St. Joseph hosts kindergarten STEM Day STEM day consisted of six stations encompassing each of key areas St. Joseph School recently piloted a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) day in their kindergarten classrooms through fun and engaging hands-on activities and experiments. The goal of STEM day was to allow students to be creative and innovative, provide opportunities to explore different science and engineering concepts, and challenge their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills in a fun environment.

The STEM day consisted of six stations encompassing each of the key STEM areas. One of the stations included a zSpace virtual reality computer.

Through zSpace, students were able to experience the butterfly life cycle, dissect a frog, and explore other mechanical models in a 3D, lifelike, interactive, and immersive environment. “ Virtual reality is transforming

how students can learn. Students are amazed by zSpace because they can move and manipulate objects in 3D, and experiment in a safe, virtual environment,” said Catherine Ho, St. Joseph School parent and coordinator of STEM day. In another station, students used magnetic tiles and collaborated with each other to create buildings and bridges that sustained weight and movement.

To study force and motion, students conducted experiments with ramps on textbooks and flat surfaces. Students explored their creative and artistic side while learning about magnetism by drawing magnetic doodles created from iron fillings.

Finally, students had an opportunity to study chemical reactions through vinegar and baking soda explosions, and milk and dish soap interactions.

The students overwhelmingly enjoyed STEM day and learning about the different STEM concepts. “As the next generation of innovators, we need to prepare our

students with the critical and problem-solving skillsets for jobs of the future,” said Principal Rita Stasi.

“By integrating STEM curriculum at an early age and incorporat-

ing it into our program, students will have ongoing opportunities to develop the necessary skills to be the inventors and visionaries of tomorrow.”

Dolce’s is reopening in Westmont under new ownership as early as February.

In a 4-1 vote on Jan. 19 the Westmont Village Board of Trustees approved a request for operation of the restaurant in the B-1 limited business district and a Class D liquor license.

“Jason and I are very excited to reopen Dolce’s restaurant keeping it a staple of the downtown Westmont business district,” part-owner Greg Notbusch said.

“Dolce’s will remain a warm and friendly place for all to enjoy great food and wine… But now adding our combined business, restaurant and culinary skills, we’re going to expand and elevate the quality of service and most importantly the food. Our hope is to not only create a successful Westmont restaurant, but have it become an anchor of the downtown district that will hopefully attract more new business into the Westmont area.”

Dolce’s closed its operations at 15 Quincy St. on Dec. 31, 2016.

“Not that long ago, we had learned that Dolce’s, the previous owner of Dolce’s, was going to be closing the restaurant and moving onto other things,” Notbusch said.

“We saw this as an opportunity not only as obviously a good business investment, but keeping a restaurant here in the business (district) here in Westmont and maintaining the Quincy block address and not letting the business go vacant.”

Mayor Ron Gunter acknowledged the enthusiasm exuded by Notbusch and his business partner, Jason Van Lente, to get the restaurant up and running again.

“This is a success of a business that closes and then it gets reopened relatively quickly,” he said.

Dolce’s will reopen without making changes to the name, but will tweak their menu. The restaurant will even retain some of the same employees from the previous own-

Notbusch said he and his business partner look forward to starting this business venture in Westmont.

“We’re both of us strong advocates of the community of Westmont,” he said. “We’re really excited to make this happen. We know can make it a great success.”

Trustee James Addington raised an issue regarding Dolce’s liquor licensing; questioning the steps the board should take in considering the request.

“Should we act on [the new business item reducing the village’s liquor license count] first before we approve the new [license request] in the same location?” he asked.

“Should we eliminate the old one first and then go to this [agenda item requesting for new license] or does it matter? They’re different corporations.”

“Since it’s on the same agenda, . . . [so that] immediately following the increase in liquor licenses you’ll be decreasing it,” he said. “The fact that it appeared this way doesn’t matter, ” clarified Village Attorney John Zemanek.

VARIANCE OK’D FOR STORE REAR YARD Recent village board action also approves a series requests including a zoning variance the construction of a new building addition within a required rear yard setback in the B-2 general business district, a zoning variance to increase the number of allowable signs and site and landscaping plan approval for the ALDI store at 6415 S. Cass Ave.

The chain is in the middle of a remodel renovation project across the United States.

Chris Stair, real estate director of ALDI, said the Westmont location is one of the stores expected to see change.

“We are planning on expanding it for numerous reasons,” he said.

“One is because we are going to be expanding our product line—adding a lot more fresh, refrigeratedtype products to the store. But in addition, we also want to upgrade the store to more of our prototypical-type exterior appearance as well as interior.”

ALDI stores in Wheaton and Darien had some remodeling in recent years.

“We want to make this happen and continue our corporate relationship with Westmont through the next 20, 30 years, whatever it may be,” Stair said. “I’m excited to get this down and show you where we’re going with ALDI today.”

Village board action is contingent on plans to maintain a 20-foot setback to adjacent residences and landscape improvements.

The project will take roughly 15 weeks to complete.

“We will be closed for approximately five weeks during that time when we have to do a lot of the major renovation on the inside with the refrigeration and taking out the ceiling and putting in new HVAC, things of that nature,” Stair said.

“There will be some shut down, but we will be open during part of the construction and obviously, do our best to keep it as clean and neat for the consumer.”

ADMINISTRATOR RETIRES, LEAVING LEGACY OF SERVICE BEHIND January 13 marked the last day that Kathleen Rush served as Village Administrator for the Village of Woodridge. Rush worked for the Village from 1985 to 1997, when she left for a position with the Village of Riverside. Rush was drawn back to Woodridge in 2009, hired as the Village Administrator. She retires with over 20 years of service to the Village of Woodridge and nearly 35 in local government.

TRUSTEE PAMELA BEAVERS RESIGNS After serving the Woodridge community for 24 years, Pamela Beavers resigned her position as Village Trustee. Ms. Beavers has served as a Village Trustee for the past fifteen years. Before joining the Village Board in 2002, Ms. Beavers began serving the Woodridge community as a member of the Village’s ADA Committee.

She later went on to become a commissioner on the Police Pension Board and the Village’s Plan Commission.

Mayor Cunningham noted Beaver’s professionalism and ability to bring a common sense approach to many difficult decisions.

“Pam could be counted on to evaluate all aspects of difficult decisions. She consistently placed a priority on what was best for the entire community and refrained from parochial decisions that would benefit only a few. Her efforts to support the business community, while focused on the quality of life in Woodridge and fiscal responsibility, made her a great elected official, she said.

A frequent question that the Village receives is whether the charges can be regulated. The answer is no, the Village does not have regulatory authority over the prices set by companies providing television service. Under the Cable Act of 1984 as well as the Cable Act of 1992 and 1996, the Village’s power to regulate price, customer service or where service is extended has been eliminated. Hospitals penalized for harming patients Government has penalized hospitals in an effort to prevent avoidable patient deaths in hospitals Anyone facing a hospital stay for themselves or a family member should look at new data the government released right before Christmas showing that it http://khn.org/news/769-hospitals-penalized-for-patient-safety-in2017-data-table/ penalized 769 of the nation’s hospitals for having high rates of patient injuries. The monetary penalties – a reduction for the year in their reimbursement for treating Medicare patients – do bite. Larger teaching hospitals could lose as much as $1 million or more.

This is the third year the government has penalized hospitals in an effort to prevent avoidable patient deaths in hospitals, which emerged as a big issue about 18 years ago. This year the government added injuries caused by MRSA and C diff infections to their list of other harmful conditions patients contract in a hospital such as urinary tract and surgical site infections resulting from hysterectomies and colon procedures. MRSA – a staphylococcus bacterium - can cause pneumonia and bloodstream infections. C diff is a germ that can multiply in the gut when patients are taking other antibiotics to kill other germs.

While some facilities like those serving children and psychiatric patients and critical care hospitals are exempt from penalties, this year’s data show that more than 200 facilities, including some of the nation’s most well-known

hospitals, have the dubious distinction of being on the government’s penalty list for all three years. They include the Cleveland Clinic, Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago and Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital. The message for patients: A hospital’s TV advertising campaign for its great cancer care may obscure significant safety issues.

Have penalties and other harm reduction initiatives made hospital care safer?

This time 347 hospitals penalized last year are not on the bad-guy list, which shows that some are paying attention.

But hospital injuries have not vanished.

The federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality says there were 3.8 million hospital injuries last year. That translates to 115 injuries per 1,000 patient stays.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria infect some two million people annually. One quarter of a million cases occur in hospitals.

I wanted to know why more progress hasn’t been made. While the new government data reflect improvements at many hospitals, why is there still such a long way to go? I rang up Lisa McGiffert, the head of Consumers Union’s Safe

Patient Project who has been a leading voice since 2004 to bring attention to infections and medical errors. She told me there’s been a significant shift in the way hospitals view infections. Twelve years ago they used to say they were not preventable. “Now, most people in healthcare believe most infections are.”

In the early days of her campaign, government agencies like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were reluctant to back public reporting of hospital mistakes and other data to help patients. Now they support it. Still, she says, “what I am most frustrated about is the lack of urgency in the country and at the agencies for eliminating these infections. They are aware of them, but there’s not a sense of urgency to stop them.”

The financial penalties levied by the Medicare agency have made a significant difference because they get the hospital CEO’s attention. Unless the CEO is involved, change is not going to happen.

But the penalties along with the entire program to eliminate hospital-acquired conditions were authorized under the Affordable Care Act. They could be in jeopardy if the law is repealed. Some hospitals probably would be happy if they disappeared.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR DEAR EDITOR, Donald Trump has nominated fast-food CEO Andrew Puzder to lead the Labor Department. This is a bad choice for working people.

This pick betrays the spirit of the Trump campaign and threatens to leave working people more vulnerable to abusive employers.

Puzder opposes raising the minimum wage and says workers don’t need overtime and should instead be happy with a “sense of accomplishment.”

Puzder has used his position and authority as a fastfood CEO to enrich himself at the expense of working people by violating labor law. One investigation found that more than half of the Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s restaurants

reviewed weren’t paying workers what they were owed.

He refused to pay his managers the overtime they earned and said he’d like to replace human workers with machines, because machines “never take a vacation… there’s never a slip-and-fall, or an age, sex or race discrimination case.”

People who work at his restaurants make poverty wages while he made more money last year in one day than one of his full-time minimum wage workers makes in a year.

All of these reasons make Puzder unfit to run the agency tasked with protecting people at work.

American Water presents grant This year, approximately $49,600 will be awarded to 62 fire departments The Lisle-Woodridge Fire Department is purchasing new smoke alarms for the community, thanks to a grant from Illinois American Water (IAW). The IAW 2016 Firefighter Grant Program provides financial assistance to fire and emergency organizations serving communities in its service areas.

This year, approximately $49,600 will be awarded to 62 fire departments. To date, the program has resulted in over 350 grants totaling over $342,000 awarded across the state.

“Our teams partner closely with fire departments, testing and operating every fire hydrant across the state and working hard to ensure reliable water service for fire protection, but we wanted to do more,” said Bruce Hauk, president of Illinois American Water. “This program enables us to further support our local heroes in the communities we serve.”

Grants of up to $700 are awarded to cover the costs as-

sociated with the following: personal protective gear, communications equipment, firefighting tools and water handling equipment.

The grants also help provide training and related activities/ materials used to support community fire protection; and reimbursement for specific fire training classes, including training manuals and workbooks “On behalf of the Lisle-Woodridge Fire Protection District I would like to thank Illinois American Water for awarding us a grant through your Firefighter Grant Program,’ said Neil Berkowitz, public education specialist of Lisle-Woodridge during the check presentation.

Department earns Class 1 ISO rating Insurance Services Office (ISO) evaluates communities and their fire departments “I want to thank all of our fire department personnel, and village staff who have worked long and hard to make this happen,” said Westmont Fire Chief David Weiss.

“This is the first time that a parttime/combination department in the State of Illinois has achieved a Class 1 ISO rating and is also an accredited agency. This speaks to the dedication and commitment that Westmont has to our emergency services in the community.”

The Insurance Services Office (ISO) evaluates communities and

their fire departments throughout the country. Each community is given a Public Protection Classification from 1 to 10 with 1 being the highest rating. Approximately 200 fire departments, less than one percent of the more than 30,000 departments in the United States, are ISO Class 1.

Lisle wins opener of I-8 Conference tournament with only seven players in uniform

The Lisle girls basketball team hoped to become the little team that could.

Playing with a depleted roster the Lions opened the Interstate 8 Conference Tournament with a 47-23 victory over Wilmington on Thursday, Jan. 19 in Lisle.

TyAnn LeGrand-Melton led Lisle (15-8) with 15 points, 11 rebounds and six steals. The Lions, who were the No. 5 seed in the league tournament, played No. 4 seed and host Coal City on Saturday, Jan. 21. Lisle won the previous two meetings this season.

The winner of that advanced to the semifinals, on Monday, Jan. 23, which were also at Coal City.

The Wildcats (1-18) were seeded 12th out of the 12 conference teams.

“We had nine varsity players, but Ahniya Melton [a freshman guard who is Legrand-Melton’s younger sister] suffered a knee

injury and is out for the year,” Lisle coach Nick Balaban said.

“And [junior center] Kendra Raymond has been out with a concussion. We hope to have her back by [this] week.

“We only had seven players dressed [against Wilmington], so we were a bit fatigued and tired and had to pick our spots to give someone a rest. But the girls gave a great effort. Our thing all year has been if we can defend and rebound, we can do well.”

LeGrand-Melton, a senior guard/forward, was one of the key points of the defense with her steals.

Wilmington had 25 turnovers, 16 of those in the first half.

“Just energy, playing together and not forcing things,” she said of the keys to her teams success with only a limited roster.

“We anticipate a lot and that’s a strength. What I like about this team is our chemistry. We all like

Trojans host own invite The Downers Grove North Boys Swim and Dive Team hosted its annual Trojan Invite on Jan. 20 and 21.

Lyons Township’s Varsity team placed first overall followed by Naperville Central in second place. Naperville Central won the Fresh/Soph competition, with Metea Valley coming in second. The DGN Varsity team tied for fifth place, and the DGN freshman/sophomore team placed seventh.

Varsity Trojans Ben Ellstrom, Jack Costello, Eric Marconi and Matt Benge took fourth place in the 200 medley relay event.

In the 200 yard freestyle relay, the DGN team of Marcanio, David Waitley, Aidan Lyons, and Daniel Sumida placed sixth.

BOWLING Lisle freshman Brandon Williamson advanced to the IHSA state boys bowling tournament by winning the Glenbard East Regional with a total pinfall of 1,372.

Williamson defeated second place by 32 pins and was ahead of third by 68.

Only five bowlers broke 1.300 for the meet.

Slow start hurts Benet in loss to Marist

When a team is the back-toback Class 4A state champion as Benet is, it knows how take a tough loss and move on.

That is what the Redwings have to do following a 64-45 loss to East Suburban Catholic Conference foe Marist.

The Redwings (19-3, 3-1) know that a regular season loss does not define a season.

“I told the girls two years ago, we lost three games and won state,” Benet coach Joe Kilbride said.

“Last year, we lost three games and won state. This was our third loss. The only thing that is the end of the world is the end of the world. Hopefully, this is a bit of a wake up call and we bring a different mindset to practice and daily

preperation and we will find out how we rebound from this and what we are made of.”

As long as they can right the ship heading into the state series, the Redwings have as good of a chance as anyone to compete for a title.

“That is the plan.” Kilbride said.

“All year we try and prepare ourselves to give us the best opportunity when we get to the middle of February. We try and win every game, but the goal is not to go undefeated, it is to be ready at the end.”

When it comes to the game against Marist, Kilbride said it wasn’t the gameplan that fell apart.

“We got beat tonight,” Kilbride said. “They were the better team in every facet. They outran us which has been our thing and we weren’t

able to press them and they shot the ball extremely well - or at least it felt like it to me. I don’t think it was any Xs and Os. “They were good. We were not very good defensively and they took advantage.”

For Benet, Kilbride said the team has to begin to start games better.

“We have beeen starting poorly and if you do that a team starts thinking it can win a game and then all of a sudden – they can,” he said. “We have to do a better job of coming out of the blocks. It has been a pattern for us and not a good pattern. We tell them it can happen to us and tonight I think it did.”

Marist just one more in line of tough games

When Benet coach Gene Heidkamp sets the schedule for the Redwings – he does so knowing the team will be challenged in nonconference and tournament games.

Throw in an always loaded East Suburban Catholic Conference that is getting better every year and there are very few cake walks on the slate.

Friday night’s opponent, Marist, was one of the tough games on the slate and Benet caught a hungry team coming off its first loss of the season.

“They played really good defense and we didn’t shoot the ball well,” Heidkamp said. “We were two steps behind all the

way.

“The bottom line is we need to play better all along. At one point we were chasing nine tonight and fought back and had a chance to take the lead – we had a three that was in and out.”

Heidkamp knows it is hard to look at big wins when they play the type of schedule they do.

“I think this is the ups and downs of good high school basketball and if you look at our schedule, this is maybe the 10th game in a row where we are just playng murderer’s row,” he said.

“You need to play consistient, good basketball and for the most part, we have done that, but we are playing great teams.

“This was a 20-1 team that we played tonight. We played a 17-2 team the other night and we have played the Simeon’s

of the world, so if you look at the schedule, we would liked to have won a few more of the close games, but we have won our share.”

While Benet does not want to lose games, its main goal in winning in the playoffs.

“In the big picture, it makes us better, it is just a tough pill to swallow during the course of the season,” Heidkamp said. “I think I have a gaood perspective in dealing with a high school basketball. We only lost four games last year and we played really well at the start (of this year). And we are still playing well, we just hit a part of our schedule that is really tough and we have to play at a really high level consistently to beat the PHOTO BY MARK GREGORY

Lisle never trailed. We the game tied 2-2, a steal and layup with 5:23 left in the first quarter by sophomore guard McKenzie Weaver (10 points, 6 rebounds) started an 8-0 run that put the Lions ahead 10-2. They led 10-4 at the end of the first quarter.

The Wildcats trimmed the lead to 10-6 in the opening minutes of the second quarter. But a free throw by LeGrand-Melton with 6:05 to play in the first half started an 18-2 blitz which ended the quarter and put Lisle ahead 28-8 at halftime. LeGrand-Melton had five points in the spurt and Weaver added four as the Wildcats committed nine turnovers in the second quarter alone.

“We just had to play four minutes of intensity,” LeGrandMelton said of the second quarter burst.

Balaban credited LeGrandMelton for spearheading the defense.

Senior guard Nicole Cyranoski and junior guard Natalie Takahashi (6 rebounds) each added nine points for the Lions, who won the regular season conference title in the Interstate 8 two years ago, but not the tournament.

Being direct and upfront is not being mean DEAR DAVE, My friend and I are roommates, and we’ve always had an agreement that we split each of the bills 50-50. We both work and have decent jobs, but for the last couple of months she’s been really late in paying her half of the bills. She says she’s broke. I don’t want to be mean, but how can I approach her about this situation?

ALICE DEAR ALICE, I understand that you don’t want to be mean to a friend, but situations like this should be addressed quickly and directly. No matter whether you’re talking

about friendships or business dealings, to be unclear is to be unkind.

Turn off the television, sit down with her, and have a kind but firm conversation. Let her know that

the roommate agreement is no longer working because she isn’t paying her bills on time. Make sure she understands that the two of you are not going to be able to stay there together anymore unless she starts paying on time. You might also ask if she needs help budgeting her money. I mean, if she’s got a good job her money has to be going somewhere, right? The problem is that it’s not going to the proper places.

I know you think that by being subtle or avoiding the situation you’re being nice, but you’re not.

You’re being passive-aggressive.

You just have to smile and say, “This isn’t going to happen anymore. You’re going to get your act together, and I’ll help you all I can, but you need to start paying on time or the roommate situation is over.”

Is that tough love? No, it’s just love.

SEASPAR Program receives state award SEASPAR’s Adapted Music Lessons utilize specialized sensory instruments to enable participants with limited mobility Downers Grove, Ill. (January 21, 2017) – On January 19, the South East Association for Special Parks And Recreation (SEASPAR) was recognized at the annual conference of the Illinois Park and Recreation Association (IPRA) and Illinois Association of Park Districts in Chicago. SEASPAR was presented with the Program Award for its Adapted Music Lessons at the Board Meeting of the IPRA’s Therapeutic Recreation Section.

SEASPAR’s Adapted Music Lessons utilize specialized sensory instruments to enable participants with limited mobility to make music. The program is conducted in the SEASPAR’s Wonders MultiSensory Room at the Lisle Park District.

The first student in the program, 33-year-old Paul Bures of La Grange Park, is non ambulatory with extremely limited mobility, and uses his chin to play touchpad instruments and a microphone to sing. He now participates in the lessons year-round, and they have developed his interest in music, improved his gross motor skills, and increased his vocal strength.

At SEASPAR’s annual Holiday Spectacular talent showcase in 2015, Paul gave his first solo performance before an audience of 250 people. He performed the song “Fruitcake” by The Superions.

When The Superions were shown video of Paul’s performance, they responded, “This is amazing! Paul did an incredible job performing our song ‘Fruitcake.’ Thank you all so much for sharing this. We are honored!” Paul also performed at the 2016 event.
