Woodridge reflects on ‘successful’ 2015 Village officials tout strong growth and development over past year By jonathan samples bugle staff

Strong growth and community development were hallmarks of 2015 in the village of Woodridge, according to a letter released by Mayor Gina Cunningham and members of the village board.

In the letter, posted Jan. 11 on the village’s website, officials boasted that successful efforts were made to increase economic development, grow recreational

and community activities, and promote resident safety and environmental stewardship.

“The year 2015 shows a positive path for Woodridge in the years to come,” the letter stated. “Investments made in our community this year will be tremendous assets well into the future.”

Where economic development is concerned, the village worked with loan servicing company Enterprise Recovery Systems to relocate to Woodridge,

- Letter from Woodridge Officials bringing with it 650 jobs. In May, village officials also formed an intergovernmental partnership with nine nearby communities to promote commercial development of retail spaces formerly occupied by shuttered grocery store chain Dominick’s.

Communities involved in the “One Call, 10 Stores, A Million Customers” campaign, which include Romeoville and Naperville, began meeting in December 2014 to develop a comprehensive marketing campaign to attract new retailers trying to enter the Chicago-area market. The campaign involved direct emailing, phone calls, distribution of brochures at conferences and trade shows, and developing a website stocked with marketing materials such as demographic information, property representation and community contacts.

Some Woodridge businesses were also given the OK to apply for a video gaming license. In June, the village board approved an ordinance creating a process for eligible businesses to apply for the license. As many as eight licenses were made available for businesses with an A-1 or A-3

liquor license, state video gaming license and conduct restaurant services as their primary business, among other criteria.

Additionally, Woodridge officials noted village efforts to work with community members to create the Shop Woodridge Task Force to develop and enhance ways to promote shopping local.

The Woodridge Dining Guide was also produced in the fall, providing residents a list of 50 different dining options around town.

Building a community Cunningham and the village board also stressed several notable accomplishments in housing and community engagement.

Approximately 65 building permits were issued for new single-family homes in three separate subdivisions, according to the village. That growth reflects a trend that began in 2013, when 27 permits were issued, and 2014, when 30 permits were issued.

Following the 2014 approval of Fox Wood Estates, Timber Edge and Farmingdale Village subdivisions, the village said it expects close to 300 new single-family homes to be constructed by 2019.

Construction also began on the Woodridge Horizon seniorliving community, which officials said is the first such facility in the village. The village board approved the final plans for the four-story, 93-unit independent living senior housing facility in January 2015. Construction of Woodridge Horizon, located at 8099 Janes Ave., is expected to be completed in August, with its first residents moving in 2016.

In an effort to boost recreational and community events, the Woodridge Park District began construction of the Athletic Recreation Center on March 14.

The ARC will be located at 8201 S. Janes Avenue and offer athletic, recreational, and health and wellness activities for all ages, as

well as serve as a hub for other community civic and outreach services.

The park district said construction crews completed the initial parking lot stone subbase, erected 90 percent of precast concrete wall panels and installed 90 percent of structural steel for the ARC’s mezzanine section, among other progress, in 2015. Upcoming work includes completing structural steel erection and metal roof decking of the mezzanine section, as well as installing the gymnasium roof steel trusses and metal roof deck.

Once the roof of the structure is built, the park district said it will release a revised construction schedule and set an approximate opening date.

“With the opening planned for late fall of this year, the facility will offer the community great recreational and social opportunities,” village officials stated in the letter. “All told, the Janes Avenue corridor will have $50 million in investments made this year that will strengthen the community for years to come.”

In addition to these projects, the village received two awards from the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus that recognized its efforts to be more environmentally friendly.

Woodridge also launched an emergency notification system that allows residents to sign up for targeted village alerts.

“The system enables targeted messages to be set to specific geographic locations in town, and provides an automated calling feature to send out vital information regarding the Woodridge community,” the letter stated. “Keeping residents informed and safe is a key priority for the village board.”

Looking ahead to 2016, the village noted that work is planned for 192-lane miles of village roads and $10.4 million has been allocated for water and sewer system upgrades.

The mayor and village board also expressed a commitment to explore opportunities for intergovernmental collaboration in order to reduce residents’ property-tax burden.

“We look forward to these investments in our community, and to additional accomplishments in 2016,” officials added.

District 58 has narrowed the list of possible expansion options for its optional kindergarten enrichment and enhancement program to three finalists.

The board of education received

an update on OKEEP during its Jan. 11 meeting, as well as specific details on the narrowed list of options. Each of the three plans would expand the program district-wide and include special considerations for Lester School.

According to the district, Lester lacks the space to fully implement

OKEEP. Despite those space constraints, officials said all three possible solutions would allow Lester students to have access to the program.

In the first option, Lester School would only offer half-day kindergarten, but families interested in OKEEP would be able to apply for an intra-district transfer. The transfer would allow Lester students to participate in kindergarten and OKEEP at a different District 58 school, pending space availability.

The second proposal also calls for Lester to offer a traditional half-day kindergarten program, but interested families would be able to enroll their child with other Lester students in kindergarten and OKEEP at Belle Aire School.

Lastly, Lester would offer both a traditional half-day kindergarten section and one kindergarten section with OKEEP. As part of this third option, a selection process would be used to determine which students would be able

to participate in Lester’s OKEEP section. Students not selected in the lottery for OKEEP at Lester would attend kindergarten and OKEEP at Belle Aire or another school within the district.

To gather input on the narrowed list of options and community interest in OKEEP, District 58 prepared a survey for families at Lester School.

Board of education members are expected to continue discussing the three options and will consider any input from Lester families. District 58 said the board is expected to make a decision regarding OKEEP

by March 16.

Since it first formed in 1936, the Westmont Lions Club has grown into the village of Westmont’s oldest service club.

During a recent Westmont Village Board meeting, officials honored the club and approved a proclamation recognizing its 80th anniversary.

“This is exciting for the Westmont Lions Club,” said longtime member and village board member Jim Addington.

“Our recent 80th anniversary dinner was well attended and it gave us a chance to reflect on all of our accomplishments in the

The Westmont Lions Club also hosts the annual Red, White & BBQ Festival, which has become one of the largest barbecue competitions in the Midwest.

In addition to supporting area charities such as SEASPAR and the People’s Resource Center, the club has provided more than $30,000 in local scholarships over the past 15 years.

“It is our honor to serve the citizens of our community,” Lions President John Karesh said. “We look forward to continuing our commitment to the residents of Westmont for many years to come.”

Prosecutors said Briggs also received more than $30,000 from another former client in a similar fashion, and failed to pay a business associate almost $14,000 for graphics and logo work he provided.

Whatever your goal is, use as many resources as you can find: read books and websites, listen to others stories, make mental notes of what is working, and be supportive of yourself as you do one of the most daunting things a person can do, which is to make a change. One of the hardest things to overcome is our past mistakes.

Motivational speaker Andy Stanley has commented that experience alone does not make us wiser. In fact, we commonly repeat past behaviors, even if they were unsuccessful. Only by evaluating the experience and making necessary adjustments do we become wiser.

To sum up If you have started to slip in your changes, take some time to work back through the process to prepare for actions that will last. Find what’s driving you and decide what methods will work best for you going forward.

And, keep focused on seeing yourself the way you want to be. Next month, we examine the question of whether today’s teenagers use drugs more than their parents did a generation ago. I look forward to sharing my findings with you.

A wonderful start to the new year I would like to relate my elation from reading the Op-Ed “Life doesn’t have to be perfect for it to be joyful” by Daniel Smrokowski. What a wonderful column to start the new year, joyful indeed.

With the mass commercialization of the preceding holidays, he offered “some resolutions for how you can change the game for a more accepting and inclusive world.” His message of positive change,

perseverance, maximizing personal achievement and call for readers to consider the contributions by persons with special needs was in hard contrast to the divisiveness and acrimony that commands so much mass media coverage.

Also, whatever limitations his medical condition causes him are not reflected in his articles, which appear in the Bugle.

Rather, Mr. Smrokowski’s journalism is instead completely cogent, well ordered and with an eloquence that far surpasses that of many other authors.

By comparison, it is common to find columns by “professional” writers so inelegantly constructed as to be almost painful to read.

Further, he does so while avoiding the strident advocacy and victimization that often diminishes similar pieces.

WESTMONT Second half surge propels Lions in Interstate-8 rivalry game By mark gregory sPorts rePorter

Like any rivalry games, the Lisle and Westmont boys basketball game was a game of strengths – with Lisle relying on its balanced guard play, while Westmont used its star center Kyle Domin.

Both put on a show for the fans, but it was Lisle’s many that outdid Westmont’s one, helping the Lions to the 63-51 Interstate-8 win.

“They had an excellent game plan of going inside. Their strength is our underbelly and we knew it would be a tough matchup with Domin,” said Lisle coach Mark Lascala. “I thought we had the advantage on the perimeter and they had the advantage inside and that was the way it played out. We wanted the game to go up and down because when it went up and down it was in our favor.

When it was a walk-it-up slugfest, the game was in their favor and we were glad we could turn the tide in the second half.

The teams were knotted at 27

apiece at the half when the Lisle (10-8, 4-1) guards stepped up and took control of the game.

The Lions hit five of the team’s nine three pointers after the break.

“We knew mathematically that us hitting twos and them hitting threes was going to be a problem, so we needed to get quality shots every possession and we just had too many turnovers,” said Westmont coach Craig Etheridge.

“Their strength is in their guards.

They have a lot of kids that can handle the ball, pass the ball and shoot the ball and our strength is in our post play and our guards had a hard time putting points on the board and in the second half, they had a hard time feeding the post.”

Part of the problem with the post feeds was the Lisle defenders making it more difficult for Westmont to get the ball in to Domin.

Juniors spark Benet in win over Notre Dame

Benet Academy is known for its three senior leaders, all of whom are averaging more than 10 points per game.

However, in its 62-45 win over Notre Dame College Prep Thursday, it was a pair of juniors who stole the show.

Liam Lyman scored 19 points, 15 in the second half on 4-of-5 threes in the second half, while Jack Nolan added 16 points in the Redwing win.

“It’s awesome,” Lyman said. “We have five guys in the starting lineup who can score and put points on the board. My teammates found me and made the extra pass. They start three post players and we start five guards, so it is hard for them to chase us around screens

and stuff.”

“I think we just stepped up,” Nolan said. “We shot in the flow of the offense. People got us in the right spots.”

With playing such a tough early season schedule, the juniors were able to gain valuable experience that is paying off.

“They have gotten their feet wet and have played in some big games. Any type of nerves or inexperience is kind of going away. On any given night we have five or six guys who can have big nights,” Benet coach Gene Heidkamp said. “I think that bodes well for our team.”

It was a tight first half with Benet leading 27-23 at the break after a three-pointer by James Dockery to beat the buzzer for the Redwings.

That was all the momentum they needed as they went on a

23-4 run in the second half to pull away.

“The defense translated onto the offensive end and we started hitting shots,” Nolan said. “We knocked down shots at the right time. Coach told us we needed to defend harder and we did.

We started defending with more urgency.”

“My teammates were getting in the lane and kicking it out to me,” Lyman said. “Coach got on us at halftime to get the defense to step up and we got it done.”

The Redwings were strong on both ends of the court, while the Dons couldn’t stop the hot shooting.

“I thought we not only made big shots, our defense was much better in the third quarter,” Heidkamp said. “I thought in the first half we weren’t playing as good of defense as we are

accustomed to and those things go hand in hand. We started moving the ball better and made some shots.”

“They deserved to win,” Notre Dame coach Tom Les said. “They outplayed us in every facet. They shot it better. They played harder.

They played better defense. They executed and we did not. This is a game where you get what you deserve and they deserved to

win.”

The Redwings finished the game 10-of-20 from three-point range and shot 48 percent for the game from the floor as they outscored the Dons 30-9 from three.

“They shot it well, but we didn’t defend it well in my opinion,” Les said. “Benet is very well coached and they run their stuff very well.

“We tried to limit his touches and he had 26, but I felt like he had 50,” Lascala said. “He is a strong kid and he is a problem.”

Part of the disruption on Domin came from Lisle’s Mark McGrath, who at 6-2 drew the task to guard Domin.

“They are both really good athletes, only Kyle has three more inches. We needed to get Mark some more help and I think we did that in the second half,” Lascala said. “Mark is a warrior. He is a complete player who plays both

As a unit, the Lions know their size limitations and know how to deal with it.

“We will never outsize a team because our tallest guy is 6-1, but we have a lot of grit and we have tenacious guards and we have been playing with each other a while,” Ryan Gillen. “We all communicate and feed off each other.”

While Domin tallied the bulk of his team’s points, Lisle had more of a balanced approach as McGrath paced the team with 17, Adalberto Gutierrez scored 15, while Nick Massura added 14 and Gillen chipped in 12.

“It is great when we have four guys in double figures and we share the ball. With a great team win like this, it is fun and when we all score, it just makes it all the better,” Gillen said. “We have been playing together since seventh or eighth grade, so if I don’t have a shot, I don’t even have to look, I can just swing the ball and I will find someone who will knock it down.”

Heartbreaking losses are becoming a haunting trend for Westmont (3-13, 1-5).

“We have lost four games in the last minute of the game,” Etheridge said. “We have lost on buzzer beaters twice. We lost by four when it was a one or two point game and we missed a shot and had to foul. We are competitive we just can’t get over the hump right now. We lost Tuesday to Elmwood Park on a three-point play the old fashioned way at the buzzer. We were up by two, the kid made a layup, we fouled, he hit the free throw and we lost. We played a good game.

“I am hoping that in the second half, we catch some breaks.”
