even see the dash. … I had my foot out on the front wheel fender, and I was trying to keep that front wheel along the edge of that mountain.”

On his left, the mountain shot up toward the sky. On his right was a sheer cliff. It was certain death to any driver

who missed a curve on a dirt road that was barely wide enough to accommodate the big American trucks.

Recalling that night during his oral history interview, Frank continued his story, his voice filled with emotion.

“All of a sudden a big bolt of lightning come … and it lit that road up just like day. And it put daggers in – zing, zing, zing, zing, zing, zing – like that all the way up to a big sharp curve.”

Guided by that brief glimpse of the danger ahead, Frank pushed forward into the dark. “And I hit that curve right on the nose,” he said.

Frank has no doubt that God had intervened to save his life that night. “I can’t hardly believe myself the way He lit that road up for me so I could see. …

He lit that road up just like it was day time out there – just bright lightning.”

As far as Frank is concerned, God wasn’t quite done with him yet. On the first leg of his journey back to the states, a flight from China to Calcutta, he survived a plane crash. He then boarded a Liberty ship, which sailed into a three-day typhoon in the South China Sea. Needless to say, he was happy to get back to America. Once home in Princeton, he soon got back to work, eventually starting a pest control business and finally retiring at 90 after a lifetime of work.

Benet takes third place in state

HOFFMAN ESTATES — A season that began with great promise ended with a victory for the Benet boys soccer team, though not in the game they intended.

A 1-0 overtime loss to Latin in Friday’s Class 2A state semifinals ended the Redwings’ bid for their first state championship since 2001. But they bounced back Saturday to knock off Jacksonville 3-0 to take third place at Hoffman Estates.

“It is very hard to believe it’s

over,” Benet senior defender Charlie Kane said. “We were pretty close to coming out on top.

“We took a loss yesterday but we were able to end the season on a win. That doesn’t happen very often.”

Three was the magic number for the Redwings on Saturday.

They became just the second team to score three goals on Jacksonville as Kane, senior Ben Kelly and junior Ryan Tomecek each found the back of the net.

Redwings win again

NORMAL — At the beginning of the season, this season’s Benet football team wanted to cement its place in Redwing history.

The guys wanted to challenge the mark set by the 2012 team that won three playoff games and reached the state Class 7A semifinals.

“Since day one this season, we have said that we want to get back to where the 2012 team was,” said running back Marty Dosen. “That was the team that made the historic run in the playoffs, so since day one we have stressed that we have to establish our own legacy.”

Benet took one more step toward that goal last week, as it traveled to Normal Community and defeated the Ironmen 38-14.

“We started off a little slow in the second half and then we got

going. I am really proud of this group,” said Bent coach Pat New. “We put in a ton of plays offensively and we have caught up to the learning curve and we just continue to improve on offense and the defense has been great all year.”

That defense held Normal scoreless in three of the four quarters – something that had not been done all season to the highest scoring team in the bracket.

Even as the Benet offense pulled away, the Ironmen had the ability to come back, but any real hope Normal had was sent to the sideline with 2 minutes, nine seconds left in the third quarter when Benet linebacker Alec McEachern knocked out senior quarterback Grant Price.

It was a clean hit to the chest, but Price’s head slammed into the grass and forced him into the concussion protocol. He was 11

of 16 passing for 155 yards before going out. He threw a pair of firstquarter touchdowns that each answered Benet scores.

“I was not trying to lower my head and I don’t want to see anyone go out, but that was the play that really changed the momentum,” McEachern said.

While the defense was stopping Normal, the Benet offense found a groove that saw Dosen eclipse the 150-yard mark for the second-straight playoff game.

Quarterback Jack Sznajder and McEachern hooked up twice on touchdowns.

“There are so many different guys that have stepped up this year,” Dosen said. “We had a great game plan coming in and they had us prepared well. The offensive line played great and opened up some awesome holes.

Eagle football shuts down Concordia The Benedictine University football team shut down Concordia University Chicago 47-3 on senior day, scoring the final 40 points.

Benedictine turned the ball over on the opening drive of the game but forced a punt. Taking over at the eight-yardline, Benedictine marched 92 yards on 10 plays in 4:46 to open a 7-0 lead.

Derrick Miles scored on an eightyard run with 5:43 left in the first to open the scoring.

Concordia Chicago followed with a lengthy drive, ticking off over eight minutes in a 19-play drive to kick a field goal and claw within 7-3. Benedictine would score the final 40 points of the game to run away. JaVon McBride returned the ensuing kickoff 77 yards and scooted into the endzone from three yards out four plays later to make the score 14-3 with 5:52 remaining in the

first half.

Following a three-and-out, Jesse Kilbourn reeled in a 23yard pass from Ryan Sample to extend the lead to 20-3 with 2:45 left in the second quarter. The touchdown enabled Sample to set the single season record for touchdowns, bettering the mark of 25 set by Preston Earl in 2010.

Connor Whitman intercepted a pass just before the half, setting up another rushing touchdown from McBride to make the score 26-3 at the half.

Elijah Walker broke free for a 47-yard touchdown catch on the first Benedictine possession of the second half. Benedictine forced a pair of turnovers to stretch the lead to 40-3 on a 22yard pass from Sample to Paul Gray. The touchdown marked the 48th career passing score for Sample, breaking the career mark of Hall of Famer Ed Smith.

Benedictine was able to use virtually the entire roster in the game and scored one final time on a 37-yard interception return from Mark Hammond late in the fourth quarter.

Benedictine racked up 414 yards on 64 plays while limiting Concordia Chicago to just 260, the fewest yards allowed this season. Concordia Chicago running back Lance Moise, the top rusher in the conference, was limited to just 18 yards on 13 carries.

Benedictine used a balance of 192 yards rushing and 222 yards passing.

Sample completed 13 passes for 207 yards with three touchdowns. Ten different receivers caught passes in the game led by four from Kilbourn. Miles ran for 76 yards. 33 individuals posted tackles in the game led by 11 from Maison Bittner. Jarrett Lecas finished with eight tack-

les and an interception. Scottie Bobeck also posted eight stops.

Brad Nolan punted four times with a long of 54 and placed two inside the 20.

Benedictine (6-3, 4-1 NACC) closes the season next Saturday at Aurora with an opportunity to claim at least a share of the conference championship.

MEN’S SOCCER The Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference has released the postseason awards for men’s soccer and as a record-setting season continues, Benedictine University was well represented.

Junior Nick Kapetanos was named as the Offensive Player of the Year. Kapetanos eclipsed the 50-goal and 100-point marker for his career during a season which saw 24 goals in the regular season, most in the conference. Kapetanos ranks third in the nation

in goals and points while leading the nation in game-winning goals. Kapetanos was also recently tabbed as a CoSIDA AcademicAll-District selection and earned a slot on the all-conference first team. Kapetanos ranks second all-time in conference history in goals and was chosen as a first team performer for a third straight season. The Norridge, Ill. native also owns seven assists.

Santiago Beltran and Eric Lukitsh joined Kapetanos with first team honors. Beltran leads the team with eight assists from the midfield, tied for sixth in the conference. Lukitsh, a senior, helps lead a back line that produced seven shutouts on the season.

Locals succeed at state The Downers Grove North boys cross country team placed second at the state finals with 116 points, behind Neuqua Valley’s 83 points.

North’s Alec Danner was 12th in a time of 14 minutes, 37 seconds.

Jacob Ridderhoff was 15th in 14:39, while Matt Moravec was 31st in 14:53, Andrew Marek was 44th in 15:00 and Ryan Birkmeier was 46th in 15:00.

On the girls side, Downers Grove South placed fourth with 245 points.

Brenna Cohoon was 38th in 17:36, Katie Stapleton was 17:53, Melissa Weidner was 63rd in 17:57, Becky Versaskas was 67th in 18:01 and Erin Reidy was 73rd in 18:04.

In Class 1A, the Westmont girls finished 23rd place with 468 points.

Halle Nash led the Sentinels finishing in 58th place with a time of 18:56.

Lily Arndt finished 122nd with a career best time of 20:08. Lisa Niemiec was 127th, also with a career best time of 20:12.

Peyton Nash was 141st with a season best time of 20:24. Frankie Fabry finished 186th in 21:44 and Ashley Eiermann was 204th with a career best time of 23:10.

“I was really impressed with how well the girls ran,” said coach Steve Wolf. “They were confident and poised the whole weekend.

We had hoped to finish a little higher but the competition was very tough despite our best efforts.”

In the boys race Matt Gedraitis finished in 62nd place with a career best time of 16:05 in his first IHSA State meet.

“Matt did an outstanding job for his first time running at the State meet,” Wolf said. “As an individual qualifier he was running without the help of his teammates.”

That earned Benet (21-2-2), which was making its third state finals appearance, its third state trophy. The Redwings won Class A state titles in 2000 and 2001.

“I thought they responded well,” Benet coach Sean Wesley said. “Obviously everybody’s heart was set on playing the championship game.

“I thought they came out as well as we possibly could have and we got contributions from everybody. It was awesome to see so many guys get into this game and to have the success that we had.”

Wesley said before the season that this team was the deepest he has coached in his seven-year tenure at Benet. The Redwings proved him right.

After a 3-0 loss to Fremd in the second game of the season, the Redwings went on a 21-game unbeaten streak and took a 15game winning streak into Friday’s semifinal against Latin.

But All-State defender Bennett Curtis had to leave midway through the first half with what turned out to be a broken foot.

The loss of the DePauw-bound senior was a huge blow.

The Redwings held Latin, which defeated Mount Carmel 3-1 in the championship game, scoreless until Ike Baldwin

“Coach New always says that we can lose to any team, but we can beat any team,” McEachern said. “We never want to underestimate anyone and we have respect for everyone, but we are also confident that we can beat anyone at the same time.”

But Curtis, an inspirational leader who beat cancer two years ago and is known for his extensive charity work, was proud of how the Redwings triumphed without him against Jacksonville.

“I could not be more proud of my guys and just the way they rallied together,” Curtis said.

“They came out today with the mindset that we were going to end the season on a win, we were going to end it on a high note.

That’s exactly what we did.”

Curtis was one of the few Redwings who did not see action Saturday. He originally injured his foot in Benet’s 1-0 sectional final win over Fenton and played through pain as the Redwings edged Quincy Notre Dame in the supersectional.

“Obviously I don’t think that helped a lot and then last night obviously kind of sealed the deal,” said Curtis, who limped off

Friday after hearing a popping noise. “(Playing through pain) was my mindset.

“There was no way I was coming out because this is the (game that could get us to the) state championship and this is the game you dream about playing in since you were a little kid.”

The example Curtis set was a huge inspiration to the Redwings, who had even more incentive to beat Jacksonville.

“It was huge because he’s put in so much work this entire year,” Kelly said. “For him to be out some of the biggest games of our entire season, I think it really gave us energy to push for him and for all of us who want to go as far as we can. We put it all on the field.”

While Benet graduates six starters, including Curtis and 24-goal scorer Kelly, the team returns several talented youngsters. Sophomore forward Franklin Rutkowski had 19 goals and 17 assists, juniors Tomecek and goalkeeper Brian Gould and freshman midfielder Nick Renfro hope to keep the tradition going.

“It’s huge for our underclassmen to have a season like this where everyone gives 100 percent all of the time and everyone pushes each other to be better,” Kelly said. “To go this far as a result of our hard work is a huge legacy for everyone.”

Downers Grove North freshman selected for Illinois All-State Musical Freshman Miles Teague AllState company production of “Sweeney Todd” Downers Grove North High School freshman Miles Teague has been named a member of the Illinois High School Theatre Festival’s All-State company production of “Sweeney Todd.”

Teague, a French horn player, was selected through a rigorous audition process to join 37 students from across Illinois as an instrumentalist in the 2017 All State Musical Pit Orchestra.

“This is quite an honor for Miles, to be chosen as a freshman,” Janice Schwarze, principal of North High, said. “We congratulate him for this terrific achievement.”

Produced by the Illinois Theatre Association, the Illinois High School Theatre Festival is

the largest and oldest non-competitive high school theatre festival in the world. This three-day festival takes place every year in early January, with over 4,000 students, teachers, university representatives, exhibitors and volunteers who come together to put on over 25 different high school productions and over 150 workshops.

The company of the Illinois Theatre Association’s “Sweeney Todd” production consists of 108 high school students from across the state. To be a company member of the annual AllState Production is considered the highest achievement a student may attain in Illinois high school theatre.

“Sweeney Todd” will be presented Jan. 5-7 at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, as a part of the 42nd Annual Illinois High School Theatre Festival.
