Dept . spreads fire safety awareness

The Downers Grove Fire Department has been doing their part to spread awareness in hopes to educate families and hopefully prevent future fires from happening.

On October 10, the Fire Department held their annual “A Night at the Firehouse” from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in recognition of National Fire Prevention Week.

“The week of [October 7th] to [October 12th] celebrates the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire,” said George Achter, Downers Grove Fire Inspector.

“Nationally, we take this week to take time in order to train, look, learn and listen to prevent future fires.”

According to the National Fire Protection Association, approximately 358,500 home structure fires happen per year, with $6.7 billion in direct damage.

Achter, who has been in fire service for 38 years, said that this day goes much further than people would think because of the education that occurs with each generation being more knowledgable about fires and the ways to prevent them.

“Watching the kids as they learn and progress, I might see someone hear in five years becoming a firemen and saving peoples lives,” Achter said. “As you see these kids grow up and evolve, they turn into people who want to help others which is what it’s all about.”

Kids and families had the opportunity to see demonstrations of automobile extrication, rescue techniques, fire behavior and a presentation of various uniforms with protective apparel worn by firefighters in a variety of emergency situations.

Children also had the chance to slide down a real firefighter pole with participants using the department’s thermal imager to see how firefighters locate hot spots in a room and seeing a dramatic real-life presentation of side-by-side rooms involved in fire demonstrating the effectiveness of residential sprinklers.

“People need to look and identify things in their home that can start fires,” Achter said. “The

number one cause of home fires are electrical, Christmas time lighting and out dated chords.”

Throughout the two hours, other activities that Station 5, 6701 displayed were learning what fire investigators do, learning about injury prevention from Good Samaritan’s emergency room nurses, seeing images of yourself from a thermal imaging camera, practice escaping from nontoxic smoke at the Kids’ Fire Safety Trailer, learning about Nicor natural gas and carbon monoxide safety, side-by-side burn rooms and viewing a residential sprinkler demonstration.

Another fire inspector who was present at the event was Wally Olewinski, who said that the United States needs to figure out other solutions to save lives because of the bad track we have had with deaths.

“Due to the fact the United States alone has one of the worst records of fire deaths in the world, doing these events helps increase the chance that we can one day get these percentages down,” Olewinski said. “The lives lossed in the event of a fire just need to go down, can’t continue t keep happening.”

One thing that Olewinski said that he wanted families to leave the Fire Station with was that you can’t pick and choose when to take precaution, and that fire safety needs to always be on families minds.

“Fire safety is 365 days a year,” Olewinski said. “You just cant take it for granted, you just have to keep up with it and simple things like making sure your address is visible so we can find you, and making sure kids understand how to call 911 is essential.”

Local resident and father, Luigi Mancini also lamented that as a father seeing the amount of deaths rising from fires is tough, and he wanted his children to gain a lot from this experience to take precautionary measures in the event of a fire happening.

“Even though we have two small kids, it’s never too soon to get them involved in the community and see what firefighters do,” Mancini said. “We want them to respect the firefighters, policeman, have the necessary education especially when they get older and to never treat fires carelessly.”

County receives CRS Rating from FEMA Program credits government agencies for efforts that go above and beyond standard flood protection for property owners For the first time, DuPage County earned a rating in the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Community Rating System (CRS) program that can save unincorporated residents up to 20 percent on their flood insurance.

The Community Rating System (CRS) program credits government agencies for efforts that go above and beyond standard flood protection for property owners.

Following evaluation, a community receives a rating on a scale from 1 to 10, and a corresponding reduction in FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program premium is offered to the community’s residents.

DuPage County received a CRS rating of 6, meaning unincorpo-

rated residents in floodplains are eligible to receive up to a 20 percent discount on their flood insurance premiums. DuPage County officially became enrolled in the program Oct. 1.

“This is a tremendous victory for unincorporated DuPage County residents. We estimate having this CRS rating in place will save 751 unincorporated residents nearly $100,000 annually,” said County Board Chairman Dan Cronin.

The DuPage County Building and Zoning Division spearheaded the effort and received assistance from the Stormwater Management Department and the Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

Bloomington’s Davis Mansion home to Lincoln’s strongest advocate EDITOR’S NOTE: The weekly Illinois Bicentennial series is sponsored by the Illinois Associated Press Media Editors and Illinois Press Association. Grand manors make up the skylines of many Illinois communities, but the history encapsulated at the David Davis Mansion in Bloomington holds it above the rest.

Built in 1872 on Bloomington’s then east side, the mansion was home to Judge David Davis and his wife, Sarah.

Davis served as judge of the state’s Eighth Judicial Circuit Court where he met and befriended an Illinois attorney by the name of Abraham Lincoln.

“Davis and Lincoln rode the entire circuit together,” said Jeff Saulsbery, site manager for the mansion. “Davis had to ride the circuit because he was a judge, but Lincoln only did because he was driven to make something of himself.”

Saulsbery said the duo spent plenty of time together, which led to Davis acting as “one of the biggest political operatives” in Lincoln becoming president.

“What Lincoln did for the Circuit and what the Circuit did for him is a large part of Illinois history. His time in Central Illinois is what led to him becoming the 16th president of the U.S. and saving the Union,” said Guy Fraker, retired Bloomington attorney and Lincoln scholar.

At the Republican National Convention in Chicago in 1860, five candidates vied for the Republican nomination, including Lincoln, who was the least known candidate among the group.

“The judge (Davis) went to Chicago and secured hotel rooms for all the Illinois delegates and convinced them and others to vote for Lincoln,” said Saulsbery.

Davis and his team used other tactics to boost Lincoln’s name at the convention and after the final vote was tallied, Lincoln was named Republican presidential nominee for the general election.

Without Davis’s advocacy, Fraker said Lincoln would not have been named

president.

“A lot of factors got Lincoln nominated, but the biggest factor was he had a friend like Davis who was a very skilled politician in 1860. That’s something we in Bloomington can be very proud of,” said Fraker.

Fraker also touched on a side of Davis and Lincoln’s relationship that he said “isn’t particularly appealing.”

“After Lincoln was elected president, there were two openings on the Supreme Court. All the lawyers who knew Davis told Lincoln to take care of him and give him a seat. Lincoln never responded to any of that and their mutual friends were quite critical of his decision,” said Fraker.

After a long wait, Lincoln finally appointed Davis as associate justice on the Supreme Court in 1862.

After Lincoln died, Davis said in a letter, “Lincoln was a peculiar man; he never asked my advice on any question.

Sometimes I would talk to him and advise him; he would listen.”

Davis so strongly supported Lincoln because of his “incredible integrity and intellectual honesty,” said Fraker.

The David Davis Mansion was built after Lincoln was assassinated but, prior to his presidency, Lincoln visited the Davises at their previous home located on the same grounds in Bloomington.

“The barn on the grounds is original to that first house owned by the Davises and the stable is exactly as it was 150 years ago. So, Lincoln’s horse was stabled here in the barn,” said Saulsbery.

Other outbuildings still standing on the 4-acre lot known as “Clover Lawn” include a wood house, two privies, a foaling shed, a carriage barn and an original flower garden.

Davis commissioned French architect Alfred Piquenard to complete the three-story, yellow brick, 36-room mansion for $75,000. The elaborate Victorian-style is a combination of Italianate and Second Empire architecture.

Piquenard also designed the capitol building in Springfield.

The mansion was well ahead of its time in terms of amenities. Indoor plumbing, hot and cold running water, central heat and gas lighting made up an impressive and modern estate.

The last ancestors of the Davis family donated the house to the state in 1960 and it was opened as a state historic site.

“The research into the history of the building started before a single brush of paint was put on the walls for restoration,” said Saulsbery.

The state initiated $2.58 million to use for restoration of the site and years of research and labor resulted in a grand reopening in 1992. Now, nearly 40,000 people tour the mansion each year.

In 2007, it was deemed one of the 150 greatest places in Illinois by the American Institute of Architects. The site is also on the National Register of Historic Places and is a designated National Historic Landmark.

“We are thought of as a museum, but we’re really an educational institution. You know the old adage: ‘You’re doomed to repeat mistakes if you don’t learn from history.’ That holds true today and it makes institutions like this more important than ever. We’ve got to know our past if we’re going to succeed in the future,” said Saulsbery.

The mansion grounds, at 1000 E. Monroe Drive in Bloomington, are open for public tours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.

Visitors watch a brief video on the history of the mansion at the visitors center before joining a 50-minute tour of the home, which delves into the lives of David and Sarah Davis, Lincoln and the Irish-Catholic servants who worked in the mansion.

After a tour through two levels of the mansion, visitors can check out the gift shop and the 19th-century flower garden.

Trojans blank Mustangs in crosstown battle, both teams need one win to enter playoffs

While the IHSA football playoffs do not officially start for another two weeks, Downers Grove North has been in a winor-go-home playoff mindset for the past couple weeks.

After opening the season 2-1 in its first three games under new head coach Joe Horeni, the Trojans lost three-straight games, putting them at 2-4 with three games left and needing all three to become playoff eligible.

After beating Lyons in Week seven, North shut out crosstown rival Downers Grove South 10-0 in week eight to keep its playoff hopes alive.

“We ran through a tough part

of our schedule and our kids could have hung it up and they fought and I am really proud of them,” Horeni said. “We were getting the offense, it is different – they have been running option veer here since 1985.”

With the loss, South is also 4-4 and needs a win to play beyond the regular season.

North will travel to York (35), while South hosts unbeaten Willowbrook.

“We will see what happens,” said South coach Mark Molinari.

“It is going to be tough, but we have a shot to get to 5-4 still, so we will see. Tonight would have really helped us. We just didn’t play our best.”

Despite youth, Benet top sectional seed

Benet’s girls volleyball team has been so good this season that it is easy to forget the Redwings are relatively young.

Star setter Allison Van Eekeren

is one of only four seniors on the roster. The 6-foot Creighton recruit shoulders quite a load at times.

“I pride myself on helping the younger kids adjust to the faster pace of the (varsity) game and (make sure they are) being energetic in practice,” Van

Eekeren said. “I think we four seniors help them along and they definitely have taken a big step up in practice and on the court.”

But on Saturday the Redwings got a reminder that not everything will come easily, regardless of how good their

senior leadership is.

Van Eekeren had three kills, 14 assists and two blocks and senior outside hitter Valentina Tabares had five kills, but it wasn’t enough as Huntley shocked Benet 27-25, 25-23 to win Glenbard East’s Autumnfest Tournament in Lombard.

The Redwings (28-5) led 2317 in the first set following a Van Eekeren kill. But her service error gave the ball to the Red Raiders, who went on a 7-0 run and eventually took the game on an ace from Arianna Torres.

How to make mammograms more comfortable Mammograms help to detect breast cancer early, improving women’s prognosis as a result. Susan G. Komen states that mammography is the most effective breast cancer screening tool in use today.

When women should begin getting mammograms remains open to debate. The American Cancer Society now recommends that women between the ages of 45 and 54 receive annual mammograms.

Despite the benefits of mammograms, many women avoid them out of fear of the pain and discomfort associated with the procedure. But researchers are examining how much pressure mammogram machines need to apply to get accurate breast images.

Until widespread customized mammograms are offered, women can take various steps to reduce the amount of discomfort they feel while undergoing these important screening procedures.

• Apply a topical numbing gel. BreastCancer.org says a study found that applying a numbing gel an hour before having a mammogram resulted in less discomfort when compared to placebo and other pain-reduction techniques. Be sure to discuss application of the gel with your physician prior to your procedure.

• Schedule your procedure for the right time. Do not schedule a mammogram right before or during a menstrual cycle, when breasts already are very tender due to hormonal changes. Waiting until seven to 14 days after a period is a better bet.

• Take pain relief pills. A physician may suggest taking ibuprofen or acetaminophen prior to the appointment to reduce discomfort before and after the procedure.

• Speak with the technician. Women can express their concerns about pain to the mammogram technician, who might suggest various ways to minimize discomfort.

• Learn about padding. Find an imaging center that uses padding on mammogram plates.

MammoPad is a soft, white, single-use foam pad that is invisible to X-rays.

• Avoid caffeine. Some women find that caffeine contributes to breast tenderness.

Avoid caffeine the week before the procedure.

Mammograms are an important health care tool.

Reducing discomfort may encourage women to follow guidelines regarding mammograms more closely.

“They played a lot better than we did in just about every aspect of the game,” Benet coach Brad Baker said. “We were running our offense from the 10-foot line, trying to just play high balls from a different spot. Those balls are not easy to hit.”

The Red Raiders, in contrast, got their hitters plenty of good looks. Tournament MVP Taylor Jakubowksi dished out 27 assists while all-tournament pick Julia Johnson ripped a match-high 11 kills.

The Trojans ran 71 offensive plays to just 25 for South, including a 19-play, 67-yard drive that took 10 minutes, 12 seconds off the clock to begin the game, which ended with a Cassens four-yard touchdown run — the lone TD of the game.

The win was first crosstown battle for Horeni in purple, as he played for South under Hall of Fame coach John Belskis.

“Oddly enough, I have Belskis’ offensive coordinator, Terry

Kent,” Horeni said. “He came across town. He was my coach and I had a good relationship with him. He does a fantastic job. People have a hard time getting a bead on what he’s doing. We don’t have a ton of looks but we do some stuff well and he’s mixed it up nice.”

The Trojans racked up 295 yards of offense and gave up only 70. Downers South quarterback Jayden Lambert was held to 30 yards rushing and seven passing and was intercepted twice — once from Cassens, who got his first pick of the season after three a year ago.

“You’ve got to remember these moments that you’re in,” Baker said. “Don’t forget (the losses) but you’ve still got to remember good plays and take the positives out of it. Obviously, to get to a championship match we made lots of plays to get here.”

Van Eekeren said it is vital for the Redwings to stay consistent and keep the energy up throughout every game. Benet is the top seed at the Class 4A Plainfield North Sectional and is pushing for its first state finals appearance since 2014, though it won’t be easy.

“We can’t take any team for granted,” Kenney said. “Every team is good in their own way.

“We’ve just got to play our own game, so as long as we play our own game and play together we’ll hopefully make it far.”

The mural features 11 fire department helmets with the names of each Fire Chief as well as the first fire truck purchased by the Village of Westmont in the early 1920’s and the most current fire engine number 183. The mural will be hung in the foyer of the Johanik Fire Department Headquarters at 6015 S. Cass Avenue.

During Trustee Guzzo’s remarks, she described growing up as the daughter of the Westmont Fire Chief.

Her father was involved with the Westmont Fire Department for four decades serving from the 1950’s

through the 1990’s.

The event also featured the debut of five Fire Department historical scrapbooks that were coordinated

by Diane Weiss, wife of Chief Weiss.

The scrapbooks showcase historical photos and news clippings from the beginning of the department through present. The scrapbooks will be on display at the Village Hall on the second floor through the end of October, along with a display case of Fire Department historical memorabilia.

Lay out a plan for success DEAR DAVE: I’m stuck in a deadend job and I only have a high school diploma. I’ve never minded long hours and hard work, but I’ve begun to realize I need to have a better career so I can spend more time with my kids. I feel like I’m missing out on their lives, because I work 65 to 70 hours every week. Do you have any advice on how to change my situation?

— Tim DEAR TIM: Asking questions and exploring your options like this is a much smarter move than simply walking away from an unsatisfying job situation — especially when you have a family to think about.

I’m glad you’re wise enough to take a thoughtful look at the situation, instead of making a rash decision that could have a negative impact on you and your family. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to improve yourself in terms of education or your career. But before you do any of that, you’ve got to have a definite direction in mind. You need an in-depth, detailed game plan for the next three or four years that’s designed to put you where you want to be. It may involve going back to school for some classes, additional training in your field, or even getting a full-blown degree. If you identify your long-term goals in detail, it will lead you to some of the short-term.
