seeks next principal Steve Bild bids farewell after 28 years in Downers Grove

D

owners Grove South Principal Steve Bild will tie the bow on career in education that has spanned 38 years at the end of the 2012-13 school year, and District 99 administrators have begun the process of finding his successor.

The district officially posted the position Monday, and now are seeking input from students, parents, teachers and staff on what qualities they would like to see in South High’s next principal.

“Right now we’re in the process of trying to solicit feedback from the various

stakeholders that are apart of our community,” said Pete Theis, District 99 associate superintendent. “Because it’s a community high school, we want to be collaborative with as many people as we can to gather their input.”

Theis said the district has already meet with parents and staff to get answers to a number of prompted questions such as what things they believe have been done well and what things they would like to see done differently in the future.

“Steve has done a terrific job at south high school,”Theis said.

Online insurance marketplace launches

Gov. Pat Quinn was on hand to announce “Get Covered Illinois,” the official online marketplace for residents of the state to shop for health insurance options.

The market was created as a result of the Patient Protection

and Affordable Care Act, popularly known as Obamacare.

The website (getcoveredillinois. gov) launched Oct.1 and allows residents of Illinois to pre-enroll in the new system.

Coverage under the new system’s plans will begin Jan. 1.

The deadline for pre-enrollment is Dec. 15. Currently eight

insurers will offer over 100 plans through the Illinois enrollment system.

To sign up, go to getcoveredillinois.gov and fill out a short online questionnaire.

Users can also contact a navigator or the call the website’s help desk to help them find coverage and answer questions. Enrollment is available for any Illinois resident that currently does not have health insurance.

The cost of the plan is determined by factors like age, location, income, tobacco use, the type of chosen plan and other information.The lowest rate for a bronze plan for a 25-year old in Chicago is $120. In Peoria it’s $163.The lowest rate for a bronze plan for a 60-year old in Chicago is $323. In Peoria it’s $346.

To sign up users need their full name, date of birth and information about their family’s income. Additionally users also need their social security number if they have one.

“We understand with the new system there are some glitches

and bumps,” said Quinn of the new website. Earlier that day, around 7:50 a.m. the website gave users a message that said: “We have a lot of visitors on our site right now, and we’re working to make your experience here better. Please wait here until we send you to the log-in page.

Thank you for your patience.”

Additionally, users that were able to log into the exchange saw the list of required security questions users need to answer to move forward with the process were left blank.Attempts to reload the page were met with another error message: “The system is down at the moment.

We’re working to resolve the issue as soon as possible. Please try again later.”

As of 12:20 p.m. most of these issues seemed to be resolved.

However administration officials urged consumers to use the call center, navigators and live chat function until the system’s kinks were worked out.

The navigators are people trained to support consumers in

accessing the insurance coverage programs within the new online markets. Currently, the state has about 100 certified navigators, said Deputy Governor Cristal Thomas. Officials expect to have over 1 million of the 1.5 million uninsured residents of Illinois to get registered via Get Covered Illinois.

However when Thomas was asked why there were only 100 navigators ready to assist users on launch day, she also said that the certification program for them was also experiencing “glitches and bumps.” New navigators must be trained with both the state and federal online insurance exchanges.The federal exchanges have also had reports of launch date glitches.

Additionally users can also look for Assisters, certified by the Illinois Department of Insurance, to help them sign up by entering their ZIP code at getcoveredillinois.gov/get-help.

Westmont to celebrate 90 years of fire safety

The Westmont Fire Department’s upcoming 90th anniversary celebration will be much more than a look back at its decades-long history, as the entire community will assemble to celebrate fire safety and remember one of the department’s beloved former leaders.

On Sunday, Oct. 13 the Westmont Fire Department will merge its National Fire Prevention Week Open House with a celebration to commemorate the day the department first opened its doors, Oct. 13, 1923. The department will hold a wide variety of fire safety activities from 1 to 3 p.m. that will be

followed by an anniversary celebration from 3 to 4 p.m.The event will be held at the Fire Department Headquarters, 6015 S. Cass Ave., and is free and open to the public.

“Our committee wants to focus on celebrating the history of this department and what it’s meant to the history of Westmont,” Fire Chief Dave Weiss said. “We want to display that history, and we want to talk about that history.”

Former Westmont Fire Chief Frank J. Johanik, who served 26 years as chief, was a major contributor to the legacy of the department. When the Fire Department Headquarters was constructed, it was named after the former chief. During the upcoming anniversary celebration, Johanik’s name

will be officially placed on the exterior of the building.

“Even though the station has been called the Frank Johanick fire station, it’s know going to be recognized publically,” Westmont Mayor Ron Gunter said. “It will now be very visible to the public, and we want everyone to know who it’s named after.”

Johanik joined the Westmont Fired Department in 1950. He became the fire chief in 1967, and maintained that role until his retirement in 1993. Johanik died in 2010.

In addition to Johanik’s dedication ceremony, the event will also feature a display of historic relics from the department’s earliest days.

Daily logbooks from as far back as 1928 will give attendees a

window into what it was like being a firefighter in the first half of half of the 20th century.

Weiss also said several historic fire helmets will be on display, including a helmet worn by the first Westmont fire chief.

“It’s important for the community to acknowledge and appreciate all that our fire department has done for us through the years,” Gunter said. “What we’ve been able to accomplish here and how highly rated our fire department has been is a tremendous asset to this community.”

Before the 90th anniversary celebration, the Westmont Fire Department will hold its annual Fire Prevention Week Open House.

Weiss said this year’s open house has been made into

a family event, which will feature educational activities for kids and adults. A Life Star medical helicopter will land in the parking lot south of Fire Headquarters and it will be open for attendees to tour between 1:30 and 3 p.m.At 2:30 p.m., a fire demonstration will be performed in a model room.

“We’ll actually light it on fire, we’ll let it grow and then we’ll put it out,” Weiss said. “Then, we’re going to let the residents come up and look in to see the devastation that can be caused by fire.”

There will also be a number of children’s activities scheduled for the day, including a jumping house and bucket game that allows children to win prizes for answering educational questions.

BNSF railroad crossing to close in October The Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad crossing on Cass Avenue in Westmont will be closed to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic starting midOctober due to reconstruction.

BNSF has stated that the expected start date will be Thursday, Oct. 17. Once started, the project is expected to take about eight days to complete, weather permitting.

This is an improvement project that has been under development for several years.

“This is a BNSF project that will cause some temporary inconvenience, but once it is finished, it will greatly improve the crossing for both vehicle traffic and pedestrians,” Public Works Director Steve May said.

“There will also be some minor platform repairs. We appreciate everyone’s patience while the work is being completed.”

Commuter train schedules are expected to continue as usual. During construction, a

vehicle detour will be set up at Fairview Avenue in Downers Grove. Motorists may also consider crossing the tracks at Prospect Avenue in Clarendon Hills. Pedestrians will still be able to cross the tracks in downtown Westmont at the pedestrian crossing adjacent to the Westmont Train Station.

Westmont Police and Fire Departments are developing contingency plans to provide emergency services on both sides of town during the project.

Additionally, they are working with Community Unit School District 201 to create a plan that ensures a safe path for students who need to cross the tracks

when walking to and from school.

“Our priority is to ensure that everyone is safe during this construction project,” Westmont Police Chief Tom Mulhearn said. “Also, once a start date is confirmed, we will be posting signage to alert motorists of the closure.”

The first round of interviews will take place Nov. 14 and 15, with the final candidate interviews taking place on Dec. 5.

“In those interviews we’ll have various groups of individuals represented,” Theis said. “We’ll have staff, students and parents making up part of the various group.”

A final interview with the superintendent will take place over the upcoming winter break, and Theis said the district will present their recommendation to

the Board of Education for a vote at the January business meeting.

After the next South High principal is chosen,they will spend the next six months meeting with staff and transitioning with Bild.

“I’ll spend a lot of time in the spring after the decision is made showing that person what I’ve done, how I’ve done it, how we operate and why we operate that way,” Bild said.

His last day is set for June 30, and that means the new hire will have to learn all they can from Bild before officially taking the reigns on July1.

“I want someone who’s interested in finding out what goes on at South High and learning about our culture,” Bild said.

Bild began his career in 1976, teaching special education in the southern suburbs.Ten years later

he took a teaching position in the special education department at Downers Grove South High School. In 1994, Bild became the chair of the special services department before moving to the front office as associate principal for curriculum and instruction.

He became principal in 2008.

“Although I’m still enjoying the job and I still feel like there’s work to do, it probably is time for someone else with some new ideas and a fresh approach to come in and help South High reach even greater goals,” Bild said.

During his time at South High, Bild led efforts to narrow the achievement gap between minority students. He said those efforts began unofficially during his time as associate principal by revamping the math curriculum.

An official effort was launched two years ago, which included increasing dialogue with students and parents, and raising staff awareness of how the school’s minority students view administrative efforts.

“We’ve increased the number of minority students that choose to take upper level and advanced courses,”Bild said.“I can’t honestly say we’ve closed the gap, but we’re working on it.”

Currently, the school is working hard to effectively transition to a Common Core curriculum.

“I don’t take any personal credit for the things that we’ve accomplished at South,”he said.“It really is a great school that’s team oriented and student oriented,” Bild said he has not finalized any plans following his retirement.

One thing he plans on doing is taking a much-needed vacation with his wife.

“You see Steve at the school from 7 a.m. in the morning until 10 p.m. at night many days of the week, because he cares so much about South High School,” Theis said.

Trojans, ‘little Tim Tebow’ top Mustangs

Tim Tebow is no longer on an NFL team, but “little Tim Tebow” made his debut at quarterback last Friday for Downers North in the annual matchup between the Trojans and Mustangs at Downers South.

Senior Sebastian Calvino— normally the Trojans’ tight end who’s also their backup quarterback—got word an hour before game-time that he’d starting in place of hobbled starter David Edwards, who suffered a bone bruise in his thigh during the Trojans’ Week 5 loss to Lyons Township and couldn’t go.

But the Trojans didn’t miss a beat as Calvino rushed for four touchdowns and 143 yards, including runs of 1 and 5 yards during the fourth quarter that enabled Downers North to pull away from its crosstown rivals and win, 42-21.

Calvino admitted to being “freaked out” when he got word from coach John Wander that he’d line up behind center, but he had been taking snaps because Edwards’ status was questionable throughout the week.

“Today I was pretty sure David was going to play, but coach came up to me and said, ‘David can’t play,’ ” Calvino said. “I was so nervous. It was such a huge game, but my teammates really came through.The blocking was phenomenal. Every single play there were huge holes for me to run through.”

The Trojans’ victory ended a three-game skid and puts them at 3-3, 0-3, but more importantly, it keeps their postseason hopes alive with three games to go.

Well-aware of Edwards’ status, Wander made sure three quarterbacks were ready to go

against the Mustangs—Edwards, Calvino and Vontae Diggs.

“If David is healthy, he plays,” Wander said. “If not, this guy’s got this formation, this guy’s

got that formation and play football.”

Diggs put his athleticism on display for the North-South crowd, scoring two touchdowns,

Magro out as coach: ‘I really didn’t want it to end this way’

Mark Magro stood outside a coffee shop along Main Street in downtown Downers Grove, wearing his Downers Grove North cap.

He still looks the part of the Trojans’ head softball coach, and

he still bleeds purple-and-white.

“My kids go there (to Downers North),” said Magro, who’s had a son and a daughter graduate from DGN, and still has one son going there. “I’m (living) two blocks from the school. I’ve been in Downers Grove 30 years so I know a lot of people and a lot of parents.”

But Magro is no longer the coach. Magro, who’s led the Trojans to four consecutive West Suburban Silver championships, compiled a 116-30 record during that title run, and also won three regional crowns, was let go by the district in early August after eight seasons.

This week, Downers North and athletic director Denise Kavanaugh announced that Eric Landschoot will be the new head coach. Landschoot, an English teacher at DGN, has been the program’s freshman coach since 2011.

“We are so pleased that Eric will serve as our head softball coach because it’s clear how much he loves the game by how he inspires our players,” Kavanaugh said in a statement.

“As a teacher, Eric can carry forth the same learning techniques he uses in the classroom for students to be successful out on See MAGRO, page 15

“Our quarterback went down, big Dave Edwards, so coach put the team in my hands as I am a three-year starter now, and he said, ‘Go make plays,’ ” Diggs said. “I felt like I needed to show myself because every game for us is for the state championship.

“Little Tebow, he did his job.

With Dave being injured, he did a great job stepping up for us.

He led the team amazingly.”

The Mustangs, however, battled DGS throughout most of the contest. Winners of three straight going into the game,DGS stunned the Trojans right out of the gate when senior wideout Javon Turner—who grabbed eight passes for a game-high 180 yards—took a pass over the middle from quarterback Jordan

Skach on the opening series and raced 86 yards, giving the Mustangs a 7-0 lead.

Diggs, though, knotted up the score by completing the Trojans’ first offensive series with a 16yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter.

“We’ve got to give a lot of credit to their offense,” first-year Downers South coach Mark Molinari said. “They were able to run the ball on us. I thought our offense played well, too, but unfortunately we did not play well on defense. That goes on the defensive coordinator, and I’m the defensive coordinator.

“We’re having a hard time stopping the run and we couldn’t get our offense the ball back. It seemed like when we had it, we moved the ball a little bit.”

Following Calvino’s 1-yard TD run, DGS senior running back Alec Arvanitakis (40 yards) sprinted 16 yards to the end zone on a sweep to force a 1414 tie. However, Diggs fielded the ensuing kickoff along the near sideline, cut right and was off for an 81-yard touchdown with 1:40 remaining before intermission.

“Vontae does a little bit of everything,”Wander said.“Vontae plays offense, Vontae plays defense, Vontae returns punts and kicks. Vontae is Vontae.”

A 2-yard Calvino run at 6:14 of the third upped DGN’s lead to 28-14, but the Mustangs responded. Arvanitakis turned a screen from Skach (16 of 26, 214 yards) on a fourth-and-13 situation into a touchdown to make it a one-possession game, 28-21.

The Mustangs (3-3, 3-0) visit Willowbrook Friday night in a showdown of West Suburban Gold unbeaten teams. The Warriors have won five straight after dropping their seasonopener.

“Our goal is to win conference and that’s the bottom line,” Molinari said. “We have a conference championship game (this week). They beat us last year on our home turf. They’re a good team so we’re going to go out there and see if we can’t win that game.”

Benet soccer goes 2-1; spikers top Marian Benet soccer’s high-powered offense was slowed down

by Marist, which blanked the Redwings, 2-0, on Sept. 30.

Konrad Bayer and Nick Senak combined for six saves in goal for the Redwings (11-2-1, 4-1), who dropped their first ESCC game of the year.

But the Redwings got back to their winning ways Oct. 3 after edging Metea Valley, 3-2. Metea grabbed a 1-0 lead, but Kyle Kenagy’s goal with six minutes left in the first half forced a 1-1 tie. In the second half, Kenagy and Michael Rindler assisted on Eddie Manzke’s go-ahead goal, and Kenagy made it 3-1 when he scored with 22 minutes to play.

The Redwings on Saturday improved to 5-1 in the ESCC, 132-1 overall, thanks to a 2-1 victory against St. Patrick. Rindler netted both Benet goals, including the eventual game-winner during the second half on an assist from

Manzke.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL Benet posted a 25-16, 2514 ESCC victory over Marian Catholic on Oct. 1. Rachel Fara led the team in kills with eight and finished with 12 digs, Tiffany Clark recorded six kills and 14 digs, and Stephanie Zinnappan registered 25 assists and 10 digs.

GIRLS SWIMMING Downers North received strong performances en route to winning their recently-held Trojan Invite, beating secondplace Lockport, 463-446.

Freshman Lindsay Mathys was a double winner individually, notching respective times of 55.16 in the 100-yard freestyle and 5:17.06 in the 500 freestyle.

Junior Junior Gabriele Seniute also wrapped up first-place finishes in the 200 individual medley (2:11.33) and 100 breaststroke (1:10.08), and junior and Emily Albrecht turned in a winning time of 24.99 in the 50 freestyle.

In diving competition, Emily Aument, a freshman, was first with 385.90 points.

Seconds went to Albrecht in the 100 freestyle, Elizabeth Aument in diving and the 400 freestyle relay, consisting of Mathys, Albrecht,

Costello was third in the 500 freestyle, Daria Wick finished third in both the 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle, and the 200 medley relay team of Costello, Cassandra CAndel, Ellie Arand and Riley McDaniel also placed third.

YOUTH FOOTBALL The Westmont Wildcats Jr. Pee Wee football team beat the Plainfield Prowlers 33-0 Sept. 22.

Running back Joshua Lumpkin had 14 carries for 130 yards, a touchdown and two extra points.

Eddie Mills carried four times for 82 yards and two touchdowns.

He also added four tackles on defense.

Mason Pardy had two touchdown runs and a 65-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Janas.

Chaz Hunter had a touchdown run and Elvin Sampson had six tackles and two fumble recoveries.

The Wildcats (3-1) kept it going with a 27-0 win over the Bridgeport Huskies.

Janas had an interception return for a touchdown and caught two passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Pardy was 3-of-3 passing for 170 yards and three touchdowns. Lumpkin had six tackles.

“I am thrilled to be serving as head coach this year,”Landschoot said in the statement.“I’m excited to start preparing the students for what I anticipate will be a successful season and rewarding experience for all of us.”

It is District 99 policy that all non-district employees—Magro works outside the district—must reapply for coaching positions each year. The district also gives preference to qualified, certified coaching candidates who are already teaching in the district, said District 99 spokesperson Jill Browning.

In early August, Magro said he was called in to meet with Kavanaugh, who informed him during their meeting that there were five qualified teachers interested in coaching softball.

“I was taken aback and I said, ‘Five?’ Magro said. “So she (Kavanaugh) said, ‘This is a hard decision for me …’ I did

ask if this was a (Downers) North decision or District 99, and she said, ‘District 99.’ So I immediately thought of Downers South because they have the same exact (softball) program (as DGN).They have two outside teachers (who are assistants) and a volunteer (assistant). I said, ‘So this is going to affect everybody?’ and she said, ‘Most probably it will affect everybody.’

“I found that out not to be really the case. It just happened at North.”

Shannon Walker, a Downers North graduate who’s assisted Magro the past six years, and Melissa LeBeau,Magro’s co-coach for four years who also served as the junior varsity coach, were let go, as well.

Erin Doyle, who teaches in the DGN physical, health and driver’s education department, will be joining Landschoot on the coaching staff. Amy Bugner, a social studies teacher at DGN, also will continue to serve as an assistant coach, as will Mike Johnson, who’s been a longtime volunteer assistant.

Although Magro said he’s well

aware of district policy as it pertains to coaches who don’t teach at District 99 schools, he believes he was relieved of his duties because, “I’ve had differences and disagreements with the AD.” “It’s just an issue of butting heads too much,” he said.

Magro concedes that at times during the 2013 season, “I thought I was kind of rocking the boat a little bit, but it wasn’t to be spiteful. I always try to put the kids first, but I tick people off, I guess, and it finally cost me.

“It was to the benefit of the kids and the benefit of the program, and sometimes that ticks people off.”

Asked by the Bugle to comment on Magro stating that he and Kavanaugh had differences, the district declined to do so.

“We cannot comment on personnel matters,” Browning said.

Magro said he feels bad for Walker and LeBeau, each of whom turned down offers from other schools prior to last season because they wanted to

THE BUGLE OCTOBER 9, 2013 continue coaching at DGN. “I thought if it (getting let go) was going to happen, it was going to be me and not (Walker and LeBeau),” he said. “I just wish they had gotten rid of me instead of getting rid of Shannon and Melissa (too). I really think that’s a mistake. This really guts the program because it’s not just me.”

Magro, whose 2010 team set a school record for most victories in a season with 32, said he was “angry initially” after being let go, but now, he said he’s “just bummed.”

“I appreciated the opportunity, but I really didn’t want it to end this way,” he said. “It kind of leaves a bad taste in my mouth, but that’s life. I give them credit for hiring me because I had no (high school coaching) experience.

“I wish the girls in the program nothing but the best. I wish there was a different outcome because I loved doing what I did. I hope I’ve made good impressions on girls, and I’ve gotten a lot of good responses from girls and their parents from

the past saying how sorry they were (to see him go). They’ve written letters to the principal and AD, and that makes me feel good. But it’s bittersweet.

“I feel a little anger; I feel a little sadness. I’m sure it’ll be mostly sadness when the spring season comes around because I’ve been doing it for years. It’s a part of my life.”

When asked if he would have done anything differently, Magro replied, “In hindsight, would I have changed, would I have been more laid back or not caused a little bit of problems? No. I would have done the same thing because I care about the girls and I care about the program. If that gets people mad, or ‘Don’t rock the boat,’ well that’s just me.”

Magro said he would like to coach somewhere else and “is keeping his eyes and ears open.”

“If it happens, it happens, but I hope it does,” he said. “This was a unique experience. It was great while it lasted.I’m extremely sad to see it go, but that’s what happens.

Niles West, Maine South set for CSL showdown

Usually by this time in the season, Maine South has either locked up a spot in the playoffs, or is on the cusp of doing so.

Niles West, though, has become the first club CSL South squad to punch its Class 8A postseason ticket. Through six games, the Wolves are a spotless 6-0, and are the only team left in the division that owns an undefeated record.

Will the Wolves be the team that ends the Hawks’ 61-game CSL South winning streak? We’ll find out when they host Maine South Friday in a matchup that could decide this year’s divisional champion.

After starting the year with senior Alec Basso behind center, the Hawks made the switch to sophomore Brian Collis, who’s doing a good job of running the offense. Yet Basso continues to sees snaps and has exhibited an ability to pick up yardage on the ground.

However, the Hawks’ running game goes beyond Basso. It’s become their offensive strong suit with senior Clay Burdelik and junior Justin Fahey. Burdelik can turn it upfield for long gains, while Fahey picks up tough yardage between the tackles.

The Jack Perez, Tony Perrone, Greg Ebacher, Luke Durbin and John Hader-led Hawks defense has hunkered down after surrendering 21 and 28 points in losses to Montini and Wheaton Warrenville South, respectively.

The unit registered consecutive shutouts against Glenbrook North and Maine East, and was

in control despite giving up 21 points in the Hawks’ 42-21 Week 5 victory over Glenbrook South.

Meanwhile,theWolves polished off their first four 2013 opponents by a combined 172-101.Although Niles West’s first four foes went a combined 7-13 through Week 5, the Wolves defeated Evanston, a perennial playoff qualifier, at Evanston in Week 5, 23-17. The victory left Niles West with a record identical to its 5-0 start last fall.

Junior Tommy Galanapoulos has emerged as one of the CSL’s top quarterbacks, and is a threat to either run or pass. Senior Andrew Mihulet is a clutch receiver-running back and also has come up big for the Wolves as a defensive back.

Wideout Quran Spillman, a junior, has morphed into a Jeremiah Jordanlike kickoff and punt returner, and Brandon Constantino provides the Wolves with breakaway speed at running back. mike@buglenewspapers.com

Orbus Exhibit and Display Group, one of North America’s leading trade suppliers of display, exhibit and event solutions recently broke ground on its new 350,000-square-foot facility in Woodridge.

Orbus has partnered with Conor Commercial Real Estate and McShane Construction Company, one of Chicago land’s most respected developers, to custom build the future home of the company’s Illinois-based manufacturing and distribution facility. The new building is being built in the Union Pointe Business Park, located off of south Woodward Avenue.

The move not only allows the company to achieve its plans for growth and expansion, but enables it to consolidate current Illinois operations (out of Niles and Bolingbrook) and bring its Illinois-based team together under one roof. The move will bring over 350 new jobs to the village of Woodridge.

Mayor Gina Cunningham and village trustees and representatives were present, along with representatives

from Colliers International Real Estate, Conor Commercial Real Estate, McShane Construction Company and Orbus Exhibit & Display Group were on hand for the ground breaking.

“We greatly appreciate Orbus’ decision in choosing Woodridge,” Cunningham said.

“Orbus’ move reflects positively on our strong business climate, and we desire to be an excellent partner throughout the company’s future.”

The building will be designed and constructed in such a way that Orbus can expand on the site at a later date to increase the building size from 350,000 to 430,000 square feet.

“Having the opportunity to build a new building gives us great options to organize and plan for the growth of the business,” said Giles Douglas, president and CEO of Orbus Exhibit and Display Group.

“We are thankful to be in a position to do so and have great excitement and expectations for what we can achieve with unified operations in Woodridge.”

Dear Dave, Our daughter is 11 years old, and we save $50 a month for her. Right now, we’ve accumulated $4,200 for college, a car or just savings in general.

Should we be investing this money, instead of putting it in a savings account?

Jill Dear Jill, If I’m in your shoes, I’d choose college as the focal point over the other things you’ve mentioned. My advice would be to move that money into a 529 Plan with mutual funds inside. That way, it will grow tax-free from this point forward. Then, if you continue to set $50 a month aside for her for seven more years—and the stock market averages 11 to 12 percent—you’d have about $16,000 sitting there when she turned 18. That wouldn’t fully pay for college, but it’d be a great start. Plus, she can apply for scholarships and grants and work and save to help make it happen.

As far as a car is concerned, I’d set up a separate savings account and agree to match whatever she saves. That way, if she can put aside $3,000 to $4,000, with the match she’ll have a pretty nice car.

But in my mind, college is the most important thing here. If you guys can afford these contributions, and she wants to go to college and will hold up her end of the deal, you can work together as a family and make the idea of a college education a reality!

Dear Dave, Should families who are struggling to pay off debt still give their kids commissions for doing chores?

Steve Dear Steve, Yes, but it doesn’t have to be a lot of money. Kids seldom get paid an amount that is equal to what the chore is worth.

To be perfectly honest, the chores most kids do—especially the little ones—aren’t worth that much. I wouldn’t pay a kid five dollars a day, or even per week, to feed the dog. I mean, it takes less than 30 seconds to scoop the food into the bowl!

When it comes to paying kids commissions for chores, the biggest thing we’re trying to do is find teachable moments. We want the kids to learn that money is tied to work.Then, when they have some money, we want to teach them about the three uses for money—spending, saving and giving.

Teaching them wise ways to do those three things while you’re teaching them to work is the key. And you can do that for a small amount of money.

Chilympics cook-off recognizes award-winning chili recipes The judges have spoken, and Debra Hunt was awarded the first place prize in Downers Grove’s inaugural Chilympics chili cook-off.

It was a fiery competition at the event on Saturday, Sept. 28 at Fishel Park in Downers Grove.

Award-winning chili recipes were prepared throughout the day at this International Chili Society (ICS) sanctioned event, and delicious samples were later on enjoyed by spectators.

Hunt was awarded a $600 cash prize and will advance to the World Finals this October, located in Palm Springs, Calif.

Prizes were awarded in five categories: • 1st Place to Debra Hunt – chosen by official Chilympics judges • 2nd Place to Mike Goodman – chosen by official Chilympics judges • 3rd Place to John Pastore – chosen by official Chilympics judges

News Briefs Downers Grove celebrates National Friends of Libraries Week National Friends of Libraries Week is Oct. 20 through 26 and the Downers Grove Friends of the Library (FOL) is celebrating it with its ninth annual book sale, titled “Bon Appetit, Bon Noir and Bon Voyage”, to be held Oct. 25 and Oct. 26.

This is one of the largest book sales in the area devoted to a certain type of book.All titles are priced very affordably, with hardcovers at $2 and $3 each and paperbacks at 50 cents.

“We are proud to support our library, one of the best in the western suburbs.We hope readers in the Downers Grove area will come to our book sale for some incredible titles, at very reasonable rates,” said FOL President Joni Hansen.

The book sale will occur on Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.The book sale will

take place in the Meeting Room at the Downers Grove Library, 1050 Curtiss Street.

Lisle Woman’s Club participates in Veteran’s Affairs Stand Down The Lisle Woman’s Club is again supporting the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Stand Down initiative.

Stand Down is a collaborative effort to provide services to homeless veterans, who comprise a large percentage of the homeless in the Chicago area.

The Woman’s Club is collecting new unisex socks (tube socks) to give to the veterans. Donations of socks can be dropped off through Oct. 26 at: Lisle Savings Bank (Main Street and Maple Avenue locations), Lisle Park District, Lisle VFW,Trinity Church Grounds for Hope Café, Lisle Library, Lisle High School Key Club, and to any Woman’s Club member.
