Mayors united in opposition to annexation Mayors of Naperville, Lisle, Woodridge and Warrenville stood in unity

The mayors of Naperville, Lisle, Woodridge and Warrenville stood in unity during a Jan. 9 press conference, to address the growing chatter in the community regarding the circulation of annexation petitions.

Petitions were anonymously filed on Jan. 3 in the DuPage Circuit Court to put a referendum question on the ballot to annex Woodridge,

Lisle and Warrenville to Naperville.

Woodridge Mayor Gina Cunningham said it was important for area mayors to clear up any confusion and other feelings stirred among residents in light of these filings.

“Being here today, it stresses I think something that came through very clearly,” she said. “Right away when this (petition) came forth, each of us joined together and worked together to find answers to some of the questions before us today. Each of the communities that

are here represented are independent communities, thriving and that’s the way we want to stay.”

As of Jan. 9, more than 30 residents had signed onto the formal objection to the petitions presented to the DuPage Circuit Court.

Lisle Mayor Joe Broda questioned the intent behind the petitioner’s effort to collect signatures; to the extent that confusion stirred among residents.

“This petition kind of has a lot of our residents up in arms, ‘what’s going on?’” he asked. “ ‘How can this happen? How can the law allow a handful of residents who don’t live in your community, circulate

a petition and file it.’ We looked at those petitions, and that’s why they’re being challenged.”

Naperville Mayor Steve Chirico agreed.

Chirico said it is his belief that circulating annexation petitions were more a “political stunt” than a legitimate effort to serve the greater good of the people.

Broda refuted the idea that efforts to approve referendum questions would be successful.

“Of the petitions that were filed a majority of those petitions are names that don’t match addresses in the village of Lisle,” he said.

“We’re also looking at the possibility of some fraud of signatures, of how they were solicited.”

To address concerns about taxpayer money being spent to stop the annexation questions from appearing on the ballot, Chirico said the more significant expense would be time wasted.

“If this indeed got on the ballot, then there would significant expense to educate the public as to what was going on,” he said. “All of which could be fruitless from our perspective.”

The petitions circulating included 51 signatures for Woodridge, 219

for Lisle and 81 for Warrenville.

In order for the referendum questions to pass upon review for validity, the petitioner would need 230 Woodridge signatures, 182 Lisle signatures and 178 Warrenville signatures.

There wasn’t an annexation petition circulating in Naperville to collect signatures. To this concern, Chirico said it’s odd how the city is now tasked with the idea of placing an annexation referendum question on the April election ballot.

“I think it is a flawed law that we’ll have to look at,” he said. “Once this is over, I hope that our legislators will look at that, and I suspect they will.”

The last day to certify a referendum question to appear on the April 4 ballot is Jan. 26.

The hope, according to Chirico, is that these neighboring communities can continue thrive as the unique towns they all identify as.

“We all have, as Mayor (Joe) Broda mentioned, very unique qualities that make this region a very, very enjoyable place to live and to raise their families,” he said. “We want to certainly protect that, preserve that for many, many years to come

Honor Dr. King’s legacy by continuing voting rights fight When democracy is weakened, it leads to what we see today We are facing a critical time for voting rights in our country. On January 9, I spoke to the Southland Ministerial Health Network at their Martin Luther King Day Spirit of Excellence Awards about the need to continue the fight for voting rights as the best way to honor Dr. King’s legacy.

Not that long ago in this country, African Americans who tried to register to vote and those who would help them register, were locked out of clerks’ offices, or worse, intimidated, beaten, even killed—so that they wouldn’t exercise their right to vote.

The 1965 Voting Rights Act helped end that violent voter suppression.

As we honor the legacy of Dr. King and those who fought for the Voting Rights Act by registering to vote and going to the polls, we must confront the ugly truth that across the country, voting rights are being threatened again. In 2013 the Supreme Court severely weakened the Voting Rights Act, giving many states wide latitude to restrict access to the polls, which they are doing with enthusiasm. We have yet to see what further damage the Supreme Court will do under the next administration.

Eleven years ago I introduced Early Voting to Illinois, and each election cycle we see significant increases in Cook County residents voting early.

We have also implemented online voter registration, same-day voter registration and expanded our election judge program to include high school students.

This year, we reached a record 3 mil-

lion registered voters in Cook County.

We have worked diligently to ensure the lists are cleaner and more accurate.

But there is still work to do, here and nationally.

Across the country, we must bring back crucial parts of the Voting Rights Act and reverse dangerous decisions on allowing money to flood our political system. It is outrageous that the Supreme Court has said that your influence will, in effect, be determined by how much money you have.

Here in Illinois, we must pass Automatic Voter Registration (AVR). AVR will save us money be streamlining the process of cleaning the voting rolls and thereby ensuring we have the cleanest rolls possible. Government agencies should harness technology to share information so that voting rolls are accurate and citizens don’t need to unnecessarily engage with multiple bureaucracies.

A functional democracy requires voting so the wishes of the electorate are supposed to guide our public policy. When democracy is weakened, it leads to what we see today: public policy that is simply not what people want. Voters do not want continuing inequality or justice that is determined based on your skin color or your wealth. Dr. King understood this. He understood the relationship between racism, economic inequality and the right to vote. Today our challenge is galvanizing our energy to continue the fight he gave his life for.

January is National Radon Awareness Month and the DuPage County Health Department is urging homeowners to be aware of the dangers of radon and have their homes tested for the presence of this odorless, tasteless and colorless gas.

In fact, the Surgeon General has warned that radon is the second

leading cause of lung cancer in the United States today, following tobacco use.

Dedicated coaches help local program win while playing safe and smart

In the today’s hypersensitive landscape, the game of football is getting a bad rap – especially at the youth level as talks of concussions and other serious injuries threaten the very existence of the sport.

There is at least one local organization and coaching staff that is working to teach the game of football the right way – and so far it seems to be working.

The Patriots Youth Travel Football team has been winning championships, sending players to the top of the high school game and beyond and doing it all with an All-Star class of coaches – all of whom make teaching the right way to play their first priority.

Leading the way in terms of coaching pedigree is former Benedictine All-American and Arena League Hall of Famer Bob McMillen.

McMillen is the only member of the current 12U Patriots staff that has a son on the team – a team that recently won the Pop Warner Super Bowl at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. Prior to taking the Patriots to titles, he was a three-time All-American for what was then Illinois Benedictine College, a fullback and linebacker from 1995-2008 in the Arena Football League where he retired as the league’s second all-time leading rusher. He was inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame in 2013.

“It is relieving,” McMillen said of coaching with the Patriots. “There is a lot less stress than when you are dealing with professional athletes and having the pressure of winning games for fans and stuff.

Being able to come home and teach the game of football to kids is exciting and fun and a breath of fresh air to watch kids develop and get better as the season goes on.

“We tell the parents that we are not a babysitting service. We are here to teach the game of football and for the kids to get better as the season goes on and if they want to play in high school or even beyond, it has to start at this level.”

Two of those players on the championship team are Downers Grove residents Sal DeLuca and Zach Bluder.

Bluder, the starting center, said the experience of playing for the title was one he will never forget.

“It was a great experience,” Bluder said. “Our coaches told us it was going to be real hard in Florida and the first game was a wakeup call for us and we pushed through it. We have a lot of special

players on this team and we work really hard.”

DeLuca agreed that the team had a once in a lifetime experience.

“It was really fun to spend the week in Florida with the team,” DeLuca said. “It was great when we faced the teams because they were a big challenge, but we were the team that won. We train really hard and we had our minds on the games and we were going to be the opponent. We used to goof around a lot and the coaches taught us to make it first that we want to win a championship and not just goof around and it paid off.”

For DeLuca, an offensive and defensive lineman, his play is not

all about himself when he is on the field. He said every time he steps on the field, he is playing for the memory of his uncle Salvatore DeLuca – who Sal is named for.

Salvatore was a member of the Downers Grove South football team and was killed in an accident at age 17 in 2001 on the way home from football practice. The Mustangs won the Class 8A state title that season.

“I am trying to be the best I can just like him,” DeLuca said. “When I first tried on his helmet and jersey, it was inspiring to know he was so good at football and I want to be just like him. It makes me SEE TEACHING PAGE 10

Rockford Lutheran too much for Mustangs

After struggling for three quarters in their Wheaton Warrenville South Martin Luther King Tournament opener, on Saturday afternoon, the Downers Grove South Mustangs, were looking up at a 50-36 deficit. The Mustangs’ first-round opponent, the Crusaders of Rockford Lutheran (9-8), shot up near 60% for three quarters and were in complete control of the game.

Led by senior guard Tyree Spencer, the Mustangs mounted a furious rally, clawing back within six points on three occasions. Spencer, who scored 10 of his game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter, ignited the Mustang comeback. Spencer’s three steals in the quarter led to numerous points for DGS, but the

Mustangs fell 65-58.

With 3:40 left in the contest senior guard D’Andre Ravens’ steal and score, brought the ‘Stangs within 52-46. With 2:43 left, Dylan Wallace (12 points, six rebounds), buried a trey, which brought the Mustangs again within six.

The Crusaders hit nine consecutive free-throws, down the stretch, to fend off DGS and after two free-throws from senior Denis Alibegovic ( 9 points), the Mustangs were again within six at 60-54, with 1:10 left.

“I am very proud of the ways the kids fought back in the fourth quarter,” Downers Grove South head coach Kris Olson said. “We played hard the whole game but just couldn’t make our shots or grab rebounds.

Rockford Lutheran (9-8), is a very well coached team and

shot the lights out.”

Twelve first half Mustang turnovers, led to a 34-24 Crusader lead at halftime. Senior Dylan Kaczmarek chipped in with 11 points for DGS. TJ Clifford added seven points.

“We were vey careless with the ball in the first half which hurt us,” Spencer said. “We really picked up our defense in the fourth quarter. We pride ourselves on getting turnovers and I played hard in the second half, doing everything I could to do to help us win.”

• In a consolation bracket game, Denis Alibegovic scored 20 points in the first quarter as Downers Grove South (11-6), rolled past Painfield South 62-39 on Saturday night.

Alibegovic, would settle for 26 points, leading the Mustangs to victory.

Weary Redwings fall to H-F in WWS South tourney

Playing their third game in 21 hours, the Redwings of Benet Academy fell just short, 48-45, in their Wheaton Warrenville South Martin Luther King Tournament quarterfinal, on Saturday afternoon, against Homewood Flossmoor (14-3). After losing a heart-breaking 76-73 East Suburban Catholic Conference battle with St. Patrick (15-2, 3-0), on Friday night, the Redwings dispatched Hinsdale South 7153, in a WWS MLK Tourney firstround game, Saturday morning.

3 1/2 hours later, the Vikings of H-F were up next.

With 3:24 left in the tightlycontested contest, the Vikings led 44-38, after H-F’s Elijah McCreary (11 points) converted the old-fashioned three-point play.

Benet’s Liam Lyman, hit 1-of-2 at the free-throw line. A longrange three-pointer from junior David Buh, pulled the Redwings

within 44-42, with 1:41 left. The Vikings, Jeff Boyd nailed a jumper for a 46-42 Viking lead, with 1:15 left. Time out. Redwings.

Benet Academy head coach Gene Heidkamp drew up a perfect play, as Lewis University-bound Jack Nolan ( eight points), buried a three-pointer, to pull the ‘Wings within one, at 46-45, with a minute left. With weary legs the final Benet shots just did not fall. Boyd nailed two free throws with 20 seconds left for a 48-45 lead and the final two Redwing shots fell short.

“H-F is a very good team.

They had the same, threegames in 21 hour stretch, as we did,” Heidkamp said. “They really tagged us defensively, which added to our weariness. Liam (Lyman) really raised his game today and after a sensational game last night against St. Pat’s and a 20-point performance against Hinsdale South, Jack Nolan just ran out of gas.”

Lyman led the Redwings with

21 points and 12 rebounds. For the day Lyman scored 49 points and hauled down 19 rebounds.

6-foot-7, 220 pound freshman Colin Crothers, scored five points and hauled down seven rebounds.

“Both teams were tired today,” Lyman said. “We didn’t step up to the challenge that was put before us. I was shooting the ball well and once again, my teammates were able to get me the ball, in great position to score.

We have to step up on Monday and win a pair of games here.”

• In the Redwings WWS MLK tourney opener at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, led by Liam Lyman and Jack Nolan, Benet Academy (12-4) rolled past Hinsdale South 71-53. As DeLuca and the other Patriots try and play to their best – they know they are doing so with the best coaches around.

“The kids all know where I came from and what I have done, but this was my seventh national championship I won with the Patriots organization. We don’t go out and recruit kids, the kids that come out are the kids that we are going to try to be successful with,” McMillen said. “Being able to play for 13 years and then coach (in the Arena League) may give me a leg up on some coaches, but it is all about teaching the game the right way. That decreases injury and helps kids become better football players.

They know that when you are being taught by a guy who has been there and done that in college and professionally and being successful in the youth programs as a coach, it helps. The kids that sign up, they know who they want to play for. I stress to parents to do your homework before you sign your kid up for a football league and make sure the coaches that you are trusting your son to play for know what they are talking about. I am not bad mouth any program – but they have to see who will be coaching their son. Is it an armchair dad who has never played the game or is it someone who knows what they are talking about that has been around the game and been around youth football and can teach the proper techniques. We teach proper tackling techniques and a lot of programs just want to see who can

hit harder and that is the wrong way to do it. That is how you get your injuries. In the 12 years I have been around youth football, we have only had three concussions and two of them were from a kid hitting the ground.”

McMillen is not the only highly acclaimed coach in the organization as Doug DiFusco, former Nazareth Academy assistant coach and current offensive coordinator at Bolingbrook High School, is the longest tenured Patriots’ coach at 11 years in the organization and hasn’t had a son playing since 2009.

“We are all just coaches who love to develop kids and make sure they are prepared for high school, but we want ours to jump off the page when they get to high school,” DiFusco said. “That means kids who are freshmen, who if they are needed to or given the opportunity, can compete at

the varsity level. We have had a lot of them over the years.”

DiFusco said the program’s success in turning out quality athletes has been the reason for the growth of the program to communities outside its Naperville base.

“I think the most important thing that we see are coaches not doing it the right way and what we are seeing now because of the success of the program is we have kids from all over,” he said.

“We have kids from Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Joliet, Oswego, Aurora, Plainfield, Chicago, Wheaton, you name it. We have kids coming from all over to play Patriots football because the see that we develop kids the right way. We teach the fundamentals the same from when they are six-years-old.”

That influx of other communities makes playing for the Patriots more fun for the athletes.

“It is real fun to have people from

everywhere,” Bluder said. “Every year I make a lot of new friends on the team and that makes it an even better experience.”

Both DiFusco and McMillen know that influx of players is because parents are seeing the kids being taught the right way and while they are successful, it is not all about the wins and losses.

“They go hand in hand. If you are winning, you are teaching the kids the right way to play football and if you are teaching kids the right way to play football, you are winning,” McMillen said. “It is not just the 12U team that won nationals, we are all successful.

“It is awesome for us to see kids that we coached for years have success in high school or get a college scholarship. It is great to know that something I did early in that kid’s life allowed him to not only go out and be a great football player, but a great human being.”

Dissolve the LLC? DEAR DAVE, My wife and I are debt-free, plus she has a business giving music lessons. We formed an LLC last year when she had several students and was making over $3,000 a month, but that all changed when our first baby arrived. Now, she has only a few students, and they bring in around $700 per month. Should we dissolve the LLC? BEN DEAR BEN, First, congratulations on being debt-free and new parents. Happy New Year to you all!

In most states, the only upfront cost for an LLC is the money you pay for the initial set up. There may be a small fee for a business license and subsequent annual renewal, but that generally doesn’t add up to much. Then, there’s the money you pay for filing your tax return on the LLC once a year. Even if you live in a state where there are other

fees to consider, as long as the cost of maintaining the LLC wasn’t killing you, I’d recommend keeping it in place. You went to the trouble of opening it, and you just might use it again someday. Even if your wife is staying home with the baby, she just might be able to take on more students again as time goes by.

Just be reasonable and use common sense. If you spend $3,000 to stay open, and you’re making $700, you’d dissolve it, right? But as long as you don’t have fees that are making you cringe, I’d probably leave it in place.

—DAVE DEAR DAVE, My dad has been really bad with money his entire life. Anytime he would get into trouble, my grandparents would always bail him out.

This time he came to my wife and I, asking for $350 to get out of overdraft at the bank. We’re trying to live on a budget and get control of our finances, and $350 would make things kind of tight at the moment.

What do you think we should do?

JEREMY DEAR JEREMY, I understand feeling an obligation to help your dad. But there’s a lesson here that dad needs to learn, and it’s something that goes much deeper than the money or helping out a family member.

You have to do the right thing, no matter how dad reacts to this. Right now, the right thing is taking care of your family and not putting them in jeopardy. So my answer to dad would be “no.” Another thing that needs to happen is for the definition of “help” to change. When you say he’s been irresponsible with money his whole life, giving him $350 won’t help — and it will make you an enabler. Just handing him $350 will actually hurt him, and it will give him the idea he can continue being dumb with money and hit you up for cash anytime.

Like I said, I understand the pull of helping out a parent. So if you feel this is something you absolutely must do, I would advise making the $350 contingent on the fact that he begin and complete a financial counseling course. Be gentle when you talk to him, and let him know it hurts to see him struggling. But let him know, too, it’s his responsibility to work through his debts and take care of his own finances!

Tri-County 4-H teams take home awards 5th Annual 4-H Bridge Bust Competition took place on Jan. 7 Families, community members, 4-H’ers, and school students from DuPage, Kane and Kendall counties put their engineering skills to the test in the Fifth Annual 4-H Bridge Bust Competition on Jan. 7.

After weeks of bridge building and a morning of bridge busting, teams walked away with more than ribbons or trophies.

“This year, we celebrated five years of promoting engineering, innovation and creativity,” said Jo Ann Britton, 4-H Youth Development Program Coordinator with University of Illinois Extension.

“The Bridge Bust competition provides area youth and families with a unique way to challenge their brains, work together and learn about engineering principles, all while having fun.”

In all, 24 teams completed bridges and participated in the 2017 event with 4-H Youth Development through University of Illinois Extension, and partners Rural King of Plano and Fox Valley Family YMCA. The top prize for structural efficiency went to Michael and Zoe Wareman, a father-daughter team from Oswego, whose bridge held 22 pounds and earned a rating of 344.818, and the father-son team of Steve and Jacob Gugala earned the overall aesthetics award for the second year in a row.

For weeks, registered teams designed and built bridges – each with the same provided materials and guidelines. On Jan. 7, teams competed in several divisions: family, youth, elementary, middle school and high school. Aesthetics was judged based on provided

specifications, the quality of craftsmanship, sound structural design and originality. Structural efficiency ratings were calculated based on the weight of that bridge and the maximum weight supported by it.

In addition, a new team choice was added this year to give younger students, ages 5 to 9, the opportunity to practice engineering and design skills without competition.

These non-competitive division teams were able to conference with judges, with the option to

break their bridges in an exposition category. During the judging and tabulating portions of the day, participants and spectators alike had the opportunity to witness robotics demonstrations from 4-H Club #AWESOME 2.0; to try out the 4-H National Youth Science Day activity, Drone Discovery, with 4-H Teen Science Ambassadors; and to see 4-H projects from State Fair Superior Award winners.

Attendees and teams also learned about real-world projects in construction, design and engineering from Ted Gibbons, senior associate at Desman Design Management, and Bob Latzke, a civil

and geotechnical engineer with CBI Construction Technology In addition, U.S. Representative Randy Hultgren (IL-14) attended the event to support his son’s 4-H Robotics team, and he spoke to the crowd about the importance of STEM education, opportunities and careers.

“We need to do everything we can to prepare young people to fill these roles,” said Hultgren, who also is co-chair of the Science, Space and Technology Committee.

“There are amazing opportunities out there in our communities. We are so grateful for 4-H and Extension.”

Twelve-year-old Zoe Wareman said she has been inspired by both projects at school and the Bridge Bust event to be a mechanical engineer one day. She entered the annual Bridge Bust event last year with a school team and she laughed as she called it “an epic fail,” but that did not stop her from coming back.

This year, Zoe and her dad entered in the family division. She did research, attended the 4-H Bridge Building workshop and took another approach to her bridge.

“We sat down and decided efficiency was most important,” she said.
