22 years given for apartment burglary Previous criminal history spurs increased sentence charge DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin recently announced that a Melrose Park man was sentenced to 22 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for stealing a universal remote control from a Wheaton apartment complex common area. On November 9, 2016, after approximately 25 minutes of deliberations, a jury found Eric Bramwell, 35, guilty of burglary following a two-day long trial. The trial was held in front of Judge Robert Miller, who handed down the sentence. Because of sen-

tencing guidelines in relation to the defendant’s past criminal history, Bramwell was eligible for Class X sentencing, or up to thirty years behind bars.

On August 1, 2015, Bramwell entered the common area of the Wheaton apartment complex located at 121 Cross Street. Once inside, Bramwell stole the remote control to the television set in the common area and then fled the scene. While at the complex however, Bramwell dropped a glove which was later recovered by Wheaton police officers. Authorities were led to Bramwell when a DNA match was made from DNA collected from the glove to the State’s convicted felon DNA database. He was taken into custody October 2, 2015 and remained in custody at the DuPage County Jail

since then. At sentencing, prosecutors offered evidence that beginning in 2014, through his arrest, Bramwell had committed similar burglaries at other apartment complexes including stealing televisions off the wall. Those complexes are located in Wheaton, Lisle, Aurora, Bloomingdale, Downers Grove and Oakbrook Terrace.

“Mr. Bramwell’s illegal activity and his history have finally caught up with him,” Berlin said. “Regardless of what was stolen, Mr. Bramwell repeatedly thumbed his nose at the law. He took what he wanted time and time again and expected to avoid the consequences. That’s not how it works, as Mr. Bramwell has now found out.”

Bramwell will be required to serve 50 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

Village to begin 2017 infrastructure work Another $5.7 million will be invested in water system related projects

Infrastructure improvements and new developments are slated for Downers Grove in 2017.

The proposed 2017 village budget shows $6.8 million is allocated for street repairs and $3.8 million is geared toward stormwater system upgrades.

Another $5.7 million will be invested in water system related projects.

Public Works Director Nan Newlon said the village looks forward to continuing its effort to make investments toward infrastructure. To add, she said many of these projects see similar budgeted amounts, compared to what’s been allotted in previous years.

Newlon said money-wise, the biggest changes in 2017 go to-

ward roadway improvement.

“We are working on some of our larger arterial roads,” she said.

Street maintenance projects to go out for bid later this year include portions Finley Road north of Butterfield and another along Dunham Road between 55th an 63rd Streets. The village is expected to see 8 miles of road repair in 2017.

“We did a comprehensive look at our street system to ensure they’re in good condition,” she said. “Maintenance will result in a cycle of repair every 20 years.”

Newlon added that Downers Grove received grant money to help in this pursuit.

Newlon said some of the most significant expenses budgeted toward infrastructure includes water main replacements, water source tanks and back-up wells.

The most recent study of water mains guides village staff to determine what actions to take.

“If we don’t (examine them), what results is water main breaks,” Newlon said.

Newlon said it is also good village practice to look at its backup water supplies.

Downers Grove’s main water source is Lake Michigan.

“We retain the wells we have,” she said. “At the time, it was seen as plan in case there was any concern for the water supply. We continue to maintain these wells.

Right now, we’re doing a study to determine what work needs to be

done to them” Village staff will continue to examine its stormwater system.

In 2013, Downers Grove saw a large flood occur. Following that, village staff had two flood studies conducted.

Each year, stormwater system replacements are budgeted at $500,000. In 2017 $400,000 go toward improvements near Saint Joseph’s Creek and another $2.5 million is earmarked for future drainage and floodplain improvement.

Other budgeted items this year include a replacement traffic signal at Lacey Road and Woodcreek Drive, parking deck maintenance in downtown Downers Grove and sidewalk improvements.

Residents can also expect to see a number of new business developments in the village.

Michael Cassa, president and CEO of Downers Grove Economic Development Corporation, said there are many reasons why it is important to see a rise in

new development, including job creation, aesthetic and tax generation. To add, he said the main reason new development is significant is being able to understand how it keeps the village’s unemployment at the lowest rate, compared to other towns in DuPage County.

“Businesses are moving here, so that means jobs are hiring,” Cassa said.

There’s a new Chipotle coming to the southeast corner of Ogden and Saratoga Avenues.

The 2,100-square-foot restaurant will be located within walking distance of Downers Grove North High School.

On Ogden Avenue and Lacey Road, people will find a car dealership, Packey Webb Ford. That new development will occupy about seven acres when they open in the fall.

Sketchers recently opened an 8,000-square-foot factory outlet store location on Butterfield Road.

Students earn 1st place in stock market game Stock Market Game (SMG) is an online education program used in thousands of classrooms nationwide Downers Grove North High students earned first place in the Northwest Suburban Fall 2016 session of The Stock Market Game program after competing against 860 other high school teams. Students Owen Wahlgren, Eric Marcanio, Jacob Ridderhoff and Tyler Mertes, supported by their AP Macroeconomics Teacher Tom Saam, created and managed their virtual portfolio from September to December 2016.

“This program is a wonderful and fun way to teach students about the economy and how the stock market works,” says North High Teacher Tom Saam. “They learn how to make informed decisions by evaluating stocks, bonds and mutual funds, which provides lifelong lessons in financial literacy.”

Saam is a social studies teacher who teaches personal economics and AP Macroeconomics at the

school. Some of the team’s holdings included Apple, Advanced Micro Devices, Carrizo Oil & Gas, iRobot, Nvidia, and Tesla.

“There is a definite science to investing, and these students proved their success, even though it was virtual,” says North High Principal Janice Schwarze. “We’re proud of them for achieving the title of first place for North High!”

The Stock Market Game (SMG) is an online education program used in thousands of classrooms nationwide. It helps teach core subjects like math, social studies, technology, business, economics and language skills in a real-world setting while emphasizing the importance of long-term saving and investing. Reimagining special needs for better opportunities

Today we can point to examples of the progress that bring people together

Many self-advocates in our special needs community, myself included, are redefining what it means to have special needs. This week, as we begin a new year, let us reflect on what it means to have special needs and what redefinition of special needs can mean to the mainstream community. Together, as we look at the state of special needs, we can redefine new opportunities, and enhance current ones, helping to bring full inclusion to our community. Eliminating division and decreasing challenges within our community will mean the ability for us to dream and to support each other’s dreams.

Twenty-eight years ago was a different time filled with much frustration for those of us with special needs. In my early years, I had lots of developmental therapies that helped me develop and, to some degree, avoid frustration in my communication. I, like others my age, didn’t have access to as many resources as are available today to help us with communication. One therapy that I had included taught me a small amount of American Sign Language (ASL). According to my mom, there seemed to be only a few professionals that were using ASL at the time with hearing children. They were signing only minimally and not encouraging the families to embrace ASL fully.

In my early years, “we didn’t realize that, had we as parents used sign language with you, even though you could hear, we could have helped you avoid much frustration and helped you develop faster,” said my mom Linda.

If only 28 years ago there had been an innovation such as Signing Time, then my family could have learned ASL alongside me and thus helped me avoid so much frustration with communication. Signing Time, a video series promoting ASL to eliminate communication barriers, was created 15-years ago

by Emmy-nominated host Rachel Coleman.

Today, after a quarter-century since my early years, times are slowly making some progress. As many parents receive a diagnosis of a disability when their

baby is born, doctors tend to present this as tragic. It is, of course, a very scary time for families. Many times, families within our special needs community spend months or more in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), or the “Baby ER” as Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edward Humes says in his book of the same name.

Often in the special needs community we end up divided among all the various types of disability diagnoses: from the deaf community to the Down syndrome community and everything in between.

This division within our community can originate from a lack of understanding.

This misunderstanding of those of us with special needs can then lead to a lack of acceptance and exclusion within society. In my early years I dealt with tons of frustration in communicating my wants and needs and personality.

Today we can point to examples of the progress that bring people together.

Through the work done by nonprofits like my own Special Chronicles, nationally like Signing Time and Miss Amazing, and, internationally like Special Olympics, positive change in the disability community is redefining what it means to be diagnosed with special needs. Today, we are seeing those of us with special needs in the workplace; at your local grocery store, coffee shop, and even as a newspaper columnist. Through movements like Special Olympics and Special Chronicles, we create a culture of understanding that leads to acceptance and inclusion for people of all abilities.

As future families have children with special needs, “it is going to be different,” said Diane Compton, mother to a daughter with Down syndrome. “Maybe hard times, but it doesn’t have to be a tragedy.”

An innovation that has made a tremendous impact and eliminated communication barriers for Diane’s daughter, Erin, was Signing Time.

“What I love about our Signing Time events, they’re unlike anything any-

where else,” said Coleman. “Because even as families who have children with special needs, we divide ourselves up like ‘oh I’m going to the deaf stuff or we’re going to the Down syndrome Buddy Walk’ but we still divide ourselves up.”

This year, we must redefine opportunities for people with special needs.

One can do so in innovative and creative ways. In redefining opportunities we create a culture where diversity is not just appreciated, it’s celebrated. Amy Wright, in Wilmington, N.C., started Bitty & Beau’s Coffee, a coffee shop that employs over 40 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

This unique coffee shop is “pouring it forward” as their advertising says and is evident by the over 10-million views video produced by Southern Living magazine and posted on Facebook.

Special Chronicles, a nonprofit, new media network that I created to give respect and voice to people with special needs, has redefined what it means to have special needs. In creating a media platform that reaches over 38,000 viewers in over 85 countries, I am redefining opportunities not just for myself but many others across our nation as contributors and on-air personalities.

“Full inclusion means the ability to dream and to support each other’s dreams and to dream big,” said Compton about Special Chronicles.

Although we had come a long way before the Americans with Disabilities Act when those with special needs were hidden away and institutionalized, our work must continue. This is especially true in light of news of possible attitudes of President-Elect Trump. We must create more understanding and education about what it means to be diagnosed with disabilities which will lead to more employment of those of us with disabilities.

Join me and let’s redefine what it means to have special needs. Together, we can create full inclusion by supporting the ability to dream big.

Campaign nets DUI, seatbelt citations 38 drivers and passengers received citations for not wearing seat belts As part of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign, the Woodridge Police Department was out this holiday season working to save lives by keeping drunk

drivers off our roads.

From Dec. 16, 2016, through Jan. 1, 2017, the Woodridge Police arrested 1 driver who had blood alcohol concentrations (BACs)

over the legal limit of 0.08. In addition, 38 drivers and passengers received citations for not wearing seat belts.

“To help Illinois drive zero fatalities to reality, we warned partygoers to never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs or face the consequences if they did

— and we kept our word,” Deputy Chief Keith Grabarek said. “These offenders now realize their actions have serious and potentially fatal consequences, and we hope they will never put themselves or others at risk by driving impaired by alcohol or drugs again.

“Too often, drivers get wrapped

up in the excitement of the holidays and make the foolish decision to drive after drinking,” Grabarek said. “But no one should ever drive impaired by alcohol or drugs. Always hand the keys to a sober driver or face the consequences. Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”

After a slow start Lisle gets rolling and defeates Streaton in a conference showdown

With a week layoff from a game and winter break wrapping up, it was hard to know what to expect for Lisle in its conference match up with Streator.

It showed up in the first quarter when both teams struggled to score, but the Lions (12-7, 4-3) exploded in the second quarter for 28 points en route to a 64-50 win Thursday in Lisle.

“We’re still on break,” Lisle coach Nick Balaban said. “You always worry about that first game coming out of break. We had a sluggish start in the first quarter, but once we made some shots, we were able to get into our press and things of that nature. We needed to create tempo tonight. The game is a lot easier when you make shots.”

Lisle trailed 15-10 after the first quarter but let 38-19 at the half.

Senior Nicole Cyranoski and junior Natalie Takahashi led the scoring run, with 17 and 11 points,

respectively, in the first half.

For the game, Cyranoski tallied 23 points and Takahashi had 20.

“Being a point guard, it is always nice to have a consistent shooting guard who you can trust and will take good shots,” Takahashi said of Cyranoski. “She has good games all the time and tonight was one of those nights. I just tried to get her the ball as much as I could.”

“Tonight was a little out of the ordinary,” Cyranoski said. “I appreciate my teammates trust me to shoot the ball and look for me on open shots.”

McKenzie Weaver added 11 points and TyAnn LegrandMelton scored 10 for Lisle.

“We have five people who can shoot the ball,” Balaban said. “If we just have two or three people going, we’re in great shape. But, there’s nights where we have no one going. That is why we always preach defense and rebounding because if we struggle, we can

Dazzlers win gold in first three events The Downers Grove Dazzlers Open Juvenile Blue Synchronized skating team continues to score gold this year in its first three competitions netting a first place in at the Kalamazoo Kickoff Nov. 20 in Kalamazoo Michigan, They also won the Dr. Richard Porter Classic in Ann Arbor Michigan Dec 3 and the Foot of the Lake competition in Fond Du Lac Wisconsin Jan. 7.

Their next competition is Jan.14 at Synchro Illinois to be held at the Oak Lawn Ice Arena.

The season ends in Grand Forks North Dakota at the 2017 Midwestern & Pacific Coast Synchronized Skating Championships to be held Jan. 24-29 at The Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks North Dakota.

Hornets upend Mustangs in showdown

It appeared as if Downers South, in general, and senior sharpshooting guard Denis Alibegovic, in particular, found their offensive groove at the end of the first quarter of the Mustangs’ showdown with Hinsdale South last Friday.

Down 13-7, the Mustangs tied it up 19-19 at quarter’s end thanks to Alibegovic firing in three consecutive three-pointers towards the end of the quarter—the last one just before the buzzer.

Alibegovic had 11 points in the quarter (13 in the first half), but Hornets went on a 7-0 run shortly

after the start of the second period, led 40-31 at halftime, and limited Alibegovic to four points the rest of the way en route to an 81-71 triumph in a battle of previously undefeated West Suburban Gold squads.

“He’s such as good shooter and such a dynamic player that at times those threes feel like 33(points),” said Hinsdale South coach Brett Moore, whose team moved to 8-5 overall, 3-0 in the WSG. “Our guys came off at the end of the quarter and said, ‘If we can force that hard of a shot (from the outside), we’ll be in good shape.’ And we continued to do that on defense. Luckily tonight on offense, a lot of shots

were falling in and I’m really proud of the guys.”

“They did a great job defensively on him,” Downers South coach Kris Olson said. “They tagged him and it was tough for him to get the ball. Give Hinsdale South credit; they had great team defense on him.”

TJ Clifford’s three-point play midway through the third quarter enabled the Mustangs (9-5, 3-1) to climb back into the contest, 4843, but Hinsdale South outscored Downers South 12-4 over the next 2:25 to make it 60-47.

“We were going to try to get them slowed down,” Olson said.

“They’re so good in transition and then (you) try to limit what you can. He’s so good (referring to Zion Griffin); we tried to limit his catches. He’s just too talented.”

Griffin, a 6-5 junior, and senior guard Nick Perry each finished with 20 points for the Hornets.

Griffin’s basket early in the fourth quarter helped the Hornets increase their lead to 62-50, and the Mustangs fell further behind, 6651. That’s when Clifford, the Western Michigan recruit who totaled 15 points (including a two-handed dunk in the second quarter), eight assists and six rebounds, fouled out with 4:42 to go in the game.

“He (Clifford) just battles and he battled all night right until the end,” Olson said.

Yet even minus one of their top players, the Mustangs chipped away and threatened to make a game of it down the stretch. Griffin attempted a dunk that clanked off the back of the rim, and Tyree Spencer (13 points) made the Hornets pay by nailing a three-pointer to put the Mustangs within seven points, 70-63, with 2:00 to play.

Winder earns spot in elite division North Central College men’s track and field athlete Luke Winder got an early start to the 2017 indoor season on Saturday, earning a spot in the elite division in the Akron Pole Vault Convention. The nine-man field competed at the University of Akron’s Stile Athletics Fieldhouse, and Winder ended the evening with a seventh-place showing.

Winder cleared 5.20 meters (17 feet, 3/4 inch). Shawn Barber, a finalist in the event competing for Canada in the 2016 Summer Olympics, cleared 5.35 meters (17’6 1/2”) to tie for first, then won a jumpoff with a clearance of

5.45 (17’10 1/2”) to successfully defend his championship.

Winder has won NCAA Division III indoor and outdoor national championships in the pole vault each of the past two seasons and has established North Central all-time records indoors (5.52m/18’1 1/4”) and outdoors (5.51m/18’1”) as well.

MEN’S BASKETBALL In a game decided in the final minute, costly turnovers down the stretch would doom the North Central College men’s basketball team, as they were outlasted 76-73 by the tenth-ranked

North Park University Vikings in a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) matchup on Saturday night, at Gregory Arena.

The Cardinals (8-6, 2-3 CCIW) were led by junior Alex Sorenson, posting a double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds on 10-16 shooting from the field. He was backed up by junior Erwin Henry, who finished with 17 points and four rebounds, while sophomore Aiden Chang chipped in 12 points and five assists, while shooting a perfect 6/6 from the free throw line.

Sorenson set the tone early for North Central, opening the game

with a mid-range jump shot and following it up with a three-point play with 17:24 on the clock. He would then sink a three-pointer from the top of the key with 13:53 remaining to give the Cardinals a 14:11, but unfortunately the Cardinals’ lead did not last much longer. The Vikings took a 1918 lead in the tenth minute and while challenged by North Central, never looked back.

Coming out of halftime, the Vikings extended their lead to 14 points, ten minutes into the second half following a steal by senior guard Juwan Henry then a layup from fellow senior T.J.

Cobbs. Thanks to accurate free throw shooting from Chang and Henry along with some key defensive stops, North Central were able tie the game 73-73 on a Sorenson layup with 1:03 remaining.

North Park senior forward would sink two free throws, while Cobbs would make one from two to give the Cardinals the opportunity for a game-levelling threepointer in the final seconds. Sadly for the Cardinals, time expired before they could get a shot off as North Park showed why they are one of the most feared teams in the country,

things that we do—sharing the basketball, play hard defensively and rebound,” Olson said.

Olson told his team after the game that “it was a tough one for us and I was trying to pick them up a little bit and let them know that there’s still a lot of season left. This is our first conference loss. It’s one conference loss so just trying to pick them up as best as I could.”

Dylan Kaczmarek contributed 15 points for the Mustangs, who have a rare Wednesday night game this week, hosting Morton in another WSG matchup at 6 p.m.

“Morton is a very, very good perimeter team and they can take it to the basket,” Olson said. “I like our toughness; I like our defensive toughness especially. I obviously like our skill-set. When we’re playing the right way, we’re an awfully

minute left.

“We ran out of gas a little bit (towards the end),” said Olson. “Give them credit. They just totally outplayed us and did a great job.”

The Mustangs and Hornets both competed in the Jack Tosh Holiday Tournament over the break, with Downers South finishing in fourth place and the Hornets going 2-2.

“Coming into this game, and as a plan for the second half (of the season), we talked about our offensive improvement is going to prove how good we are,” Moore said. “We’re ahead of schedule on defense, and tonight we did a great job on offense.”

“Playing in such a great tournament at York, I think we just need to regroup and get back to the

Perhaps the most impressive thing about the first half performance is the Lions scored the 28 points with the same five players as they did not sub in the half.

That has been the case for much of the season with a short bench and an injury.

“Having such a small team has its pros and cons,” Takahashi said.

“One of the nice things is that we are used to playing together all the time. We know how it all works, so we are pretty consistent when we

are playing together. We get used to being out there all the time and you get the adrenaline pumping.”

“Big teams with 12 girls don’t intimidate us because we have a strong five who we feel we can compete with teams,” Cyransoki added.

The Lions are looking forward to seeing how their iron five can stack up with the competition down the stretch of the season.

“We’ve played some hard teams in the conference already, so that kind of set us back a little bit,” Cyranoski said. “But we have some teams coming up we are confident we can compete with, so we’re excited about that.”

“Hopefully we play the rest of the season like we did tonight,” Takahashi said. “We just have to
