District partners to construct important link 150-ft. trail in Cornerstone Lakes Park in West Chicago will connect to a new 1.2-mile trail at Dunham The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County is moving forward with plans to build a multipurpose trail connecting Dunham Forest Preserve in Wayne to Cornerstone Lakes Park in West Chicago.

The District has signed an intergovernmental agreement with the West Chicago Park District so the Forest Preserve District can build a 150-foot trail in Cornerstone

The Forest Preserve District received a $1.3 million grant from the Illinois Transportation Enhancements Program for the engineering and construction of the lot, trails and overlook and is contributing $479,816 in matching funds.

“It’s very exciting to see this project come to fruition,” said Forest Preserve District Commissioner Al Murphy, District 6.

“This project will provide the first public access to the 378-acre Dunham Forest Preserve,” said Forest Preserve District of DuPage County President Joe Cantore.

“We’re thrilled to see this project move forward.”

The new trail will use existing trails in Cornerstone Lakes Park to extend the DuPage Technology Corridor trail, a north-south trail in far western DuPage County that will link the Elgin and Batavia spur branches of the Illinois Prairie Path upon completion.

In addition to the trail and public spaces, the Forest Preserve District is creating 212 acres of prairies and wetlands at Dunham, including 135 acres of prairie funded by the Wayne Area Conservancy, 11 acres of wetlands mitigated by CN, and 27 acres of wetlands funded by DuPage County Stormwater Management.

After District crews seeded in the native wetland species last winter, they began intensive maintenance of the wetlands to ensure the restoration meets ecological goals, including hydrology and vegetative quality.

To create the new wetlands, the District will rehydrate the soil, in part by disabling drain tiles buried in former agricultural fields. With the return of natural hydrology to the preserve, the District will then

be able to seed the area with native wetland plants.

Returning the land to prairies will improve ecological health and help with flood water storage. One acre of wetland can hold up to 1.5 million gallons of stormwater, trap pollutants carried in the water before they reach underground reservoirs, and provide irreplaceable habitat for hundreds of species of native plants and animals.

Since 2008 the Wayne Area Conservancy has helped the District fund, install and maintain more than 150 species of flowers and grasses on more than 135 acres of native short-grass prairie.

District seeks members for advisory council District 99 is currently collecting applications for a Community Advisory Council. The council will be led by superintendent Hank Thistle and comprised of parents and community members. The purpose of the Council is to foster a strong and positive connection between the School District and the community. The Council will meet four times throughout the school year for a two-hour meeting and will be comprised of 12 to 18 people who have a vested interest in the success of District 99 students and an interest in sharing their experiences with others in the community. WOODRIDGE 68 TEACHER A HERO IN THE CLASSROOM Cheryl Duffy, first grade teacher at Meadowview Elementary School in Woodridge School District 68, was presented with the Symetra Heroes in the Classroom award.

She has been selected by the Chicago Bears from hundreds of other nominations to receive this award, only 16 teachers from the Chicago-area per football season are selected. She was surprised in her classroom with the award and recognition she deserves. Duffy was nominated by a former student as a teacher who makes a real difference in students’ lives, goes above and beyond in her day-to-day responsibilities, and helps students build life skills. She was was presented with her own personalized Bears jersey and other prizes She will be recognized at the November 27 Bears home game against the Tennessee Titans. She received two tickets to the game and VIP sideline access to the field during warm-ups to meet the players. Cheryl will be recognized on the video board during the first quarter.

“I am so shocked and honored about this award,” said Duffy. “It is an unbelievable thrill that I am still trying to absorb. I feel so lucky to know that I have had a touching and lasting impact on a student. When it is all said and done, academics are important but creating those life-touching memories and relationships is what life is all

about.”

As part of the award, she will also receive a $1,000 donation to the school for use in her classroom.

LEARN ABOUT BEING A BOARD MEMBER NOV. 29 On Tue., Nov. 29, District 99 will hold an informational session, “What it Means to be a Board Member.” All community members interested in learning more about how our schools are governed are invited to attend. The session will be held at the Administrative Service Center, 6301 Springside Avenue in Downers Grove, at 7 p.m.

“Effective school boards are vital to the ongoing success of our schools,” says Dr. Hank Thiele, superintendent. “We hope to educate more people about the role and expectations of board members, and maybe inspire some to participate in the process.”

WARNKE MOVES IN TO TOP SPOT AT JEFFERSON At the regular meeting held on Nov. 14, the Woodridge School District 68 Board of Education unanimously appointed Justin Warnke as the new principal of Thomas Jefferson Junior High School, effective July 1, 2017. Warnke will take over for Principal Dr. Bill Schmidt who is moving to the district office as Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources.

Warnke has 12 years of experience in education and has been the associate principal at Thomas Jefferson Junior High since joining Woodridge 68 in 2011. Prior to joining the district, he was the assistant principal at George Washington Middle School in Lyons School District 103. He began his career as a physical education teacher moving into administration after for five years. Warnke gained additional administrative-level experience as an intern while at Addison Elementary School District 4.

He has a Master in Educational Leadership from Concordia University and a Bachelor of Science in Education from Illinois State University.

“We are excited for Justin Warnke to be the next principal of Thomas Jefferson Junior High. It has been great to see his professional growth in the district,” said Dr. Cathy Skinner, Woodridge 68 Superintendent of Schools. “We are fortunate to have such talent in Woodridge 68 that we are able to promote from within.”

Get suggestions on a good book Dec. 4 Bookology — the science of good books — is the Downer’s Grove Public Library’s newest reader advisory service. Now in the second year of the program, DGPL stated in a release, the library has a new batch of expert staff Bookologists on hand and it’s time for a book fair.

Last year’s Bookology Fair, which was also the first, drew 300 people. At the fair, Bookologists shared their favorite reads with the community and hand-

ed out free adult titles to attendees. This year the fair is more family-oriented — Bookologists will also pick favorite children’s titles, which will be up for grabs alongside adult-level books.

The Bookology Fair will take place Sunday, Dec. 4 from 1-3 p.m. in the first floor lobby of the Downers Grove Public Library.

Lessons from Mae: How one woman modeled mental wellness Having lived through the Great Depression as a teenager, Mae was never one to waste anything In this season of reflection and gratitude, I can think of no better person to honor than my grandmother Mae. She embodied good mental health throughout her 97 years on earth, and she did so without even trying. Her lifetime of inspirational habits made for a long and fruitful journey.

Mae grew up in the upper Mississippi River Valley, near the border between Wisconsin and Minnesota. She taught in a one-room grade school until she got married in the early 1950s, at which point state law made it illegal for her to continue teaching.

The assumption at the time was that a woman’s duties should be to her family rather than to a career. Later, when the law changed, she returned to teaching, where she excelled at instilling the rules of English into countless schoolkids in the area.

Mae helped raise five children and a dozen grandchildren, and I was fortunate to spend many memorable times with her and to learn from her example.

LIVE AND LET LIVE One of Mae’s favorite sayings was “To each his own,” a reminder that while we don’t always agree with others, we

actly one thin napkin, folding it back after each meal and pulling it out again at the next one. To her, such habits were not a sacrifice; they were simply a natural extension of her good stewardship.

can still respect them and acknowledge their uniqueness. It is this attitude of tolerance that allowed Mae to feel comfortable with everyone she met.

I remember when the famous wrestler and actor Jesse Ventura was running for governor of Minnesota. Although I sensed Mae didn’t support all of his views, she commented that Minnesotans tended to do their own thing, and she wasn’t surprised by his election. In fact, she seemed to take pride in being from a place where people danced to the beat of a different drummer.

STICK WITH IT Mae had patience in abundance and never complained about her circumstances. She dealt with various physical ailments, bitterly cold Minnesota winters and all the drama that any large family produces. But she did so gracefully, even thriving on challenging times in her life.

Perhaps most importantly, Mae nurtured relationships with others. In an age when I feel bothered to leave a note on Facebook wishing someone a happy birthday, it’s remarkable that until the final months of her life, Mae sent handwritten notes to friends and family across the country. And she did so like clockwork, acknowledging the holidays, birthdays and anniversaries of nearly 100 people.

She made it her business to care about others’ business. Not in a nosey way, but because of her genuine interest and curiosity. Your personal interests were her personal interests. This made Mae a great conversationalist, as well as someone you always knew understood your situation.

Taken together, these simple life lessons made for a remarkable life. I can only hope that I am able to practice these ways of being somewhere close to the degree that Mae did. And in turn, to pass them on to others. My thanksgiving this year is for you, grandma.

Burglaries Sometime between 9 p.m. on Nov. 6 and 2 p.m. on Nov. 7, an unknown person entered an unlocked car on Woodlyn Dr. and stole loose change and a watch valued at $2,000.

A theft occurred at the Sam’s Club on Woodward Ave. Nov. 7 when someone picked up and stole a bag that had been dropped by another shopper.

The bag contained more than $2,000 in cash and has not been returned to the store.

Steven Essenberg, 23, was charged with theft Nov. 7 when he reportedly stole prescription medication from a business on Spring St. He was also charged with possession of a controlled substance.

Between 9:50 and 10:50 a.m.

Nov. 8, someone reported a car break-in in which a criminal had broken a lock on the passenger’s side door to gain entry to the car and stole tools that were valued at $1,400.

A car burglary took place on the 7600 block of Bristol Ln. on Nov. 8 in which someone got into an unlocked car and stole an iPhone worth $100.

Benet falls one win shy of state

Before Benet Academy took the field for its Class 7A state semifinal football game, the Redwings felt good.

“We felt, ‘why not us,’” Benet senior safety Alec McEachern said. “We felt confident and our defense went out and player stellar.”

They did, but the only thing was their opponents defense played better. That was East St. Louis, Sr. which shutout the Redwings 20-0 in a Class 7A state semifinal game on a cold and blustery Saturday afternoon, Nov. 19 at Benedictine University in Lisle.

It was the first time Benet was shutout since a 33-0 loss to last season’s Class 5A state champion - Nazareth Academy, on Oct. 2, 2015. The Redwings (10-3) were making their first semifinal appearance since 2012 and were hoping to become the second squad in school history to advance to a title game. They finished second in Class 4A in 1984.

Instead it is East St. Louis making its 11th state title appearance and first since winning it in 2008.

The Flyers (13-0) will go for their eighth championship this Saturday Nov. 26 at 4 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Champaign against Plainfield North. The Tigers rallied to shock host Fenwick 18-17 in overtime in the other semifinal.

“They are a powerful team and I’m proud of the way our guys battled,” Benet coach Pat New said of the Flyers. “But we weren’t able to execute and you have to be able to run the ball to beat them.”

Running the ball was something that was certainly not in the cards for the Redwings. Including quarterback sacks, they had 13 rushing attempts the netted minus 34 yards. That meant an

almost unreal time of possession disparity where East St. Louis held the ball for 35 minutes and 7 seconds, compared to 12:53 for Benet.

“Yes, they were the best defense we saw this season,” Benet senior quarterback Jack Sznajder said.

“They were fast to the ball and made it tough.”

Still things started well for the Redwings as Sznajder completed 3-of-4 passes to on the games opening drive for 33 yards. Included in that was a 12-yard strike to senior wide receiver Michael Challenger that gave Benet a first down at the East. St. Louis 26. But Challenger was injured with what might have been a broken right hand later in the quarter, and the Redwings turned the ball over on downs at the 28.

“That hurt a lot, that was tough,” Sznajder said of losing Challenger. “Just hopefully he’ll get better.”

McEachern set the tone on defense by popping senior Jeff Thomas for a six yard loss on the Flyers first offensive play. He was in on numerous tackles and had a first quarter interception.

“Our coaches knew a lot of their tendencies, so I was able to come up and make a good hit,” McEachern said of his early lick, which got the cold crowd all fired up. “Then [the interception] was a credit to the D-line and outside linebackers for staying home on the coverage.”

The defense forced a Flyer punt and Benet set up shop at the East St. Louis 31. A pass interference call gave the Redwings a first down at the 16, but they went backward from there. Junior kicker Victor Karam tried a 41-yrd field goal, which had the distance, but was wide right with 7:19 left in the fist quarter.

Four plays later junior Jarrell Anderson (25 carries - 146 yards, 2 TD’s) burst around the left side for a 23-yard TD jaunt. He added the 2-point conversion run for an 8-0 lead with 10 seconds to play in the first quarter.

That remained the score at halftime as the Redwing defense turned back East St. Louis without points twice from inside the 10 in the first half and three times total in the game. The Flyers, however, did score from inside the 10 once.

That was on their second drive of the third quarter, an 80-yard, 10 play march that was capped off on an 8-yard scoring run by Anderson with 2:58 to play in the third. Following an interception, Reyondous Estes hit fellow senior James Knight over the middle on a wide open 32-yard TD pass with 2:04 left in the third quarter to make it 20-0.

Estes was 4-of-10 with an interception for 88 yards and the TD. East St. Louis had 336 total yards compared to 98 for the Redwings.

Sznajder finished 9-of-32 for 132 yards and had two interceptions. He had fourth quarter pass-

es of 45-yards to senior C.J. Birck and 30-yards to junior Nicholas Keyes to help Benet reach the Flyers 12 yard line, but the drive stalled there.

“It’s hard to put into words,” Sznajder said of what the season meant to him. “We had a great group of guys. I’ll just remember all the things we did, all the times we had as a team.”

The 20 points tied a season low for the Flyers.

“I’m proud of the way the defense played, we were tough all year,” New said. “It was the first time in four years we made the semifinals and it was exciting.”

Plainfield Central’s Shook is POY

Four years ago, Ashley Shook came into Plainfield Central as a shy, quiet player with a world of potential.

As she leaves, she does so as a dominant leader and one of the best players to ever play for the Wildcats.

This season, she posted 547 assists, 207 kills, 204 digs and 32 service aces.

For her efforts, Shook is the 2016 Voyager Media Volleyball Player of the Year.

“She has improved every year which is hard to believe from a (6-foot, 2-inch) setter that is big and physical,” said Central coach Erik Vogt. “The big thing is that she has become an extravert this year. She has become an introvert most of her life – she has always been a very quiet kid.

She is very intelligent and works extremely hard, but it is only this year that she has figured out how to get a whole team around her and she has done a great job of getting our program on the right track. No one wants to let her down because of how hard she works.

“She is just a phenomenal kid and I know people say that and I know I have probably said it, but she is the kid that she is the first one I ever let babysit my daughter outside of my family. I trust her 100 percent and her teammates trust her. She has been an instrumental part of our success every year.”

That success has not only come from Shook’s talent, but her willingness to adapt, which was shown this season when she began to set from the middle.

“She played in the middle at the end of the year and she did that because she wanted to win. She said if playing middle helped us win and had the best rotation on the floor, she would be in the middle,” Vogt said.

“She is always thinking about the team and she is one of the most unselfish people you will ever meet.”

Shook feels the move made her a better player.

“Setting from the middle is different and I really like it and I think we have a really cool of-

fense and it gives me flexibility of where I can play and what I can do,” Shook said. “I like it because I can get the perspective of all the players.”

That kind of growth has been something Shook said has come throughout the years.

“I have matured a lot over the years. Freshman year, I was quiet and a scared little freshman, but I have had to become a leader on this team and I have had to do what I could to help this team win,” she said.

In the last two seasons, the Wildcats win a pair of regional titles and advanced to the sectional final both years.

Shook will now take those talents to the University of Texas where she will try to win an NCAA title.

“I loved Texas and I got that gut feeling right away. It is far away, but it is going to be my home away from home and I felt at home there right away,” she said. “The coaching staff is amazing and that they will care about me as a player and a person and help me be a great person even after volleyball. It is also a winning program and I will have a chance to start as a freshman, which is important to me. And of course, I want to win a national championship.”

While Shook strives to be a national champion, Vogt says young players to look to strive to mimic her.

“If I was a fifth or sixth grader playing volleyball for the first time and I saw her play, I would want to be Ashley,” he said.

BROOKLYN BACHMANN MINOOKA The senior setter led the Indians with 993 assists, 180 digs and 26 aces to go with 43 blocks for the Indians, who fell in the three sets to the nation’s No. 1 team in the Class 4A state finals.

“Brooklyn was a fierce leader on the court and we will very much miss her,” said Minooka coach Carrie Prosek. “She would dive through bleachers to keep that ball alive for our offense to hit the ball. She could push the ball to the pin no matter where she was and that is truly what kept us alive when things were off. She took ahold of this young

team and taught them how to be confident and want to win.”

ELENI BALOURDOS NILES WEST The setter for the Wolves’ fourth-place squad posted 845 assists on the season to go with 55 aces and 167 digs.

“Eleni has run our offense for all four years taking the team to one sectional and one final four trip,” said Niles West coach Stacy Metoyer. “She has also been allconference three years and was runner up for player of the conference. Eleni has also received MVP two of her four years.”

She paced the Trojans with 426 kills, 223 digs and 33 aces. She was named to the all-tournament teams at the Wheaton Classic and Waubonsie Warrior Blast and was also named to WSC Silver All-Conference team.

“Clare was clearly one of the state’s most prolific attackers,” said coach Mark Wasik. “Probably what was most impressive is that she made strides in her serve-receive and defense as teams figured out that she was one of our steadiest passers and consequently, teams avoided serving her. I look forward to her continued growth as a leader who will positively impact her team as she grows both physically and emotionally leading up to her senior year.”

EMILY HOLBROOK JOLIET CATHOLIC Sophomore outside hitter tallied 183 kills and 13 aces on the season.

She was Illinois Player of the week for Prep Volleyball, was AllTournament team at the Mizuno Cup Tournament and was firstteam All-Southwest Prairie Conference.

“I believe Ali is the most explosive player in the area,” Prosek said. “She can definitely put the ball away but this year she has really learned to use different shots so defenses had no clue where she was going every time she went up!

“Her defense has improved tremendously since last year and she has the drive to keep getting better and better in all areas of the game.

We ran her out of serve receive out of the middle and right side to keep people wondering where she was going. She is a blast to watch play.”

“Natalia is a sophomore and has started for us the last two years,” Metoyer said. “She led our team in kills this year and won two of the playoff games for us right at the end. She is being recruited by Division-I schools.”

ROCKY PERINAR MINOOKA Junior tallied 330 kills, 67 blocks and 249 digs for the Class 4A runner-up Indians.

“As the season progressed Rocky got stronger and stronger and more confident in herself,” Prosek said. “She turned into a powerhouse and that was the turning point of our season.

“She started taking risks and trusting herself and then she was unstoppable in all aspects

of the game. Not only in her offense but also in her defense.

“She has such a high reach, and quick arm swing teams could not stop her. She is a fun player to watch who really has fun while she is playing”

VERONICA SNELLING BENET Senior outside leads the Redwings in kills this season with 374. She also posted 34 aces, 170 digs, 37 blocks. She will play at Missouri State next year. She was a member of the Wheaton Classic All-Tournament team and the Benet Invite MVP. “She is the best right side attacker in the state,” said coach Brad Baker.

BIANCA TOMUTA NILES WEST Senior posted 414 digs and 34 aces for the state final four team.

“Bianca is a senior libero and

leads our team in digs,” Metoyer said. “Her serving has been the best on the team in the playoffs and she had some key digs for us in close matches.”

KENDALL TUCKER DOWNERS NORTH Tallied 277 digs this season to lead North and was named to the all-tournament team at the Waubonsie Warrior Blast “She is one of our captains and has been a consistent contributor and steadying force for our young team,” coach Mark Wasik said.

FRANCESCA WAGONER LISLE Junior totaled 264 kills and a .186 hitting percentage on the season.

“She was by far the best player in our conference according to all the coaches at our coaches conference meeting,” said Lisle coach Bonnie Pettigrew said.

Remember, when it comes to health insurance, the problem usually isn’t a kidney stone or a trip

to the emergency room for a few stitches. The problem is a cancer diagnosis, which ends up costing $500,000 or more.

You might want to check into an HSA (Health Savings Account) type of plan within the exchanges. Another thing you could look at is one of the medical sharing programs through a Christian organization such as Christian Healthcare Ministries.

But a higher deductible, HSAtype plan might help keep your

premiums down. It’s sad, but this is what Obamacare has done to independent people like you and me who are self-employed. It’s destroying small group plans, and I guess that was their intent. I suppose they wanted to put those companies out of business, so the government could take it over.

Woman to be extradited to DuPage County New Jersey woman has been charged with mailing heroin to a friend in Darien WHEATON – DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced that a New Jersey woman has been charged with mailing heroin to a friend in Darien resulting in a fatal overdose.

On November 1, Judge Daniel Guerin issued a $750,000 arrest warrant for Amanda Guarneri, 24. Guarneri is charged with one count of Drug Induced Homicide (Class X Felony) and one count of Unlawful Delivery of a Controlled Substance (Class 2 Felony) in the

death of 26 year-old Dane Carver, also of New Jersey.

Carver was temporarily staying at an Extended Stay hotel in Darien while in Chicagoland for work.

On August 8, Carver’s co-workers asked hotel staff to perform a wellbeing check when he failed to show up for work.

Upon entering his room, hotel staff found Carver unresponsive and alerted authorities. An investigation by the Darien and Downers Grove Police Departments led to

Guarneri.

It is alleged that at some point in time, Guarneri mailed several packets of heroin laced with fentanyl to Carver.

It is further alleged that Carver ingested the heroin Guarneri mailed to him and died as result of a drug overdose.

“Within the past twenty four hours, my office has filed drug induced homicide charges against three individuals allegedly responsible for two deaths,” Berlin said.

“If that isn’t an epidemic, I don’t know what is. This must end. While we have made progress in reducing heroin deaths in DuPage Coun-

ty through education, prosecution and the DuPage Narcan Program, the death of Mr. Carver reminds us that we still have a lot of work to do to rid our communities of this deadly poison. The cooperation displayed by everyone involved in this very sad case sends the message that regardless of where you are and by what means, if you deal drugs in DuPage County we will find you and we will prosecute you.

I would like to thank the Darien and Downers Grove Police Departments for their thorough investigation into this extremely disheartening case as well as the DEA for their assistance. I would also like

to thank Assistant State’s Attorney Claudia Fantauzzo for her work on this case. I offer my sincere condolences to Mr. Carver’s family and friends as they grieve their loss.”

Guarneri is currently in custody in Suffolk County Jail, New York, awaiting extradition to DuPage County.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt.

The defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Police remind to buckle up for holiday IDOT, ISP Join Forces to Urge Safe Travel, Drive Down Fatalities Historically, Thanksgiving is the busiest travel time of the year, putting more people on the road and increasing the likelihood of crashes.
