grants support curriculum, innovation The Education Foundation of Downers Grove District 58 announced that it will award a record-breaking 31 grants, totaling $22,705, to 46 teachers and staff this school year.

Each grant supports highly innovative school projects that align with the district’s curriculum and strategic goals.

The foundation annually awards grants to teachers and staff who have a good idea with a solid plan, but lack funding to implement it.

Teachers submit their grant applications in September, and the foundation’s grants committee

completes a thorough and blind review of all grant proposals in early October.

Projects that show strong potential to impact instruction using innovative tools and/or techniques are selected. Project proposals must align with District 58’s curriculum goals and have measurable outcomes, among other requirements.

Proceeds from the Education Foundation’s fundraisers, which include Oktoberfest, the spring concert, the Harlem Wizards game and the Green Apple program, cover the cost of the grants.

Julie spring and Madelyn Fiene, o’Neill, Fairmount, hillcrest and indian trail music/ orchestra teachers, received an orchestra cello to enhance their students’ music opportunities. lauren Diamond, Anna Kupsco, Erik Andrews and lauren Braverman, hillcrest speech pathologist and resource/Dlp teachers, earned a grant that will provide interactive and multisensory cooking experiences for students in the Developmental learning program, or Dlp. shar sombeck and Michelle schmidt, Kingsley kindergarten teacher and occupational therapist, received a grant that provides activities to help develop kindergarteners’ fine motor, visual motor and academic skills. Jason lynde, El sierra principal, received a grant that funds Watch D.o.g.s. (Dads of great students), a program that promotes male role models in the school.

District seeks applications for new council Superintendent-led council will include parents, other community members District 99 announced plans to form a new Community Advisory Council tasked with fostering stronger connections between the school district and the community.

The council will be led by the superintendent Hank Thiele, who is serving in his first year at the district. The council will include parents and other community members who are inter-

ested in receiving and sharing information about the district.

“I believe that the new Community Advisory Council will allow participants to better understand the district in a deeper way, and likewise, for us to better understand what’s important to the community,” Thiele said.

“My hope is that by building these relationships with one another, we will ultimately increase

the success of all students.”

The council will include 12 to

18 people throughout the community who have a diverse mix of experiences. To ensure a balanced group, the superintendent is expected to invite members to participate based on school building administration nominations and applications received. District 99 is collecting applications at www.surveymonkey.com/r/D99CommunityAdvisoryCouncil.

The council will meet four times throughout the school year for a highly-structured, two-hour meeting. Each ses-

sion will include an update from the superintendent and time to share general feedback and concerns. The core of the meeting will be a presentation from district administration and/or faculty on a specific and timely topic.

Members will then explore the topic and offer their perspectives and ideas through a directed activity. Ideas brought forward from the council will be shared with the District 99 Board of Education and administration to guide decisions.

LIFE SAVING CALL Woodridge 4th grader recognized for making 911 call that helped save grandmother

Marc Schmidt’s quick-thinking 911 call helped to save his grandmother, according to Woodridge School District 68.

Members of the Woodridge Police Department visited William F. Murphy Elementary School Oct. 11 to recognize fourth grader Marc

Schmidt for his bravery and assistance when calling 911 from his home over the weekend.

Schmidt’s parents were out of town, and he was alone with his grandmother when he heard her cries for help.

He immediately called 911 and

total sign area (including both sides of a sign) does not exceed 32 square feet. In commercial areas, the same restrictions apply, provided total sign area does not exceed 100 square feet.

Regulations pertain to the total permitted sign area for all political signs (not per candidate), and there is no time limit on how long signs can remain in place. Cam-

paign signs are not permitted in the parkway, which is typically the grassy area between the sidewalk and the street curb.

“We are proud to support our library, one of the best in the western suburbs. We hope readers in the Downers Grove area will come to our book sale for some incredi-

ble titles, at very reasonable rates,” FOL President Joni Hansen said.

“Anyone who uses the Downers Grove Library knows what an incredible resource it is to the community,” Hansen continued. “We invite any residents interested in giving back to their community with a minimal time commitment consider becoming a board member of the Downers Grove FOL.” The Downers Grove Friends of the Library is a volunteer group that is known for its monthly “Adventures in Travel” programs and for helping the Downers Grove Library with various projects.

There will be a membership drive throughout the month of October.

The new Memorial site is located in downtown Lisle at 921 School St. In mid 2015, a Lisle Veterans’ Memorial Committee was appointed by the village to raise the funds necessary to construct the new memorial, which replaces a memorial constructed more than 20 years ago in Community Park.

Karen Burris, along with her husband Dan, leads the Veterans’ Memorial Committee. She said the grant put them “over the top”

of their fundraising goal. Since being notified of the grant, the Burris’ won the Illinois Association of Park District’s Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award for their efforts in publicizing and fundraising for the Memorial.

Dan Garvey, director of parks and recreation, said he is “looking forward to working with the volunteers” and incorporating the grant components into the overall construction efforts of the memorial.

The Home Depot Foundation partners with nonprofits to honor veterans and support local communities. This grant is part of Home Depot’s commitment to grow its support for veteran-related causes to $250 million by 2020.

lisle vFw awarded hOme depOt grant FOr new veteran memOrial The Lisle Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5696 has been awarded a grant by the Home Depot Foundation to support construction of a new veterans’ memorial in Lisle.

The grant provides for more than $16,000 in Home Depot materials, plus the volunteer labor, equipment rental fees and delivery charges required to install those materials.

Additionally, Oct. 11, 2016, has been designated as “Home Depot Day” for the new memorial. From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., approximately 100

answered all the dispatcher’s questions in a calm and clear-headed way.

The Woodridge student then assisted the responding police officers in making entry into the home.

For his ability to keep his composure in an emergency and for assisting the police and fire departments in getting emergency medical assistance to his grandmother, Schmidt was awarded a Certificate of Recognition.

Line between fate & choice there still might be times when we give in to the lure of superstition

BY JasoN florIN BuglE columniSt A basic part of my morning routine involves starting the coffeemaker and then choosing the day’s coffee mug.

The cabinet displays a great variety of sizes, shapes and colors to pick from.

As I scan my options on this particular fall morning, I notice a red and blue emblem peeking through from the back row. I pull it forward and see it’s a Chicago Cubs logo, and this day just happens to be the opening game of the playoffs.

Even though I haven’t used this mug in months, during which time the team has won the most games in baseball on their way to a division title, today it feels like they cannot possibly win unless I choose their mug. I can almost feel the stars aligning as fate draws me to select the cup that will assure the team a victory. So, I succumb to the delusion.

In a classic episode of the TV show “The Office,” boss Michael Scott explains that he is not super-stitious, but he is a little “stitious.” Even if we are rational and level headed in most of our daily encounters, there still might be times when we give in to the lure of superstition. We cross our fingers for luck, avoid walking under a ladder or

The concept of superstition is that we believe we can control events that are really outside of our control. These magical beliefs become stronger if the outcome happens to go our way. When the Cubs won their game the night I used that coffee mug, I made sure it was the only thing I drank out of for the rest of the weekend.

On the one hand, this kind of behavior is all in good fun – a harmless way of trying to be part of something bigger. On the other hand, an over-reliance on superstition can turn against us. Instead of focusing on choices that can have a meaningful impact in our lives, we waste energy on what we cannot control. As hard as we might try, we can’t change what others do and think, let alone how the universe will unfold.

The irony of superstition is that our misguided effort at greater control only leads us to have less control in our lives. Numerous research studies suggest that when we believe that we steer our own lives – known as an internal locus of control – we feel better,

perform better and experience greater success. We also take responsibility for our actions, rather than chalking it up to fate or bad luck.

The opposite occurs when we see our lives as a rudderless ship, tossed whichever way the wind and currents decide. This lack of power – known as an external locus of control – is associated with higher rates of depression, lack of self-esteem and lower life satisfaction. These beliefs also lead to stepping back from important life situations, since it feels as if we have no influence over the outcome.

By recognizing that we have choices to make, as well as how important those choices are, we can create a meaningful life. Yet when it comes to the areas we cannot change, it’s equally important to accept that we don’t have total control.

So you can keep the quirky routines that provide a small sense of connectedness, just as long as you don’t take them too seriously. After all, the best way to avoid tempting fate is to take control of it.

P.S. If the Cubs don’t win it all this year, you can’t blame me – I’m still using the same mug.

Woodridge PD hires new chief of police 30-year veteran Brian cunningham leaves naperville police Department The village of Woodridge announced this week that Brian Cunningham was hired as the village’s next chief of police.

The hire culminates a statewide search and recruitment process that included gathering input from the community at large and a community interview panel, which reflected the leadership and diversity of Woodridge. Cunningham comes from the Naperville Police Department, where he has had a 30-year distinguished law enforcement

career and most recently served as deputy chief in charge of the investigations division.

“We are excited to have Brian begin his duties as Woodridge’s next chief of police,” Woodridge Mayor Gina Cunningham said. “He has an impressive background in policing and an excellent reputation in the law enforcement community. We look forward to his continuing to grow the programs and relationships the Woodridge Police Department has with our community.”

coincidence, the two are not related.

When asked about his new designation, the Woodridge police chief said he is honored by the opportunity.

“I look forward to meeting community members, as well as getting to know the men and women that make up the Woodridge Police Department and the rest of the village of Woodridge staff,” Cunningham said.

Cunningham has more than 17 years of executive, command and supervisory experience and has 15 years of command experience with the DuPage County Major Crimes

Task Force.

He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Governor’s State University, he attended Northwestern University Staff and Command, Colorado State University Rocky Mountain Leadership course and the Senior Management Institute for Policing. He is a member of the Naperville Honor Guard Unit, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, and has served as an adjunct professor at the College of DuPage.

Cunningham is scheduled to be sworn in as police chief at the Nov. 3 Woodridge Village Board meeting.

At the Oswego Sectional meet at Blackberry Oaks Golf Course in Oswego, Benet’s Jack Neenan made his entrance into the state meet in dramatic fashion.

After posting a 38-38 – 76 during his round, Neenan was in a playoff with five other players for the final two spots in the field for the state meet.

Neenan left nothing to question as he carded an eagle 2 on the par-four first hole, the initial playoff hole, to lock in his spot.

He hit driver to the fringe of the green on the 343-yard hole and then chipped in from just off the putting surface to earn the eagle.

“I was happy I hit a good drive and I put myself in a good spot,” Neenan said. “Everything was going my way – I just wanted to get something close. After watching the other guys, I knew a birdie would do it and I just wanted to get something close.”

Neenan was only in the playoff because of one bad hole earlier in the round.

“I was so bummed after I had a double [bogey] on 17,” he said. “I thought I might have ruined my chances right there.”

He joined teammate Austin Feldman, who advanced with a second-place 71.

Brendan O’Reilly of Hinsdale Central was the medalist with a three-under-par 69.

“I hit the ball well,” Feldman said. “I was coming out here looking to put up a low number and I did. I putted well. I kept it pretty straight off the tee and I only had 25 putts today, which is good for me and I was really happy with that.”

This is the first time going to state for both of the Redwing seniors.

At the state meet, Feldman finished 31st in the state with a two-day total of 156, while Neenan was tied for 32nd with a 157.

As calendar flips to October, the weather may cool off, but the local volleyball action heats up as teams prepare for the IHSA playoffs.

Benet is the No. 2 seed in the IHSA Class 4A Marist Sectional and will compete in the Lemont Regional. Defending state champion Mother McAuley is the No. 1 and is also the team that eliminated Benet from the playoffs a season ago.

Like it was a year ago with Mother McAuley – Benet is on a collision course with other teams deserving to be in the state finals.

“Our sectional is regarded as the toughest sectional in the state,” said Benet coach Brad Baker. “Our sectional will meet up with the Geneva Sectional and three of four highest nationally ranked teams are in those two sectionals. Some of the very best and deserving teams will not make it down.”

Downers Grove North and South also find themselves in the Marist Sectional.

North is the No. 6 seed and is in the Stagg Regional. The Trojans will open play Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 6:30 p.m. against the winner of No. 11 Hinsdale South and No. 22 Simeon.

“We are excited about our opportunity in the regional pairings having earned the No. 6 seed,” said North coach Mark Wasik. “If we can get past Hinsdale South in the regional semifinal, we are likely to play the No. 3 seed in Marist who we played in the quarterfinals at the Wheaton Classic. We lost but it was highly competitive, 25-17, 18-25, 22-25.”

Financially speaking, she has about $150,000 in Certificates of Deposit, money market accounts and savings bonds. Is there a better place she can invest her money? aNoNYmous Dear aNoNYmous, Certainly there are other investment vehicles that will make much more money than CDs, money markets and savings bonds.

However, at your mom’s age people aren’t generally investing for the long haul, unless they’re investing it for their heirs.

If she’s comfortable with her finances, I’d suggest just leaving things alone.

Don’t try to force her into something new. At her age she may still have bad memories of the Great Depression and a negative perception of the stock market.

In a case like that, mutual funds might make her fearful.

I wouldn’t take the chance of robbing a 95-year-old lady of her peace to try and do the “proper” thing with money.

However, if she’s agreeable to the idea of doing a little better with her money, you could start by moving a little into growth stock or balanced stock mutual funds. But do some-

thing like this only if the change won’t upset her and leave her fretting over her money.

Dear DaVe, In your opinion, what is the limit you can responsibly spend for a wedding if the people involved have debt?

Paul Dear Paul, The cost of the average wedding in America rose to $32,641 last year.

But when it comes to what you can reasonably afford, I think it becomes relative to exactly how much debt you have and what kind of income we’re talking about.

If you have $5,000 in debt but you make $150,000 a year, stop worrying, pay off your debt, and save up for a great wedding.

If you make $28,000 a year but you have $30,000 in debt, then you need to have a really minimal wedding.

Anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000 would be reasonable in that kind of situation — and even then it’s going to be tight.

A $32,000 wedding would be ridiculous for someone with a $28,000 income. But $28,000 is a below-average income, so you shouldn’t reasonably expect an average wedding in terms of cost.

SEASPAR’s 5th annual Trivia Challenge scheduled for Oct. 21 teams can compete for $500 cash prize The Southeast Association for Special Parks And Recreation is hosting its fifth annual Trivia Challenge fundraiser Oct. 21.

The Trivia Challenge will take place at the American Legion Post 80, 4000 Saratoga Ave., Downers Grove. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the games begin at 7 p.m.

The Trivia Challenge is a fun, informal competition. Teams answer general knowledge and trivia questions, and the team that has correctly answered the most questions at the end of the competition receives a $500 cash prize.
