Pumpkin smashing event returns Community event designed to promote pumpkin composting For the second straight year, local community organizations and public agencies got in the Halloween spirit and competed in the Westmont Pumpkin Smashing Extravaganza.

Village departments and organizations were invited to put forth one contestant to go up 25 feet in a bucket truck and throw decorated pumpkins from at a target on the ground below. The goal of the annual community event was to have fun and promote pumpkin composting.

The pumpkin smash also benefitted the Westmont Chamber’s communitywide Stuff-A-Truck food drive and promote the People’s Resource Center, the Trick Or Treat Trail, Westmont Park District’s Haunted Forest event and general Halloween safety.

travaganza was part of the Trick Or Treat Trail event, held Oct. 22 in downtown Westmont. The competition was held in the public parking lot on the northeast corner of Cass and Burlington.

Additionally, one Westmont business, the Farm, announced that it will be accepting used unwanted pumpkins Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All pumpkins must be cleaned free of inorganic materials, such as candles and decorations, prior to being disposed in the composting collection container. The Farm is located at 34 E. 63rd St., just east of Cass Avenue on the north side of the street.

Villages announce trick-or-treat hours, safety tips Trick-or-treaters should wear reflective clothing, make sure masks and costumes do not impair their vision Halloween is upon us, and residents of Downers Grove, Westmont and Woodridge will be out and about this weekend celebrating a fun and frightful time of year.

Trick or treating will take place throughout the west suburbs on the afternoon of Oct. 31.

The village of Downers Grove does not have mandated hours, but the Downers Grove Police Department recommends trickor-treating during daylight hours.

The Westmont Police Department recommends trick or treating from 2 to 7 p.m. In Woodridge, trick-or-treating hours are from 3 to 7 p.m.

Police also offered a number of safety tips to residents.

Trick-or-treaters should wear reflective clothing, make sure masks and costumes do not

impair their vision or ability to move, show caution when crossing streets, travel in groups, and have a parent check their candy.

The Woodridge Police Department and Smart911 added that children should not eat treats until they have been inspected by an adult and avoid eating homemade treats made by strangers.

Parents should take a digital photo of their children so they have a detailed description in the event of an emergency; make sure their child’s costume is safe; know who their kids are trick or treating with; exchange phone numbers with their child’s friends and their parents; and report suspicious or destructive activity to the police immediately.

Westmont to hold 95th anniversary celebration Nov. 10 The village of Westmont will celebrate its 95th anniversary next month, and Mayor Ron Gunter said he’s thrilled to start the countdown to the village’s upcoming centennial.

“This is very exciting for us,” Gunter said. “This event will be the kick-off of our five-year countdown to the village’s 100th anniversary celebration.”

During a recent village board meeting, Gunter said the event will include several exciting announcements and presentations,

The mural will depict Westmont history prior to the community’s 1921 incorporation as a municipality. Themes featured in this first mural will include the CB&Q railroad, farms, native American trails, the plank road, South

Gregg’s School, the Gregg’s milkstop, Excelsior bricks and more.

“I am truly honored to be selected to be the first artist working on this project,” said Westmont artist Fanny Moy. “I want to thank everyone on the committee for assisting with the historical research necessary for this first mural.”

Study the fine print before choosing a Medicare option Medicare continues to be a popular healthcare option, but there are coverage gaps

Medicare open enrollment begins October 15 and runs through early December. It’s the time when seniors and disabled people can switch plans to cover gaps in Medicare’s coverage.

Medicare continues to be one of the country’s most popular social programs, but there are coverage gaps.

The program is complicated and often misunderstood, and those already on Medicare and those about to be should think hard about their options.

It’s a time to beware of falling for sales pitches like the ones I received this year.

One mailing from a New York City hospital told me if I signed up for its “unique” Medicare Advantage plan, I could save money if I used the hospital system’s doctors particularly its “preferred” physicians. It noted that not all doctors who are part of its system were preferred providers and to check when making an appointment.

It offered no clue about what preferred meant.

Another invitation from a seller of Medicare Advantage Plans invited me to a seminar at a local Boston Market, where I could pick up a free pie if I attended.

Often glossed over at these insurance-sponsored kaffeklatches are the essential differences between the two options for covering Medicare’s gaps.

Increasingly new seniors coming onto the program don’t know what those are.

These days insurers covering employees while they are working are allowed to automatically enroll them in an MA plan when they become eligible for Medicare. The insurer, using what’s called a “seamless conversion,” sends a letter to the workers explaining the new coverage, which takes effect unless they opt out within 60 days. It’s easy to overlook the notice.

About one-third of Medicare beneficiaries now have MA plans largely because the government has paid insurers more - about two percent more - than it costs to provide the same benefits under the traditional program.

Those overpayments have allowed MA plans to offer extra benefits like eyeglasses and dental exams that are not part of traditional Medicare’s benefit package.

In some areas the higher government payments have made it possible to offer consumers MA plans with no monthly premiums, an attraction for cash-strapped seniors.

Premiums for Medigap policies are often higher, but people who have traditional Medicare and a Medigap policy face no restrictions on what doctors they can use. MA plans require seniors to use only providers in the insurers’ network. A recent Kaiser Family Foundation study of 20 counties found that on average MA plans included only about half of the area hospitals in their networks; 40 percent of the plans did not include a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center.

MA plans come with high out-ofpocket maximums a senior must reach

before the insurer will begin paying 100 percent of their medical expenses. In 2016 the maximum could be as high as $6,700. Also, seniors are sometimes surprised to learn that they are on the hook for 20 percent of the cost of expensive chemotherapy drugs until they reach the out-of-pocket limit.

Too many sales people gloss over this crucial point.

While there is no limit on out-ofpocket spending for those in traditional Medicare, many seniors buy Medigap plans that limit their exposure to high out-of-pocket costs.

During open enrollment people already covered by a Medicare Advantage plan can choose a different MA plan. Seniors enrolled in traditional Medicare with a Medigap can also switch to an MA plan. But later on if they don’t like their MA plan, their options are limited.

Here’s the catch. They can always return to traditional Medicare during open enrollment, but they can’t always get a Medigap to cover the gaps.

That depends on their state. Some allow people to buy Medigaps after returning to traditional Medicare. Others don’t.

Research shows that very little is really known about how MA plans care for people who become seriously ill or who need specialty care, says Tricia Newman, senior vice president of the Kaiser Family Foundation. Healthy 65-year-olds don’t always think about that possibility at an insurer’s sales event. She added seniors who opt for Medicare Advantage plans when they first go on Medicare may be making an irrevocable decision by giving up their right to purchase supplemental insurance later in life.

polIcE duPage County Sheriff’s Office serves hundreds of domestic violence warrants SWEEP WAS PART OF NATIONAL FAMILY VIOLENCE APPREHENSION DETAIL Deputies with the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office attempted to serve more than 100 domestic violence-related warrants and served 12 no-contact orders within DuPage County Oct. 19.

The sweep was part of the 14th annual National Family Violence Apprehension Detail.

While more than a dozen DuPage County deputies participating locally, hundreds of law enforcement

agencies around the country also participated in the day-long detail. The collaborative effort is commonly known as SWEEP, which helps raise awareness of family and domestic violence in communities around the country.

“While many do not talk about it, domestic violence unfortunately happens every day in homes around our community and across the country,” said Dan McCarthy, a major with the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office. “Programs like SWEEP are a step in the right direction to end this problem. It shows offenders that they will be held accountable for their violence.”

In 2015, law enforcement agencies from 36 states participated in the detail, along with probation departments, district attorney offices, shelter organizations and community members. Last year, 8,949 attempts were made to serve arrest warrants across the country and 1,761 arrests were made.

Woodridge resident identified as man found dead at Seven Bridges Golf Course The DuPage County Coroner last week identified a man found dead at a Woodridge golf course Oct. 15.

The body of Daniel Miller, 29, of Woodridge, was found by police and fire personnel near the Prentiss Creek area of Seven Bridges Golf Course. Authorities secured the scene until a representative from the DuPage County Coroner’s Office responded and pronounced Miller dead at 12:40 p.m.

An autopsy was performed Oct. 17, with preliminary results pending investigation and toxicology. Both departments are currently continuing their investigations, according to the coroner’s office.

Lisle gets its fifth win, but is still left out of the IHSA state playoffs

Lisle entered into its week nine matchup with Streator needed a win to reach a 5-4 record and qualify for the IHSA playoffs.

The Lions took the field with players out of position for the game and found themselves down 13-0 after the first half.

Everything clicked in the second half, however, and Lisle outscored Streator 28-0 after intermission and walked away with a 28-13 win.

“We knew this was our playoff game,” said Lisle coach Paul Parpet. “We had to be in a position to get our fifth win.”

Lisle did earn its fifth win and became playoff eligible, however, the Lions are one of only 10 teams in the state to have five wins and not earn a playoff berth.

Lisle finished with 36 playoff points, which are the total number of opponents’ wins on the season, and are tied with Mattoon, South Fork, Princeton

and Bloomington as the school’s missing out by one point.

With the tiebreaker being defeated opponents’ wins, Lisle was the third of 10 teams to be left out.

The Lions walked into the must-win game without starting quarterback Mark McGrath, who was limited with an ankle injury and took snaps at receiver, while his sophomore brother, Jay, was at quarterback.

“Even if I couldn’t walk today, I was going to dress just so I could be there, but I rehabbed really hard today and I knew I couldn’t play quarterback, but thought I could play receiver,” Mark McGrath said. “We know how really good players they are.”

Junior Jake Ventrella took the reigns at running back for the first time all season and carried the ball 27 times for 171 yards.

“The coaches prepared us really well for this and they gave me an opportunity and I thought we executed especially in the second half,” Ventrella said. “In the first

Locals head into IHSA football playoffs Benet holds No. 11 seed and hosts first round with Hoffman Estates

When the IHSA playoffs were announced last weekend, six Voyager Media area teams locked in spots to compete for a state title.

CLASS 7A (22) hoFFman ESTaTES @ (11) bEnET acadEmy 7 p.m. FRIday, ocT. 28 Benet comes into the playoffs off a second-place showing in the vaunted East Suburban Catholic Conference and a 7-2 mark overall.

An astounding seven of Benet’s opponents are in the 2016 post-

season.

No team in the state has more opponents in the playoffs and only two equal the Redwings, including Class 7A and ESCC rival Carmel of Mundelein.

Benet faced its tough schedule and posted an 11.1 points per game differential, scoring 29.8 points per game and allowing 18.3.

Hoffman Estates scored 30.2 points per contest, but allowed 21.3 for a differential of 8.9.

The winner would face No. 6 Normal Community (8-1) or No. 27 Belleville West (5-4).

teams, the game could go either way and home field advantage could come into play for the Tigers.

With 38 playoff points, North edged Highland Park by one point and the home field.

The Tigers come into the playoffs boasting a 29.2 point per game differential, the third best in the field behind East St. Louis (36.0) and St. Charles North (32.4).

Plainfield North scored 40.9 points per game on the season, while allowing only 8.7 – including three consecutive shutouts and a pair of games allowing opponents to only one touchdown.

Highland Park on the other hand, has scored 32.1 points per game and allowed 16.4, for a difference of 15.7.

The winner most likely will draw the No. 1 seeded team in Class 7A Bradley-Bourbonnais (9-0), who faces No. 32 Libertyville (5-4) to

open play.

CLASS 8A (28) JolIET WEST @ (5) oSWEgo 7 p.m. FRIday, ocT. 28 Joliet West advances to the playoffs for the second time in three years, but also the second time in school history.

The last time West played in the postseason was two years ago – also at Oswego.

The difference this season is that the Tigers have more than just game film on the Panthers, because they played them earlier in the season.

With Joliet West making the move this season to the Southwest Prairie Conference, the teams met in week three of the season with Oswego pulling out a 7-3 win over West.

Defense was the mantra of Oswego all season, as the Panthers allowed an average of 7.9 points per game this season – having teams score double digits three times over the course of the year.

West is led by sophomore quarterback Jaxon Aubry and a talented group of receivers and have averaged 20.4 points per game.

The winner of the SPC rematch will face either No. 12 Edwardsville (8-1) or No. 21 Oak Park-River Forest (7-2).

Benet wins state tennis title Benet Academy edged out Joliet Catholic Academy by one point to win the Class 1A state tite.

In doubles action, Katie Telford and Pauline Neubert placed second overall, falling to JCA’s Maddie Bauer and McCoy Hutchison, 6-4, 6-1 in the finals.

In singles action, Caroline Arnold went 3-2, while Kate Piazza split her four games.

cRoSS counTRy On Saturday, the DGS girls cross country team traveled to Lockport to compete in the 1st round of the IHSA state series.

The Mustangs placed 1st out of 10 teams by scoring 43 pts, just ahead of the host Lockport team (48 pts) to win the regional title.

Brenna Cohoon (Fr) was the top DGS finisher, placing 5th overall and earning All-Regional honors. She was followed closely

by Melissa Weidner (So) in 7th place, Katie Stapleton (Sr) in 9th place, Erin Reidy (Fr) in 10th place, and Becky Versaskas (So) in 12th place. Olivia Duax (So) and Allison Calek (So) placed 29th and 35th respectively.

The hilly Dellwood Park course proved to be as much of an opponent as the rest of the field as the Mustangs battled through the race. Early on, it was obvious that it was a 3-team race between DGS, Lockport, and Plainfield North. Lockport made the first move and took control of the race at the beginning, as their top three runners were all placed in the top five. Katie was the lone Mustang in the lead pack along with two Plainfield North runners. The main pack of DGS runners followed behind in roughly 10th through 15th places as they approached the 3/4 mile mark.

Positions remained basically the same throughout the first 1.5

miles. At that point Katie started to fall back some, while Brenna and Melissa caught up to her.

Over the next mile, all of the DGS runners rearranged into their final finishing order. Lockport still had three girls ahead of our first, but we had closed the gap on them. Our pack of five was ahead of their 4th and 5th runners, but they still held a slight lead in the race at that point.

Plainfield North still had 2 girls in the top 3, but their next 3 girls were too far back to make a difference in the team scoring.

Over the final 1/2 mile, the DGS pack continued to inch forward. Both Brenna and Melissa each passed Lockport runners in the final 200m to help transition a very close race into a 5 point victory. As has been the case all season long, this team has stepped up to help each other out. When some girls struggle, others have helped carry the load. This regional championship was truly a team effort!

The most important result of the day was qualifying on to next week’s IHSA Sectional meet. The girls will compete at the Marist sectional at Midlothian Meadows forest preserve on Saturday, October 29th at 10:00 am. The top 5 teams out of the 19 competing will qualify for the State Meet.

claSS 1a In Regional action over the weekend Westmont’s Girls Cross Country team advanced to Sectional to take place at Lisle Saturday.

The girls team repeated as Lisle Regional champions taking first place with 23 points.

The Sentinels placed 4 runners in the top 10 to outdistance Timothy Christian by 24 points.

Halle Nash (1st, 19:22) was this year’s regional champion

beating last year’s winner by almost a full minute.

Halle’s time also set a new school record for Westmont runners on Lisle’s 3.1 mile course.

Lily Arndt (5th, 21:26) was also a Regional medalist with a 5th place finish and her season best time.

Peyton Nash (7th, 21:44) and Lisa Niemiec (8th, 21:48) were not far behind.

Frankie Fabry (13th, 22:23) and Ashley Eiermann (32nd, 24:45) also had their best times on Lisle’s 5K course.

“This was a much needed win for the girls who have struggled of late to put together a complete team race,” said coach Steve Wolf. “This should really help their confidence going into Sectional especially with how well Halle is running now.”

The boys team also qualified for Sectional with a third place finish of 66 points behind Walther Christian 45 and Timothy Christian 48.

Matt Gedraitis was the individual Regional Champion edging out the runner up by 7 seconds.

Westmont had 5 runners in the top 25 and under 19 minutes for the 3.1 miles.

Sam Asa (9th, 18:08) was followed by Jasper Requiron (16th, 18:36) Sophomore Jake Dooley (21st, 18:54) and Freshman Jason Eiermann (23rd, 18:56)really stepped up their race.

Kyle Casper (29th, 19:17) rounded out the Sentinel scoring.

“We got some nice races where we didn’t expect it but we’ll need every gut to be on his game this weekend if we want to qualify for state,” Wolf said. “Matt is running really well now up front and our pack guys are starting to come together now.”

St. Charles East does boast the second best point differentials in the Class 8A field, outscoring its regular season opponents by 29.9 points per game.

Homewood-Flossmoor was the best in the class at 32.4.

The Saints’ offense tallied 41.6 points, while the defense was stingy in allowing only 11.6.

For Lockport, the offense scored 21.1 points per game, while the defense allowed 18.8 – a 2.3 point per game difference – the third lowest in Class 8A. Only Waubonsie Valley (0.2) and Evanston (-1.1) were below Lockport.

Waiting for the winner of this game will be No. 11 Marist (8-1) or No. 22 New Trier (7-2).

said. “The first half was hard to watch and pretty frustrating. In the second half, we rallied the troops and everyone from top to bottom stepped up. The sidelines got a lot of energy and we dominated the second half. It was awesome.”

The Dons are one of six teams from the East Suburban Catholic Conference in the postseason this year. Notre Dame enters the playoffs for the second-straight season, 17th in school history.

Notre Dame is keyed by a running attack centered around multi-talented back Ty Gavin and has averaged 22.9 points per game this season, while Palatine has amassed 40.2 points per game behind Division-I recruit quarterback Zach Oles.

Defensively, the teams have allowed nearly the same number of points, as Notre Dame has allowed 15.2 points per game and Palatine has given up 16.3.

Since 1994, the foundation has provided more than $200,000 to support District 99 and incorporate innovative curriculum and technologies in the classrooms at Downers Grove North High School and Downers Grove South High School.

“For over 20 years, caring volunteers from throughout our community have operated the Foundation,” said District 99 Education Foundation President Eric Olson, who is a 1987 graduate of South High and resides in Downers Grove. “With Denise’s professional expertise and oversight, the Foundation will be able to make an even greater level of impact.”

The foundation recently created a three-year strategic plan, which was presented to the District 99 Board of Education last year. In addition to outlining new fundraising programs and events, the plan recommended hiring an executive director to help the foundation grow revenue.

Denise Callarman is the new executive director of the District 99 Education Foundation. the nonprofit sector for nearly 30 years, serving in both staff leadership and volunteer positions. She co-founded and previously served as executive director and board member for COACH Care Center, also known as Almost Home Kids, in Naperville. That organization provides transitional care to children with complicated health needs.

Callarman has also volunteered as a foundation board member for a variety of non-profit organizations, and currently serves as vice president of the Tellabs Foundation in Naperville.

“There is tremendous potential and possibility for growing the

District 99 Education Foundation, both in terms of the number of people involved and the dollars we raise for our schools,” said Callarman, a Westmont resident and 1982 graduate of Downers Grove South High School. “As a lifelong member of the District 99 community, I know how much people care about our children and want them to have every resource available to thrive academically.”

Nineteen District 58 students will perform in ILMEA’s District 1 Junior High Music Festival Nov. 5 at Lincoln-Way Central High School. In addition, two District 58 students will perform in the ILMEA District 1 Jazz Band Festival Nov. 12 at Thornridge High School.

The annual ILMEA Music Festival features student musicians selected by audition from schools throughout the southwest suburbs.

The 150-member band, 100-piece orchestra and

150-member choir will unite for a special public Festival Finale Concert at 3 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

The annual ILMEA Jazz Festival features the top middle school and high school jazz musicians from the southwest suburbs, selected after a rigorous audition process.

The festival will include a public concert at 2 p.m.
