Board to vote on placing referendum on ballot Measure, if approved, will allow officials to institute one of two solutions

The Community High School District 99 Board of Education will vote in December on a measure putting a referendum on the March 2018 ballot concerning a potential bond issuance to pay for facility improvements.

The measure, if approved, will allow officials to institute one of two solutions: to increase taxes over a 24-year period to pursue $136.6 million in upgrades or maintain current funding levels to seek an $81.6 million proposal outlining improvements.

If not, the district’s two high schools would not see taxpayerbacked reinvestment, and the result is a decrease in taxes of $132 per year for a $300,000 home.

District 99 recently hosted a series of community informational meetings and building tours, at which point residents had the opportunity to learn more about the situation the two high schools are facing.

Superintendent Hank Thiele said the district is at a “pivot

point.”

Currently, the district has a 20year bond issue that is nearly paid off. What’s more is that history shows interest rates are at nearrecord lows.

The district intends to take action in a manner that reduces the resulting impact on the taxpayers.

“What we have is an opportunity now to reissue those bonds or reissue those bonds plus some more and take on building plans, building projects,” Thiele said.

Renovations at the two high schools could consist of security enhancements, Americans with Disabilities Act improvements, air conditioning, updates to classrooms and science, culinary and visual arts labs, creation of a learning commons, and outdoor enhancements.

Other proposed upgrades specific to South High include the expansion and improvement of the auditorium, outdoor physical education space, and the relocation of the main entrance, whereas potential renovations exclusive to North High consist of the relocation of the loading dock, replacement of the original gym, and ex-

“We have some different facility offerings on each side of town, based on the history of how the buildings grew up, that we would like to close those gaps,” Thiele

said.

The improvements would be phased in over time, with much of the work on the interiors of buildings completed during the summer months. Air conditioning, however, could be available to all

students, faculty and staff before the start of classes next fall.

To date, 35 percent of the district’s classrooms do not have air conditioning.

Olsen files for re-election in House D.81 David S. Olsen (R-Downers Grove) will run for a second full two-year term in the Illinois General Assembly State Representative David S. Olsen (R-Downers Grove) filed his nominating paperwork with the State Board of Elections Monday, Nov. 27, to run for a second full two-year term in the Illinois General Assembly.

“This is just the first step in our team effort to continue to effectively represent the people of the 81st District in Springfield,” said Olsen, who previously served as Downers Grove Mayor Pro Tem and College of DuPage Vice Chairman. “I’m excited to keep working to serve local residents and push for further reform in

State government.”

Olsen was one of the first candidates in line to file his paperwork, which was compiled by 61 volunteer petition circulators and included more than 1,500 signatures – the maximum number allowed by the Board and triple the minimum required to qualify for ballot access. From early September to the end of November, signed support was gathered in both DuPage and Will Counties and in all seven municipalities and unincorporated areas within the 81st House District.

“I couldn’t be more honored to have such strong grassroots backing of our campaign,” Olsen

said. “The outpouring of support from women and men across our district is humbling and makes

The filing of nominating papers will ensure Olsen appears on the ballot for State Representative at the Republican Primary Election to be held on Tuesday, March 20.

Since July 2016, Olsen has served as State Representative for the 81st House District, which includes all or parts of Downers Grove, Woodridge, Naperville, Darien, Westmont, Lisle, Bolingbrook, and surrounding unincorporated areas in DuPage and Will Counties.

Bonfield Express fills streets of downtown More than 6,200 take part in anual Thanksgiving Day race The chilly morning air couldn’t dampen the community spirit in Downers Grove this Thanksgiving as runners and walkers gathered early on the downtown streets and sidewalks to participate in the 14th Annual Bonfield Express 5K. One of the most popular years ever, the race attracted 6,260 registrants.

The top male finishers in the 2017 Bonfield Express 5K were: 1) Jeremy Craven of Downers Grove, 2) Brett Lustgarten of Carol Stream, and 3) Aaron Silver of Phoenix. The top female finishers were 1) Abigail Lopez of Summit Argo, 2) Alyssa Poremba of Chicago, and 3) Kyleigh Spearing of Frankfort.

One of the largest annual events held in Downers Grove, the race is now a Thanksgiving morning tradition in this charming western suburb.

The USATF certified course winds its way through the downtown streets and scenic side roads of Downers Grove.

Area high school students are heavily involved in the race, some as race participants and others who lend their support as

ing while Jo’s Corner, a Downers Grove North combo, greeted racers as they crossed the finish line. Race participants socialized at a post-race party held in the Downers Grove Parking Garage immediately following the race.

The event featured complimentary fruit, water and protein bars provided by Fresh Thyme Farmer’s Market of Downers Grove and coffee provided by Peet’s Coffee & Tea. The race began in 2004 to honor the memory of Downers Grove

South father, teacher, dean and coach Jim Bonfield. Funds generated through the race provide scholarship assistance to select students who reflect his personal example of character, commitment and love of community.

Since 2004, the Bonfield Express Foundation has distributed more than $400,000 in scholarships to 182 west suburban seniors attending high school at Downers Grove North, Downers Grove South, Hinsdale Central, Hinsdale South, Lisle, and

Westmont High Schools. In recent years, the Bonfield Express Foundation has also donated $1,000 to each of the 20 schools in Downers Grove District 58 and Woodridge District 68 to recognize students who demonstrate a love of learning, and exhibit extra effort and/or good citizenship.

The Bonfield Express Foundation also supports Community District 99’s Special Services Department’s multi-needs program with a $10,000 donation to recognize student love of learning.

The Holiday Spectacular is a showcase of SEASPAR participants with disabilities’ talents in various arts such as song, music, dance, and theatre.

Most of the performers hone their skills in SEASPAR’s year-

round programming that includes voice and instrument lessons as well as dance and drama groups.

No tickets are necessary for this free, all-ages event that will leave attendees inspired and filled with holiday spirit!

IDOT, ISP, Tollway urge motorists to prepare for winter driving Motorists should practice basic winter driving skills and build extra time into their schedules As bitter cold creeps into Illinois, the state’s frontline weather responders remind motorists that preparation can help take the bite out of winter this season. The Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police and the Illinois Tollway encourage motorists to prepare for wintry driving conditions and remember: “Winter Weather - Get it Together.”

“Winter weather can be unpredictable in Illinois, but preparation today will make a safer tomorrow,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Randy Blankenhorn. “Drivers should start easing into those winter driving behaviors now. Our snow-and-ice teams are ready, as always, to make this a safe, successful winter driving season.”

Throughout the winter, especially during adverse conditions, motorists should practice basic winter driving skills and build extra time into their schedules. As part of the “Winter Weather - Get it Together” campaign, all travelers are encouraged to follow these simple rules and tips during the coming months: Always wear a seat belt. It’s the law in Illinois.

• Slow down. Slower speeds, slower acceleration, slower steering and slower braking all are required in winter driving conditions.

• Drop it and drive. Put down the handheld devices - it, too, is the law in Illinois.

• Don’t crowd the plow. A snowplow operator’s field of vision is restricted. You may see them, but they may not see you.

• Avoid using cruise control in snow and ice.

• Watch out for black ice on roads that appear clear but can be treacherous.

• Be especially careful approaching intersections, ramps, bridges and shady areas. All are prone to icing.

• Do not travel during bad

weather unless absolutely necessary. If you do have to make a trip, check the forecast and make sure someone is aware of your travel route.

Consider taking public transportation if it is an option.

• Prepare an emergency kit that contains jumper cables, flares or reflectors, windshield washer fluid, a small ice scraper, traction material, blankets, non-perishable food and a first-aid kit.

• Carry a cell phone and a car charger in case of emergency.

• Follow Scott’s Law. Slow down and move over for stopped emergency, construction and maintenance vehicles.

“Winter weather causes extremely dangerous driving with black ice and white out conditions,” said ISP Director Leo P. Schmitz. “Plan ahead by checking your windshield wipers, vehicle fluid levels, proper tire inflation and tread depth. Remember to avoid unnecessary lane changes and as always, reduce your speed and increase following distances. Don’t crowd the plow. Give them room to work. A snowplow operator’s field of vision is restricted. You may see them, but they may not see you.”

Before leaving the house, drivers are encouraged to check GettingAroundIllinois.com for continually updated information on winter road conditions, weather radars, road and bridge closures and other trafficrelated information. The site was recently redesigned in a mobilefriendly format providing a more

convenient way to access important information quickly. The winter road conditions map gives travelers the ability to zoom in to their location, travel route or destination and get real-time road conditions. At any time, motorists can check travel conditions by calling 1-800-452-IDOT (4368) or 1-800-TOLL-FYI. “Winter weather can make driving challenging for our customers, so our priorities are to keep the roads clear and provide roadway information to help drivers safely reach their destinations,” said Illinois Tollway Executive Director Greg Bedalov. “In return, we ask our customers to protect themselves and our workers by slowing down and increasing their distance from other vehicles, particularly during storms and severe weather.”

For the upcoming winter, IDOT will have more than 1,700 trucks available for deployment to plow almost 16,000 miles of roads statewide, the equivalent of driving from Springfield to the tip of South America and back. Last year, IDOT spread almost 305,000 tons of salt statewide. This winter, salt domes throughout the state are at capacity, with more than 550,000 tons on hand. Four hundred brand-new snow plows are ready to be deployed throughout the state.

The new trucks are more energy efficient and will reduce air pollution.

The Illinois Tollway is prepared to deploy its fleet of 196 snowplows for winter storms and has stockpiled more than 87,000 tons of salt to keep its 294-mile system of five tollways clear and safe for its 1.6 million daily drivers.

The Lisle-Woodridge Fire Protection District will be moving forward with a “Safety Challenge” as well as help support staff to visit local schools educating students on public safety thanks to a grant from Illinois American Water (IAW).

The IAW 2017 Firefighter Grant Program provides financial assistance to fire and emergency organizations serving communities in its service areas. This year, approximately $75,000 will be awarded

to 78 Illinois fire departments.

Since the program was created in 2010, over 425 grants totaling over $417,000 has been awarded.

“We are proud to partner with our local firefighters. Illinois American Water tests and operates every fire hydrant annually. We also maintain all of the hydrants, over 29,000 across the state, in our service areas. We know the critical role water plays in protecting homes and businesses and we also know

resources for our local heroes often runs short. Through this grant program, we are able to partner on another level and further support our local heroes,” said Bruce Hauk, Illinois American Water President.

Illinois American Water’s Firefighter Grant Program awards grants to provide personal protective gear, communications equipment, firefighting tools, water handling equipment, training materials and classroom programs.

“On behalf of the Lisle-Woodridge Fire Protection District I would like to thank Illinois American Water for awarding us a grant through your Firefighter Grant Program,” said Fire Chief Keith Krestan during the check presentation.

“This award will enable our department to help combat the epidemic of non-functioning or non-existent smoke alarms in single family homes. It will allow us the ability to reach out to our community and achieve our goal to bring peace of mind to our first responders and the residents they serve knowing they have the warning they need in an emergency.

Ensuring our residents have early warning in an emergent situation will make it safer not only for those that we protect, but also our firefighters. We are grateful that Illinois American Water has this program.”

Currently, 627,281 permanent disability placards and 51,416 disability license plates are registered in Illinois.

DuPage Care Center seeking donations for residents This holiday season, donors can simply click a button and brighten the holidays for DuPage Care Center residents.

Care Center staff and residents created a new Amazon Wish List which offers a variety of different items the residents wish for this holiday season.

The list builds upon the success of the Care Center’s annual Adopt-A-Resident program, which provides donors with individuals’ wish lists for the holidays. This year, all the participating residents have been matched with donors.

“When we reached out to those who donated to the Adopt-A-Resident program last year, we got a tremendous response, and we were able to find donations for all our residents on that list,” said Health and Human Services Chairman Bob Larsen. “We wanted to provide another opportunity for anyone else who may be interested in donating.”

Benet Academy advanced to the IHSA Class 7A state semifinal game for the second-straight season this year and after suffering injuries on the offensive side of the football all season, it was the defense that really stepped up and helped carry the Redwings.

The Benet defense allowed only 17.5 points per game this season, including five games holing teams to less than 14 points and a pair of shutouts – including a blanking of No. 1 seed Rockton Hononegah on the playoffs.

At the center of that defense was senior Devin Petersen, who posted 167 tackles on the season, including 54 solo tackles.

He had 12 tackles for loss, two sacks, four forced fumbles and one interception.

For his efforts, Petersen is the 2017 Voyager Media Defensive Player of the Year.

“I consider him the heart and soul of our defense,” said Benet coach Pat New. “He is one of our hardest workers and we hate losing him because kids like that only come around one in a while. He has great football IQ, he loves the game and he is your prototypical middle linebacker.”

Like all team players, Petersen shined the light on his teammates for his success.

“I was very happy with how I played this year. My goal was to play better than I did last season and I think I accomplished that,” he said. “But all together, it was everyone and every single person helped. You can give the credit to certain people but everyone did their job and got us to where we are at.”

And while Benet fell short of the ultimate goal of playing in a state title game two years in a row, Petersen knows what being in the final four back to back seasons means.

“Coach New was talking and one of the things he said that hit me the most was that we left a legacy that is going to make Benet more well-known and we are happy with that,” he said.

“We have to look back and be proud of what we have done.”

Petersen is still looking at options for next season, but will play football on the college level.

The 5-foot-9, 173-pound running back has committed to play for Northern Illinois next season.

This year he put up 1,626 yards on 182 carries and 24 touchdowns and never fumbled the football.

He tacked on 31 receptions for 350 yards and five scores.

For his efforts, Kokosioulis is the 2017 Voyager Media Offensive Player of the Year.

“I looked at it as a compliment that teams tried to stop me,” Kokosioulis said. “It really helped us as a team if the opponent was trying to stop the run, it would open the passing game and then we could go back to the run. It was fun to be versatile and to be able to get the ball in the run game and pass game.”

For his career, Kokosioulis passed 2009 Voyager Media Player of the Year Matt Perez for school records with 3,952 yards rushing and 58 touchdowns as well as racking up 6,351 all-purpose yards and 73 total scores. “(Perez) was awesome and we watched his highlights and to be able to pass him meant something a lot for me,” Kokosioulis said. “I couldn’t have had any of these records without my team.

Not only did the line block for me, but the receivers blocked for me once I was past the line.

I hope there is a kid out there watching me and trying to be as good or better than me – that would be great. Coach (David) Inserra talks all the time that we have to play for the people that came before us, playing now and the ones that are going to come. So, it is cool if someone out there looks up to me and wants to pass me.”

Inserra said it was not only his talent that helped Kokosioulis get to where he got in the pro-

gram record books.

“He not only holds all the records, but he may hold the record for showing up and giving 100 percent every single day,” said Inserra. “He is the toughest competitor and never took a short cut and that is why he has those records. He has never in his life taken a short cut and that says a lot about him and his family.

“At his size, he takes a pounding and he has never missed a day of practice and never missed a play and that is what I am most proud of Fotis for.”

JAXON AUBRY JOLIET WEST Junior quarterback completed 130 of 228 pass attempts this season for 2,001 yards and 15 touchdowns.

JACK BENISH BENET Defensive end tallied 97 tackles, 26 solo and 25 tackles for loss. He posted 13 sacks, 15 hurries, forved four fumbles and intercepted one pass.

MAX CHRISTIANO MINOOKA Offensively, he caught 19 passes for 272 yards and a teambest five touchdowns. On defense, he posted 48 total tackles with one interception. Also returned kicks.

“He is the QB of the defense,” said Minooka coach Terry McCombs. “He will be a scholarship player.”

JACK ESCHENBACH BENET Prime target in the Benet pass attack, he hauled in 44 passes for 710 yards and five touchdowns.

OMARI FERGUSON JOLIET WEST Favorite target of Aubry, the senior wide receiver hauled in 34 passes for 861 yards and 10 TDs.

TY GAVIN NOTRE DAME The do-it-all junior was the Dons top player, never leaving the field. He played offense, de-

fense and all special teams.

His bread and butter was as a running back, where he rushed for 1,217 yards and 19 touchdowns. He also had 23 catches for 305 yards four scores. Overall he posted 1,522 yards from scrimmage and 23 TDs. Gavin was the MVP of the East Suburban Catholic Conference.

TOM GUSTAFSON PLAINFIELD CENTRAL On defense, he posted 118 tackles, two sacks, 14 tackles for loss, one interception, forced one fumble and recovered two and scored one defensive TD. On the offensive side of the ball, he had 30 Carries for 137 yards and four rushing touchdowns, along with nine catches for 112 yards and two scores.

“Tommy was our team captain and truly the center of the success we were able to have this past season,” said Central coach Jon Pereiro. “He is an incredible football player who plays with passion and toughness not seen often.”

“He is a physical, downhill runner who punishes tacklers,” said JCA coach Jake Jaworski. “Also led the way for Ke’von (Johnson) as a lead blocker.”

Senior quarterback completed 153 of 255 pass attempts for 2,197 yards and 18 touchdowns. He carried the ball 42 times for 354 yards and another score.

Cornerback tallied 23.5 total tackles, forced one fumble, had four pass break ups and blocked three kicks.

He also had three interceptions – all of which were returned for touchdowns of 36, 44 and 55 yards.

On offense he hauled in 28 passes for 366 yards and four TDs and added on a pair of rushing scores.

On defense, contributed 99 total tackles, including 54 solo – both team highs. He had five pass break ups and forced a pair of fumbles.

On defense, he posted 18 tackles, three for loss, and recorded a pair of sacks.

“He will be the best linemen in the state his senior year,” Inserra said. “He has a 4.30 GPA. He is a very special player.”

Senior completed 92 of 148 for 1,577 yards on the season to go along with 15 touchdowns.

CAM STACY MAINE SOUTH

Played both sides of the ball for the Indians.

On offense, he caught 21 passes for a team-high 375 yards and one TD. Defensively, he posted 41 tackles with four interceptions and one touchdown.

As a wide receiver, the senior caught 48 passes for 792 yards and 12 TDs. As a free safety, he posted 61 tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery.

Was named all CSL. He currently has a preferred walk-on offer at Illinois and full ride to Moorehead State.

“He is a true difference maker,” Inserra said.

He led a defense that played 15 straight quarters of shutout football and was the unanimous choice for West Suburban Conference Gold Defensive Player of the Year and was the DGS MVP. “Sergio is one of the most dominant defensive linemen we have had at South in the last 15 years,” said South coach Mark Molinari. “His combination of speed, leverage, and hands made him unstoppable.”

DEREK WENTWORTH MINOOKA Junior offensive tackle helped the Minooka offense run and had a season-saving touchdown on a tackle lateral play in the playoffs.

“He will be a scholarship player in college next fall,” McCombs said.

Law school grad can pay off his own debts You shouldn’t feel as if you’re obligated to continue making these payments DEAR DAVE, Our son is about to graduate from law school. He took out a loan to cover the cost, but we’ve always been debt-free and have been paying on it to help him out while he finishes his studies. The balance on the loan right now is around $30,000. He has a job waiting for him after he graduates, so we’re thinking about telling him it will be his responsibility to finish paying off the loan at that point. Is that wrong?

PAT DEAR PAT, There’s absolutely nothing wrong with a young law school graduate earning a living and paying off his own debt. I hope he appreciates how generous you both have been, but you shouldn’t feel as if you’re obligated to continue making these payments after he finishes school and begins working.

Now, if you decide to pay it off for him as a gift for successfully completing law school — and you’re in a financial position to

do so without hurting yourselves or your future — that’s fine, too. It would be another incredibly generous act. And in my mind, generosity of that magnitude should be met with gratitude and appreciation of equal measure.

If you choose this route, let him know how and why you were able to give him this gift. Don’t hold it over his head or beat him up with it, but stress the importance of being wise with money, saving and investing, and staying out of debt in the future. Let him know if he’ll follow your example, he might be able to do the same kind of thing for his kids someday. That would be a wonderful thing to see, wouldn’t it?

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, I know you advise most people to buy used cars. Do you have a rule of thumb for a mileage limit when it comes to buying a used vehicle?

PAUL DEAR PAUL, No, not really. Sometimes mileage alone can be a good indicator of the quality of a used vehicle, but that’s not always the case. I would also advise doing a little research, and maybe letting a trusted mechanic have a look to determine if there are any issues that might give you trouble soon.

The more inexpensive, and cheaply made a car is, the more likely it becomes that it would be worn down by higher mileage. Some vehicles start to get a little ragged at 100,000 miles, while others — some of the better makes — are just getting a feel for the road at that point. Of course, a lot depends on your budget, too.
