Students honored for national band selection Two DGS High School seniors will represent U.S. Army All-American Marching Band

Two Downers Grove South High School students will represent the 2018 U.S. Army All-American Marching Band in San Antonio, Texas in January 2018.

Seniors Jake Burrows and Danny King celebrated the news of their selection with classmates during an Oct. 11 national tour stop put on by the U.S. Army and Bowl Games of America.

“I’m truly proud to be an AllAmerican because I get to go to Texas and the Alamo Dome and perform something that shows my love and support for the army,” King said. “It’s a really unique way that I can use something that I love, that is music, and to perform it shows how much dedication that we put toward [our work.]”

Burrows shared that sentiment.

“It is a completely humbling experience,” he said. “I’m really honored to represent DGS, especially because we’ve had people con-

tinuously for the past four years go to the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band. I feel honored to first of all be part of it with Danny.

He’s an amazing musician. I’m excited to honor the army through music and through our leadership experiences that we’re going to learn from the army.”

The band is comprised 125 of the nation’s top marching musicians, and students received honors after being chosen from more than 1,300 applicants.

At Downers Grove South High School, King is trained as a clarinet player and Burrows prefers the trumpet. The two students were chosen to perform based on their submission of three audition videos, in which they both marched, performed and articulated their desire to participate.

“There was a lot of thought debating what piece I would like to play, and that means even marching, as well,” King said. “There are thousands of people [who try out] and I had to make sure I was at the best of my best for these audi-

tions.”

Burrows agreed.

“A lot of time outside of school was taken to do all these videos,” he said.

King said the level at which he prepares will need to change as the day of the performance gets closer.

“I feel like focus and energy has to go up a lot more because there are so many great people, and I feel like I have to be at the best that I can and have the most focus, so we can get an entire show done in less than a week,” King

said.

Burrows does not intend to change his approach in the weeks leading up to the U.S. Army AllAmerican Marching Band performance, however.

“To be honest, I’m just going to take it how I’ve been doing it [and] how I’ve been practicing all my other music,” he said. “I’ll break it apart and start memorizing it.

I want it memorized a month before, so I can polish it off [and] be ready. I want to be accountable for my part in the band.”

King has some goals in mind as

he prepares for his trip to Texas in January.

“I really hope to achieve just, in general, being a better musician, better marcher and knowing this is going to be my last show before I go off to college, I hope to create friendships and just enjoy a different feel of marching band that I experienced in high school.”

Burrows shared that sentiment.

“It’s going to be huge,” he said.

“I’m real excited, but it’s the idea of just breaking it down and really getting into the music and enjoying it. I think that’s what’s important about it—enjoying it.”

With the selection of Burrows and King, this year makes the fifth time in six years in which a Downers Grove South High School student has earned a spot to participate in the program.

The experience culminates with a performance at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, an annual East versus West high school game, that brings together 90 of the best football players in the nation.

Students bestowed with this honor in the past included Josiah Williams (2013); Sam Tedeschi (2015); Larissa Gurnic (2016) ; and Noah Tunney (2017).

A check for over $10,000 was presented to benefit the Almost Home Kids Respite Care Program on October 10 at Shanahan’s. Ten local bands donated their time and talent for this event.

The calm before the storm Creating peace is a complex process - and this, unfortunately, is not always obvious

BY ROBERT C. KOEHLER Tribune Content Agency Every time Donald Trump blurts or tweets a shocker - “maybe it’s the calm before the storm,” for instance - questions flood the media.

Is he serious? What did he mean?

Yes, of course, but beyond these, larger questions hover half-asked, cutting into the soul of who we are. This is painful, but not necessarily a bad thing. For me, one question that keeps emerging is: What is the relationship between Trump and the military-political system he stepped into?

That is to say, is he furthering its covert agenda (creating the conditions for more war) or, contrarily, exposing it for what it is?

Or both?

Back in February, for instance, Trump the pugnacious 14-year-old told a Reuters reporter: “I am the first one that would like to see . . . nobody have nukes, but we’re never going to fall behind any country even if it’s a friendly country, we’re never going to fall behind on nuclear power. It would be wonderful, a dream would be that no country would have nukes, but if countries are going to have nukes, we’re going to be at the top of the pack.”

America, America! It’s at the top of the pack, man. Trump puts what’s really going on into the language of the playground, delighting his base (a third of the country) and convulsing pretty much everyone else. Of course, what’s really going on is more than just bully blather. With Trump at the helm, the United States of America, the planet’s premiere superpower, is putting the planet, in the words of Republican Sen. Bob Corker, “on the path to World War Three.”

We were on that path anyway, just with more dignity and decorum. And more ambivalence. As the U.S. prepared for war it also negotiated peace: in particular, the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement, which Trump wants to decertify. Most security experts have hailed the agreement as a remarkable achievement, halting Iran’s nuclear weapons development, curtailing a nuclear arms race in the Middle East, easing tensions with the U.S. and

helping establish an international framework for creating peace.

The foreign policy establishment remains wary of Iran and considers the agreement flawed, but nonetheless crucial. Which Iran, former CIA analyst Paul Pillar asked recently, is most likely to act with destabilizing aggressiveness?

“Is it an Iran,” he wrote, “that is being reintegrated into the community of nations, that sees material benefit from negotiating restrictions on itself and then scrupulously observing those restrictions, and sees the opportunity for gaining more respectability and influence as long as it plays by the international community’s rules? Or is it an Iran that is kept isolated and punished, sees any significant agreement that it does negotiate get destroyed or reneged upon by other parties, that is the target of unending confrontation and hostility, and that is treated forever as a pariah? The answer should be obvious.”

Creating peace is a complex process - and this, unfortunately, is not always obvious. The point Pillar and others are making in support of the 2015 agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA, is that trying to punish and dominate our enemies tends to create results that are the opposite of what we want, or claim to want.

The idea that enemies are permanent, which is how a segment of the U.S. foreign policy establishment regards Iran, hardens our national commitment to militarism. Listening to countries with whom we are at odds - working with them, finding power in solidarity with them rather than threatening to annihilate them - calls militarism into question.

We live with and build national policy around the compromise between these two ways of being in the world.

Thus, even in an agreement as mutually beneficial as the JCPOA, the U.S. maintains a state of assumed dominance: Iran has to stop its nuclear weapons development. But the nuclear arsenal of the United States and the

agreement’s other signatories, which include China, France, Russia and the United Kingdom, are not under discussion. The unspoken assumption, it seems, is that some nukes are necessary, and some countries must remain in possession of them.

All of which brings Trump’s “top of the nuclear pack” comment back into the conversation. Dominating the world, especially by possessing the most weapons of mass destruction, is by far the simplest way to understand power, and there are enormous interests in the U.S. that revere - and most importantly, benefit from - the domination outlook. Trump both promotes this agenda and exposes it to the world.

Indeed: “. . . recently we hear (an) alarming announcement by a nuclearweapon state that it intends to continuously strengthen and expand its nuclear arsenal to ensure its place ‘at the top of the pack.’”

The words are those of Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s deputy foreign minister, speaking at the U.N. General Assembly on Sept. 26, the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, who warned that the United States - which he referred to as “a certain nuclear-weapon state” - was not only modernizing its nuclear arsenal but developing low-yield bombs, which means, my God, usable nuclear weapons, and thus launching a new, global nuclear arms race.

This project, part of a trillion-dollar planned upgrade of the U.S. nuclear arsenal, began during the Obama, not the Trump, administration.

But now the world has President Trump, commander-by-impulse and reckless reality-TV host with the power to launch war. He wants to decertify the Iran deal and declare it not to be in the country’s interests. Is he exposing the final phase of an international politics based on military dominance?

Here’s another question he forces us to ask: How is universal nuclear disarmament possible without a nucleararmed, external force imposing it?

This is not just a question to be pondered by the 122 nations that recently voted in favor of the U.N. Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

Those who boycotted the vote hold the answer.

Sheriff seeking help in locating missing person Amy Nelson was last seen Sept.

25 in Lisle Amy Nelson, a daughter, nurse, wife, and mother of two is still missing. Amy was last seen September 25, in the Four Lakes apartment complex in unincorporated Lisle.

Investigators and Amy’s family are concerned for her safety.

She was pursuing treatment for depression and anxiety and may intend on harming herself.

The length of time since she was last seen, along with the fact that she has no cell phone, vehicle or financial means available to her, raises the level of concern.

Nelson is approximately 5’7” and 145 pounds with shoulder length brown hair, blue eyes and wears glasses. Nelson was last seen wearing a gray or dark blue shirt, blue jeans, Birkenstock sandals and may be carrying a maroon backpack. She has family in both Lisle and LaGrange Park.

In his final high school game, McLaughlin faced CVS star Dick Butkus, who promptly spit in his face mask from about eight yards away.

It was the last time anyone disrespected McLaughlin.

“That was the first time and the last time I saw Butkus,” McLaughlin said. “He couldn’t catch me. I was an angry little man.”

That was one of the stories McLaughlin related during his acceptance speech Sunday after receiving the Lifetime Service Award from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Illinois Chapter.

Despite his small stature, McLaughlin, who grew to be 5-6,

went on to play three sports at North Central College, lettering in football, wrestling and baseball, before spending a year in the Canadian Football League with the Saskatchewan Rough Riders.

After returning to the Chicago area, McLaughlin began what became a legendary career as a wrestling coach at Joliet Central, leading the Steelmen to a 508192-9 record over a 40-year career that ended in 2010.

Under McLaughlin’s guidance, Joliet Central won the 1985 dual team state championship and produced 108 state qualifiers, including seven state champions and eight runners-up. But success wasn’t defined solely by victory.

“I tell my kids you can do it,” McLaughlin said. “Come in this room like you’re going to be a state champion.

Good things have come to McLaughlin, who was inducted into the Illinois Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1991.

He retired seven years ago to spend more time with his family but found he couldn’t stay away, so he now works four hours per day monitoring the cafeteria. “(I missed) being around the kids,” McLaughlin said. “That’s why I went back because I’m around kids. I’m an authoritarian so the bigger and the rougher the crowd, the better off I am. My ambition every day was to create one kid and make him better.

“That means breaking him down and putting him back to-

gether. The next day I got another kid and I kept doing that.”

Beneath the gruff exterior lies a man who cares deeply about the kids he coaches and about the latest recognition he’s received from his peers.

“It’s a dream come true (after) all those years of sweat and toil with the kids,” McLaughlin said. “(I take pride) just from my peers coming up and telling me congratulations because for 50 years we’ve argued when we go against each other but at these meetings we love each other and we’re not ashamed to say that.”

Downers Grove South athletic director Randy Konstans, who held the same job at Lockport, was one of five other individuals also awarded the Lifetime Service Award.

“It’s just so humbling, not just (to be honored with) Mac but all of them,” Konstans said.

“Especially when you consider

the people that have gone in before.”

McLaughlin, who is in his 50th year working at Joliet Central, still helps out with the wrestling team when asked. He also is an official at the state finals.

“Every time they need me to yell at them I give them a rahrah speech,” McLaughlin said.

“I’m good at that. I try to motivate people.”

Konstans was asked what he thinks McLaughlin’s legacy will be.

“We won’t know until it stops because he’s still working the (state) tournament with us,” Konstans said. “But I think you got a glimpse of it in his speech.

“To listen to him talk, you see how he can reach kids. To me, that’s going to be his greatest legacy, is what he’s been able to do for wrestlers at Joliet Central for 40 years.”

Downers South falls in regional final

Like the rest of his teammates, Downers Grove South junior goalkeeper Parker Smith had an inconsistent season.

Some days Smith kept his team in the game with brilliant play. Other days he had performances he would like to forget.

Nothing epitomized the upand-down nature of the season more than the fact the Mustangs did not win consecutive games all season.

But at least they saved their best for last.

Parker made seven saves, including two on breakaways, and sophomore forward Enrique Gonzalez scored a goal to give the Mustangs a second-half lead on top-seeded Morton at Saturday’s Class 3A Argo Regional final.

It was the unquestioned highlight of one of the roughest campaigns in program history.

Unfortunately for the ninth-

seeded Mustangs, it was also their last.

Morton (20-1-2) responded with a pair of goals from freshman Jesus Perez to rally for a 2-1 victory and a spot in the Hinsdale Central Sectional semifinals, where it will play fifth-seeded Downers Grove North on Tuesday.

This is the third straight year Morton has beaten Downers South in the playoffs.

“I think the team just took a little bit of time to gel together really well (this season) and really find that fighting spirit to play against teams that maybe outmatched us talent-wise,” Smith said. “I think the really big thing is we came out strong in the first half.

“First half last game we were down a couple goals and feeling out of it already, but this game we were fighting until the end.”

The Mustangs (7-11-3) lost 6-3 to Morton in the regular season and had to eke out a 3-2 win on penalty kicks over Argo in the semifinals just earn a rematch.

But Downers South played inspired ball in the face of long odds and a stiff wind in the first half, reaching intermission scoreless.

“We got to the first half 0-0 and we just wanted to come out and win the second half,” Smith said. “We scored early on but it just wasn’t quite enough to hold them off.

“They are just very individually talented. As a unit they work pretty well but what makes them such a dangerous team is that they can individually beat players 1-on-1. We had our work cut out for us when they really started pushing it.”

That began soon after Gonzalez gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead with 32:42 remaining in the second half.

Jack Daly set up the goal when he raced into the right side of the Morton box and crossed in front to Alex Flores, who headed the ball toward the net. It got caught up in traffic before Gonzalez raced in and booted it past Morton goalie Andrew Martinez.

Ironically, the goal seemed to energize Morton, not Downers South.

Perez tied the game at the 29:44 mark off an assist from Yobany Esparza and put Morton ahead just 2:41 after that with another strike. Adrian Barrera sent a ball behind the Downers South defense to the top of the box, where Perez ran onto it and quickly shot it past Smith and inside the left post.

“First half was rough,” Perez said. “I played a position that I really didn’t play which is center mid.

“Then when second half came, I told Coach before going in, ‘Can I play forward? I will score.’ And I did.”

But the Mustangs didn’t surrender, holding Morton to just one shot the rest of the way.

They nearly tied it with 3:00 left when senior Adam Chaplin burst in alone on Martinez, who charged out of the net and made the great save.

“I thought our kids played tremendously hard,” Downers

South coach Jon Stapleton said.

“We had one in on the keeper and he made a nice save and we might have won. But we wouldn’t be here without Adam and then one he finished on Tuesday night.”

Stapleton was pleased with the effort shown by the Mustangs at the end of a rough season.

“You take that (five-minute stretch) out of the game and it’s a different result,” Stapleton said. “But that’s also Morton.

“They will get their couple chances and they are pretty good at putting them away, so you have to be pretty close to perfect a lot of times.”

The Mustangs were never perfect, but a 15-player junior class led by Smith and Daly are determined to improve.

“I think the way this program is and the way the lower levels are run we’re always going to be looking up for something,” Smith said. “We’re just going to come out next year and be better.”

Pair of local teams headed to playoffs Two area high school teams are headed to the IHSA postseason this year.

Benet Academy (6-3) earned the No. 17 seed in the Class 7A bracket and will travel to Maine West (7-2).

Downers Grove North is also in 7A and is the No. 31 seed and will head to No. 2 Normal Community (9-0).

NORTH CENTRAL Despite contending with a short week of practice, the North

Central College football team turned in a dominant performance in Saturday’s Homecoming game at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium, overwhelming the Augustana College Vikings in a 54-2 rout.

The 52-point margin of victory is the Cardinals’ largest against Augustana in 87 all-time meetings, and is North Central’s largest against any opponent since a 62-7 win over Carroll University in last season’s Homecoming game.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the way we responded,” said North Central head coach Jeff Thorne after the Cardinals took the field after finishing a suspended contest on Monday at Wheaton College. “We got off to a little bit of a slow start just trying to feel the defense out, then we opened it up and started throwing the ball on early downs and it made a huge difference.

“Our defense was tremendous today. Really, all three phases of the game were fantastic. With the adversity that we faced, and a short week of preparation, I’m proud of the mental toughness our guys showed. I’m really, really, really pleased with our players.”

The Cardinals (6-1, 4-1 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) rolled up a season-high 538 yards of total offense, including a season-best 252 rushing yards, while the North Central defense collected three interceptions and amassed eight quarterback sacks, matching the second-highest single-game total in school history.

The hosts opened the scoring

with 5:37 left in the first quarter, as Austin Breunig ran six yards for a touchdown. Early in the second period, North Central doubled its lead to 14-0 when Broc Rutter found Michael Sfikas on a crossing route for a 27-yard TD pass.

Breunig tacked on a five-yard scoring run after the Cardinals forced a punt, boosting the lead to 21-0 with 4:38 left before halftime.

Two plays later, a diving interception by Matt Sutherland put the North Central offense back on the field at the VIkings’ 35yard line, and the Cardinals were in the end zone on the next play as Rutter threw deep to Jake Beesley for the hosts’ third touchdown in just over seven minutes of play.

Augustana (1-7, 1-5 CCIW) punted on its next possession, but the kick was blocked by Tyler Holl, and Noah Swisshelm recovered to set up another possession in Viking territory. Rutter connected with Jalen Dennis on an 18-yard touchdown pass with 52 seconds left in the second period, sending the Cardinals into halftime with a 34-0 advantage.

Breunig scored his third touch-

down of the afternoon on an eight-yard run with 3:08 left in the third quarter, while the fourth-quarter scoring featured a four-yard TD run by Zane Lodico and a 56-yard scoring run by Alec Fidan.

Breunig finished with 114 rushing yards on 21 carries, his fourth 100-yard game of the season.

Rutter completed 20 of 28 passes for 286 yards, hitting Sfikas five times for a team-high 98 receiving yards. DJ Warkenthien posted nine tackles to pace the North Central defense, while Tyler Oakley and J.P. Sikora also intercepted passes and Josh Leonhard recorded two quarterback sacks.

“I thought Michael Sfikas was tremendous today,” Thorne said.

“He had a great week last week against Wheaton, and he’s making huge strides. I’m excited about what the future holds for him.”

The Cardinals travel to face Carroll University on Saturday.

The Pioneers are 1-6 overall (1-4 CCIW) following a 56-35 loss to Millikin University. Kickoff at Schneider Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Vacation home is not real money-maker DEAR DAVE, What is your opinion of buying a vacation home, then renting it out when you’re not there?

J.P. DEAR J.P., I see nothing wrong with it, as long as you’re buying with cash and you’re also debt-free. A vacation home is a wonderful “extra” as you start building wealth. Remember though, it’s still basically a very large, very expensive toy. In most cases it will go up in value, and if you rent it, it might become something of a money-maker for you.

But here’s another side to vacation home rentals: You’ll probably make some money, but in most cases there will be several weeks during a year when it sits empty.

You’re not going to get rich renting it out. So, they’re not really great investment properties. What you’re talking about is more of a plan to offset the annual costs of your toy. If you look at it that way, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

If you’re determined to go this route, be ready to deal with spills on the carpet and damage from your guests, along with general maintenance and repairs. There’s always something that needs attention when you own a property. But if you can handle all that emotionally and financially – and you’re not looking for it to be a big-time investment that will make you rich – you’ll be fine.

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, My wife and I are on Baby Step 2 of your plan. We have about $60,000 in debt left to pay off

before we’ll be debt-free, and a household income of $140,000 a year. We have one child, but we would like to expand our family.

We would have to do this using in vitro fertilization. We’ve talked to a doctor, and he’s given us a ballpark figure of about $20,000 for the procedure. Should we wait until we’re debt-free to have this done?

JIM DEAR JIM, Babies are wonderful, important things. Having kids, even the thought of having kids, is a big emotional deal. But sometimes it can cause people to change their financial plans and directions.

I would urge you not to accept the first opinion and pricing model you receive on something like this. I’ve heard prices of $35,000, but that includes as many attempts as it takes until your wife becomes pregnant. I’ve also heard of single attempts priced at $7,500 each. There are all kinds of options

and guarantees, because they understand someone who is willing to do this really wants a baby.

If I’m in your shoes, I’m not accepting the idea that there’s one approach and one pricing structure to all this. I would explore other options, as far as doctors and clinics are concerned. Then, with your income, you could consider taking off a couple months from paying down debt and put some money toward the IVF. If it doesn’t work pay off a little more debt, pause the debt payoff, and try for a baby again.

Take some time, learn a little more, and go from there – always using cash for the endeavor.
