Resident honored by American Cancer Society Judy Rospenda gets recognized with Capitol Dome Volunteer of the year award in Washington D.C

The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network recently honored Woodridge resident Judy Rospenda with its Capitol Dome Volunteer of the Year award at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. “To receive this award, I was very honored and quite surprised,” Rospenda said. “This award came from my peers so to be recognized for everything that I do, I can’t even put it into words.”

ACS CAN is the award that is presented to a volunteer who has effectively strengthened ACS CAN’s mission by leading legislative and community action, assisting with media outreach, fundraising and training and mo-

tivating others.

ACS CAN is the nonprofit advocacy affiliate of the American Society Society.

“What we do is go to Springfield once a year and Washington D.C. once a year to talk to our legislators,” Rospenda said.

“Throughout the entire year we communicate with them on calls, emails and on any kind off issue regarding cancer.”

The award ceremony was part of The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network’s annual Leadership Summit and Lobby Day, which brought together nearly 700 volunteers and staff from every state and almost every congressional district.

Rospenda joined advocates in asking Congress to take specific steps to make cancer a national priority and help end a disease

that still kills 1,670 people a day in this country.

“Something that I also love that we do is we get involved within our communities and to lobby legislators,” Rospenda said.

The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network was also part of the tobacco 21 rule, where you would have to be 21 or older to legally purchase any kind off tobacco, which was later vetoed

in congress.

Rospenda met with the offices of Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) and U.S. Senators Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and Dick Durbin (DIL) to discuss the need to support an increase in federal funding for cancer research.

She also asked them to cosponsor legislation that enhances patients’ quality of life and to support legislation that would close a loophole in Medicare that often results in surprise costs for older Americans when a polyp is found during a routine colonoscopy.

“All three of them have always been extremely supportive in everything we do,” Rospenda said.”

With one in three Americans being told that they have cancer sometime within their life, Rospenda said that we need all the help we can get from congress in order to help prevent and treat this disease. “The Affordable Care Act is not perfect, Rospenda said. “But, for all patients, we

have to do everything in power to help these people.”

Rospenda said that from her previous experience with cancer, it resonates more with her and she feels like she has a duty to help those in need of medical attention.

“I’m a survivor,” Rospenda said. “I was fortunate enough that I have incredible insurance where I work, my doctors were just incredible from day one and within two weeks I was taken care of.”

She also said that people need to be aware of their situations, and if something feels off, don’t hesitate to go to a physician.

“I lost my mom to cancer and my brother is a 21 year survivor,” Rospenda said. “People need to be their own best advocate when it comes to cancer, with me they caught it so early that I was back to work in 10 days but not everyone is like that, so you have to understand your body and get help if you need it.”

Woodridge 68 Teacher: A Hero in the Classroom Jefferson language arts teacher Jen Riskus selected by the Chicago Bears and presented with the Symetra Heroes in the Classroom award Jen Riskus, language arts teacher at Thomas Jefferson Junior High School in Woodridge School District 68, was presented with the Symetra Heroes in the Classroom award.

She has been selected by the Chicago Bears from hundreds of other nominations to receive this award. Only 16 teachers from the Chicagoarea per football season are selected.

She was surprised immediately following an all-school assembly with the award and recognition she deserves.

Riskus was nominated by Jefferson Principal Justin Warnke, who called her “a teacher who makes each of her students feel loved, cared for, and takes time to find each of her students’ strengths…Her students love her for her enthusiasm, love of learning, and compassion. She truly has a unique way of making every person who comes in contact with her feel special…She is one of a kind, and kids always win when they are around Jen Riskus.”

She was recognized at the Oct. 28 Bears home game against the New York Jets. She received two tickets to the

game and VIP sideline access to the field during warm-ups to meet the players and be recognized on the video board during the first quarter and was presented with her own personalized Bears jersey and other prizes.

As the award was being presented, there were so many other people who came to my mind that were equally deserving of the award, which is a true testament of how fortunate I am to be a part of such a great district. I could not be the teacher that I am without having the support of such amazing, hardworking, and collaborative colleagues and administration,” said Riskus. “Most importantly, every one of my students has

helped me to become a better teacher and a better person. I love each of them as if they are my own! I hope each student that I’ve taught or each player that I’ve coached knows that they will always have someone in their corner advocating for them, encouraging them, and pushing them to be even better than they were the day before.

“Thank you to [Principal] Justin Warnke for nominating me, thank you to District 68 for recognizing how important it is for teachers to develop strong relationships with their students, and thank you to the Chicago Bears for taking the time to give teachers recognition for all that they do.”

As part of the award, she will also receive a $2,000 donation to the school for use in her classroom.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced today that the first of two men charged in a 2016 Glen Ellyn armed robbery has been sentenced to twelve years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Joshua Phillips, 21 (d.o.b. 9/19/1997) of 325 Alder Lane, Glen Ellyn, appeared in court this afternoon in front of Judge Robert Miller, who handed down the sentence. On September 5, 2018, Phillips entered a plea of guilty to one count of Armed Robbery, a Class X Felony. On August 21, 2018, Phillips’ co-defendant, Alonzo Alexander, 22 (d.o.b. 4/13/1996) of 1699 Briarcliff, Wheaton, entered a plea of guilty to the same count. His sentencing date is scheduled for November 19, 2018, also in front of Judge Miller.

On November 26, 2016, at approximately 8:30 p.m., the victim was approached from behind by Alexander and Phillips who both forced the victim at gunpoint into his car.

The duo then ordered the victim at gunpoint to drive to several ATMs to make cash withdrawals from his bank account.

Phillips and Alexander also stole the victim’s iPhone. An investigation led by the Glen Ellyn Police Department led to the two men who were both taken into custody in early December.

“This afternoon, Mr. Phillips learned that for his role in the armed robbery of an innocent man he will spend the next twelve years behind bars,” Berlin said.

“I would like to thank the Glen Ellyn Police Department for the truly outstanding police work demonstrated in the identification and apprehension of these two dangerous men. I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Nicole Wilkes English and Anthony Pasquini for their efforts in holding these two men responsible for their actions.”

Phillips will be required to serve 50% of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

On November 8, 2018, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., the Lisle Police Department and Unity Partnership will hold a community meeting focused on increasing safety for citizens and police during a traffic stop.

Officers from the Lisle Police Department and members of Unity Partnership and police, will answer many important questions about traffic stops such as: • What do you do when you get stopped?

• How can you make the traffic stop safer?

• What are your rights during a traffic stop?

• What do you have to do during a traffic stop?

• What are the responsibilities of the police officer during a traffic stop?

• Why do the police make traffic stops?

• What can you do if you don’t like how you were treated during a traffic stop?

• What can you do to increase the likelihood of not getting a citation?

This past summer, students from CUSD 201 and Maercker District 60 served as Youth Ambassadors for the Westmont Community Branding initiative. “We’re interested in making sure our entire community gets involved with our branding process,” said Communications Director Larry McIntyre. “The kids had a lot of great ideas and we’re moving forward with the ‘Westmont is the Bestmont’ Contest.”

Chicago known for Capone, but IL gangsters had much wider reach

BY BARBARA VITELLO OF THE DAILY HERALD When it came to organized crime in Illinois, Chicagobased Prohibition-era gangsters loomed large during the 1920s and 1930s.

Al Capone, Frank Nitti, Lester “Baby Face Nelson” Gillis, Jack “Machine Gun” McGurn and George “Bugs” Moran earned international infamy that persisted for decades after their deaths. For years, the general perception was that when world travelers informed locals they hailed from Chicago, the locals responded with “bang, bang” and a finger-gun gesture.

The combination of enterprising criminals, complicit public officials and Prohibition gave rise to crime syndicates involved in bootlegging, gambling, prostitution, extortion and murder.

Organized by ethnicity and geography, the syndicates were known as the Chicago Mob or the Outfit. They produced the likes of Capone, Nelson and Moran — Capone’s rival and the target of an attempted assassination in 1929 known as the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, which claimed the lives of seven men, including Moran associates and an innocent bystander or two.

But Chicago wasn’t Illinois’ only hotbed of criminal activity. Southern Illinois was home to Russia-born gangster Charlie Birger, who was involved in gambling and bootlegging in Saline, Williamson and Franklin counties. According to historians, Birger’s onetime partners-in-crime were the Shelton Brothers, leaders of another southern Illinois Outfit. Eventually Birger split from The Shelton Gang, leading to bloody territorial disputes that rivaled Chicago’s early mob wars.

Rock Island had its own version of Capone in Ottawa native and onetime lawyer turned crime kingpin John Patrick Looney, whose life inspired the graphic novel “Road to Perdition.” It was turned into a 2002 movie that starred Tom Hanks and Paul Newman, who played the gangster based on Looney.

“BABY FACE” AND DILLINGER Chicago-born Gillis — whose youthful appearance earned him the nickname “Baby Face” — embraced the criminal life early, garnering convictions for auto theft as a teenager. Imprisoned for a 1931 bank robbery, he was set to stand trial for a second bank robbery in Wheaton in 1932, but escaped from

the guards who were transporting him to the Illinois State Penitentiary in Joliet, according to the FBI. Several years later, Gillis joined the Indiana gangster and bank robber John Dillinger. Gillis, Dillinger and Homer Van Meter were involved in a June 1934 bank robbery in South Bend, Indiana, where a police officer was killed.

About a month later, on July 22, 1934, police and FBI agents confronted Dillinger as he exited Chicago’s Biograph Theater. Dillinger ran to a nearby alley, where he was killed in a shootout.

Several months later, on Nov. 27, 1934, in what is now Langendorf Park in Barrington, FBI agents Samuel P. Cowley and Herman Edward Hollis encountered Gillis and fellow gangster John Paul Chase in a stolen vehicle. Hollis was killed during the ensuing gun battle. Cowley died from his wounds the next day. Chase and the seriously injured Gillis fled in the agents’ car. Gillis’ body was found the next day near a Skokie cemetery.

THE TOUHYS VS. CAPONE The son of a Chicago policeman, Roger Touhy was the youngest of six brothers, five of whom embraced lives of crime. Touhy and two of his brothers operated a Des Plaines trucking company.

At the start of Prohibition, they began a bootlegging operation in the northwest suburbs and later expanded into illegal gambling. Capone, who had been buying illegal beer from the Touhys, tried to take over their operation in 1929. Over the next few years, battles between the rivals took place in thenrural Cook County, including what is now Inverness.

Capone twice framed Touhy for kidnapping. Touhy was eventually convicted of kidnapping the brother of cosmetics mogul Max Factor Sr. in 1933 and sentenced to 99 years. In 1954, a federal judge determined the kidnapping was a hoax. Touhy, who served additional time for his 1942 escape from Stateville Correctional Center, was released in November 1959.

A month later, he and his bodyguard were gunned down. His killers were never caught.

SENT TO THE GALLOWS

In November 1926, according to historians, Birger ordered the murder of West City Mayor Joseph Adams, who was reportedly connected to the Sheltons. That attempt failed, but a second attempt a month later succeeded. Convicted of his involvement in Adams’ murder, Birger was hanged in 1928.

The jail where he was held, as well as the gallows, are now the Franklin County Jail Museum in Benton.

The Shelton Gang was led by brothers Carl, Earl and Bernie, Wayne County siblings who started out making moonshine and graduated to bootlegging and gambling. A 1926 power struggle over southern Illinois bootlegging operations between Birger and the brothers led to a mob war notable for the combatants’ use of homemade tanks.

Ultimately, Birger’s testimony helped send the brothers to prison for robbery.

After they were released from prison, the brothers attempted to regain control of their criminal operation, which was then headed by former fellow gang member Frank L. “Buster” Wortman, who went on to dominate illegal gambling in the region.

Wortman reportedly ordered the murders of Carl and Bernie Shelton. Earl Shelton survived several assassination attempts and died in Florida at age 96.

QUAD CITIES KINGPIN Rock Island had its own version of Capone in Ottawa native and onetime lawyer turned crime kingpin John Patrick Looney.

Looney ran gambling, prostitution, auto theft and bootlegging operations around Rock Island, where, according to the LaSalle County Historical Society Museum, he founded a newspaper and used it to attack enemies and to extort powerful residents by threatening to print unflattering stories about them.

Convicted of murdering a saloon keeper in 1925, Looney was sent to prison for 14 years. Released in 1934, he kept a low profile until his 1947 death in a tuberculosis sanitarium in El Paso, Texas.

On Friday, October 26, in Lisle’s (9-1), Class 3A First-Round playoff game with Dwight (6-4), the area’s fifth-leading scorer, would perform at an even higher level.

All McGrath would do against Dwight, is run for four touchdowns and 138 yards. McGrath, would kick five point-aftertouchdowns and toss in a 29yard field goal, in Lisle’s 38-14 victory.

McGrath would score 32 of the Lions’ 38 points. Lisle wide receiver, Demo Kellie (five catches, 95 yards), would score the Lions’ other six points, on a 25-yard pass reception,from who else, but McGrath.

With the 32 points scored, McGrath has tallied 115 points on the season, placing him behind only JCA RB Keenan Hailey (126 points) and Notre Dame RB Ty Gavin (120 points).

McGrath would complete six of his eight passes for 128 yards.

Mike Walker would chip in with 80 yards on the ground for the Lions. Senior WR Nick Martich,

would hook up with McGrath for a 31-yard pass completion.

The game was tied at 14-14 early in the second quarter before McGrath, finished off the Trojans with one and 29-yard scoring runs, to give the Lions a 28-14 halftime lead. In the fourth quarter, McGrath would finish off his extraordinary performance, with a 49-yard jaunt to the end zone, for seven.

In Round 2 the Lions will meet the winner, of Saturday’s Oneida (ROVA) (6-3) at North Boone (7-2), Class 3A Second-Round game,next weekend.

- Jamie Dear Jamie, If you’re following my plan, the first thing you should do is set aside a beginner emergency fund of $1,000. That’s Baby Step 1.

Next comes Baby Step 2, which means paying off all your debt except for your house. This would include your car.

During this time, you should temporarily stop any kind of investing and retirement contributions.

Once your mortgage is the only debt you have left, it’s on to Baby Step 3. This means you start saving money and growing your beginner emergency fund into a fully-funded emergency fund of three to six months of expenses.

When that’s done, you can attack Baby Step 4 — investing 15 percent of your pre-tax income for retirement. In your case, that would mean re-starting the contributions to your 401(k). The rest of the plan goes like this.

ESSA Summative Designations The Illinois State Board of Education will publish its annual Illinois Report Card on Oct. 31. The Illinois Report Card shows performance and progress for each school, using several metrics.

New this year, the State will analyze several metrics and give each school a designation in one of four tiers: Tier 1 – Exemplary, Tier 2 – Commendable, Tier 3 – Underperforming, and Tier 4- Lowest Performing.

The State’s tentative results for District 58 awarded a “Tier 1 – Exemplary” rating to 11 schools and a “Tier 2 – Commendable” to two schools. A “Tier 1- Exemplary” rating is given to schools whose performance is in the top 10 percent of schools statewide with no underperforming subgroups. The State awards “Tier 2 – Commendable” ratings to schools with no underperforming subgroups, but whose performance is not in the top 10 percent of schools. A “Tier 3 – Underperforming” rating is given to schools whose performance is not in the top 10 percent of schools, with one or more under-

performing subgroups, and “Tier 4 – Lowest Performing” is given to schools that are in the lowest five percent of Title 1 schools. These tentative results will become official, final designations when released by the state on Wednesday, Oct 31. School Report Cards and School Improvement Planning

The Illinois Report Card will also include PARCC assessment results. District 58 students in grades 3-8 take the PARCC assessment in the spring. Students in grades K-8 also take the Measures of Academic Progress, or MAP, assessment in the fall, winter and spring. Last year, District 58 worked collaboratively with staff and parents to help students approach the PARCC with a “can-do” rather than a “must-endure” attitude. The District is pleased to share that its preliminary spring 2018 PARCC results show improvement and more closely align with MAP.
