Series focused on digital literacy Downers Grove library program shines spotlight on news literacy, fake news in this Digital Age

The Downers Grove Public Library held the final program, “News Literacy in a Digital Age,” of its new three-part series on sifting through and interpreting the onslaught of information presented each day in the media, The Sept. 26 presentation and discussion, led by journalist Charlie Meyerson, was meant to inform and spur discussion on the phenomenon.

“We thought this was a timely program series based on the speed in which information is currently being disseminated,” said Melissa Fischer, public relations manager for Downers

Grove Public Library. “We also had librarians visiting different schools to talk about credible resources, so we wanted to expand on that.

Meyerson acknowledged that news media is increasingly challenged in today’s world and said the fake news phenomenon is hoped to pass in time.

“It’s not a thing, it’s an oxymoron,” he said. “If it’s news, then that is a great word. If it’s news, it happened. If it’s fake, it didn’t happen. So, fake news is not really a thing. Not news is a thing.”

A number of libraries have been hosting similar programs since the 2016 election, and the Downers Grove library received multiple requests to do the same.

DGS students selected to lead Special Olympics Conference Downers Grove South High School students Esther Crandell and Andrea Ramirez were selected to join the Youth Activation Committee of the Special Olympics of Illinois (SOILL). Crandell, a junior, and Ramirez, a senior, will work with students across the state to discuss ways to build a unified world, starting in their own schools. The two will also present and help facilitate sessions during the SOILL’s state conference, which will take place in November in Peoria. The focus of the conference is to promote and build inclusion and respect.

“Working with the students who have special needs and helping to create a better school environment for them makes me happy,” says Crandell. She been involved with Special Olympics basketball events, has attended other Special Olympics conferences and has applied for various special education grants. This year, she serves as a student aide and also is student

teaching at O’Neill Middle School in Downers Grove through the “Intro to Teaching” class at DGS. At the conference, the pair will present to over 500 high school and middle school students about the “Respect Campaign” they initiated last year at DGS. They will share how other students can replicate the program at their schools.

“Esther and Andrea have worked closely together in order to bring messages of respect to everyone at DGS,” says Brett Wolf, a physical therapist for District 99 and sponsor. “We are so proud of their hard work and that they will represent our school at this important state conference.”

“This is a wonderful leadership opportunity for both girls,” says Sydney Oswald, a physical therapist for the district who also sponsors the conference efforts. “They are leading by example of their efforts and close friendship, and inspire all of us at DGS every day.”

“My hope is that our student body becomes more unified and welcoming of everyone, not just because it’s a certain club, but because it’s just how we do things,” says Crandell.

Since the launch of Google, people have often found themselves sifting through hundreds and thousands and millions of results to find what they’re looking for.

Library staff members typically serve as a resource to help with that.

“Recently, the bigger question is knowing what’s inside all of those Google results,” Fischer said. “Is the content factual and non-biased? Is it an advertisement or sponsored by a certain individual or company? Is it simply someone’s opinion? This is another area the library can help with.”

Meyerson recognizes there

are positives to giving readers the ability to question what they consume and refuted the idea of restoring faith in news media.

“The word ‘faith’ bothers me,” he said. “I don’t think you should have faith in news media, especially now. I think you should have faith in reporters, faith in news organizations. News media again is a word that means more than one medium, and it takes in television, radio, newspapers.

They all have different agendas, and I think it would be wrong to say, ‘I have faith in the news media.’ I don’t, and I don’t think you should. News media is so big, so all encompassing. It takes in every thing from Fox on the right to Mother Jones on the left and beyond. Some of those organizations may be organizations you want to place your faith in [or] your trust in, and some you may not.”

said she was curious to sit in on the program with all the hoopla and craziness going on in the world.

“It was good to hear [Meyerson’s] opinion and other people’s opinions and [discover] a different twist on what you may think,” she said.

Badkey said some of the information presented was new and other information provided a nice recap for her.

“It helps to have few more tools in your tool chest,” she said.

Fischer wants patrons to know there are resources available to help them navigate the digital landscape.

“Overall, I hope the series helped attendees feel more confident identifying what information is true and what is not,” she said. “And when in doubt, they can always call and ask a librarian.”

BY GENE POLICINSKI WASHINGTON – The power of the press rests in the ability of journalists to hold government accountable, to mobilize public opinion on matters that are important to individuals, communities or the nation, and to provide necessary information of value.

Notice in those words not a mention of celebrity content, mobile devices nor “aspirational” reportage that feels good without doing any good.

But also notice in those words the key to the future for newsrooms across the nation: A visible role in the daily life of the nation rooted in real benefit and sustained credibility.

Newsprint may not be the medium-of-choice today for many readers, and perhaps certainly not the one for the desired next generation of readers.

But the news organizations behind what certainly will be a blend of printed and electronic pages must be again the mediums-of-choice for that group, whether they be thoughtleaders in society, officeholders in government or voters.

The nation – our audience – needs facts, presented clearly, accurately and completely.

For those who are help rapt by the comings and goings of the Kardashians and turn away from discussion of policy in the Keystone Pipeline System debate: Well, perhaps it’s time to say “goodbye” and leave them to vacuous talking heads, unreal “reality” shows and the assortment of cable TV geek-fests that offer a chance to feel superior just by sitting on a sofa.

“Targeted circulation” indeed.

Let’s leave behind the prideful ignorant who proclaim little faith and demonstrate even less actual consumption of news, and target those readers and users who want news and data and informed decisions – and who will pay a reasonable fee to

get it.

Ok, not as easy to gather in and report out as feature items and single-interview chats. It means bucking the system to place journalists in seats where daily decisions are made and social issues discussed – from City Hall to church pews.

It means bringing the news of the day in new ways, but with the same old standards that separated opinion from fact, news pages from editorials and commentary from reporting.

The Newseum Institute’s latest State of the First Amendment national survey, published on July 4, showed that 70% of respondents disagreed with the statement that “overall, the news media tries to report the news without bias.”

To be sure, the change of bias has been leveled at journalists since the nation began – and was, in fact, welcomed by many in the first “journals of opinion” and later by media moguls making no pretence at publishing anything but “news” filtered through their own views.

But over time, and by dint of the hard work and credible reporting by tens of thousands of journalists – in newspapers, and later in radio, television and now online – readers, listeners, views and users gave their loyalty to news operations that brought them what they needed.

As emotional as one can be when waxing about ink-on-newsprint, it was the information that was printed with that ink, on those pages, that made newspapers strong and powerful – and that information was the stuff – not the fluff – of life.

Of course there is room for entertaining, uplifting stories and reports on that part of the day that makes us chuckle, smile or simply shake a head. But editorial decisions ought not to start and end there.

“Click-bait” ought not to squeeze out real debate.

“Metrics” ought not to rule over meaning.

And the challenge in thorough reporting on the county’s budget next year ought to mean finding a new way – perhaps through the new studies of gaming technology as applied to news reporting – of telling a complex story.

Decades ago, USA TODAY showed us how color weather maps and national sports rankings could be fun while still bringing needed information to commuters, gardeners and golfers – and while also reporting on AIDS, national security issues and unsafe military vehicles.

Consider that most news today still originates with mainstream media – and that the value for those aggregators was simply in finding a new way to package and deliver the content.

A simple text-and-photo site called Craig’s List wreaked havoc on the financial underpinnings of a massive industry just by finding an easier way to post and peruse the same information.

Cannot we collectively continue to find such innovation within newsrooms as well?

Journalists have learned many hard lessons over the last two decades: Nobody really loved us because of our nameplates, innovation was not just a good idea but a daily consideration on survival, and we no longer are the gatekeepers anymore between news makers and news consumers.

But in those tough, even brutal, decades, we’ve also discovered how to make our pages come alive – literally, via the Web – and found new ways to know about and be in contact with those interested in news and information.

To the old axiom about being “Clear, concise and accurate” those who have survived have added “responsive.”

The power of the press was, is now, and will be in the future, bringing consumers the news they need – and having the fortitude to seek and report the news they don’t even yet know they need, but will.

Ignorance and apathy is the challenge.

Credibility and necessity are the means to overcome those challenges.

Benet relies on understudies to take care of business against Marian Catholic on homecoming

It was a night for the understudies at Benet Academy.

A new quarterback making his first start, a cornerback asked to fill in at running back—his first time in the role since grade school—and an assistant coach asked to fill in at the last second.

All fulfilled their duties admirably as the Redwings rolled to a comfortable 49-13 homecoming win over Marian Catholic.

The Redwings (4-2, 3-1 East Suburban Catholic) plan was to keep things simple for sophomore quarterback Colin Gillespie, who was filling for injured senior quarterback Matthew Boyle.

He went 9-of-17 passing for 137 yards and had three carries for 14 yards and a touchdown in the third quarter.

“I thought he did a wonderful job tonight,” said Redwings assistant coach Jeff Hembrough, filling in for head coach Pat New as a last-minute sub due to personal reasons. “He was a little anxious to start with, but he settled down and threw the ball well and ran the ball well for us.”

Much of their offensive attack stayed on the ground and they shared the ball to prevent the Spartans (0-6, 0-4) from zeroing in on one player. The strategy worked to devastating effect as

the Redwings scored seven rushing touchdowns with five different players scoring. No single running back had more than 100 yards rushing in the contest, either.

One of their running backs was senior cornerback Ben Cooney, who hadn’t played running back in a game since grade school until Friday. When asked to assist, though, he was more than willing and helped provide some potency to the offense.

“It’s hard for the defense when they don’t have one or two options,” Cooney said, who had six carries for 71 yards and two rushing touchdowns. He also had three receptions for 21 yards and a 29-yard punt return for the Redwings.

The Redwings’ defense also contributed, forcing five turnovers in the game and keeping the Spartans’ offense mostly at bay.

A blocked punt by junior linebacker Michael Wymer late in the first quarter gave the Redwings the ball in the red zone and gave the offense the opening they needed and stopped the Spartans from possibly smelling an upset.

“It was a really big play,” Wymer said. “And I was glad I contributed. We wanted to get the offense into good field position all night.”

tember 22 and 23, placing second in the varsity division and first in frosh/soph competition.

The Downers Grove North divers provided a strong start to the invitational, with Mia Marconi placing first in the varsity 1 meter diving event, and Lauren Lucina placing second.

In the Varsity swimming competition, North’s Jaye Sevcik placed second in the 100 yard backstroke and third in the 200 Yard IM races. In the Varsity 200 yard medley relay, the Trojan team of Sevcik, Libby Benge, Emma Roche, and Jessica Phillips took second place to DGS. Phillips also placed fourth in the 50 yard freestyle event. “It feels really good to have contributed like this,” he said.

“It was a tough game, but we really came through.”

Former College of DuPage employee gets eight years for stealing DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced Sept. 29 that a Wheaton man accused of stealing more than $200,000 from the College of DuPage in 2013, was sentenced to eight years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for stealing approximately $400,000 from the College of DuPage.

John Valenta, 68, of Wheaton appeared before Judge Liam Brennan who handed down the sentence.

On February 28, Valenta entered a plea of guilty to one count of Theft in Excess of $100,000 From a School or Place of Worship, a Class X Felony. The sentencing is the result of a thirteen-month-long investigation conducted by the State’s Attorney’s Office and the College of DuPage.

In addition to his prison sentence, Valenta was ordered to make restitution in the amount of $399,000.

Valenta was employed as a radio station engineer at the College’s radio station, WDCB, for approximately 30 years. In October 2013, an internal audit conducted at the radio station revealed an abnormally large number of costly invoices for radio station engineering services from a company named Broadcast Technologies, which Valenta owned. Many of the invoices were for repairs to the radio transmitter, which was the responsibility of Valenta. An investigation into the matter revealed that from June, 2006, through December, 2013, Valenta submitted Broadcast Technologies invoices to the College of DuPage for merchandise and labor for work purported to be done at WDCB. The investigation also revealed that the labor and merchandise listed on the invoices were never delivered to WDCB. “Mr. Valenta’s greed finally got the better of him,” Berlin said. “He was no longer satisfied with a good paying job he held for nearly three

decades and decided that he would simply steal from not only the College of DuPage but from DuPage County taxpayers to fatten his wallet. I would like to thank the authorities at the College of DuPage, particularly Daniel Bindert and Detective Kent Munsterman, for exposing Mr. Valenta’s scheme and

for bringing this matter to our attention. I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Ken Tatarelis and Lynn Cavallo for their work in holding Mr. Valenta responsible for his actions.”

Valenta will be required to serve 50 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

Not too late at 58, you have to knuckle down on debt Get disciplined about budget, expenses if you want to retire with dignity

DEAR DAVE, I’m 58 years old and have nothing set aside for retirement. My wife and I are on Baby Step 2 of your plan and paying off debt. We have $37,000 in debt not counting our home, and five kids still at home.

We have a household income of $73,000 a year, and were wondering if we should go ahead and start Baby Step 4, investing for retirement, instead of paying off the debt.

DAN DEAR DAN, Your most powerful wealthbuilding tool, both mathematically and factually, is your income.

The most powerful way to build wealth — whether it’s playing catch-up at 58 or starting at 28 and becoming wealthy over the long

haul — is to have your income available. That means it’s not flying out the door every month to make debt payments.

Fifty-eight is not old, but you do have to get busy if you want to retire with dignity. I’d really lean into this debt and make it disappear in the next 18 months. I’m talking about sticking to a tight budget, living on rice and beans, and selling so much stuff around the house those kids think they’re next!

After that, you’ll have to throw every dime you can into building an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses. And after that, you’ll have to spend 10 years going crazy saving for retirement by

pouring about $12,000 a year into good mutual funds.

Can you do that and win, and by “win” I mean retire with some dignity? Yes, you can. But it’s not doable if you’ve got $37,000 in debt hanging around your neck!
