Arboretum troll hunt will continue throughout 2018 Winter weather will determine if artwork remains in 2019

Time may be running out for your chance to hunt for trolls.

The Morton Arboretum in Lisle is offering expeditions through their far-reaching forest to hunt for six colossal trolls crafted from reclaimed wood by Danish artist Thomas Dambo.

This Public garden and outdoor museum with a library, herbarium and program in tree research is offering the chance of a lifetime, but it wont’ be for long.

“The exhibition opened June 22 and will continue through at least the end of 2018,” said Sarah Sargent, Manager of Interpretation and Exhibits. “We will evaluate how the outdoor sculptures withstand the elements over the winter.”

Some of the journey includes being able to marvel at the 15-to20-foot-tall (and one 60-foot long) sculptures that have been created to serve as protectors of our environment.

“The six larger-than-life trolls and troll hideout are set among the 1,700-acre grounds of The Morton Arboretum,” Sargent said.

When Joy Morton founded the Arboretum in 1922, the main focus was on living collections, a

research library and a herbarium.

Now, Sargent said the Arboretum has expanded to many more viewers, attracted a wide variety of different people and is a staple in a lot of neat history.

Village kicks off its annual Last Straw

Several fall fun events on hand for families at the Gregg House Museum

The annual Last Straw Fall Event kicked off last Sunday in Westmont at the Gregg House Museum, which hosted a wide variety of families enjoying the first weekend of October Fall fun.

Numerous different activities were scattered throughout the area for the enjoyment.

Because of inclement weather, a majority of the activities were hosted in the gymnasium.

A few different companies were also on site to bring awareness to families while enjoying their Sundays, with one of them being Chiro One Wellness center, the focus was to educate and give awareness to people in need.

“We’re here for the kids, we’re here to celebrate Halloween and fall, promote the village and obviously discuss the importance of chiropractic care,” said Ryan Sanders, Chiro One Wellness chiropractor. “We really want to get out and stress the importance of chiropractic care and how we can

help and heel people.”

Some of the main activities the event hosted were making a scarecrow, meeting a bee keeper, seeing animals, panning for gold, creating crafts, pumpkin decorating and having home-made goodies at the bake sale.

“I was a former employee at the Westmont Park District and I come to the event pretty regularly because of how much I enjoy being here and seeing everybody else here enjoying themselves a lot as well,” said Mike Johnson.

“I came here with some of my neighbors today, and the look on all of these kids faces being so excited and smiling, it just shows how great of a job the Westmont Park District does in creating opportunities for kids and seniors to get out into the community and have a great time.”

Forest Preserve District Historian entrepreneur Wayne Hill drew the most attention out of all the different activities Sunday afternoon, while displaying a table full of dairy products, churning buttermilk, milking a cow and giving presentations on inner

workings of how Queen Victoria influenced America.

“The enlightenment on the kids faces when they see all of this its just pure enjoyment and pure happiness which makes all of these even that much more fun for me,” Hill said. “To teach about dairy, teach about milking a cow, in order to get the cream and in order to turn the cream

to get to the buttermilk its all a learning experience for kids and families I think.”

Hill also said he thinks that for agriculturally and for kids to understand where they receive their food from is an important lesson for not just young kids, but a necessary education for everyone.

“The Last Straw Event is able to teach kids and families about

a lot of different aspects of harvest and what’s going on as far as where their food they eat and rely on every is actually coming from,” Hill said. “That’s not something that we all think about everyday, and the farm to table concept is something that is obviously relevant for everyone so I think that this is good for everybody.”

Morton Arboretum recommends for those who want to come out to see the trolls, dresses and prepares accordingly with the option to travel by car, bike, or on foot, and the total hiking distance to find all the trolls is six to seven miles.

“Some trolls are easily spotted as is the troll that overlooks the berm dividing the Arboretum from I-88,” Sargent said. “Named Joe the Guardian, he is often peoples’ reason for visiting and discovering this exhibition while another troll, Rocky Bardur, is located just off our main parking lot, but others can only be found by going deeper into our woods.”

These mysterious creatures— resembling the trolls of European folklore—were first spotted at the Arboretum in the spring of 2018.

As sightings increased, an official investigation was launched to learn about these fascinating new residents.

The trolls share the Arboretum’s desire to care for trees; however, they seem suspicious of humans.

Sargent said that because of the changing of seasons, the fall re-

Despite HQ move, Peoria home to 12,000 Caterpillar workers

Peoria wasn’t always a company town. It was a distillery town, a farm implement town and a river town before the Caterpillar Tractor Co. set up shop.

A bond developed between company and town that became a mutually-beneficial relationship.

Caterpillar rose to international prominence on the strength of rugged, reliable earthmoving machines while the Peoria area gained jobs — not only in bustling factories but at the headquarters of a Fortune 100 company, a rare distinction for a city of a population of 100,000.

But in 2017, that symbiotic relationship underwent a dramatic change.

Caterpillar announced two things that reverberated across central Illinois: the company ditched plans for an expansive office project in downtown Peoria that Caterpillar had promised with great fanfare just two years earlier, and the corporate headquarters would move to the Chicago area.

Peoria would remain Caterpillar’s “home,” the company stated, emphasizing that 12,000 employees would remain in central Illinois while some 300 executives and staff would work out of corporate offices in Deerfield.

Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis expressed appreciation for the employees who stayed behind but called the news “a punch in the gut.” State Sen. Dave Koehler said, “It’s something that everyone feared, but had hoped would never happen.”

The city now has fears of future announcements from Caterpillar management, headed by new CEO Jim Umpleby and board chairman Dave Calhoun, who heads the Blackstone Investment Group, that more jobs might be sent out of town.

While Peoria was jolted by Caterpillar’s actions last year, it’s no secret that the U.S. manufacturing scene has changed mightily since 30,000 people

were employed at central Illinois Caterpillar plants in the early 1970s. That was a time when most of Caterpillar’s machines were assembled in Illinois — in plants at Joliet, Aurora and Decatur as well as across the Peoria area.

Now Caterpillar has more factories overseas — 76 — than it does in the United States, where 62 plants operate. Caterpillar maintains 25 plants in China alone. When it comes to opening plants in this country, Caterpillar follows the trend of big manufacturers that set up shop in the Sun Belt.

U.S. plants opened by Caterpillar in recent years have been in Georgia and Texas while the company recently moved its mining division from Milwaukee to Tucson, Arizona.

Caterpillar Inc., the name the company adopted in 1986, has expanded beyond bulldozers. Along with making a major commitment to mining, Caterpillar is now heavily involved with equipment used for oil and gas exploration, electric power generation and marine engines.

But it wasn’t always that way.

By the time the Caterpillar name was a registered trademark in 1910, the Holt Caterpillar Co. had established a plant in East Peoria in a building that previously housed the Colean Manufacturing Co., a firm that made steam-powered tractors before the company went bankrupt.

Benjamin Holt’s family business started in the mid-1880s in California.

Holt Caterpillar started up a division in the Midwest, moving to central Illinois with just 12 employees.

Fifteen years later, the Holt firm merged with rival C.L. Best Gas Tractor Co., another California-based company, to form the Caterpillar Tractor Co. in central Illinois.

After the 1925 merger, C.L. Best became Caterpillar’s first CEO, a position he held until his death in 1951.

“Clarence Leo Best — no one called him Clarence. His friends called him Leo. At work, he was C.L.,” said Lee Fosburgh, Caterpillar’s archives director.

Fosburgh pointed out that it was Best who got Caterpillar off on the right foot.

“The Best Tracklayer Sixty became the Caterpillar Sixty,” said Fosburgh, referring to the workhorse tractor that

helped establish Caterpillar in the earthmoving marketplace. “Best helped lead the push towards the company’s adoption of the diesel engine. He came up with concepts and ideas right up until his death — at age 71,” said Fosburgh.

Former CEO and Chairman Doug Oberhelman, in remarks made at the 2016 opening of the an exhibit on Best at the Caterpillar Visitors Center in Peoria, said Best’s business acumen was one of the big reasons for the company’s success. Oberhelman noted that Best went to Wall Street for Caterpillar’s initial public stock offering on Dec. 2, 1929 — just weeks after the devastating stock market crash that precipitated the Great Depression.

After presiding over the company’s greatest sales year ever in 2012 when Caterpillar topped $65 billion in sales (an occasion celebrated in Fortune magazine with the headline, “Caterpillar crushes it”), Oberhelman went all-in on mining. In 2010, Caterpillar made the largest acquisition in its history, buying Bucyrus International, a Milwaukee-based maker of large mining equipment, for $8.8 billion. No sooner was the deal completed when mining around the globe went into a tailspin.

As a result, Oberhelman presided over something else: the closing and consolidation of 20 plants worldwide and a dramatic reduction in the company’s workforce. Between 2012 and 2015, Caterpillar laid off 31,000 people.

As a company that sold 34 pipe-laying machines to China in 1975, Caterpillar had a strategy for China in 2010: “We’re going to play offense and we’re going to win,” said Oberhelman at the time. By 2014, Caterpillar had 25 plants in China. But the Chinese market, once so hot, went cool.

But like the heavy-duty equipment it produces, Caterpillar has shown an ability to weather storms, whether inflicted by markets or strong winds.

Caterpillar was already bouncing back from the malaise in the mining industry in 2017 while in April of this year, Caterpillar posted the highest first-quarter profit in the company’s 93-year history with a 31 percent increase in company revenues.

There were many great days in Caterpillar-Peoria history. During World War II, 191 Peorians, including 158 Caterpillar employees, shipped out as a group to the jungles of Burma, forming Caterpillar’s own 497th Engineer Heavy Shop Co.

Downers Grove South earns win No. 4 in 35-7 victory over Leyden; needs one win for playoff berth

Friday night’s, key West Suburban Gold battle, between Leyden and Downers Grove South, picked up an early, 5 p.m., start due to a threat of severe thunderstorms, in Du Page County.

With 11:32 left in the first half, Leyden’s (3-4, 3-2), Vincent Frederickson, crashed into the end zone, from the four-yard line, to put the Eagles up 7-0.

Big mistake.

Seemingly enraged by being scored on first, Downers Grove South (4-3, 4-1), retaliated, by scoring the next 35 points in the game and blew away the Eagles 35-7.

Mustang junior quarterback, Jayden Lambert, put on a show, throwing the football, replacing Mustang senior quarterback, George Ross, who missed the game due to complications, from his asthma condition.

Lambert torched the Eagle secondary, for 266 yards passing and four touchdowns. Lambert completed 10 of his 12 passes thrown, with the other two being intercepted.

Mustang senior wide receiver, Vinnie Provenzano, caught three passes, two for touchdowns and 103 yards receiving. Josh Rudolph added four catches for 43 yards.

Two minutes after Leyden had scored, Lambert hooked up with senior wide receiver, Jaelynn Blecke (three catches, 95 yards,TD), for a sensational 53yard, scoring strike and after senior Robert Khalil’s PAT, the game was tied at 7-7.

“We practiced very hard all week to get ready for Leyden,” Blecke said. “We executed our plays all night. It just felt so good, to make the touchdown catch, to tie the game.”

With 7:54 left in the half, the Mustang defense, led by Blecke and senior linebacker Keegan Garland turned the Eagles over on downs at the Mustang 19.

With 3:41 in the half, Provenzano, caught his first touchdown pass from Lambert — a 69-yard catch and run — for six.

Whatever Mustang head coach,Mark Molinari, told the Mustangs at halftime, certainly worked.

With 7:54 in the third quarter some Mustang razzle-dazzle took place. At the Leyden 30, Lambert handed off to sophomore, running back Devean Washington (14 caries, 81 yards), who handed the ball off to Provenzano, who pitched the ball back to Lambert, who launched a pass, in the direction of Washington. A Leyden defensive back got in the way and deflected the ball, right into Washington’s hands and he raced

“Wonderful to get this victory.

We really needed it for the playoffs,” Washington said. “Our quarterback (Lambert), really stepped up for us and threw the ball well.

Our offensive line really did the job and got the ground game going in the second half. It was great to catch the touchdown, off of the deflection. We have to beat North on Friday.”

With 1:38 left in the third quarter, Lambert (12 carries, 50 yards), waltzed in to the end zone, from two-yards out. With 2:42 left in the game, Lambert hooked up with Provenzano again, this time from 18-yards out, to complete the game’s scoring.

“That was a crazy game,” Lambert said. “266 yards passing and

four touchdowns. Coming into the game, nobody thought I could throw like that. Maybe a few of the coaches, did. I showed ‘em. We played out of our minds, tonight.

“We had a game plan tonight against a tough team,” Provenzano said. “We played an almostperfect game. Whatever my team needed me to do, I was going to do it. Our offensive line did a great job tonight. No offense is complete without a great offensive line. “[We have a] huge game at North next week. Tons of hype and we will be ready.”

After the first quarter, the Mustang defense totally shutdown, the Eagle offense. The Leyden offense rushed for 126 yards in the game. 47 of those rushing yards, came on a lateral, to Frederickson (12 carries, 80 yards) The Mustang

secondary, held Leyden to just 32 yards passing in the game.

Up next for the Mustangs is a trip, next Friday, to the north side of Downers Grove, for the annual District 99 crosstown classic with the Trojans. of Downers Grove North.

“We were really short-handed, with three of our captains out,” Molinari said. “Everybody really stepped up for us. Wow. Jayden steps up and throws for 266 yards and four touchdowns. One of my associate coaches told Jaden, his performance was due to great coaching. haha. The flea-flicker type play, we have been running since summer camp. We thought it would be a good time to pull it out. Devean catches a touchdown, on the deflection. Big play. This is one of the biggest wins we have had here in a couple of years.”

fund of $1,000. Baby Step 2 is where you start paying off all your debts, except for your home, using the debt snowball system. A thousand dollars may not seem like a lot in savings during that time, but in the beginning it’s an attainable amount to save. Plus, it’s more than a lot of people have when they make the decision to get out of debt and gain control of their finances. Then, after finishing Baby Step 2 you move directly in Baby Step 3 — fully funding your emergency fund with three to six months of expenses.

How to ease kids’ transition to a new school

B

eing the new kid in school can be a tall order for youngsters. Children who change schools may face a host of challenges that studies suggest can affect both their social and academic development.

In addition to the toll transferring schools can take on their academic performance, students also may experience difficulty assimilating into their new schools. Though there’s no formula to make such transitions easier, parents can try various strategies to help their kids successfully adjust to new schools.

Speak with children about the transition.

Pathways.org, a not-for-profit organization devoted to providing free child development information to parents and health professionals, recommends parents speak with their children about transitioning to a new school. Encourage children to share what excites and worries them about the transition. The way parents discuss transitions can go a long way toward shaping how kids view the change.

Stay true to your routine. Pathways also recommends parents of students who are transitioning to a new school do their best to replicate first day of school routines from years past. Some familiar traditions might help calm kids’ concerns about their first day in a new school.

Assimilate into a new community before the school year begins. The education resource

Edweek.org notes that the most common causes of students changing schools are residential moves related to parents’ jobs or financial instability. Parents on the lookout for a new job or those who may need to relocate for financial reasons may want to delay moving until the current school year has ended. Moving between school years gives families time to acclimate to their new communities.

That means kids will get time to make new friends. Some familiar faces on the first day at a new school can go a long way toward alleviating the fears children may have.

Volunteer at your child’s new school. Parental involvement at school can have a profound impact on children. The National Education Association notes that children whose parents are involved at school are more likely to perform academically than students whose parents are uninvolved.
