Stormwater referendum voted down Republican incumbents carry favor with local, county races Downers Grove residents soundly rejected a change in policy for the way the village funds its stormwater programs, according to unofficial results from the DuPage County Election Commission.

In a nonbinding referendum on the Nov. 8 ballot, voters were asked about the direction of current and future stormwater mitigation efforts and ways to pay for it.

According to the village, Downers Grove will fund its projected $3.9 million in stormwater costs in the 2017 budget through a stormwater utility fee. Staff identified upwards of $42 million in possible stormwater-related capital projects and recommended increasing the amount spent on maintenance each year to $4 million.

Voters approved continuing to fund all costs through the utility fee (65 percent for/35 percent against) and rejected using property taxes or a mixture of the two

with approximately 70 percent against.

REPUBLICANS TAKE HOLD OF COUNTY BOARD A full sweep Nov. 8 gave republican lawmakers complete control over the DuPage County Board, according to unofficial results from the DuPage County Election Commission.

Both of the board’s two Democrats, Tony Michelassi of District 5 and Liz Chaplin of District 2 were ousted by voters.

The remaining race without a Republican incumbent, the fouryear District 4 seat, fell lopsidedly in the lap of former Glen Ellyn trustee and Republican Tim Elliott.

“We worked hard, and we focused on the issues that the voters really cared about – property taxes, reducing spending and mak-

ing government affordable for the people in DuPage County,” Elliott said.

Both Democratic incumbents lost very close races – Chaplin by a scant 161 votes to Republican attorney Richard Blass and Michelassi by just over 3 percent to Janice Anderson.

Former county board member Laurie Nowak also failed in retaking a seat in District 6.

Howland, a Hawthorn Woods resident, is an attorney and College of Lake County trustee. She was elected to a six-year term on the Board of Trustees in April 2009 and was re-elected in April 2015.

The 6th Congressional District covers parts of Cook, DuPage, Lake, Kane and McHenry counties.

Students may register as an individual or with a partner.

If the partners are in two different grade levels, they must follow the rules of the older grade level.

All projects will comprise an exhibit, written report and oral report.

Participants in grades 1-2 will be judged non-competitively and will all receive a participation ribbon.

Students in grades 3-8 may choose to participate competitively or non-competitively.

A team of two judges will objectively rate the Science Fair’s competitive entries on their knowledge of topic, written report and exhibit.

First, second and third place ribbons will be awarded. Seventh and eighth grade projects will be

eligible for the Regional or State Science Fair based on merit.

Parents are encouraged to support their children and ensure they follow instructions correctly.

However, the Science Fair is an independent project, and children are expected to complete all manipulations and measurements for their experiments, and to create all drawings and chart for their boards, without parent help.

Democracy & our very vulnerable future ‘The election season is pure spectacle, full of sound and fury’

BY ROBERT C. KOEHLER TRIBUNE CONTENT AGENCY It was a moment as tiny as marking a ballot - those two minutes of the second debate, when the presidential election hung suspended mid-diatribe and the candidates let go of their opponent’s flaws long enough to honor a bit of common humanity.

No big deal. Yeah, I know.

But as the thing winds down to the day of reckoning, and a sense of lost values and lost democracy overwhelms me - the election season is pure spectacle, full of sound and fury (signifying nothing?) - I find myself going back to those two minutes over and over, trying to understand why they hit me with such force.

The second debate, possibly the ugliest playground fight of the three, was conducted in a “town hall” format, with a preselected audience of independent voters sharing the stage with the candidates, and at intervals an audience member was invited to ask the candidates a question.

The debate was virtually over when moderator Martha Raddatz announced that “we’ve sneaked in one more question” and a man in the audience stood up.

“My question to both of you,” he said, “is, regardless of the current rhetoric, would either of you name one positive thing that you respect in one another?”

What?

The moment seemed almost parental. Maybe in a way it was: a corralling of two out-of-control youngsters into respectable behavior.

In the scant mention I’ve read about it, the question, unsurprisingly, has been dismissed as trite and nicey-nice and irrelevant to the absolutely serious matter of whether Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump should be the next, oh God, president, the leader of the most powerful nation on Earth, yada yada . . .

Nevertheless, there was a palpable, if temporary, change in the dynamic of the situation.

The palpable disgust each candidate exuded, without restraint, toward the other one - the sterile stump blather: “Yo, America, I’m way better than that fool over there” - quieted down. The debate was suddenly unscripted. The moment was live. They were both vulnerable.

Clinton jumped in. “I think that’s a very fair and important question,” she said. “Look, I respect his children. His children are incredibly able and devoted, and I think that says a lot about Donald. I don’t agree with nearly anything else he says or does, but I do respect that. And I think that is something that as a mother and a grandmother is very important to me.”

She went on a little more, reverting to stump-speech mode: “So I believe that this election has become in part so - so conflict-oriented, so intense because there’s a lot at stake. . . .” Etc., etc.

Then Trump answered: “I will say this about Hillary. She doesn’t quit. She doesn’t give up. I respect that. I tell it like it is. She’s a fighter. I disagree with

much of what she’s fighting for. I do disagree with her judgment in many cases.

But she does fight hard, and she doesn’t quit, and she doesn’t give up. And I consider that to be a very good trait.”

And that’s it. As I say, no big deal, except . . . I couldn’t stop thinking about a quote I once heard: You’re as close to God as you are to the person you like the least.

What had just happened stirred awake a different sort of consciousness, or so it seemed.

And it was gone in a moment and had no effect on the outcome of the race or what the next four years will bring or the sport-and-spectacle media coverage that refuses to let up or the actual issues that matter about the nation’s future - war, poverty, racism, environmental exploitation - or, anything else. But still, there it was, a moment of interruption to the national hooting contest, a disruption of the national certainty that hatred fixes so firmly into place.

And I thought about the time, many years ago, when my great nephew Joey was a newborn and I held him for the first time.

“But still,” I later wrote, “this is what I thought, that there was a quality to Joey’s helplessness that seemed more godlike than anything else I had ever encountered. What if, I thought, the nature of God were openness and helplessness? What if destructive power were a human quality, not God’s?”

The point I’m struggling to make, here at the brink of the 2016 election, is that our future is the newborn we hold in our arms, vulnerable and dependent on us and deserving the best.

I quiet my own certainties as I think about this and acknowledge that what I don’t know is infinitely greater than what I do know, or think I do.

And the mark I will make on my ballot is so much smaller than the pledge I make right now, to work for - to nurture - peace no matter who is elected.

Be wary of strangers soliciting for charitable donations. They may attempt to take advantage of people’s generosity during the holidays. Ask for identification, how donated funds are used, if contributions are tax deductible, etc. If you aren’t satisfied with the answers, don’t contribute.

Use only fire resistant ornaments on a holiday tree, and make sure that the Christmas tree lights are in good working order.

Don’t leave the lights on overnight or when you are away from home.

If you have house guests, advise them of your security precautions and make sure they follow them.

SHOPPING Shop before dark if possible.

When shopping at night, go with a friend or family member. Never park in an unlit area or parking lot, no matter how convenient it is.

Pay attention to anyone who appears to be loitering in the parking lot and remain alert at all times.

Thieves will target victims who are distracted or on their cell phones and may even create a distraction themselves to pickpocket or steal.

Benet faces East St. Louis in semis

Benet quarterback Jack Sznajder said he will never forget his 18th birthday.

That’s because Sznajder and his teammates had more to celebrate than just his milestone birthday.

Sznajder completed 26 of 36 passes for 265 yards and a touchdown and Benet’s defense did not allow a point Saturday night as the visiting Redwings upset undefeated Rolling Meadows 15-8 in a Class 7A quarterfinal.

Benet (10-2) will host East St. Louis (12-0) in the semifinals next Saturday at Benedictine University in Lisle.

The Redwings scored the only offensive touchdown when Sznajder found a wide-open Marty Dosen on 20-yard pass up the left sideline at the 5:31 mark of the second quarter to give Benet a 7-0 lead.

“It was a designed wheel route and Marty ran it perfectly,” Sznajder said. “He kind of stopped for a little bit so he could shake off a defender and just made a great play,

got wide open.”

Sznajder had no trouble finding open receivers, but they weren’t all wearing friendly uniforms. He tossed three interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown, and Benet made four turnovers overall.

“If we have any chance of winning next week we’ve got to fix that, that’s for sure,” Benet coach Pat New said.

The Redwings led 10-0 when Rolling Meadows linebacker Kevin Haltman picked off Sznajder and returned it 41 yards for a touchdown. The two-point conversion run was good and the Mustangs (11-1) were within 10-8 with 1:11 left in the third quarter.

Haltman then sacked Sznajder on the first play of the ensuing possession, which ended in a three-and-out. Suddenly, the momentum had swung.

But not for long. Brian Uhlir’s 60-yard punt pinned the Mustangs at their own 2-yard line. Three plays later, Benet’s Brett Kerger sacked Rolling Meadows quarter-

NIU quarterback gets chance to end career how he wants

As the Northern Illinois University football team took on Toledo at the first-ever football game played at the home of the Chicago White Sox – now named Guaranteed Rate Field – it did so with quarterback Anthony Maddie on the sideline in a walking boot.

Maddie had injured his ankle in the game the previous week against Bowling Green, was a game-time decision and tried to go, but was ruled out just before kickoff. He still hopes to return to the field this season in the Huskies’ final two games.

Injured and on the sidelines is unfortunately a position Maddie has found himself in a lot during his days in DeKalb, however, for a five game stint during the mid-

dle of this season, the Plainfield native found himself exactly where he always wanted to be – as a starting quarterback for a Division-I college football team.

Maddie, a fifth-year senior, replaced the injured Drew Hare and led Northern on a 3-2 run.

“It felt great. That first game as a starter was one of the best experiences I have ever had,” Maddie said. “It has been a lot of fun just being the guy and preparing and getting ready to go out and help my team win games as a starter. It is something I have never experienced before.”

As the starter, Maddie completed 105 of 175 passes for 1,213 yards and eight touchdowns. He rushed 82 for 575 yards and another seven scores.

When Hare went down this season, NIU head coach Rod Carey and the Huskies’ coaching

staff decided to go with Maddie over redshirt sophomore Ryan Graham.

“That was big,” Maddie said of the decision. “At times when you are not the starter you wonder how much confidence the guys on the team and the coaching staff have in you, but that was proof that they did have that confidence in me and it’s a good feeling they let me go out there and be the guy.”

Prior to getting the call, Maddie suffered through highs and lows in his football career, including missing out on a chance to start a year ago when Hare went down with an injury.

Maddie had season-ending surgery earlier in the campaign and was not able to step in.

I thought that was my opportunity and I missed out,” Maddie said. “My faith is very important to me and I kept praying and I felt like this is what I was supposed to be doing with my life at the time and I always had faith I would get an opportunity. I never wanted it to be because someone went down, but I had faith that eventually I would have a shot to help my team. I also have a lot of family and friends that have supported me when things weren’t going the way I wanted. When I came into college, it wasn’t what I expected, obviously. It wasn’t what I was hoping for, but when I got down, I had my parents and my family that were always there for me.”

That year he passed for 3,799 yards and 52 touchdowns, while rushing for 1,117 yards and 18 scores on the ground, it was the second most total yardage in a season in IHSA history. He also tallied 404 points that year becoming the only Illinois high school player to ever eclipse 400 points in a season. He was named all-state as well as earning conference and state title game MVP honors.

Maddie’s collegiate career began as a redshirt freshman at Western Michigan University, but he left when the coaching staff changed after this first season.

He had to sit out his first year in DeKalb because of NCAA transfer rules. In 2014, Maddie appeared in nine games as a du-

al-threat quarterback, where he passed for 227 yards and rushed 44 times for 201 yards with one rushing touchdown.

With all that happened in his career, NIU offensive coordinator and former University of St. Francis head coach Mike Uremovich said he was happy for Maddie to get the chance to start.

“I am genuinely happy for him.

To go through what he has gone through, he could have hung it up a few times,” Uremovich said.

“He has earned the opportunity for this. He kept working and he got the opportunity and made the most of the opportunity and that is all you can ask for in life.

He will be successful down the road in whatever he chooses to do because of his work ethic.”

Maddie said giving up football was never an option for him.

“It is hard to quit and just say ‘I’m done’ when you have all these guys that you care about and that care about you. You don’t get this anywhere else. We have 108 guys on this team and

“We had a stunt on and my defensive tackle got me free,” Kerger said of his first varsity safety. “He cleared the guard and the center out and I just came in and made the play.”

Benet’s defense made a lot of plays. The Mustangs came in averaging almost 40 points per game but mustered only 204 yards of offense as the Redwings shut down their running game.

“I think we were kind of nervous coming out of the gates and then we kind of settled down,” Kerger said. “We’ve faced a lot of triple options teams this year. We had

this is something special,” he said. “I have talked to my parents a lot about all of this and they said at the very least I am getting experience for what the real world is like. It is going to be tough out there.”

“I was just trying to figure out a way to play. I just love football,” Maddie said. “Coach Carey and I discussed the best way to get on the field for my senior year.”

Maddie caught one pass on the season for nine yards.

While Maddie has stats in the passing, rushing and receiving game this season for the Huskies, his legacy with NIU may have been established before he got the chance to start under center.

“I hope that I can leave behind in my short time as a starter is that you will get that shot and if you are here, you are here for a reason. A lot of these young guys may not be in the situation they

want to be. It was a long four and a half years,” Maddie said. “The main thing is you have to always have faith. I have a lot of friends that play college football and it is rarely what you hoped for. This has taught me to have faith and keep working hard and eventually you will get a shot and when you do, you have to make the most of it.”

Uremovich said Maddie’s perseverance is something young players can learn from.

“That is the hardest thing for young players. We never want them to be happy where they are at, but to be patient where they are at,” he said. “So many guys expect to come in the door and expect to play as a freshman or a sophomore and that’s great, but it doesn’t always work out that way. We just want them to keep working and they will get a chance.

“Any time a freshman or sophomore comes into the office down about playing time, we can just look to him and tell them to look at what he did.

Did they ever. The Mustangs had three drives snuffed out in the red zone, including one that started at the Benet 25 after a Sznajder interception.

That particular opportunity ended when safety Danny O’Malley picked off a pass in the end zone.

O’Malley made a second interception in fourth quarter and returned it 20 yards to the Rolling Meadows 10. That set up Victor Karam’s second field goal of the game, a 25-yarder that finished the scoring with 6:17 remaining.

“We knew that (the Mustangs were good),” O’Malley said. “Our D-line played amazing, our linebackers played even better and we

just forced them to pass, and then made plays.

“They were mainly a running team so we focused on the run. We all have assignments and we all play assignment football.

While Rolling Meadows fans were left in stunned silence at Benet’s defensive performance, Sznajder has seen it before.

“Doesn’t surprise me,” Sznajder said. “I’d say this is the best defense in the state. They make plays all over the ball and they’re relentless.”

So was Sznajder, who kept tossing the ball even after the pick-6.

“You can never get down on yourself, no matter what’s happening in the game,” he said.

“You’ve just got to have faith in yourself and your teammates and we did a great job of that.

“It just shows that we play through adversity. Our guys, no matter what happens, we’re not going to get down on ourselves.

We just have faith in ourselves that we can make plays all game long.”

Now the Redwings are in the state semifinals for the second time in five seasons and third time in school history. They will be decided underdogs against East St. Louis, but they were against Rolling Meadows.

“We’re excited for the challenge,” Kerger said. “We keep getting better so hopefully we’ll be able to elevate to their play, because they’re pretty good.”
